Tottenham Consider Making Move For Bournemouth Top-scorer Joshua King

Featured Image

Tottenham have added Bournemouth striker Joshua King to their list of targets for the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Joshua King has found the net 12 times since January but is under contract until 2020.

It’s reported that he’ll cost Spurs £15million.

King started his career by coming through the ranks at Manchester United, thereby fulfilling the criteria for a homegrown player which require three years spent in England between the ages of 15 and 21.

Tottenham are on the lookout for new forwards with Vincent Janssen failing to provide reliable back-up to Harry Kane since his £17million move from AZ Alkmaar last summer.

Javier Pastore could end his career at PSG, according to his agent.

Pastore is one of PSG’s longest-serving players, having joined the Ligue 1 club from Palermo back in 2011.

He has frequently been linked with a move away from PSG during his time in the French capital but his agent Marcelo Simonian believes the midfielder, 27, could eventually hang up his boots at the club.

“[Pastore] loves France, Paris and PSG. And I can say that it is possible that he finishes his career there,” he is quoted as saying on TMW.

Nominees For The 2017 African Banker Awards Have Been Announced (Full List)

Featured Image

Nominees for the ten categories in the 2017 African Banker Awards have been announced.

The larger African banks still dominate the nominees list, with banks from Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa performing strongly across the board.

The Awards, which are hosted by the African Banker Magazine, will be held during the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) on Wednesday 23rd May at the Regency Hyatt in Ahmedabad, India.

Chair of the Awards Committee, Omar Ben Yedder, the Group Publisher and Managing Director of IC Publications Group which publishes the African Banker Magazine, said that he was once again pleasantly surprised by the caliber and strength of this year’s entries.

“Given difficult trading conditions across many African countries, we expected a slowdown across the banking sector in Africa. We were pleasantly surprised to see that the financial services sector has managed to maintain on the whole positive developments. It was also interesting to note the number of competitive entries in certain categories, notably financial inclusion, innovation and social responsibility. This shows how the banking sector in general is responding to the challenges that are facing the continent and the role they are playing in driving the continent’s transformation. The deal of the year category is always an interesting one and again showed the activity in the equity and debt side, although there was a notable slowdown in activity across both debt and equity markets in general.”

This is the first time the AfDB’s Annual meetings will be held in India, and more precisely in the Gujarat State, which is where Prime Minister Narendra Modi used to be Governor. As a shareholder in the African Development Bank, the Indian government offered to host this year’s Annual Meetings with the aim of strengthening economic ties between India, one of the world’s fastest growing countries with a population of 1.4bn, and with historic trading, economic and political ties with African countries.

The awards which are held under the high patronage of the African Development Bank are sponsored by the African Guarantee Fund, the Bank of Industry, the PTA Bank, the African Trade Insurance Agency and the Ecobank-Nedbank alliance. David Villa Signs New One Year Contract Extension With New York FC

Featured Image

David Villa has signed a one-year contract extension with New York City FC.

The 35-year-old, last season voted the most valuable player in MLS, put pen to paper on a three-year deal when he became the club’s first signing in 2014.

He will now remain part of coach Patrick Vieira’s side until the end of the 2018 campaign.

“Three years ago we started a very good project to build this amazing club and they chose me to be the first captain, which I’m still so proud of,” Villa told the club’s official website.

“When I look back to those first days in 2014, it’s really amazing to see how far we’ve come in such a short space of time and to know that there is so much potential for us to continue growing, on and off the field.

“I’m so happy here in this city and at this club, I am fit and I can do things on the pitch – I’m not ready to go to the sidelines.

“That’s why continuing here and signing this contract was a really easy decision for me.”

Manager Patrick Vieira added that he was pleased to see last season’s MLS MVP commit himself to playing at Yankee Stadium for another year.

“It’s really good news for me, it’s good news for the club and it’s good news for David, especially when you look at the way he’s been playing and the amount of goals he’s scored,” Vieira said.

