Alan Pardew Tried To ‘Tap Up’ Patrick van Aanholt While He Was Taking A Throw In

Featured Image

Crystal Palace full back Patrick van Aanholt claimed that former Eagles manager Alan Pardew tried to tap him up during a match while he was still a Sunderland player.

Patrick Van Aanholt, who joined Palace in a £14million deal from the Stadium of Light in the January transfer window, was admired by Pardew before his dismissal at Selhurst Park.

During a match involving Pardew’s Palace and Sunderland, van Aanholt claims the former manager made an audacious attempt to lure him south, with the pair in close proximity on the touchline.

‘I was playing for Sunderland when we were at home to Palace,’ the former Chelsea defender began recalling the incident which took place in the second half of the 2014-15 season.

‘Just as I was getting ready to take a throw-in Alan Pardew came along the touchline towards me and said: “Come and play for my team next year.”‘

‘In the middle of a game, eh? I found that really funny. Then I told him: “OK, no problem.”‘

Sam Allardyce Quits Manchester United To Join Bury For Free

Featured Image

Sam Allardyce has quit Manchester United to join up with fellow north west side Bury.

This isn’t  former England manager and present Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce, but instead his completely unrelated namesake who has made the move to further his career.

Bury announced the signing of the young Sam Allardyce this week after the player ended his association with United – a team who he had played for since the age of eight.

Speaking to Bury’s official website, Allardyce noted how the club could be primed for him to accelerate his career and development as a footballer.

‘With there being no Under 23’s team, it means that the opportunity is there to get noticed earlier, as some Under 23’s enter a team and never get seen again,’ the youngster said.

‘I want to keep playing in my position and constantly improve.

‘Hopefully I will impress early, and get constant starts for the youth team with an opportunity to train with the first-team,’ Allardyce added.

Zinedine Zidane Understands James Rodriguez Anger At Being Substituited

Featured Image

Zinedine Zidane insists nothing should be read into James Rodriguez’s angry reaction at being substituted in Real Madrid’s 4-2 win at Leganes.

The Colombian scored Real’s opener in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale, but the 25-year-old – who has been heavily linked with a move away from Madrid – was frustrated at being hauled off by Zidane in the 61st minute.

“It’s to be expected that he gets angry because they all went to play a full game,” Zidane told the club’s website. “These things happen and what I take away with me is his performance because he played very well.

“I haven’t got anything against James, quite the opposite. I bring him off a lot, but that’s because he’s an attacking player and he works very hard. There’s nothing more to it.I try to do what’s good for the team. He’s important to me, to the team and to everyone.”

Sam Allardyce Defends Arsenal Wenger: “He Should Feel No Obligation To Tell Arsenal Supporters His Future”

Featured Image

Sam Allardyce believes Arsene Wenger should feel no obligation to tell Arsenal supporters what his future holds.

Allardyce’s Crystal Palace welcome the Gunners to Selhurst Park on Monday amid growing tension between the Arsenal boss and supporters following another unsuccessful Premier League title challenge.

Asked if Wenger should be making his plans for next season known, Allardyce said: “Not really, that’s a conversation that the club has, not Arsene himself. The whole club decides if you’re going to make an announcement or not, not just the manager.”

On the protests against the Frenchman, Allardyce said: “It’s the norm…today. It’s what you have to accept across the board as a manager, that there will be criticism thrown your way at some stage if people think you’re not achieving what you should achieve.

“We’ve all had it but we’re tough enough to deal with it. He’s been an outstanding manager in this league for 20-odd years so I’m sure he will be fighting with his players to put things right.

“And they had a very good victory last night, 3-0, which showed they bounced back and as always it will be a hugely tough game for us because of the quality of their players.”

Arsene Wenger Admits Mesut Ozil Has Struggled To Deal With Bayern Munich Heavy Loss

Featured Image

Mesut Ozil struggled mentally after Arsenal were dumped out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich, according to Arsene Wenger.

Gary Neville questioned Ozil’s work rate and suggested he could be holding out “for a £270,000 a week contract” before committing himself to the Emirates.

However, Ozil grabbed the headlines on Wednesday night after a sparkling display with the opening goal – his first in nearly four months – in the 3-0 defeat of West Ham. He also assisted Theo Walcott’s strike.

“I feel that he is back physically. He is focused. I know him quite well,” said Wenger reflecting on Ozil’s struggles that followed the 10-2 aggregate defeat by Bayern on March 7.

“He was hit hard by us going out in the Champions League – it took some time for him to recovery mentally.”

Arsenal desperately need this upturn in form to continue as they pursue their 21st consecutive top-four Premier League finish, something Wenger is adamant his side can still achieve.

