Troops Kill Notorious Militant Leader, Gang Members In Ondo

Featured Image

Troops of Operation Delta Safe have killed a notorious militant leader and some of his gang members who specialize in militancy and kidnappings around Ajakpa community in the creeks of Southern Ondo State on Sunday night.

It is understood that the armed bandits who were led by their notorious gang leader, Ossy Ibori, attacked the troops.

The troops in line with its mandate to rid Niger Delta of all criminal acts of militancy and kidnappings, while repelling the attack, gunned down the leader during gun duel, along with some of his gang members.

His body was identified by some of the locals in the area.

While search for other criminals who jumped into the water with gunshot wounds is ongoing, troops also recovered one AK-47 Rifle and 4 Magazines.

It was gathered that the militants, led by late Ossy Ibori, had been terrorising parts of Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states prior to the operation, committing many atrocities, threatening the peace and security of the general areas.

Last month, the members of the gang killed an army captain and 2 Policemen at Ikorodu, while late last year, they abducted students and staff of a secondary school.

The criminals were also responsible for several attacks at Ese-Odo community around Ajakpa, Safarogbo and Balowo areas.

Sadly, in the process, one gallant soldier paid the supreme price while 3 others sustained gun shot wounds.

They have since been moved to a military hospital for proper medical attention.

FRSC Launches Advanced Web-Based Portal For Driver’s License, Number Plates

Featured Image

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a more advanced web-based verification portal for driver’s license and number plates.

Daily Trust quoted the Corps Marshal Boboye Oyeyemi as saying this at a training workshop for personnel of security agencies at the Corps headquarter Abuja.

Oyeyemi said the new portal will enable the system provide information such as demographics, biometrics and offences committed by the holders of the Driver’s licence and user of the number plate.

He added that the new system also applies to the speed limiting device portal, driving school standardization portal and Road transport safety standardization portal.

The corps marshal further said the various driving schools across the country were now being certified and linked to the advanced portal to enable the corps monitor the number of students admitted, the curriculum and competence of the students they present for driver’s license.

He added that there were different classes of the license for drivers but competence remains the prerequisite for one to acquire any class of the license.

Oyeyemi said more security features have been built into the system to make it impossible for the licences to be forged or obtained by proxy without undergoing biometrics data and physical capturing.

Kyle Walker Wants To Quit Tottenham After Row With Manager Mauricio Pochettino

Featured Image

Kyle Walker has decided his future is away from Tottenham, according to The Independent

Barcelona and both Manchester clubs are said to be interested in Walker, who has apparently fallen out with manager Mauricio Pochettino over fitness and selection.

It is thought he would cost at least £35m and may be able to double his wages by leaving Spurs.

The issue between Walker and Pochettino is long-running and boils down to Pochettino’s doubts about Walker’s fitness and his performances in training. He thinks that Walker struggles to play two big games in a week, a view that Walker seriously disputes. Walker did not play any of Spurs’ three Champions League away games, including the crucial 2-1 defeat at Monaco last November which knocked Spurs out of the competition.

Walker has not handed in a transfer request at Spurs yet but he is attracted by the possibility of a big move and frustrated by recent events. When Pochettino was asked last Tuesday about the summer, he admitted some players would be sold, but only if he chose they could go, as might well be the case with Walker this summer.

“The players that we want to keep, we will keep,” Pochettino said. “Because [Daniel Levy] said to me ‘we don’t need money’. If we sell some players it is because we want to sell some players. For our fans, it is so clear that all the decisions we take are for the reason to try to improve the team, try to be more competitive next season.”

May Day: Gombe Assures ‘Immediate’ Implementation Of N56,000 Minimum Wage

Featured Image

The Gombe State Government has assured civil servants in the state of immediate implementation of the proposed N56, 000 national minimum wage, once the federal government approves it.

The State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, gave the assurance at the commemoration of 2017 Workers’ Day in Gombe on Monday, May 1, 2017.

Speaking on his behalf, his deputy, Charles Iliya, who is currently the acting governor, said:

“As soon as the Federal Government approves the new minimum wage, our administration will implement it within the limit of our resources.’’

He called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Nigerians to be resilient and support government efforts aimed at moving the country out of current economic recession.

“Our administration accords top priority to the welfare of civil servants whose selfless service contributed immensely to the socio-economy development of our dear state,’’ he said.

Speaking earlier, the state chairman, NLC, Aliyu Kamara, had appealed to the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency approve the new minimum wage submitted by the technical committee.

