Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard will be in charge of the U-18 next season, the Anfield club has confirmed.

The 36-year-old retired November of last year and embarked on the next stage of his career by joining the academy at Liverpool.

Gerrard was in a floating role at Kirkby since February and having impressed, has been given his first team.

“I have really enjoyed my time at the Academy so far and feel I have learnt a lot from the coaching staff here already,” Gerrard said.

“After speaking to Alex [Inglethorpe], we feel as though it is time for me to step up and manage my own team.

“Neil has done a fantastic job with the U18s, so I hope I can continue where he left off, encouraging and nurturing players into the U23s and eventually the first-team setup.”

On the decision to give Gerrard the responsibility of overseeing a team, Academy director Inglethorpe added: “Steven has brought invaluable experience and knowledge to us since joining us, passing on some fantastic advice and guidance to our younger players.

“We both feel now is the perfect time for him to take the next step in his coaching career and manage his own team.

“The U18 players can undoubtedly only learn from having someone like Steven in charge and we have no doubt that he will prove to be a huge success in the position.”

James Rodriguez: Madrid Has Five Cup Finals

Featured Image

James Rodriguez believes Real Madrid have five cup final left in the league, as they are in a race to pip Barcelona to the title.

The Colombia international scored a brace on the 6-2 win over Deportivo La Coruna on Wednesday.

Barca and Madrid are locked on 78 points atop the table, though the latter have a match in hand in their pursuit of a first La Liga trophy since 2012.

“I feel happy and really satisfied,” James said. “We played very well, with high intensity and desire. What we did out there was positive.

“We have five cup final games in La Liga, which we have to go into with hunger, and we also have to think about the Champions League.

“Regardless of who plays, the team always play well. When we have such opportunities, we have to do well as we did.”

Saraki, El-Rufai Worked Against My Emergence As Buhari’s Running Mate – Tinubu

Featured Image

A National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has accused Senate President Bukola Saraki and the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, of being responsible for his failure to run in the 2015 presidential election as running mate to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr. Tinubu alleged that the duo – and other stalwarts of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who defected to the APC in the build-up to the 2015 elections – worked separately but for one purpose, influencing Buhari not to pick him as the would-be Vice-President.

Obasanjo Says Jonathan Used ‘Boko Haram Insurgency To Turn Nigeria To His ATM’

The APC leader’s comments were contained in a book titled ‘Against the Run of Play,’ written by the Chairman, Editorial Board of ThisDay Newspaper, Olusegun Adeniyi.

In the book, the former governor accused both politicians of playing the religious card – telling Buhari a Muslim-Muslim ticket would be unpopular.

His words: “What they (Saraki and others from the PDP) did behind my back was wrong. We always do things as a group. By the time they joined, we were already too far ahead in our processes but we accommodated them.

“We agreed to take their state structures and subsume them into the part and they all had their opportunity to nominate the candidates of their choices for different political offices.

“But they went behind to instigate Buhari and some other people in the party against me on the pretext of religion. That was not right. They were canvassing arguments that the Christians in the North would not vote for a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“Nasir el-Rufai was also selling the same argument within the CPC (the defunct Congress for Progressive Change) because at that point, he still wanted to have Pastor Bakare brought in as Buhari’s running mate.”

Obasanjo Says Jonathan Used ‘Boko Haram Insurgency To Turn Nigeria To His ATM’

Featured Image

Former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo has stated why he rejected the re-election of immediate past president, Mr. Goodluck Jonathan, in the 2015 presidential election.

According to him, “Jonathan and his people turned Boko Haram into an industry for making money. Rather than seek for a solution, Boko Haram became an ATM machine for taking money out of the treasury.”

This and many more are contained in a book, Against the Run of Play, written by Mr. Segun Adeniyi, Chairman of the Editorial Board of ThisDay Newspapers.

The book, an account of what happened in the 2015 presidential election, is due for public presentation in Lagos on Friday, April 28, 2017.

“This morning, on my way from Abeokuta by road, I was listening to the radio. I heard that the Jonathan administration said that they are going to set up an agency for pipeline protection. Now, what are the police there for? What are all the security agencies doing? This is another chop-chop,” Mr. Obasanjo said in Abuja during a thanksgiving ceremony to mark the 50th birthday of Dr.  Oby Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education.

Mr. Obasanjo, according to the author, claimed to have nothing personal against Mr. Jonathan, explaining that his disagreement with him was based on certain principles on which he was not prepared to compromise.

