Xavi: Verratti Will Be Right For Barcelona

Featured Image

Marco Verratti has been constantly linked Barcelona and former Barcelona player, Xavi believe he’ll be an ideal signing.

Verratti has spent five years at France and also signed a five-year extension back in August.

The Italy international has also been linked with a move to Italy and even though he keeps playing down talks of leaving France, it doesn’t seem to go away.

The World Cup winner told Le Parisien: “Verratti would be the ideal signing for Barcelona in my opinion.

“I think Verratti is a bit like me. He always goes in search of the ball quite deep on the pitch and then takes it forward and dictates play.

“Verratti is small just like me and he never loses the ball. His technique is incredible.

“He is a player I would love to see at Barcelona.”

Costa Denies Talk Of A Row With Conte

Featured Image

Diego Costa has dismissed reports of a January row with Antonio Conte and says he and his team mates are on the same page.

Costa now has 17 goals in the league, after scoring in the 2-1 win over West Ham, the Spain international missed the 3-0 win over Leicester City after reports of a training clash with Conte.

However, a back injury was cited for his absence and he returned in the win over Hull City and scored.

“It was nothing,” Costa said. “People here [in England] make up a lot of stuff. Things happen, but I’m showing now that there’s nothing to it.

“I’m playing and scoring goals, and that’s the important thing. Everyone knows that anything I say has bigger repercussions than what it was.

“The manager is someone who works us really hard in training. He’s got his personality just like I’ve got mine and others have theirs, but the important thing is to show your personality in a way that benefits the team.

“This is what’s happening. Everyone is on the same page and that’s the way we have to go.”

Suarez: It Is Not Easy Being Liverpool’s Captain

Featured Image

Luis Suarez says he is shy and would like to keep a low profile as he found it difficult to captain Liverpool.

Suarez wore the captain armband occasionally in the absence of Steven Gerrard when he was at Liverpool.

Barcelona has a host of long-serving players and the 30-year-old might not be made captain, a decision he is happy with.

“I like the low profile, to be a player among the others,” Suarez told France Football.

“I am there to give a helping hand to the team but taking decisions, that is not really my thing. At Liverpool, I had the chance to be captain and it was not easy for me.

“Even if people find it hard to believe, I am someone quite shy. I am not used to pushing myself forward.”

Tyson Fury Is Still Suspended

Featured Image

The British Boxing Board of Control has stated that Tyson Fury is still facing suspension and his licence is far from being reinstated.

It has also been confirmed that a loophole to get a boxing licence from the Boxing Union of Ireland has also been blocked.

Fury vacated his titles for medical reasons and he says he’ll be back from his exile come May.

“My understanding is a fact – he’s suspended, so that’s it,” BBBofC general secretary Robert Smith exclusively told Sky Sports on Tuesday.

“He’s got a number of issues to consider before we even consider lifting a suspension.

“We’ve not had any contact with Mr Fury or any of his team since he was suspended. We understand there is a hearing taking place for anti-doping, and until that matter is dealt with, the suspension will stay in place.

“[UK Anti-Doping] carry out all of our anti-doping issues. His BBBofC [licence] is suspended until his UKAD hearing, on our behalf, has taken place. I’m hoping to hear a final date shortly, within the next month or so.

“Mr Fury has a number of issues. It’s not a matter of clicking your fingers – there are medical issues to consider, for his best interest.

“We have not heard from Mr Fury – if he wants his suspension lifted, he must contact us to find out what he needs to do. He must send us documentation, for us to consider.”

Asked about the possibility of Fury seeking a licence abroad, Smith said: “It depends who he went to box with. If he went to box with a commission that we are affiliated to, they would honour our suspension.”

Boxing Union of Ireland president Mel Christle exclusively confirmed: “The protocol is that the BBBofC is, like the BUI, affiliated to the [European Boxing Union] and the World Boxing Council. We respect each other’s decisions.

“Until the suspension is dealt with, then an application would be considered with due fairness and proper deliberation. While he is suspended by a legitimate supervisory authority, we will respect that suspension.”

#BBNaija: ThinTallTony Retains HoH Title, Marvis Becomes The Toast Of Other Housemates

Featured Image

ThinTallTony’s current profile in the ongoing Big Brother Naija reality TV show has continued to rise as he retains the mandate as the head of house (HoH) after his brilliant showing in this week’s HoH contest.

This makes it the second time in a row that he will be leading the BBN house. Last week, he won the HoH task after beating other contenders in a series of contests.

