Samuel Ortom, Terrorism In Benue State and Other Matters, By Michael Apeh

The seemingly extra ambitious governor of Benue State, His Excellency Samuel Ortom may be gold in the eyes of many, but let us remember the ever correct and tested statement; ‘not all that glitters is gold’.

This article was written by Michael Apeh. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Terrorism, foreign trips and absenteeism from important meetings regarding issues staring the state in its face is the style of governance adopted by the governor.

If we can remember, the notorious king of the forest, popularly known as ‘Gana’, was kept far away from Benue State in the previous administration of Suswam, only to surface from the forests of Taraba/Cameroon when he was invited by power thirsty political animals to deliver their party, APC, in the April 2015 elections.

Senator George Akume and Barnabas Gemade contracted Gana with the promise of a seat in the House of Assembly, which would be reserved for one of Gana’s several wives. Fair enough deal if you ask me, but was the promise kept? NO.

To compensate the now angry, wild and dreaded Gana, The new governor of Benue State handed Gana the cash cow of the state – Agriculture. Gana collected revenues of N30,000,000.00 monthly from agric produce and remitted about N10,000,000.00 to the State. Everyone was happy until things went south. Now his Excellency Governor Ortom wants Gana dead.

You may wonder why the romance between the governor and Gana went sour, but the reasons are not far-fetched.

After heavily empowering Gana with office of the special assistant to the governor on security and giving him two pickup loads of security men to guard him day and night, His Excellency has suddenly realised that Gana knows too much of his various shady deals.

Let us also critically look at the issue of amnesty in Benue State.

For the purpose of curiosity, one would wonder if His Excellency Governor Samuel Ortom can let everyone know how much this whole Amnesty sham cost the State.

You ask people/militants to surrender their arms with the promise of a better future, which is yet to be redeemed after so many months. Can we then ask what happened to the funds allocated for this course?

Where are the recovered arms?

His Excellency picked out Gana, empowered him with so much money to buy new sophisticated arms, and left the other militants hanging.

Now in a desperate bid to silence him, a rival group from Abaji was commissioned and paid heavily, which led to the killing of 12 out of 13 men who were in a meeting strategising on how to get Gana. Till date we are yet to find out who carried out those killings, but the answers seem to lie in the hands of Governor Ortom and Tewase (Gana).

In two years, so many of the governor’s cronies have been arraigned and charged with murder cases, for example the special adviser on special duties, Joe Kyaagba, who served three months in jail and was bailed by His Excellency and is still standing trial.

Another sad issue I want my people to look at is Ortom and the award of contracts in Benue State. In a country where corruption is the order of the day and sincerity meant only for fools, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the number one man of a state awards himself contracts meant for the good of the citizens, but then again for how long do we intend to continue like this?

We would expect that with the current song of change filling our airwaves, the governor of Benue State will at least lead by example. But No, the reverse is the case.

In July 2015, His Excellency Governor Samuel Ortom awarded a contract of N540,000,000.00 to Oracle Business Limited for the supply of 30 units of Toyota Prado SUVs for the government house.

Can we ask who owns Oracle Business Limited? Can it be the same company His Excellency set up with N2,000,000.00 a couple of years back?

Not stopping there, the insatiable governor went ahead to award a N4.7 Billion road contract to M/S Tongyi new international construction company Limited, a company supposedly owned by his private secretary, Mr. Stephen Amase.

The payments made to Mr. Amase’s company were done without the payment of the mandatory 10 percent handling charge.

It may interest you to know that this same company was registered in August 2015 with Ruth Amase, Dooshima, Sedoo, Tavershima, and Wuese Amase as its directors.

We also gathered that all printers in Benue State have refused to pay tax to the state government for the lack of patronage, no thanks to Oracle Business Limited, which gets all the printing jobs and more.

On a final note, let us remember that those who the gods want to punish, they first make mad.

Michael Apeh wrote this piece from Makurdi, Benue State.

Boko Haram’s Shekau Disputes Injury Claim, Vows To Start Fresh Killings In New Video (WATCH)

Featured Image

Shadowy leader of Boko Haram notorious group, Abubakar Shekau, has released a new video, denying the reports that he was injured in a recent military attack.