“The club wanted to give him another year and he wanted to stay for another year. All of the parties are really happy and I’m personally really pleased that he will be with us for that time.”

Roma Legend Francesco Totti To Retire At The End Of The Season

Featured Image

Roma striker Francesco Totti will retire from playing at the end of the season, the club’s new director of football Monchi has announced.

The 40-year-old, who has scored 250 goals in more than 600 appearances for the Giallorossi, is to take on a new non-playing role.

Speaking as he was presented to the press, Monchi said: “In terms of Totti, I already knew that there was an agreement with the club that this would be his final year as a player, then he’d start as a director.

“Francesco is Roma, I want to be as close to him as possible. I’d love to learn even one per cent of the huge amount that he knows.”

Totti has been with Roma since the age of 13, making his first-team debut in 1993. He has gone on to make almost 800 appearances for the club, becoming their record goal scorer, and he is currently the oldest goal scorer in a UEFA Champions League match, finding the net at the age of 38 and 59 days.

Totti, who won the 2006 World Cup with Italy in Germany, has just four games of the current season to earn another deal, but that now seems unlikely with Monchi confirming that Roma’s all-time record appearance maker is approaching the end of his career.

Iyanya Performs With String Quartet, Wows The Palms Shoppers (VIDEO)

Featured Image

Mavin Records singer, Iyanya gave shoppers at The Palms, Lekki on Monday, May Day something rare and memorable that they won’t forget in a while.

It was another impressive stop in a series of pop-up performances to promote his new seven-track Signature EP put together by Temple Management Company.

A unique quartet with a piano accompaniment roused the attention of busy shoppers with sweet popular melodies.

Setting the tone for Iyanya’s entry, a musical ensemble of four string players – two violin players, a viola player, a cellist with grand piano accompaniment belted out contemporary tunes. It cut a picture of a perfect blend of classical and contemporary.

Within a short time, one-by-one, shoppers began to head in the direction of the music. Sucked in by the beautiful sounds, an excited elderly fan in her sixties could be seen with her phones in hand capturing the scene.

Like an entertainer, Iyanya’s entry was dramatic. The singer stepped down from his SUV into the waiting arms of two violinists and a filming crew. Making their way from the other entrance, an increasing crowd followed the singer as he made his way to the stage.

Iyanya’s entrance sent the audience into frenzy as he kicked-off with the hit song, Bow For You off Signature EP. He rendered songs from his new EP and old hits such as Up 2 Somtin, Hold On, Odoyewu, Your Waist, Kukere, lekwa ukwu among others. In excitement, some of the fans took turns in a dance duel with the musicians but the highpoint was when the elderly female fan challenged the singer.

“I had fun and you could see the excitement was mutual between the fans and I. Kudos to my team, Temple Management Company and everyone who put all these together,” Iyanya enthused.

Shoppers did not let the singer off easily as they formed a long queue to take selfies with the singer. There was also enough Signature EP free CDs to go round.

Unai Emery Almost Certain To Remain Manager Of Paris Saint-Germain

Featured Image

Unai Emery is almost certain to stay at Paris Saint-Germain this summer, according to the agent of PSG midfielder Thiago Motta.

Emery arrived in the French capital last summer after a trophy-laden stint at Sevilla but PSG look set to miss out on the Ligue 1 title in his first season in charge.

The Spaniard has also been linked with a summer switch to Roma but Alessandro Canovi, who represents PSG star Motta, says PSG are highly unlikely to change manager at the end of the season.

“Emery to Roma? I am sure that Emery will stay at PSG. He has a long contract and the esteem of the president. I would say it’s 99% [certain] that he will stay,” he is quoted by AS.

“We have seen fantastic things this season. Everyone remembers the last minute in Barcelona, but it was just a moment of madness. It will be difficult to win Ligue 1 this year and finishing second, for this club, is failure, but he must continue.”

