Rooney Not Ready To Leave United

Featured Image

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has reiterated that he still wants to remain at the club next season.

The England international has not played a vital role for United this season, taking the back seat since Mourinho took charge at the club.

Rooney has been linked with joining the MLS and clubs in China, with his former club Everton also interested, but he does not want to leave.

“Of course you want to play every game. I’ve had to try to take my chance when called upon. I try to do my best for the team,” he told a news conference ahead of the Europa League semi-final second leg against Celta Vigo.

“I’ve been at this club for 13 years; of course I want to play football. Here? Of course.

“The more I can play, the better for me and the more I can help team. I haven’t thrown my toys out of the pram but I do want to play to help the team.

“Football changes. You have different challenges in your career. I would like to play more but I’ve tried to help the team on and off pitch.”

Rolling Out The Drums For Lagos @ 50 – Tayo Ogunbiyi

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

The flurry of activities marking the Golden Jubilee anniversary of Lagos State has, no doubt, been breathtaking. Since March 2016, when the Lagos State Government inaugurated a 10-man Planning Committee under the chairmanship of Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka to drive the event, a number of colloquiums have been held to highlight Lagos’ culture, tradition, history, economy, governance among others.

This article was written by Tayo Ogunbiyi. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

In line with the Akinwunmi Ambode administration’s all inclusive policy, all divisions of the state, namely Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island and Epe were specially focused on and appropriately celebrated. Each had a whole month dedicated to it with a view to highlighting their diverse socio-economic and cultural landmarks.

Similarly, documentaries stressing the Lagos success stories of 50 prominent personalities were produced and aired. The goal is to emphasize Lagos as a land of opportunities where hardworking and talented folks, irrespective of tribal, religion, ethnic and social –economic status could achieve their life’s aspirations and dreams. Among personalities whose Lagos’ narratives have either been aired or are to be aired are Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Alhaji Femi Okunni, Professor Pat Utomi, Chief (Mrs.) Nike Akande, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Chief Razak Okoya and a host of others.

The strategy of the Lagos State Government is to creatively deploy several events slated to commemorate the state’s Golden Jubilee anniversary to further promote the culture of hard work and success which are what make Lagos special. Perhaps more importantly is the fact that this is the first time in the history of the country that a government would make concerted, consistent, effective and measured efforts to embark on such sophisticated and impactful year- long anniversary commemoration.

Equally more significant is the fact that the year-long anniversary was tied to a monthly event that representatively revolved round the 27th of every month since May last year. For instance, the One Lagos brand was launched as the state’s tourism initiative on July 27, last year; a ‘Love Lagos Weekend’ Town Hall meeting was held in London on August 27, last year while a Lagos Corner was set up at the renowned Nottinghill Carnival last year. It is also quite significant to stress that Lagos was fêted at the exalted Toronto International Film Festival with eight films in September last year, thus becoming the first African city to be so acknowledged.

To further add colour to the Lagos at 50 carnivals, the maiden edition of the Lagos Street Party and the second edition of the One Lagos Fiesta were also held in December 2016. This is in consonance with the State Government philosophy of promoting tourism in the State through T.H.E.S.E which is acronym for Tourism, Hospitality, Entertainment and Sporting Excellence. Hence, the various tourism related events that are part of the Golden Jubilee celebration were deliberately designed to boost tourism in the State.

Though the 2017 phase of the Golden Jubilee anniversary began with the Lagos Art Expo on January 27 in memory of late Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi, who served as the co-Chairman of the Lagos@50 Planning Committee, activities lined up for the last 50 Days of the anniversary have actually been slated to take place from Saturday April 8 to Saturday, May 27.

The events from April 8 to May 27 have been carefully designed to essentially climax the Golden Jubilee celebration. Highlights of these events include theatre shows such as WAKAA produced by Bolanle Austen-Peters, KAKADU and FELA: The Broadway Musical. These therater events  ran all through the Easter weekend at Eko Hotel while a comedy show tagged: LAGOS LAUGHS came up on May 7th where 50 of the most exceptional stand-up comedians in the country performed. The event coincidentally took place on World Laughter Day.