On Wednesday, the Nigerian Air Force had said two of its fighter jets had bombarded Boko Haram jihadists, adding that Shekau sustained injuries, while some of his men died as members of the sect gathered to observe prayers in Balla village, some 40 kilometres from Damboa, Borno state last Friday, April 28.

Boko Haram Suspect Remanded In Kogi Prison

However, on Thursday, May 4, in a 14-minute video issued, the elusive leader of the Islamic death cult claimed that he was neither attacked not injured in any air strike, further accusing the military of spreading falsehood.

He boasted that it was not yet time for him to die, and that he would carry out more killings in the future.

His words: “As I speak, today is Thursday 7th Sha’aban (4th May) around Zuhr prayer. You claimed your jets struck at our gathering while we were praying, killed some of us and injured me near Damboa. I don’t even know the town you mentioned.

“Gather all the photojournalists, the camera men and pressmen you have, let them assess this video to determine if I was wounded.

“But we are not worried. We are making this video to dispel your propaganda. Deceitful people end in shame.

“Earlier you claimed I was in Sambisa, now you said I was near Damboa road. You will never know my location. Allah kept out of sight because I believe in him and doing his biddings.

“Be patient, once my time on earth ends, I will die. Nothing will happen to me.”

He added: “To Buhari, Buratai and lawmakers you are shouldering a burden beyond your capacity. Your imagination (on our capacity) is more incredible than the tale of a hawk that lifts an elephant.

“So I’m alive. But if God wills that you will kill me, it is not surprising because many prophets of Allah were killed by infidels. I will be happy to die in the cause of Allah.

“Shekau is alive, Shekau is alive. I have not started killing in the name of religion yet. I will start in future.”

Reps: Bill Seeking N100,000 Fine On Anyone Who Abuses The National Flag Passes 2nd Reading

Featured Image

The House of Representatives on Thursday approved the second reading of a bill seeking to impose N100,000 fine on anyone who abuses the country’s national flag.

During plenary, sponsor of the bill, Rep. Sam Onuigbo (Abia-PDP), in the debate, said the bill sought to amend Flag and Coat of Arms Act 2004 and would make further provisions to preserve the country’s national heritage.

Before making this known, he lamented the high rate of abuse which the national flag is being subjected to, and urged the House to do everything possible to preserve it.

He said there had been surreptitious effort to change the national flag as many public and private offices constructed the Coat-of Arms on it.

Onuigbo said that the offices even included official photographs of governors, ministers, and even national assembly members in the designs.

His words: “It is important to declare that any addition, subtraction or super imposition outside the version designed by Pa Michael Akinkunmi in 1959 is not the Nigerian flag.”

“Section 10 of the Principal Act is being amended by removing the fine of N100 and replacing same with N100,000,” he said, adding that ‘‘also any person who flies or exhibits the national flag which is deconstructed, thereby creating an impression of using the national flag, where actually the flag is deconstructed shall be guilty of an offence against the Act.

‘‘Similarly, any person who uses the national coat and inserts same into the national flag thereby creating an illegal form of our national flag shall be guilty of an offence against this act.’’

RaysMuzik Unveils ‘For Me’ Music Video Featuring Sona and DJ Sean

Featured Image

British Nigerian musician RaysMuzik may not yet be at the forefront of the UK Afrobeats music landscape, but he is certainly one of the most exciting new prospects within the burgeoning genre. The London-based artist already has over 2 million streams across YouTube and Soundcloud, and garners support from the likes of BBC 1Xtra, Beat FM London and Rinse FM, among others.

For his new single titled ‘For Me’ and its accompanying visuals, premiered via Complex UK, RaysMuzik links up with fellow fast-rising UK Afrobeats star Sona, whose recent collaboration with Sneakbo, ‘Hurt Nobody’ has 1.5 million views on YouTube, as well as frequent collaborator DJ Sean, after their 2016 collaboration ‘Badda Man’ went on to break the 1-million views milestone on YouTube.

Produced by ATG, who has previously worked with Sneakbo, Afro B and Dr. Vades, ‘For Me’ is a lush dance floor filler, led by a thumping bassline and glorious drum arrangements, over which RaysMuzik’s infectious vocals and assured flow take centre stage. The record is further brought to life by its vibrant visuals, directed by Visionnaire Pictures (Big Narstie, Paigey Cakey, Bridget Kelly).