He said that approval of the new minimum wage became necessary, considering the current economic recession and the attendant high cost of goods and services in the country.

Mr. Kamara also appealed to state government to consider all issues presented to it during the interactive session held between labour leaders and government.

He noted that this year theme entitled, “Labour Relations in Economic Recession an Appraisal’’ could not have come at a better time, considering the numerous challenges facing Nigerian workers.

Gylfi Sigurdsson Confident Swansea City Can Survive Relegation

Featured Image

Gylfi Sigurdsson is not listening to speculation about his future, and is only focusing on trying to keep Swansea in the Premier League.

The Iceland international scored a late free-kick on Sunday to help earn a 1-1 draw at Manchester United.

He has been linked with a move away from the Welsh club in the summer, with Everton and West Ham among those said to be interested.

“It’s just a part of our job, if you’re doing well these things happen,” he is quoted as saying by Wales Online.

“But I’m completely focused on helping Swansea stay in the Premier League because I don’t want to get relegated.”

Asked about the goal that condemned Manchester United to a 10th home draw of the season, Sigurdsson commented: “I made my mind up just to go over the wall and hit the target and luckilly I did.”

And he added: It was a fantastic feeling scoring at this stadium and in the situation we’re in it was a very important goal and thankfully it got us a point.

“It’s a nice stadium and grew up as a United supporter and it’s nice to play here and hopefully it will continue over the next few years.”

Shane Long’s Southampton Future Will Be Decided In The Summer – Claude Puel

Featured Image

Shane Long’s Southampton future is set to be decided in the summer.

The striker has been restricted to just nine Premier League starts this season but is under contract until 2020.

“We will see all this at the end of the season,” manager Claude Puel is quoted as saying by the Daily Echo.

“Of course, a striker, all the players, want to play, but it’s another profile like then [Manolo] Gabbiadini for example. He has quickness and he can give other solutions.

“We will see if we have the opportunity to have a different profile striker and we will see until the end of the season and after another thing.”

“We will see at the end of the season.”

Puel was asked whether he had told Long this and replied: “It’s not the moment to speak, to have conversations about this.

“All the player stay with a good concertation, a good focus, about the last five games now and it’s important to speak in the good moment. This is not a good moment for me.

“It’s important to finish with five good and strong games.”

Long has found himself behind firstly Charlie Austin, and more lately Manolo Gabbiadini, and is likely to find himself at least third choice again next season under Puel if he stays.

However, Gabbiadini has struggled to hit his stride again after an injury following his run of five goals in six games.

His last goal came at the start of March, and the Italian’s movement also seems to have suffered since his return to the side.

“And also a big thank-you to Brendan Rodgers. The past two to three years has been tough. Obviously being at City and not playing for two years, and being at Villa and getting relegated.

May Day: NLC Demands N25,000 Minimum Pension For Workers In Sokoto

Featured Image

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is demanding a review of pension to a minimum of N25,000, per month, in Sokoto State, as against the N4,000 being paid to workers for the past twelve years.

The demand was made by the chairman of the congress in the state, Mr Aminu Umar, on Monday at the 2017 May Day celebration.

Umar also called for the implementation of the government circular of December 2014, on the payment of gratuity and pension to staff and medical workers in the Local Government service, as their counterparts in the state service.

He commended the State Government for the payment of arrears of gratuities of more than four billion to retired civil servants at the State and Local Government service.

The chairman also noted the regular payment of salary and pension “at a time when some workers in some states are being owed arrears of salary and pension”.

“Regular training and retraining of civil servants, priority given to education, agriculture and commerce.

“Increased food production and security, creation of job opportunities, as well as increased revenue generation, among others”, Umar said.

Umar further assured that workers in the state would continue to be hardworking, honest and dedicated to duty, in order to move the state forward.

“He’s been in and out through injury. He’s been in and out through form. You know he can score goals.

“I think he’s the type of lad who needs to be loved a little bit and I’m not sure he’s feeling the love at the moment at Liverpool and his future will be interesting come the summer.”

Manchester United Lead Race To Sign Leicester City’s Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel

Man Utd have taken the lead over their city rivals in the chase for Kasper Schmeichel, according to Sky sports.

The Leicester ‘keeper is United’s first choice to replace David de Gea if, as expected, he heads back home to Madrid to join Real.

United’s chances of landing the 30-year old Denmark international have improved after Schmeichel left his long-term representatives, Triple S Management, to join Italian agent Luca Bascherini – an agent who enjoys excellent relations at Old Trafford.

