Washington Rejected AJ Spar Offer, To Learn From Klitschko

Featured Image

Gerald Washington has claimed he rejected the chance to join Anthony Joshua’s training camp, opting for Klitschko’s instead.

The battle between Joshua and Klitschko is drawing ever close, as the April 29 fight at Wembley is mere weeks away.

Both boxers have been surrounding themselves with the best boxers for sparring partners, with Washington joining Klitschko’s camp.

“They asked me to come, and I would love to work with [Joshua] also, but I wanted to be around someone who has had longevity like the long-time champion,” Washington exclusively told Sky Sports.

“I want to gain that experience. I want to be around a guy that has worked with great trainers like Emanuel Steward and Johnathon Banks.

“It’s great to be around such a great champion like Wladimir, who’s been doing it for such a long time. You can feel the knowledge that is floating around and I’m trying to absorb as much as I can.

“We have a morning workout, then sparring in the evenings. Wladimir looks very good – he’s fast and mobile, and he’s putting together a great game-plan.

“He’s a great guy – you can see the level of professionalism that he brings to the table. It’s refreshing to see a classy guy. I always learn from guys who have been there before, and have walked that path.

“I have a lot of things to learn, and that’s why this training camp with Klitschko is so vital to me. I can get the experience behind-the-scenes and continue to grow. I want to go to other camps, and be around guys that can help me grow, because I’ve got a taste for it.”

Tuchel Unhappy With Dortmund-Monaco Rescheduling After Bomb Attack

Featured Image

Thomas Tuchel, Borussia Dortmund manager has criticised UEFA for rescheduling their match against Monaco less than 24 hours after a tragic incident.

The Dortmund team bus was struck by three explosions as the bus left the hotel for the Signal Iduna Park, with Marc Bartra sustaining a wrist injury.

Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke stated the club would not bow to terrorism, but it doesn’t seem to be a sentiment Tuchel shares.

“There are players who can easily deal with what’s happened and others who worry more – very mixed feelings,” Tuchel said.

“We wished we would have wished for more time to deal with what happened but someone in Switzerland decided we have to play.

“It’s not very fair. What happened yesterday happened to us as people. Every player has the right to start with a strange feeling.

“We’ve been left feeling a bit helpless by the decision. But professionals find solutions to problems. We are strong enough.”

West Ham United Linked With Move For Sunderland’s Lamine Kone

Featured Image

West Ham are considering putting in a bid for Sunderland centre-half Lamine Kone, according to the London Evening Standard.

Kone has reportedly been on the Hammers’ radar for some time and may look to sign him if the Black Cats are relegated.

The 28-year-old joined Sunderland in the summer of 2016.

Sunderland were determined to keep him, who was such a key factor in their revival last season after joining from Lorient in January 2016. Selling him this season would have sent a defeatist message through the club, even if Kone’s performances this term have not really justified their stance to the extent they would have hoped.

West Ham have been particular concerned by the defensive frailties that had sucked the club back into relegation trouble recently after their climb into the top half of the table.

Last Saturday’s win over relegation rivals Swansea moved West Ham eight points clear of the drop zone and the club are confident that they can now start planning for next season in the top flight.

Also on their shopping list is a right-back, with Manchester City duo Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna both under consideration.

“Huge Offer For Wilfried Zaha Could Be Impossible To Reject”- Sam Allardyce

Featured Image

Sam Allardyce concedes it would be impossible for Crystal Palace to reject huge summer bids for Wilfried Zaha.

Speaking to the London Evening Standard, Allardyce said: “Wilf, us and the clubs that want him will decide his future in the end. There is always a point where it may be impossible to turn down what is offered. That is realistic.

“Hopefully, we do not get to that point for a long time but it may be a possibility. Because it is a rare talent. There should be another 20 or 30 young Wilfried Zahas across the country.

“However, we do not develop enough so foreign players have to come in and take their places.”

Palace would likely demand a big fee for Zaha, who is under contract until 2020, and the price could put Tottenham off. Last summer, Parish dismissed Spurs’ £12million bid as “ridiculous”.

Asked how much Zaha is worth in the current market, Allardyce said: “Who knows? Now you have got competition. The Premier League has got bigger competition than ever before. It is called China. Now the Chinese are looking at the younger ones and are paying bigger money than the Premier League has ever paid out to entice them to go to China.

Didier Drogba Drops Hint About Romelu Lukaku’s Future

Featured Image

Didier Drogba says Chelsea fans should not rule out seeing Romelu Lukaku back at Stamford Bridge next season.

And the former Chelsea striker says he knows what Lukaku – who he calls his “little brother” from their time together in west London – will do this summer.

The Everton striker, who has scored 24 Premier League goals this season, has been heavily linked with a move away from Goodison Park and recently said he would not sign a new deal – although his agent, Mino Raiola had previously said a deal was ‘99.9 per cent’ done.

“If he comes to Chelsea it will be great for the club,” he told Gary Cotterill.

“He knows the house already and I think he wants to prove he can be successful here, he didn’t get the chance to do it.

“Chelsea is his club since he was young, so why not? He wants to be the best. He’s really working hard to become the best.”

The Toffees still have realistic hopes of claiming European football for next term and will hope Lukaku can continue to fire in the goals to keep their ambitions on track.

