Lahm: Blame Dortmund For Uncompetitive Title Race

Featured Image

Philipp Lahm believes the fans must blame Dortmund and not Bayern Munich for how uncompetitive the title race is this season .

Bayern are 13 points ahead of second placed RB Leipzig, with Dortmund a further two points back with nine games left.

Lahm will be retiring at the end of the season and is set to win his fifth straight Bundesliga title.

He told Stern: “Borussia Dortmund are an unbelievably talented team who could have made the Bundesliga title race a lot closer. Although you have to say the rest of the Bundesliga lacks quality.

“I don’t think Bayern Munich alone is responsible for how good we are doing. If we are 13 points clear after 25 games, it means that other well-positioned clubs like Schalke or Wolfsburg have not been set up to win consistently.

“The financial situation in the league wasn’t that different in the years we finished second and fourth.”

Mourinho Not For Friendlies

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho has stated he is totally against friendlies after seeing two of his players, Phil Jones and Chris Small in pick up injuries on duty for England.

Jones could not play for the England team, after he picked up a toe injury in training, inflicted on him by smalling.

Smalling had to leave the squad, after sustaining a leg injury in the match against Germany, leaving Mourinho doubting the importance of friendlies.

“I am totally against the friendly matches,” he told Soccer Saturday. “I think friendly matches for the national team only make sense before the final phases.

“A couple of weeks before the Euros or a couple of weeks before the World Cup makes sense. But mid-season friendly matches mixed with qualification matches, I don’t think that makes sense.

“On top of that the matches are not really big matches so I am not a big fan. But I think one day I will be there so I cannot be very critical.”

“I don’t know how but both central defenders got injured in the English camp even before the match,” Mourinho added.

“The match was on the Sunday against Lithuania and they were injured in the training session. We lost four, I think [Paul] Pogba is also out, that’s five, so we are a bit in trouble.

“I watched Valencia’s match yesterday in Ecuador, Marcos Rojo in Bolivia, but they don’t arrive until Thursday afternoon.

“If you compare our situation with our opponents, West Bromwich Albion, only one player on international duty. They had time to work, time to rest and prepare. It’s going to be hard.”

Froch: Klitschko Will Bring His Best Against AJ

Featured Image

Carl Froch has stated that Anthony Joshua should be prepared to face Wladimir Klitschko at his best.

Klitschko has not fought for over 18 months and he’ll be 41 when he faces Anthony Joshua at Wembley.

The Ukrainian boxer lost his IBF, WBA and WBO world titles to Fury back in November 2015.

“We know Klitschko is an ageing fighter but with age comes wisdom and the experience he’s got,” he told Sky Sports News HQ.

“He’s had 68 fights and he was unbeaten in 10 years as a heavyweight up until he faced Tyson Fury and that was an awkward, torrid night for him.

“He had problems in the background with his wife [Hayden Panettiere] going through post-natal depression and it wasn’t publicised much but if he had something else on his mind, wasn’t switched on and on top of that had someone like Tyson Fury goading him, smiling and doing his weird dance for 12 rounds, he just couldn’t get going.

“We may just see the best – and last – of Wladimir Klitschhko.

“It’s at Wembley Stadium and if he is thinking this is my final fight on this stage – with 90,000 not 80,000 – and if he thinks to himself this is it for me, my exit card, my final fight you know he is going to turn up.”

Dino Melaye on academic gown

Dino Melaye on academic gown

On this latest Dino Melaye versus SaharaReporters affair, apart from engaging in a little jokey exchange with some friends over the matter just a while ago, I have kept my mouth firmly shut. This is because since Mr. Melaye and his Senate friends in the form of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah tried late last year to introduce a harebrained law to shut down free speech on social media, I’ve always considered him a sandwich short of a picnic. In other words, ignoring him seemed the most sensible way to deal with his menace.

This piece was written by Kennedy Emetulu. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Of course, I’ve observed his capacity for grand public idiocy and senseless self-publicity since his days in the House of Representatives, but considering he’s offered nothing of value by way of public policy, my policy of ignoring him seemed even more sensible. So, when this latest episode started, I had naturally applied my default position. But, at this point, silence is no longer an option. Mr. Melaye is taking the biscuit, and he’s turned the institutions of the Nigerian Senate and the great Ahmadu Bello University into his dip to enjoy his illicit confectionery.