Schmeichel signed a new five-year deal at the King Power Stadium last summer, but may struggle to turn down a lucrative offer from either Manchester clubs.

And last month A Bola newspaper in Portugal reported that if Real fail to land De Gea, then Schmeichel could well be their next target

Is CBN Defending The Naira Or Dollar?

Featured Image

Is CBN defending The Naira Or Dollar? – Henry Boyo

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

“As I speak to you, our external reserves stand above $31bn, and that provides us with enough fire power to be able to defend the naira”

–Godwin Emefiele (Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, April 25, 2017).

This article was written by Henry Boyo. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

The question, however, is this: Is the CBN actually defending the naira? This question is addressed in the above title, which was first published in The Punch and Vanguard newspapers on January 12, 2015. Please read on:

The serial naira devaluation, from N1=$1 to almost N70=$1, was probably the most significant instigator of the oppressive economic challenges induced by the International Monetary Fund-imposed Structural Adjustment Programme.  Nigeria’s once pulsating industrial base soon became almost silent, with increasing idle capacity and unemployment.

Worse still, all wages and incomes were reduced to ‘peanut’ value by the twin bullets of naira devaluation and inflation. Ultimately, the ‘check out’ syndrome became fashionable, with well-heeled professionals and technocrats seeking greener pastures abroad to sustain dignity in their lifestyles; the brain drain, particularly amongst youths, now approaches epidemic proportions. Undeniably, the near fatal blows from SAP truncated our development and we are now listed amongst the world’s poorest nations.

Curiously, however, the exceptionally high crude oil prices, which once hovered between $100-$140 per barrel, and the bountiful dollar reserves accumulated, did not redeem our economy or improve social welfare. Unexpectedly, increasing dollar reserves, which provided extended payments cover for our imports, inexplicably, continued to foster weaker naira exchange rates, such that one was forced to wonder if less dollar reserves would actually stimulate a stronger naira.

Well, crude oil prices have since receded below $60 per barrel, but the reduced dollar revenue, has also, undeniably, constituted another major onslaught on the naira exchange rate and economic progress.

Thus, it seems that, in our quest for increased foreign reserves and socially and industrially supportive exchange rates, we now find ourselves in a bizarre twist of “heads you lose, tails I win”. Indeed, as with SAP, IMF is also presently leading the call for further naira devaluation.

The IMF technocrats, embedded in the management of our economy, have also deliberately fostered the unfortunate notion that the naira is actually overvalued, even when we had custody of the best ever foreign reserves and more extended imports payments cover. Regrettably, government economic blueprints, such as the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy, were predicated on the erroneous mindset that inclusive growth cannot evolve, unless the economy is first diversified; there is also the unfortunate premise that fortuitously bountiful reserves cannot induce, a stronger naira exchange rate.

Well, today, the naira exchange rate is closer to the N180=$1 projected in the NEEDS blueprint to drive economic diversification and growth. Ironically, however, enabling rates of inflation, cost of borrowing and exchange rate stability still remain, sadly, unattainable.

Certainly, no economy can succeed when the real sector is constrained to borrow at over 20 per cent interest rate, while consumer demand also remains severely hamstrung with annual inflation rates of 8-12 per cent, or indeed, when the naira rate keeps depreciating, despite buoyant reserves and extended import payments cover; furthermore, economic growth and diversification will invariably remain elusive, wherever government knowingly pays over N600bn interest (over 10 per cent) on loans that are simply sterilized from use, despite the crying need of the real sector for cost of borrowing to fall below seven per cent.

Sadly, the CBN and our economic management teams have failed to construct an enabling foundation that will support low cost of funds (3-6 per cent), low inflation rate (1-3 per cent) and a truly liberalised non-monopolistic forex market that will drive the elusive quest for economic diversification and inclusive growth.

Nonetheless, politicians, experts, and a gullible public are once again chorusing the need for diversification, and as usual, with the unfortunate misconception that we will approach El Dorado by simply throwing hundreds of billions of naira at various sub-sectors as intervention funds.

Indeed, in an economy with an abiding burdensome problem of stupendously surplus naira, intervention funds, regrettably, only make things worse as they simply compound the problem of eternally surplus naira when disbursed.

Ultimately, the intervention funds will instigate another kind of government intervention, which compels the CBN to step up its rate of borrowing to mop up increasingly surplus naira despite the excruciating, destabilising and distortional interest rates which crowd out the real sector from loanable funds, notwithstanding the collateral adverse consequences on inflation, the naira exchange rate, inclusive growth and job creation.

