Guardiola: City Should Have Won

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola felt his side should have gotten a win against Middlesbrough, as they face a race to qualify for the Champions League.

Manchester City came from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw away, with Aguero equalising from the spot, before Gabriel Jesus headed in another equaliser in the 85th minute.

Guardiola explained the reason he fielded two strikers, so as to free up De Bruyne in the midfield.

“We put together Sergio and Gabriel up front,” said Guardiola. “Normally we play with one striker but I didn’t want to put Kevin De Bruyne in the role as a holding midfielder. I prefer to have him free to connect with our full-backs, and to have two strikers in the box.

“We deserved to win, definitely. In the second half we made absolutely everything. They crossed the [half-way] line twice.

“In the first 20 minutes of the first half they created chances, but in the second half we were much better.”

Joshua: Fans Want To See Me Face Fury

Featured Image

Anthony Joshua is itching to face undefeated Brit Tyson Fury, after he beat Wladimir Klitschko to add the WBA and IBO belts to his IBF belt.

Joshua overcame a sixth round knockdown to knockdown Klitschko in the 11th round of their Wembley showdown.

The Brit, who has now won all 19 of his professional bouts called out Fury and is certain that’s what the fans want to see.

He told SSN HQ: “I do [think that is the fight the British public wants to see] and that’s why I mentioned it because it’s not as if I’m calling out someone random or drawing attention to someone random.

“I have heard and seen people talking and it seems like it is heading in that direction.

“I just like to entertain and if that’s a fight that will bring entertainment to the sport again, I would love to be involved in another dust-up but this time it would be two Brits coming together.”

Conte: Chelsea Stayed Calm In Everton Win

Featured Image

Antonio Conte was pleased in the manner with which Chelsea won their match against Everton, lauding them for keeping their calm.

Chelsea’s 3-0 win against Everton kept them on the brink of winning another title, with matches against West Brom, Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Watford still left to play.

Chelsea’s closes rivals, Tottenham have a much tougher calendar and Conte was very pleased with the win over Everton, as Chelsea had to wait till the 66th minute to get their first goal.

“In this type of game it’s easy to lose your head, lose your balance,” Conte told Sky Sports. “For this reason at half-time I told them to be calm and to stay in the game.

“We had a lot of patience for the right moment to hit, and we deserved the win. We scored an amazing goal with Pedro, then the second and third, but it was not so easy.

“This gives us lots of confidence. Now it is important to prepare the final rush. If in the next game against Middlesbrough you don’t win you lose this victory. We must look step by step.”

Mourinho Happy With Team Despite Draw

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho says he is really happy with his squad despite their 1-1 draw against Swansea, but is unhappy with his growing injury list.

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring from the penalty spot, before Sigurdsson cancelled it out with a well taken free kick.

Shaw and Bailly couldn’t finish the match due to injuries sustained, joining Ibrahimovic, Rojo, Smalling and Jones on United’s growing list, to the disappointment of Mourinho.

He said: “If I analyse the performance I will obviously find weakness in our performance, that is obvious and it is not difficult to find that.

“But I cannot do that. I cannot isolate from the context and the context is the boys gave everything they can.

“If I had more fresh players I would change. It was easy to see Ashley Young and Jesse Lingard were above the others in terms of freshness, sharpness. It was easy to see that and it was easy to see many players in trouble.

“But we don’t have others, that’s the problem.

“The second half was our best period. We had control, we had chances to score the second goal and probably relax and kill the game and then they scored a beautiful free-kick.

“We lose two points, but I’m very happy with the players. Very happy. I cannot demand anything more from them.

“I am more than happy.”

Police Arrest Man Who Supplies Fuel, Food To Boko Haram Insurgents

Featured Image

The Borno State Police Command on Sunday disclosed that it had arrested a driver, Modu Mustapha, suspected to be purchasing fuel and food items for Boko Haram insurgents.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Damian Chukwu, said that the suspect was arrested after a tip-off by members of the public.

