Five Die In Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash

Featured Image

At least five persons, including a toddler, have died in an accident involving a truck and an 18-seater commercial bus at Makun area on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Thursday.

The incident was confirmed by the Public Relations Officer, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency in Ogun, Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, while speaking to journalists in Abeokuta.

Akinbiyi said both vehicles were heading to Lagos when the accident occurred at New Makun City area on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

He said the deceased included one female and four males who were inside the commercial bus.

The PRO attributed the crash to heavy down pour coupled with over speeding of the commercial Mazda bus with registration number LSD 454 XT which rammed into the truck.

Mr. Akinbiyi said the bus had no functional wiper for its windscreen during rainfall, which blurred the vision of the driver resulting in the accident.

He said the‎ impact of the collision resulted in the death of the five victims in the bus, who were traveling alongside other occupants.

He said the accident consequently led to a gridlock which affected Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun, who was travelling to Lagos.

The road traffic official said the governor ordered his security details to commence rescue operations and those injured were rushed to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

Alonso Knows Mourinho Will Be Seeking Revenge At Old Trafford

Featured Image

Marcos Alonso is quite certain former Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho will be out for blood, when Chelsea visit Old Trafford.

Mourinho has been at Stamford Bridge twice this season, losing in the premier league and exiting the FA Cup.

However, he’ll have the chance to avenge both defeats at Old Trafford, when Chelsea comes visiting on Sunday.

Alonso told Standard Sport: “It will be tougher this time around. They are one of the best teams in England, no doubt. It will be a very hard game, even more so after losing twice against us.

“They will give even more to try and beat us. We will have to do the same or more than before to get another win.

“They’re playing at Anderlecht tonight but they have a big squad, full of good players.

“They will be hard to beat, no matter who they pick or the fact they’re playing in the Europa League just three days before. We will have to be ready.”

WAEC Approves New Examination For Private Candidates As From 2018

Featured Image

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has said it had approved the commencement of an additional diet in its examination for the private candidates every year.

Announcing the approval at a news conference in Lagos on Thursday, the council’s Registrar, Iyi Uwadiae, said the move was in connection with the growing concerns among stakeholders over what they perceived as discrimination or denial of equal opportunity to private candidates.

“WAEC conducts its West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) twice every year, in May/June for school candidates and in November/December for private candidates.

“The council also conducts various national examinations in the member countries except Nigeria.

“Now, the school candidates who wish to retake the examination usually have the opportunity of doing so with the private candidates’ examination.

“With this development, there has been a wave of agitation, criticisms and appeal across the sub-region for the council to ameliorate the agony of long waiting experience by private candidates who desire another attempt at WASSCE,’’ he said.

Mr. Uwadiae added that the situation was often cited as being responsible for the level of desperation sometimes exhibited by the perpetrators of malpractice at the private candidates’ examination centres.

“The council, after painstakingly considering all ramifications of the matter, has finally given approval for the national offices to begin the conduct of one additional diet each year of WASSCE for private candidates.’’

NAN quoted him as saying that the modalities for the take-off of the examination were already being worked out and the examination could begin in February/March of 2018.

“I must be quick to point out that though the council has given the nod, the conduct of the additional diet may not take off in all the member countries immediately or at the same time.

“But let me also assure stakeholders in Nigeria that the Nigeria national office has indicated its willingness and readiness to blaze the trail by making the examination available to Nigerians in 2018.

“Details of the scheduled dates, available subjects, location of centres and their information would be provided by the Head of Nigeria national office at the appropriate time,’’ Uwadiae said.

Mesut Ozil Tells Arsenal Supporters To Show Arsene Wenger More Respect

Featured Image

Mesut Ozil has called for Arsenal supporters to show Arsene Wenger more respect and said he was a major factor in his decision to leave Real Madrid and join the club.

He said: “As players you can’t decide who manages the club. I’ve always said he [Arsene Wenger] was the most important factor in me coming here.

“He’s been here for 20 years, he’s given a lot to the club and I think he deserves respect for what he’s achieved.”

Arsenal’s struggles have been summed up by Ozil’s own form of late. He scored and provided an assist in a rare positive for the club in last week’s 3-0 win over West Ham. But the 28-year-old has too often been on the periphery of big games, leading to criticism from pundits and a section of Arsenal fans.

