Film Review: American Driver

Featured Image

Moses Inwang’s latest film, American Driver isn’t a film per se, but a promotional reel of material shot along the sidelines of the Golden Icons Academy Awards (GIAMA) which is held in the United States of America.

Which is not to say that American Driver isn’t funny. If you ignore the film’s problems with structure; it starts out as a competition between two characters and then veers off into solo territory with only one of them, only to introduce the second guy midway into the film and then dispatch him off again.

Jack Curry (Evan King) is a bum who ‘’retired early’’, that is to say, immediately after graduating from University. He spends his days sleeping in late and then constituting a nuisance generally, much to the consternation of his frustrated mother.  When Curry’s mama isn’t drinking, splayed on the couch and nailed to the television set, she is nagging him to go out and get a job.

Curry does eventually, at a startup organising an awards ceremony that flies in the biggest movie, music and comedy stars from Nigeria to reward them in Texas. It is obviously somebody’s hustle but don’t let anyone hear you say it out loud. Curry has a job description of noiselessly ferrying the stars from the airport to their hotel rooms and then to the venue of the GIAMAs, but nincompoop that he is, he finds a way to either get entangled in the lives of his high profile guests, or drag them into his own mediocre but adventure filled existence.

The premise is nothing original. Think a reverse 30 Days in Atlanta, with a White protagonist plus more laughs and you have an idea where American Driver is going. The first half is capably done as the screenplay (credited to Patrick Nnamani and Moses Inwang) benefits from bursts of appropriate comic timing. The lead, Evan King is no RMD in terms of acting chops but he has natural comic timing and deploys his charms and physical looks to interpreting the material.

Would that the material were stronger and perhaps Mr King would have been even better. The film begins to go off the rails when the celebrities start to appear. In a series of cameos that go nowhere fast, some big names show up in solidarity to GIAMA, Inwang and Jim Iyke, who is a co-producer on the film.

Nse Ikpe-Etim’s cameo is embarrassing, AY’s is about as AY as you can get; short on laughs but heavy on the Warri boy shtick. Nadia Buhari phones it in as per the usual and singer Emma Nyra is a blank state throughout. The less said about Big Broher Africa’s Melvin Oduah, the better.

Jim Iyke saves for himself a much more significant supporting role but he needn’t have bothered, as he drags his own film down with the kind of juvenile acting that he should have left behind years ago. To be fair to him, the writing at this point of the film leaves little to be desired but someone with Mr Iyke’s experience should be able to lift such mediocrity. He doesn’t.

To be honest at this point, the only reason one is watching is Mr King as the whole plot has pretty much run out of steam and is just driving round in circles until it tapers off at the ending that provides almost no resolution. But watch out for Anita Chris who as a staff of GIAMA and object of fantasy for King’s Curry keeps with the campy spirit of the film and blends in with the material. American Driver could have been better, but it also could have been worse.

360Review: Life is Eazi Mixtape Vol. 1 (Accra to Lagos)

Featured Image

Tosin Ajibade, the artiste better known as Mr Eazi was the toast of the past year. He scored moderately successful singles,- by himself and as a guest artiste,- and appeared on a good number of the big albums released in 2016. Life was so good he even put together a Lagos concert in the thick of the December festivities. Everybody loved Mr Eazi, even the Starboy himself,- Wizkid, not the American impersonator.

Till he tweeted.

Something about most of Nigerian pop music owing plenty of its influence to neighboring Ghana. Context is everything and what may have slid by unnoticed coming from another artiste was quickly seized on by the Twitter and Facebook outrage machine.

Mr Eazi may be born Nigerian, but he spent a good number of his music making early years in Ghana while studying for a higher education. He only blew up in Nigeria after making some inroads in Ghana. But do not tell this to Nigerians still holding on to some superiority complex feels that are not necessarily limited to Jollof Rice.

The tweet may have threatened Mr Eazi’s career but it hasn’t derailed it. The release of the Life is Eazi mixtape: Accra to Lagos is proof that Mr Eazi is still swimming along nicely, from coast to coast. He has been a devout student of the Ghanaian underground scene and his sound, refreshing as it is, is merely an update of Ghanaian smooth highlife, by way of Burna Boy.