“My decision was based on what would be for the good of Nigeria and since I didn’t consider Jonathan god enough, I told him to his face. What would I be afraid of?” asked Obasanjo.

He sustained his attack with details of how he thought the Jonathan administration was not interested in accountability, noting that its handling of the Boko Haram insurgency indicated that if allowed to continue in power, Mr. Jonathan could fatally damage the country.

“Jonathan and his people turned Boko Haram into an industry for making money. Rather than seek for solution, Boko Haram became an ATM machine for taking money out of the treasury. Take the issue of the Chibok tragedy. If he had acted within the first 48 hours, they would have found most of the girls. The CAN (Christian Association of Nigeria) Chairman of the local chapter in Chibok was here to see me and he explained how they were helpless with no reaction from the authorities for several days,” the book quoted Mr. Obasanjo as saying.

Winning With Whistle-blowing In A Recession – Zainab Suleiman Okino

That not all Nigerians accept corruption as a way of life and that the majority even abhors it is not in doubt; this has been demonstrated in the acceptability and efficacy of the whistle-blowers’ policy recently introduced by the federal government. Many are prepared to collaborate with the government to reduce corruption to the barest minimum, and even expose their ogas and relations engaged in corrupt practices, especially in lieu of the financial rewards attached to such exposés.

This article was written by Zainab Suleiman Okino. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Buoyed by the success of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in recovering looted funds with the help of the new policy, the FG is considering expanding its scope to deal with the illegal possession of arms and ammunition. Arms proliferation has added a frightening dimension to the country’s security challenges, as Nigeria is known as a destination for illicit arms.

Here Are 16 Things You Should Know About The Whistleblowing Programme | Submit Tip On Corruption Here

The whistle blowers’ policy was conceptualised by the Ministry of Finance to encourage the populace to report stolen or looted funds kept outside the banking system. Since the government began the implementation of the TSA and BVN, there has been no comfort zone for those who emptied the treasury, enriched themselves and rendered the country broke. Now, the federal government wants to replicate and extend the same to those in the illegal possession of arms for nefarious purposes.

One cannot blame the federal government; the APC-led administration has been in dire straits since it took over the mantle of leadership in 2015. The foreign reserves had been depleted considerably by the previous government and country’s stock of foreign exchange, depending on oil receipts for replenishment had falling to a very low level due to the massive plunge in oil price at the international markets, besides the pipeline vandalism and disturbances attendant upon the restiveness in the Niger-Delta region, largely resulting from the activities of the Niger-Delta Avengers. With this myriad of problems, the nation’s economy came to near comatose. An ingenious way of tackling the the various problems with the economy – particularly driven by corruption – became needed, hence the birth of the whistle bowers’ policy.

Originally, the skeptical public who had endured the government’s lack-lustre performance in fulfilling its campaign promises did not consider the novel policy capable of any success. However, the big break came with the EFCC’s discovery of looted monies (or alleged gifts) hidden in a decrepit building in a run down location in the Sabo Tasha suburb of Kaduna State, which was allegedly owned by the former Group Managing Director of NNPC. In quick succession, other monies were also found at the Kaduna airport and a market in Lagos, with the biggest of them located in a flat in a luxury highrise on Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, where over N13 billion was recovered.

Eager to shore up its sagging image and loss of popularity, the federal government is latching onto the workability of that process to expand the frontiers of the policy to include reining in on illegal weapons. The National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd) is said to have initiated a template for the discovery and recovery of illegal arms circulating illicitly in the country. According to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, Monguno’s approach would focus on gun control.

The mechanism, according to them, would also help to eradicate and prevent the illegal ownership of small arms and light weapons, which criminals maximise in terrorising or getting even with presumed enemies without recourse to the due process of litigation. Ditto with politicians who harbour arms for election-day violence, and who equally arm their thugs with weapons to harass their opponents.

Meanwhile, arms are commonplace because our borders are porous and the provision of the law on them are either not sufficient, archaic or weak. The 1959 firearms act is yet to be amended despite our practise of civil rule in the past more than 17 years and being in the fourth democratic republic.

By far, this is about the most successful policy ever initiated by this government. On the economic front, the administration has failed woefully. In conjunction with the central bank, the federal government’s economic policy has been a resounding failure; it has only succeeded in pauperising Nigerians, as most families are unable to meet their basic needs. The costs of food have risen astronomically without a concomitant rise in citizens’ personal finances.