Prior to this, a colouful and spectacular Boat Regatta which evidently highlighted the aquatic splendour of Lagos State had taken place in Epe, Badagry and Lagos Island simultaneously. On the long run, the Boat Regatta would form part of the holistic plan the State Government to promote and sustain tourism in the state.

As part of vibrant events being put in place to further make the Golden Jubilee anniversary a memorable event, the Lagos Carnival and a Parade of Colours across the Island and Mainland parts of the state as well as the Eyo (Adamu Orisha) festival are scheduled to hold on Saturday May 20 at the Tafawa Balewa Square. Equally, the State Government has been commissioning a host of projects across the state. This is in line with goal of the Ambode administration to improve infrastructure across the State.  Some of the projects include network of roads, bridges, transformers, street lights, monuments and recreation parks.

Some of the projects commissioned include; Ijegun-Isheri-Osun-Isolo Road, Idimu-Ejigbo Road (Phase II), New Market Road, Camp Davies Road/Ishefun Road, all in Alimosho local government area; Brown Road in Surulere; Adisa Ajibulu Road with Bridge and Kolawole Shonibare Street, Ajao Estate Road, both in Oshodi-Isolo local government area. Other projects include the installation of new transformers in Ibeju-Lekki, Epe, Eredo, Agbowa-Ikosi, Igbogbo-Bayeku, Ikorodu and Olorunda areas as well as Ojuloge Monument located opposite National Arts Theatre, Iganmu; Empowerment Monument at Sabo, Yaba; Drummer Monument at Ebute Ipakodo Roundabout, Ikorodu and Badagry Recreational Park among others.

Without a doubt, the Golden Jubilee anniversary is a landmark in the annals of the State.  It offers the opportunity to document and capture for posterity, in various forms, different aspects of the history and progress of the state as well as the contributions of its icons and architects. Being the nation’s acclaimed “Center of Excellence”, Lagos State has indeed lived up to its billing considering the diverse activities that have been put together to make the Golden Jubilee anniversary a memorable event.

Certainly, Lagos has good reasons to roll out the drums at 50. It has enjoyed and sustained an enduring political and impressive socio-economic culture. It remains the melting point of Nigeria as well as the economic and commercial hot spot of West Africa. It remains a pace setter that other states look up to for tips in the art of contemporary governance, socio-economic growth and political stability.

In-spite of current national economic challenges, Lagos remains economically viable as its IGR is bigger than those of 32 states of the federation while its GDP is bigger than those of Kenya and Ghana combined. If it were to be a country, Lagos would be Africa’s fifth largest economy.

While wishing the state and its people more successes, it is hoped that the platform of the Golden Jubilee anniversary will be effectively used to further be the State in positive and progressive political and socio-economic stead.

Nigeria Approves Creation Of National Trade Office, Introduces New Yellow Card

Featured Image

The Federal Executive Council (FEC), on Wednesday, chaired by Acting President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, approved the establishment of a national office for trade negotiations.

This is even as the VP approved a memorandum for the introduction of a new Yellow Card with advanced security features.

Speaking on the development with State House Correspondents at the end of the FEC meeting, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investments, Dr Okechukwu Enelamah, said that the office would coordinate trade negotiations by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) which were not properly done in the past.

“What we found was that this was happening in various ministries, departments and agencies with insufficient coordination and therefore, frequently, it had unintended consequences and costs for us.

“The cabinet decided that it is wise to establish a coordinating central office for trade negotiations, the Nigerian office for Trade Negotiations.

“It will be headed by a Chief Trade Negotiator of Ambassador rank that would then work with both the Economic Management Team and the cabinet.’’

The minister said that the office would assist in the coordination of the various trade discussions and negotiations.

Nigeria Introduces New Yellow Card

On the new yellow card, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole said that the former card was prone to abuse through issuance by unauthorised persons to people not actually vaccinated.

He said: “With this new card you cannot fake the yellow card; using a card reader; we can also document your vaccination status to know whether or not you have been genuinely vaccinated.”

“As soon as we start the roll out, we will tell the Nigerian community the date of commencement; what to do with the one they have and when it will be phased out.’’