“I don’t really pay too much attention to what the experts say,” Ozil said of any of his critics. “It comes down to maybe not seeing all of my statistics, maybe my style sometimes does make it look like I’m not 100 percent there, giving my absolute everything.

“But that is my body language, that is the way I have always been. That is the way I am and I won’t change that. I always give 100 percent, I always fight for everything.

“Of course, in some stages you can be annoyed when things go wrong on the pitch. You can express frustration but there is no player, especially not me, who will go out and give 90 percent and not give everything or think ‘we are going to lose today, what is the point, I will hold myself back.’

“That doesn’t happen at all so the important thing is not to let your head go down.”

Lucas Alcaraz Appointed Head Coach Of Algeria National Team

Featured Image

Lucas Alcaraz has been appointed Algeria coach – three days after being sacked by La Liga strugglers Granada.

The Algerian football federation confirmed the 50-year-old’s appointment on its website on Thursday, saying he will take office in the coming days.

He replaces Belgian Georges Leekens, who resigned after Algeria’s group-stage exit from the African Nations Cup earlier this year.

Alcaraz’s third spell as Granada coach ended on Monday following a 3-1 weekend loss to Valencia, with former Arsenal captain Tony Adams taking over the reins at Los Carmenes.

Granada-born Alcaraz has enjoyed a two-decade-long managerial career in Spain with the likes of Almeria, Recreativo, Cordoba and Levante, but has never coached outside his homeland and represents a left-field choice by the Algerian federation.

The North African heavyweights had been linked with moves for both ex-Middlesbrough coach Aitor Karanka and another Spaniard, Joaquin Caparros, who had been the frontrunner for the post.

Alcaraz, who has been appointed by new FAF chief Khereddine Zetchi, will hope to end a period of instability for Algeria, who have now had four full-time coaches in just over a year

Dybala Lauds Allegri, After Signing Extension

Featured Image

Paulo Dybala has praised Massimiliano Allegri for the role he played in his development after extending his stay at Juventus.

Dybala extended his contract till 2022 on Tuesday, joining Juventus from Palermo in 2015 and has established himself as one of the leading strikers in Europe.

The Argentina international scored a brace in the 3-0 win over Barcelona and plays in a freer role behind Gonzalo Higuain.

“This week is filled with very strong feelings and emotions, I’m very happy for what I’ve done so far,” Dybala, who has ended speculation linking him with Barca and Real Madrid by extending his contract, told Juve’s official website.

“When I signed the first contract [was my best moment at Juventus], because I knew I would have become part of this club. Being part of Juventus, of what this team represents in the world, that was an unforgettable emotion.

“Allegri initially fielded me in a very cautious way, he knew exactly what he was doing. He allowed me enough time to understand and get to know this club better.

“I really like my current position, I already played that way when I was a youngster in Argentina, it gives more freedom and more options.”

Arsenal Prepared To Make Alexis Sanchez Highest Paid Footballer In EPL

Featured Image

Arsenal are willing to make Alexis Sanchez the highest-paid player in the Premier League in a bid to break his contract stalemate, according to the Evening Standard.

With his current contract set to expire in 2018, the Chile international’s future at the Emirates is up in the air with both parties yet to agree terms on a new deal.

The on-going contract situation has led to Sanchez being linked with moves to Chelsea and Manchester City in the Premier League, as well as some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

But the Evening Standard claim the Gunners are set to table a bumper new deal, worth £300,000-a-week, to convince Sanchez to stay where he is.

Should the Gunners fail in their attempts, a £50million fee will be demanded for the striker, who is out of contract at the end of next season.

Arsenal fear losing their best players to an English rival, and so will resort to the last-ditch offer.

Mesut Ozil, 28, who earns £140,000-a-week, will also reportedly be presented with a similar deal.

Mesut Ozil: Champions League Spot More Important Than My Future At Arsenal

Featured Image

Mesut Ozil has hit back at his critics, maintaining he always gives 100 per cent for Arsenal, but insists now is not the time to talk to about a new contract…

Arsenal are sixth in the Premier League following a run of two wins in eight games, and Ozil told Sky Sports that improving their standing must be the immediate priority.

“I think at the moment it would be wrong to really think about that, to go ahead and look at that,” he said when asked about his future and that of Wenger.

