Wenger: Arsenal Came Prepared To Fight

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger was quite proud of his players, who he said came prepared to fight, as Arsenal earned a point after playing 2-2 against Manchester City to snap their two-game winless league run.

This season has seen Wenger come under the worst pressure he has ever faced. The Gunners poor run of firm in the Champions League and EPL has led to protests from fans and aeroplane banners calling for the frenchman to leave.

Despite starting the game slow and on the back foot, Arsenal came from behind twice to earn a well deserved draw at the Emirates.

“You could see we started very nervously and under pressure, and you can see that it had a big impact on our fluency,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

“We had strong mental resources and refused to lose the game. You could see the team was ready for the fight eventually. On the mental front it was a very strong performance, and on a technical front I think we could do better.

“But at the end of the day, when you come out of a few disappointing results and play a big game, the first priority is not to lose. I think we went for it. We had plenty of attacking players on the pitch.

“In the end we got a point. You could say mathematically it’s not good for them or for us. But we’ve come out of such a stressful period, and I think this still mentally has a positive impact on our team.”

Just In: 2017 UTME: JAMB Introduces Remita To Ease Pin Purchase For Registration

Featured Image

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says that eligible candidates for its 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) can now purchase the pin for registration using the Remita mode.

The board on Sunday said the development came on the heels of the reported challenges the candidates faced in an attempt to acquire the pins from NIPOST and the designated banks.

JAMB And Nigerian Banks Trade Blames Over 2017 UTME Registration Delay

The Head of Information of JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, said the board had noted the many headaches of prospective candidates from various parts of the country, including Lagos.

He said that candidates had lamented the difficulties involved in obtaining the pins from designated banks on the payment of N5,500 and the subsequent hassles in getting registered.

The registration of candidates for the examination started on March 20.

The candidates had described the process as cumbersome and frustrating as they have to queue as early as 2 or 3 a.m. in some cases in banks just to acquire pins.

They had also said that often times, they spent the entire day waiting endlessly without results as the bank officials tell them that they could not access the site for the pins.

They also said the development normally warranted them to spend almost an entire week trying and that even when they succeeded, they start facing the task of registration at overcrowded centres.

According to Benjamin, candidates are advised not to panic as every eligible candidate desirous of registering will do so before the closing date of April 19.

“We appreciate the fact that the sales of the UTME for 2017 which is hitherto set to last for six has been reduced to one month.

“This was done in the interest of the candidates as it was to ensure that the challenges candidates are going through are resolved.

“To further cushion the effect of these challenges, we have decided to bring the Remitta mode on board.

“Candidates can now purchase the pin for registration from the comfort of their homes.

“So, aside the banks and NIPOST, candidates can now purchase the pins through Remita,’’ Benjamin said in a statement.

The statement explained why the board banned cyber cafes from registering candidates for the examination, noting that activities in the cafes damaged records and statistics of candidates.

“In as much as we want to be inclusive, we cannot look the other way while students’ records and national statistics are mutilated.

“Ours is an examination, so we cannot be guided by primordial consideration over quality and standard,’’ it said.

According to the statement, most problems associated with candidates’ registration such as wrong spellings of names, wrongful placement of passport photograph and others emanates from the business centres at registration points.

“Don’t forget, it is virtually impossible to regulate the activities of these business centres as their mode of operations did not provide necessary details about them.

“These problems created by cafes make information gathering, processing and administration of examination cumbersome as records and data of candidates are distorted.

“The accreditation centres are on the board’s website for easy identification cohesion and smooth operation,’’ it explained.

He added that the board would continue to expand the frontiers and channels of the sales of the pins in virtually all the banks, with a view to bringing the services to the door step of every Nigerian child desirous of qualitative tertiary education.

According to the statement, examination is a serious business and it cannot be left open the way some people want it to be.

“We again urge Nigerians particularly anxious candidates not to fall prey to unsuspecting and dubious individuals who parade themselves as agents of JAMB with the intention to defraud them.

