Luis Ortiz is quite certain he needs just eight rounds to beat Anthony Joshua, if he is confirmed as the mandatory challenger for the WBA ‘super’ title.

The undefeated Cuban boxer saw some weaknesses in Joshua, which Klitschko exposed in his loss.

“I feel more than ever that I will KO Joshua within eight rounds,” he told boxingscene.com.

“I also feel that after Klitschko dropped Joshua with one punch that Eddie Hearn will never let Joshua get in the ring with me.

NNPC: Nigeria To Stop Petrol Importation By 2019

Featured Image

The 2019 target set by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to exit importation of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) better known as petrol, is still achievable, Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Kacalla Baru, has said.

Dr. Baru made this known while fielding questions from journalists on the sidelines of the ongoing Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, United States, on Monday.

NNPC Supplies ‘Most Reliable, Cheapest Power Source’ To Nigerians

The GMD, who was represented by the Chief Operating Officer, Gas & Power, Engr. Saidu Mohammed told journalists that as at today, all the nation’s three refineries were producing petroleum products.

“We load out at least 5 to 6 million litres of PMS daily and about that same quantity of AGO daily from the three refineries. That is part of what is making the PMS market in Nigeria stable today. We believe that the set target of exiting PMS importation in 2019 is achievable,” he stated.

He maintained that because rehabilitation of the refineries has been hampered by lack of regular Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) over the years, it would take more years to get the refineries fully back to their nameplate capacities.

“Don’t forget also that for us to exit PMS importation in 2019, we have to also bring in new refineries that will co-locate with existing ones together with the new ones that will be built. Then, we see ourselves as a net exporter of products. On this, I can tell you that we are on course,” he added.

He observed that following NNPC’s foray into the energy sector through electricity generation and other renewables, Nigeria’s perennial power sector woes may soon be over.

“Essentially NNPC has been there. Many people don’t know that the NNPC has been part of the power sector. We supply steadily about 1,000mw from Afam and Okpai, two of Nigeria’s most reliable power plants serving as one of the cheapest sources of power today in the country,” he noted.

According to the GMD, the NNPC engaged its Joint venture partners, Chevron and Total, towards building similar power plants at Obite and Agura.

He said the Corporation was also looking at bringing in new investors. “We have advertised and are currently evaluating potential partners in this regard,” he said.

400 Patients Recalled For HIV Tests After They Were Treated By An Infected Doctor

Featured Image

About four hundred patients have been recalled for HIV tests after it emerged that they had been treated by a doctor infected with the ‘deadly’ virus.

The recall affects 401 patients who were under the care of the locum doctor, who worked in orthodpaedic surgery and A&E, and was employed at three NHS hospital trusts between June 2010 and February 2015, Daily Mail reports.

Prostitute Declared WANTED After Infecting 500 Men With HIV In Zamfara

While Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust recalled 121 patients, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust recalled 223 patients with Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust recalling 57 patients.

The hospitals said patients who had undergone ‘invasive procedures where there is a potential risk of infection’ have been identified and invited back for a precautionary blood test.

Dr Stephen Fowlie, Medical Director in Nottingham, said the doctor had treated patients and then subsequently been diagnosed with HIV.

Dr Fowlie said: ‘The risk that any patient has been infected by transmission of the virus from this doctor is extremely low.

‘However, because the doctor’s diagnosis was unknown during their employment with us (2013 to 2015), we are contacting patients who had had at-risk operations involving this doctor to advise they return to hospital for a blood test as a precautionary measure.

‘Transmission of the virus between an infected healthcare worker and a patient with an open wound can only occur if health workers themselves have an injury with bleeding when they are delivering patient care.

‘There is no evidence this happened to this doctor in any patient contact.

‘We are arranging clinic appointments, test results within 24 hours, and appropriate support and advice from our specialists for these 223 patients and their families.

‘Patients’ siblings and friends have no cause for concern and no other patients have cause for concern.’

The locum doctor is no longer working for the NHS, and has been referred to the General Medical Council (GMC), which has placed conditions on their registration.

