Doctors Suspend 10-Day Old Strike In Kogi

Featured Image

Doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kogi state have suspended their 10-day old strike so as to give room for dialogue with the State Government.

This disclosure was made in a statement issued by its Chairman, Dr. Godwin Tijani, after its Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) in Lokoja on Saturday, May 13, 2017.

In the statement, the association said the decision to suspend the strike was unanimously taken to honour the Kogi paramount ruler, Attah Igala, and other imminent stakeholders, for their intervention.

The statement read: “NMA has agreed to suspend its strike for two weeks to enable prominent personalities and stakeholders, mediate.”

“Since the Attah of Igala, NMA National President and our honourable members of the House of Assembly have requested the association to suspend the action and give them time to intervene, we have no choice than to honour them.”

“We will reconvene in a forth night to decide on the way forward if no positive progress is made and our demands are not met.”

The Kogi chapter of NMA had directed its members to embark on indefinite strike from May 3, alleging government’s failure to pay doctors’ salaries and arrears, among other demands.

Neville Lauds Conte And Chelsea

Featured Image

Gary Neville has credited Chelsea’s Premier League success to Conte’s managerial style and the Blues consistency.

The Stamford Bridge outfit secured their fifth League crown , their second in three seasons on Friday, thanks to the lone goal from Batshuayi.

And football pundit, Neville outlined the reasons Chelsea struck gold in Conte’s first season in England.

“You can see the camaraderie that exists between Antonio Conte and his players,” Neville said. “Last season, Jose Mourinho’s team look disinterested but they’ve re-engaged with the club, the manager, the system and the style of play.

“The players have benefitted from the free weeks of training. You can imagine the hours and hours of shape; a very methodical way of working. When you try something on the training pitch and it comes to fruition on a Saturday, the players start to trust you and it builds confidence.

“It doesn’t take a lot for our cameras to make a manager look a little panicky and nervous. Earlier on in the season, Pep Guardiola was looking like a confident manager and Conte looked a little bit ruffled. Then, all of a sudden, it started to turn, with Pep starting to look a bit more ruffled while Conte looked like a genius.

“Conte has found a system and found a group of players who stay fit. They’ve got consistency – they’ve had the reliability throughout with the same back five and goalkeeper, the same midfield and the same front three.

“I’ve never seen a team win the Premier League without strength and power. Costa, Matic, Kante, David Luiz, Cahill – that spine is strong. It withstood the onslaught that West Brom posed, but it can also break down more subtle teams.

“They can play different types of games and adapt. They looked like champions halfway through the season as I didn’t see any weaknesses. They’ve built relationships – that will be challenged next season but now’s not the time to talk about that.

“It’s time to glorify what Chelsea have achieved. You can win all the cups you want, but there’s nothing like winning the Premier League title. It has to be a priority.”

Always a source of reassurance at the goal-post and his form restored to that of the title-winning season under departed manager José Mourinho.

Rating 9/10

Asmir Begovic

League appearances 1 Clean sheets 0

Agitated for a move in January and was bound to leave to Bournemouth. Has featured justonce in the league, in a defeat at Old Trafford, but he’s been a decent backup goalkeeper all season

Rating 6/10

César Azpilicueta

League appearances 36 Goals 0

Forever Chelsea’s Mr Reliable. Always in command, and could play anywhere in the defense before taking a permanent role in the right side of Antonio Conte’s back three.

Rating 8/10

David Luiz

League appearances 32 Goals 1

Eyebrows were raised when he returned from Paris Saint-Germain as he was never the club’s first choice in the transfer market but he has since matured . No longer the error-prone defender of his first spell at the club.

Rating 8/10

Gary Cahill

League appearances 36 Goals 6

He scored timely goals when needed just like his captain John Terry when he was at the peak of his powers. This campaign will be a personal triumph for a player who has continued to defy all odds

Rating 8/10

Victor Moses

League appearances 33 (5 as sub) Goals 3

The player no manager wanted at the club, a veteran of three long-term loan spells in as many years but under Antonio Conte he became a key player at Stamford Bridge, Thrived as a right wing-back in the 3-4-3 to prove his doubters wrong.

Rating 7/10

Ola Aina

League appearances 2 (both as sub) Goals 0

The young defender was an under-study to his international team mate Victor Moses. He may seek more regular first-team football on loan next season.

Rating 5/10

Marcos Alonso

League appearances 30 (1 as sub) Goals 6

Another surprise signing.  His set-piece delivery has been vicious, his energy and ability to supplement attack and defence invaluable.