I think the real lesson we have learnt from this whole affair is that our Senators and Vice Chancellors have too much time on their hands. In other words, we are not getting value for money in both cases. I mean, how do you explain a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria having the time, in a recession, to be running around proclaiming he has multiple degrees (when he obviously does not know the difference between degrees, diplomas, and certificates), singing silly songs, dancing silly dances and wearing funny academic gowns to the plenary session of the Senate while marching from Abuja to New York threatening to sue SaharaReporters for daring to say he did not graduate from the Ahmadu Bello University?

Dino: 21st-Century Crook, 17th-Century University

The Senate actually found the time to sit to look at this allegation and invite the Vice Chancellor of a top national university who drove for over three hours to come see them for about twenty minutes only to say a former student who is now a Senator actually graduated from the school with a Third Class degree. I mean, do they need the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Garba to confirm what should be on record, a record that the subject of the investigation should have, a record the Senate could have simply called for? Why does Dino Melaye not have a hard copy of the degree supposedly issued to him by the university indicating he made a Third Class in Geography in 2000? And if the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions was keen on doing a fair and thorough job, why did they not invite Omoyele Sowore and SaharaReporters? They used the excuse of Senator Ali Ndume as the accuser, and he was duly there to play the Pantomime Villain finally converted by Dino Melaye’s barrage of certificates, even though the only certificate actually needed was not presented. More crucially, his so-called petition was not even in writing as required!

The more depressing aspect of the whole thing is to listen to people who should know better, taking sides and debating agitatedly about who is right or who is wrong. Honestly, this is all embarrassing. Dino Melaye’s elaborate drama is uncalled for. It diminishes the upper house of our national legislature and the way the Senators have handled it raises questions about the caliber of persons we have there. At the very least, it calls to question the quality of people in leadership there.

The matter was not a Senate matter at any level. If Dino Melaye felt libeled by the claim, the only forum open to him is the court of law. Going to the Senate to be justified by his friends is an abuse of parliamentary privilege. The same for the appearance of the Vice Chancellor. When all is said and done, there still is no evidence that Dino Melaye has a degree indicating that he graduated from Ahmadu Bello University. The mere words of the present Vice Chancellor sixteen years after he supposedly did this degree do not constitute proof. The only proof is a certified original copy of a degree issued to him at the time he was supposed to have graduated. We have seen all sorts of documentation in public space, but we are yet to see that. If Dino Melaye is thinking of going to court, he is better advised to be armed with a true, certified copy of the degree certificate issued on the date of graduation by the University and signed by the Vice Chancellor at the time, otherwise he will be on a hiding to nothing.

Certificate Scandal: ABU Keeps Mum As Senator Melaye’s Case Gets Messier

I’m aware that there are people who would jump in here and accuse me of supporting Omoyele Sowore and SaharaReporters because of my relationship with the man and the outfit, but that would be far from the truth. There is nothing in what I’ve said here that supports Sowore and SaharaReporters because they are not on trial. In matters of libel, Sowore and SaharaReporters can only be challenged in a proper court of law, whether in Nigeria or in the United States. So, what is the issue? Sowore and SaharaReporters made a claim that Dino Melaye finds libelous. He should simply proceed to court and let Sowore come to prove his claim. I will not criticize Sowore and SaharaReporters until the courts find against them. However, I can comment on Dino Melaye, the Vice Chancellor and the Senate’s conduct because they are public persons and institutions. My criticism of them here is not based on whether their claims are true or not, my criticism is about the way and manner they are handling the whole affair.

Therefore, anyone who wants to criticize my position should please understand my point first before criticizing me, because I will not be joining anyone in a discussion about the rights and wrongs of Sowore or SaharaReporters’ conduct, except a proper court of law finds against them. So, whoever wants to take me up on that should first encourage Dino Melaye to go to court, start the proceedings and serve Omoyele Sowore and SaharaReporters. And while he’s doing that, he and his colleagues in the Senate should knuckle down to real work in the Senate. They are not part of the Awada Kerikeri circus. They are Honourable Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

UNIJOS Dissolves SUG Following Disagreement Over N45,000 School Charges

Featured Image

The authorities of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have dissolved the Student Union Government (SUG) executives following disagreement between the school management and the union over the implementation of the N45,000 harmonised school charges.

Students React As UNIJOS Raises School Fees From N27,000 To N45,000

This is just as the institution replaced it with a five-man Caretaker Committee, Daily Trust reports.

The decision is coming after the university management and students reached an impasse after several meetings.

It is understood that the SUG urged students to delay any payment of the 2016/2017 school fees while the university insisted that payment of the harmonized charges was compulsory.

In a statement issued by the institution’s Principal Assistant Registrar, Information and Publications, Abdullahi Abdullahi, the management said that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sebastian Maimako while inaugurating the Caretaker Committee said the decision of the SUG to convene a meeting of students without due approval from the Directorate of Students Affairs which resulted in a protest where the students were carrying placards against the school administration for implementing a Federal Government’s directive led to the students union’s dissolution.

