Chelsea Crowned Premier League Champions After West Brom Victory

Chelsea have won the English Premier League title after defeating West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at the Hawthorns on Friday night, May 12, 2017.

Tonight, Antonio Conte led the Stamford Bridge side to glory with two matches to spare – the sixth time that the Blues have been crowned English champions

Chelsea had to wait till the 82nd minute before Michy Batshuayi scored the goal that gave them the vital three points, meaning they hold an unassailable 10-point advantage over Tottenham.

West Brom gave Chelsea a good challenge in the encounter, and the hosts would have scored in the 15th minute, but Chris Brunt’s efforts was saved by Thibaut Courtois.

It is the sixth time that the Stamford Bridge side have won England’s top flight and the fourth time since 2004-05 that they have claimed the Premier League title.

Conte’s men have been recognised individually as well as collectively, with summer signing N’Golo Kante winning the PFA Player of the Year award and also claiming the Football Writer’s prize. His team mate Eden Hazard finished as runner-up in both categories.

The Blues can yet complete a league and cup double as they face Arsenal on May 27 at Wembley in the FA Cup final.

Chelsea fans can also look forward to European nights once more, with the Champions League set to return next season.

Mourinho: De Gea Will Miss EL Final

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho will stick with Sergio Romero as his Europa League keeper, insisting De Gea won’t play the final.

The Argentine has started United’s last 10 Europa League matches keeping six clean sheets.

But with Mourinho looking to win the trophy, many has suggested De Gea should man the sticks, but the Portuguese is sticking with Romero.

“They are two fantastic goalkeepers. I never saw, in all my career, two goalkeepers be such friends,” he said after Thursday’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, which saw United scrape into the final to face Ajax.

“You always have a little bit of rivalry, especially if you are both the same kind of level. We’re speaking about the Argentina national goalkeeper and Spain national goalkeeper.

“They support each other all the time. I never saw a bad face, I only saw them support each other. I think it’s fair that Sergio plays the final and David accepts that. Especially because he played two Europa League matches, so if we win, he wins the trophy.

“If everything goes normal and there are no problems, Sergio plays the final.”

Osinbajo Formally Inaugurates Investment Authority Board

Featured Image

Nigeria’s Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, has formally inaugurated the board of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, May 12, 2017.

Prof. Osinbajo while inaugurating the board said despite the fiscally constrained environment, the present administration had been able to increase the federal government’s commitment to the NSIA by 50 percent, committing an additional $500 million.

The acting president also stated that though the federal government is committed to saving, the actual charge with this additional capital is investment.

He said as the NSIA moved to the second phase of its existence, the expectation was that the committed capital would be deployed into projects that were in line with the administration’s key priority areas like infrastructure and agriculture.

He said: “For example, we expect prompt action on the commodities exchange, a vital component of our agricultural reform effort. I am pleased to note your participation with the governments of Delta and Akwa Ibom on the modular refineries project. They are several key projects that would unlock the economic potential of our country and get us faster out of where we are today.”

Osinbajo further charged the board to fundamentally improve the performance of the authority and strengthen its operations, saying the National Economic Council, the NSIA’s governing council and all Nigerians would hold them accountable to this mandate.

In conclusion, the acting president said the board would be periodically required to provide evidence of “your stewardship to the governing council where your performance, of cause, will be assessed.”

Holger Badstuber To Leave Bayern Munich At The End Of The Season

Featured Image

Defender Holger Badstuber will leave Bayern Munich when his contract expires in the summer, the club have announced.

The Germany international, whose career has been plagued by injury in recent years, has spent the second half of this season on loan at Schalke but will not be joining the club on a permanent basis.

“We will not sign Badstuber on a permanent deal,” sporting director Christian Heidel said at a news conference. “The coach discussed things with Holger on Wednesday. We will say farewell to him on Saturday [at home to Hamburg].”

And Bayern said the 28-year-old would now likely seek a move abroad.

“It was clear from the beginning that Holger Badstuber wants to look for a new challenge, probably overseas, after his loan to Schalke,” Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club’s official website.

Badstuber’s career has been plagued by injuries since he graduated from the Bayern youth academy. He made his league debut for the club in August 2009 and went on to start 33 games in that season’s title-winning campaign.