Speaking about the inspiration behind his ‘For Me’ collaboration with Sona and DJ Sean, RaysMuzik says, “the record was inspired by a video I watched on Instagram of some friends having fun on a Friday night. I just want listeners to be able to let their hair down after a long week of hard work, whatever their hustle or grind may be, and have ‘For Me’ be their weekend soundtrack”.

Federal Civil Servants Threaten To Down Tools Over Unpaid N200 Billion Salaries

Featured Image

The Association of Senior Civil Servants (ASCSN) of Nigeria has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if the federal government fails to address the non-payment of their N200 billion promotion, salaries and death remunerations.

The resolution was made on Wednesday during a meeting of the National Executive Council, NEC, of the association, in Abuja.

They also agreed to picket the Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office, which the workers believe, are sabotaging the swift directives by President Muhammadu Buhari to release funds to pay several arrears owed them.

The decision of the NEC of the ASCSN was read to journalists by the Federal Capital Territory Secretary of the association, Mr. Ojemhenka Isaac.

Punch Newspaper quoted Isaac as saying that the money approved by the National Assembly to pay their outstanding arrears was channelled to pay contractors handling unfamiliar projects.

The President of the ASCSN, Mr. Bala Kaigama, who doubles as the President of the Trade Union Congress, told journalists after the meeting that the ASCSN, an affiliate Union of the TUC, would collaborate with the NLC to carry out the planned industrial action.

He said, “Yes, the picketing would be done and I will lead it because this thing has taken so long. The idea of the payment of arrears of promotions, death benefits, first 28 days, started as soon as the President was sworn in.”

Kaigama stated that the picketing of the Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office would be followed by a strike, adding that the dates for actions would be worked out later.

According to him, the arrears, owed the workers, were not paid even when the President directed the Head of Service to work out the details with unions and to commence payment.

He explained that when submissions on the issue were made to the government, the government argued that there was no budgetary provision for the payment of the arrears.

Kaigama said, “We wrote to Mr. President; he responded positively and then directed the Office of the Head of Service to sit with us and work out the details. The details were worked out through the MDAs and our representatives at the MDA level and submissions were made to the Office of the Head of Service.

“That was done, then the National Assembly approved a virement but a chunk of the money was earmarked for the settlement of part of these arrears. But today, the explanation they are giving us is that the virement approved by the National Assembly has lapsed; that it is only capital projects that it (virement) can accommodate, it cannot accommodate overhead.

“In fact, except if the National Assembly intervenes now, there is a tendency that even this year’s budget may not capture these issues. And that is why we have decided that enough is enough. We are going to picket where we know the problems are.

“Mr President has directed; the delay we have now is between Finance and Budget. So, if we picket these offices, somebody must come out to tell us the truth so that the whole world will know where the problem is; and on this we stand.”

Boko Haram Suspect Remanded In Kogi Prison

Featured Image

A 27-year-old man, Adamu Anas Mohammed, has been remanded in prison on the order of a Lokoja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kogi on Friday over alleged membership to Boko Haram terrorist group.

The Prosecutor, Mohammed Abaji, had earlier told the court that Mohammed was arrested by security agents on April 6 at Obajana in Kogi, following intelligence report.

According to the prosecutor, Muhammed is a member of Boko Haram sect from Jimeta in Adamawa State and had been severally arrested for alleged involvement in terrorist activities.

Abaji further alleged that the accused recently moved to Obajana for undisclosed undercover terrorist mission being investigated by security operatives.

He said the offence contravened Section 16 of the Terrorist (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013.

Responding to the allegation with a denial, Mohammed said he used to worship with some members of the sect at NEPA Mosque in Jimeta, Yola.

The accused added that although at a point, he was approached for enlistment by members of the sect, he allegedly declined.

He admitted that he was arrested and remanded in prison for eight months in Adamawa over alleged membership of the sect but was later released.

Mohammed said that he was on his way to Warri in Delta but made a brief stopover at Obajana when security operatives arrested him.

He said he was neither on recruitment drive nor trying to propagate the beliefs of the sect in the state.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate Alhassan Husaini held that the accused be remanded in Koton-Karfe Prison pending further investigation into the alleged offence.

