Buhari Approves Additional N35 billion For Niger Delta Amnesty Programme

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved an additional N35 billion for the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme to enable it fulfill its mandate.

Although the government approved N20 billion for the Programme in the 2016 budget, President Buhari has now raised the budget to N55 billion with a recent release of N30 billion.

There is also a planned release of an additional N5 billion later.

At the moment, the Amnesty Office has paid up all former militants the backlog of their stipends up to the end of 2016.

The release of the additional funds is coming after presidential level interactive engagements in the Niger Delta, where the Buhari administration enunciated a New Vision for the oil-producing areas based on the presentation made by the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, to the President when he received leaders and stakeholders from the region last November.

Subsequently, the President asked his deputy, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, to embark on a tour of the region.

This saw Osinbajo visiting all States in the region.

Besides the monthly payment of between N65, 000 and N66,000 to the former militants, the funds would also finance reintegration activities, including payment of tuition fees for Niger Delta students who are in post-secondary institutions at home and abroad, payment of in-training and hazard allowances and vocational training costs.

There are also empowerment schemes, self-employment support funds, including provision of equipment by the Amnesty Office.

Equally, the funds would also support the training of pilots, aviation engineers, technicians, and motor vehicles mechanics from the oil-producing communities.

The Buhari administration has reassured the Niger Delta communities of its unalloyed commitment to a faithful implementation of its promises made during the visits by the Vice President to different oil-producing communities

Other promises made during the visits are currently at different stages of effective implementation, including the opening of the Maritime University, integration of illegal refiners under the concept of new Modular refineries, resumption of all abandoned construction projects in the region, the Ogoni Clean-up, and several others.

On Friday, President Buhari ordered the Maritime University be opened before the end of the year.

The Vice-President heads an inter-ministerial group consisting of all relevant ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs, relevant state governments that meets regularly to drive the different initiatives and ensure effective implementation.

Boko Haram: Nigeria Secures Release Of 82 More Chibok Girls

Featured Image

Nigeria has secured the release of 82 more Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram militants more than three years ago, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

NAN quoted top sources in the government as saying that the girls were released today after negotiation with the militants.

‘They are now at Banki, a border town and will be flown to Abuja on Sunday”, a government source told NAN Saturday night.

“The story is authentic’, added the source.

The Bring Back Our Girls(#BBOG) Campaigners in a statement Saturday night also hinted about the release of the girls, although they said they were awaiting official confirmation.

“We have been made aware of the yet-to-be-confirmed news that a number of our missing 195 Chibok girls in captivity have been released through negotiation”, said Sesugh Akume, spokesperson for BBOG.

“It would be recalled that in October last year when the 21 were released, the Federal Government, specifically the Presidency said that 83 more were ‘on their way’.

“We await official confirmation from the Federal Government and a release of their names. We shall go to work to confirm the news to verify its authenticity, and communicate same to the public.

“Our hopes and expectations are high as we look forward to this news being true and confirmed”.

While Sahara Reports said 80 were released, and were at Banki town in Borno State awaiting airlift, Premium Times quoted the Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, who took part in previous talks to free the girls, as saying on Saturday that he was aware that “about 85 per cent negotiations had been completed last night”.

“Although I did not participate in the negotiations, but, I am fully in the know of what was going on,” Mr. Sani said.

Meanwhile, Vanguard is reporting that officials in the presidency are still trying to confirm the release of 82 Chibok girls.

Over 200 girls were kidnapped at Chibok Girls Secondary School on 14 April 2014, to the shock of many Nigerians and the international community.

The Buhari administration since it came into office on 29 May 2015, has been working towards freeing all the girls still in captivity.

The incident was confirmed by Alhaji Sahabi Mahmoud, the state Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in Taraba and Mr David Misal (ASP), the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state Police Command.

Meanwhile, the PPRO told NAN in Jalingo on Saturday that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Yakubu Babas has relocated to Takum to ensure that the crisis was brought under control.

Kelechi Iheanacho Urged To Quit Manchester City This Summer

Featured Image

Kelechi Iheanacho has been told to leave Manchester City after being restricted to a bit-part role at the club.

The Nigerian striker was a regular at the start of the season and hit four goals in mid-October, but has fallen down the pecking order.

Speaking to Completesportnigeria, Iheanacho’s advisor Olumide Olowu has said Pep Guardiola has offered more minutes to Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus.

“Guardiola seems to have his own players that he wants to play and you can’t expect a young player with huge potential to be wasting away on the bench,” he said.

Chelsea’s Midfielder Mario Pasalic Would Like To Remain At AC Milan- Agent

Featured Image

Mario Pasalic has said he is desperate to move from Chelsea, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato. The Croatian midfielder, who has won two caps for his country, is currently on loan at AC Milan – his third club since he signed for the Blues back in 2014.

His agent Marko Naletic said: “Marco is really happy at Milan, he wants to stay. That’s what he thinks, but it depends on many factors.

“It’s fundamental that he plays, that he be taken into consideration.”

Pasalic has been one of the Blues’ more impressive loans, managing to get regular football at Elche, Monaco and now Milan in the three seasons since he joined Chelsea.