“The police have received information that one Modu Mustapha of Jumptilo village was a terrorists’ collaborator, who buys fuel and food for them, at Alagarno and other hideout.

“The police descended on the suspect, who has confessed to the crime,’’ he said.

The CP alleged that the driver usually fetched firewood in the bush, from where he was suspected to have met the terrorists.

“He said that he had been buying things for the insurgent group.

“We recovered N10, 000 from the suspect, which the terrorists gave him to buy bicycle spare parts for them,” he said.

The commissioner said the suspect also named 15 other firewood vehicle drivers, who engaged in similar crime.

According to him, the police are yet to establish the motive of the driver buying things for the insurgents.

“We have not been able to establish his reasons for buying things for them, whether he is under the influence of spell, coerced into doing it, or doing it willingly as their collaborator,” said Mr. Chukwu

The police commissioner said that because of the nature of the alleged crime, it would be transferred to the military for further action.

The SSS Employment Scandal And Disadvantages Of Ethnic Chauvinism

The SSS Employment Scandal And Disadvantages Of Ethnic Chauvinism, By ‘Tope Oriola

CLICKhere to read more opinion articles

The recent and extremely controversial employment exercise of the SSS is generating ripples across the country. A report by PREMIUM TIMES (also published by Sahara Reporters) indicates that while Katsina State had 51 persons among those employed, all the South-East states had a combined total of 44 persons. Such preferential treatment of a particular group of people is not new in Nigeria.

This article was written by Tope Oriola. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

The reinstatement to the Army of Major General Ahmadu Mohammed, who was implicated in the killings of over 600 civilians during the campaign against Boko Haram terrorists, is one recent example. General Mohammed was reportedly retired in 2014 for reasons unconnected to the killings, according to a Amnesty International report. Yet, he was surreptitiously brought back to the military in early 2016, during a period in which several officers had been dismissed, demoted or jailed for lesser offences.

DSS Recruitment: Outrage Over FG’s Appointments | Why Katsina Got 51 Slots

Not all Northerners benefit from or will ever benefit from these sorts of lopsidedness. I was in class with multiple senior police officers in a graduate programme many years ago. One was an assistant police commissioner, a Northern Christian, who claimed to have been marginalised because of his religion. His juniors had become police commissioners and had been heading state police commands, while he was consistently overlooked. That’s not to suggest that only Northern Muslims benefit from such arrangements, rather it is to show the multi-layered regimen of extra-legal factors being used in preferential schemes.

I will not argue that these practices should stop. In fact, those implementing them via their zero sum thinking should feel free to continue the practices. As a concerned Nigerian, my aim is simply to highlight the implications of such practices.

Besides further undermining Nigeria’s elusive unity, these practices will continue to favour a relatively small number of people at the detriment of the North. Such practices will not contribute to the development of the North, but will succeed in undermining whatever progress is being made. “How”? You may ask.

A friend once narrated how he went to a hospital in Abuja to check an ear infection (he could not afford to go to London given the delicate nature of ear infection therapy in Nigeria). The doctor on duty was a man from the North. The patient refused to be checked by the doctor. He left the consultation room and went to a matron who was from the South, explaining to her that he was afraid of having his ears checked by the doctor whose competence he was unsure of. His concerns were that the doctor might have graduated from a university in the North, where he was certain that the standards were not high. The matron assured the patient that the doctor was indeed trained in a Northern Nigeria university but was one of the best doctors in the hospital. I was mortified by the story but had no counter-points to issues around JAMB cut off point.

Perception is a major organising principle in the world of humans. How many people ask a doctor for his or her credentials before being examined? Have you ever boarded a plane and proceeded to the cockpit to ask for the pilot’s license? This story accentuates one of the consequences of the hiring practices in the SSS, Nigeria Prison Service, the military and the public sector in Nigeria. Such practices make other Nigerians to a priori and unfairly question the competence of professionals from Northern Nigeria. They may be viewed as products of a quota system with adulterated standards and therefore undeserving of whatever they have accomplished. But that is the more obvious part.