“The board’s e-brochures and syllabus are on the CD to be given out to candidates and it is free and available as a guide to candidates to have a hitch-free registration exercise,’’ the statement said.

“I’d like to be the best player in the world but there’s a lot of work to be done between now and then.

“Everybody’s journey is different. I needed a little more time and a little more experience to accumulate the knowledge that I have and re-use it in my matches.

“I play smart tennis and calmer tennis, I think. It just took time. On paper it looks like a quick turnaround but it’s been a long time coming.”

Rodgers: Celtic Will Be In Top Six Of EPL

Featured Image

Celtic boss, Brendan Rodgers is confident his side will be successful in the Premier League and be in the top six.

Celtic claimed their sixth consecutive Scottish premiership trophy, when they thrashed Hearts 5-0. They’ve not lost a game domestically, winning 28 out of 30 matches.

Rodgers is aware he must strengthen his squad ahead of the champions league and believes his team would triumph in the topflight of the EPL.

Rodgers told Sky Sports: “Could we play in the Premier League? Yes, we could.

“I have absolutely no doubt about it because we’ve got the Celtic factor. We have 60,000 every other week. Without the money alone, this team would compete in the Premier League.

“We took a Swansea team who won the Championship into the Premier League and we finished 11th but for us and what we were trying to do that was very, very good.

“But this is Celtic. This is one of the great iconic clubs in the world so there is no doubt that with this group we could go in [there and compete]. Imagine the backing then. Celtic would be one of the minimum top four, top six clubs in the English Premier League and then that puts you on a different level altogether.”

Bilic Has Backing Of West Ham Board

Featured Image

Slaven Bilic’s job is still very secure, as the manager has received the backing of the West Ham board.

The statement issued says the manager’s job is not under risk and they have faith in him. West Ham have not won a league game since February.

Reports emerged that Bilic was to be replaced in the summer. However, the board has refuted such claims and has backed their manager once again.

The statement read: “To end speculation once and for all, the West Ham United Board feel it necessary to announce that we have 100 per cent faith in Slaven Bilic’s ability to lead West Ham United.

“Despite press speculation to the contrary, the manager’s position is not under threat.

“The Board know that Slaven and his coaching staff have the full backing of the playing squad and the overwhelming majority of supporters to lead West Ham United out of this difficult spell.

“The Board now urge all supporters to unite behind the manager, his staff and the squad as we go into some important games.

“We all have complete confidence in their ability to end a testing run of results and finish the season on a high.”

Bilic said after Saturday’s defeat: “I can expect more (speculation) of course. But so what? I’m doing my job.”

CBN Promises To Sustain Foreign Exchange Liquidity

Featured Image

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Sunday reiterated its determination to sustain the provision of foreign exchange with a view to ensuring liquidity in the market and enhance accessibility and affordability for genuine end users.

The apex bank’s acting Director, Corporate Communications, Isaac Okorafor, in a statement on Sunday said the bank wants to disabuse the notion by market speculators that it wouldn’t be able to sustain its forex intervention.

He said that the bank would again, early this week, inject more foreign exchange into the market, leading to a further weakening of the dollar.

“This is in addition to the further increase in the sale of dollars to the Bureau de change operators from 8,000 dollars to 10,000 dollars per week,’’ he said

Mr. Okorafor warned commercial banks and other dealers to desist from sabotaging the efforts aimed at making life easier for foreign exchange end users.

According to Mr. Okorafor, the CBN had received complaints from customers over frustrations in getting foreign exchange for invisible items like tuition fee, medicals, personal and basic travel allowance.

The Bank urged the general public to report to it, any bank that failed to meet customers’ needs after due documentation.

It once again reiterated its determination to deal with any official or institution found to be sabotaging the operations of foreign exchange market in whatever guise.

It would be recalled that the Naira closed at N394 to a dollar on Friday, which translated to 10 per cent depreciation of what was recorded earlier in the week.