Rating 8/10

John Terry

League appearances 7 (3 as sub) Goals 0

He lost his place initially through injury but once he came back he couldn’t work his wad way into  Conte’s revamped formation. He effectively acted as an understudy for David Luiz but will still go out with a fifth Premier League title and as a club icon.

Rating 5/10

Kurt Zouma

League appearances 8 (6 as sub) Goals 0

Returned from a long-term knee injury and has featured from the bench, will  likely to be loaned out next season .

Rating 5/10

Branislav Ivanovic

League appearances 13 (7 as sub) Goals 0

His form was hit and miss and eventually became a victim of Conte’s tactical change. His departure mid-season for Zenit St Petersburg – a good move for all concerned.

Rating 5/10

Nathan Aké

PLeague appearances 1 (as a sub) Goals 0

Ake impressed to such an extent at Bournemouth over the first half of the season that he was recalled in January to provide cover.

Rating 6/10

Nathaniel Chalobah

League appearances 9 (all as sub) Goals 0

Has performed capably in cameos. Feels more part of the first-team set-up.

Rating 5/10

N’Golo Kanté

League appearances 33 Goals 1

A key player in Leicester City’s suprise title triumph last season , and he’s done it again in the Chelsea midfield. Always  protecting his backline whatever way possible and kick-starting the team’s forays up-field.

Rating 9/10

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

League appearances 6 (all as sub) Goals 0

Has played a more advanced role when picked, and will have learned at training under Conte, He made all appearances from the bench.

Rating 5/10

Nemanja Matic

League appearances 35 (5 as sub) Goals 1

Matics been first choice in central midfield alongside Kanté and has offered more defensive solidity than Fàbregas.

Rating 7/10

Cesc Fàbregas

League appearances 27 (15 as sub) Goals 4

Fabregas was mostly utilised  from the bench at the start of the season which he might have found strange but has never complained and, when called upon, he proved influential with assists and goals.

League appearances 32 (19 as sub) Goals 7

Lat season’s Chelsea Player of the year. The Brazilian season interrupted  by a family bereavement and Pedro’s resurgent form. Yet he still makes a mark whenever involved.

Rating 7/10

Pedro Rodríguez

Struggled last year having joined from Barcelona but has been sensational this season. Pedro has been a regular source of goals for the Blues this term

Rating 8/10

Eden Hazard

League appearances 34 Goals 15

The Belgian has been brilliant in the 3-4-3 syestem which has also liberated him from onerous defensive duties given to him by Jose Mourinho .His goal tally has eclipsed that of 2014-15 when he was the division’s outstanding talent and he just finds ways to dribble around players with ease.

Rating 9/10

Michy Batshuayi

League appearances 18 (all as sub) Goals 2

Signed for a significant fee from Marseille. He will go down as the man who won Chelsea the title. He has yet to start a league game. Antonio Conte is clearly unconvinced the Belgian is ready to make his mark in English football yet

Rating 6/10

Diego Costa

League appearances 34 Goals 20

A Bully of defeners but he has also  proved prolific this season, Interest from China unsettled the Spain forward mid-season and will be revived in the summer.

Gerard Deulofeu Must Decide Whether He Wants To Return To Barcelona

Featured Image

Gerard Deulofeu must decide he if wants to play at Barcelona next season, reports AS.

The Spanish winger has blossomed on loan at AC Milan in recent months and that has prompted Barcelona to decide to activate a €12m buyback clause to re-sign him from Everton this summer.

However, AS reports that the final decision lies in the hands of the player who, in addition, must convince Barcelona’s new coach that he warrants a first-team role at the Camp Nou.

In addition, Barca could potentially look to sell Deulofeu on again or include him as a makeweight in another transfer once they have brought him back to Catalonia.

We All Want Ross Barkley To Stay At Everton – Morgan Schneiderlin

Featured Image

Morgan Schneiderlin has urged teammate Ross Barkley to make a “good” decision by signing a new contract with the club.

Ross Barkley is about to enter the final year of his current contract with the Toffees and with speculation rife over his future, manager Ronald Koeman has given him a one-week ultimatum to commit his future or be sold on this summer.

The England international proved to be the difference last night with a 25-yard strike in the 1-0 win over Watford and Schneiderlin, who moved to Goodison in January, was full of praise for his “quality” teammate.

“We know the contract is between him and the club but what we can say is he is still working hard, has a good attitude and is very happy in the dressing room,” he told Sky Sports News.

“We will see what is going to happen. We can’t say too much on whether he will sign the contract or not – we want him to sign but it is his decision.

“Hopefully he will make a good one by signing the contract.”