Accra to Lagos plays like it could have been recorded in a Lagos or Ghanaian studio, for a cosmopolitan audience, and the choice of producers certainly point to that. Ditching his day one collaborator, Juls, the record features a who is who of the most contemporary names in the business. From Nigeria’s Masterkraft, Maleek Berry and Del B, to Killbeats and Adey from the Gold Coast, the record seems designed for pure hit making impact.

But Mr Eazi’s idea of a hit is not the regular upbeat, hip thrusting bang that constitute today’s top ten radio. In this regard, Mr Eazi has bent the rules a bit, luring audiences to his cause with his mid-tempo slow burners. They take their time but they crawl under the skin eventually. Life is Eazi is cut from this cloth. It won’t impress instantly with its brazenness but it may well show some staying power, should his audience show interest in sticking around longer. There is nothing to suggest they won’t.

Accra to Lagos opens with the feel good Leg Over, and the lines, My baby dey confuse me with her bum bum. If the lyrics appear familiar, it is because such sentiments were similarly employed on his bouncy 2016 hit Hollup. Mr Eazi’s method is non-hurried, lazy even, as he seduces with his low hum and attempts at hitting higher notes.

He does not always succeed, like the fast paced Feelings, in which Eazi struggles to keep up with YungJon the wicked, but someone please give him credit for effort. The bulk of the songs have to do with male female relationships; infatuation, seduction, disappointment, betrayal and Eazi just attempts fresher, hip ways to tell the same stories.

His high profile guests are mostly uneven. Blink and be sure to miss DJ Cuppy’s negligible cameo on Fight. Tekno is an epic fail on the improbable Short Skirt, the same song in which Mr Eazi stumbles on the not so bright idea to ask some poor girl to hold me down like a short skirt. Tekno may make you dumber, but to compensate, he almost always guarantees pleasurable hits. This one has no redeeming element. Olamide and Phyno are a tag team on the reductive Life is Eazi and the local rappers obviously inspired the unengaging bonus track, My Baby, an uninspired clone of the Connect-Fada Fada- Abule Sowo corridor.

Business and Tilapia (ft. Medikal) are very much in keeping with the laid back, pleasurable sweetness of Mr Eazi’s earlier work. His is obviously a brand that still needs work; maybe not in style, but especially in substance. The hats, the good looks, the Ghana must go bags inspired costumes may catch the eye but transcending the settling monotone demands hard work.

Not so easy now is it?

Dismissed Soldier In Court For Stabbing Lover To Death Over Phone Call

Featured Image

The Nigerian soldier who allegedly killed his lover over a phone call was dragged before a Barkin-Ladi High Court in Plateau today, March 31, 2017.

The soldier, Sunday Umaru, a married man, was accused of killing his lover, Charity Thomas, by stabbing her with a knife in the stomach and slaughtering her thereafter.

Umaru, who was a private in the Nigerian Army and on posting at the Special Task Force (STF), sector 7, Barkin-Ladi, at the time of the incident, on January 23, 2016, attacked the woman who had arrived from Kaduna to visit him.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the hearing, scheduled for March 30, could not hold due to the absence of Justice Samson Gang.

Mr. Umaru was first arraigned on July 14, 2016 on a one-count charge of culpable homicide.

During the arraignment, the prosecutor, W.T Awe, of the Plateau State Ministry of Justice, told the court the accused person committed the crime on January 23, 2016 in Barkin-Ladi, adding that the Nigeria Army had court-martialed the accused, dismissed him after they found him guilty, and handed him over to the police for prosecution.

He said the accused person had told the police, in a confessional statement, that the deceased visited him sometime in January 2016, after which they had a misunderstanding which led to her death.

“In the statement, the accused alleged that the deceased used a kitchen knife to stab herself after which he (accused), removed the knife and `helped’ her to complete the act by slaughtering her,” Mr. Awe stated.

Mr. Awe further quoted the accused as saying that he was in the sitting room while Ms. Thomas was in the kitchen at about 7 p.m. when the woman’s phone rang and he picked the call.

The accused, in the statement, said that a man’s voice insisted on speaking with Ms. Thomas, but that he (accused) demanded to know who he (caller) was.

He claimed that instead of answering his inquiries, the voice rained insults on him.

Mr. Umaru, according to the statement, dropped the call, went to the kitchen and asked Ms. Thomas who the caller was, but the woman refused to provide answers to his questions, instead reminding Mr. Umaru that he was a married man.