The more serious consequence is that over time, Northern Nigerians may begin to question the competence of fellow northerners. When and where the stakes are truly high (take brain surgery, for instance), northerners may view professionals from the North as somehow not up to the task. Those “connections” and ethnic solidarities have their benefits but their long-term effect is self-doubt.

For instance, Northern parents may prefer Southern teachers; patients in the North may feel more comfortable with and adjudge Southern health professionals as better trained and more knowledgeable; mechanics from the South may be deemed more competent than their Northern counterparts and a Northern chief executive may prefer to hire a Southerner for jobs that are demanding. My point is that these practices will damage the psyche of the North in the long run.

These hiring practices will not solve the problems in the North. The beneficiaries will never be secure in themselves and will never know how good they are without the benefits of nationality and religion. Such practices will encourage indolence and foster the sense that hard work does not pay. Other parts of the country will begin with the assumption that they have to over-perform (e.g. on JAMB) and may in fact work harder as the cut off points are higher in Southern states.

Over time, such persons will simply make Nigeria a stepping stone and over-perform, especially internationally. They will view Nigerian government agencies as elegantly set up for mediocre persons, who cannot compete unless they indicate their states of origin or religion on application forms.

I met the chair of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Police Affairs in 2016. The House was in the process of considering a request from the Nigeria Police Force to use electro-magnetic disruption technologies such as Taser CEWs. As part of a research team that had published fairly extensively on the issue in Canada, I wanted to offer my expert opinion on the matter. The chair was from one of the Northern states. The young woman who was his office manager was from the South-East. This made for a fascinating observation at the National Assembly as the representative’s constituents thronged to his office and the office manager professionally handled all kinds of situations. What I deduced was that when it mattered, the politician went for competence over and above ethnic sentiments.

Finally, self-doubt is a hefty price to pay especially when it becomes a group phenomenon. Those carrying out these practices must recognise the long-term psychological impact of what they are doing.

IDP Camps In Borno Will Not Be Shut On May 29 – NEMA

Featured Image

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has stated that the planned closure of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Borno by May 29 was no longer feasible.

READ MORE: All IDP Camps In Borno Would Cease To Operate By May 2017

Speaking with newsmen in Maiduguri, the state capital, on Sunday, Mr Muhammad Kanar, the NEMA North East Coordinator, said that IDPs whose communities had been liberated were, however, free to return home voluntarily.

He said: “Actually, Gov. Kashim Shettima arrived at the May 29 date for closure of all IDP camps based on his conviction that things will go on as they started from last year.

“It was Shettima’s hope and the hope of every disaster management expert for the camps to close early so people can return to their normal life.”

The coordinator added that the governor was motivated by the gallant efforts of the military in liberating many communities in a short period.

He continued: “Stakeholders were amazed by the speed our gallant soldiers achieved a lot within a few weeks in the fight against insurgency.

“They were able to recapture all the 22 Local Government Areas from the Boko Haram and liberated so many communities within and outside the areas.

“These gave hope and focus that by May 29 government will be able to return IDPs back home.”

“But now it seems that closing the camps is not possible by the set date. We have to re-plan again.

“By May 29, any IDP wishing to go back to his place can go, so long as the place is safe enough.”

Kanar said that the hope of returning all IDPs back home was not totally lost.

“Up till today the hope is still there, if we can get the place safe, secured those willing to go back can still return.

“Right now we have satellite camps in all liberated LGAs, where IDPs living in Maiduguri can stay pending when they can move to their communities.

“If you do not want to stay in Maiduguri, you can go there. Many houses have been rehabilitated and normalcy restored in many LGA headquarters,” he said.