“At the moment, the team we’re having a more difficult spell and at this stage I’m not important and no other player is important. What’s important is the club.

“We’ve got aims that we want to meet this season. There’s still lots for us to play for. We want to qualify desperately for the Champions League for next season as well.

“So we’ll talk in the summer and we’ll clear things then but for the moment, all that’s important is Arsenal and not me and not any other player — it’s just the club.

“What we need to do is fight, to do what we can. It’s not just about the boss or the fans — it’s about the whole club and playing for the whole club.”

Report: Faouzi Ghoulam Agrees To Join Atletico Madrid

Manchester City and Arsenal target Faouzi Ghoulam has decided to join Atletico Madrid, reports Tuttosport.

The Algeria left-back, who is out of contract at Napoli next year, is not expected to renew his deal at the Serie A club.

As such, Napoli are planning to cash in on the defender this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer – and he has no shortage of suitors.

City and Arsenal are reportedly on his trail, but according toTuttosport, the player has decided to head to join Atletico.

The Spanish capital club could snap him up for a fee of around €20m, but only if their FIFA-imposed transfer sanction is lifted this summer.

The defender has made 33 appearances for Napoli this season, providing seven assists along the way.

Simone Zaza Reveals He Suffered At West Ham

Featured Image

Simone Zaza admits he suffered during his loan stint at West Ham earlier this season.

The Italy striker, who failed to find the back of the net in eight league outings for the Hammers, has relaunched his career at Valencia.

The La Liga club snapped him up on loan in January before announcing earlier this week they have secured his services on a permanent basis.

Zaza is delighted to have committed his future to Valencia, even more so after his travails in London earlier this season.

“The renewal is very good news, I always thought about staying here,” he told Valencia’s official radio station. “Now it’s official. I am happy.

“Valencia were the team that wanted me the most. I knew the history of Valencia and when they said there was the possibility of coming here it made me very happy.

“I am not a phenomenon, nor the best in the world. What’s the most important thing is that the people know that I am going to give everything.

“Now more than at Juventus or at Sassuolo or at other teams because after the negative period at West Ham I suffered a lot and I will never forget it.”

“No Option For Crystal Palace To Sign Mamadou Sakho Permanently” -Jurgen Klopp

Featured Image

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Crystal Palace do not have an option to sign Mamadou Sakho at the end of his loan spell.

The 27-year-old France international has rekindled his career at Selhurst Park, where he is on loan from Liverpool until the end of the season.

Impressed with his performances, Palace are understood to be keen to make Sakho’s deal permanent, but Klopp insists there is no deal in place.

“There is no clause in the loan contract,” he is quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

Whether the development could see Sakho return to Anfield this summer remains to be seen.

Reports have suggested that Sam Allardyce is keen to finalise a move for the Liverpol star and the south London club could have first option on making the move a permanent one at the end of the season.

Allardyce hinted after the 3-0 win over the Gunners on Monday night that he would look into the prospect of taking him to Selhurst Park.

Report: Torino Reject Chelsea’s £51m Bid For Andrea Belotti

Featured Image

Chelsea have tabled a €60m (£50.9m) offer for Torino sensation Andrea Belotti, according to Tuttosport.

The Serie A club are understood to have rejected the Premier League leaders’ approach, citing the 23-year-old’s €100m (£84.9m) release clause.

Tuttosport add that Torino will not consider anything less than the buy-out clause for Andrea Belotti, who is under contract at the club until 2021.

Belotti has become one of the hottest young talents in Europe this season, having scored 26 goals in 30 games for the Granata

Antonio Conte is targeting two players up front this summer with Everton’s Romelu Lukaku already expected to move to Stamford Bridge

Torino chairman Urbano Cairo has since claimed the buyout clause is too low and said last month: “If I were to do the clause now, I would put it at €150m.”

Cairo has suggested this week that Belotti could leave next summer. “I think he needs to consolidate and have another great season and then go to the World Cup in really high spirits, and then we will see,” he said.

“I would keep him here for life, but I’m obliged to let him go if somebody from abroad offers €100m. Then it would be down to him — he could even say no, but I have a splendid relationship with Andrea and I think we can still go a long way together.”

Bartra To Spend Up To Four Weeks Out

Featured Image

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Marc Bartra, who sustained an injury in the bomb attack that struck the team bus, will miss up to four weeks of action.