The accused further claimed that Ms. Thomas, in a fit of anger, called off the relationship and declared that she was no more interested, especially since her parents had consistently warned her against the affair.

“Umaru said that he got angry and slapped her, which angered Charity, who quickly picked a knife and stabbed herself in the stomach,” Mr. Awe told the court.

The statement further indicated that Charity falled down thereafter, with the accused removing the knife from her stomach and slaughtering her “to complete the job she started”.

Mr. Umaru thereafter took her body outside, left it there and reported for duty at 8 p.m.

The prosecutor said the accused, from his duty point, went to see his family at the Maxwell Kobe Cantonment, Rukuba Barracks, after telling his boss that his wife wanted to see him over “a very pressing issue”.

“Charity’s lifeless body was found the next day by neighbours, while military men, who came to evacuate the body, trailed the blood marks to the accused person’s house.

“Friends of the accused also recognised the girl as Umaru’s lover, who was seen with him the previous day,” Mr. Awe told the court.

He said a team of military men, mobilised to go after the accused, arrested him at his home in the barracks, while in the company of his family.

According to Mr. Awe, the accused was court-martialed by the military and dismissed, after which he was handed over to the police for prosecution.

He said during investigation, police discovered several gory pictures and videos of the deceased that the accused took in his phone, immediately after the murder.

The accused has, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

NAN reports that at his first appearance in July 2016, Mr. Umaru’s counsel, David Adudu, prayed the court to grant his client bail, citing section 36(5) of the 1999 constitution which says that an accused is presumed innocent until otherwise proven.

Mr. Adudu had added that if the bail was granted, his client would neither jump bail nor interfere with police investigation.

Justice Samson Gang admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N200, 000 and two sureties in like sum.

Mr. Gang, who ordered that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court, said they must submit two copies of their recent passport photographs, copies of their national ID cards, GCE certificates and copies of their Rights of Occupancy.

He thereafter adjourned the matter to March 30, for hearing.

NAN reports that with the judge not available to hear the case, the matter was adjourned to May 25.

2017 UTME: JAMB Candidates Lament Stressful Registration Process, Seek Extension

Featured Image

Prospective candidates for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (2017) conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), on Friday described ongoing registration process as very slow, cumbersome, expensive and stressful.

2017 UTME: JAMB Reduces Questions, Hours For Exam | 240,000 Candidates Register In 7 Days

Some of the candidates who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in separate interviews in Kaduna and Kano, called on JAMB to extend the period for the registration.

They also urged JAMB to revert to the former registration process, which according to them is more easier and friendly.

One of them, Emmanuel Augustine, said at JAMB office in Kaduna that he was yet to complete the registration one week after he began.

“You would first open a personal profile in JAMB websites using an active personal e-mail address, proceed to the bank, pay for the form, get a Personal Identification Number (PIN) and then proceed to the CBT centre, pay for registration fee and be captured.

“But I tell you, it is not as easy as it sounds, because it takes days for one to get his PIN.

“In Jaiz Bank for example, where I paid for the form, it took five days before I got my PIN and I was going there every day.

“You can imagine the expenses, and I am still struggling to get registered.

“You can see the crowd; I was here since 6 a.m., but I am not still sure if I will get registered today,” Mr. Augustine said.

Another candidate, Victor Jacob, said it took him two weeks, from the day of the commencement of the registration till March 31 to get registered.

“Event at that, I am asked to return on Monday for thump print.

“Before coming to JAMB office, I was going to Dembo International School, but the crowd is huge, I spent days without making progress.

“From there, I went to another centre in Kakuri and the story was the same.

“We are suffering, and we spend huge amount of money on transport and feeding every day for the past two weeks for a registration that is not supposed to take more than 30 minutes using the old system,” he said.

Similarly, Adamu Alhassan, said he paid for the JAMB form at Zenith Bank in Zaria, last week Monday, but could not get his PIN, as such was unable to proceed with the registration processes.

“Could you believe that I have been going back to the bank everyday only for the officials to tell me today that I have to come to JAMB office to get my PIN and I have been here since 9:30 but no one attended to me,” Mr. Alhassan said.

On her part, Rebecca Jatau, revealed that café owners have taken advantage of the cumbersome process to exploit prospective candidates.