In 2015 Badstuber tore a thigh muscle and in February 2016 he broke his ankle, limiting him to just 18 league appearances for Bayern over the past three seasons.

He has started 11 games for Schalke since joining the Royal Blues during the winter break.

Burnley Striker Andre Gray Could Quit Club This Summer

Featured Image

Burnley may be willing to cash in on striker Andre Gray

The 25-year-old has one year left on his current deal at Turf Moor, worth £30,000-a-week.

But the Mail claim Gray could demand much more than his current wage if he were to agree a new contract with the Clarets.

Andre Gray is said to be frustrated by Dyche’s preference of Ashley Barnes and Sam Vokes up front that has seen him relegated to the bench for three of the last four games.

The former Brentford forward revealed he would talk about his future with the club in the summer.

Gray said: “It’s always been a matter of getting the season out of the way.

“We had a big job to do and it’s something that we didn’t want to get in between the season and contract talks.

“It will get sorted at the end of the season I’m sure.”

Jose Mourinho Worried About Eric Bailly’s Europa League Red Card

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho has expressed concern over losing Eric Bailly for the Europa League final due to suspension.

Eric Bailly was sent off in the Europa League semi-final second leg with Celta Vigo for his part in a scuffle with Facundo Roncaglia.

Man United hung on for a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford to win the tie 2-1 on aggregate and reach the final of the competition, but Bailly will be banned for the showpiece against Ajax.

Mourinho told BT Sport: “I didn’t see the red card incident but Eric Bailly was phenomenal. The game was emotional for everyone. Some kept control better than others.

“Facundo Roncaglia is not new in these situations, Bailly was probably naive. We now lose a very important player for the final, and we don’t have many.

“Ajax will be difficult, they are a young team, strong team, they finish the league this weekend and will have 12 days to recover. We have three matches in that time.”

The final of the Europa League takes place in Stockholm on Wednesday, May 24.

Leicester City Prepared To Break The Bank For Star Players

Featured Image

Leicester could break their transfer record again as they seek a Champions League return.

The outgoing champions are eyeing European qualification next season with boss Craig Shakespeare admitting they must aim high.

After winning the Premier League the Foxes broke their transfer record three times last summer, with Islam Slimani the most expensive signing at £30m.

Shakespeare attended a recruitment meeting on Thursday and confirmed the Foxes, linked with Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson, would be prepared to break the bank again.

He said: “There could be (a chance). You look at the players out there, the Premier League is the place to play.

“A lot of players will want to come to this country, But it’s down to the individual clubs to sort their own recruitment out. The squad doesn’t need major surgery, I think it’ll be minimal. I expect a few going and a few coming.”

Eden Hazard Admits He’s Working Very Hard To Become World’s Best

Featured Image
Eden Hazard has admitted that he hopes to take the next step in his career next season by landing the 2018 Ballon d’Or award.

Eden Hazard was crowned as the PFA Player of the Year in 2015 after helping Chelsea to the Premier League title, while finishing behind teammate N’Golo Kante this time around.

Hazard acknowledges that breaking Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi‘s decade-long dominance will be far from easy, but is adamant that he does not necessarily have to move to La Liga to fulfil his own personal ambition.

“I hope to win the Ballon d’Or one day,” he told Sky Sports News. “It’s in my mind. If I don’t, it won’t be a problem. I try to make a good career – the best I can – but I think some other players deserve to win it also.

“When Ronaldo and Messi retire, maybe it will be another couple of players like Neymar, Paulo Dybala orAntoine Griezmann, who knows? We will see. It’s not something I think too much about.

“Could I win it? If I play next season, we win the Champions League and I win the World Cup with Belgium, why not? In the last 10 years, the Ballon d’Or winners play in Spain, but it’s not automatic. If a player is better in England, he will win it.”

Craig Shakespeare Tells His Leicester City Stars- ‘Honor Your Contracts’

Featured Image

Craig Shakespeare wants his Leicester stars to stay, irrespective of any verbal gentlemen’s agreements they may have with the club.