The depreciation was attributed to the alleged hoarding of forex by banks rather than selling to genuine customers.

Analyst believe that with the twice weekly sale to BDCs up to 20,000 dollars, the Naira is likely to appreciate in the coming week.

For Nigeria, Did God Really Say, “Let There Be No Light”?

For Nigeria, Did God Really Say, “Let There Be No Light”?, By ‘Tope Fasua

“An age was called ‘Dark’, not because the light failed to shine, but because people refused to see it.” – James Michener

This piece was written by Tope Fasua. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Owei Lakemfa, one of Nigeria’s best columnists recently titled his write-up “Let There be Light, But Not in Nigeria”, in a throwback to the very beginning of creation, when God commanded, “Let there be light!”. The next verse goes, “And there was light”. According to Biblical accounts, before God gave that command, the Earth was formless and in a depressing state of darkness. That singular command changed everything. According to Owei, perhaps God also gave a command that Nigeria as a country should not be part of the equation. What we are seeing these days is a total breakdown of the process by which there could be sustainable electricity in the land. As a matter of fact, for most Nigerians, this country may be plowing through its own Dark Ages – an age where the sun shone each morning and blazed in the afternoon, but people lived in darkness because Nigerians simple refused, quite vehemently and obstinately, to see the light.

I was with a group of middle managers from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) recently. Among other issues, we discussed the state of electricity in Nigeria and I gave them feedback from the Nigerian masses; that we believe TCN is the problem with Nigeria’s electricity. Highly educated Nigerians argue that TCN is the last vestige of government ownership in that sector, government having sold off the aspects of electricity generation and distribution, and so it must be the jinx that still ails the electricity sector. Those who are ‘enlightened’ believe government should privatise the entire spectrum, but would that solve the problem? Maybe, maybe not. Nigerians believe, one way or another, that government is still to hold responsible for the failure to deliver electricity. And by God, Nigerians are right. When government ran the whole show, things were pathetic. But now that they’ve privatised most of the value chain, things are beyond dismal. Our friend and ex-governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola boasted that any serious government should be able to fix electricity in six months. He has spent more than a year battling with the issues, seemingly losing the war and getting his reputation whitewashed all at once. What could be wrong with Nigeria’s electricity sector? Are we truly jinxed?

My friends from TCN mounted a spirited defence for their organisation, which is what prompted this article. They explained that even they – TCN – were owed over N100 billion by electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) for services rendered; and that there were times the TCN had to inform generating companies (GENCOs) not to generate electricity because the DISCOs were not ready to take this. The DISCOs are not taking electricity because Nigerians are not paying.

The entire infrastructure should simply be built on Nigerians paying for electricity. But years of blind stealing and sabotage has created a gaping hole in that sector that may never be filled. Higher tariffs are being contemplated, to make Nigerians pay for the sins of the past, but people are staunchly resisting these and rightly so.

For starters, government agencies are some of the biggest debtors. As I type this, many of our federal government agencies have been cut off by the DISCOs. But that cannot last for long as the DISCOs will soon be arm-twisted to do the needful. For the government agencies, it is a case of misplaced priorities and sheer impunity. They usually have the money to make themselves comfortable. You visit these agencies and they look like luxury car lots. If they refrained from buying that extra car, they’d be able to pay their electricity bills and the entire infrastructure will be under less pressure. Meanwhile, if state and federal secretariats refuse to pay their electricity bills, you can trust that the police and army barracks won’t bother as well. Some of them have owed for decades and no one can approach them. Our leaders have been so irresponsible, not being able to do right by this country by focusing us on the things that matter. We seem to have arrived at an epoch where anyone just acts as they like. Pity. According to reports, government agencies are owing more than N156billion.

