Mourinho: Chelsea Can’t Be Caught

Featured Image

Mourinho does not think Chelsea will slip up and can be caught, after his side kept pace with the top four.

United won 2-0 against Watford, thanks to goals from Mata and Martial and are just one point off the top four.

Chelsea visit Burnley on Sunday and with 14 games left in the league Mourinho does mot think they can be caught.

Mourinho told Sky Sports when asked if United themselves can catch Chelsea: “Honestly I don’t think so. Why? Because Chelsea are a very good defensive team, they defend very well and defend with lots of players, very good players, and are very well organised.

“I think in this situation, a very defensive team wins the title with counter-attack goals, set pieces goals, and individual goals from talented players. So I don’t think they’re going to let it slip.

“But football is football, you never know.”

Mourinho: Martial Deserved A Chance To Play

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho has stated that star of the match and match winning goal scorer, Anthony Martial deserved to get his chance.

The French forward assisted the opener as he provided for Juan Mata, before scoring his first goal of 2017.

Mourinho recalled Mkhitaryan and Schweinsteiger after spells on the sidelines and has said Martial deserved to start .

“Martial deserves the chance,” Mourinho told BBC Sport after United extended their unbeaten run to 16 league games.

“He has worked harder than ever in the last two weeks in the way I like – silence but hard.

“In the first half the football was fabulous. The fans got behind the team just before we scored the goal because we were phenomenal.

“When I got the job they were saying at Manchester United you need to play the football in a certain way and I agree. You cannot play a counter-attacking style, but then you have to analyse the situation.

“People sometimes forget that these teams like Watford and Stoke have very good players. I looked at this team and these players were in Italy when I was in Italy for Napoli, Inter, Lazio. These are top players.”

Parker Could Fight AJ In The Future

Duco Events, who promote Joseph Parker are hoping the New Zealander defends his WBO title successfully so he can face Anthony Joshua.

Hughie Fury is the Brit Parker is defending his title against and his promoters are hoping to set up fights against Haye, Joshua and Tyson Fury.

Joshua will face Klitschko in front of 90, 000 fans at Wembley, putting him in Duco Events sights.

David Higgins, a director at Duco Events, told Sky Sports: “Joe’s stock – assuming he wins – will go through the roof in England, therefore it would make sense for Joe to probably target English opportunities next after Fury.

“For example, if Joshua won, that would be a better unification because Joe’s stocks are high. It looks like we are heading down the UK route at the moment and then once you conquer that, the United States is the next logical step.”

Higgins said: “I think Wilder will happen, but my gut feeling is it’s probably a bit further down the track, but not too far away.

“I think the belts will unify. I wouldn’t be surprised if within two years’ time there is an undisputed heavyweight champion among the crop we are talking about. One will rise to the top.”

Hoodlums Attack NYSC Member In Cross River

Some unidentified hoodlums have attacked a NYSC corps member, Miss Gbenimachor Chinezendu-Ezinne, in her residence at Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River in the early hours of Saturday.

The victim, a 2016 Batch B `Stream 1’ corps member, who is currently doing her primary assignment at the General Hospital in Obubra, was attacked at her residence, with the hoodlums giving her a cut in her right thumb.

In her reaction to the incident, the state Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Ambekemo Eniola, revealed that Chinezendu-Ezinne had reported the matter to the NYSC authority.

She told the News Agency Nigeria (NAN) in a phone interview that:

“We are aware of the matter. The corps member reported to us that she was attacked in her residence in Obubra.

“We saw the injury on her hand; we thank God that it was not too serious. We have given her a permit to go and visit her parent and get some relief.

“We call on all communities in the state to always stand with the corps members and protect them against any form of attack.

“I condemn which ever group of persons that carried out this attack on our corps member.

“Cross River is a peaceful state; we have enjoyed a warm relationship with residents of the state and government over the years.

“I wonder why some people will go headlong to attack a corps member that came from a far distance to render service to the people.’’

What Does Obasanjo Know About Buhari?

What Does Obasanjo Know About Buhari?, By Azu Ishiekwene

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo will officially be 80 in March and there are many who think he is hyperactive for his age.

He is probably one of the busiest former presidents, with a schedule that combines half a dozen foreign travels each month and countless domestic trips filled with meetings, speeches and plenty of mischief in between.

This piece was written Azu Ishiekwene. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

He has visited President Muhammadu Buhari in Aso Rock four times and I know a publisher who has threatened to carry a placard on Obasanjo’s fifth visit – that is, if he gets to hear of it.

Like him or hate him, you ignore Obasanjo at your peril. What he says is just about a good political bellwether as when he says it. Every president from General Ibrahim Babangida to former President Goodluck Jonathan carries Obasanjo’s stripe in his butt.