“It’s possible of course,” Wenger added. “We have a game in hand on City. We have players back from injuries. We had quite a strong bench tonight. So overall, we have done it before in more difficult conditions. But we have to try to do it again.”

His confidence is based on the belief that Arsenal have been playing more freely over the past two matches.

“You could see that even if the result against City wasn’t what we wanted, it had a positive impact on the morale of the team,” he said. “In the second half our technical superiority made the difference.”

Singer/Songwriter emaé returns with personal new song ‘Better’

Independent Scottish singer-songwriter emaé (pronounced em-may) is a feel good mix of soul-pop, with gospel undertones. Her debut single ‘Something Beautiful’ was released in 2015 and received critical acclaim all over the world. MTV The Wrap Up praised the record that ‘oozes confidence, honesty and a relatability that is rare for newcomers’; Soulbounce USA noting its ‘luscious vocals and sweet harmonies’. To accompany the track, emaé decided to release a cinematic music video, directed by Lee Jones (Jessie J, Tinie Tempah, Rita Ora) and shot by Sam Pearce (Kate Nash, Rizzle Kicks) which was featured on VEVO’s front page.

The following year, London-based artist emaé unveiled her acoustic EP ‘Imperfect Words’ (premiered by Afropunk) and a second single ‘Know You’. These two releases allowed her to keep the momentum going with support from BBC 6 Music and an opportunity to open for US artist Adia Victoria in the UK. Last year, emaé was nominated by Gospel Touch Music for the Critics Choice Awards. She also wrote and performed the soundtrack for motion picture ‘The Sunrise StoryTeller’ created by 18 year old, Canadian filmaker Kasha Slavner, to be premiered at the United Nations in March 2017.

2017 started on a high note for emaé as she has been hand picked as ‘One To Watch in 2017’ by MOBO Awards. emaé is excited to share ‘Better’ the first single off her highly anticipated debut album set to release later this year. Written and composed by emaé, ‘Better’ is a very personal song which showcases her honest, life-weathered songwriting. The raw emotion captured in her vocal performance showing us just one side of the artistry to be expected in her upcoming album. She explains “Better is the song for right now, it 100% reflects where I’ve been the last year and also where I’m going. It’s a song of resilience, confidence and certainty. It’s a song I’m extremely proud of.”

The soulful singer-songwriter teamed up with audio and mastering engineers Mark Allaway (Newton Faulkner, Jess Glynn) and Alex Balzama for the making of this song. The video was shot and edited by Joe Almond (Sofar Sounds). Better is now available on all digital and streaming platforms.

Senate To Halt, Probe FRSC Speed Limiting Device Implementation

Featured Image

The Senate on Thursday resolved to halt the plan by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to implement the use of speed limiting device by vehicles in the country.

Consequently, it mandated its Committee on Federal Character to investigate the plan to ensure that it did not add to the hardship currently being experienced by Nigerians.

This followed a point of order raised by Sen. Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi) during plenary.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the FRSC had in 2016 advised vehicle owners to install speed limiting device in their vehicles.

The device is electro-mechanic and restrains a vehicle from moving on more than the stipulated speed limit, and its enforcement is to check speeding believed to be a major cause of vehicles accidents.

Melaye said, “there is a proposal by the Federal Road Safety Corps to begin implementation of speed limiting device and this device is to be sold to individuals by the commission.

“This policy will not go down with the masses of this country.

“This is not the time to bring economic hardship on the already traumatised people in this country.

“In every civilised part of the world, it is the responsibility of road safety authorities or agencies like her to mark speed limits on the road and when you beat this speed, they charge you.

“To ask individuals to purchase speed device from Road Safety is unacceptable and this is even not the time to do it.”

He called on the leadership of the Senate to intervene in the matter and stop the “draconian move”.

In his remarks, President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, referred the matter to the Federal Character Committee to handle and report back urgently.

The 13 students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), who were detained at the Kirikiri prison last week at the behest of the Special Offences Mobile Court, Oshodi have been granted freedom.

The accused persons were detained for protesting against the authorities of the institution, amidst an alleged “riotous invasion” of the university campus and Lagos-based Television Continental, TVC.

The management of TVC had since denied the allegations, saying the students were peaceful in their conduct.

Earlier today, the student arrived the mobile court in Oshodi in company of a police convoy chanting solidarity songs.

After court session, the counsel to the students, Inibihehe Effiong, said the release was subject to Section 211 of the Nigerian constitution.

“The trumped up charges have been struck out and we salute the Lagos State Government for this,” he said.

While speaking to newsmen, one of the students, Aina Tomi, said that the students would institute a legal suit against the Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, Premium Times reports.