2017 UTME: Dear Jambites, Here’s How To Create Your Profile On The JAMB Portal

According to her, some café owners are collecting from N500 and above to open e-mail and personal profile for prospective candidates.

“Although I was able to pay for JAMB form in Union Bank and got my PIN same day, I had to pay N500 in a Café to create a personal profile in the JAMB website”.

Kubai Ayuba, another prospective candidate, told NAN at Dambo International School Barnawa, one of the CBT centres, that she started the registration process a week ago.

“I managed to pay for the form on Friday last week in Jaiz Bank, but could not get my PIN until yesterday, Thursday.

“When I came back yesterday, I was told to go and pay another N700 for the registration, which I did, but as am talking to you now, I don’t know when I would be registered considering the crowd.

“We prefer the old process where Cafes are involved and one can walk into any of the registered cafés and get registered in less than an hour,” Mr. Ayuba said.

However, one of the registration officers at Dambo International School, Micah Gagara, blamed the slow pace of the registration on network failure and applicants disregard to strict guidelines.

“Beside internet network that slows down the registration process, some of the applicants would make payment in the bank without a functional e-mail, some have inconsistent names, confusing or incomplete information,” Mr. Gagara said.

When contacted, JAMB Coordinator in Kaduna State, Emmanuel Aduku, declined comment, saying he had to seek clearance from JAMB Headquarters in Abuja.

In Kano, prospective candidates are also facing similar problems, with CBT centres unable to register candidates due to persistent network failure.

One of the candidates, Sani Umar, said he had been going to Rainbow Tech CBT Centre at Rijiyar Zaki along BUK road for over four days without getting registered.

“For the past four days, I have been going to the centre but up to this time I am speaking with you I have not completed the registration,” he said.

Another female candidate, Aisha Musa, said poor network in most of the registration centres had discouraged many candidates, who kept coming without being registered.

“I know some candidates who completed the registration forms but they are yet to have their thumbprint due to poor network at the cafes,” she said.

She called on JAMB to ease the candidates’ stress by extending the period for the registration to reduce the hardships being encountered by candidates.

A NAN Correspondent who monitored the exercise in Kano metropolis reports that large number of candidates have besieged CBT centres waiting to be registered.

At M-net Internet Cafe, some of the candidates urged JAMB to extend the deadline for the registration.

“Unless the board extends the registration period, many candidates may not register which means they will not sit for the examination this year,” Usman Bello, one of the candidates said.

The Mighty Powers Of Saraki The Great

The Mighty Powers Of Saraki The Great – Jibrin Ibrahim

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

As a student of politics, I find the huge powers accumulated and constantly expressed by the Senate President Bukola Saraki intriguing. There is almost no day that passes by without Nigerians seeing the power being used in surprising ways. This week, we saw the poor senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, bagging a six-month suspension for not carrying out “due diligence” before filing a petition against the Senate president, Senator Bukola Saraki and the lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye.

This piece was written by Jibrin Ibrahim. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

It would be recalled that the Senate had, on March 21, 2017, decided to investigate the allegation that a bulletproof Range Rover SUV said to be worth N298 million, but which the lawmakers said costs $298,000, and belonging to the president of the Senate, was seized by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

Senator Ali Ndume had also called on the upper chamber of the National Assembly to investigate the certificate scandal involving distinguished Senator Dino Melaye. By so doing, he was said to be “deliberately” bringing up an issue that painted the Senate in a bad light and had to be punished. The Senate also showed its anger that Saraki could be even remotely construed to be carrying out vengeance on the Comptroller-General of the NCS, Hameed Ali, for seizing a vehicle purportedly belonging to him. The Ethics Committee recommended a 181-legislative days suspension (one year) for Ndume but the Red Chamber became magnanimous and reduced it to six months.

Legislators are elected by citizens to represent their constituents in the legislature and it is extremely strange that their powerful colleagues would, in a cavalier manner, deprive constituents of the functioning of their elected representatives by suspending them. We all recall that the same Dino Melaye and eight others had in a previous Chamber of the House of Representatives been suspended from the legislature but an Abuja Federal High Court nullified the suspension, saying it was illegal and unconstitutional. The trial judge, Justice Adamu Bello, in his judgment, said the plaintiffs were not given fair hearing, as provided for in the 1999 Constitution. Obviously, Ndume did not deserve fair hearing also and was summarily suspended at a time he had gone outside to pray.