His triumphant emergence as HoH came after winning in the ‘golden egg’ contest that made all the housemates search for a golden egg that was hidden among other eggs.  In what appears to be a struggle for power and immunity from possible eviction, all the housemates vigorously searched for the golden egg to no avail. But luck finally came the way of ThinTallTony who eventually found the golden egg, thereby retaining his throne as the HoH for this week.

However, there won’t be an eviction next Sunday and the issue of immunity for any housemate does not come to play. Big Brother on Monday night asked the housemates to nominate two of their favorite housemates they would want to stay on in the house. At the end of the session, there was a three-way tie between Bally, Debbie-Rise and Marvis. Biggie however insisted that there must be only one favorite housemate, and ThinTallTony, being the HoH was asked to save the situation and he chose Marvis.

With Marvis emerging the favorite housemate, Big Brother disclosed that she won a ‘power card’ that may put her at a vantage point over other housemates. Until Biggie discloses what Marvis stands to gain for being the most favoured housemate according to the popularity votes by other housemates, no one has a clue as to what may happen in the days to come.

Keep up with the show on Big Brother Naija social media fan pages with the hashtag #BBNaija on Twitter @BBNaija, Instagram @BigBrotherNaija2017 and Facebook www.facebook.com/bigbrothernaija

Big Brother Naija reality show is aired 24/7 in 45 countries from Nigeria through East, West and Southern Africa on DStv channel 198 and GOtv channel 29.

Haye To Bellew: Let’s Make History

Featured Image

David Haye is hoping to get a rematch with Tony Bellew, as he wants his rivalry with him to be one of the greats in the history of boxing.

Tony Bellew shocked the world when he stopped David Haye in the 11th round, forcing his corner to throw in the towel.

The London boxer suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in the sixth round and even though he is facing months of rehabilitation, he is already dreaming of a second and third fight with Bellew.

Bellew admits retirement is “an option” but Haye, who is targeting a return in “six-to-nine months”, said: “I’ve got a feeling after sharing a ring with him face-to-face, locking horns with him, that he’s a real fighting man.

“Not often do you find your nemesis, the guy that in 50 years time people will look back and say ‘remember the Bellew-Haye days, what crazy fights they were?’

“The way people look at Micky Ward-Arturo Gatti, at Roberto Duran-Sugar Ray Leonard, at Joe Frazier-Muhammad Ali. They had such amazing fights, and maybe Tony Bellew would like some of that.”

“What we say in the lead-up to fights is one thing,” Haye said. “But once you go to war with someone, and in that life-and-death situation you can see this guy wants it as much as you, you have a different type of respect.

“I didn’t know him that well as a person. I had my preconceived ideas, but after sharing a ring with him he’s a true warrior like I am.

“I’m in the sport to compete with other warriors. He said if he was to win he’d give me a rematch. I thought it was laughable, but he found a way to win and hopefully he’s a man of his word.

“I’ll do the same. If the rematch happens and I beat him, I’ll give him a third fight.”

Haye insists he will return to the ring regardless of what Bellew decides. He said: “I truly hope he doesn’t, but if he was to retire I’d carry on my path to become No 1 in the world. I’ll find a way to challenge for the heavyweight title.”

JAMB And Awaiting Results Candidates [Must Read]

Featured Image

That the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the other day, came up with a new law barring candidates awaiting results from taking the entrance examination into tertiary institutions is draconian, retrogressive and myopic.

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

The pigheaded regulation represents everything that is wrong with education in Nigeria and should be trashed.

The Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo should call JAMB to order. That rule is utterly destructive and should be stopped in the national interest.

JAMB To Begin Sale Of 2017 UTME Forms In March

Reports say with effect from this year (2017), candidates awaiting results would no longer be eligible to apply for Universities Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

This was disclosed in Abuja by JAMB’s spokesman, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, who stated, categorically, that candidates awaiting results would not be admitted into any institution.

Dr. Benjamin said: “In the cause of conducting admission exercise, many institutions have admitted candidates on merit only for them to discover that such candidates do not have qualified O’ Level results or the right combination for admission and had to delete and start the process all over again. With this, they would have denied other qualified candidates the opportunity for admission.”

He said no candidate will be recommended for admission without his O’ Level result being supplied and that JAMB will insist that candidates supply their result on its website for them to be considered for admission.

To start with, JAMB should be reminded that it is just one of the 17 parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Education and as such has no power or authority to make any law.

If there is need to make any law concerning JAMB entrance, the National Assembly alone is the constitutional authority that can enact it.

UTME 2017: JAMB Bans Awaiting Results Registration, Includes 4th Choice

JAMB’s mandate is simply implementation as laid down in the Act establishing it. JAMB should not arrogate undue powers to itself outside what the law stipulates.

