Southampton Manager Insists Virgil van Dijk Will Not Be Joining Chelsea

Featured Image

Southampton manager Claude Puel has revealed that defender Virgil van Dijk will play for the club next season.

Southampton boss has declared the club’s intention to hold on to defender Virgil van Dijk – who has been out since January through injury.

“”It was a bad injury. But now it’s okay,” said Puel. “The surgery is finished, he can work normally, he can start the gym work and rehab to come back for next season… and with us.

“He is our captain. He is important for us. He is fantastic player. We wait until beginning of season to see him again on the pitch. He has a long contract and I think the Directors want to keep him”

Southampton conceded just 23 goals in the 21 Premier League matches Van Dijk was fit and available for, but were able to frustrate Liverpool in his absence by digging in for a goalless draw at the weekend.

After Keeping Birmingham City Up Harry Redknapp Reveals Talks With Owners

Featured Image

Harry Redknapp met Birmingham’s owners on Sunday night after keeping Blues in the Sky Bet Championship and expects a decision over his future to be reached this week.

“I’ve had a chat with the owners, I met them last night for the first time,” he told BBC WM. “I had a really interesting meeting. They were very nice, very good people and they obviously want to take the club forward.

“They’re not going to throw crazy money at it to try and achieve that, but they will invest. It’s just a case of wait and see. I’m going to have another couple of meetings with them and we’ll see where we’re going.”

“I think they have got good plans for the club without throwing a fortune at it.

“But I think they want to try and compete next year at the higher end of the league – and if they do it would be interesting.”

The vastly experienced Harry Redknapp appears to have told TTA they need footballing expertise at the club but seems clear they have the means to meet his ambition

“Football is a completely different animal [to business], they have got to put the right people in place, I think, to give them that support.

“Financially I think it is not a problem for them, I think the owners are very wealthy people.

“But it is sad to see so many great clubs struggling on at the moment.

“Look at the three teams that were scrapping to stay up yesterday – Nottingham Forest – European Cup winners twice, Blackburn – Premier League winners. The league is just so difficult.

“I think Villa spent something like £80m and they are halfway up the table so it is a difficult league to get out of for sure.”

Redknapp came to Blues less than a day after Gianfranco Zola resigned – and with only three games to go.

An undeserved loss at Villa Park in his first game, combined with Blackburn’s late-season rally meant Blues needed to win their final two matches to remain in the division.

Sunday’s victory at Ashton Gate was preceded by a 2-0 triumph over play-off bound Huddersfield.

Court Orders Police IG To Pay N4m To Four Nigerians For Rights Violation

Featured Image

Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, the Inspector-General of Police, has been ordered by a Federal Capital Territory High Court, Maitama, on Monday, to pay the sum of N1 million each to four men for violation of their fundamental right.

The men, Ozor Okolocha, Elvis Obiaku, Edward Onyenoknone and Imoni Micah, who are citizens of Nigeria, hail from Ase-Omuku in Ndokwa East local government area of Delta.

The respondents are the Inspector-General of Police and the FCT Commissioner of Police.

In his judgment, Justice Jude Okeke held that the respondents in the matter refused to renew the order of remand from the court which elapsed after 14 days.

“As compensation for the violation of their fundamental rights, N1 million should be paid to each of the applicants for the hardship and embarrassment suffered by them.

“The applicants were continuously detained at Keffi Prison without remand order, renewal and without charges preferred against them.

“This is a gross violation of their fundamental rights as provided by the provisions of section 35 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended,” the judge said.

The judge also held that the detention of the applicants and violation of their rights to liberty were not justified by the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

He also ordered that the respondents should refrain from arresting the applicants over the issues in the suit.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the applicants were arrested on December 17, 2015 and January 6, 2016 at their home town of Ase-Omuku in Ndokwa East LGA of Delta.

They were arrested and brought to Abuja by a police officer, Tony Alabi and detained at Keffi prison on remand order from an Abuja Magistrate Court.

At the expiration of the order, no renewal was made until April 5, when the suit was filed.

Tiv/Fulani Clash: 3 Feared Dead In Benue State

Featured Image

At least 3 persons were feared dead on Sunday in Logo local government area of Benue state, where former governor of the state, Dr Gabriel Suswam hails from, in a clash that involved suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The present Governor Samuel Ortom confirmed this on Monday while speaking with newsmen in his office in Makurdi.

It was gathered that the attackers had on Sunday afternoon attacked the Tse Akaa, Mba’abaji and Tse Orlalu all in Ugondo Mbanar District of Logo Local Government Area of Benue State when they were relocating to their base due to rainfall.