Saraki is indeed powerful and I believe that he would agree with the late Alistair Cooke of the “Letters from America” fame who once declared that “power corrupts and absolute power is absolutely delicious.” It appears no one can stop Saraki enjoying his powers today but as we all know, people with power have an urge to over express their powers and get themselves into deep trouble. I would advice Senator Saraki to be very careful at exercising his vast powers. Also this week, in fear of Saraki, the formerly powerful Federal Executive Council (FEC) met to consider the vast powers of the legislature and has set up a committee under the vice president with all previous senators in the Executive as members to most probably reach out to, beg and placate the powerful legislative leaders.

The Senate had last Tuesday suspended the confirmation of 27 Resident Electoral Commissioners over what it described as President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to sack the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu as directed by the powers that be. The Senate has also this week summoned the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Professor Itse Sagay, whom it accused of making derogatory remarks against them.

The learned professor of law has had the temerity to describe the Senate’s refusal to confirm the re-nomination of Mr. Magu as substantive chairman of the EFCC as “childish and irresponsible”. I don’t know what they would do to him but as I write these words, and I am being very careful not to get into trouble myself. Twice already, the Senate has also turned back the Comptroller-General of Customs, Hameed Ali (an appointee of the president) for disobeying their directives that he should dress up in Customs uniform to have the privilege of talking to them.

We all stand warned of the mighty powers of Saraki the Great. We all recall that when a former EFCC boss called Larmorde attempted to arraign Saraki’s wife, he was summoned to appear before the Senate and he lost his job. I’m sure you know the rest. In previous administrations, the Secretary of the Government was a powerful position; the current one is in deep problems since he told the Senate that their constituency projects would not be executed since that is not their constitutional responsibility. He should have been more careful, especially as he was a grass-cutter and had cut grass.

Let me close this issue of vast powers by telling my former student Dino Melaye that as a loyal retiree of Ahmadu Bello University, I have heard my vice chancellor tell the world that he did get a degree and is therefore indeed distinguished. Our degrees however testify to knowledge but also to GOOD CHARACTER as stated clearly in the law establishing Ahmadu Bello University. When people shut others up so that they cannot make revelations about sleazy acts of corruption, it’s not legitimate power. It is cover up and the hands of the law are long and will eventually catch up with all crooks, no matter their temporary power.

BBC Hausa At 60

Yesterday, I attended the public lecture and celebration of sixty years of excellent public service broadcasting to the Hausaphone world by our beloved ‘bibisi’ as we say in Hausa. BBC has been a source of largely truthful, competent and quality content broadcasting over the period and as Jarman Kano, Professor Isa Hashim said during the ceremony, after listening to the station from day one to the present day, he could provide testimony to the quality of their work.

Okay lets be careful, BBC is the outpost of our imperial ruler and must have manipulated and lied to us on certain occasions. Nonetheless, the general conclusion is that their impact has been very positive. The typical Hausa person today is well informed and has balanced information after listening each day to BBC, VOA, China, Egypt, Iran and French Hausa services, and BBC set that tradition rolling.

BBC has kept up with technology and today 23 million Hausa speakers listen to the BBC daily on their computers, tablets and smart phones. Hausa citizens from Jigawa, Katsina, Kano and Bauchi have gone to jail for criticising their governors on BBC Hausa Facebook. No one would have noticed had it been on Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN). As Professor Umar Pate said during the celebrations, its fine to commend BBC Hausa, but should we not be ashamed that the only competition to BBC Hausa was FRCN Kaduna that used to transmit to the whole West African region and today cannot project beyond seventy kilometres of Kaduna city centre? For the Hausaphone world, the radio has always been a companion for information but also for democracy, said Speaker Dogara at the event. That tradition continues today said my good friend Professor Abdallah Uba Adamu, the keynote speaker. In contemporary Kano, there is a huge community of “sojojin baka” – soldiers that rely on what comes out of their mouth. May their mouths continue to lead us to the deepening of democracy.