Decree No. 2 of 1978 (amended by Decree No. 33 of 1989) empowered the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to conduct Matriculation Examination for entry into all universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in Nigeria.

There is nowhere in the law that any category of candidates were excluded from taking the entrance examination. The job of JAMB is to conduct the entrance examination for whosoever is interested and is duly registered.

JAMB has no right under the law to prevent or stop anybody from exercising their constitutional right to education. It is obvious that JAMB’s new regulation is borne out of laziness on its part. The current Board under Prof. Is-haq Oloyede appears unwilling to do a thorough job of sorting candidates, which the Board has done since it began in 1978. The Board now wants the easy way out to the detriment of thousands of candidates and the country.

If JAMB has accommodated candidates awaiting results since 38 years ago and carried out the admission exercise without hitch or complaint, why should the 2017 set be disallowed from taking the same entrance exam?

Second, JAMB is biased against candidates who may not have the requisite O’ Level papers but is silent on the thousands of candidates who have the requisite papers but don’t get admission.

It is common knowledge that possession of requisite admission requirements is no guarantee for admission. There are several other issues involved such as catchment area, choice of university, choice of course, favouritism, bribery and corruption, etc.

JAMB’s regulation would have been innovative if it had said that henceforth, every candidate with the requisite subject combination and minimum cut-off mark would automatically get admission. JAMB should work to expand opportunities for the youths and not constrict their chances.

That is why the new regulation should be voided. If awaiting result candidates are excluded from taking JAMB entrance examination that will drastically reduce the number of candidates seeking admission.

Consequently, from about 1.5 million candidates, which is the annual figure, the number will drop to about 500, 000. That way, JAMB gains by doing less work but taking the same pay while candidates, parents and the nation lose.

If every candidate who has the requisite O’ Level papers were to be given admission, the thousands of candidates who miss admission yearly wouldn’t have missed it.

On average, every year, about 1.5 million candidates sit for JAMB and only about 500,000 are offered admission. The rest, which includes those with complete O’ Level papers are left to their fate.

Since JAMB began, millions of Nigerian youths with requisite five O’ Level papers, including Math and English Language have missed tertiary education not by their fault but because of other circumstances beyond their control, which includes JAMB’s inefficiencies and failures are among. It was JAMB’s failures that led to the introduction of post-JAMB test that is now rested.

It needs to be stressed that JAMB’s entrance examination is primarily for students in the final year of senior secondary school, who wish to proceed to tertiary institutions. They are mostly the candidates who take the entrance while awaiting their WAEC results. Those are the ones JAMB wants to shut out.

Barring this category of candidates is tantamount to punishing the youths for the systemic failures they did not cause. There is no country in the world where a person is forbidden from applying to university or other institutions of higher learning. Any person can apply but it is left to the institutions to evaluate the applications and offer admission to the deserving ones.

Allowing JAMB’s rash and arrogant regulation or rule to stand will erase any little progress the country has recorded in the tertiary education sector. It is a setback for the country.

It is absolutely regrettable and disappointing that JAMB conceived such degenerate idea, which, of course, it has no authority to make and is about imposing it on the country.

Here is a country that is largely illiterate. According to UNESCO, 65 million Nigerians are illiterate and effort is being made to bridge the gap by opening the door for mass education. And here is JAMB shutting the door and working hard to frustrate the effort of government.

In view of the critical importance of education, Nigerians should join forces to stop JAMB from imposing a vicious and cruel regulation against youths aspiring for higher education.

If JAMB stops thousands of youngsters from attempting to get admission into tertiary institutions, many will take to prostitution, kidnapping, armed robbery, Yahoo-Yahoo and other sundry crimes. In today’s tech age, youngsters should be encouraged to aspire higher and not discouraged.

“I Would Be More Successful In Nigeria If Not For Feminism” – Chimamanda Adichie

Featured Image

Multiple Award-winning writer Chimamanda Adichie has spoken of her desire to see that women are treated the same way as men, adding that she would be more successful in Nigeria if she is not a feminist.

Adichie Becomes Second Nigerian To Join American Academy Of Arts And Letters After Soyinka

Speaking with The Guardian of London, the author who was recently elected into the American Academy of Arts and Letters as a foreign honorary member said she wanted people’s marriages to change for the better; and for women to walk into job interviews and be treated the same way as somebody who has a penis.

“Feminism is not that hot. I can tell you I would sell more books in Nigeria if I stopped and said I’m no longer a feminist. I would have a stronger following, I would make more money” she said.