Buhari’s may just have been delivered.

When Obasanjo asked the Igbo to run for the presidency in 2019, I asked myself where that was coming from. It wasn’t as if he was hosting Ohaneze or the association of Igbo traders in Ogun State and needed to say something to please them. He was not even on a visit to any South-East state.

He was hosting the Ogun State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Abeokuta. Pitching for an Igbo presidency when Obasanjo, a regular visitor to Aso Rock, knew that Buhari was just approaching midterm, seemed awkward.

What does Obasanjo know?

I began to connect the dots. Just a few days earlier, Buhari had travelled abroad on “medical checkup” and annual vacation. The circumstances of his trip were rather unusual.

In a news report announcing the trip, for example, Vanguard of January 19, 2017, reported that “the President had since the week been performing the functions of his office mostly at his official residence located within the precincts of the Presidential Villa, rarely spending dutiful hours in the office.”

Governor Ben Ayade of Cross Rivers, who visited the week the president travelled didn’t know where Buhari was when he arrived at the Villa. He thought the president was in the office only to be turned back at the office gate and directed to his residence.

Was it likely that Obasanjo knew more than he was letting on when he advised visitors from CAN, led by Bishop Tunde Akin-Akinsanya, that Igbos should prepare for 2019 one week after Buhari travelled on health grounds?

Things became even more complicated after the presidency issued a statement to explain why Buhari would no longer return after ten days (not counting weekends) as had been earlier announced.

And I’m not necessarily talking about Buhari’s death rumour or Obasanjo’s claim that he had been a victim of such rumours at least 12 times.

I’m talking about the contest between the president’s right to privacy and the public’s right to know.

In an attempt to manage a delicate situation by saying as little as possible on why Buhari could not return on Sunday, the presidency committed several blunders.

What was the point in saying Buhari was held back by “a cycle” of further tests after ten days when any adult, especially above the age of 50, who has ever reported ill to a hospital knows that ticking off a cache of tests and receiving information about when the results would be available are among the first things provided after admission?

Long before the president travelled, pictures of him in the press said more than a thousand words, so why frame him as a modern day Eisenhower?

Why give the impression that the president was in Nigeria House, putting his feet up and having photo ops with special guests from Nigeria and yet he was too busy to wave at scores of ordinary Nigerians who were dying to hear his voice just outside the door?

Information Minister, Lai Mohammed, is right that Buhari is a victim of his transparency. It was precisely because of his credentials as an honest man who means well for the country that he was voted to power.

He symbolises a different approach to governance and was not shy to speak his mind occasionally. In March 2010, after late President Umaru Yar’Adua had been hidden from the public for nearly three months, for example, Buhari rebuked the Federal Executive Council for failing to initiate Yar’Adua’s impeachment on grounds of incapacitation.

Of course it’s a stretch to compare Buhari’s health status with Yar’Adua’s at this time, but the cat-and-mouse game over his health status has not done his anti-corruption posture and moral stature any good.

Even if he returns by the next flight – and we pray he does hale and hearty – his reputation has taken a major blow from the mishandling of his medical leave.

When Buhari was voted to power nearly two years ago, voters knew as damn well as the candidate did, that at 74, age had taken its toll and managing his health was going to be a concern. Yet, he won. Voters preferred him to a younger opponent who seemed incapable of doinig the job, even if he was 20 years younger.

A presidential source has said what is happening today is a long shot from what happened to Yar’Adua. We hope and pray so, not just for the sake of the president but also for the sake of the country, which we love.

One Yar’Adua era trauma is enough.

But the present auguries are a needless reminder of that best forgotten era. When we hear things like, “I speak with my brother everyday,” “the president is hale and hearty,” “I’m in touch with Buhari’s doctor,” “the president is waiting for one more test result,” and yet not a word from the man himself, that is disturbing.

And then, to complicate matters, Obasanjo on the eve of his 80th birthday and formal opening of his presidential library, makes a pitch for an Igbo president.

I don’t like the smell of this coffee.

It’s an inconceivable contradiction that a president who ran on a ticket of openness and transparency should be hidden indefinitely behind the veil of an ailment he did not bring upon himself.

And the only government work these days is how to manage an open secret – containing what most people think they know Obasanjo knows about Buhari.

What is going on?

Abuja Airport Closure: NUATE’s Workers Threaten To Withdraw Services

Featured Image

Workers under the aegis of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), have threatened to withdraw their services at Kaduna airport should the Federal Government fail to prioritise their welfare.

