Antonio Conte Showers Praises On John Terry And Cesc Fabregas

Featured Image

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte praised John Terry and Cesc Fabregas after Chelsea’s FA Cup win at Wolves.

Captain John Terry was recalled to the starting line-up along with Fabregas at Molineux, where the visitors secured a quarter-final place with second-half goals from Pedro and Diego Costa.

Terry was typically composed at the back, while Fabregas had an impressive game in midfield.

Blues boss Conte said: “They played very well. It is not easy when you don’t play a lot, and John and Cesc and all the players showed me they have good form and it means they are good professionals.

“It is great to have these type of players in my squad, because I can count on them.”

Conte also praised Championship side Wolves, who caused Chelsea plenty of problems, particularly in the first half.

“It was the toughest game we have played in this competition so far for sure,” the Italian said.

“In the second half we played our football, scored two goals and created chances, but Wolverhampton deserve my compliments.”

Featured Image

Cesc Fabregas has insisted that the team is the most important thing having helped his side into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup this evening.

Fabregas has struggled to hold down a regular place in Antonio Conte‘s starting XI for much of the season, but played the full 90 minutes as Chelsea beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Molineux to progress.

Fabregas admitted that he wants to play more, but stressed that the team comes first as they continue their push for a league and cup double.

“That first 15-20 minutes they were on top of us. It’s not easy to come to these places. We knew that we had to be at our best and I think it was a professional performance,” he told BT Sport.

“I want to play, obviously I want to play. But we want to win. There is a great group and a great togetherness.”

Birmingham City Manager Gianfranco Zola Fet For Talks With Club’s Owners After Heavy QPR Trashing

Featured Image

Gianfranco Zola will seek talks with Birmingham’s owners as his reign as manager hit a new low with a 4-1 home defeat to QPR. Under Zola’s control, Birmingham have collected just six points from a possible 36 in the Sky Bet Championship and are slipping deeper and deeper into trouble.

“Obviously I need to have a chat with the owners. I really care about this club and I want to help them. As long as they trust me I am willing to try and do my best for everyone at St Andrew’s.

“At the moment I am feeling very low but I take full responsibility. I am probably not giving enough and it is making me upset. I have committed myself to the club and I am doing it with a lot of passion. We do not like where we are at the present time.”

Gianfranco Zola has struggled since taking over from the sacked Gary Rowett. When he took over they were firmly in play-off contention and now they are struggling in 14th position.

The 50-year-old said: “The result was very painful and probably our worst performance. It was very frustrating and the situation is what football is all about.

“They were superior and we couldn’t cope with the physicality of the opposition. On the other hand we couldn’t produce enough quality to cause them problems.

“In the end we lost badly and I feel sorry for the players as it is hard for them at the present time.”

Monaco,Watford To Rival Crystal Palace Over €20m Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina

Featured Image

According to Turin based daily Tuttosport, Gabonese midfielder,Mario Lemina could leave Juventus in summer, with Watford and Crystal Palace both said to be interested.

The Bianconeri hierarchy have reportedly touted a fee of no less than €20 million for the 23 year-old who they paid Marseille an initial €9.5 million for in April last year. Monaco are also said to be interested.

The Turinese paper reveals that the former Marseille man is slipping down the hierarchy in Turin, with the likes of Stefano Sturaro and new signing Tomas Rincon ahead of him.

Crystal Palace, Watford, Monaco and Marseille are all after him. It appears, according to TS, that Lemina could have left in winter to go to Crystal Palace, in a three-way deal which would have seen Roma get Daniele Baselli and Juventus nab Leandro Paredes.

Apparently, Giallorossi Coach Luciano Spalletti put a stop to it.

Lemina has only made 13 Serie A starts in two seasons, and can only add twelve appearances as a sub. He’s scored two goals and made one assist. Having started the current campaign on the teamsheet, he has since found himself being sat more and more, and has also missed time due to injury.

Everton Interested In Palermo Striker Ilijia Nestorovsky

Everton are said to be lining up a move for Palermo striker Ilijia Nestorovsky, according to reports in Italy.

A full Macedonian international, Ilijia Nestorovsky, 26, joined the Rosanero last summer from Inter Zapresic and has netted nine goals from 22 starts in Serie A this season. are reporting that the Merseyside outfit have sent scouts to watch the striker on numerous occasions with a view to launching a summer transfer bid.

Ranieri: We Were Not As Good As Ten-Man Millwall

Featured Image

Millwall FC shocked premier league defending champions, Leicester City in the FA Cup and Ranieri admits the 10-man team were better.