“We will institute legal action against the commissioner in the next couple of days,” he said.

The management of UNILAG had earlier disowned the students saying some of them had been rusticated from the school while others were not students of the institution.

Tragedy As Naval Commander Shoots Self Dead In Lagos

Featured Image

It was tragedy on Wednesday within the Naval community in Lagos as the Fleet Commander, Western Naval Command, Apapa, Lagos State, Rear Admiral Daniel Ikoli, was found dead at his Apapa residence.

Rear Admiral Daniel Ikoli,

Rear Admiral Daniel Ikoli

It was gathered that the Naval Commander shot himself dead.

Ikoli, who was Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT and later appointed into the presidential committee on the probe of arms deal, was said to have been found in a pool of his blood while a service pistol, expended and live ammunition, were recovered at the scene by police detectives who visited the residence.

It was understood that before the incident, he lived with his house boy while his wife resides in Abuja and his children schooling abroad.

Speaking on the incident, a naval aide to the deceased said his house boy claimed he heard gunshot from Ikoli’s room and took cover.

The aide said: “The boy said he heard gunshot and when he did, he took cover. His wife is in Abuja and his children school abroad. His orderly and Naval Assistant (NA) usually go after dropping him.

“The bullet hit him on the chest. Three bullets were seen in his room. No one can really tell what happened but the position he was seen suggests he might have been scared of something or someone.

“He was a nice and intelligent officer. He was the one who spearheaded the renovations at BEECROFT when he was Commander. It’s a sad news really.”

A source close to Okoli said that he had been managing depression and an ailment for some time, adding that it was not impossible that he committed suicide.

The source said, “He was Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT, and was later appointed into the presidential committee that probed the arms deal. He was very lively and intelligent.

“But for some time now, he had been battling an illness and had lost weight. He had also become reserved lately, which was unlike him. He usually complained about the high dollar rate and unavailability of foreign exchange because he had children studying abroad.

“He left the office on Tuesday afternoon after complaining that he was not feeling fine. I was shocked this morning when I learnt he shot himself.”

Confirming the incident, the command’s information officer, Lieutenant Commander Chinwe Umar, said the police have been invited for investigation.

She said: “In the early hours of Wednesday, April 5, gunshots were heard in the vicinity where Rear Admiral Teikumo Daniel Ikoli resides in Apapa.

“When his room was opened, he was found dead. Police have been invited and investigation is ongoing. When the situation is clearer, an update would be given.”

Film Review: Okafor’s Law

Featured Image

In 2016, eight Nollywood films were selected to participate in the Lagos City to City spotlight, a non-competitive program of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) that seeks to uncover new film vistas from around the world. With Green White Green’s Abba T. Makama choosing to pursue less traditional methods of screening his film, Okafor’s Law written, produced and directed by Omoni Oboli,- she also stars in it,-  is the last of the TIFF eight to secure a wide release.

The wait for Okafor’s Law has been dramatic, marked heavily by controversy; something that is becoming somewhat of a trend with films directed by Omoni Oboli. A Canadian based writer, Jude Idada accused Ms Oboli of stealing his copyright and promptly directed his complaints to the courts. He also raised similar complaints about her directorial debut, 2014’s Being Mrs Elliot.

A Federal High court granted Oboli some reprieve on Thursday, 30, March, vacating an interim order earlier restraining the premiere and release of the film and Okafor’s Law opened the next day.

A romantic comedy on gender relations, Okafor’s Law is based on some belief of unclear origin, one that bases its conclusion on primal psychologic instincts; that a man who has been intimate with a woman and performed a good job of it, is always likely to score again later in life, regardless of the circumstances that enforced their parting of ways.

The premise might seem flimsy but such are the tropes that the romantic comedy genre has been forced to fall back on as fresher angles are continuously being sought for the same boy meets girl narratives.

Chuks Okafor aka Terminator, (Blossom Chukwujekwu) in keeping with his Don Juan profile, is a wealthy, bored bachelor who hedges a bet with his unconvinced friends, Chuks the Baptist (Gabriel Afolayan, inconsistent), and Chuks the Fox (Ken Erics, unimpressive). Okafor stakes some of his shares in the business they run together on his being able to prove that Okafor’s Law exists, by tracking three former conquests of his and bedding them (again) within three weeks.

The origin of this law isn’t quite verified but Oboli provides some historical context as narrated by her leading man. It makes little sense but a suspension of belief is required to appreciate the entirety of Okafor’s Law.

Blossom Chukwujekwu, with his masculine good looks and smooth charm makes for a suitable rom-com lead. He puts in decent enough work as the rascally Casanova, but he is constantly undercut by Oboli’s script that has nothing genuinely interesting for him to do beyond dishing out half-baked seduction lines. In more capable hands, his Okafor could have been a star-making turn, and a reference point for future actors cast in similar roles.