The novelist added: “I was opened to a certain level of hostility that I hadn’t experienced before as a writer and public figure.”

This is one of the reasons she has written a new book, Dear Ijeawele, Or A Feminist Manifesto In Fifteen Suggestions, ostensibly to reclaim the word feminism from its abusers and misusers, a category within which she would include certain other progressives, and to lay down in plain, elegant English her beliefs about child-raising.

“Dear Ijeawele is, in some ways, a very basic set of appeals; to be careful with language (never say “because you are a girl”), avoid gendered toys, encourage reading, don’t treat marriage as an achievement, reject likability,” she said in the interview.

“Her job is not to make herself likable, her job is to be her full self,” she writes in reference to women, elucidating a choice which Adichie has come to elevate almost above any other.

While on the sidelines waiting for her bail to be perfected, she released screenshots allegedly of steamy chats and dirty secrets of Apostle Suleman involving his penchant for threesomes and addiction to nude photos from her.

In the video uploaded by Sahara Reporters, Otobo insisted that she had a relationship with the pastor, adding that as a result her life was in danger.

Nigeria To Lose N3.45bn Daily As Shell Shuts Down Bonga

Featured Image

Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo) on Monday announced the shutdown of Bonga field, a move that is expected to cause oil firms and the nation a huge loss of revenue estimated at N3.45bn daily.

A statement signed and issued by the Corporate Media Relations Manager of the company, Precious Okolobo, stated that the Bonga deepwater oilfield was shut down on Saturday to enable it to commence turnaround maintenance on the field and also execute statutory activities that will ensure continuous optimum operations at the field.

The turnaround maintenance involves inspections, recertification, testing and repair of equipment as well as engineering upgrades with Nigerian companies and subsea professional playing key roles.

SNEPCo added that production from the field is expected to resume at the conclusion of the exercise next month.

The Managing Director, SNEPCo, Mr. Bayo Ojulari, was quoted as saying, “The exercise will help ensure sustained production and reduced unscheduled production deferments. This is the fourth turnaround maintenance since Bonga began production.”

A major focus is the Bonga Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading vessel, which is at the heart of the Bonga operations. The Bonga FPSO has the capacity to produce 225,000 barrels of oil and 150 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.

Reuters reported that market sources had expected work on the field because there were no exports planned in March, compared with typical exports of roughly 200,000 barrels per day.

Using an oil price of $54.4 per barrel, as seen on the Central Bank of Nigeria’s website, the 200,000 bpd would amount to $10.8m or N3.32bn (at the official exchange rate of N305.25 per dollar).

With the price of natural gas put at $2.83 per 1,000 scf as of March 3, 2017, the 150 million scf capacity translates to a loss of $424,500 or N129.58m.

Man Who Sat On Tor Tiv’s Throne Sentenced To 4 Years Imprisonment Despite Banishment

The 30-year-old man who sat on Tor Tiv’s throne shortly before the new king was installed on Saturday in Gboko, Benue State has been sentenced to four years in imprisonment by a Chief Magistrate Court, despite banishment from Tiv land.

The Tiv traditional council had yesterday announced the banishment of Stephen Nyitse from Tiv land for life for desecration of the consecrated stool of the Tor Tiv.

In the same vein, Mr. Nyitse was handed the sentence on Monday by the presiding judge, Justice P.S Chaha, after he was convicted by the Chief Magistrate Court in Gboko.

The trial judge held that the convict was guilty of trespass and impersonating the new Tor Tiv, V, Orchivirigh James Ayatse.

The prosecution had earlier stated that the convict made confessional statement to the police during interrogation that he was under an evil spell to do what he did on that day.

Justice Chaha further described the action as a disgrace to the Tiv nation for which he deserved no mercy and sentenced him to serve the term as a deterrent to others.

Last Saturday, the accused person had briskly outsmarted security men and sat on the stool prepared for the coronation of the fifth Tor Tiv, James Ayatse at the JS Stadium Gboko,

Upon interrogation, Mr. Nyitse said he was prompted by God to cleanse the stool for the new king.

“I sat on the stool in order to cleanse it and make it comfortable for the incoming Tor Tiv,” he said.

The Tiv ethnic nationality is the largest ethnic group in Benue State, and they can also be found in neighbouring Taraba State.

Marcelo Romero Sacked As Manager Of Malaga, Replaced By Michel

Featured Image

Malaga have announced the appointment of Michel as the club’s new head coach, barely two hours after announcing  the departure of Marcelo Romero.