The League One side were reduced to ten men in the second half and a last gasp goal from Shaun Cummings won it for Millwall.

The foxes were much different against Millwall, but didn’t seem to be able to score any goal, as they failed to capitalise on their fine first half display.

“I am very disappointed,” said Leicester boss Ranieri, whose side sit just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.

“We played well in the first half, so-so at the beginning of the second until it went to 10 v 11. After that, they played better than us, with more desire and heart and deserved to win.

“When we have the opportunity to go to the next round, we have to win. We have to show desire. I gave a great opportunity to my players.

“In the first half, I watched good football. We were very prepared. I was happy at the end of the first half. I said ‘keep going, try to score but keep a clean sheet’ because in the second leg [a replay] the pitch might be better at home and we can play our football but we lost at the last minute.

“We can learn. When a team from League One beats the champions we say ‘why?’ and have to react as soon as possible. We are better than Millwall, but Millwall deserved to win.”

Liverpool Preparing Bid For Mario Gotze

Featured Image

The Daily Mirror are reporting that Liverpool are lining up a summer move for Borussia Dortmund’s Mario Gotze.

Gotze returned to Dortmund last summer but has failed to hit the heights he did when Jurgen Klopp was in charge.

It is reported that Liverpool have held “initial talks about an end-of-season switch”.

Gotze can operate in any position along the front line and would be a good fit in the Reds’ 4-3-3 system with the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino alternating positions in the front three.

Klopp: Liverpool Want To Return To Europe

Featured Image

Liverpool would like very much to return to the Champions League, even though Klopp says he doesn’t miss it.

Liverpool have not been in the champions league since the 2015-16 season when they finished eighth and lost to Sevilla in the UEL final.

Liverpool are not in any cup competitions and are looking to turn all attention to the premier league.

Klopp told the Liverpool Echo on his efforts to bring European nights back to Anfield: “Things that I don’t have, I don’t miss.

“But of course I enjoyed being in that competition a lot and that’s where we want to be.

“To achieve that we need to qualify. We didn’t qualify this season. We are working to go there as soon as possible.

“We saw this week again what a strong competition the Europa League is too. Strong teams, intense games.

“We enjoyed it last season, well we did until the last match day! We had some wonderful games in that competition.

“But of course the Champions League is THE competition. We want to be part of it. To get there we have to win a few games.”

Liverpool are currently taking in a warm weather training camp in La Manga, with their early exit from the FA Cup meaning that they are not back in Premier League action until February 27.

Coyle: Blackburn Must Be Prepared To Punish United

Featured Image

Owen Coyle, Blackburn Rovers manager has charged his players to be ready to make Manchester United pay for any mistake that make.

The one time rivals will square off in the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday and Coyle wants his players to shine.

However, the former Burnley boss remains cognisant of the task that awaits his team against Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils.

“To play an elite club like Manchester United is a wonderful opportunity,” Coyle told reporters ahead of the game.

“Particularly for our young players it’s a chance to stand toe to toe with world-class players. As opposed to sitting at home watching those world-class players on TV they are going up against them.

“This game is a chance for some of those players to see how far they’ve got to go, to say ‘maybe I need to hone my craft a little, this is what I need to do’.”

He continued: “We know if we play to our best and Manchester United play to their best then, ordinarily, they will win. But if they are slightly off that’s how shocks are created. It can happen in cup games.

“We need two things to happen – for us to be at our very best and for Man United to be off their game.

“That can happen in cup games and if it does we have to be ready to maximise our opportunity.”

Yakubu Backs Romelu Lukaku To Break 31-Year Record

Featured Image

Yakubu has backed Romelu Lukaku to become the first Everton player since Gary Lineker to score 20 league goals in a season.

“He is really good, he’s young and quick,” he said. “He can keep the ball, he can score goals. He’s going to score more goals. For me, I was unlucky I didn’t score more in my second season, but with this guy, I think he can score more than 20 goals,” he said.

“I wish I could play with him. When I see him play I just remember myself when I was there, the way he kicks the balls, the way he runs, the way he shoots with his left foot. The players like him, they always give him the goal, he has confidence and even when he doesn’t score, he still tries to.”

The Nigerian enjoyed a 20-goal haul of his own during his time on Merseyside, becoming the first Everton player since Peter Beardsley in 1991/92 to reach the milestone in all competitions.

After a stunning debut year with the Blues, the 34-year-old never quite reached those heights again during his four years at the club, but still remains a popular figure with fans.

Yakubu also has a special place in his heart for his former side, and thinks the top six is not out of reach under Ronald Koeman.

