Tottenham have confirmed they’ll be playing at Wembley, until their new stadium at Northumberland Park is completed.

Tottenham have been playing their European home games at Wembley and as from next season will play all their home games at the national stadium.

Daniel Levy said: “Both on and of the pitch this is an incredibly exciting time in the history of our club.

“The Lane means a huge amount to each and very one of us and we needed to gain greater certainty on the delivery of the new stadium before we made the final decision to commence with the decommissions of our iconic, historic home.

“We shall ensure that we give the Lane a fitting farewell when we play our last match there on May 14.

“Wembley will be our home for a season and then we will return to what will be one of the best stadiums of its kind and the most unique in the world, playing host to NFL games too – a stadium that will be key to our future growth and success.”

Hearn: AJ Is Taking Over Boxing

Featured Image

Eddie Hearn, who promotes Anthony Joshua, believes the boxer will rule the world of boxing if he beats Klitschko.

Joshua will have the chance to add the WBA ‘super’ title to his IBF belt when he faces Klitschko at Wembley on Saturday.

90,000 fans will be in attendance at Wembley to watch the historic fight, which will be televised worldwide.

“He becomes the biggest star in British sport and the biggest star in world boxing,” Hearn told Sky Sports. “It’s early in his career, it’s his 19th fight, so masses of pressure.”

Asked about Joshua’s meteoric rise, Hearn said: “We talk about this 10-year plan, we’re kind of having a legacy fight within the first couple of years. It’s here, the timing is perfect.

“He could sell out any arena, against anyone, but he wants to be remembered for the big fights.

“This opportunity won’t be there forever. You fight Klitschko now, or it never happens. He wants to be in those big fights, he wants to take on the very best.”

Pochettino Only Concerned About Title And Not About Finishing Above Arsenal

Featured Image

Mauricio Pochettino is more concerned about winning the EPL title than finishing above Arsenal.

Spurs play Arsenal on Sunday at White Hart Lane. They sit four points behind Chelsea with just five games left to go.

A win will ensure Tottenham finish above Arsenal for the first time in 22 years, but that is the last thing Pochettino is thinking about, as he would prefer to win the title.

He said: “I understand (the fans want to finish above Arsenal) but I am so honest, and my feeling is now we are so close, only four points, which is massive with only five games to play, but I will be very disappointed if we don’t win the title.

“At that moment I will start to think about all the good things this season and be realistic to analyse the season. But I really don’t think about which position Arsenal are in. My view and focus is to try to win every game and try to win the Premier League.

“For me (finishing above Arsenal) is not a motivation. The motivation for me is to win because it’s a derby and I know what it means to win a derby. My motivation is to try to win some titles with Tottenham, and my players improve every day and show we are better than the opposition.”

Ancelotti: I Still Have The Backing Of Bayern Players

Featured Image

Carlo Ancelotti insists he still has the backing of the senior players and hierarchy of at Bayern Munich, despite their poor run of results.

Bayern Munich lost 3-2 to Dortmund, surrendering a 2-1 lead. The Bavarian outfit have only won one out of seven games in all competitions..

This has led to speculations that the players at Bayern are no longer supportive of Ancelotti’s methods, but he has denied such talks.

“It’s not true. None of the players said they were not happy,” the head coach told a news conference. “I speak every day with the players. They are happy about our plans. This is my philosophy, my style, and I’ll continue like this.

“I think this club is different from the outside. They have supported me and they support me now. They have confidence and trust in my club. There is no problem.

“Rummenigge and [president Uli] Hoeness have a lot of experience in their jobs. They know how to deal with teams and coaches.

“We have to live with the critics, this is absolutely normal. I have to be cool and analyse every single decision.

“We have the title really close and we have to sacrifice to have points and finish the Bundesliga as soon as possible.

“Our job is to get points and win the Bundesliga. When the ball stops, we can discuss next season, what happened this year, and try to do the adjustment to do better next year.”

Baby Found Dead Inside Refuse Sack In Lagos

Featured Image

A baby was found dead on Thursday inside a refuse sack at a dump site near a market in Alagbado, Lagos State.

The dump site is near the African Independent Television (AIT) Road Market.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who witnessed the incident reports that the dead baby rolled down from the sack as the sack was being dumped into a refuse vehicle.

Refuse collectors saw the baby and raised an alarm.

Market men and women gathered at the scene and ‘rained’ curses on the culprit.

A policeman at the scene told NAN that an investigation would be carried out to find out the culprit.

The policeman from the Alagbado Police Station pleaded anonymity.

The dead baby has been deposited at a mortuary by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.

Mrs Omolara Farounbi, the market Iya-oloja (Market Leader), called on traders in the market to be more vigilant.

She said that the perpetrator was able to carry out the act because the traders cleaned up the market and packed refuse for disposal on Friday.

“It was convenient for the person to dump the baby in the sack overnight.

“We have informed the police and called the Lagos State Emergency Maintenance Authority (LASEMA) about the incident,’’ she said.