Abuja Airport Closure: Foreign Airlines Reject Kaduna Airport As Alternative

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja, NUATE’s General Secretary, Olayinka Abioye, revealed that the government had not said anything about the staff of workers that would be deployed.

Mr. Abioye said that NUATE members in various aviation parastatals under the Ministry of Transportation, who had been engaged in ad hoc assignments in the past, had not been fairly treated in term of welfare.

Preparation For The Closure Of Abuja Airport Begins

He added that the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), currently owed their members millions of naira in allowances.

He said: “Now, in 2016, we were being told that the Abuja airport will be closed for six weeks by March 8.

“The government, through the parastatals, have not said anything about the staff welfare, in all the discussions that have been going on.

“We have been talking about this and our position as a labour movement is that the government must come out to tell us specifically what it has in stock for the workers.

“We believe in the growth of the industry, we believe in this operation and have also aligned ourselves that truly Abuja airport is due for comprehensive rehabilitation.

“As I speak with you, in NAMA, FAAN and NCAA, there are millions of naira that are being owed these esteemed members of staff in these organisations.

“If at the end of February nothing concrete is shown to the workers that they are going to get paid before they embark on that journey, we will ask our people to withdraw their services.’’

Boko Haram Fighters Kill 7 Nigerian Soldiers In Borno Ambush

Featured Image

Boko Haram fighters have killed seven Nigerian soldiers and wounded 19 more in an ambush on a road in the northeastern state of Borno, the military said on Friday.

The attack and continued suicide bombings throughout the northeast raise doubts about how close the conflict with the Islamist group is to a conclusion, despite the military reclaiming most territory held by Boko Haram.

The ambush on the Ajiri-Dikwa road hit the troops as they were on a routine rotation on Thursday night, the military said in a statement.

“Seven soldiers paid the supreme price in the incident while 19 soldiers sustained various degrees of injuries,” said Brigadier Sani Usman, the military spokesman .

Troops were in “aggressive pursuit” of the fleeing Boko Haram fighters, he said.

Usman said “many” Boko Haram fighters had been killed, without giving a number.

Since the terrorists were flushed out of their stranglehold in Sambisa, they have stepped up guerrilla attacks, with no sign of halting.

The Boko Haram insurgency has killed more than 15,000 people since 2009 and forced some two million from their homes.

The group split last year, with one faction led by Abubakar Shekau from the Sambisa forest and the other allied to Islamic State and led by Abu Musab al-Barnawi, based in the Lake Chad region.

Wijnaldum Praises Fantastic Klopp

Featured Image

Georginio Wijnaldum has praised Jurgen Klopp for his impact at Liverpool and says he raises each players ability a notch.

The German manager replaced Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool and has made title contenders out of them.

However, a poor start to 2017 has seen the Reds crash out of two cup competitions and drop to fifth on the table.

Wijnaldum sees no reason to blame his coach, though, insisting that the players are making progress under him, as opposed to regressing as results suggest.

“That he is,” the 26-year-old told Dutch newspaper AD when asked if he feels Klopp is the best coach he has had. “He’s so passionate. He makes players and teams better. Not one or two players, but really all of them.

“The way we play, with a lot of movement, always chasing the opponent to create space, high ball circulation, you need to be in top condition. Therefore, the training sessions are harder than the games. Literally every exercise we perform as if it happens in a game.”

Kane Confident In Catching Chelsea

Featured Image

Tottenham’s Harry Kane believes it is possible to catch and overtake league leaders Chelsea.

The table topping Chelsea are nine points clear of second placed and London rivals Tottenham, after 24 matches.

Tottenham will play Liverpool on Saturday and Harry Kane believes getting maximum points is key to overtaking the Blues.

“It’s very important and we’ve got to be ready,” Kane told the Times of India.

“It’s a chance to go seven points clear of them if we win. We want to catch Chelsea and so it’s important to put pressure on them.

“I think they are [catchable]. It is nine points – it’s only three games. In the Premier League no game is easy and Chelsea know that. They are in good form but all we can do is win our games and see what happens.

“Hopefully they will drop a few points. It’s true that Chelsea have the nine-point gap right now but in the Premier League anything can happen. Liverpool dropped points against Hull and Arsenal lost against Watford recently, and who would have expected that?

“These things happen in the EPL and we have to be ready to take advantage if they do.”

Kane added: “We’re making progress every year. In the past it was, maybe Spurs can win a trophy but if they don’t and get in the top four it is OK, whereas now I feel we have got to be in the top four, otherwise it is a disappointing season, and if we don’t win a trophy I feel it is a disappointing season too.

“We have just got try and win that first one somehow, find a way to do it whether it’s the league, the FA Cup or the Europa League, and that should push us on.”
