Belgium Collapse Angered Martinez

Featured Image

Belgium surrendered a two-goal lead against Russia to draw 3-3, leaving Roberto Martinez frustrated with his side.

Belgium came from a goal down to lead at the break, thanks to a brace of headers from Benteke, after Mirallas levelled from the spot.

Chadli was involved in both goals scored by Benteke and created chances in the second half, that Benteke and Alderweireld could not make count.

Martinez’ men were punished for missing those chances, as Russia got back into the game thanks to goals from Miranchuk and Bhukarov.

“I do not hide it, I’m very disappointed,” he said, as quoted by Het Nieuwsblad. “We came here to play a good game and we must never relinquish a 3-1 lead.

“I see several reasons why we were so bad in the last 20 minutes. The six substitutions I’ve made have not done well. Then the intensity fell off, the team dropped their concentration and the result is goals.

“Sometimes there were individual mistakes, but that can happen, after making mistakes you become stronger.

“It is also a friendly match so you must put everything into perspective. But it is no excuse.”

Zaha: I Did Not Put A Timescale On Being Selected By England

Featured Image

Wilfried Zaha has rejected claims by Gareth Southgate he gave a timescale on when he should be called up to the three lions before picking to play for Ivory Coast.

The winger represented England in two friendly matches before he decided to represent his country of birth.

A statrmstatement released by Zaha’s representative has disputed the claims made by Southgate and also stated the Ivorian already made his decision before Southgate was confirmed as manager.

“In light of recent comments and reports questioning Wilfried’s desire or passion to play for England I feel it important to set the record straight,” the statement said.

“Wilfried did not impose a timescale or set a date by which he had to be selected by England, there was no ‘disappearing egg timer’.

“The ‘private’ meeting with Mr Southgate was very amicable, however the fact remains that Wilfried made his decision to play for the Ivory Coast prior to Mr Southgate being appointed interim and subsequently permanent England manager.

“It was Wilfried’s personal choice and it was his right as a senior player to accept the opportunity to represent his nation of birth and that of his family heritage. His ‘desire’ or ‘passion’ should never have been publicly questioned for making that decision.

“Wilfried is very proud of his family and very proud to represent the Ivory Coast, most recently demonstrated by his performance against Russia.”

Let There Be Light, Except In Nigeria, By Owei Lakemfa

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

When God created the world, according to the Bible, it was dark. God said ‘Let there be light, and there was light’. The probable exception has been Nigeria, where for over fifty years, the people have been subjected to almost eternal darkness. The senior staff of the power sector complained in 1988 that the country was neither maintaining its power plants nor were there solid plans to expand ther capacities. Over these, they went on strike. The Babangida regime saw this as an affront, rounded up eleven of the workers leaders and put them on trial for treason, demanding the death penalty. They eleven were sentenced to life imprisonment.

This piece was written by Owei Lakemfa. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

The Obasanjo administration spent $15 billion purchasing darkness for the country. The Jonathan administration thought it had a brilliant idea; privatise the power sector, thereby save the country funds and simultaneously improve power generation and supply in the country. In 2012, it carried out genetic engineering on the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). It cloned from it, eleven Distribution Companies (DISCOs), six Generating Companies (GENCOs) and one Transition Company. With fanfare, it auctioned the DISCOs and GENCOs to private companies, while government retained the Transmission component to relay power from the GENCOs to the DISCOs. So, the single bureaucracy of the PHCN gave way to eighteen others, just to generate and distribute a meagre 4,500MW of electricity to 183 million people!

The sale was controversial and some of the private companies, like the one in Yola, did not pay up before the power sector was handed over to them. The foreign direct investment (FDI) the country was told would flow in from the purchases did not materialise; rather, the money was sourced locally. With privatisation, there is no known value added; new transformers were not bought and the pre-paid meters the new companies promised, have largely not materialised. The DISCOs preferred to do estimated billing of consumers, meaning that even when they have been supplying darkness, consumers have still been forced to pay. There are also complaints that the DISCOs sometimes refuse to pick power from the GENCOs in order not to pay the latter. In fact, some of the companies were accused of asset-stripping. The 10 percent shares in the privatised companies reserved for workers under the law were not given. Rather, the new employers turned permanent work into casual work and most denied the staff the constitutionally guaranteed right to unionise.

Rather than the sector improving, it has become ever more unreliable. Some communities have protested not being supplied electricity for one to two years!

While it was thought that with privatisation, public funds would no longer be expended on the sector, the Jonathan administration through the Central Bank coupled N213 billion for the private companies in the name of an Electricity Market Stabilisation Fund. If it is a loan, it is not known whether the companies are paying back or will ever pay back.