Riyad Mahrez, Kasper Schmeichel and Jamie Vardy are all set to be in demand again this summer with the Foxes now without Champions League football.

But Shakespeare, who hopes to be in charge next season has no intention of parting with his most-prized assets.

“If they are under contract, whether it is gentlemen’s agreements or not, it is down to discussions,” he said.

“From my point of view I don’t want to lose anybody. You talk to the players, you make sure they are wanted and you believe in them.

“There might be third parties get involved and you have to be aware of that but ultimately it is the player’s contracts that are there to be honoured.”

The Lagos State government on Thursday, launched free public WiFi at parks and gardens in its resolve to achieve its smart mega city status.

The State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode said the provision of the free WiFi was part of the efforts by his administration to make the state work for all its citizens.

The Governor was represented by the state Commissioner for Science and Technology, Olufemi Odubiyi, who stressed that the increase in patronage of parks and gardens spread across the state has prompted the government to equip the centres with free WiFi to serve the needs of visitors to the parks.

“Parks and Gardens are established to provide conducive environment for recreation and relaxation activities. As you relax and enjoy the recreational facilities in these parks, we are making it possible for you to access your mail, browse and search the internet on your tablets, smart phones and laptops via a reliable public WiFi”.

Prominent Islamic Cleric Arraigned For ‘Insulting’ Emir Sanusi

Featured Image

The Kano State Police Command has arraigned a renowned Islamic cleric, Shiek Nasiru Bazallah, before a Magistrate Court in the state for allegedly insulting the Emir of Kano, Mallam Lamido Sanusi.

Bazallah is being accused of attempting to use his utterances to provoke a breach of peace.

According to the prosecution, the cleric incited disturbance and attempted to defame the character of the monarch, contrary to Section 114, 392 and 399 of the penal code.

First Information Report stated that on May 8, 2017, Emir Sanusi lodged a complaint to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, alleging that the defendant, on March 20, 2017, acted in a manner which defamed the monarch’s character.

The report further alleged that the Islamic scholar gathered his adherents at Goron Dutse quarters, where he made statements to incite disturbance and defame the monarch.

Reacting to this, the defendant said the allegations levelled against him were false, even as he pleaded with the court to grant him bail.

This is just as the police prosecutor, Inspector Haziel Ledapwa, told the court that investigation was still in progress.

In his ruling, the presiding magistrate, Hassan Fagge, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1m, including two reliable sureties.

Fagge held that the two sureties must be directors at any federal ministry.

Nigeria’s Oil Production Increases By 274,000bpd In April

Featured Image

Nigeria’s crude oil production rose by 274,000 barrels per day in April, the biggest increase it has witnessed among its peers in the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

However, the increase was not enough to help the country dislodge Angola as Africa’s top oil producer, a status the continent’s most populous nation lost in recent months.

While revealing its Monthly Oil Market Report for May on Thursday, OPEC placed Nigeria’s output at 1.484 million bpd for April, from 1.21 million bpd in the previous month, which was based on direct communication.

While Angola saw its oil output decrease slightly to 1.651 million bpd in April, from 1.652 million bpd in the previous month, the OPEC report added.

Saudi Arabia, the biggest producer in the group, recorded the second largest increase in April as it produced 9.946 million bpd, down from 9.9 million bpd in March.

The United Arab Emirates’ production increased by 15,000 bpd to 2.988 million bpd in April, while Kuwait’s rose by 10,000 bpd to 2.710 million bpd.

In summary, OPEC crude oil production decreased by 18,000 bpd, from the previous month to average 31.73 million bpd in April, according to secondary sources.

“Crude oil production declined in the UAE, Libya, Iraq and Iran, but increased in Angola and Saudi Arabia,” OPEC said in the report.

The 13-member cartel increased its forecast for oil supply growth from non-members in 2017 but kept its outlook for global crude demand unchanged at 96.4 million bpd.

OPEC’s revision is largely based on higher production in the United States, where producers who rely on expensive advanced drilling methods have become more profitable as prices rise.

The publication from OPEC was released at a time when the country’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, reiterated that oil companies in the country will start refining crude.

It would be recalled, Kachikwu had in February stated that Nigeria will stop importing refined petroleum products by 2019.