Hull City Keen To Sign On-loan Inter Milan Defender Andrea Ranocchia Permanently

Featured Image

Hull City want to make Andrea Ranocchia’s loan at the club permanent, reports Gazzetta dello Sport.

The 29-year-old moved to the KCOM Stadium on a six-month loan from Inter Milan in January.

Ranocchia has been influential in the Tigers’ continued battle against relegation, featuring 13 times under Marco Silva, scoring twice.

Having been so impressed with his adaption to the Premier League, Hull are reportedly keen to keep hold of the Italy international, whoGazzetta claim would cost €10m (£8.5m)

Arriving on loan in winter, Ranocchia has not disappointed, building up a strong partnership at the back with Harry Maguire – who is also touted for a summer move – to help push the Tigers within touching distance of survival. He has even contributed at the other end as well, scoring twice in April at the KCOM Stadium against West Ham United and also a consolation goal at Manchester City.

A summer move away from the San Siro looks an absolute certainty for the Italian international and if the Tigers stay in the Premier League signing Ranocchia could be made a priority.

Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin has signed a new five-year contract at Goodison Park.

It means the 20-year-old will remain at Goodison Park until at least June 2022, and the forward has vowed to keep “learning and improving” after his breakthrough campaign.

“I hadn’t expected things to move as fast as they have and to have played against the teams I have done, so I’m very grateful for that and I’m working hard every day to improve,” Calvert-Lewin said.

“I’m learning every day in training and in the games, so I can’t ask for much more. It only feels like yesterday when I was signing for Everton, so to be here now is a great feeling.

Unpaid Salaries: Doctors Begin Indefinite Strike In Kogi State

Featured Image

Doctors under the auspices of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kogi have been directed to embark on an indefinite strike action from today following disagreement between the doctors and the state government.

It is understood that the disagreement was as a result of the failure of the state government to pay the outstanding salaries and arrears to doctors in the state.

A communique jointly signed by its chairman, Tijani Godwin, and Secretary, Zubair Kabiru, after an emergency congress on Tuesday in Lokoja, confirmed that the strike would commence on Wednesday, May 3, 2017.

In the communique, the NMA expressed disappointment over government’s inability to pay the doctors’ salaries and arrears as agreed two months ago, and wondered why it was difficult for government to fulfil basic commitments.

“We have presented our demands to government, but none has been met; we are left with no other option than to go on strike,” the association said.

The doctors said the suspension of the strike earlier embarked upon was to enable government to act and implement the agreement reached.

The communiqué read, ” In spite of suspending our strike action for two months to allow peaceful resolutions of issues bothering on, special consideration to all doctors employed in 2015 as earlier documented in the memorandum of understanding signed on the 9th of January 2017 between Kogi State government and NMA, failure to clear nine doctors after providing necessary documents as required by the screening committee, under payment of salaries and arrears of doctors that has been paid,  implementation of the new tax regime without commensurate promotion and stepping of doctors in the state civil service, and advertisement for employment of more doctors, despite inability of the present administration to implement adjusted Consolidation Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS), the government failed to reciprocate this kind gesture.”

The association further advised doctors intending to pick up employment with the Kogi Government to be “very cautious” as many of their colleagues were owed huge sums.

Manchester United’s Jones, Smalling, Pogba And Bailly Return To Training Ahead Of Celta Vigo Trip

Featured Image

Manchester United quartet, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Paul Pogba and Eric Bailly have all trained on the eve of the English Premiership Giant’s Europa League semi-final first leg tie at Celta Vigo on Thursday.

Skysports reports that the England defenders, Jones and Smalling, were spotted at United’s Carrington training ground on Wednesday, along with Paul Pogba and Eric Bailly.

Smalling and Jones have been out since mid-March, while fellow centre-back Bailly limped off in the 61st minute of United’s 1-1 draw with Swansea City on Sunday.