With the new administration, not a few of us called for the review of the sector’s privatisation as we were convinced that the country was short-changed and that almost all the new owners were incompetent and incapable of running the industry. As if to prove our point, power generation, which in the pre-privatisation period sometimes hit 4,500 MW, came to as low as 2,200MW before attaining its current average of 3,400MW.

To worsen our plight as a people, all that the new owners sing is; increase the tariff. In this they are backed by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), a ‘regulator’ which is actually the mouth piece of those it was established to regulate. When Nigerians protested arbitrary tariff increases and won their case in court, the NERC vowed not to obey our courts.

Four years after privatisation, officials of the Ministry of Power paint a pitiful picture of the power sector, describing it as a disaster. However, they do so, not in a critical manner but as a way of making excuses for the failure of the GENCOs and DISCOs, and making a case for an amount as huge as N702 billion to be taken out of the country’s lean purse to shore up the failed or failing private companies. In addition, they made a case for an additional N495 billion debt owed by the companies to be paid or written off by government.

On how the country can raise such huge funds, they propose a $10.2 billion ‘facility’ from the World Bank. That means, they want to further bloat our foreign debts, thereby complicating the country’s budget deficit. To push government to bailout the companies, the Ministry officials proclaim that the debt of these seventeen private companies could bring down the banking sector!

Our officials lament that while the DISCOs expected to collect an average of N71 billion monthly, they collect only N33 billion, and that as a result, they only pay one quarter of the costs owed the GENCOs. They also campaign that the GENCOs are having to pay high costs for gas and to use water and dam facilities. I wonder whether these private companies that were touted as high flying, did not do market surveys or have business plans before bidding.

The DISCOs and GENCOs, from all appearances, are bankrupt companies which need to be taken over; pouring huge sums of money into them is like pouring water into a basket, since privatisation has not resulted in improved power generation, distribution or better efficiency in the sector. Given the marked incompetence and bankruptcy of the companies, it makes no sense for us to continue using scarce public funds to bottle feed them. We need to cut our losses and build a power sector that can bring results. There is no alternative than for us to revert the power sector to public ownership; that way the overall interest of the country will be better served.

Messi Slammed With Four-Match Ban

Featured Image

Argentina’s Lionel Messi will serve a four-match ban for a foul mouthed rant at a match official and will miss the match against Bolivia.

The punishment is due to an incident that happened towards the end of Argentina’s 1-0 win over Chile, with Messi scoring the only goal from the spot.

The Barcelona attacker was penalised for a foul and replied by waving his arms and hauling insults at the referee’s assistant, Marcelo van Gasse and also refused to shake hands with him after the final whistle.

The incident was not recorded in referee Sandro Ricci’s report, but the emergence of a video showing the actions of the 29-year-old prompted FIFA to act.

Messi has been fined 10,000 Swiss francs (£8,100) and will also miss World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay, Venezuela and Peru before returning for the final match against Ecuador.

“This decision reflects the consistent case law that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has applied in previous and similar cases,” a FIFA statement reads.

Messi was dealt the suspension and a fine of 10,000 Swiss francs ($10,160) by FIFA’s disciplinary panel.

FIFA dealt a four-match ban to Lionel Messi after ruling that the Argentina forward verbally abused a match official in a World Cup qualifying game against Chile last week.

FIFA dealt a four-match ban to Lionel Messi after ruling that the Argentina forward verbally abused a match official in a World Cup qualifying game against Chile last week.

The Barcelona player was found guilty of “having directed insulting words at an assistant referee” in the World Cup qualifier against Chile last Thursday which Argentina won 1-0 thanks to a penalty he scored.

FIFA said Messi was guilty of “having directed insulting words at an assistant referee”

“This decision is in line with the FIFA Disciplinary Committee’s previous rulings in similar cases.”

Messi will miss Argentina’s next South American qualifying game against Bolivia, scheduled for later Tuesday, with the remainder of the suspension served over his country’s subsequent World Cup qualifiers.

He can return for Argentina’s final qualifier, away to Ecuador on October 10.

Messi and the Argentina federation can appeal against the ban.

FIFA had intervened when the incident was not initially reported by the Brazilian referee after Argentina’s 1-0 win at Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.

It was judged a red-card offense for Messi, who scored the only goal from a first-half penalty.

Television pictures showed Messi reacting angrily late in the game when the assistant flagged him for a foul. He waved his arms and shouted profane insults at the Brazilian official.

After the game, Messi refused to shake hands with the assistant who had annoyed him.

The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, has raised the alarm that Boko Haram elusive kingpin, Abubakar Shekau, is still alive and could be hiding in Sambisa forest – a stronghold of the sect in Borno state.

In a chat with state house correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, Dan-Ali said Shekau had been disguising with masks to evade arrest.

