FIFA To Launch Video Refereeing At 2018 World Cup

Featured Image

FIFA on Wednesday declared that video assistant referees will be used at 2018 World Cup in Russia for the first time.

“We will use video refereeing at the 2018 World Cup because we’ve had nothing but positive results so far,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said at a congress of the South American Football Confederation in Santiago, Chile.

“In 2017, when everyone in the stadium or at home can see within seconds if the referee made a mistake, we can’t have a situation where the only one who can’t see it is the referee.”

The video assistant referee (VAR) technology can only review incidents relating to goals, red cards, mistaken identities and penalties.

Video assistance was introduced to support referees with “game-changing” decisions for the first time in a Fifa competition at the Club World Cup in Japan in December.

The four areas covered by the video replay official were goals, penalties, red cards and cases of mistaken identity.

The system has been tested in several domestic leagues, with Australia’s A-League becoming the first top-tier competition to employ the technology earlier this month.

It could also be used in English football as soon as August, bringing forward the start of a planned trial by several months.

The Football Association had initially said the technology could be tried in the FA Cup in January 2018, but it might now begin in the EFL Cup first round.

EFCC To Introduce Anti-Corruption Course To Nigerian Universities

Featured Image

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), says the commission will soon launch its anti-corruption programme in universities across the country.

Mr Ibrahim Magu, the Acting Chairman, said this in Abuja on Wednesday while speaking to newsmen on the sideline of the opening ceremony of a capacity building workshop on the use of beneficial ownership information and the recovery of assets in Africa.

He said that the anti-corruption programme would be similar to that of “Women Against Corruption”.

“We are already talking with the universities; we are looking at starting with University of Lagos and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) where we will launch the programme.

“There is something on ground to also reach out to the universities as student’s union leaders have disturbed me over issues in the sector.

“The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) leadership visited me last week and this was part of their complaints.

“We assured them that we are going to join them and launch the anti-corruption programme and we need them too because we are protecting their future,“ he said.

On stolen assets, Magu said that government was working with global partners to fast-track the return of stolen assets abroad.

He said that the commission was planning to clamp down on tax evaders as part of plans to bring succour to the economy.

“We are going to collaborate with FIRS and set up a unit that will exclusively deal with tax fraud, tax evasion and related offences. We are going to see that we work on this seriously.

“We have just discussed it with the FIRS chairman; we will give the operatives a special training to operate very well,“ Magu said.

Mauricio Pochettino Dismissses Xavi’s Claim That Manchester City Could Sign Dele Alli

Featured Image

Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham have no intention of selling Dele Alli to Manchester City despite Xavi’s claims Pep Guardiola is interested in the player.

“He’s in a period when he loves to talk, he’s in Doha [playing for Al Sadd] and listen, he was Barcelona player, he’s my enemy,” the manager said.

“He tried to destroy our focus to win because he hates me because he’s Barcelona – player, fans, you know. I know him [Xavi] very well, I played against him a lot and when I was a manager [at Espanyol].”

Pochettino told a story from the playing careers of both men to illustrate his distrust of Xavi, when he won a penalty which Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored to give Barcelona a 1-0 win over his Espanyol side in a match in December 2009.

“Yesterday there was Thierry [Henry] here and we remembered the game that he [Xavi] cheated the referee,” said Pochettino.

“He fell down, it wasn’t a penalty, but Ibrahimovic scored for Barcelona and they won the game.

“The marking man was Raul Baena, Xavi fell down and said ‘penalty’, they gave a penalty.

“After, in the video, it was very funny because no one touched him and everyone in the media was saying no, no trust me – it was a penalty. Come on. It goes from lie to lie to lie.

“He is working for Manchester City, maybe? He wants to help Guardiola and [Vincent] Kompany.”

I’m Not Worth My €100 million Release Clause- Andrea Belotti

Featured Image

Torino striker Andrea Belotti has admitted he may not be worth the €100m release clause in his contract as Manchester United continue to be linked with a summer move.

“I honestly do not feel that I am worth so much,” he told Italian TV show Tika Taka. “In football, however, the figures have increased dramatically, and the values of the players have gone through the roof.”

The transfer of Paul Pogba from Juventus to Manchester United for €105m last summer is currently the world-record transfer fee, while the sale of Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli to Juventus last July set a new Serie A record at €90m.

Belotti says he does not feel he belongs in a category with such players or any of the former Serie A greats yet.