The government has been unable to manage its success after winning the 2015 election. Although Boko Haram was fought to a standstill, its vestiges still remain. Only last week the terrorist group sacked an army battalion and killed several soldiers and officers, not to talk of their attack on soft targets, through teenage suicide bombing. The party in power is in disarray. Instead of a cohesive party working in sync for the good of the people, what we see is a conclave of aggrieved members carving their own niche for the advancement of their interests.

The whistle blowing policy on illegal arms and weapons may be explosive and daunting. Although there is apprehension regarding whether it will work or not, in my own opinion, it is worth trying and it will work if government has the will to implement it, and is transparent about its operation.

The technical details that will go into the planning of the policy, how it would work, who will pay the whistle blower and the training of security personnel to handle such sensitive matters are not difficult to fix in the interest of the nation, if the government is determined to do it and the legal framework is clearly spelt out, such as the protection for the whistle blower and monetary inducement. The policy should be all encompassing without prejudice to political affiliation, status or ethnic consideration.

Police Hunts Officer Who Threatened To “Kill 200 People If Buhari Dies”

Featured Image

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has said it has launched a manhunt for a police officer, who threatened to “kill 200 persons if ailing President Muhammadu dies.”

The NPF also said that it has commenced investigation into the content of his post on social media, with a view to identifying the policeman and taking necessary actions.

On Tuesday, the riot police officer, Inusa Saidu Biu, from Biu, a local government area in Southern Borno State, had taken to Facebook, alleging that Buhari had earlier been poisoned but was saved by God.

He further claimed that some persons – he tagged as enemies of the President – were orchestrating his (Buhari) death, describing the 74-year-old president as a cat with nine lives.

Biu then rained curses on the so called enemies and threatened to take 200 lives if Buhari died from the illness.

He wrote, “After they poisoned him, God did not let him die; Buhari, the cat with nine lives. Now they want him to resign so that they would continue to steal our ‘yam’ (treasury). No way; your enemies will die like mosquitoes before you, including those who are commenting negatively. Shege ya buro uba, Zamu ci uwaku. If Buhari dies, I promise to kill 200 people.”

The post, which had been deleted from Biu’s timeline, stirred outrage and backlashes as commentators called for his arrest and prosecution, noting that the post could incite crisis in the country.

In the wake of the incident, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Moshood Jimoh, has revealed that the police headquarters was aware of the post.

Jimoh told newsmen that the police has also commenced a search to know whether he was actually a policeman.

He said, “We have seen the post and we are investigating it. Anybody can post anything on the social media. We first need to ascertain if that man is a policeman and the necessary procedure will be taken. A policeman should not make public comment on social issues. We are investigating and will make the findings public very soon.”

Klitschko: My Prediction Is On A USB

Featured Image

A confident Wladimir Klitschko has revealed he has recorded his prediction for the fight against Joshua on a USB stick, which will be sewn into his robe.

Klitschko will wear the robe to the ring for the fight and auction it off after the fight to raise money for his charity foundation.

The successful bidder will only be able to watch the video after the fight and see if the Ukrainian’s prediction was right.

“On this stick, I recorded a video last week I gave my prediction,” Klitschko revealed, holding up the memory stick. “This stick is going to be integrated into my robe.

“Do not ask me, after that fight, what is on the stick. The only person who is going to be able to open it up and watch it is the person who buys this robe, with all the money going to the Klitschko Foundation.”

Real Madrid forward Isco feels he is enjoying the best form of his career, after helping his side to a 6-2 win over Deportivo.

James Rodriguez might havr sckredscored two goals, but it is the performance of the forward that spurred the win.

Isco scored a goal and assisted another in the win , that kept them level on points with Barcelona.

And afterwards, the Spain international revelled: “It could be [my best form], I am very comfortable and with these players everything is a lot easier, I am very happy with how everything went.

“It was a very complete game from all of the team, on a collective and individual level, and this is shown by the scoreline.”

Isco, who played in the absence of rested duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Toni Kroos while Gareth Bale is injured, added: “It is great to have 23 players in a squad who can all start, and you see that when the team gets rotated. The key thing is that whoever plays we don’t see any respite and for the Real Madrid squad is one of the best in the world.

“I feel really happy here and with this group everything comes easy. I’m thrilled with how things are going. Each club has their starting line-up and it is important that when other players step in that they play well. We work hard to make the most of the chances that the boss gives us.”