He has particularly impressed in Italy this season, and Milan are apparently keen to keep him next year.

While another year developing in a good side would be appealing for Chelsea, they have to worry about his contract. The Croatian’s deal runs out at the end of next season, and if they can’t get him to sign a new one, they may be forced to sell him this summer while they can still get money for the talented 22 year old.

Fury Looking At July For Ring Return

Featured Image

Tyson Fury is set to return to action in the ring come July, as he is interested in fighting Joshua.

Fury last fought in his win against Klitschko in September 2015, while Joshua’s last fight is a victory against Klitschko on April 29.

The suspended Brit, who is shedding the extra weight in Spain, says he doesn’t need a warm up fight before facing Joshua , insisting he will beat the IBF and WBA belt holder with one hand tied behind his back.

“I’m out here for the foreseeable future, running, doing circuits, padwork, sparring,” said Fury, who told www.britishboxers.co.uk that a match-up with Joshua had been pencilled in for April 2018.

“I’ll be back on the July 8 Copper Box show headlined by Billy Joe Saunders. I’ll have a few comeback fights, two or three, while I’m waiting for Joshua.

“There’s no money in anybody else, I want ‘Mr Muscles’.”

“I can be the best Tyson Fury again,” Fury added.

“It didn’t slip away – I just couldn’t be bothered no more.

“But now there’s 30million involved. I was a shadow of my former glory, but now I’m on my way back. With me and Joshua, one looks the part, one is the part.”

Fury is not that impressed with Joshua’s victory against Klitschko.

“My win over [Klitschko] was a lot better, a better boxing display,” he said.

“He never hit me, but he hit AJ with a million punches and nearly knocked him out. He definitely did expose him.

“I hope [promoter] Eddie Hearn protects Joshua, because the first decent man he fights who’s not 41 beats him.

“Deontay Wilder, Joseph Parker, any one of these would beat him.”

I Never Told Alvaro Morata To Join Atletico Madrid- Diego Simeone

Featured Image

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has addressed a rumour that he asked Alvaro Morata to cross the Madrid divide.

Spanish TV show Jugones replayed a clip from Tuesday’s 3-0 Champions League semifinal first leg loss to Real Madrid that showed Simeone covering his mouth while saying something to Chelsea and Manchester United target Morata as the two passed each other near the sideline

I did not say that to [Morata],” he said. “I just made a joke as he passed by.”

Atletico’s loss at the Bernabeu make it very likely they will exit Europe’s top competition to their neighbours for a fourth successive year, even ahead of the return game at the Vicente Calderon next Wednesday.

Simeone’s future is also up in the air with persistent reports suggesting that his time in the Spanish capital is up.

Atleti are 10 points behind Real and Barcelona in la Liga and a 3-0 defeat in the latest derby left their Champions League bid in tatters.

Meanwhile, Simeone, who has been in charge of Atleti since 2011, reportedly believes his time at the Spanish capital club is drawing to a close, even more so in the wake of their 3-0 Champions League semi-final first-leg defeat to local rivals Real Madrid.

Naira Reacts As CBN Boosts Forex Supply With $389 Million

Featured Image

The retail segment of the interbank forex market received a huge boost on Friday after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) intervened with a total of $388.66 million sold to authorised dealers in that sector of the market.

Yesterday’s figures were the results of the bids submitted by dealers since Tuesday, May 2, 2017.

How Nigeria’s Naira Fared Against Dollar On Parallel Market

Speaking in confirmation of the numbers, the Acting Director, Corporate Communications Department at the CBN, Isaac Okorafor, said that $87.885 was for spot sales, while $300.8 million was sold as forwards.

Okorafor also said that the forwards were sold into three tenors of 30, 45 and 60 days respectively. According to him, the Bank sold $100.95 as 30-day forwards; $110.48 million as 45-day forwards and $99.37 as 60-day forwards.

While also confirming that the Bank continued with its intervention in the Bureau de Change (BDC) segment of the market to meet the needs of low-end users, the spokesman said the Bank remained resolute in ensuring that it supplies enough forex to genuine customers and in the process sustain liquidity in the market.

Okorafor, with this development, expressed hope that the CBN would inch even much closer to its objective of convergence of the rates in the interbank and BDC segments.

However, the naira depreciated to N391 to the dollar on Friday at the parallel market, as against the N390 it closed on Thursday.

This is just as the pound sterling and Euro exchanged at N495 and N420, respectively at the segment.

At the BDC, the local currency was sold at N362 to the dollar, while the pound sterling and Euro closed at N495 and N420, respectively.

Forex: CBN Bars 15 Nigerian Banks From SME Sales Window

Trading at the interbank market saw the naira closing at N305.70 to the dollar.

The naira, however, depreciated at the new investors and exports window as it closed at N383.19, weaker than N382.19, its opening rate.

Currency traders in Lagos said that the offer of 20,000 dollars to each of the BDCs on Wednesday helped to stabilise the naira.

The Spain international joined Juventus in 2014 and scored 15 goals in his first season, as he won the serie A and Coppa Italia.

