Derby Sack McClaren As Manager

Featured Image

Steve McClaren has been sacked as Derby County manager, with the club complaining about a persistent decline in results, team unity and morale.

This is McClaren’s second spell at Derby County and with the club languishing 10 points off of playoff positions.

McClaren brought Derby County out of relegation with a seven-game winning streak, but they’ve only won one game in nine matches.

A club statement said: “Derby County has parted company with manager Steve McClaren with immediate effect. McClaren, 55, returned to the club in October last year and was handed the challenge of getting the 2016/17 season back on track after a disappointing start to the campaign.

“This was a task which was achieved swiftly and decisively, resulting in the team reaching sixth place in the table towards the latter part of 2016 after finding itself towards the relegation zone only a few months previously.

“However, since the turn of the year we have experienced a significant, unexpected and persistent decline in results, team unity and morale. Our form over the last 10 games would place us above the relegation group by goal difference alone.

“The 3-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday evening, combined with Saturday’s results, means with nine games remaining the side is 10 points adrift of a place in the Championship’s top six.”

Chairman Mel Morris said in the statement: “Steve is a great coach, we have very talented players and first class facilities but the heartbeat, commitment, focus and passion has been lacking something fundamental.

“The Brighton game on Friday night was so far from what we expect to see from those wearing a Derby County shirt.

“To ensure we are on the right path, it is important to put the building blocks in place so we can develop a team we can all be proud of. Players should wear the shirt with pride and share, espouse and exude the qualities and values we believe are important to the club, its supporters and the community.

“We need a manager who shares our values and who is prepared to develop the team, staff and processes that will set us on course for a sustainable place in the Premier League. We are less concerned about timescales than we are about getting things right. Of course we would like to achieve this sooner rather than later.

“That manager will of course be given the full support and backing of myself, the board, our executive team and staff to shape and develop the team around those who truly and demonstrably want to be part of Derby County.”

Icardi Targeting Champions League Qualification With Inter

Featured Image

Mauro Icardi has said Inter Milan are back on track to challenge for Champions League qualification after winning 7-1 against Atalanta.

Icardi scored a hat trick in the first half and Banega also scored a brace in the first half to put them up 5-0 in 34 minutes.

Inter Milan are five points behind Roma, who are third and six points behind second placed Napoli.

“It was the best game of the season,” a delighted Icardi told Inter’s official website after moving to 20 Serie A goals for the campaign.

“Playing against a rival like Atalanta, who are doing so well, and to play a game like that was so beautiful.

“Our goal is to try to the last for third place, then see where we are at the end of the championship.”

Buhari Writes National Assembly, To Resume Work On Monday

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Monday write the leaderships of the two chambers of the National Assembly to formally notify the legislators of his return to the country from London, United Kingdom.

This disclosure was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, who also confirmed that the President will resume his official duties tomorrow.

Buhari Might Return To London For Medical Check-Up ‘Very Soon’ [Watch Video]

On Friday, he had tweeted that “PMB will Monday transmit letter to N’Assembly on his return to the country. That makes his return to work formal, and constitutional.”

The disclosure might have dismissed speculations and media reports that Buhari had asked Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to continue as acting president.

On January 19, the President transmitted a letter to the National Assembly informing them of his 10days vacation in London.

He also transmitted the powers of his office to his Vice, according to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Buhari however failed to return after the 10 days which elapsed on February 6. He later wrote another letter to the Parliament, extending his leave, informing them of his doctors’ advice to stay put abroad and run a series of medical tests.

On Friday, the President returned to the country after spending 51 days in the United Kingdom to attend to his health.

Kane Sustains Injury In FA Cup Match

Featured Image

Harry Kane sustained an ankle injury in the FA Cup match against Millwall and will have a scan come Monday.

The England international rolled on his right ankle after a tackle from Jake Cooper five minutes into the game.

Kane left White Hart Lane on crutches and Pochettino says the injury is similar to the one he sustained earlier in the season.

“He twisted his ankle in the same way as before, it was the same ankle he injured in the game against Sunderland,” Pochettino said. “Now we have to wait, we will assess it tomorrow.

“It’s difficult. We hope it’s not a big issue but it looks a similar situation as his previous injury. We hope it’s not a big issue. I’m sure it will be difficult to play against Southampton next weekend.

“Of course I’m sad about Harry’s injury but we have to find a solution. When you lose a player like Harry you will miss him. Harry is one of the best strikers in England but we can’t cry.”

Thoughts On President Buhari’s Medical Advice To Nigerians

Thoughts On President Buhari’s Medical Advice To Nigerians, By Pius Adesanmi

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

From what I’ve seen thus far, President Buhari’s return is being framed as a short convalescent respite in Abuja before he returns for “further checks” in London. Until I hear differently, I have to take it that this is the true state of things.