He, however, emphasised that the military had overpowered the sect, and expressed the belief that its leader will be arrested “as soon as possible”.

He said: “The spiritual headquarters has been ransacked and vandalised, and Shekau is on the run.”

“He may be hiding in one of the enclaves of Sambisa forest, which we are dominating. We have opened up the place we are using the place as a training area. We shall be patrolling and be ransacking that forest for the whereabouts of Shekau.

“If you have been opportune to go to Sambisa forest, you will know we have dominated the whole stronghold of the sect,  their spiritual headquarters has been destroyed, and is now occupied being by our armed forces.

“I believe it’s just a matter of time, it took America about seven to 10 years to get Bin Laden, so we will get Shekau as soon as possible.”

Responding to claims by the military that Shekau had been killed, he said:

“Let me tell you categorically, these insurgents have a way of disguising with masks. It’s possible that there are many (Shekaus), but we are looking for the real one.

“He has been using mask to give the impression that he has been killed, so that we can relax, but we will not relax until we get him.”

Nigeria Uncovers Massive Fraud In YouWin Programme

Featured Image

A massive fraud has been uncovered in the Federal Government Youth Enterprise With Innovation In Nigeria programme, YouWin, following an ongoing probe ordered by the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun.

The Punch quoted a reliable source in the ministry of finance as saying that investigators had already discovered that some senior civil servants gave out or facilitated slots worth between N7m and N10m each to their spouses, children and friends.

The source, who insisted that the probe had not been concluded by the investigators, added that their initial findings were so worrisome that the minister had decided that the entire programme should be restructured.

“The fraud uncovered in the programme made the minister to restructure the programme and turn its focus into enterprise education,” the source said.

The source continued: “Actually, allegations were persistent that there was racketeering.  Some of the applicants, especially those who lost out, claimed that some of the winners simply copied and pasted the plans of other applicants in order to win.

“Some of them also said they were asked by some civil servants to use specific consultants in order to be considered.

“Contrary to the rules of the game, awards were also given to some entrepreneurs that were operating outside Nigeria. In fact, some of these people simply took the cash and migrated to foreign countries.”

The source added: “Some of the members of the team used it to set up friends and family as awardees. In one case, a husband and his wife used the same address and pocketed N10m each. In another instance, a son of one of the directors in the ministry was given N10m.

“When the (current) administration got into power, one of the first things that the ministry did was to ask for the BVN of awardees. It was an attempt to find out if some of the awardees got more than a single slot and whether senior civil servants awarded slots to their family members.”

It is very clear now that the BVN verification, which exposed the fraud in the programme and initiated the probe, will lead to the indictment of some senior civil servants.

An original initiative of the ministry which began during the former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, YouWin was conceived to help youth entrepreneurs grow existing businesses and create employment.

The 17-Year-Old ‘Highly Skilled’ Boko Haram Suspect Who Admitted To Killing 18 People

A 17-year-old Boko Haram suspect was on Tuesday paraded by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), who admitted to killing 18 people since he joined the group three years ago.

Mustapha also said he gained skill handling assault rifles, with which he executed his victims.

He said: “I was forced to join Boko Haram about three years ago.”

“Boko Haram insurgents came to our village and forcefully took many of us away. We were kept in the bush camp near Kala Balge and from there we carried out various operations, during which I personally killed 18 persons.

“I can handle all kinds of guns including AK-47 and AA (anti aircraft) rifle.”

According to the boy, the last mission he was charged with was in Maiduguri, to spy for the group, as he often did before attacks were carried out.

He, however, decided to change his mind on his way to Maiduguri.

“I was tired of killing people against my wish, so I told my two other colleagues with whom we were asked to go on a spying mission that we should abandon the mission and run.

“So I came to Maiduguri to search for my parents in the camps. But some IDPs who knew me as member of Boko Haram decided to report me to the security people,” he said.

Apparently looking unkempt, the teenager said he belonged to the Mamman Nur group of Boko Haram, adding that there were hundreds of young boys like him currently in the bush working for Boko Haram.

The Commandant of NSCDC, Ibrahim Abdullahi, paraded the young boy alongside other nine criminals who were arrested for other offences.

Great Britain will have to do without their top ranked tennis star, Andy Murray for the Davis Cup quarterfinals against France next month.

The British tennis star was forced to withdraw from the ongoing Miami Open due to the elbow injury.

Great Britain will have to do with Dan Evans, Kyle Edmund, Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot against a France team that have five players in the top 25 singles ranking.

Team captain Leon Smith said: “This is a team with significant Davis Cup experience now and these guys have all stepped up and delivered performances at the very top of the competition.

“Not having Andy in the side is obviously a big loss to our team but most importantly we all wish him well for a speedy recovery back to full health and fitness. I know that he would really want to be here with the rest of the team.