“Hernan Crespo did far more than I have — I’ve achieved nothing yet,” Belotti said. “[Andriy] Shevchenko was also a champion both on and off the field and he was my idol. I was struck by how he was able to score goals in so many different ways.”

Sam Allardyce Insists Wilfried Zaha Is Worth Up To £40m

Featured Image

Wilfried Zaha is worth at least £40m in the summer transfer market,Crystal Palace boss Sam Allardyce has insisted.

Zaha, who has had an excellent season for the Eagles despite their battle against relegation, was a target for Tottenham last summer and is expected to interest Spurs again, as well as a number of other clubs.

“Personally, in today’s market, absolutely (he’s worth £40m). I just hope no one bids it,” he said.

“The problem we have at Crystal Palace, and every football club, is that it’s like the housing market. ‘What a fantastic price I’ve got for my house, I’ve bought it for this price and sold it for that’. But then you have to go into the same market. Stay with what you’ve got, man.

“People say ‘look what they got for that player so let’s add another £15-million on top of it’. You’re dicing in a dangerous area unless you are clever enough and you can keep it quiet, which is virtually impossible, to do your business before you sell.

“And that’s nearly impossible with agents ringing the press and telling you what’s happening. It’s not always the truth that they tell you but you don’t know it’s not the truth so you print it.

“As far as I know, Wilfried’s contract has a considerable amount of time on it. The summer will bring with it whatever it brings whether that is us negotiating a new contract with him and he wants to stay, or whether some outrageous bid comes along.

Chelsea Give Newcastle Deadline To Agree Permanent Deal For Christian Atsu

Featured Image

Chelsea will give Newcastle one week after the end of the season to agree a permanent deal for Christian Atsu, according to ESPN

The Ghana international has failed to make an impact at Stamford Bridge but has enjoyed a more successful loan spell with the Magpies and a fee of around £6.5m is being touted.

Christian Atsu has impressed when called upon this season, scoring four goals and assisting three more in his 30 appearances in the Championship for Newcastle, but only 13 appearances coming as a starter.

Atsu has spent the last four seasons out on loan after joining Chelsea from Porto in the summer of 2013.

The 25-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at Chelsea and the club are considering offering him a new deal, but sources have said that Atsu is keen to be playing regular first-team football at this stage of his career.

A number of other clubs are monitoring Atsu’s situation and are ready to move for him if Newcastle fail to take up their option in time to sign the winger.

Christian Eriksen Could Play For Barcelona – Frank de Boer

Featured Image

Christian Eriksen is ready to play for Barcelona, according to his former Ajax coach and Barca defender Frank de Boer.

De Boer, who managed Eriksen at Ajax, said: “I think he’s really been making a name for himself, at Ajax at first, and then at Tottenham at the highest level.

“I also think he’s ready for a next level. He has everything a Barcelona player needs. He has overview, work ethic, left and right, he’s pretty complete.

“He’s just not really a ball winner, but other people have to do that. He runs the highest distances, which isn’t really the most important thing. But if you run for a lot of metres and you do that in the highest tempo, then it will deliver a result.”

In September, Eriksen signed a new four-year deal, tying him to Spurs until 2020.

Gus Poyet Wants John Terry To Play In China

Featured Image

John Terry could move to China this summer, according to his former Chelsea team-mate Gus Poyet who is now manager of Shanghai Shenhua.

“It is a great opportunity for him and for all the teams here [in China], including us,” he told Talksport: “The latest change of the quantity of foreigners on the pitch stops some clubs from bringing in defenders, but we are talking about a special one.

“It is a great possibility that China will be one of the possible situations for John Terry in the future. It is a very difficult decision whether to stay in England or go abroad. I would like him not to play in the Premier League for another club – maybe I’m a little bit selfish.”

Nigeria Will Be Out Of Recession By Third Quarter – CBN Governor

Featured Image

Following the current efforts and policies initiated by the Federal Government to revive the country’s economy, Nigeria should be out of recession by the third quarter of this year, an official has said.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, made this known after a meeting with the leadership of the Senate in Abuja on Tuesday.

CBN Suspends Cashless Policy, Directs Banks To Refund Customers

Emefiele further said that the apex bank would continue with its intervention in the foreign exchange market, adding that efforts by the apex bank so far had been yielding positive results.

The CBN Boss also revealed that the country had started to see a gradual fall in the prices of commodities, indicating a reduction in the rate of inflation.