Poyet Wants John Terry In China

Featured Image

Shanghai Shenhua manager, Gus Poyet has revealed that seeing John Terry line up for a CSL club is something he would love.

John Terry will be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season, after 22 years at Stamford Bridge. The veteran defender was sparsely used in the EPL this season.

The former England international was linked with a move to China earlier in the season, but nothing has been made official.

“If you asked me this question in December, I would say to you that for sure he’d be in China,” Poyet told Omnisport.

“The problem with this change of new rules, there aren’t many clubs looking to buy defenders. So that’s the only thing that goes a little bit against JT.

“But as a friend I would love to see him here because he’s got plenty to teach.

“I think that the older players can help the younger players in China to become better players, better defenders, and I think it will be a great example for the young defenders in China.”

The General Manager of Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation, Tunde Awolana; and General Manager, Ogun State Television, Dele Bolujoko, have been ordered to proceed on compulsory retirement from the public service of the state.

The Head of Service, Abayomi Sobande, in a statement on Wednesday evening said the retirement of the two affected general managers takes immediate effect.

“The most senior management staff of the two  government agencies are hereby directed to take over the management of the agencies pending further directives from the office of the Head of Service.”

Some birds close to the polity have squealed that their retirements might not be unconnected with the crisis rocking the station over unpaid four-month salaries, among other issues.

Meanwhile, it is understood that the state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has accepted the notices of voluntary retirement from the affected general managers.

Moses: Conte Just Put Me In Wing-Back, Didn’t Ask If I Want It

Featured Image

Victor Moses has revealed he was not consulted by Antonio Conte if he can play in wing-back, he just put him there.

Moses joined Chelsea in 2012, but couldn’t break into the first team and was loaned out to three different clubs.

However , since Conte switched to a back three, the Nigerian international has been a key man for Chelsea in the wing-back role.

“He didn’t say to me: ‘Do you fancy playing wing-back?’ He just put me in there,” Moses said.

“After that he just kept on encouraging me and went through it with me, what the position was all about, mostly in training. And constantly he was talking to me in training to make sure I was improving in it, talking me through it. I took that in and I didn’t look back.

“I have always believed in the ability that I have got. I have always known that I’ve got the ability to play in a big club like Chelsea. I have proved that. We have got a manager here that is willing to give everybody an opportunity.

“To be honest, I just wanted to play football. It was at Hull that it all started. I really enjoyed it and I took everything in.

“I kept watching the video of myself after the Hull game, to make sure I was in the right place, and after that I took it in and kept on improving.”

Manchester United Unveil New Away Kit For 2017/2018 Season

Featured Image

Manchester United have finally unveiled a new black away kit for the 2017/2018 season.

The design is inspired by the strip which the club had in the early 1990s. It is a mix of dark grey, black and white and has a crew-neck collar.

The three adidas stripes, club badge and logo are all in white. It will be worn by Jose Mourinho’s side for the first time during their pre-season tour

In a statement on United’s website, adidas said: “Manchester United fans of all ages will recognise the bold graphic pattern from the 1990-92 away jersey that defined football shirt design for an era. Connecting the past to the future, the new kit pays homage to the historic design, celebrating the rich history of the club.

“The graphic design of the original kit has been reimagined on a black backdrop with white hues, with the classic adidas three stripes, club badge and adidas logo all in white. A crew-neck collar gives the kit a modern makeover, making it a jersey that’s as much at home on the streets as it is on the pitch

“The kit features all the technological innovations of adidas’ jersey technology used by the world’s leading clubs, including breathable fabrics and mesh engineering.

“Alongside the replica jersey, there is also an authentic shirt available [as worn by the players], a long-sleeved version and shirts specifically for children and women.”

Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and David De Gea showed off the new version which Jose Mourinho’s side will sport as they look to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

The jersey is made by Adidas and is already available to order, but costs £89.95 (€119.95) for the authentic version, though a replica is available for £54.95 (€69.95).

Jesse Lingard Expects Paul Pogba To Improve Next Season

Featured Image

Paul Pogba needed time to adapt to the Premier League and will be more ruthless in front of goal next season, says Manchester United team-mate Jesse Lingard.