The German coach stated the events that occurred on Tuesday is the worst event of his life, as explosions rocked the team bus en route to their home match against Monaco.

Shrapnel hit Marc Bartra on the wrist, needing surgery on a broken bone in his wrist.

And the Dortmund boss, whose side face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday, said “it looks like Marc Bartra will return to the team in four weeks. He’d like to play now already.”

Tuchel says he and his team still remains shocked by the incident.

He said: “I just can speak for myself, I just can tell you that today is my worst day, ever.

“This morning and till now and speaking again to the players this and for myself feels like the worst day.

“While it was happening it was kind of.. ‘ok’ – nobody knew what was going on and you just have to do that you have to do and the next day was a bit like walking through a cloud.

“It was not so clear and I think this is a process that will accompany us through the next days and weeks that we have to accept that it comes up and goes down and it comes in waves and sometimes you get very emotional about it and sometimes you can feel this moment very realistic and sometimes it’s far away.”

Harry Kane was nominated for the award and the young player of the year award, which Alli was also nominated for.

Ross Barkley Shows Black Eye And Bruised Face For The First Time Since ‘Unprovoked Attack’ In Liverpool

Featured Image

Ross Barkley was pictured for the first time since he was the victim of an ‘unprovoked attack’ in a Liverpool bar on Sunday night.

The Everton midfielder showed bruising on his face as he left training at the club’s Finch Farm base.

The 23-year-old’s face looked battered and bruised as he was seen leaving Everton’s training ground after arriving at the facility a few hours earlier on Wednesday.

Barkley was punched to the ground by a man in a Liverpool club over the weekend following the Toffees’ 4-2 victory over Leicester City.

He was not knocked out and was free to return to training following the incident.

Barkley returned to full training with the Blues on the Monday after the incident, and was examined by club medics, who must now follow strict guidelines relating to head injuries.

But he is free to play against the Clarets.

A statement from Barkley’s lawyer said on Monday: ‘We can confirm that Ross was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a stranger who approached him on Sunday evening.’

According to the club, Barkley did not suffer any concussion from the incident after being checked out by club medical staff, and he will not be disciplined as club sources say he was not in breach of any rules and was under no curfew.

Merseyside Police are looking into the incident, and Ross Barkley will want to move on from the skirmish as quickly as possible by continuing his good form on the pitch when Everton host Sean Dyche’s side at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Beware! Continuous Use Of Antibiotics Could Increase Risk Of Bowel Cancer

Featured Image

A research is suggesting that people who take antibiotics for a long time – in their early to midlife – are more likely to develop growths on the bowel which can be a precursor to cancer (Bowel Cancer).

Researchers discovered that the pills are linked to a heightened risk of abnormal growths in the colon and rectum – known as polyps or colorectal tumours – adenomas – which precede the development of most cases of bowel cancer.

WHO Lists 12 Deadly Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria That Pose ‘The Greatest’ Threat To Human Health

Bowel polyps are small growths on the inner lining of the large bowel or rectum. They are not usually cancerous but some may turn into cancer unless they are removed.

More findings by these experts showed that the type and diversity of bacteria in the gut, referred to as the ‘microbiome,’ may have a key role in the development of cancer.

The research, led by a team from Harvard medical school, found that those who had taken antibiotics for two months or more were 36% more likely to be diagnosed with bowel polyps than those who had not taken them for any extended period when they were in their 20s and 30s.

The authors added that women who had taken antibiotics for two months or more in their 40s and 50s were even more likely to be diagnosed with an adenoma decades later.

But the study does not look at how many polyps went on to become cancerous.

The authors say their research cannot prove that antibiotics lead to the development of cancer and acknowledge that the bacteria which the drugs are deployed to treat might also play an important role.

But they say there is a “plausible biological explanation” for the patterns seen.

Writing in the journal they said: “Antibiotics fundamentally alter the gut microbiome, by curbing the diversity and number of bacteria, and reducing the resistance to hostile bugs.”

“This might all have a crucial role in the development of bowel cancer, added to which the bugs that require antibiotics may induce inflammation, which is a known risk for the development of bowel cancer.”

They added: “The findings if confirmed by other studies, suggest the potential need to limit the use of antibiotics and sources of inflammation that may drive tumour formation.”

