SPAIN

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could become the world’s highest-paid player if he leaves Manchester United for China at the end of the season. The Swede has taken the Premier League by storm this season and United want him to stay on beyond the end of his current deal, which expires in June. (AS)

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos believes Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl will be world class. During a Twitter Q&A session the former Bayern Munich man lavished praise on his compatriot and further fuelled the belief held by many that the Madrid giants will make a move for the midfielder in the summer as a replacement for Kroos. (AS)

Chelsea summer target James Rodriguez now looks likely to stay at Real Madrid. The Colombian wants to extend his contract with Los Blancos in the summer and believes the departure of Spanish playmaker Isco, who wants more first-team football, could play a part. (Marca)

GERMANY

Borussia Dortmund are expected to make an offer of 60m euros for long-term Arsenal target Alexandre Lacazette in the summer. The 25-year-old French striker has publicly announced that it may be the perfect time for him to move on and he was expected to be heading to one of Europe’s elite clubs. Dortmund weren’t one of the clubs in the frame initially but with the future of Pierre Emerick Aubameyang uncertain, it appears the Bundesliga giants are now looking into the possibility of landing the Lyon star. (SportBild)

RB Leipzig have taken the Bundesliga by storm this season and sit just seven points behind Bayern Munich. If their form continues they will all but guarantee Champions League football next season. But they aren’t guaranteed a place in next season’s campaign as two clubs owned by the same company are not allowed to compete in Europe at the same time. Leipzig owner Dietrich Mateschitz also owns Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg. (SportBild)

Following on from their 6-2 defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen have parted ways with Roger Schmidt. He departs the club with them sat in 10th position in the Bundesliga and with an uphill task in the Champions League as they head to Spain trailing 4-2 to Atletico Madrid. (SportBild)

Lampard Says Pogba Has Not Delivered

Featured Image

Frank Lampard believes that Paul Pogba has not been the game changer Manchester United hoped for when they payed a world-record fee for him.

Pogba joined United for £89.3 million and even though he has been a regular fixture in Jose Mourinho’s squad, he has not been in consistent form.

The France international only has four goals and three assists in 25 league appearances and Lampard believes United should expect more from their investment.

“It was a signal of their intentions to spend £90m on a player who I wouldn’t say is the finished article,” Lampard told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “He’s got fantastic attributes – he’s strong, great feet, he’s bigger than you and quicker than you as a midfield player.

“But when you have a £90m price tag on your shoulders we analyse more and we wonder more. When you look at him at this stage of the season I’m still wondering what is his best position? What kind of player is he? What does he want to be?

“I feel like he’s falling a little bit in between everything. When you pay £90m you want to see those results and he hasn’t quite delivered.

“He’s young and he possibly will do but, as it stands, he hasn’t been the game-changer.”

Lampard added: “We do need to give him time and flip forward to next season and see if he’s improving. At £90m he has to be that dominant midfielder and I do believe that’s in him.”

Klitschko Obsessed With The AJ Fight

Featured Image

Wladimir Klitschko says his obsession with boxing is back, as he prepares to face Anthony Joshua in April.

The Ukrainian boxer will be facing the undefeated British boxer at the Wembley Stadium in front of 90, 000 fans.

Tyson Fury stripped Klitschko of his three world titles and his rematch fell through, but will face Joshua for the IBF title and the WBA belt.

Speaking to Johnny Nelson and Adam Smith on Sky Sports News HQ, he said: “I honestly asked myself ‘do I really like what I do?’ and I said ‘no Wlad, I actually love what I do’.

“This is one of the biggest challenges I’ve had in my life – coming back after an 18-month break and fighting a young champion, really talented, athletic and all of this.

“I’m the underdog in this fight and this is actually exciting for me. I haven’t been in this situation for such a long time. I feel young and challenged. I’m the official challenger. Great!

“I want to leave the ring as the champion and the winner of this fight – that’s my obsession. I’m obsessed about it.

“Then afterwards we can count things like being three-time world champion, the belts on the line, such a big stadium, such a great opponent, one of the rising stars…

“I’m turning my face to a challenge. Many people think I’m crazy – I’m going to be 41 and I’m fighting a guy much younger, so strong, scary, knocks everybody out.

“I’m showing my face to the challenge – I love it. I’m obsessed with what I’m doing.”

Klitschko was unable to see Tony Bellew’s shock win over his old foe David Haye – “It sounds like I missed a lot!” he said – and the former champion is not looking past Joshua.

“There is nothing beyond that,” he said. “It’s not my business right now. My business is just to get ready.”

Sarri Wants Napoli To Play With Balls

Featured Image

Maurizio Sarri has charged his players to play with balls when they host Real Madrid in the second leg of UCL last-16.

