Zidane: Bale Makes Madrid Better

Featured Image

Zinedine Zidane believes Gareth Bale makes Real Madrid a better team, and is hoping he is fit enough for the final.

The Wales international is in a race to get fit enough for the final on June 3, which will be played in his hometown of Cardiff.

Bale has been out of commission since April, but is back on the sidelines and could be fit for the final.

“He’s recovering and there’s time for him to be ready for the final,” Zidane told Madrid’s official website.

“I hope he’s ready before and I hope he can be with us more than anything. We’re a better team when he plays.”

Hearn: AJ Waiting On Whether Klitschko Will Ask For Rematch

Featured Image

Eddie Hearn says Anthony Joshua is waiting on whether Wladimir Klitschko will ask for a rematch.

The unbeaten British boxer stunned the world with an 11th round knockdown in front of 90,000 fans in Wembley.

Joshua also has the option to face mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev, but Hearn will prefer a Klitschko rematch.

“We have a mandatory challenger in Kubrat Pulev for the IBF. We have a situation with Wladimir Klitschko where we would like to make that fight again,” Hearn told Sky Sports.

“Fans and broadcasters would like to do that fight again and Wladimir is currently on holiday for two weeks and he will make a decision on his return.

“If that’s a fight that Wladimir wants, I feel like that will be next for Anthony Joshua.”

“Of course there are other big fights outside of his mandatories,” said Hearn. “The two champions. Joseph Parker, we just saw him defend his world title, Deontay Wilder.

“We have got a six, eight, 10-year plan with Anthony Joshua, so people are talking about all these super fights now. We want them, but we have also got to realise there is a long way to go.

“We have to box off these mandatories and the aim is to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, to collect all those belts.

“To do it we are going to have to be very smart, we’re going to have to do a lot of manoeuvring around and he is going to have to do a lot of winning in the ring.”

The IBF expect to make a decision about Joshua’s mandatory obligations by early next week.

Freed Chibok Girls To Be Reunited With Their Families Next Week

Featured Image

According to the Minister of Womens Affairs, Sen. Aisha Alhassan, the 82 Chibok schoolgirls who were released after being held for more than three years by Boko Haram will be reunited with their parents next week.

According to the minister, the parents will travel from the northeastern town in Borno state to meet their daughters in the capital, Abuja.

“Any parents that identified their children will be brought next week to see them,” she told AFP at the staff quarters of the Department of State Services.

The 82 girls have been staying at the domestic intelligence agency facility on the outskirts of the city since their release in a prisoner swap deal on Saturday after months of negotiations. The Islamist militants kidnapped 276 girls back in April 2014, triggering global condemnation and drawing attention to the sect. Fifty-seven girls were able to escape in the immediate aftermath. Of the 219 who did not manage to flee, 106 have either been released or found, leaving 113 still missing.

First Lady Aisha Buhari met with some of the Chibok girls on Wednesday. The girls, dressed in colourful traditional ankara print dresses, sang songs and danced in front of the cameras.

The minister added that the recently released 82 girls would be reunited at another facility in the capital with 24 of their classmates who were released or found last year. They will receive “psycho-social therapy” and “vocational training” to help them reintegrate into society. Campaign groups and families have criticised the government for keeping the previously released girls away from their parents but Sen. Alhassan said they were free to come and go from the centre. Most chose to stay in the capital, she had added.

The government’s goal is to have all the girls back in school at the start of the new academic year, she said without specifying where. “I believe from now to September, these other ones (the recently released 82 girls) would have stabilised and we will be able to ‎take all of them back to school in September.”

Antonio Conte Insists He’s Staying At Chelsea

Featured Image

Antonio Conte has been holding a press conference this afternoon ahead of Friday’s potentially decisive trip to West Brom and has insisted he’s focused on clinching the Premier League title rather than persistent speculation linking him with the vacancy at Inter Milan.

Rumours of a return to Italy with Inter have refused to go away in recent months and the sacking of Stefano Pioli has created a vacancy at San Siro.

But Antonio Conte said: “I have two years (remaining under) contract with Chelsea. It’s logical when you start the work in a new club the will is to continue to work, to try to improve your work in many years. For sure, this is my will.”

‘To arrive at this moment, in this position, to have this great opportunity we worked very hard for the whole season.

‘Now it’s important to be ready and to try to do this step, to win and then to celebrate together.’

‘The moment is very important. It’s not important the single person: me, or the future for the players. Now we must be focused on the next few games and try to reach this fantastic target.