In practice, micro and small enterprises are probably worst hit, as they generally struggle to obtain loans that are as oppressive as six per cent per month or 72 per cent annually.

Clearly, the unyielding burden of ‘eternally’ surplus naira is actually the major obstacle in the path of creating those supportive indices which can effectively drive growth and economic diversification. Regrettably, we have remained in denial of the process through which the CBN consolidates its so-called and celebrated ‘own reserves’.

Instructively, the CBN’s reserves are accumulated by capturing distributable dollar derived revenue and substituting freshly created naira values as monthly statutory allocations to government. This arrangement invariably increases the CBN’s cache of dollars, but it sadly induces the burdensome spectre of surplus cash in the economy.

Furthermore, the pitching of such eternally surplus naira against rationed auctions of dollars will ultimately and unwittingly protect the dollar market value against the naira. Consequently, the CBN may have inadvertently (or deliberately) become a greater defender of the dollar than the naira in the forex market.

Ironically, therefore, the higher and more bountiful the dollar revenue (from high crude prices and output) the greater also will be the fresh supply of naira that the CBN will create and unleash on the economy as substitute allocations for dollar derived income. Thus, whenever we celebrate the CBN’s rising dollar reserves, we must recognise that the consolidation of such reserves, unfortunately, also ultimately precipitates an increasing spread of surplus naira or excess liquidity in the money market.

Invariably, the greater the naira liquidity, the harsher and more counter-productive would be CBN’s monetary control measures to reduce naira liquidity, so as to restrain inflation and the ability of banks to expand credit to customers, despite the adverse economic consequences of such restrictive policies.

It seems farcical, therefore, that the same CBN whose monetary management actually intimidates and pulverises its own child, the naira in the forex market, can also be so wrongly and favourably perceived as defending the naira from its accumulated self-styled ‘own reserves’, which instigated the ‘curse’ of surplus naira and it train of adverse consequences in the first place.

It is ironical that the same agency, which sustains a market disequilibrium in favour of the dollar when it substitutes fresh naira values for dollar denominated revenue, would later turn round, in apparent defence of the naira exchange rate, to regularly auction fractions of the dollar cache that it earlier captured, after it has substituted and suffocated the market with surplus naira liquidity. Unfortunately, such unceasing and pervasive naira liquidity consciously unleashed by the CBN, invariably precipitates weaker naira exchange rates when eventually pitched against dollar rations auctions by the CBN from its reserves.

In this event, the CBN must immediately stop digging itself into a deeper hole with a naira defence strategy that has consistently worked against the local currency over time to deepen poverty. Surely, the adoption of dollar certificates for allocating dollar denominated revenue will eliminate or critically reduce the burden of excess naira liquidity and therefore, give the naira a fighting chance against the dollar in the forex market.

Besides, the elimination of the oppressive burden of excess naira liquidity will also induce lower rates of inflation and the cost of borrowing to leave the door wide open for inclusive economic growth, economic diversification and rapidly increasing job opportunities.” (January 2015).

Fast forward to April 2017: Reserves are over $30bn; inflation is rising at 17 per cent plus; real sector borrowing has increased by over 20 per cent; N305-N400=$1, unemployment still rising, while excess liquidity remains unyielding! Heaven help us!

Save the naira, Save Nigerians.

Laurent Koscielny A Summer Target For Marseille And Manchester City

Featured Image

Laurent Koscielny could be on his way out of the Emirates in the summer according to the Sun

The 31-year-old is by far the most reliable defender in the Arsenal squad, so an exit — particularly if it was to a Premier League rival — would be a bitter blow to Arsene Wenger’s already frail setup.

Manchester City and Marseille have been mentioned as two possible destinations but, given that the France international signed long-term contract extension earlier this season, it remains to be seen if the Gunners would be willing to cash in on the centre-back.

Laurent Koscielny has made close to 300 appearances for Arsene Wenger’s men and has won two FA Cup’s, and could add a third to his trophy cabinet when they take on Chelsea in the upcoming final.

Over 500 PDP Members Defect To APC In Akwa Ibom

Featured Image

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday lost over 500 of its members in Ikono Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom to the All Progressives Congress (APC) through defection.

Among those that defected were four former councillors, Iboro Akpan, Samuel Etuk, Ndifreke Essien and Jonathan Umana, a former PDP chapter secretary, Dr George Udoh, a former University of Uyo official, Dr Silas Udofia and Mr Victor Etefia, an oil mogul in the state.