Marcelo Romero’s shortlived spell in charge of Malaga came to an end on Tuesday morning, after being sacrifised for the team’s poor start to 2017 that saw them win just one and lose seven of 10 games and slip to 15th place in La Liga.

Malaga have moved quickly to find his successor, handing the reins to former Sevilla and Olympiakos coach.

A club statement said: “Jose Miguel Gonzalez Martin, better known as Michel, will be the new Malaga CF coach through to the 2017/18 campaign. The coach will manage his first training session on Wednesday morning and will be unveiled to the media later that day at the La Rosaleda stadium.”

Michel has work to do as the club currently reside 15th in the La Liga table after winning just six of their 26 league fixtures, but they are seven points clear of relegation.

The 53-year-old, who made over 400 appearances for Real Madrid during his playing career, has coached previously Rayo Vallecano, Getafe, Sevilla, Olympiacos and Marseille.

Yaya Toure: “Sergio Aguero Is Showing He Isn’t Finished Yet”

Featured Image

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has insisted that his Manchester City teammate Sergio Aguero has proven that he is still “one of the best strikers in the world”.

Sergio Aguero  briefly lost his starting place earlier this year following the arrival of Gabriel Jesus, but the Brazilian’s foot injury saw Aguero get another chance to prove his worth.

Since the youngster fractured his metatarsal, Aguero has returned to Pep Guardiola‘s lineup and has impressed in the process, scoring five goals in all competitions.

“I think he has been in good form for some time,” Toure told reporters. “He is such an important player for us. People were talking, saying is this the end of Aguero? But now I think he is showing he is one of the best strikers in the world.

“He is one of the most difficult strikers to handle. He is short, but he is big-legged. It is difficult to keep him quiet.”

Aguero has netted 23 times in 31 appearances across all competitions this term.

Romelu Lukaku has agreed to sign a new five-year contract at Everton according to latest reports

Romelu Lukaku long-term future at Goodison Park was questioned last summer amid reports that he wanted to leave the club

The Belgian’s agent Mino Raiola recently revealed that his client intends to extend his stay at Everton, and now journalist Jim White has claimed on talkSPORT that the forward is on the verge of putting pen to paper on a new five-year deal.

Lukaku joined the Toffees permanently in the summer of 2014 for £28m after spending the previous season on loan from Chelsea, where he made just 10 Premier League appearances in three years.

He is already the Toffees’ record Premier League goalscorer, having surpassed Duncan Ferguson’s 60-goal tally with a late strike in Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Tottenham.

How I Will Defeat Corruption In Nigeria – Osinbajo

Featured Image

Acting-President, Yemi Osinbajo has said that he will defeat corruption in Nigeria with the same model he used to drive down the level of corruption in the Lagos State Judiciary to zero percent.

He said this during a talk-shop organized by the Office of the Vice-President in contribution to the national dialogue on corruption, adding that he had the system reformed during his tenure as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos.

The Acting-President recalled that corruption in the Lagos State Judiciary dropped to zero percent following the sack of 22 corrupt magistrates and three judges, and by drastic improvement in welfare.

He told a story about a time before the reforms were made when he met an honest judge who had retired after 10 years on the Bench but yet lived in someone’s boys quarters because he had no house. He said a judge’s salary of N67,000 then could not build a house so to reverse the trend, every judge was given a house for life, while their remuneration was increased “considerably”, to the extent that Lagos became a reference point.

“It was because a system was in place and impunity was not allowed. It is important that we put in place models that will work,” he said. Osinbajo noted that in the United Kingdom, candidates undergo 17 different tests before being appointed judges.

He added that the three arms of government have to collaborate to put in place working systems that are fair and compliant with the rule of law.

“We must work together – the legislature, the judiciary and the executive – to put a model that must work. We must ensure that systems that are put in place are fair and comply with the rule of law,” he said.

He further said that the anti-graft war will not be won where citizens continue to celebrate the corrupt, adding that the underlying causes of corruption, such as deprivation, also need to be addressed.

Osinbajo said a robust international collaboration was also needed to return stolen assets and to stop the hiding of loot abroad.

“One of the critical issues that we have discovered in our fight against corruption is that we need much more robust international cooperation, especially with respect to return of assets. We find that the process of returning assets, aside from the judicial process, is so difficult and so complicated that it could just take you literally years to get assets returned.

“And I think that it is important for countries of the world where stolen assets are located to really work with us in ensuring that these assets are returned speedily. I know that the United Kingdom is working with us in particular on this issue of beneficiary register. That will be extremely useful for us because we will now be able to discover who is behind some of the names of companies and other shelves that are used to hide stolen assets.’’ He explained.