Madrid are in command of the tie, as they hold a 3-1 advantage from the first leg tie and are in a better position to progress on Tuesday.

Napoli, will most definitely not make it an easy fixture for the visitors at the San Paolo and Sarri wants them to play with guts.

“It may be that we’ll play with a bit of balls,” Sarri told reporters at the pre-match media conference.

“The game will be difficult due to the technical qualities that Real Madrid have, plus their great physical qualities. But we’re united, now our common goal is to do well.

“The pressure is all on Real Madrid. They are the ones who are world champions and are expected to win. However, our fans are world champions and all of Europe will see that.

“Madrid will probably qualify, they have scored for 46 consecutive games but certainly we will try to make it difficult for them.”

Mayweather Tells McGregor To Fight Him

Featured Image

Floyd Mayweather has urged Conor McGregor to make a decision on the proposed boxing fight between them and says it makes business sense.

Mayweather retired from boxing in September 2015 and says he is only interested in returning to the ring for a crossover fight with UFC lightweight champion McGregor.

The 40-year-old retired boxer is now a boxing promoter and believes McGregor doesn’t make the decisions and should decide soon, before another loss diminishes his value.

“The difference between me and him is this: He has to fight. If I was him and I was smart, before I lose again in the UFC I’d let Floyd Mayweather kick my a** for a lot of money. It makes business sense,” Mayweather told The Daily Telegraph.

“There’s a difference between being an employee and an employer.

“If someone says ‘I want to fight Floyd Mayweather’, I can simply say ‘yes, let’s make it happen’. But when you’ve got a guy like Conor McGregor he has to talk to Dana White (the UFC president). Dana has to talk to Dana’s bosses.

“Conor’s not a shot caller. When they said ‘Why is Floyd Mayweather not fighting Manny Pacquiao?’, it was because Manny Pacquiao had a boss. I don’t have a boss. We could have easily made the fight happen years ago. Everything happens for a reason.

“The first time I was going to fight Manny Pacquiao I was guaranteed $50 million but I had patience. And when I had patience that fight became a $300m fight.”

“This guy said I’m a p*y, I’m scared, I’m a chicken,” Mayweather said. “All 49 said the same thing and all the results were the same. So with that being said, if Conor McGregor really wants to fight me, we can make it happen. But is he blowing smoke up everybody’s a? We need to know.

“When I was a young fighter I could brag and boast and say I’m going to take his a** and do this and that. I’m Floyd Mayweather. But once I reached the top I didn’t have anything to say.”

He added: “If you haven’t made $10m you can’t ask for $10m. If you haven’t made 20, you can’t ask for 20.

“What you have to do is go to the Forbes and see what he’s worth. I’m going to give you what you’re worth. If he’s worth five, we’ll give him 10.

“If he’s worth 10, we’ll give him 20. We’re talking about just one fight. We’re going to choose one fight. In one fight I made more than Conor McGregor has made in his whole career.”

Wilder Could Consider A Bellew Fight

Featured Image

Lou DiBella, Deontay Wilder’s promoted has said the American is entertaining the possibility of a WBC heavyweight title defence against Tony Bellew.

Bellew called out the American boxer after beating David Haye in 11 rounds of his heavyweight debut on Saturday at The O2.

And even though Wilder has been ordered to defend his belt against Bermane Stiverne, DiBella sees a future fight with Bellew.

“We’re not adverse to considering Tony Bellew,” DiBella exclusively told Sky Sports. “We congratulate Bellew. I’m a big fan of Tony’s. It’s not something we would write off.

“We respect him and it would certainly be something we would be interested in.”

Wilder is also interested in unifying the division by taking on Joseph Parker.

“A Joseph Parker fight would be the most desirable fight for Deontay next anyway, but you have to look at other alternatives.

“A fight with Deontay and Tony would certainly be of interest. I just like Tony Bellew. He beat a guy who is a major player. Haye was a major player in the division and Tony beat him.

“Does he deserve it? As much as any other contender would. He’s had a great win against a very highly thought of David Haye.

“He’s also a guy that has got himself some attention. Being in that film doesn’t hurt him. He’s gone out there and become someone that is well known and he just had a great victory in the ring, where he showed a lot of heart.

“We’ve got nothing but respect for Tony Bellew.”

Juventus Defender Leonardo Bonucci Admits He Already Started Learning English Ahead Of EPL Transfer

Featured Image

Leonardo Bonucci has hinted that he received offers from the Premier League last year.

The Juventus man is regarded as one of the world’s finest centre-backs and he reportedly has a number of suitors across Europe.

Manchester City and Chelsea have both been linked with him and he has prompted suggestions that they may have tried to lure him to the Premier League in the past.