“Facing France in a Davis Cup tie is a tough test for any group of players and this Rouen quarter-final will be no exception. They have the strongest depth of squad by far out of any nation in the competition.”

Hearn: Haye Needs Bellew To Progress His Career

Featured Image

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn believes the only way David Haye’s career can progress is if he avenges his defeat to Tony Bellew.

Haye was nursing the idea of challenging AJ to a title fight, but that hit a snag, after he was beaten by Bellew last month. And since his recovery from an Achilles injury, the former two-weight champion has been talking about a rematch.

“Never say never, especially in the heavyweight division,” Bellew’s promoter Hearn exclusively told Sky Sports.

“AJ and Haye is completely dead at the moment. The only fight for Haye is Tony Bellew.

“I have listened to his social media stuff, he’s got aspirations of challenging for the world heavyweight title. I think he’s good enough to go on and do that, but he just got stopped by Bellew. Injury or no injury, whatever, he lost the fight.

“The only fight for Haye is Bellew. Bellew has five or six options. We understand the demand for Haye-Bellew II and it’s certainly something that we would look at.”

Hearn insists that, after Bellew agreed to Haye’s demands to arrange their first fight, negotiations for a rematch could prove problematic.

“Don’t forget in that first fight, Bellew had to agree to a lot of things that he didn’t want to, in order to get the opportunity, so that’s probably going to be the biggest stumbling block,” Hearn said.

“That seed is in his mind now, that now he gets those pluses out of the fight. But Tony understands it’s a big fight. Tony has really built his career on having fights that the public want to see, so he’s more than willing to do that next.

“He does talk about retiring, but I’m going to dangle so many fishes in front of him that I think that’s impossible. [I expect] a shot at the world heavyweight title, or the David Haye rematch.”

SCHICK Magazine is set to launch in  Nigeria and across Africa.

Curated for the smart, stylish and successful woman, SCHICK Magazine is designed to tell authentic African stories, through the lens of fashion, beauty and lifestyle.

“I remember moving back to Nigeria in 2012 and realising the wide gap between creative talent, especially fashion designers and we, the customers. I knew then that we had to make a collective effort to close the gap and build our fashion industry further,” Founder and Editor-in-Chief of SCHICK Magazine, Simi Esiri explains. “I knew my experience, as well as my appreciation for luxury and affordability, could contribute significantly to bringing these two groups of people closer.”

The debut issue, themed ‘The Power Issue’ celebrates African women playing pivotal roles in shaping the fashion, beauty and entertainment industries across the continent. Page after page, the Spring edition, is an embodiment of all Africa has to offer and takes readers on a journey through fashion editorials, interviews with A-list celebrities and fashion designers, hot debates, beauty, travel and more.

The document, it was leant, was signed by the Director, Industry Development of the ministry, Mr. Adewale Bakare, who added that such action would revive the sector, create jobs and preserve foreign exchange.

The document stated: “As you are aware, government has overtime engaged tomato industry stakeholders on ways to deepen the industry and particularly, encourage the use of locally produced tomato fruits across the value chain. It is in that regard that I am directed to bring to your notice the decision of the government towards boosting production and attracting investments into the tomato sector.

“These include ‘classification of greenhouse equipment as agricultural equipment to attract zero per cent import duty. Ban on the importation of tomato paste, powder or concentrate put up for retailing and others Ban on tomato prepared or preserved by vinegar or acetic acid and others.

“Increase in the tariff on the tomato concentrate and other concentrates (HS Code 2002.90.11.000) from five percent to 50 percent and additional levy of $1,500 per metric tons with the objective of increasing the current tariff from five percent to 50 percent (35percent +5 percent+10 percent) and an additional levy of US$1,500 metric ton. Restriction on the importation of tomato concentrates to the seaports to address abuse of ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation scheme (ETLS) and inclusion of tomato production and processing in the list of industries eligible for investment incentives administered by the Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC).”

He added that it would also be used to document history of insurgents, their victims, fallen soldiers and relevant materials in order to preserve lessons learnt from the crisis and to attract local and foreign tourists.

Shettima also paid tribute to the armed forces for their successes in suppressing the Boko Haram, noting that the people of Borno State will remain indebted to all those who made contributions to addressing the Boko Haram crisis and it’s effects.

The governor also declared Dec. 22 of every year as Public Holiday to celebrate the defeat of the Boko Haram terrorists by the Nigerian military.

“The Borno Government will from this year begin to declare Dec. 22 as Sambisa Memorial Day.

“This day will be marked as Public Holiday in Borno for the purpose of celebrating the strength and the victory of our Armed Forces,” Shettima said.

He explained that the day would also be used for remembering victims of the Boko Haram terrorism and the families they had left behind.