The judge then adjourned the case until May 31.

Messi FIFA Ban And Fine Lifted

Featured Image

Lionel Messi’s four-match ban for allegedly insulting an official in the World Cup qualifiers against Chile, has been lifted after a successful appeal.

Messi did not play in the subsequent qualifier against Bolivia, a match Argentina lost.

“The FIFA Appeal Committee has upheld the appeal lodged by the Argentinian Football Association, on behalf of the player Lionel Messi, against the decision taken by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, lifting the sanctions imposed on him as a result,” FIFA said in a statement on Friday.

“Following a hearing which took place in Zurich on 4 May 2017, the Appeal Committee has set aside the decision taken by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on March 28 2017, which, in application of art. 77 a) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), had found Lionel Messi guilty of infringing art. 57 of the FDC for having directed insulting words at an assistant referee.

“Despite the fact that the FIFA Appeal Committee considered Lionel Messi’s behaviour as reproachable, the former concluded that the evidence available was not sufficient to establish to the appropriate standard, i.e. to the comfortable satisfaction of the members of the Appeal Committee, that art. 77 a) of the FDC, according to which the Disciplinary Committee is responsible for sanctioning serious infringements which have escaped the match officials’ attention, could be applied.

“The Appeal Committee nevertheless underlines the importance of always showing respect to the match officials, stressing that such a principle is essential in football and any unsporting conduct that may be contrary to the principles of fair play cannot be accepted.

“In view of the above decision, the suspension for four matches imposed on Lionel Messi, which entered into force on March 28 2017, and the fine of £7,800 have been lifted.”

Rodgers: I’m A Better Manager At Celtic Than I Was At Liverpool

Featured Image

Brendan Rodgers fell short of winning the Premier League title at Liverpool, but believes he is a better manager at Celtic.

Liverpool came close to winning the EPL in 2013-14, but fell short. 18 months later Rodgers was sacked.

Now in charge at Celtic , he has rebuilt his reputation and has been nominated for the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year.

“Coming to Scotland means I’m a better manager now than when I left Liverpool,” Rodgers told reporters.

“There are two reasons for that. The first is that my players have made me better and the second is the quality of the other coaches, who have all posed different problems for me.

“I’ve been impressed by a lot of the guys up here. They might not have the facilities and they don’t have the money the clubs down south do but they manage to find a way to make it work.

“All the tactics and the styles are all different and I’m a better manager for having dealt with that and I’ll be better still a year from now.

“What you have in Scotland is an unpredictability with surfaces – and I’ve already said you don’t get good games on artificial turf – and that can affect performances and results.

“You also have more varied systems. And no matter how much or how little they’re being paid, the players up here always give their all and there is a physical aspect to that.

“We’ve all seen over the years that big teams can go to lesser teams and find it very tough and that’s what you get here every week.

“I’ve been impressed by how my players have coped with that.”

Jurgen Klopp Confident Emre Can Will Sign A New Liverpool Contract

Featured Image

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is feeling “quite positive” with regard to Emre Can’s contract despite talks still rumbling on.

The Germany international’s current deal runs out in 2018 and he insisted in March the impasse was not about money.

“I think it is no secret how much I like Emre. He likes the club and that is a completely normal situation,” said Klopp.

“We are in talks and there is absolutely no pressure, it is all good.

“It is two partners with big respect for each other. If we can keep good players that makes sense for development and he is one of these good players. I am quite positive.”

Emre Can is likely to keep his place in the starting line for Sunday’s home match against Southampton, while Klopp is “positive” that Philippe Coutinho will be fit enough to play after suffering a dead leg at Watford.

Klopp said: “We cannot be 100 percent sure because we always have to wait to see how he improves but, at this moment, it looks rather positive.”

Mark Hughes Insists Jack Butland Won’t Leave Stoke City This Summer

Featured Image

Jack Butland remains happy at Stoke and appreciates how much the club has aided his development, says Mark Hughes.

Some reports on Friday are suggesting Man City are ready to make a move for the 24-year-old England international, while team-mate Charlie Adam recently predicted that Butland would be snapped up by “one of the big clubs”.

“Jack’s an outstanding ‘keeper and I’m sure in the future there will be more concrete interest but at the moment it’s just speculation,” Hughes said.