Lukaku struggled to get first team football at Chelsea and finally left after loan spells at West Brom and current club , Everton.

The Belgium international leads the goalscoring chart of the Premier League with 24 goals, while Costa has 19.

“We must pay great attention [to him]. But it’s always the same. We study the opponents and we try to find the best solution to stop them – for single players and about the team.

“We must pay great attention to Lukaku and the other players. They have a lot of good players, good technique, good finishing.”

Asked whether he would like Lukaku at his disposal, Conte responded: “In my team? As I said before, for me my players are the best in the world. I don’t change my players with other players.”

7,000 Ghanaian Immigrants Set To Deported From US

Featured Image

At least 7,000 Ghanaian immigrants in the United States face deportation for visa-related offences, including staying illegally, over staying their permits, an official said.

The United States ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson, made this disclosure during a meeting with Ghanaian media men, Africanews.com reported.

“In fact about 7000 of them are currently at different stages of the deportation process. And we are not apologetic about that,” Jackson said.

The decision by the authorities of the U.S. is coming hours after the United Kingdom blacklisted three serving legislators of Ghana’s Parliament over visa fraud.

The MPs had left their relatives to live in the UK illegally after travelling with them to the country.

“The British High Commission considers the actions completely unacceptable. In some cases these behaviours may arguably be criminal in nature,” the British High Commission noted.

In 2016, the United States deported 108 Ghanaian immigrants for reasons including drug-related offences, staying illegally, over staying their permits and other crimes.

They were returned to the Kotoka International Airport in November.

The deportees refused to disembark from the plane in protest of alleged inhumane treatment including shackling before and during the journey.

It took the intervention of Ghanaian security and immigration officials to convince them to disembark after over an hour.

U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to deport illegal immigrants and immigrants with criminal records as part of his immigration policy, the roll-out of which is being challenged in the court.

In March, the United Kingdom had deported 23 Nigerians for various immigration related offences in the country.

Earlier this month, German government deported to Nigeria an alleged Islamic extremist, an ISIS suspect, deemed dangerous by authorities.

Boko Haram: Suicide Bomber Kills Five Soldiers, Wounds 40 In Northeast Nigeria

Featured Image

No less than five soldiers have been killed with 40 others wounded after a Boko Haram jihadist rammed an explosives-laden pick-up truck into a military convoy in northeast Nigeria.

Security sources, who spoke to AFP on Friday, said the bomber, believed to be loyal to factional leader Abu Mus’ab Al-Barnawi, targeted the convoy, which was conducting “clearance operations” between Yobe and Borno states.

“At about 1100 hours (1000 GMT) on Thursday, a suicide bomber believed to be a Boko Haram terrorist riding in a van loaded with explosives rammed into a military convoy at Manguzum village,” a military source said.

“We lost five soldiers in the incident and more than 40 sustained various degrees of injuries,” added the officer, who asked to remain anonymous because he was not authorised to speak about the incident.

The convoy was heading to the garrison town of Damboa, which is some 90 kilometres (55 miles) from the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, at the time.

A second military source said the troops were heading into Borno when the jihadist crashed his vehicle into a tank.

“The armoured tank was seriously damaged and the operation slowed down,” he added.

There has been a spate of deadly attacks on military targets in recent months, as troops fight to end the eight-year insurgency, which has left at least 20,000 dead in Nigeria alone.

Film Review: Omugwo

Featured Image

When the most influential filmmaker of a generation decides to join forces with the continent’s most important platform for small screen content to make a major feature film, it is hard not to feel apprehensive. And for good reason too.

How do you marry two distinct thematic styles; one that has thrived on the grand and the loquacious, with another that is more mass market driven and aims for the lowest possible denominator? Can highbrow meet lowbrow and find common ground to coexist? Can Kunle Afolayan; he of the ambitious but ultimately flawed spectacles like The Figurine and October 1 resize his outsize vision to fit into Africa Magic’s more modest abilities?

Omugwo is proof that in the quest for commercial and critical acclaim, all is fair, and tags such as strange bedfellows are more suited to human relationships than entertainment. After all, Martin Scorcese has been to HBO (Boardwalk Empire, Vinyl), David Fincher’s been in bed with Netflix (House of Cards) and even the redoubtable Woody Allen took his fast talking shtick to Amazon Studios with the unfavourably received Crisis in Six Scenes.

On deeper introspection however, the creative collaboration between Mr Afolayan and Africa Magic actually makes sense. For while Afolayan’s films have always strived to be notches above the cut, they have all at the same time, appealed to as wide an audience as could be managed, even as he strives to balance product placements and twisty narratives with delivering endings straight out of the Hollywood feel good playbook. Nobody of course does mass market like Africa Magic. And 2016’s The Wedding Party has proved what strategic collaborations can do.

Tradition demands that every time an expectant mother from the South Eastern region (and many other places along the Southern belt) puts to bed, her mother is excited to pack her stuff and move in with the new parents, usually for a period of three months. During this period, the new mother is expected to do as little as possible while her mother (or mother-in-law) showers her with care and affection.