With left-back Luke Shaw also sustaining a foot injury in the same game, United were facing a defensive injury crisis.

The club’s manager, Jose Mourinho, had previously indicated that Matteo Darmian, Michael Carrick or youngster Axel Tuanzebe may therefore have to be drafted into the central defence.

However, he may now have more options at his disposal than anticipated.

Pogba also spotted at United’s training ground as he battles back from a hamstring injury to offer his manager a welcome boost ahead of their latest European adventure.

Defender Marcos Rojo and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic are out after both sustained knee ligament damage during United’s quarter-final success against Anderlecht last month.

Midfielder Juan Mata could make his first appearance since groin injury, while Marouane Fellaini is available despite currently serving a three-game domestic suspension.

Nigeria Vows To Revoke ‘Unused’ Licenses Given For Private Refineries

Featured Image

The Federal Government on Wednesday vowed to revoke the licenses given to individuals and corporate organisations for the establishment of private refineries but were not utilised.

This disclosure was made by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, while speaking on the sidelines of ongoing annual Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, U.S.

NAN quoted him as saying that he had had discussions with the Department of Petroleum Resources on the matter.

“I have spoken with DPR on the matter. Those who have not been able to move forward will have their licenses withdrawn,” he said.

DPR’s statutory functions included processing application for various licenses, permits and approvals across the oil and gas value chain.

Kachikwu said that the aim of giving licenses was to reduce the huge capital flight to fuel importation, meet local demand and look at possible exports.

The Federal Government under former President Olusegun Obasanjo had granted licenses to some private concerns to build refineries but only Alhaji Aliko Dangote had put it to use.

He said that his outlook for the year for the sector was to “have a robust relation with investors to increase production of crude to 2.5 million bpd and then to 3 million bpd”.

On incentives for modular refineries, he said, “Since they will be located in states, land will be provided and the modular refineries will be peopled around private sector, especially independent producers who already have the crude”.

He explained that investors would leave other countries to do business in Nigeria irrespective of seeming unstable business climate, because “Nigeria has the best returns on any investments in the World. The terrain is good’’.

“A lot of latitudes is given to investors to develop what works for them. Most of them know how to be resilient because they know the returns.

“Our resource base is huge. We have huge gas reserves, huge downstream opportunities.

“I don’t know of any country that has that much resource, that income generation. I think we can favourably compete with Saudi Arabia”.

Senate Confirms Stephen Ocheni, Suleiman Hassan As Ministers

Featured Image

The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Prof. Stephen Ocheni from Kogi State and Suleiman Hassan from Gombe State as ministers, following their nominations by President Muhammadu Buhari in March.

The nominees were confirmed after screening by senators at plenary.

The confirmation of the nominees followed a request by the president in accordance with Section147 (2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The duo displayed impressive performances today when they came before the Senate committee of the whole presided by Senate President Bukola Saraki.

The nominees responded to questions posed by lawmakers mainly on their respective areas of competence and backgrounds.

Saraki, in his remarks, after announcing the confirmation of the nominees, congratulated them for scaling through the screening.

He expressed optimism that with their performance during the screening, they would contribute effectively to the development of the nation.

“We hope their contribution to Federal Executive Council (FEC) will add value to the economy.

“The challenges are enormous and I hope they will carry out their duties to the best of their ability,’’ Saraki said.

Buhari had forwarded the names of the ministerial nominees to the Senate as replacements for late Mr James Ocholi (Kogi) and Mrs Amina Mohammed (Gombe).

Ocholi, who was Minister of State for Employment, Labour and Productivity, died in an auto crash in 2016.

Mohammed, Minister of Environment, stepped down to take up the post of Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Former Governor Of Niger Babanginda Aliyu Granted N150m Bail

Featured Image

The former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, has been granted bail in the sum of N150 million as ordered by the state High Court in Minna.

The erstwhile governor was dragged to the court for an alleged misappropriation of N4.57 billion.