Health officials also emphasised that HIV could not be passed on by day-to-day contact and while HIV positive staff can work on patients, there were strict conditions in place.

Tottenham Eyes ‘Bigger Things’ Than Arsenal -Victor Wanyama

Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama has claimed that the club have eyes on bigger prizes than finishing ahead of rivals Arsenal in the Premier League.

Mauricio Pochettino‘s side secured a 2-0 win in the North London derby at White Hart Lane on Sunday and are guaranteed to finish ahead of the Gunners in the league for the first time in 21 years.

“I’m not surprised because we worked very hard and wanted to win so bad,” Wanyama told Sky Sports News. “That’s what happens when you want to win and you are at home. We had great support and were full of confidence.

“I think (finishing above Arsenal) is good but there are bigger things to look at. That is just us getting better and having a better season than last.

Jose Mourinho Bans Manchester United Players From Social Media

Featured Image

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly introduced strict regulations on his players’ use of social media.

The Independent reports that Jose Mourinho is unhappy with how much his players share online and is keen to restrict the flow of information out of the club at certain times.

The Portuguese boss is understood to have brought in new rules on what his squad can and cannot post on social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram.

United’s players are now forbidden from publishing any pictures from training and anything at all from the 48 hours leading up to a game, especially from the team bus on the way to matches.

The initiative is thought to be part of Mourinho’s plan to whip his squad back into title-winning shape after suggesting that they have allowed standards to slip since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Mourinho has reportedly been increasingly frustrated with his players’ use of social media and the likes of Luke Shaw have already been reprimanded this season after posting footage of himself training at home – a video the manager thought painted the club in a bad light.

Mourinho’s policy has been communicated to all players and their social media teams, and while it is not always adhered to, it is part of the manager’s campaign to change the mentality among the squad that he believes has gone soft in the last few seasons.

Aston Villa Striker Jonathan Kodjia Likely To Miss Start Of Next Season With Ankle Injury

Featured Image

Championship side Aston Villa have confirmed that top-scorer Jonathan Kodjia suffered a broken ankle during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Blackburn Rovers.

Jonathan Kodjia was forced off in the second half of the match at Ewood Park and could now miss the start of next season should he require surgery on the problem.

Kodjia will visit a specialist in Europe to determine whether an operation is needed ahead of the summer break.

“Jonathan Kodjia has suffered a broken ankle. He picked up the injury in the 1-0 defeat to Blackburn this past weekend,” read a statement on the club’s official website.

“Kodjia will now visit a specialist in Europe this week for further tests. The injury will likely require surgery which could then rule the striker out of pre-season and the start of next season.”

Kodjia has scored 19 goals for Villa this season

The Ivory Coast international joined Villa in a deal worth up to £15 million from Bristol City last summer and has kept the club away from relegation danger with his goals.

The next highest scorers in the league for Villa this season are Jack Grealish and Rudy Gestede — who joined Middlesbrough in January — with just four goals apiece.

President Buhari Should Take Medical Leave Immediately

Featured Image

President Buhari Should Take Medical Leave Immediately, By Falana, Ibrahim, et al.

When President Muhammadu Buhari was recently in the United Kingdom on a medical vacation, which lasted 59 days, many public officers said that he was “hale and hearty.” But upon his return to the country, the president disclosed that he had never been that sick in his entire life. Even though President Buhari did not disclose the nature of his ailment, he revealed that he went through blood transfusion.

While thanking the Nigerian people for their prayers, the president announced that he might soon travel back for further medical treatment.

A few weeks ago, the governor of Kaduna State, Mr. Nasir El-Rufai urged Nigerians to give President Buhari time to recover from his sickness. The plea was made after the governor had visited and presumably assessed the state of health of the president at the presidential villa in Abuja. However, due to the apparent deterioration in the president’s condition, he has neither been seen in public in the last one week nor attended the last two meetings of the Federal Executive Council. His absence at the last Jumat service in the villa has fuelled further speculations and rumours on President Buhari’s medical condition.