What You Should Know About Meningitis As Nigeria Records 282 Deaths Related To The Disease

What You Should Know About Meningitis As Nigeria Records 282 Deaths Related To The Disease

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Thursday confirmed the outbreak of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM), in five states with at least 282 deaths related to the disease.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja, Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Chief Executive Officer of the centre, said that 1,966 suspected cases have been recorded while 109 have been confirmed and being treated since the outbreak of the disease in February in the country.

The CEO said that the centre had deployed a response team to the affected states to vaccinate the residents and control further spread of CSM.

Ihekweazu added that Zamfara has the highest number of confirmed cases of 44, followed by Katsina with 32, Sokoto 19, Kebbi 10 and Niger 4 confirmed cases.

He also said that there is an inter-agency response supporting the states to contain the outbreak through the primary mode of vaccination.

However, Mr. Ihekweazu explained that a new strand of meningitis called “stereotype C” has emerged in place of the previous known type “stereotype A”, which has disappeared.

He regretted that there was not yet commercially available vaccine for this new stereotype “C” meningitis.

His words: “There is a vaccine available but it is not commercially available for the stereotype involved in this specific outbreak and we have to make application to the World Health Organisation for the vaccines.

“Thankfully the vaccines have arrived and we have started vaccination campaign in Zamfara. We are in the process of starting in Sokoto and Kebbi states.

“We continue to advocate for scientists and for the global community to really try and push to develop a vaccine for meningitis `C’, on the other hand all we can do is prevention.”

Ihekweazu said that prevention and early detection was key to combating the disease, if detected early, it could be treated with antibiotics.

“Meningitis is a tough disease especially during this period and it is associated with over-crowding, understanding the living conditions in the country, people must keep their building ventilated,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to avoid sleeping in overcrowded condition and if a lot of people must sleep together in the same room, the windows and doors must be open to allow enough ventilation.

Meningitis symptoms can include fever, cold hands and feet, refusing food, vomiting. being fretful or drowsy, rapid breathing or grunting, pale or blotchy skin but there are others too.

Meanwhile, Haruna Agwai, the Primary Health Care Coordinator of Kuje Area Council, said inadequate vaccines is hindering the progress of work at the ongoing immunisation of children against meningitis and polio in the area.

Mr. Agwai told NAN in Kuje during the immunisation of children at the Primary Health Care Centre in the area that:

“Inadequate vaccines, weather condition, inadequate funding, difficult terrain, vehicles and manpower are slowing down the process of immunisation in the area.’’

He said that in spite the hindrance, “the health workers are vaccinating children on Oral Polio Vaccines (OPV) from the ages 0 to 59 months and meningitis from 1 to 29 years.’’

The coordinator said the essence of the current exercise was to immunise children against the recent outbreak of meningitis in some parts of the country.

Some common signs and symptoms of meningitis in babies and toddlers include:

  • Fever, cold hands and feet
  • Refusing food and vomiting
  • Fretful, dislike being handled
  • Drowsy, floppy, unresponsive
  • Rapid breathing or grunting
  • Pale, blotchy skin. Spots or a rash
  • Unusual cry, moaning
  • Tense, bulging fontanelle – the soft spot on top of a baby’s head
  • Stiff neck, dislike bright lights
  • Convulsions/seizures

In adults and young children these symptoms can also include:

  • Confusion and irritability
  • Severe muscle pain
  • Severe headache

Meningitis can be divided into two main types; viral and bacterial meningitis

  • Viral meningitis is reasonably common, but rarely fatal
  • Bacterial forms are comparatively rare, but extremely dangerous and can be fatal
  • The most common bacterial cause in the UK is the meningococcus. This can cause both meningitis and septicaemia (meningococcal disease)
  • Other forms of bacterial meningitis include pneumococcal, Hib, neonatal (caused by E. coli and group B streptococcus) and TB

How do I get meningitis?

  • Someone can get meningitis when the bacteria or viruses invades the body. Different bacteria and viruses can be spread in different ways.
  • Some are carried in the back of the throat and are spread by coughing, sneezing and intimate kissing (close prolonged contact)
  • The bacteria that cause meningitis are common. At anyone on time, 1 in 10 adults will be carrying them harmlessly at the back of their throat. We do not fully understand why some people develop meningitis from this, when for the majority of people do not.
  • Some viruses are passed from person to person through the faecal oral route (going to the toilet and not washing hands) or though coughing and sneezing. In most people viruses will cause a more common infection e.g. cold, sore throat or tummy upset. Again, it is not fully understood why instead of getting an everyday infection, some people go on to develop viral meningitis.