“He’s only just got back in the team and speculation from before his injury has started again. From Jack’s point of view he’s concentrating on staying fit and well.”

‘It’s to be expected, but from Jack’s point of view he’s clear in his own mind he just need to get back fit and well and establish himself in the first team here. Once he’s over that process, then any further ambitions have to be looked at in the future.

‘He understands what he’s got here. He’s got a good club playing in the Premier League and has senior England recognition here.

Doctors Protest Against Unpaid Salaries In Osun

Featured Image

Medical doctors under the auspices of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Osun Chapter, on Thursday staged a peaceful protest in Osogbo over unpaid salaries and poor healthcare facilities in state-owned health institutions.

Armed with placards, marching from the association’s secretariat on Gbogon/Ibadan Road to the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park in Osogbo, the aggrieved doctors were said to have been chanting anti-government slogans.

Speaking with reporters, Dr Tokunbo Olajumoke, the NMA Chairman in the state, disclosed that the state government owed doctors two years arrears of salaries.

Olajumoke also said that government was imposing heavy task on the doctors in spite of the fact that they were not well paid.

The NMA chairman said the doctors could no longer meet their financial obligations because of the unpaid salaries.

Olajumoke said there were no drugs in all public hospitals in the state.

He urged Governor Rauf Aregbesola to ensure the payment of the arrears of their salaries without delay to avoid the wrath of doctors and its consequences.

In his reaction to the protest, Mr Semiu Okanlawon, a media aide to Aregbesola, said the state government remained committed to the welfare of workers, including doctors.

Okanlawon said the state government had developed the most ingenious formula for satisfying the needs of its workforce within the limit of available resources.

He said the health sector in the state had witnessed a huge improvement in the last seven years under the leadership of Aregbesola.

Two Cattle Rustlers Sentenced To Death In Kogi

Featured Image

Two trans-border cattle rustlers – Muhammed Lawal Jauro and Yusuf Sanni – have been sentenced to death for cattle rustling and culpable homicide by the Kogi High Court sitting in Okene on Thursday.

The convicts were arraigned before Justice Josiah Majebi on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide.

According to the prosecution, the offences are contrary to various sections of the Penal Code.

The prosecution had told the court that sometimes in January 2016, one Dauda Abdullahi made a report of a gruesome murder and theft of cows, belonging to one Haruna, in one of the farm centres in Okene.

He said that upon investigation, the convicted persons were arrested at Ajase-Ipo in Kwara State, while their leader, Awaijo Wetti, escaped and was still at large.

The prosecution further submitted that convicts who had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges, later pleaded guilty.

The prosecution quoted Jauro as saying in his statement that in December, 2015, one of his friends, Yusuf, a resident of Kabba junction, Zariagi, called him on phone and informed him that there were cows belonging to one Haruna, in  a bush in Okene.

“He further suggested that we should go and steal the cows. After that, our leader, by name Agwaijo Wetti, a resident of Tyre village along Okene-Auchi road, asked us to meet at the bush of Okene, which we did.

“Myself, Yusuf, Ado and our leader, Agwaijo Wetti, gathered and, with our cutlasses, went to meet the owner of the cows and all of us machete him with cutlasses until he died.

“Three of us then took control of the cows and took them to Ajase-Ipo in Kwara state,” Jauro was further quoted as saying.

In his judgment, Justice Majebi declared that the confessions were weighty and admissible in determining the case against them.

The confessions according to the Judge, are graphic and direct.

He said that the convicts stole the cows after killing the owner, Haruna.

“They went with the cows to Ajase-Ipo where they were arrested and the cows were recovered in the bush where they kept them.”

Majebi said that the not guilty plea earlier entered during the trial could not be substantiated because the admission of the commission of the said offence by the accused persons in their respective statements was clear, specific and unambiguous.

To believe their plea of not guilty, the jurist said “is to believe the holiness of a Bishop hanging a talisman on his neck.’’

He held that the prosecution had satisfactorily established that the death of the deceased was caused by the convicts as there was “a nexus between the acts of the accused persons and the death of the deceased.”

NAN reports that the judge sentenced them to 28 years each, on the first three count charges, and death by hanging on the fourth charge of culpable homicide.