‘I think it’s right. It’s normal to have a lot of speculation around my players and the coaches, different coaches, so it’s important not to lose the concentration and be focused. The moment is fantastic for us, and I want to transfer this message.’

Atalanta Reward Manager Gian Piero Gasperini With New Long-term Contract

Gian Piero Gasperini has been rewarded with a new contract for guiding Atalanta to the brink of European qualification.

The 59-year-old head coach left Genoa last summer to take control of their Serie A rivals in Bergamo, and with three games of the season remaining the Nerazzurri are six points clear in the last Europa League spot.

Gasperini oversaw a six-game winning streak in the autumn and they have beaten top-three clubs Roma and Napoli this term, also holding leaders Juventus to a 2-2 draw at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia last month.

A statement published on atalanta.it said Gasperini, who has also managed Inter Milan and Palermo, had agreed a new three-year deal with the option of a further 12-month extension, keeping him in Bergamo until at least 2020.

Leeds Fine Charlie Taylor Two Weeks Wages For Refusing To Play Against Wigan

Featured Image

Charlie Taylor has been fined two weeks’ wages by Leeds United after he refused to play at Wigan amid interest from Premier League clubs.

The left-back pulled out of the Leeds squad for the final game of the Sky Bet Championship season last weekend and boss Garry Monk said afterwards the club would adopt “a strong stance”.

Charlie Taylor attended a disciplinary hearing on Monday and it is understood he was hit with the maximum punishment.

The 23-year-old academy product is out of contract this summer and appears set for a move to the top flight, with West Brom the frontrunners for his signature.

Baggies manager Tony Pulis confirmed his interest in taking Taylor to The Hawthorns on Thursday morning.

“There are a lot of clubs interested in Charlie Taylor, we’re not the only club interested in him,” he said. “Obviously he’s been on our radar for a bit.

“It could go to a tribunal but our club would rather try and sort a deal out with Leeds if we’re going to do it instead of going to tribunal.”

Taylor has made 104 appearances for Leeds since making his debut in 2011 but signalled his intention to leave the club last July when he handed in a transfer request.

He added: “We don’t wait till August – next weekend we need an answer.”

“If he leaves it so long you have doubts. I like to work with players who want to stay. I don’t know, it’s up to the player, he needs to make a decision.”

Nigeria Considers Fresh Concession Of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Featured Image

The Federal Government is considering a proposal to involve the former concessionaire of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Bi-Courtney Highway Services Limited, in the funding of the completion and management of the reconstruction of the road, The Punch reports.

The proposal arrangement is expected to see Bi-Courtney and the new concessionaire, Motorways Assets Limited, jointly form a special purpose vehicle to source for funds, complete the project and manage the road afterwards.

It remains unclear if the deal, which is reportedly brokered by the National Assembly, involves an out of court settlement with Bi-Courtney, which had challenged the revocation of its concession agreement by the Federal Government.

It was gathered that the executive and the legislature finalised talks on the road at a closed door meeting held on Wednesday evening at the office of the President of the Senate.

In attendance, at the meeting, were the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun; Chairman, Bi-Courtney Highway Services Limited, Dr. Wale Babalakin; and representative of Motorways Assets Limited, Mr. Abdulrasaq Oyinloye.

Also in attendance, were the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Danjuma Goje; Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim; and Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, Senator John Enoh.

While Adeosun and Babalakin refused to talk to pressmen after the meeting, a reliable source, said the plan was to remove the road from the list of infrastructure on which the Federal Government was spending most of its resources on since the concessionaire would now look for funds to complete the road.

The source, who is well informed on the development but pleaded not to be mentioned, said, “Following series of meetings facilitated by the Senate, the Federal Government today agreed with two private sector infrastructure companies on funding and timely completion of reconstruction work on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

“They had a formal agreement on means of proceeding with the completion of the road within the most reasonable time and in a manner that is capable of creating a template for the future development of infrastructure in Nigeria.

“As part of the agreement, a new special purpose vehicle will have shareholders, including Bi-Courtney and Motorways, and the two companies are expected to collapse their current concessions into the new company.

“The Federal Government is expected to support the new consortium with financial instruments that will enable it to raise the necessary funding, the new entity must be operated to the highest standards of corporate management.”

The source noted that the objective of the concession was “to ensure that quality work is done on the road, which is said to be central to the nation’s economy, and that the work is completed in the shortest time possible.”

It was learnt that the Finance minister would take the agreement to the Federal Executive Council for approval next week, while the concession terms might be signed by the parties in two weeks’ time.