The statement reads: “the SUG officials had similarly mobilized students to attend the stakeholders meeting with parents uninvited and were shouting down parents during the course of the meeting.”

It added that other reasons for the dissolution include; “externalizing an internal issue affecting the university without following the acceptable laid down procedures for conflict resolution in the university, intimidating and issuing threats to law abiding students including fresh students who are willing to comply with the payment of the new school charge.”

In the statement, the school management also accused the SUG officials of maligning the Principal Officers of the university including the Vice-Chancellor on various media platforms including the social media while misinforming members of the public on the action taken by the university in the process of implementing the new school charge.

Meanwhile, the five-man Caretaker Committee has Wuyep Gideon Nansar as Chairman, Timdi Nkat as Secretary, Yilmazaka Philip Gershinen, Idi Christopher Ishaku and Ekweozor Chukugozie Nzube as Members.

JAMB Speaks On Why It Introduced The E-Pin

Featured Image

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Wednesday said it introduced the new e-PIN vending registration for candidates to prevent fraud in its examination.

2017 UTME: Dear Jambites, Here’s How To Create Your Profile On The JAMB Portal

This disclosure was made by the JAMB Acting Zonal Coordinator in Nasarawa State, Moses Akobu, in Lafia.

While saying that the new e-PIN was not introduced to create hardship for candidates, Akobu urged candidates to remain calm as the board was doing its best to tackle hitches being experienced during the registration.

He said: “In the past, JAMB asked candidates to buy scratch cards from banks and do their registration in the cybercafé of their choice.

“But the board discovered that in the process, candidates encountered problems such as mismatching of names and passports.

“This mismatch often create problem on the day of the examination.’’

He said some cybercafés often exploit candidates by charging them excessive fees outside the JAMB’s recommended N5,500.

“For example, some cybercafés charge fees ranging between N7,000 and N8000, which is not supposed to be.

“When the new JAMB registrar came on board, he identified these lapses and introduced the e-PIN vending in order to prevent fraud and solve the problem of mismatching.

“The system is good because it is error free and the JAMB will have a direct contact with all prospective candidates through their valid email addresses,’’ he said.

According to him, the desire of JAMB is to serve the candidates better and it is ready to do.

“So the hitches they are experiencing now will be over in a matter of few days,’’ said the JAMB official.

The zonal coordinator added that the major challenge of generating e-PIN for the candidates being faced by the banks was due to poor network.

Prospective candidates are in long queues waiting to get the e-PIN across designated banks in the state.

Claudio Ranieri Admits Leicester City Sacking Was A ‘Huge’ Shock

Featured Image

Claudio Ranieri has admitted news of his dismissal as Leicester manager came as a huge shock.

The 65-year-old Italian was removed from his post in February, nine months after leading the Foxes to an unexpected Premier League title.

Ranieri has kept a low profile since, but appeared on stage this week at Rebibbia prison in his homeland in a ceremony to honour regional football coaches in Italy.

And speaking in front of inmates, he revealed his astonishment at being told of his sacking, which came the day after Leicester’s first-leg defeat to Sevilla in the Champions League last 16 – a tie they eventually went on to win.

“Thinking of Leicester, the first thing that comes to mind is the sense of surprise, even more than bitterness,” said Ranieri, in quotes reported by Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I have been through a lot in my long career, but never anything like this.

“It was a shock, but in the end these things are part of football.”

Brazil Qualify For 2018 World Cup While Argentina And Uruguay Struggle

Featured Image

Brazil on Tuesday became the first nation to qualify for next year’s World Cup, joining hosts Russia, with a dominant 3-0 win over Paraguay – clinching an eighth consecutive victory.

FIFA Bans Messi For Four World Cup Qualifying Games

This is just as Bolivia took advantage of Lionel Messi’s absence to claim a comfortable 2-0 victory, harming Argentina’s hopes of World Cup qualification in La Paz.

Argentina had been rocked just hours before kick-off after confirmation Messi had been hit with a four-match ban following a ruling from disciplinary chiefs at world governing body FIFA in Zurich.

The Barcelona superstar was stunned after being suspended for four of Argentina’s five remaining World Cup qualification matches for swearing at an official in a game against Chile last week.

Messi’s suspension left Argentina coach Edgardo Bauza forced to make a hasty reshuffle to his starting line-up, bringing in Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa in attack while leaving Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero on the bench.