Ex-Governor Of Niger Babangida Aliyu Remanded In Prison

He was arraigned last Tuesday on a six-count charge alongside Umar Nasko, the Chief of Staff under his administration.

The former officials were accused of conspiring and dishonestly converting for personal use, the sum belonging to Niger State Government.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is prosecuting the former officials, the misappropriated funds are ecological projects funds as well as money realised from the sale of 16 per cent shares of the state in the North-South Power Company.

Sule Lamido: Police Arrest Former Governor Of Jigawa State

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty.

In his ruling of the bail applications of the accused, Justice Aliyu Mayaki said:

“The first applicant is admitted to bail in the sum of N150 million with two sureties in like sum, who must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.

“The sureties must also deposit Certificate of Occupancy (C of O)of landed property worth not less than N200 million, situated within the jurisdiction of the court.

“The second applicant is granted bail in the sum of N100 million and two sureties in like sum.

“The sureties must deposit C of O of landed property worth not less than N150 million.”

Mayaki held that the EFCC had not provided concrete evidence to show that the defendants would interfere with justice, if granted bail.

He said that the defendants had no criminal antecedents, adding that they provided sufficient materials in support of their applications.

The judge then adjourned the case until June 12 commencement of hearing.

Everton Tracking Former Barcelona Forward Sandro Ramirez

Featured Image

Everton are planning a move for Malaga striker Sandro Rodriguez, according to reports in Spain.

The 21-year-old has scored 13 league goals this season and reportedly has a release clause of just £5million.

The former Barcelona youngster is one of the most exciting attacking talents in Spain and he would be a brilliant addition to Everton’s squad.

With the Toffees over reliant on Romelu Lukaku this season, and the Belgian’s long-term future still in doubt, Everton manager Ronald Koeman will understand the importance of bringing in quality reinforcements and Sandro definitely fits the bill.

Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla are also circling with Malaga now bracing themselves for interest during the transfer window.

And, with only two years remaining on his current deal, the chasing pack may be confident of prising him away from Malaga this summer.

West Ham Interested In Newcastle Manager Rafa Benitez

Featured Image

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is among the managers in the frame to replace Slaven Bilic at the end of the season.

Bilic’s job at West Ham will be reviewed at the end of the season, according to Sky sports.

Slaven Bilic has just over a year left on his three-year contract.

If Bilic does leave this summer, the names in the frame to replace him would include Benitez, Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic and Roberto Mancini.

Renowned foortball pundit Stan Collymore reckons West Ham bigwigs will be taking a look at Benitez.

He told The People: “It is certain Rafa’s promotion with the Geordies won’t have gone unnoticed elsewhere in the Premier League, especially at West Ham, where Slaven Bilic is under the cosh.

“The Hammers can offer Benitez London life, a higher profile and more money in the transfer market.”

He added: “If I were him, though, I would stay put at St James’ Park – but only if owner Mike Ashley opens the cheque book.

“If he does and Benitez adds to talent such as Ayoze Perez, Jonjo Shelvey and Dwight Gayle, then Newcastle fans can expect a top-10 finish.”

Marco Verratti Won’t Be Joining Juventus – Agent

Featured Image

Marco Verratti’s agent insists he has not met with Juventus.

The Italy midfielder, who has been at PSG since 2012, is reportedly on the radar of both Juventus and Barcelona.

Donato di Campli, who represents the playmaker, says PSG are unwilling to let him leave, while he says he has not held any meetings with Italian champions Juve.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “The president has said that he will continue at PSG and we take note, he is an important player for the club and has a contract until 2021, but we will make reflections. We will speak with them so that they can transmit their project [to us]. An exit? There is an obstacle, which is PSG, they consider him fundamental.”

Donato Di Campli said neither he nor Verratti would be talking to Juve officials when they attend the Serie A club’s Champions League semifinal first leg at Monaco on Wednesday night.