France international Pogba has scored seven goals and hit the woodwork on nine occasions since rejoining United in a world record £89m move from Juventus last summer.

“It’s obviously his first year [back] in the Premier League and it was going to take some getting used to,” said Lingard. “It’s the luck he’s had this season.

“We know he’s a world-class player, he’s helped the team a lot and I don’t see why he won’t go on next season and score the goals he’s missed this season.”

Much has been made of the number of chances created by Pogba which have not been finished off by his team-mates, and Lingard believes the United squad have a responsibility to turn them into goals.

“You see the power he has, the stature he possesses in midfield – no one can get near him and when he plays those through balls we’re always running for them,” Lingard added. “We need to finish more of them.”

Real Madrid Defender Pepe Not Close To Joining PSG

Paris Saint-Germain have denied speculation which claims they have reached an agreement with Real Madrid centre-back Pepe, reports Le Parisien.

Pepe’s contract at the Bernabeu expires at the end of the season and reports have claimed he is on the verge of moving to the Parc des Princes.

Yesteday El Larguero claimed that Pepe wants to continue at the highest level, with PSG close to reaching an agreement with the experienced centre-back ahead of a move in this summer’s transfer window.

However, Le Parisien claim sources close to PSG have labelled such speculation false, insisting they have not made a move for the Portugal international.

Pepe, who has won two league titles and two Champions League crowns during his time at the Bernabeu, has only started 13 La Liga matches for Los Blancos this season.

Lagos Court Grants 66 Kirikiri Prison Inmates Freedom

Featured Image

The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade, on Tuesday, granted amnesty to 66 awaiting-trial inmates at the Kirikiri Medium Security Prison.

The chief judge granted the inmates – who were being held for alleged non-capital offences – freedom during her visit to the prison.

According to her, the move was part of the efforts of the judiciary and other stakeholders to decongest the prison, whose normal capacity was for 1,700 inmates, but as of Tuesday had a total of 3,326 inmates.

The judge further held that she was releasing the inmates in exercise of the power conferred on her as the Chief Judge by Section 1(1) of the Criminal Justice Release from Custody Special Provisions Act, Cap 40, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2007.

It is understood that thirty-five inmates were initially scheduled to be granted amnesty by Atilade.

The figure, however, rose to 66 inmates after the prison authorities appealed to her to free additional 31 inmates in order to decongest the heavily populated facility.

The additional 31 inmates released comprised majorly suspects picked from under bridges and streets of Lagos.

While admonishing the freed inmates to “go and sin no more,” Atilade said the only way to reciprocate the gesture was for them to thenceforth live a good life and be of good conduct.

“The impact of this exercise can only be felt when you, the beneficiaries of this amnesty gesture, show that you are truly reformed. I wish you the very best and you should see this as an opportunity to start afresh.

“You are, hereby, released from this prison today (Tuesday) May 9, 2017. Go and sin no more,” she said.

“Our visit to the Kirikiri Medium Security Prison is to ensure the reduction of awaiting-trial inmates and to make sure that cases are dispensed judiciously and within the permissible time frame.

“I hope the beneficiaries have learnt substantially from their previous mistakes and I hope that as they are reintegrated into the society, they will not do anything that will bring them back to the prison,” Atilade said.

Nigeria To Start Refining Oil Before 2019 – Petroleum Minister

Featured Image

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, has reiterated that oil companies in the country will start refining crude on or before 2019.

It would be recalled, Kachikwu had in February stated that Nigeria will stop importing refined petroleum products by 2019.

The minister reiterated this to newsmen shortly after meeting with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and top management of Agip Oil Company in the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday.

According to him, the federal government was putting in place measures in the oil sector aimed at meeting the needs of Nigeria’s local consumption before the year 2019.

The minister further stated that part of the measures was the intention to set up a new Agip refinery with the production capacity of 150,000 bpd.

His words: “In the meeting we dealt with the issue of Agip investment in Zabazaba field and their cooperation with us in the repairs of Port Harcourt refinery.

“We reached an agreement that Agip will build a brand new refinery of 150,000 barrels capacity which will be located in Port Harcourt or Brass, they have accepted and preparing an MOU along this line.