“He’s a very, very good manager,” Yakubu said of the Dutchman. “He’s changed the team, there’s some young players, Lukaku is scoring goals. It’s different from David Moyes.

Sevilla Boss Jorge Sampaoli Refuses To Rule Himself Out Of Replacing Barcelona’s Manager Luis Enrique

Featured Image

Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli has refused to give anything away when questioned about continuing links between himself and the chances of being the next Barcelona boss.

“I do not have to explain anything to anyone. I have nothing to do with what is said,” he told Sevilla’s official club website.

“My mind is focused on continuing to work every day to consolidate an idea here, in the club that brought me to Europe. It is clear that this profession is about the present and the reality, and the reality now is to strive for this club. Tomorrow, you never know.”

‘This type of media speculation doesn’t help clearly evaluate all that Luis Enrique has achieved,’ he added.

‘Barcelona’s bench will be vacated whenever Luis Enrique decides what to do.

‘I’m calm about the situation because none of the rumours started with me.’

Nigerian Army Issues Stern Warning To Social Media Propagandists

Featured Image

The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a campaign of calumny on social media platforms by some individuals or group of persons.

The faceless persons have been making spurious and unfounded allegations bordering on payment of troops operations allowances, rotation in the North East and comparing troops’ pay to what obtains in neighbouring countries.

The fabricators are most probably being sponsored by the categories of people that frustrated themselves out of the Army and political self-defeatists.

They are clearly sentimental and lack knowledge of the Nigerian Army of today.

However, investigation is ongoing to determine the full identity and source of this mischief and all those found connected with it will be dealt with in accordance with the extant provisions of the military justice system.

We wish to reiterate that the Nigerian Army is a voluntary Service.

We are not running a conscript Army, all those not satisfied are at liberty to apply for voluntary retirement or discharge as the case may be.

We cannot afford to have disloyal or disgruntled elements in the system.

Anybody caught to be involved in this ignominious campaign would have himself or herself to blame.

The Nigerian Army of today cannot be compared with that of any other period. So much has been done in the areas of operations, training, general administration, logistics and general welfare of troops and their families.

The families of our fallen colleagues are being given adequate attention commensurate with the established terms and conditions of service.

Additionally, the concern on troops welfare has been extended to their families through the creation of the Barracks Investment Initiative Programme (BIIP) in which officers and soldiers families and dependents actively participate.

The Nigerian Army has an elaborate exit plan for all officers and soldiers involved in the fight against Boko Haram terrorists in the North East this year, subject to operational exigencies.

That is why all efforts must be geared towards mopping up the remnants of the desperate terrorists still bent on causing mayhem wherever they can.

Any soldier who is not satisfied with the professional drive of the Nigerian Army and that of the government can do himself a world of good by voluntarily discharging from the Nigerian Army.

Otherwise all must desist from rumour mongering and outright falsehood which are unprofessional and have no place in today’s Nigerian Army.

Fifth columnists will not succeed in their mischief as they will be fished out and dealt with.

You are please requested to disseminate this information to the public through your medium.

Thank you for your kind cooperation.

Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman Director Army Public Relations.

Former Liverpool Midfielder Momo Sissoko Joins Italian Serie B Side Ternana

Featured Image

Former Liverpool, Juventus and PSG midfielder Momo Sissoko has signed a contract with Serie B side Ternana and will join the Italian side in the summer.

He has most recently been playing for CSL team Shanghai Shenhua and Indian Super League outfit FC Pune City.

Momo Sissoko will face a relegation battle with his new club second from bottom in Italy’s second tier.

Ternana have won just two of their last 10 games and are currently three points from safety.

They sacked ex-Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City midfielder Benito Carbone as manager last month and replaced him with former Roma and Napoli player Carmine Gautieri.

Sissoko was a favourite among Liverpool supporters during a two-and-a-half year spell at the club during which he won the FA Cup in 2006.

Herrera Backs United To Win FA Cup Again

Featured Image

Ander Herrera is confident in Manchester United’s ability to hold on to the FA Cup they won last season.

United will face Blackburn on Sunday in the fifth round of the FA Cup and despite having to play four matches in 10 days, Herrera sees them defending their title.

Due to their commitments in the UEL and the final of the EFL Cup coming up, Mourinho might have to tinker with the lineup.

“It’s a massive competition,” he told MUTV. “When some teams rotate players, that doesn’t mean they don’t give importance to the FA Cup.

“It’s the oldest competition in England and I think it’s the most amazing cup in the world because of the organisation. For me, the organisation in England is fantastic. The last four play the semi-final one game and then the final at Wembley too and it’s fantastic for the fans.