Anti-Corruption War: Presidency Declares ‘Full Support’ For Magu To Remain As Acting EFCC Boss

Featured Image

Nigeria’s Presidency has declared its full support for Ibrahim Magu as the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), adding that it would not cower to demands for his removal by the senate.

The ‘very clear’ hint from the presidency is coming on Tuesday and against the backdrop of calls by the Nigerian senate for Magu to be sacked from that position.

The senate had on two occasions rejected the President’s request to screen and confirm Magu as Chairman of the anti-graft agency citing implicating reports by the Department of State Security Service.

According to a report from the security service, Magu was deemed unfit for the job.

However, the Presidency has refused to cower to the tune of the Senate.

During an interview with newsmen on Tuesday night, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, averred that he and President Buhari are ‘totally’ confident in Magu as the head of Nigeria’s anti-graft agency.

“I’m fully in support of Magu as the EFCC Chairman just as the president is…” Osinbajo said.

Answering a question on the Senate rejection of Magu, the vice president said “it is up to the Senate to make their judgement. If our candidate is rejected, …, we can represent our candidate.”

The Senate, while rejecting Mr. Magu the second time had said it would no longer consider him if his name is sent again by the president.

However, the VP gave the clearest indication yet that Mr. Magu may remain in acting capacity as EFCC Chairman for the duration of the Buhari administration.

“I fully agree with Mr. (Femi) Falana that there was no need in the first place to have presented Mr. Magu for confirmation,” he said making reference to the Section 171 of the constitution.

The vice president also described the State Security Service’ action of writing a report against a presidential nominee (Mr. Magu) to the Senate as “a robust expression of our institutions of government.”

“He (President Buhari) has not interfered with what the DSS want to say,” Osinbajo said.

This disclosure was made by the Managing Director (MD), NRC, Fidet Okhiria, in a chat with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

The MD also used the medium to urge those trespassing on the NRC land to start packing their belongings, to avoid their property being destroyed by bulldozers.

He said: “Those that are due for compensation will be compensated because it is part of the contract.

“But those who encroached on the land have to leave the premises as soon as possible because the constructions will begin on Friday.

“We intentionally did not give permits to so many people because we know that one day, the land will be required.

“So we have already mapped out those places we need to remove and they are aware. We have told them to remove their valuables before the bulldozers start work.’’

NAFDAC Destroys Counterfeit Drugs Worth N29 Billion

Featured Image

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has said it had destroyed counterfeit drugs worth N29 billion in the last three years.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday, Abubakar Jimoh, Director, Special Duties, gave the figure, even as he explained that in December 2016 alone, fake drugs worth N9.6 billion were destroyed in Port Harcourt, Rivers, in an operation carried out in conjunction with the Nigeria Customs Service.

He described counterfeit drugs as worthless and valueless, adding that the N29 billion is what would have been made from sales, if the drugs had succeeded in flooding the Nigerian markets.

“Counterfeit drugs, as far as we are concerned have no value; but those engaged in this dastardly act would have made N29 billion in the last three years,” he said.

Mr. Jimoh, who is also NAFDAC’s spokesman, said that seven persons were convicted in the last two years, for various drug offences.

He said that a lady, among the fake drugs merchants, bagged seven years imprisonment without an option of fine.

The director said that the conviction was the highest punishment handed to any counterfeiter in recent time.

The spokesman said that the organisation currently has not less than 50 drug offences cases pending in various courts of law across the country.

The official expressed the hope that the courts would convict more dealers of fake drugs to serve as deterrent to others engaged in the nefarious business.

He said the agency was determined to get rid of counterfeit drugs and other fake products from the country and urged Nigerians to be vigilant and serve as `NAFDAC agents’ in exposing the perpetrators.

Sevilla To Make Bid For Las Palmas Defender Mauricio Lemos

Featured Image

Sevilla could launch a summer move for reported Barcelona target Mauricio Lemos, according to Radio Sevilla.

The Europa League champions are said to be admirers of the centre-back, who has been a key player for La Liga club Las Palmas this season.

The centre-back has a €30m (£25.5m) release clause, but Sevilla are unlikely to pay that amount and will instead look to negotiate a lower fee.

Lemos has scored three free-kicks in La Liga this season, more than any other player in Spain’s top flight.

Lemos joined the Canary Islands side last summer from Russian club Rubin Kazan and has made an instant impression in La Liga.

His assured performances have helped Las Palmas to mid-table safety in the Spanish top tier, with the club 12th after 29 matches.

They are on 35 points, 13 above the relegation places.

Torino Keen To Extend Joe Hart’s Loan Deal Until Next Season

Serie A club Torino have asked Manchester City if they can extend Joe Hart‘s loan into next season, according to Tuttosport.

City are reportedly set to reply in the next few weeks. The Italian daily says Hart, who is currently on a season-long loan at the club, has expressed his desire to remain in Turin beyond the current campaign.

The City fan favourite, who turns 30 in a week’s time, has become a big hit at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, despite the Granata conceding more goals than every team besides the bottom two

City will prefer a permanent sale, with Pep Guardiola not viewing Hart as part of his plans, but Torino will not be able to finance such a deal and are hoping to receive the goalkeeper for a second year on loan.

Hart has two years left on his £120,000-a-week City contract and will see his value depreciate sharply in a year’s time if no buyer is found this summer