Is meningitis contagious?

  • Yes, but is not highly infectious and some types are not infectious at all e.g. viral.
  • Meningococcal meningitis (most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK) is contagious. However, most cases happen in isolation (with no other case connected). Only those people who have had prolonged close contact with someone who has developed meningitis may have a slight increase chance of developing the disease themselves. Usually this means those living and sleeping in the same house or intimate kissing partners.

Guardiola In Agreement With Mourinho On International Calendar

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho stated this week that international friendlies at this stage of the season is detrimental, and Guardiola is in agreement with his colleague’s assertion.

However, Guardiola understands the importance of friendlies, as they help in preparing the national team and he would like the opportunity if he coaches a national team.

But says the club games at this stage are very important in different competitions, but he believes international friendlies are risky at this point of the calendar.

“The federations want the players to play as much as possible ahead of the world cup and of course we want all the players to go there,” he said at a press conference on Friday. “We want them to go there and come back safe, and play less minutes as possible.

“I am a little bit agree [with Mourinho]. Now we play for many things. All the clubs are here for many minutes and the people are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, of the Europa league so, for the qualifications, and it’s too risky to play a friendly game. I agee. If we could avoid it it would be better, but the schedule is the schedule.

“It’s too many games, it’s crazy how many games there are in all the leagues, that’s why it happens. Always the national team deserves to play games but when we have 20 games in a thousand million competitions, and then after the Confederations Cup and after the games, it looks a little ridiculous. I am sorry.”

Guardiola In Agreement With Mourinho On International Calendar

EFCC Summons More Top CBN Officials Over Forex Manipulation

Featured Image

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday summoned more senior officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the wake of investigations into an alleged foreign exchange scam and other sharp practices within the apex bank.

The Punch quoted reliable sources within the anti-graft agency as saying that those in charge of the investigation are strongly of the opinion that the activities of some officials of the bank impacted negatively on the fortunes of the naira and contributed to its drastic slump in recent months.

It was gathered that EFCC detained and grilled the two directors on Wednesday, March 29, 2017.

It was also learnt on Thursday that the officials, who were released late on the same day after writing statements on oath, are currently the Director of Procurement and a Special Adviser to the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

A top official at the anti-graft agency said the bank accounts of suspected persons were being scrutinised by security agents with a view to determining the sources of money and their trails.

The source said, “We actually invited about four senior CBN officials on Wednesday but only two showed up. One of them told us that he was ill and asked us to reschedule the invitation.

“We have now sent out letters to other senior officials and they will appear before us soon. You should understand that things that involve the apex bank are always sensitive.”

Speaking also, another source said:

“We have arrested two directors of the CBN in connection with forex manipulation. Ironically, immediately we started investigating these chaps a month ago, the CBN reeled out a new forex policy which seeks to flood the market with excess dollars to strengthen the naira.

“Already, we have searched their houses and recovered some sensitive documents. We have reason to believe that they may not have acted alone. We expect to make more discoveries as investigations continue.”

The source added that a report of the probe would be sent to President Muhammadu Buhari after investigations might have been concluded.

Conte: Hazard Is Very Happy And Settled At Chelsea

Featured Image

Antonio Conte believes the rumours linking Hazard to Real Madrid is expected to unsettle him, but the forward remains happy at Stamford Bridge.

Hazard still has three years left on the contract he signed in 2015, and has been consistently linked with Real Madrid.

However, Conte insists the Belgium captain is happy at Chelsea and the speculations linking him to Real Madrid is good news.

“The only thing that I can say to Eden is just to play,” he said. “We are happy with him. He is happy with us. I don’t see problems about him.

“This is a part of our game also, for others to try to put out these rumours to create a bit of difficulty in the mind of the players.

“I think we have great experience to face these situations and also my players. It is normal, it is logical in this part of the season to start rumours about our players and I am very happy because it means we are doing a great job.”

Wenger Will Attack Against Manchester City

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger has admitted Arsenal’s poor form is a source of concern, but will still attack when they play Manchester City.

Six of Arsenal’s last nine matches have ended in losses, sending them to sixth on the league table and a humiliating 10-2 aggregate loss to Bayern, sent them packing from the champions league.