This piece was written by Pius Adesanmi. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Whatever the case may be, I say welcome to him and I wish him God’s speed in the journey to recovery and full health. I also pray for strength for his immediate family as they continue to take care of him. I was in their shoes for 22 years, from 1985 to 2007.

I know the toll it takes on one to have to take care of one’s loved ones when they are ill. The Yoruba have a proverb that those taking care of the sick are the sick. For the 22 years that my mom, sisters, and I had to take care of my father, we were sick too. The president’s immediate family needs our prayers and support.

That said, there is also a familiar narrative of human callousness and lack of respect for the dignity of the indisposed. No matter how weak and frail the human bodily frame of President Yar’Adua was, some people somewhere needed the political symbolism of his appearance in Abuja for their own selfish purposes. No matter how weak and frail the human bodily frame of Danbaba Suntai was, some desperate people needed the political capital of his return to Jalingo.

The same primitive sentiments by the same forces who lack fundamental human decency and are genetically incapable of thinking Nigeria beyond their pernicious narrow and personal interests are now at work. However, unlike President Yar’Adua and Governor Suntai who were parachuted in barely conscious, President Buhari has agency and is a player in this unfolding scenario. He is responsible for his own decisions.

The trip and prolonged stay were already so badly handled. What is the purpose of a convalescent cameo return at such unbelievable costs to the tax payer? The proper, dignifying thing to do in the circumstances is to allow a full return to health in London before returning or to return to Abuja only when the president’s health has reached a stage where treatment could continue at home.

For me, continuing the management of his health in Abuja – we pay an awful lot annually for that State House Medical Centre – would not reduce the damage done by the fact that he went on a health safari at all or the way the whole thing was managed – deceiving Nigerians initially, dishing out information parsimoniously as if it were a privilege, bullying and blackmailing Nigerians for asking questions – but it will at least not compound the situation with an expensive cameo convalescent return to Abuja.

PREMIUM TIMES has given an in-depth account of President Buhari’s statements to his cabinet and some governors in the State House upon his return. The newspaper reports that the president weighed in on education and health. I agree with the president on education, albeit with my own amplification. On health, I sincerely hope that PREMIUM TIMES has either mis-reported the president or quoted him out of context. However, until there is clarification from the Presidency, I will go with its account.

According to PREMIUM TIMES, the president stated that we must take the education of our children seriously:

“Mr. Buhari said the world was fast changing, and more efforts must be made to equip the younger generation with relevant skills to compete in the global economy.”

I agree in toto with the president here. However, in addition to educating our children to be active participants in the global knowledge economy, we have a more urgent task to overhaul the delivery of the humanities and the social sciences in Nigeria. We need an urgent reinvestment in critical thought. We need to make two semesters of philosophy compulsory in every Nigerian tertiary institution.

That way, we will start to produce citizens who are not only capable of feeling insulted in their civic essence by the way that this whole presidential health saga has been handled but who will be interpellated to ask tough and hard questions and understand such as their right and duty to Nigeria.

If we listen to President Buhari and educate our children properly, the hordes feeling privileged that the president has deigned to bless them with a convalescent return and disturbing the peace all over social media will understand that after the human sentiment of euphoria and relief (I was quite relieved seeing the president), they have an even bigger duty of asking tough questions as his employers. And they have a duty to themselves to completely ignore any bullying by Citizen Abobaku.

Beyond education, PREMIUM TIMES reports that President Buhari has other advice for Nigerians. He has health advice for them. According to PREMIUM TIMES:

“President Buhari noted that the government would continue to discourage Nigerians from self-medication, urging those with discomforts to ensure they get proper diagnosis and doctor’s prescription for drugs. He lauded the quality of treatment he got during his medical vacation.”

I don’t know what to say to this if the newspaper reported the president’s statement correctly. All I will say is that people in power and government and Citizen Abobaku who bullies his fellow citizens to support them unquestionably at all times should try from time to time to show that they have human feeling and that they are capable of empathising with the downtrodden in Nigeria.

President Buhari is not the only person who is sick. Psychologically and emotionally, our citizens are also ill because they have been so badly beaten and battered. We should be mindful of this and be compassionate, not add to their emotional and psychological stress.

A Nigerian has probably not been paid his salary in the last eight months. He cannot feed. He cannot pay his rent. He cannot pay his children’s school fees. He cannot afford the ramshackle health facilities we have in Nigeria. The doctors are on strike anyway because they are not paid.