But instead of embarking on a regular briefing on the actual state of the health of President Buhari, officials of the federal government have continued to assure the Nigerian people that there is no need for apprehension over the matter. In defending the absence of the president at the last FEC meeting and other state functions, the senior special assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, Mr. Garba Shehu stated that “the president’s doctors have advised on his taking things slowly, as he fully recovers from the long period of treatment in the United Kingdom some weeks ago.”

As we join the Nigerian people of goodwill to pray for a speedy recovery of President Buhari, we are compelled to advise him to heed the advice of his personal physicians by taking a rest to attend to his health without any further delay.

Christian Benteke Trying To Convince Mamadou Sakho To Stay At Crystal Palace

Featured Image

Christian Benteke has revealed he is trying to persuade on-loan Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho to stay at Crystal Palace, although the striker admits it won’t be easy, reports the Evening Standard.

Sakho has been at Selhurst Park since February after relations with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp soured, and the France international has seized the opportunity at Palace, with his stock rising on the back of a number of fine displays.

Sakho’s assured defensive displays, coupled with Benteke’s goals, have guided Palace closer to Premier League safety, and the Belgium striker is keen to see Sakho stay put.

“I’m trying to persuade him to stay but it will be tough,” Benteke said. “He’ll have offers from other clubs, although our chairman and boss will try to get him to stay too.

“He’s made such a difference to us. First, we have to make sure we remain in the Premier League – but we’re not far away now.”

“Hopefully, he will come here next season. He is constantly on your shoulder and really annoying to play against.

“I think he would thrive in our team and, with all our creative players, he would get loads of chances.”

“He has scored 14 goals this season for the team that is bottom of the Premier League so that shows what a great finisher and striker he is,” said Smith.

Court Remands Former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido In Prison

Featured Image

The immediate past governor of Jigawa state, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has been remanded in prison till May 4, following an order from the State’s Chief Magistrate Court on Tuesday, May 2, 2017.

He was dragged to the court for ‘alleged’ incitement.

The former governor is standing trial on a four-count charge of inciting public disturbance, defamation of character, criminal intimidation and disturbance of public peace.

The offences contravened sections 113, 114, 392 and 394 of the Penal Code.

Sule Lamido: Police Arrest Former Governor Of Jigawa State

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Muhammad Lamin, declined to issue the accused bail and adjourned the case till May 4, for the continuation of the case.

This is after his counsel Yakubu Ruba and Felix Jones had said that the offences were bailable, wondering why the court did not grant the accused bail.

While Lamido was arrested by the police in Kano on Sunday for the offences, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Caretaker Committee on Monday called for the unconditional release of the former governor and other political detainees in government custody.

Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, the national publicity secretary of the committee, described the arrest of Mr. Lamido as “outrageous and anti-democratic” and not based on the frivolous allegation of “inciting the public” leveled against him.

“We are therefore calling on the security agencies in the country to release unconditionally, Lamido, Suswam, former Governor of Niger State, Dr Babangida Aliyu, and all other political detainees in their custody,” the party stated.

REPORT: Chelsea Beat Arsenal To The Signing Of £50m-rated Southampton Defender Virgil van Dijk

Featured Image

Chelsea are apparently “confident” they have won the race to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

According to The Sun, Saints have been tempted to sell in a £50m deal after Chelsea offered Andreas Christensen as part of the transfer.

Christensen returns to Chelsea this month after two seasons on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach.

The report goes on to claim that Arsenal have lost out on Van Dijk — despite offering to make him one of their highest-paid players.

Van Dijk has been tempted with more than £150,000 a week at the Emirates but he prefers a move to Stamford Bridge.

Although Gary Cahill remains one of the most influential players in the squad, the Blues are already looking to the future.

Van Dijk, 26, has emerged as one of the most consistent defenders outside of the top six  of the Premier League  following his move south from Scottish giants Celtic in 2015.

Christensen is now the sweetener in the deal and the talented Dane is up for a move to another top Premier League club.