He was linked with a move to Chelsea, but ended up returning to Madrid, where he has scored 18 goals in all competitions.

“Alvaro had negative thoughts in his last period at Juve,” Buffon told Real Madrid TV.

“We talked a bit about it because he I was sorry for him. He was a guy I loved a lot and wanted to help him, to give him security. He deserved the help of a companion and I have great affection for him.

‘Self-Acclaimed’ Pastor Arrested With Human Skull, Charms In Ibadan

Featured Image

The Oyo State Police Command on Friday paraded a self-acclaimed pastor, Alimi Isaiah, over unlawful possession of a dry human skull, a buffalo horn and charms.

The 55-year-old man, who claims to be the founder of the C&S Idapomimo Zion, located at Alagbado, Lagos, was arrested by operatives of the Federal Highway patrol of the Oyo State Police command during a routine stop and search.

It is understood that the suspect, who was dressed in long white robe, was caught around 10:30 pm on Thursday on his way to another branch of the church at Imini, through Ijaiye in Afijio Local Government of Oyo State.

While being paraded alongside other suspected criminals at the Oyo State Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, yesterday, by the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Abiodun Odude, the suspect confessed that all the items including gun powder, one Nissan Primera car with registration number APP 379 EP and other charms were found on him.

When questioned why he had the human skull and charms in his possession, Alimi Isaiah said:

“Some residents of Imini at Ijaiye, Oyo State begged me to help them check incessant robbery attacks in the area, which forced seven villages to be deserted. When they came to me, I went to one old man, who advised me to get  a human skull and other items  that would be buried in  the  area to keep the robbers away. My church is at Alagbado area of Lagos. All I wanted to do was just to bury these items.”

He continued: “My dad is a juju man (herbalist). I was going to Ijaiye when some policemen stopped me. They searched my bag and found this sheet of paper which contains my spiritual notes on how to use charms. They were reading it and I told them they had no right to be reading my notes. It was then they said they would take me to their station. My reaction prompted them to search other items in my bag. Then, all these items were discovered.”

The suspect, when asked the relationship between his title as a pastor and charms and skull found on him, said he actually wanted to use the skull and the charms to help his clients.

The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has reiterated its caution to Nigerians to disregard any announcement of recruitment or invitation to its interview.

The disclaimer was made in a statement by the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr Ndu Ughamadu, in Abuja on Friday.

Update on NNPC 2017 recruitment

According to him, the announcement is the third in recent times coming from recurrent fraudulent vacancy claims on various social media platforms purporting to have emanated from the corporation.

He said: “We are constrained to announce, once again, that NNPC is not recruiting at the moment.

”Members of the public are, therefore, advised to disregard any vacancy announcement on any online or social media platform as they are the handiwork of fraudsters intent on fleecing innocent Nigerians.”

He said the syndicate’s method of operation included deployment of various means, ranging from text messages to forged letters inviting gullible job seekers for non-existing job interviews, to extort money from them.

”To this end, we wish to once again appeal to members of the public, particularly unsuspecting applicants, to be wary of fraudulent vacancy announcements or invitations for job interviews at the NNPC Towers.

”Anyone who entertains such invitations or deals with peddlers of such invitation does so at his or
her own risk,’’ the spokesperson reiterated.

Ughamadu advised anyone contacted for the purpose, other than through advertisement duly placed by the Corporation in national newspapers, should report such invitations to relevant law enforcement agencies

EFCC Reveals Real Owner Of Famed Ikoyi Flat

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has revealed the owner of the now famous flat where $43,449,947, £27,800 and N23, 218,000 was discovered in Ikoyi, Lagos State.

Following thorough investigation, the commission has named Mrs. Folashade Oke, the wife of the suspended Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, Ayo Oke as the owner of Flat 7B, No. 13, Osborne Road, Osborne Towers.

According to the EFCC, Mrs. Oke made a cash payment of $1.658m for the purchase of the flat between August 25 and September 3, 2015. The property was purchased in the name of a company, Chobe Ventures Limited, where she and her son, Master Ayodele Oke Junior, were directors. Payment for the purchase of the flat was said to have been made to one Fine and Country Limited.

The EFCC report stated that Mrs. Oke made the cash payment in tranches of $700,000, $650,000 and $353,700 to a Bureau de Change company, Sulah Petroleum and Gas Limited, which later converted the sums into N360,000,000 and subsequently paid it to Fine and Country Limited for the purchase of the property.

The EFCC on Friday tendered the receipt issued by Fine and Country Limited to Chobe Ventures Limited as an exhibit before the Federal High Court in Lagos, where it is seeking an order of final forfeiture of the recovered money to the FG. In an affidavit filed before the court, a Detective Inspector with the EFCC, Mohammed Chiroma, stated that “Chobe Ventures Limited is not into any business but was merely incorporated to retain proceeds of suspected unlawful activities of Mrs. Folashade Oke.”

While urging the presiding judge, Justice Muslim Hassan, to order the permanent forfeiture of the funds to the FG, Oyedepo argued that the fact that Flat 7B, Osborne Towers was purchased in a criminal manner, made the N13bn recovered therein “extremely suspicious to be proceeds of unlawful acts.”