Trouble started when the villagers challenged the herdsmen who were moving their cattle away from the area, Nigerian Tribune reports.

It was learnt that the mass movement of the herders with their cattle raised fear among the villagers, who thought that the movement of the herdsmen was an attempt to reinforce and attack the village.

As a result of the development, the villagers were said to have challenged the herders which later snowballed into crisis.

Speaking on the incident, an eyewitness who identified himself as Terver said the herdsmen, without provocation, launched the attack on the villagers around 5pm while some of the villagers were coming out from Sunday evening service.

Terver, however, denied that the villagers’ action triggered the crisis, saying, some of the villagers were coming out of evening service when the herders began to shoot sporadically at them, and in the process, three persons died.

The source alleged that the attackers came from the Taraba axis, through Abaji, Mbamar, Ugondo and busted out at Akaa, shooting sporadically at the village market square.

Confirming the incident, the state commissioner of police, Mr Bashir Makama, said that six dead bodies have been recovered in two villages, adding that he would continue to update newsmen on the recent crisis.

He explained that the herders were moving out of the environment when the crisis erupted and called on the communities along the routes to allow peaceful passage of the herders.

Conte: Spurs Have An Advantage Over Chelsea

Featured Image

Antonio Conte insists Spurs have an edge over Chelsea and will be topping the table, had Chelsea not over performed this season.

Tottenham’s loss to West Ham means Chelsea need just six points from their last four to be champions.

A win against Middlesbrough and West Brom will secure the trophy for Conte’s men , but the Italian feels Tottenham have an edge over Chelsea in terms of progress.

“In this season, if Chelsea had not performed in this way, Tottenham would win the title without difficulty,” Conte said.

“Only this great season [from us] is pushing them to fight and, maybe, to win or not to win the title.

“I think that Tottenham have an advantage, if you compare Tottenham to Chelsea.

“Tottenham last season fought to win the title and Chelsea finished 10th. You can see our transfer market and Tottenham’s transfer market.

“This is my first season and I found a lot of situations, a lot of players. [Mauricio] Pochettino has been working there for three years and has changed a lot of players and is working very well.

“For me, Tottenham are a really strong team and it’s normal to see them fighting for the title.”

Gabriel Suswam: DSS Releases Ex-Governor Of Benue After 70 Days In Detention

Featured Image

The Department of State Service (DSS) has released a former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, from its custody, after spending about 70 days in detention.

Before his release on Sunday, Suswam has been in detention since February 25 on allegations of illegal possession of firearms and corruption.

The former governor was arrested over the items recovered inside some cars in a building in Abuja, said to be his own.

In a statement, the DSS had said that the search of the building at 44, Aguiyi Ironsi Way, Maitama, Abuja, led to the discovery of keys of 45 exotic cars, 21 Certificates of Occupancy, arms and ammunition.

The Service also alleged that a gun was found in his apartment during the raid.

In his reaction, Suswam, through his Lawyer, slammed the DSS with a N10bn suit bothering on violation of his fundamental rights.

However, confirming this, a chieftain of the PDP, Barry Idoga Odeh and former Chairman of Ohimini LGA of Benue State, Hon. Sunny Mark, told Daily Post that the former governor has been released.

“Yes, I just finished speaking with one of his closest allies and he confirmed to me that Suswam was released some minutes ago”, Mr. Odeh said on Sunday evening.

Suswam is standing trial before an Abuja Federal High Court over alleged diversion of N3.1 billion raised from Benue State shares in major companies alongside Commissioner for Finance, Omodachi Okolobia.

The case was adjourned to May 9 after the DSS failed to produce him on March 28 for trial.

Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman Admits He Considered Manchester City Move

Featured Image

Bayern Munich winger Kinglsey Coman has admitted he would have considered joining Man City if his future at the German club had become uncertain.

The 20-year-old recently made his two-year loan from Juventus permanent, and played under Guardiola at Bayern last season.

He told TF1: “I didn’t hesitate in relation to Manchester City or the coach, but because of my situation. I’m young, I’m in a time of my life where I need to play. If it wasn’t here, if it was difficult, I was ready to think about leaving.

“But I spoke to the president about the club’s project, about me, and everything was sorted out.”

Asked whether he would be at Bayern next season, Coman, whose contract runs to 2020, replied: “Normally, yes. Having said that, you don’t know what can happen.

“If tomorrow — I know it’s not possible — they buy Messi, Ronaldo and everyone and I know it’s going to be difficult, I could think about leaving. But normally, yes.”

Coman began his career at Paris Saint-Germain, and said that although his fellow academy graduates Presnel Kimpembe and Adrien Rabiot were now first-team regulars, he had no regrets about leaving.