“There is increasing evidence that our microbiota are important in regulating our immune responses and many aspects of our normal functions, including digesting food and producing essential metabolites and vitamins,” said Dr Sheena Cruickshank, British Society for Immunology spokesperson, and Senior Lecturer in Immunology, University of Manchester.

“Thus, anything that disturbs our gut bacteria, such as changes in diet, inflammation or antibiotic use, may have an impact on our health.

“This study’s findings imply that any risk is very slight and also quite variable.

“Whilst the data adds to our growing knowledge of the importance of the gut bacteria to our health, I would be concerned about advising people to avoid using antibiotics.

“Antibiotics are crucial medicines for treating bacterial infections and, if prescribed and used appropriately, can be life-saving.”

The research was published in the journal Gut.

Celtic Could Make Cut-price Bid For Sunderland’s Fabio Borini

Featured Image

Celtic have been alerted to the potential cut-price availability of Sunderland’s striker Fabio Borini, the Daily Record reports today.

A deal could be on the cards if the Black Cats are relegated from the Premier League, with Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers having worked with the Italian at Chelsea, Swansea and Liverpool.

It is understood he could leave for around half of the £8million Sunderland paid for him in August 2015.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has worked with the 26-year-old at Chelsea, Swansea and Liverpool.

Borini has struggled for goals this season but says that is due to boss Davie Moyes asking him to fill several different positions.

He said: “When we had injuries I have been told to play on the left, the right, in the middle, behind the striker, and even left-back when it was needed.”

Rodgers is looking for a striker and a wide player to cover the return of Patrick Roberts to Man City after his loan spell and Borini can fill both positions

“Today, Thomas is with the Ligue 1 leaders,” Edwige told French outletOuest France.”There is no set plan for him. We are of the belief that logically the plan is playing time, which is what he has at Monaco.

“Sometimes there are financial parameters that do not fit into that, but I think that the aim is to do another year or two with Monaco. His ambition, his aim, is certainly to go a little further. In this situation, the player will have a say, but he is not always the only one to decide.”

Chelsea and Manchester City have been alerted by the 21-year-old’s displays and they both want to bring him to England this summer.

Lemar has also attracted interest from the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Real Madrid.

Nigeria Re-Elected To Chair UN Peacekeeping Committee For The 45th Time

Nigeria has been re-elected, for the 45th time, to chair the UN special committee on peacekeeping operations, regarded as UN’s most strategic committee.

The UN correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria was re-elected in spite of some hesitations by some countries to let Nigeria continue to lead the most critical committee.

Nigeria has chaired the special committee on peacekeeping operations from 1972 till date.

Over the years, some member states have covertly expressed their reservations over the rare honour accorded to Nigeria, especially in view of its declining participation in UN peacekeeping operations.

The election was conducted by the under-secretary-general for the department of peacekeeping operations, Herve Ladsous and the chief de cabinet of the UN secretary-general, Maria Viotti.

Nigeria was elected by acclamation.

Others elected are Argentina, first vice chair; Canada, second vice chair; Japan, third vice chair; Poland, fourth vice chair; and Egypt, rapporteur.

NAN reports that Nigeria is the 14th largest troops contributing nation to UN peacekeeping operations and eighth in Africa, according to the last data published by the UN peacekeeping department.

The data showed that Nigeria contributed 2,170 peacekeeping personnel in 2016, made up of 403 policemen, 46 military experts and 1, 721 troops, out of which 232 were females.

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres, after the election, congratulated Nigeria on its re-election as well as other members of the committee.

“I offer best wishes to all the members of the Committee as you identify a way forward at this critical time for international peace and security,” he said.

“Peacekeeping is a partnership in which Member States deploy their political will, financial resources, military and police capabilities.

“Above all, Member States put the lives of their citizens on the line to transform conflict into sustainable peace,” Guterres, represented by Viotti, said.

“As the nature of conflict changes and we face new challenges such as asymmetric threats, transnational crime and the expanding reach of terrorists and extremists, the structures and practices designed even 10 years ago are not always keeping pace.

“The United Nations has to be more nimble, pragmatic and flexible in its ability to plan, launch and manage a more diverse range of operations,” the secretary-general added.

He urged the committee to consider carefully the recommendation of the 2015 peace and security review, echoed in security council resolution 2242, to surpass the current three per cent participation of women peacekeepers.