“Every club wants to win the FA Cup, teams not in the top six even more as they can get in the Europa League [if they win it]. So it’s a fantastic competition to play in. We want to keep playing in it and win away against Blackburn.

“We have very good memories from last season and I’m very optimistic because we have a very good squad “

Antonio Conte: “My Job Is To Win, Not Make My Players Happy”

Featured Image

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte insists his priority at Chelsea is to win and not keep all his players happy

Big personalities such as captain John Terry and Cesc Fabregas have therefore been starved of game time, but Conte has challenged his squad players to put pressure on him to make changes.

“When he doesn’t start in the lineup, he’s not happy, but not only John, or Cesc, or Pedro, or [Eden] Hazard,” Conte said ahead of the FA Cup tie against Wolves. “I want the player to try to fight to put me under pressure, to give me the problems to solve [and find] the best solutions for the team.

“It’s important to understand that when you stay in a great team, the most important thing, the target, is to win, not to try [and] have 21 players happy and you don’t win anything.

“The owner doesn’t ask this: to make 21 players happy. I’m happy if we win, not if we lose and have 21 players happy.”

Antonio Conte believes his playing experience, which included five league titles with Juventus, has helped him to manage those who are not playing every week equally.

“I was a footballer, I know what happens in the changing room,” Conte claims. “For the players that are used to playing every game, for the players that are not playing a lot. For the players that are not playing, but this situation is normal in the changing room.

“I have the same things for every single player, not more thought for 11 players or 12 players. I try always to pay great attention for every single player.

“It’s important, this. I want to give them a great respect because I demand this. It’s the right way to have a good dressing room.”

Petrol Subsidy Is Back? Landing Cost Now ₦165/Litre

Featured Image

There are strong indications that petrol subsidy is back with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), offsetting for months, the difference between the landing costs of petrol and the pump price.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), while indulging in series of interviews with knowledgeable players in the sector, reports that the landing costs per litre of petrol is higher than the price Nigerians pay at the pump.

NNPC Records N197 Billion Loss In 2016 Operations

A source, who is a staff of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, squealed that the federal government has been quietly bearing the differential.

“The landing costs hovers around N160 to N165. The marketers buy from us and so the government bears it because it feels it will be unfair to make the consumer pay the difference.

“With the current recession, the government will not want to burden the people with a price hike,’’ the source said.

Both the NNPC and the government are also concerned by the recent smuggling of petrol across the porous Nigerian borders to Chad and Niger, where a litre of petrol goes for over N400, compared to Nigeria’s N145.

A staff of the Petroleum Products Pricing Agency (PPPRA), who also preferred anonymity, said the marketers had no moral right to divert fuel meant for the people.

“For now Forex is a big issue,’’ the source said adding that “but the NNPC sells virtually everything it imports to them. So no marketer has any right to divert fuel.”

“If indeed the product is being sold for N400 in Niger Republic like you said, the Nigerian marketer has no right to look there.

“This is because NNPC is paying the difference just because it wants every Nigerian to have easy access to the white products.

“The fluctuating foreign exchange has not helped matters, but even the marketers cannot complain because government bears the brunt of the whole thing’’, the source reiterated.

However, a source at the NNPC fears that government may find itself overburdened by the subsidy as the economy is still caught in a web of recession.

“Soon the government may not be able to pay the price difference again because it runs into billions of naira”, said the source.

Bomb Blast: Why UNIMAID Still Most Sought After University Despite Boko Haram Insurgency

Bomb Blast: Why UNIMAID Still Most Sought After University Despite Boko Haram Insurgency -Ahmed Abubakar

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) remains the most sought after among both public and private Universities in the north eastern part of the country in spite of the dreaded boko haram onslaughts that have been bedeviling the region.

This piece was written by Ahmed Abubakar. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

The institution was created in 1975 alongside six other conventional federal universities by the Yakubu Gowon led military government for the need to boost tertiary education in the country. These Universities include: University of Port Harcourt, University of Calabar, University of Ilorin, Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, Bayero University, Kano and University of Jos, which are often described the second generation universities.

Professor, 4 Others Killed As Suicide Bomber Attacks UNIMAID

University of Maiduguri is one of those Federal universities that admit high number of students across the country which is a clear reason it attracts high number of applicants. It is also among the top ten universities in Nigeria and forth in the north on the 2016 statistics of University standard released by the National Universities Commission, (NUC).