Ordinarily, we should be back to the scenario whereby Nigerians pay for services enjoyed so that the wheel of progress can keep turning. What is the result? Many issues crop up. The imminent collapse of the sector – which saw more than 20 system shut downs (six total collapse and 16 partial) in the last one year – has led to government putting up taxpayers’ money as bailout for these private companies which intended to make a kill. In April 2015, government put up a bailout of N213 billion. Right now, the minister has announced another bailout of N701 billion as guarantee fund for services rendered by these private sector players.

Still, the DISCOs, who now interface with the public, claim that Nigerians people are not paying for electricity. Perhaps they are giving up. I am aware of some of the wars between customers and service providers in some rural areas. I once spoke to a staff of KEDCO (Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company), who told of how they are sometimes beaten, and how their management is so heartless by telling them to administer estimated billing (flat charges) in poor areas like Sabon Tasha where they did not supply any electricity.

All of these problems have led to a situation where most rural areas in Nigeria have not seen five minutes of electricity for the past three years. Some of them for seven years. As long as the electricity infrastructure in these rural areas are moribund and unused, vandals will simply make away with what the government has bought with untold amounts. Transformers will be stolen, feeder pillars will be cannibalised, cables will be removed and the entire grid system will be compromised. Even if the infrastructure were intact, my TCN friends tell me that electricity cannot be supplied to a few people in a community, who have meters. I had thought that with the meters, anyone who refuses to pay for electricity should simply not be availed of the service. They say electricity is delivered in bulk. Meanwhile, the DISCOs have pointed refused to supply even meters that people have paid for, and they seem to prefer their estimated billing regime, leading to their being accused of being fraudulent.

In short, for as long as the eye can see, except the government decides to fix the infrastructure and supply electricity to the vast majority of Nigerians for free, we should forget electricity. The DISCOs, being private sector entities, also prefer to supply only those who pay, especially if they have political, economic or media power, or they can pay a premium to grease the pockets of their operatives. Most estates in Abuja have to pay some person or the other in the nearest DISCO in order to have constant electricity. A friend told of how when he lived close to Obasanjo Library in Abeokuta he had constant electricity (because they were on the same ‘line’). He enjoyed the same good luck when he lived close to an Army barracks in Lagos, but he is suffering now as he moved to some obscure suburb where the people don’t count. I joked that if kidnappers or armed robbers had an estate exclusively for their members, DISCOs will probably know how not to deprive them of electricity.

Ordinarily this is how private sector providers behave. In California’s first experiment with privatising electricity in the early 2000s, the boys at Enron, the company that won the contract showed Californians ‘pepper’. Even in a well-regulated environment like the USA, these will switch off electricity in vast swathes of the state and only bring it back when people are dying of heat and ready to pay a much higher price. The scandal is documented and led to the ouster of Governor Gray Davis and the ascension of Arnold Schwarzenegger. If this could happen in the US, Nigeria stands no chance. These private sector guys will ensure we see hell. See this link to understand what the ENRON boys did to Californians.

My TCN friends say they expect the GENCOs and DISCOs to return their licenses in a couple of years. These private companies seem to have downgraded and streamlined their businesses to focus as much as possible on only what can pay for itself. They have since realised that they won’t be creaming off in Nigeria as quickly as they thought. Foreign partners are abandoning local ‘investors’, some of which have no technical competences before buying these asset but were driven by an opportunity for a quickly buck only. These companies have laid off tons of staff. Ordinarily Nigerian businessmen who invite their foreign ‘investor’ friends have no patience. The types of ‘investors’ they get also dine with Nigeria with a long spoon and always escape as soon as they can. We now have a scenario where DISCOs and GENCOs are at war with each other, DISCOs have issues with consumers, TCN is under accusation and also being owed, and investors are bailing.