Speaking to Mediaset, he said: “I am active in this club, we already signed a contract until 2021. I am here, I feel important and I do not see where the problem is. I could have left last year, I received offers from various teams. I had started to study English. Catalan? Who knows, maybe…”

Bonucci, who joined Juve from Bari in 2010, added: “I play, score and fight for Juventus, who are a great club.”

Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano said in October that Bonucci had made contact over a move as he wanted to play under Pep Guardiola, but Juve refused to sell.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Tyrone Mings Charged With Violent Conduct By FA

Featured Image

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Tyrone Mings have been charged with alleged violent conduct by the Football Association following separate incidents during the Premier League game between Manchester United and Bournemouth on Saturday.

A statement from the FA said the incidents “were not seen by the match officials at the time but caught on video.”

“Furthermore, The FA has submitted a claim that the standard punishment that would otherwise apply for the misconduct committed by the Bournemouth defender is ‘clearly insufficient.’”

“Off-the-ball incidents which are not seen at the time by the match officials are referred to a panel of three former elite referees.

“Each referee panel member will review the video footage independently of one another to determine whether they consider it a sending-off offence. For retrospective action to be taken, and an FA charge to follow, the decision of the panel must be unanimous.”

Ibrahimovic and Mings have until 6 p.m. on Tuesday to reply to their respective charges.

If Zlatan Ibrahimovic accepts the charge, he will automatically face a three-match ban which will rule him out of the FA Cup quarterfinal clash against Chelsea and subsequently the Premier League games against Middlesbrough and West Brom. If he chooses to contest it then the case will be heard by a panel before the end of this week and, if found not-guilty, he would be free to play against Chelsea.

Mertesacker: Arsenal Need To Be Ready To Fight

Featured Image

Per Mertesacker has said the focus on Alexis Sanchez is distracting and believes Arsenal are not ready to fight.

The defender has admitted the mentality within the squad is unacceptable, as they have lost four of their last six games.

The Gunners are trailing Bayern Munich by 5-1 as they go into the second leg of the last-16 on Tuesday.

“I think we saw on a lot of occasions we were absolutely not ready for the fight,” Mertesacker said at the pre-match media conference.

“We haven’t competed a lot in recent games and we want to turn that around.

“We want to come back to our strengths. One thing about the Liverpool game, we had 11 players on the pitch – even without our best player on the pitch – to show we are a unit.

“It is a little bit tense but that is normal. The team is eager to change something, you can feel that in every training session and I need to make sure we train at a high level and are focused on the next opponent.

“It is going to be a tough one against Bayern. We need to take the first step to get our fans on board again.”

Wenger has insisted reports of a training ground bust-up with Sanchez are false and Mertesacker stressed the attention on the Chile international was unhelpful after he was dropped against Liverpool.

“Every day we come in, he [Wenger] has a lot of options, he has 25 options now so it is very difficult to decide who is playing,” added Mertesacker.

“Everyone wants to push to get a starting spot, it is not about one single player. All these questions about one player are very distracting. We have a game on Tuesday for the team, not just one individual player.”

Arsene Wenger Denies Any Form Of Training Ground Bust-up With Alexis Sanchez

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger has denied that Alexis Sanchez was involved in a training ground bust-up and insisted his relationship with the Arsenal forward is “normal”.

When asked about the supposed incident, Wenger said: “I am not aware, nothing happened. Nothing at all.

“I explained after the game at Liverpool that I decided to go for a more direct option in the game and that’s what happened. That was the unique reason for my decision.

“For the rest, his attitude… He is a committed player, sometimes with excessive behaviour, but you have seen that many times in history in every squad.”

Alexis Sanchez Breaks Silence After Being Benched By Arsene Wenger

Alexis Sanchez has broken his silence after reports claiming he had been involved in a training ground row with his Arsenal team-mates.

Per Mertesacker Admits There Is Tension At Arsenal

Per Mertesacker said things are “tense” at Arsenal, but that the players are all behind Arsene Wenger.

“The one thing about the Liverpool game is that there were 11 players on the pitch. We had a real chance to go for it, to push it even without our best player on the pitch,” he said. “It’s not always the manager. It’s hard for him now to select, he does it with his best knowledge and we trust him. He has got a lot of options now.

“It is not going to be about one single player and all these questions about one player is very disruptive to our team. Tomorrow we have got a game to face that is really important to our team, not to one individual player. We have shown on many occasions that we can turn it around and we are happy to play for him, yes.

“It is a little bit tense but that is normal when you have a stretch like this. But you can feel in every training session that we are eager to change something about the situation.”

My ‘Ordeal’ Inside Kirikiri Prison

Featured Image

My ‘Ordeal’ Inside Kirikiri Prison, By Yushau A. Shuaib

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

This is not a joke, but a real-life story. I still wonder how my family members, friends and well-wishers would feel about my ‘ordeal’ inside the Kirikiri Medium Security Prison in Apapa, Lagos.