In all of this, he has borne your own medical trip to London because you traveled at public expense. Then you return from London to advise him to “get proper diagnosis and doctor’s prescription for drugs”. And you also praised the quality of the medical treatment you got abroad?

Is this a joke? Is this blindness to irony? Is this callousness? Is this lack of empathy? How exactly is a Nigerian supposed to feel about this very strange medical advice from the president? Where exactly is a Nigerian supposed to get this diagnosis and prescription drugs from? London?

A citizen who reads that he or she is being advised to get medical care in crumbled and ramshackle clinics and hospitals by a President just returning from a publicly-funded medical safari in London is also sick because such a citizen has just been emotionally and psychologically violated.

So when we are bullying Nigerians to empathise with the president, let us also remember that the victims of our bullying are human and deserve empathy, much more empathy than the president.

“Chelsea have been by far the most consistent team in the league and they deserve to be in the position where they are now,” Smalling, who was part of the United team that won the FA Cup last season, told MUTV.

“But I think we are on a good run and we will give a much better account of ourselves than we did last time.”

Ferdinand Backs Pogba To Get Better For United

Featured Image

Rio Ferdinand has asked Manchester United to be patient with midfielder Paul Pogba, believing he can improve.

The former Juventus midfielder joined United for a world record fee, but has been criticised for some of his performances this season.

On the other hand, Ibrahimovic has been exceptional for United and Ferdinand has said Pogba shouldn’t be expected to score more goals.

“Paul is being criticised but he’s had an OK season at Old Trafford,” the former England centre-back told The Sunday Times. “We’ve seen glimpses of what he can do. It’s now about him putting it together consistently, over 90 minutes and a whole campaign. I’m certain that will come.

“Pogba is hammered for not defending and not scoring enough. United didn’t buy him to be a defender or to score 30 goals a season. They bought him on his form for Juventus, where he had a loose, almost free role in a three-man midfield. United invested in a creative player, somebody to come in, make chances and be the dictator of the team.

“I’m confident he will get there. The team around him is still coming together. I see a progression. They’re playing football their supporters want to see, but Jose Mourinho knows there’s some shuffling of the pack and investing to be done, players to get out and others to bring in. Only after the next transfer window can we say this is a Mourinho squad.”

Wenger On Bayern Loss: Referee Killed The Game

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal played well against Bayern Munich in the second leg and the referee is to blame for the heavy loss.

Arsenal were thrashed 5-1 home and away by Bayern Munich in the last-16 UCL, losing 10-2 on aggregate.

The Gunners won 5-0 against Lincoln to make it to the FA cup semifinal and Wenger addressed the heaviest loss of his career.

“I didn’t want to gamble, I knew it was important to win the game,” he told a post-match news conference.

“The team performed well against Bayern and I wanted to give them the chance to regain their confidence.

“The players didn’t let me down. I think we had an outstanding performance as long as we were 11 versus 11.”

According to Wenger, the decision of match official Anastasios Sidiropoulos to dismiss Laurent Koscielny in the 53rd minute sealed the Gunners’ fate.

“We collapsed in the second half against Bayern, but when you are down to 10 men against a quality team… it is not a football game,” he said.

“I wish you’d sit in my seat for a while and then you would realise it’s impossible to keep everyone quiet. But we try.

“The criticism wasn’t justified from our last match. I watched this game three times now and the referee killed the game.”

Ozil: My Future At Arsenal Does Not Depend On Wenger

Featured Image

Mesut Ozil has stated his contract options at Arsenal is open and it does not depend on Wenger staying at Arsenal.

Ozil has a contract that’ll expire at the end of next season and his extension has been discussed over the past recent months.

The Germany international has not been up to par in the past few months and despite that, he might be staying at the club past next season.

“Everything is open. We had talks with Arsenal. Right now I concentrate on the current season,” Ozil told Bild.

“Arsene Wenger was one of the main reasons I joined Arsenal. But I know that sometimes things go very fast in football and that you can never plan something.

“This is why it would be wrong to say that my future depends on my coach.”

“It is my aspiration that access to reproductive health care for women and girls, especially family planning, will be seen not as a blessing to be wished for, but as a human right to be fought for,” said Ms. Linus. “Fought for, not just because of equality, but because we are tired of women dying while giving birth, tired of teenage girls dropping out of school because they got pregnant too early, tired of women not having a choice to decide if, when and how many children they wish to have. I know I am tired of this. This is why I feel honoured to partner with UNFPA and to use my network to make these issues widely known.”

“For UNFPA, improving the health and status of women and girls remains a priority, and we will continue to accelerate efforts, by building strategic partnerships to scale-up successful interventions that put young people first” said Mabingue Ngom, the Regional Director of West and Central Africa. “Our ultimate aim is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled”.