Being the first, as well as first conventional university in the north east region, has paved the way for academic excellence locally and internationally. Most if not all north easterners and Nigerians at large cherish the university by always yearning to have it their first choice of tertiary education even though there are other universities within the region such as Federal University of technology, Yola, Abubakar Tarawa Balewa university, Bauchi and many others.

The university is large with outstanding man power, structure and variety of courses of study.

It encompasses twelve faculties such as faculty of Medicine, Agriculture, Veterinary, Education, Sciences, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Law, Arts, Engineering, Pharmacy and Dental Surgery. These faculties house over seventy departments. This, is no doubt, one of the leading factors that led to the university’s recognition because the university opens door for various disciplines of study in the region unlike the none convectional universities of technology and agriculture where fields of study are limited.

The institution therefore receives applicants from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal capital territory.

One interesting story about university of Maiduguri is that it is one of the few universities that admits students based on merit, regardless of where an applicant comes from, which, according to interviews conducted with some students gives the university fame and recognition across the country and beyond. the university gives admission chances to everyone; is the only university In the north that admits large number of southernes irrespective of who one is.

The twelve faculties of the university have produced and still producing numerous professionals who have distinguished themselves in doing wonderful jobs in their fields.

It is also noticed that graduates of three departments of the university are celebrated wherever they go in the country. Such departments are: Law, Mass Communication and Medicine.

There are a quite number of prominent personalities who graduated from the institution like the former and serving Abia State Governors, Dr. Urji Uzo Kalu and Victor Ekpaezu, from political science and biochemistry departments. Also, is the serving Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello, who studied economics, while ex- minister of the federal capital territory during Jonathan’s administration, Bala Mohammad, also graduated from the university’s English department. Current Emir of Gombe, Abubakar Shehu Abubakar, is also a graduate of public administration from the institution.

Boko Haram’s Shekau Claims Attack On UNIMAID Mosque | “Why We Attacked University Of Maiduguri”

There are much more personalities who are today alumni members of university of Maiduguri. The performances Of such personalities in various human endeavours can also serve as yardstick for the University’s academic excellence.

Even though boko haram insurgency has played a vital role in chasing away students and lecturers from the institution especially from 2009-2013 and 2014, that did not bring the university to a standstill; people still apply for study.

The 2016/2017 admission session appeared to be unique because the number of applicants rose to 46,000 unlike before when insurgency was at the peak, the figure was around 3000 applicants. Gabriel Jesus will remain at Manchester City and not be joining Inter in the future, says his agent.

The Brazilian has had a wonderful start to life at the Etihad, scoring three goals and assisting two in five appearances.

Jesus was initially linked with joining Inter Milan from Palmeiras before he picked City.

But the forward’s agent, Cristiano Simoes, has dismissed the notion of moving to San Siro so soon after the start of his Premier League career.

“Moratti is a very important personality and we are flattered by his words but there is no chance to see Gabriel Jesus joining Inter in the near future,” he told .

“He’s chosen Manchester City and he’s very happy there. We’re all delighted with his performances in England.

“Gabriel Jesus is only focused on Manchester City. He’s doing a great job with Guardiola and wants to return to action as soon as possible.”

NNPC Records N197 Billion Loss In 2016 Operations

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC), has announced that it recorded N197.49 billion total loss at the end of the 2016 financial year.

According to analysis of the corporation’s financial and operations report for 2016, which was released yesterday in Abuja, the NNPC ended all but one of its monthly trading activities in deficits.

According to data generated from the report, the corporation earned N1.726 trillion but recorded an expenditure of N1.923 trillion.

The only month it made a profit in the year was May when it posted a profit of N273.74 million.

“NNPC has been operating in a challenging environment which limits its aspiration to profitability. Overall, a trading deficit of N17.01 billion was recorded for the month under review as against the reported November, 2016 trading deficit of N18.72 billion.

“This represents a decrease of N1.71bn in trading deficit as against November 2016. The marginal decrease is due to improved PPMC (Pipelines and Product Marketing Company) coastal sales following the completion of reconciliation with other marketers,” the Corporation said.

“Other factors that affected the overall NNPC’s performance include the force majeure declared by SPDC (Shell Petroleum Development Company) as a result of the vandalised 48-inch Forcados export line after the restoration on October 17, 2016, among others.”

While the December 2016 loss figure in the report was N17.01 billion, a review of the last 11 months indicated that in January, the NNPC had a N3.55 billion trading deficit, it recorded N24.23 billion in February as deficit, N18.89 billion in March, N26.51 billion in June, N24.18 billion in July, N11.22 billion in August, N17.18 billion in September, N16.85 billion in October and N18.72 billion in November. It made N273.74 million in May as profit though.