Some beneficiaries of the Federal Government N-power programme in Nasarawa have protested the non-payment of their five months stipend.

Armed with placards and leaves, carrying different inscriptions, the protesters marched for over five kilometres from the Lafia Branch of United Bank for Africa to the Government House.

Speaking on the matter, the Spokesman of the group, Abdulkareem Isiaka, said most of their members have not been paid since the programme started five months ago.

He said the protest was to draw the attention of the concerned authority to come to their aid by ensuring that they get their money as at when due.

“All those who are yet to be paid have already reported to their respective places of primary assignment.

“We have reported to the authority at the various local government areas, yet nothing was done about it hence the need for the protest.

“Maybe they are not reporting the case to the appropriate authority, but with this protest now the authority will be aware that something like this is going on,” he said

The protesters were accompanied by security agencies while no government official came out to address them.

Wayne Rooney Wants To Remain A Manchester United Player – But He’s Eager To Play More Regularly

Featured Image

Wayne Rooney says he wants to extend his 13-year Manchester United career beyond this summer but admits he is keen to play more regularly.

Rooney has started just 22 games in all competitions for United this season, and his agent flew to China earlier this year to hold talks with interested Super League clubs.

Speaking at the press conference before Thursday’s Europa League semi-final against Celta Vigo Rooney admitted his frustration at not starting more under Jose Mourinho.

But asked about his United future he said: “I’ve been at this club 13 years, of course I want to play football.”

And when asked ‘here?’ he replied: “Of course.”

“Of course you want to play. You want to play every game. I think football changes. You have different challenges in your career.

“This season I haven’t played as much as I would have liked to. I’ve tried to help the team on and off the pitch. I haven’t thrown my toys out of the pram but I’m a football player and I want to play football. The more I play, the better I feel I can help the team

“Sometimes that’s football. I’ve had to keep working and try to take my chance. That’s what I’ve done. When called upon I’ll try my best to help the team.”

Report: Antonio Conte Planning Summer Move For Dani Alves

Featured Image

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is lining up a surprise summer move for Juventus defender Dani Alves, reports to the Daily Express.

The 34-year-old has rekindled his career since moving to Turin from Barcelona last summer, playing a keep role in the Bianconeri’s assault on the Serie A title and a second Champions League final appearance in three seasons.

With the Premier League title seemingly in the bag for Chelsea, Conte is keen to bolster his squad ahead of next season’s title defence.

And, with John Terry set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, the Express report Conte has set his sights on Alves.

While he still is under contract, he is not short of offers from teams primed to play in Europe next year – although the Brazilian is said to to be excited about the possibility of winning a treble this year with Juve.

Aaron Ramsey Benefiting From My Change In Tactics – Arsene Wenger

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger has revealed that midfielder Aaron Ramsey is directly benefiting from his decision to switch to a 3-4-1-2 formation.

Aaron Ramsey has endured an indifferent season with the Gunners, but he has produced two of his best performances of the season in the wins over Manchester United and Southampton respectively.

He told the club’s official website: “He has a bit more protection behind him and has more freedom to go forward and get into the box.

“When he is at his best physically, he has a huge engine. Also he has a sense for the timing of his runs, so when he’s physically strong he can take advantage of his tactical knowledge of the game.

“You would say the system suits him well, and that’s what you want. Some players maybe suffer a bit more, but what is most important is that the system takes advantage of the quality of the players individually as much as possible.”

Losing To Tottenham Might Cost Us Champions League Football -Petr Cech

Featured Image

Petr Cech has admitted that losing to North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur could cost the club a place in next season’s Champions League.

Last month Tottenham ran out 2-0 winners at White Hart Lane, and it left Arsenal seemingly out of the running for a top-four place in the Premier League table.

Arsenal have since registered back-to-back victories – including a 2-0 triumph over Southampton on Wednesday night – but Cech has questioned whether their resurgence has come too late.

The 34-year-old told BBC Sport: “Every game we try to give ourselves a chance. We shot ourselves in the foot against Tottenham and we are aware we need to win all the remaining games to be in the race.

“We had a big game against [Manchester] United (a 2-0 win) and then here, where historically we haven’t done that well in the league.

“It was tough in the first half but then we found the opening and deserved to win.”

Pablo Zabaleta has spent the last nine years at City but with his contract due to expire in the summer.

However, according to The Sun, the full-back has been offered the opportunity to link up with the Hammers on a deal worth £100,000 per week.