His words: “We are very much optimistic that by the end of the second quarter, or latest the third quarter, we should be out of recession that we are in right now.”

In attendance at the closed door meeting were the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; and Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, Rafiu Ibrahim.

Emefiele, while briefing journalists after the meeting, said discussions were held between the apex bank and the legislature on the current state of the economy.

He said, “Actually, the Senate President invited us to come and brief the Senate leadership in a closed session and to provide some updates on the foreign exchange markets. You would have observed that in the last two months, the central bank has been involved in some form of intensive intervention in the foreign exchange market and this has fortunately resulted in a downward trend in the parallel market price of foreign exchange, from as high as N525 to a dollar to as low as N370.

Ex-Governor Of Niger Babangida Aliyu Remanded In Prison

Featured Image

Justice Mohammed Mayaki of the Niger State High Court on Tuesday directed that the former Governor of Niger State, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, be remanded in Minna prison till May 3, 2017, when the application for his bail would be ruled upon.

The former governor is standing trial over alleged N4.568 billion fraud and abuse of office.

Aliyu was docked alongside his former Chief of Staff, Umar Nasko, on a six -count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust, punishable under Section 97 and 312 of the Penal Code by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The defendants were accused of conspiring and dishonestly converting to personal use funds amounting to N4.568 billion, belonging to the Niger State Government.

According to the anti graft agency, the funds are for ecological projects, as well as proceeds realised from the sale of 16 per cent shares of the state in the North-South Power Company.

During trial on Tuesday, the counsel to the EFCC, Mr. Gbolahan Latona, and the lead counsel to both Aliyu and Nasko, Mr. Ayodele Oladeji (SAN), had engaged in marathon legal arguments over the application for and against bail and whether the accused persons should be kept in EFCC custody or Minna prison.

The lead counsel had argued that their defendants were always available when invited by the EFCC, adding that there was no evidence they would jump bail.

After much deliberation, Justice Mayaki then ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the matter till May 3 for ruling on the bail application.

Mourinho: Manchester Derby More Than Me And Guardiola

Featured Image

The focus in the upcoming Manchester derby is not on Jose Mourinho or Pep Guardiola, but on the team and the the Portuguese is for this.

The rival managers shared a toxic rivalry when they were in Spain, with Mourinho coaching Real Madrid and Guardiola coaching Barcelona.

The same relationship was expected this season, with the Portuguese in charge at United and the Spaniard at City.

Both teams started the srasonseason quite well and City won the first match 2-1, but the story is not the same, as they’re both fighting for a spot in Europe.

A win for United will see Mourinho’s men move to fourth on the table and City dropping to fifth.

“I see that now is the correct approach and the previous one wasn’t,” he told Sky Sports, reflecting upon early season hype.

“This is about the clubs, this is about the teams, this is about the positions at the end of the season.

“This is not about myself and Guardiola, so I think now is the correct approach.”

Hazard: I’m Not The Right Captain For Chelsea

Featured Image

Belgium captain Eden Hazard, does not think he is a suitable replacement for John Terry as Chelsea’s captain.

John Terry is leaving Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, leaving the role of team captain vacant.

And while Gary Cahill has worn the armband for the majority of the season, Hazard has also been touted as captain of the blues.

“I think we have some players who can be more than a captain in this team,” Hazard told Sky Sports.

“When I talk to you at the national team, I do not know if I am a good captain, but I am a captain on the pitch.

“Off the pitch I do not like to talk a lot. In England I think the captain has to talk and make people ready for the games. I am not this kind of guy, I can talk with my feet but it is not my job to talk to everyone.

“I think JT does this, Gary [Cahill], [Cesar] Azpilicueta and even Cesc. They deserve to be captain.”

Ancelotti Unimpressed With Ribery’s Performances

Carlo Ancelotti has hinted at dropping Franck Ribery for Douglas Costa in the DFB-Pokal semifinal against Borussia Dortmund, due to the winger’s failure to impress him.

The former France international started the season quite well and impressed in the win over Dortmund earlier in the season, but h’s suffered a dip in form.

Ribery was poor in the match against Madrid and Mainz and was replaced quite early in both matches. His fitness was rumoured to be the problem, but Ancelotti has debunked such talks.

“Ribery is fit and can play on Wednesday,” Ancelotti stated at a news conference.

“He was out of the team the other day because he had not been playing well.

“Douglas Costa had some knee problems before, but he is doing better now. He is in a good shape and an option for the game against Dortmund.”