But Argentina, clearly struggling in the thin air of La Paz, which is 3,600 metres (11,800 feet) above sea level, were well beaten at the Estadio Hernando Siles.

Following Uruguay’s upset 2-1 defeat to Peru in the day’s final South American qualifier combined with other results meant Brazil are mathematically guaranteed a place at next year’s finals in Russia.

Germany Coach Joachim Loew Believes Hoffenheim’s Manager Julian Nagelsmann Can Succeed Him

Featured Image

Germany’s head coach Joachim Loew has named rising Bundesliga manager Julian Nagelsmann, 29, as a possible future successor to take charge of the national team.

Hoffenheim’s Nagelsmann is the youngest head coach in Bundesliga history and was last week named coach of 2016 in Germany.

The 57-year-old Loew steered his country to the Brazil 2014 World Cup title and has been head coach since 2006.

He is the most successful Germany national team boss of all time having won 97 of his 145 internationals in charge, with 25 draws and 23 defeats.

Under his stewardship, the Germans have reached at least the semi-finals of all World Cups and European championships in the last decade.

But Nagelsmann is one of Germany’s rising star coaches having kept Hoffenheim up last season, then turned them into Champions League contenders this campaign — they are currently fourth in Germany’s top flight.

And Loew is a big fan of Nagelsmann.

“Maybe he will be the national coach one day,” Loew told magazine Sport Bild.
“He has a lot of competency, empathy, and a good connection to the players, so if he keeps going as he has done so far, I’m convinced he’s going to be a great coach.
“He’s made Hoffenheim candidates for the European Cup after years fighting relegation, developed players well and integrated others who had no chance elsewhere.

“I think a lot of him.”
Loew has a contract with the German Football Association (DFB) until after the 2020 European championships and has said his goal is to see Germany successfully defend the World Cup title in Russia next year.

Sporting Lisbon Not Concerned About Reports Linking Rui Patricio To Arsenal

Featured Image

He’s been linked with succeeding Petr Cech as Arsenal’s No. 1 but, according to Portuguese newspaper Record, interest in goalkeeper Rui Patricio is of no concern to Sporting Lisbon’s president.

Bruno de Carvalho has reiterated he wants the 29-year-old Portugal international to finish his career at the Estadio Jose Alvalade and is confident Patricio will stay.

Reports have suggested that Arsenal are lining up a £13 million bid for Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper Patricio as a replacement for Petr Cech,

Cech, 34, has looked unconvincing at times this season, while David Ospina has been unable to take advantage and claim the No.1 shirt for himself.

Patricio, six years Cech’s junior, as a standout performer for Portugal as they won Euro 2016, and was named in the team of the tournament. The Portuguese keeper has been capped 57 times for his country, while clocking up almost 400 appearances for the Primeira Liga side since graduating from their youth academy in 2006.

“Once again, next season I am the head coach of Hoffenheim.”

BREAKING: Senate Suspends Ex-leader Ali Ndume For 6 Months

Featured Image

The Senate on Wednesday suspended former Majority Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, for six months.

The lawmakers at the upper chamber dealt Ndume with the suspension for not “making due diligence” before filing a petition against the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki and lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye.

The former leader had asked for investigation of allegations of importing a bullet proof range rover with fake documents involving Saraki and that of perjury involving Melaye.

The Senate agreed on the decision today at the plenary after the resolution to uphold the recommendation of the committee on ethics and privileges chaired by Samuel Anyanwu.

Ndume is now suspended for six months instead of the one year originally recommended by the ethics committee with the suspension to take effect immediately.

The Senate had on March 21, decided to investigate the allegation that an armoured Range Rover car said to worth N298m – but which the lawmakers said cost $298,000, and was seized by the Nigeria Customs Service – belongs to Saraki.

The investigation was based on a point of order raised by Ndume, who also called on the upper chamber of the National Assembly to investigate the certificate scandal involving Senator Dino Melaye.

However, Mr. Anyanwu, whose committee convened investigative hearing on the two matters on Monday, reported that Mr. Ndume failed to conduct proper investigation before making “the allegations”.

Details later…

The names of the two new ministerial nominees were sent in a letter that arrived the Senate on Tuesday evening for confirmation.

How Senate Suspended Confirmation Of 27 RECs Because Of EFCC’s Magu

Senate President Bukola Saraki today read Mr. Buhari’s letter and further requested the screening and confirmation of the two ministerial nominees at the plenary.

Mr. Ocheni is from Kogi State which has not had anyone in the FEC, as constitutionally required, since the death of James Ochonu in an accident last year.

Mr. Hassan, Gombe State, is to replace Amina Mohammed who left Nigeria’s public service to take up top responsibility at the United Nations.