Radamel Falcao Hopes To Sign A New Contract With Monaco

Featured Image

Radamel Falcao hopes to sign a new deal with Monaco.

The striker has excelled with the Ligue 1 side after two difficult seasons in the Premier League.

Falcao will have just a year left on his contract at the Stade Louis II come the end of the season, and though Monaco’s policy is now to sign promising youngsters rather than established stars, as it was when he moved there from Atletico Madrid in 2013, the striker hopes to stay on.

“Of course I would like to,” he replied when asked whether he wanted to extend his contract. “I feel really good here, my wife and daughters too, with the club and the city. We’ve adapted, we have a good social life and that enables my work to bear more fruit. I’m at peace here since the start of the season, and I hope to be able to continue living here.”

He added: “I feel very good, we’re happy and the results are good. Having said that, everything will depend on the club’s objectives. The ideal thing would be to take a decision that suits both parties. If Monaco retain the ambition of winning trophies in France and Europe — and that’s why I came here — I will be delighted to stay.”

He scored four times in 26 Premier League appearances for United and just once in 10 top-flight games for Chelsea, playing only one game in the first half of 2016.

“Chelsea was the most difficult time,” Falcao said. “In the middle of the season, I already knew that I wouldn’t play again, because the club had decided I wouldn’t play. It was a frustrating decision because I felt rather good and I thought that I could contribute something.

“I only had training. I was prepared in case, but I never played. So, I thought already about the following season and Monaco. Everything I did was thinking about Monaco.

“The whole of that period was very difficult, at work but also in my personal life, on a daily basis. But I always told myself it was part of my career. And in the end, I think it made me stronger. It allowed me to grow, to become more mature.

“I get the impression that what is happening to me now, the season we’re having, is a little bit of just deserts. It was hard, I battled and it’s a bit of a blessing. I have recovered physically and mentally. I made a lot of effort to get back to my best and I have the feeling I’m there.”

He added that the boxer in the interview, also listed the secret of his success as pounded yam, eba and egusi – all Nigerian cuisine.

The minister hailed Joshua for his humility, despite his success in boxing.

NAN quoted the minister as extolling his “undying spirit, coming off the canvas after he was knocked down by Klitschko in the sixth round to win by a Technical Knock Out in the 11th round of their pulsating fight”

Born in Watford to a Nigerian mother and a British father of Nigerian and Irish descent, Joshua made his professional debut in 2013.

Some of the early years of the 27-year-old champion were spent in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, before he returned to the UK halfway through year seven to join Kings Langley Secondary School.

While growing up on the Meriden Estate in Garston, Hertfordshire, Joshua was called ‘Femi’ by his friends and former teachers.

The Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Maikanti Baru, has revealed the Corporation supplies the “most reliable and cheapest power source’’ to Nigerians.

He made the statement in Houston on Monday while addressing newsmen on the sidelines of the 2017 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), an annual conference of experts in the oil and gas sector.

Speaking on behalf of him, Mr Saidu Mohammed, NNPC Chief Operating Officer, Gas and Power, quoted Baru as saying that several Nigerians were unaware that the corporation had long been part of Nigeria’s power sector.

“We (NNPC) supply about 1,000 megawatts of power from the two power plants at Afam and Okpai.

“These are the most reliable power plants in Nigeria and they provide the cheapest source of power for Nigerians.

“Before that we had been talking to our joint venture partners notably Chevron and Total to build similar power plants at Obite and Agura.

“But these companies are yet to build the plants; that is why we are in Houston to invite investors to build power plants in Nigeria,” Baru said.

The GMD said that officials of NNPC were also in Houston to invite companies who have the capacity and competencies to come to Nigeria to invest in the power sector.

He added that Nigeria’s participation in the conference was also aimed at increasing the nation’s gas reserve and to enhance the capacity of Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).

Baru said that the NNPC had a target to raise the production level of NPDC within the next two years.

He said, “essentially we want to raise the production capacity of NPDC to about 700,000 barrels with the support of other partners.’’