“I’m very satisfied with my career,” he said. Today, I’m at Bayern. I don’t see why I should have regrets.”

Naira To Appreciate As CBN Plans To Pump More Dollar Into Forex Market

Featured Image

Plans by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to pump more dollars into the interbank foreign exchange (forex) market may shore up the value of the Naira against the greenback.

Naira Reacts As CBN Boosts Forex Supply With $389 Million

The apex bank during the weekend hinted that it would sustain its foreign exchange intervention into various segments of the market, thereby heightening expectations that the naira will appreciate in the coming days.

This became necessary following the inability of the authorised dealers to fully subscribe to various amounts offered by the bank on two consecutive times last week. Those two events alone sent jitters to currency speculators perceiving dollar glut as imminent in the market.

Speaking on the development, the spokesman of the CBN, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, confirmed the anticipated interventions in most segments of the market during the week, with effect from today.

According to him, the Bureau De Change (BDC) and the Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) along with other major segments would also receive the adequate intervention with a view to providing liquidity in the entire foreign exchange market.

How Nigeria’s Naira Fared Against Dollar On Parallel Market

Also at the weekend, manufacturers praised the CBN over the forex management strategy adopted recently.

The Director-General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Segun Ajayi-Kadiri, was quoted as saying that “the recent pronouncement of the CBN comes as a relief. If the intervention is sustained, there’s no doubt that we will have continued improvement in sourcing raw materials.”

The Naira appreciated marginally on all trading sessions at the interbank market, opening last week at N305.80/$1 and settling at N305.70/$1 at the end of the week.

But the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Rate Fixing rate published on the FMDQ website depreciated marginally last week, opening at N376.54/$1 on Tuesday and closing at N377.95/$1 on Friday.

At the parallel market, the Naira/dollar exchange rate remained at N391/$1 on all trading sessions.

2017 UTME: JAMB Registers 1.7m Candidates | Highest In Its 39-Year Of Existence

Featured Image

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the registration of over 1.7 million candidates, at the close of sale of application forms for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), making it the highest since its inception 39 years ago.

JAMB Introduces Remita To Ease Pin Purchase For Registration

In a statement issued on Sunday after the Board’s emergency meeting in Jos, Fabian Benjamin, head, media and publicity, said:

“We registered a number that has never been done in the entire 39 years of the existence of JAMB within a time frame; the highest we have ever had was 1.5 million. Nigerians were skeptical; we looked at the system and made adjustments where necessary to ensure a full proof process of registration and examination. We are always sure of our systems and will continue to expand our frontiers of thinking to transform the Board to an agency that Nigerians will be proud of.  JAMB wishes to state clearly that it will continue to be open in all its activities and ensure inclusiveness even in the areas of its finances.”

“The disclosure of the actual number of candidates registered is a clear invitation for the public to know what the Board has realized from the sale this year and we are not perturbed because we have nothing to hide in our dealings. Examination is all about transparency and an agency that conducts such a competitive examination must be above board in all its life cycle.”

Meanwhile, 633 centres will be used nationwide as the 2017 UTME starts on Saturday, May 13.

“Stop The Hoopla Over Buhari’s Health” – Tinubu Tells Nigerians

Featured Image

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has warned Nigerians speculating on President Muhammadu Buhari’s health to stop it.

The former Lagos State governor also enjoined Nigerians not to forget in a hurry that they voted overwhelmingly for him during the 2015 presidential election, stressing that creating tension with his health was tantamount to betrayal of trust.

He therefore stated that speculations about his health were unnecessary distractions to the President and were meant to pit a section of the country against another.

In a statement he personally signed on Sunday night, Tinubu said the prevailing economic challenges were not of Buhari’s making.

He added that the effect of the tumbling oil prices at the international market would not have been so biting had the immediate past administration saved for the rainy day.

The respected political leader made this known in a statement entitled: “Stop the hoopla over Buhari’s health, allow the president to do his job as he deems fit”.

The statement read: “Nigeria is a place of numerous challenges and the home of vast human potentials. Our greatest challenge has always been how to best direct our vast potentials so that we overcome the challenges that plague us.

“This cardinal challenge is why the APC was formed and why the party presented then General Muhammadu Buhari as its standard bearer. The people rightly chose him as their president, believing he was the best person to make Nigeria into a better nation.

“His electoral victory was historic. More importantly, like most Nigerians, I believed his presidency represented a historic mission to right many of our nation’s wrongs. I still believe so.

“The previous administration treated Boko Haram softly, appearing to view the terrorists as part of their political equation rather than a lethal threat to national security. President Buhari has gone after Boko Haram without condition and without fear. He has pushed them back, saving lives and giving northern Nigeria a chance to breathe again the air of peace and normalcy.