In my own view, we have to deploy all the tricks in our pouch, and for once we need to be truthful to ourselves. This is also the time to deploy renewables and any form of alternative energy that can help the situation. I had once suggested that our building code be amended such that any middle income to luxury house comes with solar panels. No one listened. But the rich people should know that this current regime is unsustainable. Majority of Nigerians cannot sleep and wake up in darkness and we expect there not to be crime or that Nigeria will be livable for the rich. But I’m not hopeful that we can make the needed change in this matter, to be candid, because Nigeria has never been a truthful country. The darkness we are in is at once a symptom of our dark hearts, as it is a metaphor for the state of our nation. Perhaps someone signed a pact with the devil. For now, it is difficult to imagine how this conundrum will be unraveled.

Asari Dokubo Describes Buhari’s Government As Worst In Nigeria

Featured Image

Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration as the worst regime Nigeria has ever witnessed.

Asari made this known in an exclusive interview with The Punch, while speaking on the Niger Delta crisis and other national issues.

When asked: Is the Nigerian government still hostile to you?

He said: “This is the most hostile government. This is the most insensitive government in the life of this country. All our (bank) accounts were put on surveillance, till today, but they found that this man did not steal any money and he is not involved in any criminal activities. We just thank God. A lot of people think I must be corrupt but they have looked everywhere and they found nothing. This government wrote to us that it was going to pay what they were owing us for contracts we concluded and they certified that the contracts were excellently concluded but they refused to pay.”

When asked: How can Nigeria overcome the present economic crisis in the country?

He replied: “This is a deaf and dumb regime. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo is trying to placate (Niger Deltans) but that is not enough. We are talking about fundamental issues of self-determination and this issue cannot be swept under the carpet by palliative measures and all sorts of things that people are demanding.

“This is the worst government in Nigeria because they came with the mindset to kill but unfortunately, they found it very difficult to kill us. People are racketeering with the foreign exchange to the detriment of others. Some people are buying a dollar for N520, while others are buying it for as low as N185 from the Central Bank of Nigeria. So, when people are talking about fighting corruption, I laugh. What manner of corruption could be greater than giving some persons dollars at N185/N190 and others are buying at N520?

Now that Osinbajo is trying to block those cracks, the dollar and other foreign currencies have started coming down. When I was driving recently, somebody asked me to come down but I told him I have a waist problem and I cannot walk a far distance. I am not ashamed to tell somebody I cannot walk a far distance. People like Femi Fani-Kayode, Ayodele Fayose and I raised the alarm that Buhari was not (feeling) fine but people said we would be the ones to die first. We will all die but why should one lie? This is the question of integrity and Buhari has no iota of integrity.”

13 UNILAG Students Remanded In Kirikiri Prisons

Featured Image

At least 13 students of Nigeria’s prominent institution, University of Lagos (UNILAG), were remanded in Kirikiri Prisons pending their bail application, after their appearance before a Special Offences Mobile Court in Oshodi, Lagos, on Saturday, April 1, 2017.

They were arraigned by the police on a two-count charge of unlawful invasion and disruption of activities.

The accused are: Femi Adeyeye, Toni Aina, Kodri Yaya, Asimi Oladime, Ismahim Olalekan, Segun Okesola, Abdulazeez Soneye, Idris Abogunloko, and Muyiwa Olaniyi.

Others are: Toheed Oladimeji, Joseph Akanni, Lukumon Olusegun, and Abiodun Agbeniyi.

The accused, standing trial before Chief Magistrate P.E Nwaka, are alleged to have engaged in unlawful invasion of TVC Television in Lagos.

They all pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

The magistrate, who ordered that the accused be remanded, adjourned the case till April 6, for a determination of their bail.

The Police prosecuting counsel, CSP Effiong Asuquo, Officer in Charge of Legal Unit, State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 31.

He said that the accused engaged in a riotous invasion of TVC Television station, protesting an alleged rustication of a student.

According to him, the students also invaded the main campus of the University of Lagos, Akoka, and disrupted normal activities in the institution.