The La Liga champions started talks with the player’s camp a few months ago, while AS report sporting director Robert Fernandez has been in London in recent weeks to meet people close to the player.

Alan Irvine Will Not Apply To Replace Sacked Alex Neil As Norwich City Manager

Featured Image

Norwich interim boss Alan Irvine says he doesn’t want the job on a permanent basis.

He replaced Alex Neil and was held to a 2-2 draw by Blackburn in his first game in charge.

After the game, Irvine said: “I won’t apply for the job. I told Alex right from the beginning I am not a threat to him. With my age and experience that could have been regarded as such when I first came in.

“Even before I agreed to come I wanted that made clear. I can’t tell him that and then apply for the job.”

Irvine confirmed he has been asked by the board to take charge of the squad for next weekend’s home game against Barnsley.

“I got a phone call late on Friday afternoon, just as I thought I was going to have a quiet Friday night, and I was simply asked to take the team for this game and the next one,” he said. “When you are asked by the board to do that, that is what you do so I agreed to that. Alex came back to the training ground after the board meeting. It was good to see him.

I didn’t really know him prior to the summer when he was on a course with him. I think he is extremely diligent with his work, very, very thorough and I believe he has a really bright future as a manager but the board have made their decision

Arsene Wenger Remains Coy Over Future Despite Protest From Arsenal Fans

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger says he is not ruling out extending his Arsenal reign, with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

Some fans protested against Wenger before the FA Cup win over Lincoln this afternoon.

Speaking afterwards, the Arsenal manager said: “Let’s not talk about me too much because that has happened a lot recently. I have shown in my life that I try to serve this club with complete commitment and I will do that as long as I am here.

“How long? I don’t know at the moment. I have shown a lot of loyalty and my preference is here. I focus on my job. I always do that. I let other people judge my performances.

“People talk and talk and talk, it doesn’t mean they talk truth. We have to deal with that and perform on the football pitch. We let people talk and show them what we are about.

“When I have a problem I try to just sort it out. I am competitive and always focused on solving the problems I face. Sometimes the size of the problem is bigger, but there are always problems.”

Alves: Juventus Must Have No Fear To Win UCL

Featured Image

Juventus are on the precipice of winning a sixth straight Scudetto and are also in the running for the UCL and Alves believes they must be calm to win both.

A 2-1 win over AC Milan has put Juventus 11 points clear at the top of the Series A with the season winding down.

Juventus still have to overcome Porto to enter the next stage of the UCL and Alves who beat Juventus in the final of the European competition believes they must charge on without fear to be champions.

“We are in good shape, both physically and psychologically,” he told JTV.

“Now we are going into the most important part of the season. Great players work all year to be ready for these moments… to win competitions. Together, we can have a great finale to the campaign.

“I expected it to be a strong Juve side when I arrived, because a team that wins five consecutive Scudetto titles and reaches the Champions League final has to be strong.

“I came to a club that wants to win everything and that fires me up, it makes me and my team-mates aware every day that we can write history.

“Slowly we will reach our objective: a sixth straight Scudetto and Serie A history.”

“I am aware of how important the Champions League is for the Bianconeri and the history of this club,” Dani Alves said.

“I too, like all the Juventini, want to dream and am convinced we can do it if we stay calm and show no fear of making mistakes… then we can go all the way.”

Guardiola: Manchester City Must Develop A Winning Mentality

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola is simply interested in instilling a winning mentality into the minds of his players at Manchester City.

Silva and Aguero sent City to the semifinal of the FA Cup, and Guardiola will be at Wembley for the first time as an EPL manager.

And with City still hunting down silverware on three different fronts, the former Bayern Munich coach want the club to have a winning mentality.

“To become a winning club when a club has not been in the past, just a generation – Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany, David Silva, helped the club to step forward and that’s why I just can say thank you to them that I am part of that club now,” said Guardiola.

“That is not a club with a long history of winning things. I learned at the academy in Barcelona when I was 12 that it’s not acceptable to lose.

“To understand that, you don’t distinguish between friendly and competitive games. Every game you play, you have to play well, try to win and show the opponent you are there to win.

“It’s the only way you can improve as a club with a good mentality, and that is what I am going to try in my period here to give the club. It doesn’t matter the competition, no complaints, no regrets. Go there and try to win the game.”

“I have good memories of being at Wembley, at the old and the new one,” added Guardiola. “Yes, of course, and to live that experience.

“Normally that just happens in the final, but here it is in the semi-final too and of course we are so happy to be there, so happy.”