The list of ministerial nominees is coming at a  time when the Senate stood down for two weeks consideration of the request of President Buhari for the appointment of Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).

The Senate based its decision on what it termed disregard for its resolutions.

The upper legislative chamber specifically berated the President for appearing to be doing nothing about the rejection of Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of the EFCC but allowing him to function in acting capacity.

The senate stressed that it was wrong to leave any appointee in acting capacity even after he had been rejected twice by the senate.

NPS Establishes Second All-Female Prison In Nigeria

Featured Image

The Senate on Tuesday stood down the confirmation of 27 Resident Electoral Commissioners(REC) for two weeks.

This was in protest of what the senate termed disregard for decisions of the National Assembly particularly the Senate.

With particular reference, senators who contributed expressed displeasure that the Presidency was yet to take a decision on the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.

They warned that the current action of the executive was setting a wrong precedence and was a threat to the nation’s democracy.

Sen. Peter  Nwaboshi (PDP-Delta) said recent comments by Prof. Itse Sagay, Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption, on the senate’s  power to confirm nominees of the president was uncalled for.

“Prof Sagay said the senate merely confirms. This  is unexpected of a professor of law, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria about such a big body.

“You can imagine the type of advice this kind of person is giving to the President. We can’t destroy democracy because anybody thinks only their believe should subsist.”

“When they denigrate or disrespect  an institution of  this calibre it is worrisome.’’

The senator therefore moved for the suspension of consideration of the the request of President Buhari for the confirmation of Resident Electoral Commissioners.

He said that the suspension should last until such a time when the Senate is recognised as an arm of government and its powers are also respected.

Sen. Matthew Uhroghide(PDP-Edo) said the  laws establishing the agencies  of government  showed clearly that heads of the agencies and some officers needed to be confirmed by the National Assembly.

According to him, disregarding the senate is worrisome because  it is the statutory role of the legislature to so.

“If by chance names are not confirm, President is at liberty to re-nominate but the National Assembly  has to be properly briefed.

Recently we took a decision on some  nominees  of the President but we don’t know what happened.

“Some of these people cannot be acting. Unfortunately Mr Ibrahim Magu is still acting as EFCC Chairman.

“If the President knew he was not going to honour our stand he should not have sent his name.

He also called for the suspension of the president’s  request  to send the message that the National Assembly was a serious body that should not be disregarded.

The Deputy Chief Whip, Francis Alimikhena  said Mr Ibrahim Magu, who ought not to be working in acting capacity after his rejection by the Senate, was still doing so.

He further said“ Magu is terrorizing us because  we disqualified him. This request should be stood down to send a strong message to the executive that the institution cannot be ridiculed.’’

However, Sen. Adamu Aliero(APC-Kebbi) pleaded with lawmakers to consider the request in view of their importance to the 2019 general elections.

He said, “the submission of the REC list is important if not INEC will not be ready for the election.

“I ask exceptionally for us to consider the screening and if there is any observation it should be done at the screening stage.

Also, the Deputy Leader, Bala Na’Allah pleaded with the lawmakers to consider the list for confirmation

According to him, we must show a level of maturity rather than declining on our duty because of the actions of the executive.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, said the senate was not responsible for the delay in the appointment of the commissioners, as their positions had been vacant for about a year.

“If there is any delay it is not from here. The executive knows the positions were vacant, so it is not our fault.

“Under the Constitution, if the President is travelling he can write to us and his Vice  would act in his absence.

“Also if Chief Justice of Nigeria  is unable to perform his duties, the President can appoint the person next in line.

Outside that, no position in our law has that privilege. I stand to be corrected. Those that drafted the Constitution are not stupid, so we must be seen to be defending our constitution.

He, however pleaded that the lawmakers should heed to the appeal of some of the lawmakers for the list to be suspended pending when the senate communicated with the President on the matter.

“I appeal that we leave it for one week or two for the President of the Senate to convey our grievances to President Buhari.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki pleaded with the senators to only suspend the consideration for a few weeks, rather than refusing to consider it.

While he shared in the sentiments of the lawmakers, he pleaded with them to agree to its suspension  pending when the matter was resolved.

“This matter needs to be resolved  for us to go forward. If I put a question is obvious we all want the list to be stood down  but can we stand it  down for a week?

“Since today is Tuesday, we can leave it till  next week Tuesday. I’m appealing to you.

It can be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari  forwarded the names of 27 Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) to the Senate for confirmation.

The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, on March 23, read the letter  dated Feb. 27.

It was  signed on behalf of President Buhari by Vice President  Yemi Osinbajo.