The prosecutor told the court that the invasion by the students was simply a ploy to stall the commencement of the institution’s semester examination scheduled to begin on April 3.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of section 168 (1) (d), and section 2 of the Criminal Law, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

Hiddink: I Rejected Leicester

Featured Image

Guus Hiddink has stated he rejected the chance to take over at Leicester, by refusing them indirectly.

The Dutch manager has taken over at Chelsea on two different occasions after the blues sacked their managers. He said he was asked through channels about coaching the foxes.

But he refused to take over and believes they made the right choice of going with Craig Shakespeare.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, the Dutchman said: “To be strictly correct, I didn’t talk directly with Leicester. But you know how the line goes. ‘They think of you…’

“They asked not directly but indirectly, but I said no. If you have decided to sack Ranieri, why don’t you go with your number two guy?

“Shakespeare knows the club, knows the players. Why don’t you go there, you will see what will happen, I said. Happily I was right.

“Liverpool [Shakespeare’s first game in charge] didn’t know what hit them. Within 20 minutes, 2-0. And five days later Leicester won at Hull. The relegation problem was solved in five days.”

Leicester secured their fifth consecutive victory under Shakespeare on Saturday, beating Stoke at home 2-0.

Guardiola: I’m Here To Win Trophies

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola has stated he is more invested in winning trophies than instilling a new philosophy at Manchester City.

The Etihad stadium outfit are out of the champions league and only have the possibility of winning the FA cup and finishing in the top four of the EPL.

However, it is Guardiola’s first season in the premier league and the spaniard insists winning silverware is still paramount.

“I think it would be so arrogant for me to think I came here to change or introduce [a philosophy],” he said. “I am here to win titles and games and then the people will be happy with the way we played.

“I can assure you it was like that from the first day I met the chairman, Txiki [Begiristain], and my press conference here, I am not going to show you how managers are going to win a game, but I assure you the people will at least be proud of what they do.

“After I leave, like at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, people outside will judge me on the job I have done, and the players I worked with every day will say: ‘Okay, Pep helped me to be a better player’, while others will say: ‘Pep did not help me in any way to be a better player’. That is how it happens in all places.”

Konta Wins Miami Open Trophy

Featured Image

Johanna Konta has claimed the biggest title of her career, beating Caroline Wozniacki 6-4 6-3 to win her first Miami Open title.

The British tennis star was the better player throughout the encounter, keeping her nerves when it was most needed.

The victory for Konta will see her rise to seventh on the WTA rankings, her highest position ever.

Konta believes her maturity, on and off court, helped her secure the title.

“I think it was probably a combination of everything, but also a question of maturity,” Konta told wtatennis.com.

“I needed to go through certain life experiences, not just on court, off court as well, to I think make me into the competitor that I am, and also the person off court.

“I think a lot of things go very hand and hand when I it comes to sport. It’s not just a job. It’s your lifestyle. I think you have to grow up in a lot of different areas for it to transfer on court as well.

“I’ve always had the belief of wanting to become a Grand Slam champion, wanting to become the best in the world.

“I think that stays throughout, with every player I imagine, their career. Without that, I don’t think it makes…victories as sweet and I think also the defeats as motivating. I think that stays.”

Cahill: Crystal Palace Loss Is A Little Setback

Featured Image

Cahill is urging hus teammates not to panic after their surprising 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace.

The match started in fine fashion for Chelsea, with Fabregas opening the scoring after just five minutes, but Zaha and Benteke scored in quick succession to end the match.

Tottenham closed the gap between them and Chelsea to seven points, after winning 2-0 against Burnley.

“We are disappointed as we had a chance to chalk another three points off,” Cahill told Match of the Day.

“We have to regroup. It is a little setback but we need to focus on Wednesday. We need to keep calm and go again. The gap is still there. It puts emphasis on Wednesday. It adds a bit more pressure but the boys respond to that.

“They made it difficult. It was a crazy 15 minutes [but] once we settled it was one-way traffic.

“I hate possession stats. It is about putting the ball in the net.”