Nigeria Considers Further Review Of Petrol Pricing Template

Featured Image

The Federal Government of Nigeria has said it would further review its pricing template for petrol.

The review is with the aim of removing several multi-layered charges and costs that affect the pump price of petrol at service stations across the country, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, said on Saturday.

He added that the government would continue to work with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to find ways of providing subsidised foreign exchange interventions for oil marketers in the country.

In a podcast he shared on his social media accounts, Kachikwu said, at the moment, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was importing almost all the petrol used in the country, a responsibility he stated the corporation was undertaking at a huge cost.

The minister added that marketers in the country were no longer importing petroleum products because of the unfavourable business fundamentals which had been influenced by the rising prices of crude oil.

He said: “Downstream continues to be an area that has numerous challenges, that is why throwing ideas on them will continue to be something that any minister or chief executive of NNPC will continue to focus on.”

“The environment has since changed, when we did all these, pricing for crude was more in the $25 to $30 per barrel, today it is in excess of $54, which is fantastic because it means that our revenue stream is improving.

“But, it is a twin window, whenever the price of crude goes up, obviously the price of refined petrol goes up and we begin to have systemic challenge in terms of the pricing on the local base, so that gap has begun to return and today what you find is that the NNPC continues to import massively on behalf of the Federal Government. It has gone back to about 90-95 per cent for the whole country and therefore its books are absorbing some of the cost implications of this.”

“The second is that once this happens the marketers begin to shift backwards, participation by individual marketers to help us continue the normal business and marketing cycle that should be what you expect is no longer existing. Most of them are not importing.”

On plans to stem the development, Kachikwu said: “One of the things we are doing is that we are looking at our existing templating position, and what we are doing with that is first addressing some of the soft end of things that affect pricing.

“We are removing too many multi-layered charges on importation, we are working with the ministry of transport to reduce those to what was initially approve by the president, and as such, we should take away a good chunk of the expenses. We are working to see how the CBN can provide us with a fairly subsidised FX for products priced in dollars.”

Joshua: I Intend To Keep Improving

Featured Image

Anthony Joshua believes character was the key to his win over Klitschko and has warned the heavyweight division, he’ll continue to improve.

The Olympic gold medalist stormed to a 19th straight professional win on Saturday at Wembley, but had to overcome a knockdown to win the game.

Klitschko was knocked down in the fifth round and replied with a knockdown of his own in the sixth round.

“This is boxing – I’m only going to improve,” Joshua – who not only retained his IBF title but also won the WBA ‘super’ belt too – told Sky Sports Box Office.

“Sometimes you can be a phenomenal boxer but this sport is about character. When you go to the trenches, that’s when you find out who you really are.

“In this small little ring there’s nowhere to hide. As I said from the get-go, it will be a boxing classic and the best man will win. There’s no complications with boxing – anyone can do this.

“I came out and I won – that’s how far I had to dig. I didn’t go into a 12-round slug-fest and struggle to beat Klitschko. I came back and fought my heart out.”

Joshua also paid tribute to his fallen opponent and says he is a role model for the boxing world.

“As boxing states, you leave your ego at the door and respect your opponent, so a massive shout-out to Wladimir Klitschko for taking part,” the Englishman added during his post-fight interview.

“I’m not going to say too much in case he wants to come back and fight me again, but in terms of the boxing Hall of Fame and the boxing arena, he’s a role model in and out of the ring.

“I’ve got nothing but love and respect for anyone who steps inside the ring.

“I’m a little bit emotional now because I know I’ve got doubters who think I can’t do this and I can’t do that. But I dig deep.”

In Bayelsa: Teachers Threaten Strike Over 10 Months Salary Arrears

Featured Image

The Bayelsa chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Sunday threatened to commence a three-day warning strike from May 2, over unpaid nine-and-a-half months salary backlog.