For the newlyweds Raymond (Ken Erics) and Omotunde (Omowunmi Dada), the arrival of their first baby comes with plenty of joy and drama. She is a highflying architect, supervising skyscrapers at the Eko Atlantic construction hub; the kind of high roller who works up until her expected delivery date is around the corner and goes into labour while on the job.

Her hubby, Raymond Ray is a more laid back fellow who documents his domestic affairs on his gig on Radio Lagos 107.5 FM where he works as an on air personality. He likes his hair natty and tries as much as possible to be a decent husband and father, but they are obviously out of their depth with the arrival of the new bundle of joy.

Naturally, Omotunde’s mother, Candance (Ayo Adesanya) should be the helper of first choice but as a colourful woman about town, – we are never quite told what exactly she does for a living,- Candance has plans of her own and they don’t include the earlier than expected arrival of a not-quite-wanted grandchild.

Chimamanda (Patience Ozokwor) capitalises on this vacuum and manipulates her son into having her over for the three month period. Candance, vain and petulant as she is, imagines her status under threat and decides she wants in too. Both matriarchs, formidable in their own rights seize upon the home of the hapless couple, causing mayhem and settling a few scores. They teach some life lessons too. This after all an Africa Magic production.

The story is one you may be familiar with but Afolayan finds a fresh way to tell it, employing jokes at almost every turn and sustaining them with a crisp pacing. Omugwo overcomes a title card that has to go down as one of the ugliest job ever committed to film. It also survives an expository first act that suffers from acute overacting, especially with Omowunmi Dada in an intensely dramatic labour room scene.

But the screenplay written by Kemi Adesoye (Phone swap) rallies and weaves genuine comic moments from everyday domestic living. The writing is impressive for the most part; simple yet witty and the cast deliver their lines with appropriate comic timing.

Afolayan also rallies by bringing a certain lightness and agility with the way he gives Ozokwor’s Chimamanda a movie star entrance. It would be tempting to assert that Ozokwor seizes control of the film from the moment she walks in but that would only be telling half the story as Ayo Adesanya matches her at every turn. Both ladies make the experience of Omugwo more pleasurable.

Ozokwor who made a killing playing mothers from hell on Africa Magic type films is quite the opposite here as she carries the film’s moral burden, gleefully lighting up her scenes of mischief but doubling down to provide rock solid support in times of need, as she does in the film’s most emotional scene where she admonishes her petulant boy.

Candance as embodied by Ayo Adesanya isn’t a real person as much as she is a clown. Ms Adesanya is clearly having all the fun as she takes the character to comedic heights that she has not been allowed to explore in ages. Even when the character is written as inconsistent and goes for lazy tricks, Adesanya manages to shine through. You actually fear for the poor baby every time her Candance picks her up.

They say as a director you test your strength working with babies and animals and Afolayan proves his competence with the scenes involving baby. He pays his debts by sprinkling nods to Lagos state government, Tecno phones and his own work. At least he stays out of the picture this time.

The pairing between Omowunmi Dada and Ken Erics works splendidly as they are entirely believable as a couple. Dada has a wholesome screen presence and Erics seems more at home with comedy as he is allowed to flex and expend his energies this time around. It is the loosest he’s been for a long time and he acquits himself credibly.

Omugwo takes time to speak to some serious themes alongside the comedy; one fine scene demonstrates the information overload that new mothers have to process as they make decisions for their new arrival and another touches on the modern woman’s role in the home and the toll that babies take on the couple’s relationship. There is a bit on postpartum depression that does not quite settle in organically but at least the intentions are noble. The screenplay runs out of steam at some point and Afolayan isn’t quite sure how to end it.

More accessible and enjoyable than the award winning director’s recent work, and funnier than Phone Swap, his earlier attempt at comedy, Omugwo isn’t merely a side hustle; an Africa Magic project directed by Kunle Afolayan. It is a Kunle Afolayan film. Would be interesting to observe how profits are shared.

Carrick: We Got A Point

Featured Image

Manchester United captain Micheal Carrick has told his team mates to see the goalless draw against Manchester City as a point gained in the race for the top four.

The Red Devils produced a beautiful defensive display against Guardiola’s side and kept City at bay despite a red card to Marouane Fellaini.

United had a couple of chances in the first half, but were largely defensive in the second half and Carrick is taking the point from the match, as they are just one point behind City in fifth position.

“It’s a point gained for us,” he told Sky Sports.

“We would have loved to come here and won the game and we thought we could catch City on the break.

“We did have a couple of chances but we obviously had to defend for large spells in the game, but I thought overall we did that very well, apart from at the end when there was a bit of excitement and a bit of a flurry, but we saw the game out well.

“It makes things more difficult when you go down to 10 men. I know there wasn’t too long left but when six minutes go up it’s an awful long time to see out. We were intelligent and done it well.

“It’s tight up there where we are and it’s a point we can take from the game and move on.

“A lot of people made out that it was between us and City [for the top four] but it’s a bigger picture than that at the moment. We’re in a decent position but there’s a lot of work to do.”
