It was a black Thursday for football loving fans in Calabar as over 30 people – with majority believed to be supporters of Manchester United Football Club – were feared dead at a football viewing centre in Cross River State.
Channels TV reports that the supporters were electrocuted by a high tension cable that reportedly fell on them.
It is understood that the football fans assembled at the centre to watch the second leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-final match between Manchester United and Anderlecht on satellite television.
It was gathered that the live electricity cable broke from its mooring and fell on the viewers.
An eyewitness, who said he was the first to run out of the viewing centre, told the Television station that the victims died as a result of a contact between the live cable and the roof of the viewing centre.
The exact official figure of casualties still cannot be ascertained but around 30 people are reported to have been killed in the incident.
Electricity authorities said it is illegal to erect any building around areas with high tension cables.
Meanwhile, Manchester United won the match 3-2 aggregate, with Marcus Rashford netting the winner in the 107th minute.