37-Year-Old Ugandan Woman Sets World Record With 38 Children

Featured Image

A 37-year-old Ugandan woman from Kabimbiri village, Mukono District, outside of Kampala, has set a world record for having 38 children.

The woman, who is simply identified as Mariam Nabatanzi Babirye, had her last baby via Caesarian section in December 2016, after which doctors cut her uterus from inside, Daily Monitor reports.

It is understood that she has had six sets of twins, four sets of triplets, three sets of quadruplets and single births. Ten of these are girls and the rest are boys. The oldest is 23 years old while the youngest is four months.

The online medium said she was married at the age of 12   in 1993, to a man who was 40 years old.

“I did not know I was being married off. People came home and brought things for my father. When time came for them to leave, I thought I was escorting my aunt but when I got there, she gave me away to the man.”

In 1994, when she was 13, Nabatanzi gave birth to twins. Two years later, she gave birth to triplets and a year and seven months after that added a set of quadruplets. This, she says was nothing strange to her because she had seen it before in her lineage.

“My father gave birth to 45 children with different women and these all came in quintuplets, quadruples, twins and triplets,” said the woman, who is called by fellow villagers as Nalongo Muzaala Bana, “the twin mother that produces quadruplets”

Dr Charles Kiggundu, a gynecologist at Mulago Hospital and President of gynaecologists and obstetricians, said it was very possible for Nabatanzi to have taken after her father.

“Her case is genetic predisposition to hyper-ovulate (releasing multiple eggs in one cycle), which significantly increases the chance of having multiples; it is always genetic,” he explained.

The doctor told Nabatanzi that she could not be stopped then because she had a high ovary count which would eventually kill her if she stopped.

“Having these unfertilised eggs accumulate pose not only a threat to destroy the reproductive system but can also make the woman lose her life,” Dr Ahmed Kikomeko from Kawempe General Hospital explained.

“I was advised to keep producing since putting this on hold would mean death. I tried using the Inter Uterine Device (IUD) but I got sick and vomited a lot, to the point of near death. I went into a coma for a month,” she said.

Nigeria To Launch Dredging Of 162km Ajaokuta-Onitsha Waterways On Friday

Featured Image

The Federal Government has said that it will begin the dredging of the Ajaokuta-Onitsha waterways next week.

Speaking on behalf of the federal government, the Nigerian Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, said the government would launch the dredging of the 162 km Ajaokuta-Onitsha waterways on Friday, April 28, in Kogi.

Mr. Amaechi, while speaking to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja, commended the management of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) for the brilliant initiative.

He said the NIWA has asked its dredgers to carry out maintenance dredging on Ajaokuta-Onitsha waterways to ensure smooth navigation of barges and vessels.

“This is a good idea, the NIWA tried to get back our old dredgers to do the dredging by ourselves, not by contract because we do not have money to award contract. Those companies that can use barges can move their freight; it is 162 meters. They can use it to arrive the Ajaokuta ramp for berthing within three months; we just want the waterways to be navigable” he explained.

The minister said dredging of the Ajaokuta-Onitsha waterways would go a long way in transporting freight to the eastern part of the country.

The first phase of the project would include 80 metres radius from the ramp, 250 metres upstream and 50 metres down stream.

Guardiola: I’m Better Than I Was At Barcelona And Bayern

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola says he has learnt a huge lesson in the premier league and he is a better manager despite going trophy less in his first season.

The Spanish manager enjoyed trophy laden spells at both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but will not be lifting any silverware with City.

Guardiola is not shaken by his first barren season , as he is looking to work towards longterm goals.

“I am not a worse manager because I didn’t win the title,” he told Sky Sports.

“I feel as though I’m a better manager than before because I learned a lot and am more experienced. I’ve learned to handle situations better than before.

“Normally when something happens for the first time you know why it is the first time, so for it to happen after nine years is amazing. That is what I learned from that – I tried but I was not able.

“In Spain, there are fantastic teams that are not going to win anything this year but that is going to happen across Europe.

“I am expecting to have a long career as a manager and it will happen again one year.

“I am not at a club who have won a lot of titles like Barcelona, Bayern, Madrid, Inter, Juventus or AC Milan.

“So that’s why you have to discover something new and you have to be better and better to win that amount of titles like United, Chelsea and Liverpool – clubs with more history than Manchester City.

“That is why I decided to come here, it’s been a big lesson for me. That’s why I think about what we have not done well and take the right decision to make be better next season.”