In fact, this write-up commenced in the Prison. All my life I have tried to avoid any act or behaviour that would warrant me being sent to any solitary confinement, whether in a cell, under house-arrest, a guard-room, or prison, not to talk of to the most popular (or is it notorious) Kirikiri Prison in Nigeria.

This piece was written by Yushau Shuaib. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

In the past and up till now, I have deliberately tried to avoid visiting the offices of friends whose mandates involve the detention of people, even when, professionally, I engage in crisis communication, which involves relating with the security agencies.

Meanwhile, I have also realised that the only person who can be sure of not going getting detained, either in cell, through house-arrest or in prison, is one who is dead. Influential leaders have been detained and incarcerated at various times; some went into detention straight from high and powerful positions, while others moved from detention centres to privileged posts. Nelson Mandela, Shehu Shagari, Muhammadu Buhari, Olusegun Obasanjo, Obafemi Awolowo, Wole Soyinka and even Sambo Dasuki, who has been granted multiple bails, are very few of personalities who have tasted state confinement and imprisonment, whereby their movement and freedom were not only restricted but denied.

Sometimes last year, I received an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the investigation of a company involved in crisis management for the security sector. I was embarrassed by the reckless and baseless indictment of the firm by the controversial and unceremoniously disbanded AVM Jon-Ode arms probe panel. I was nevertheless treated with dignity by the anti-corruption agency, without being detained, after providing the necessary information on the issues at stake. Meanwhile, as a man, I have always prepared for the worst scenario in case of untoward eventualities.

Before I give the reason for my journey into Kirikiri Prison, I know for sure that the right of people, in relation to their physical integrity, is that they must be free from arbitrary arrest. No matter the situation, I know that potential detainees, by right, should be informed of the fact and grounds of their arrest. In fact, victims of the emerging professional whistle-blowing enterprise deserve some respect because they are innocent until proven guilty in competent courts.

I must state that I had no hesitation when the prison officials in Abuja insisted that I must be conveyed to Kirikiri Prison. I was flown to Lagos and transported by a bus to the Prison in Apapa. I must also be very sincere to state that I was neither maltreated nor harassed from Abuja to Lagos, even though we experienced some flight delay.

At the entrance to the Prison, I became scared to the marrow on reading a notice which stated that the Kirikiri Medium Security Prison was overcrowded. On that day, March 1, 2017, it accommodated 3051 prisoners instead of its official capacity of 1700. More shocking was the fact that 2627 detainees were not convicted by any court but they were awaiting trial. Some awaiting trial inmates were immorally detained for the frivolous offences of fighting, walking at odd hours and petition writings.

Rather than convey me straight to a cell, the officials at Kirikiri Prison took me to a barbing saloon where imprisoned barbers and trainees provide the services. Next to the barbing saloon were tailoring and shoemaking workshops, where inmates were trained in the production of clothes, shoes, and bags, among others. I learnt some religious bodies and Non-Governmental Organisations purchase the items for sale outside the prison yards.

At another corner of the Kirikiri Prison was a Library and a Computer Centre, where some inmates study for examinations. Some have even graduated with flying colours from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), I learnt. By convention, further education is to be provided to all prisoners, while the schooling of illiterates and young inmates are compulsory. Even though prison is not a place for recreation and relaxation, in this Prison, there is a playground, a volleyball court and table tennis facilities. Such recreational activities like sports, music and other hobbies are also by convention required to be made available in prisons.

Strangely enough, I noticed that most of the inmates were not malnourished but looked rather healthier than I had expected. I suspect that they are probably offered better nutrition, medical examinations and treatments than it is imagined or believed.

While being led towards the prison accommodation, the official said that by law, cells for individuals should not be used to accommodate more than one person, while communal cells should only house prisoners who have been properly selected to share them. He added that all facilities are expected to meet the requirements, with regard to health, heating, ventilation, floor space, sanitary facilities and lighting.

My ‘real ordeal’ inside the prison was how to convincingly inform my family members and well-wishers that I was never arrested but was actually on an official assignment and Special Tour of prison facilities in Lagos with some media executives, including editors, columnists, broadcasters and journalists. We were led and guided through the experience by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS), Francis Enobore and the officer in charge of the Kirikiri Prison, Emmanuel Oluwaniyi.

As a proof of the tour of the prison, I requested the spokesperson of NPS to take my picture while standing at the window of the Computer Centre. He obliged. After the tour, we returned to our hotel for buffet and attended a three-day workshop on prison reform organised by Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA).

After spending nights in the hotel, I returned to Abuja without spending a night in the Prison.