Their dip in form has seen fans asking the Frenchman to quit the club. He stated this week that a decision about his future has been made, but is yet to make it public.

He could however extend his 21-year run as manager and he believes they can only keep doing what they’ve been doing since, which is attacking.

“We have 11 games to go in the Premier League and now you cannot change completely the structure of the team,” the 67-year-old told Sky Sports .

“The same players have won games and the same players have lost games. I have tried many changes in the last five or six games and it does not always come off.

“I have to come back to the strength of the team as much as I can. That is basically our attacking potential and we also have to focus on our togetherness and our desire to prepare our future.

“No matter how you play you have to be efficient with the way you play. I don’t think it’s the way you play it’s how well you play the way you play.”

Van Ginkel On Ake’s Return To Chelsea: I Would Have Stayed With Bournemouth

Featured Image

Marco Van Ginkel says he understands the situation Nathan Ake is in and he would have chose to with Bournemouth, instead of returning to parent club, Chelsea.

Both players have walked the same path, joining Chelsea from a Netherlands club only to be loaned out.

Ake was recalled to the Chelsea squad, after a string of impressive performances with Bournemouth, but has not been a part of the first XI, starting only two FA Cup matches.

Van Ginkel is proud of his friend getting recalled to the Stamford Bridge, but in retrospect , feels it would have been better for the defender to stay with Eddie Howe’s team.

“There was a certain pride when he was called back by Chelsea,” Van Ginkel told Goal. “He returned to Chelsea and it was going well for him at Bournemouth. Perhaps I would have stayed there [at Bournemouth].

“There might have been a clause in his contract and Chelsea bought him back on those terms. Now he’s often in the stands and not on the bench. I talk to him about it on a regular basis. Yes, he’s fed up [but that’s normal]. First you play every game and then you only train. That’s not your aim.”

“I don’t consider him like my little brother, but we do know each other very well,” he continued. “I helped him out in the beginning, and the other way around. I know English, but it comes helpful when you have a guide around.

“I helped him out football wise. It was very nice there was a countryman around. Nathan was still a youth player, but he soon got into the first team. Patrick van Aanholt was also there, so we speak each other a lot.

“Some players I do talk to, and you follow each other on Instagram. You ‘like’ certain posts, or say something. That’s good, because you keep an eye on each other that way.”

Marchisio Says Iniesta Is The Barcelona Player He Admires The Most

Featured Image

Marchisio has stated the Barcelona player he has the utmost respect for admires is Andres Iniesta.

The veteran midfielder has won a number of trophies with Barcelona, winning four UCL titles and three club world cups. With his national team, he has won a world cup and two European Championships.

The 32-year-old has not received much attention for his contribution, with Messi the overshadowing most of the players in the team.

However, Claudio Marchisio has praised the midfielder for what he brings to the team.

“The Barcelona player I admire the most is Iniesta, as he has infinite talent and intelligence,” the midfielder told JTV. “He brings so much both with his ideas and passing.”

Juventus will once again meet Barcelona, but this time in the quarterfinals, having lost to them in the final of the 2015 competition.

Marchisio, though, says his side are not looking for revenge for their crushed hopes.

“Even if the Champions League does come during a delicate time in the Serie A calendar, adrenaline gives you incredible physical and mental energy. You don’t need much to prepare for a game against Barcelona,” he added.

“It won’t be a chance for revenge after the 2015 Final, as that could only have been in another Final. Our objective is to reach the final in Cardiff and challenge for the cup.”

Mkhitaryan: I Was Certain My Time To Be An Integral Part Of United Would Come

Featured Image

Henrikh Mkhitaryan did not have a really good start when he joined Manchester United, but he insists he was not worried about his form.

The former Dortmund player struggled for form and fitness since he moved to Old Trafford , and could only make one substitute appearance in two and a half months.

The playmaker, who is prepping for the match against West Brom, never lost hope of making it to the squad on a regular basis.

“Our life is worthless without difficulties,” Mkhitaryan said. “Every person must be able to handle difficulties and the same concerns me.

“But it was not difficult for me to overcome these difficulties as I knew that sooner or later I would get my chance and I would use that.

“Yes, there are cases when a person faces much tougher problems, but he or she must be ready to face them. I just waited for my chance. I worked and I worked hard, waiting for my chance, got it and used that.”