The NUT, in a communique signed by its Chairman, Kala-Ama Tonpre, and Secretary, Johnson Hector, said the union took the decision after its Executive Council meeting held on Saturday in Yenagoa.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the NUT in Bayelsa had embarked on a strike which shut public schools in Bayelsa for six weeks at the beginning of the 2016/2017 academic session in September 2016 over unpaid salaries.

The union said it also resolved that the state government should urgently pay the salaries it owed primary school teachers to bring them at par with other civil servants in the state.

The NUT also called on the government to take over the funding and management of primary education without attaching conditions to it.

The union further asked the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Post Primary Schools Board to implement the 2013 and 2015 promotions and to conduct the 2016 exercise without delay.

It appealed to the government to involve other banks in the payment of secondary school teachers’ salaries instead of giving the mandate to only the Sterling Bank.

The union also urged the government to take care of the cost of bank transaction to reduce excess deductions on its members’ accounts.

The NUT implored the government to fill vacancies created by retired and deceased teachers by employing qualified personnel and government should also begin the payment of N18,000 minimum wage arrears to teachers.

Bellew: Joshua Is King

Featured Image

Tony Bellew has hailed Anthony Joshua as the “king of the boxing world” after his sensational win against Klitschko on Saturday.

Joshua knocked out Klitschko in the 11th round at Wembley, to add the WBA ‘super’ title to his IBF belt.

The undefeated Brit suffered the first knockdown of his career in the sixth round, but retained his belt in front of 90,000 fans.

“He is the best heavyweight in the world, make no bones about that. Absolutely no question,” he told Sky Sports.

“He is the number one, he has no questions to answers. He is no longer the king of British boxing, he is the king of the boxing world.

“I did say in the build-up that when he gets caught by hard, clean shot, it could be a problem, but he answered that by being put on the floor.

“Yes, it took him three rounds to get over it but we have just learnt that when the going gets tough, Joshua gets going.”

“Klitschko stole rounds, very cleverly and Anthony played the game a bit,” he said.

“But ultimately he ticked all the boxes and proved all the doubters wrong. Even I had doubts about him once it’s gone past four, but I am so happy I got it wrong.”

Alba: The Dream Is To Play At Barcelona For A Long Time

Spanish defender, Jordi Alba says he wants to remain at Barcelona despite uncertainty about his future.

The defender has lost his spot in the starting XI under Enrique and has been continually linked with a move to United.

Enrique’s switch to a three-man defence has seen Alba dropped out of the squad, but the spaniard is keen on remaining in the squad.

“It’s clear that, the more I play, the better,” the Spaniard told reporters. “My dream has always been to play here and stay at Barcelona for a long time.

“We haven’t spoken about it, but a footballer always wants to play and I have not played as much as I’ve wanted to.

“I don’t want to look for excuses but at least I’m currently getting game time and I want to win La Liga and the Copa del Rey.”

“Sometimes these situations all happen over your head,” he continued. “Not playing was unusual for me, but it matures you and makes you value things more.

“The change of system influenced things a lot. Whether I like it or not, I have to accept it.”

Thiago Motta: PSG Are The Most Ambitious In Europe

Featured Image

Thiago Motta says Paris Saint Germain are not the best team in Europe, but they are the most ambitious in Europe.

Since QSI took over the French club in 2011, the Ligue 1 giants have dominated the French league, but have not enjoyed European success.

However, Thiago Motta believes they will attain the level their owners want of them in no time.

“Today we can all agree that PSG’s not the greatest club in Europe, but it is the most ambitious,” the Italy international, 34, told TF1. “One day, it will be among the best two or three clubs in the world.”

Even finishing top of Ligue 1 is far from certain, with the destination of the title out of the reigning champions’ hands with four matches of the campaign remaining and a tough trip to Nice slated for Sunday night.

“We have to treat every match like a final,” Motta added. “That’s again the case against Nice.

“I hope that we’ll finish the season with the two titles we can still win: the league and the Coupe de France.”