Speaking on the development, the former senator of Akwa Ibom North West in the National Assembly, Sen. Aloysius Etok, expressed joy that all the “real politicians” in the area were together in the APC, adding that the era of writing election results in Government House, Uyo, is over.

He described some of those still in Ikono PDP as “lightweight and violent politicians” with no grassroots support.

The senator dismissed as false the claim by the PDP state government that it had constructed 250 kilometres of roads in the state.

Also speaking, former member of the House of Representatives for Ikono/Ini federal constituency, Mrs Iquo Inyang commended the defectors for choosing to embrace the change that was going on in the country.

Inyang applauded the anti-corruption war of President Muhammadu Buhari administration, adding that it was the answer to the prayers of Nigerians who were impoverished by the mindless looting of the treasury by the last PDP government.

While receiving the defectors, Obong Uko Umoh, the State APC Vice Chairman for Akwa Ibom North East Senatorial District who represented the State Chairman Dr Amadu Atai, said that the PDP being heavily factionalized would fade away from Akwa Ibom politics in 2019.

He charged the defectors to return to their wards to join existing APC members to preach the message of change.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Mr Iboro Akpan, a former leader of Ikono Legislative Council, assured APC of their total commitment and said he was making history after former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the second former PDP member to publicly shred his membership card.

The defection in Ikono, generally regarded as the cradle of the Ibibio, was the latest defection to  hit the PDP in the state in recent times.

Barcelona Looking To Sell Players First Before Buying

Featured Image

Barcelona have big plans to buy new players this summer, but according to AS, the Catalan giants will be obliged to sell some of their existing core before going to market.

The Blaugrana’s wish list includes some of the world’s top young stars — like Marco Verratti, Philippe Coutinho and Hector Bellerin — as the team looks to life after Luis Enrique. And the list of players who could make way is equally recognizable, with Arda Turan and Jeremy Mathieu expected to be surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou.

One more high-profile name whose future is on the fence is Jordi Alba. The Spain international has seen his playing time reduced this season and, despite his expressed desire to stay at Barca, he wants to be guaranteed regular opportunities in Barca’s first-choice XI. Manchester United are reportedly interested in the 28-year-old as Jose Mourinho attempts to shore up his defence in the close season.

Brighton Want Chelsea Striker Tammy Abraham On Loan For Next Season

Featured Image

Brighton are keen on signing Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham for their debut Premier League season, according to The Sun.

The 19-year-old has scored 26 goals on loan at Bristol City this season and that has convinced manager Chris Hughton he could be the ideal man to come in to offer a different striking option to veteran Glenn Murray and Sam Baldock.

And apparently Brighton are hopeful Chelsea will again decide to send the striker out on loan.

The Brighton boss got a chance to check up on the forward at close quarters yesterday as his team were denied being crowned champions with a 1-0 defeat to City.

The England under-21 star has attracted the interest of a number of top flight clubs with Everton and Leicester both keen on trying to secure a permanent deal for him.

Man City’s Kelechi Iheanacho Offered To Borussia Dortmund In Massive Deal To Sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Featured Image

Manchester City are reportedly ready to offer Kelechi Iheanacho to Borussia Dortmund to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Sun say there has been a breakthrough in talks as Iheanacho will be allowed to leave in a £60m deal

The Gabon international is one of Europe’s very best strikers, having found the back of the net 35 times this season, and cash alone may not be enough to convince Thomas Tuchel’s side to sell.

Iheanacho has fallen down the City pecking order since Gabriel Jesus’ arrival in January, and a move to the Bundesliga may appeal to the striker, who is chasing game time to ensure he’s part of Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup plans.

Chile’s Coach Juan Antonio Pizzi Joins Barcelona’s Managerial Shortlist

Featured Image
Chile head coach Juan Antonio Pizzi is a reported target for Barcelona to replace Luis Enrique.

Sport say Pizzi has joined Ernesto Valverde and Juan Carlos Unzue on the shortlist.

Pizzi is a former Barcelona player who apparently has maintained a “good relationship” with the club.

He has won titles in Barcelona and coached at Valencia. While Pizzi has a contract with Chile, his arrival would not cost Barcelona too much money. They like his character, his hunger for titles, the football his team plays and his good relationship with Barcelona’s South Americans.

Barcelona’s sporting director Robert Fernandez knows him personally from when he was a player and knows his virtues. Another option.