“The effect of this is that oil companies operating in Nigeria will begin to migrate from only exporting crude and begin to look on how to start refining these crude so that we will be able to meet our local consumption.

“With this new refinery and along with other things we are going to do with the refinery in port harcourt, it gives us hope in our quest to try and increase our local capacity to produce every refined product we need in the country and to meet the time line of 2019. We are now going ahead to work out the modality with Agip”.

In the area of power, the minister said, “Agip has second largest plant which will be on stream by 2020.”

“This is to make sure they are not only just taking away crude but making other local investment. Total investment in area of power and the refinery from Agip is in excess of $15 billion.”

Earlier this month, the Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Kacalla Baru, had declared that the 2019 target set by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to exit importation of petrol, can still be achievable.

BBC Apologises To Emir Sanusi Over Incorrect Report On N6bn Emirate Fund Scam

Featured Image

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has tendered unreserved apologies to the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, over incorrect reports that he was under probe by anti-graft officials for alleged mismanagement of Kano Emirate fund.

On April 24, the BBC had published a report claiming that the Emir was under probe by the Emirate’s anti-graft commission for alleged mismanagement of Kano Emirate fund to the sum of N6 billion.

Consequently, the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission opened an investigation into allegations of ‘questionable expenditures’ running into billions of naira by the council over a short period of time.

However, in the apology letter dated April 28, 2017 and sent to Emir Sanusi, Mr. Jamie Angus, editorial director at BBC, said that an April 24 story quoting the Chairman, of Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, Muhyi Magaji, as saying that he (Sanusi) was amongst those being investigated in connection with alleged misappropriation of about N6 billion Emirate Council fund was “not correct.”

“The recording of the interview was passed to another colleague in Abuja office, summarised in a despatch and then sent to London where the online report was written and published.

“It is now clear from our investigations that the reports did not accurately reflect what we were told by Mr. Magaji, who had, in fact, made clear to our reporter that you had not been invited in for questioning and indeed that it was unlikely that there would be a need to invite you for question.

“Accordingly, the report we published suggested that you were under personal investigation was not correct and for that I offer my sincere apologies,” Mr. Angus said.

Buhari Approves Reconstitution Of Governing Councils Of 23 Federal Universities

According to the minister, the governing councils are charged with the responsibilities of approving the financial guidelines of the universities; determining the terms and conditions of appointment of the vice chancellors and principal officers of the universities as well as annually reviewing the universities’ budget to monitor their performance and assess the overall impact of their implementation, among others.

Mr Adamu also called on the newly inaugurated councils to focus efforts on broadening the Internally Generated Revenue Base, IGR, of the universities.

He said: “In view of the current economic situation in the country, I call for the prudent management of the scarce resources while efforts should be intensified to broaden the Internally Generated Revenue Base of each university.

“You should also ensure the judicious application of revenues so generated.’’

The minister also called on the council to live above board in the discharge of their duties by seeing to it that every act of corruption was avoided in their various universities.

“I call upon the governing councils, to join in this war against corruption. Any corrupt practises by councils including condoning cases of indiscipline by staff, is bound to have a destructive effect on the system and, on the products of the system. This must be avoided.

“You should also remember that governance and management are two distinct responsibilities in the university system. that distinction should remain clear in your mind. you shall set the policies. You shall define the directions,” Mr. Adamu added.

He, however, urged universities’ managements to support the governing councils as they implement their policies and decisions.

A Chinese business group is apparently ready to pay Morata a staggering £29.4million a year for five years, totalling £147million, but interest from Chelsea has persuaded him to reject the offer, according to Marca.

Asmir Begovic has put a decision on his Chelsea future on hold, insisting nothing matters but trophies at this moment.

The fitness and form of Thibaut Courtois has restricted Begovic primarily to EFL Cup appearances for the Blues, but the Bosnia-Herzegovina international insists his future at Stamford Bridge is secondary at present.

Begovic, speaking at The O2 ahead of WWE Smackdown, said: “My future will be decided at the end of the season. We’re preoccupied chasing two trophies, nothing else really matters besides that. Everything else will sort itself out.”