But the problem isn’t necessarily his. It’s all Omoni Oboli. As the star, writer, producer and director, the strengths and weaknesses must be placed squarely on her table. She uses her clout to gather the likes of Yinka Edwards and Pat Nebo for the lighting and production design but for some reason, the work of these masters barely register.

Oboli’s directing is rote and she just goes through the motions of her screenplay without bringing any flourish or interesting angles. Everything begins with the story and audiences would have been better rewarded if the legal drama surrounding Okafor’s Law was for a more worthy screenplay. This one holds no cinematic urgency and could have been written by a second year Theatre Arts student, for a departmental stage production.

Heavy on dialogue with mildly interesting twists, plus some genuine comic moments, the scenes lack punch and go on for lengthy moments only to lead nowhere fast. The entire film barely has the element of suspense and demands little in terms of engagement from the audience. beyond the visuals provided by pretty actors and prettier sets.

As the first of Okafor’s potential conquests, Oboli’s slightly unhinged sister Ejiro who turned to God after a humiliating encounter has a few interesting scenes but it is clear Oboli’s mind is preoccupied on other matters.

Toyin (Aimakhu) Abraham is miscast as an advertising high roller. She speaks in a smoky, seductive tone but isn’t nearly believable as a PR guru. Abraham is merely reciting her lines most of the time and the generic PR lingo she is fed, fails to convince of her authenticity. She enters familiar territory though when she lets it rip in her preferred Yoruba language.

Ufuoma McDermott is promising as the mysterious billionaire wife, Ify and is the only character on display that seems like she could interest the audience beyond the film’s running time. Speaking of, at almost two hours long, Okafor’s Law definitely overstays its welcome and would have benefited from the services of an editor with an eye on precision.

Sound issues crop up in scenes that play like the voices were dubbed atop the pictures, the plot occasionally dances on the edge and the actors could have been better handled to elicit more believable performances.

None can deny Oboli’s tenacity but hard work and grit alone never did a decent movie make. Taking on all of these responsibilities may be admirable but for everyone’s sake (including hers,) perhaps Ms Oboli needs to shed some weight.

Plenty weight actually.

Court Directs EFCC To Unfreeze Patience Jonathan’s $5.9m Account

Featured Image

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to unfreeze the account of Patience Jonathan, wife of former President, which contains $5,842,316.66 at  Skye bank Plc..

The directive of the court followed an application argued by her lawyer Mr. Adedayo Adedipe SAN – who led about seven other lawyers.

It would be recalled that the Federal high court sitting in Lagos had in December last year ordered the freezing of multiple accounts by the EFCC, suspected to be owned by Dame Patience Jonathan.

The court while giving reasons as to why it ordered the accounts frozen said it was on the ground that the money is suspected to be proceeds of crime.

However, today, during hearing, Adedipe urged the court to unfreeze the account on the ground that Patience Jonathan was not a party in the suit leading to the order made by the court.

Mr Adedipe while citing judicial authorities contended that the order was an abuse of court process as the court has no jurisdiction to make an order against a party that is not a party in a suit filed before the court.

The EFCC which initiated the suit leading to the order made by the court freezing the account did not file any response to the application filed to discharge the order.

The trial judge Justice Mojisola Olatoregun upheld the submission of Mr. Adedipe and discharged the order freezing the account.

Daniel Sturridge Making Liverpool Comeback At ‘Perfect’ Time – Jurgen Klopp

Featured Image

Jurgen Klopp believes it is the “perfect moment” for Daniel Sturridge to return to the Liverpool squad.

Sturridge, 27, last appeared for Liverpool in February and has spent nearly two months on the sidelines with a viral infection and then a hip problem.

“I saw Daniel’s rehab training and he looked really fresh and sharp,” Klopp is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo. “On Monday he was team training. It was second day recovery for all the boys and he was part of that. He looked good. He’s very optimistic about the situation.

“I said before training to Daniel that it was the perfect moment for him to be coming back. It’s good news for us, it’s not just bad news with Sadio being out.”

It has been a frustrating season for Sturridge, who has made just five starts so far in the 2016-17 Premier League campaign.

For the majority of the season, Klopp has favoured a front three of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Mane, leaving Sturridge and fellow striker Divock Origi with bit-part roles to play.

“Managing players is always a challenge,” Klopp added. “My job is difficult. I can’t say all the time what players want to hear. But it’s not more of a challenge with Daniel than with other players.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t use him in this second part of the season as much as we needed. But now he’s back and everything is good for me. He will be very important.”