“My recent visit to Borno State to inaugurate projects opened my eyes to the progress President Buhari has made in the anti-terror war. An enabling environment has been created for Governor Kashim Shettima who has taken advantage of the peaceful space to initiate laudable projects, such as the provision of housing for and rehabilitation of Boko Haram victims.

“The previous administration treated corruption as its co-tenant in office. President Buhari has fought it with tenacity, equal to that with which he has confronted Boko Haram”

“We currently face stiff economic challenges. This is neither President’s Buhari’s doing nor choosing. The steep decline in oil prices caused the downturn which exposed our nation’s long-time failure to plan ahead by diversifying our economic base. It has fallen on the Buhari government to fix the immediate problem while also diversifying our economy so that we will no longer be as vulnerable to the price of oil again.

“His policies have begun to bear fruit. We are moving out of recession and toward the long-term reshaping of the national economy. Given the complex menu of problems he has faced, President Buhari has done well in a tough situation. While I seek not to diminish the hardship still faced by many of our people, we also must be cognizant of the important progress made these past two years.

“President Buhari has moved us from the path of failure to a path where we have a fighting chance to realize a better nation. Had we stuck to the ways of the former administration, our present situation would be worse than untenable. Those who publicly speculate about the issue of the President’s health must keep all of this in mind. Much is at stake. We owe a responsibility to be wise and circumspect in what is spoken into the public ear.

“We voted for President Buhari because we trusted his ability to make decisions regarding complex issues of state. If we can trust him to handle difficult matters of governance, we can also trust him to make correct decisions regarding his personal health. The President Buhari I have come to know is an honest and responsible man and leader.

“When he returned to Nigeria on March 10, he disclosed to the nation that he had been sick to the extent that he received blood transfusion and would leave for further treatment at some future date. He said he would follow the counsel of his doctors and there is every reason to believe that he has been true to their counsel. Many people have openly speculated about the President’s health. Some have done so for their own selfish reasons. These people shall be found out in time. There are many who have done so out of sincere concern for the President.

“These people should not be condemned for their heartfelt concern. However, they should be advised not to allow fear to ambush their better judgment and their courage. They should not give themselves to idle speculation. We should not buy into the myth of some cabal at work. Dwelling in empty speculation on the existence of some mythic cabal is not what the country needs at present. From what I can see, the President remains at the helm and his policies are being implemented.

“The President is also showing his belief in process and partnership by assigning more responsibilities to the VP, which included presiding over meetings of the Federal Executive Council, thus demonstrating his trust and implicit confidence in him. “Unfounded speculation serves no purpose other than to encourage those who would rather derail the President’s progressive agenda and who would divisively pit one aspect of this nation against another. Such chatter may foment division where there was none and this might come to impair the management of the affairs of this country.

“By fomenting animosity among groups that have heretofore been allied, those who hold to the bankrupt politics of yesterday seek to thwart the President’s mission while claiming to support him. Those who truly care about the President and the important work he still must do should not allow themselves to become the unwitting tools of these regressive forces.

“We must stand with and beside our President. The unfounded speculation around his health should stop. We must not covet fear and rumor but should engage our creativity and enterprise to help the President accomplish his historic mission. Our greatest energies should be focused on righting this economy so that it provides a decent livelihood for all people. This critical path towards economic recovery must be followed for the sake of our children.”

Bellew: Parker’s Camp Has Contacted Mine

Featured Image

Joseph Parker has reached out to Tony Bellew over the possibility of a fight, after retaining his WBO belt.

Parker had to struggle to a points win over Razvan Cojanu and Dillian Whyte is sure he’ll knock out the New Zealander.

But it seems the kiwi is eager to face British boxer, Tony Bellew, who broke his hand beating David Haye.

“I’ve punched with the right hand since it broke against the ‘Haye-faker’ so I’m back now, I’m ready to work again and every man and his dog is calling my name,” Bellew told Sky Sports News HQ

“I’m a guy in demand at the moment, probably the second most valuable heavyweight in the world at the moment only after AJ.

“I’ll sit down with Eddie Hearn this week but new options are coming to us every day. I spoke to people from New Zealand just last night after Joseph Parker had won.

“Everyone is saying ‘Tony Bellew will you fight Joseph Parker and become heavyweight champion of the world?’ The answer to that question is yes I would, but the salt and pepper has to be on my side of the table.

“It has to be on my terms not on his. As important as it is being WBO champion of the world it’s not as important as being a box-office draw and that’s what I am these days.

“I’ve got so many options and I just don’t know which one I’m going to pick yet.”