Losing To Arsenal Changed Everything – Antonio Conte

Featured Image

Chelsea title-winning manager Antonio Conte has acknowledged that the club’s 3-0 defeat away at Arsenal was “a key moment” in the season.

At the end of September, Arsenal made light work of their London rivals, but a change in formation after that fixture sparked a 13-match winning run for Chelsea.

On Friday night, they wrapped up the Premier League title with two games to spare with a 1-0 triumph away at West Bromwich Albion, and Conte has spoken openly about his thought-process earlier in the campaign.

The 47-year-old is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: “It was very frustrating for me because at the end of the Arsenal game I didn’t see anything from my work or my ideas on football, but in this moment I found the strength to change and take responsibility and find a system for the players.

“It was a key moment in the season because every single player found in this system the best for him. When you arrive after a bad season and the team has arrived at 10th in the league it means there are a lot of problems.

“To find the right solution quickly isn’t easy and for this I want to thank my players because they trusted in the new work, my philosophy, video analysis to see mistakes and they showed the right attitude and behaviour.”

Cahill Pleased To Silence Doubters

Featured Image

Gary Cahill is pleased with their Premier League win, as he believes it is the only way to silence their critics following a disappointing 2015-16 season.

Chelsea were disappointing last season, as they finished 10th , in an attempt to defend the trophy they won in Mourinho’s first season back.

However, under Conte Chelsea have revitalised and sealed the trophy with a 1-0 win over West Brom, much to Cahill’s delight.

“There’s opportunities you get that you want to grasp with both hands and you have to cherish them,” Cahill told Sky Sports.

“We’ve been the best team in the league. We deserve it. We’ve worked hard. There’s no better feeling. We have to cherish this.

“People write you off at the start of the season. This is the only way to shut people up. You let other people do the talking for you.

“This is a special group of players, to show the character after last season, and for Michy to come on and get the goal and ultimately win us the title. We are champions. It’s another one in the cabinet.”

NYSC Corps Member Dies Of Lassa Fever In Cross River

Featured Image

Onwuegbuzie Stanley-Samuel, a member of the NYSC, deployed to Cross River, has died of Lassa fever disease at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

Lassa Fever And Why You Need To Take It Seriously (Must Read)

The state Commissioner for Health, Inyang Asibong, who disclosed this to journalists on Friday in Calabar, said the deceased hailed from Delta and was serving in Obubra before he died.

Mr. Abisong said the deceased was first admitted at the General Hospital, Obubra, where he was treated for cerebral malaria for one week.

She said that his condition got worse and he was referred to the UCTH for further treatment while his blood sample was taken to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo for diagnosis.

“The incident started about two weeks ago in Obubra and we all know that the incubation period of Lassa fever is 3-21 days.

“The deceased is an indigene of Delta State. The last time he travelled to his home in Lagos State was during the Christmas period in December 2016 and came back to Cross River in January 2017.

“The deceased was living in the corps members’ lodge in Obubra and since he came back in January, he has not left that community

“Unfortunately, we finally lost him yesterday. Sadly, the corps member contracted the disease in Cross River,” she said.

Meanwhile, Thompson Igbu, Coordinator, World Health Organisation (WHO), Cross River has assured the residents that the organisation had been working hard to prevent further spread of the disease.

Mr. Igbu said the organisation was working closely with the state Ministry of Health to curb further spread of the disease in the state.

According to him, over 15 persons, including the deceased colleagues living in the NYSC lodge in Obubra, had been line-listed.

“We have line-listed over 15 persons in Obubra who are primary contacts and the hospital where the deceased was first admitted has also been line-listed.

“We are supporting the state with essential drugs and we are making sure that necessary steps are taken to curb further spread of the disease,” he said.

Ngim Ogbu, Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, UCTH, said the corps member’s death was the second recorded case of death resulting from Lassa fever in the hospital.

Mr. Ogbu said the infection control unit of the hospital was on top of the case from the beginning by limiting the number of contacts.

“The body of the deceased has not been sent to the mortuary, this is because we are taking measures to curb further spread of the disease,” he said.

JAMB: 357 Prison Inmates To Sit For 2017 UTME

Featured Image

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that out of the 1.7 million candidates that will sit for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) which commenced today, May 13, 357 are prison inmates.

It is understood that the 357 persons are inmates in the Ikoyi and Kaduna prisons.

JAMB Tells Candidates To Check E-Mails For CBT Centres ‘Notification’ As UTME Starts On Saturday

This disclosure was made by Is-haq Oloyede, the Registrar of the board, at a news conference on Friday in Abuja.

Mr. Oloyede also said that the UTME examination scheduled for May 13 has not been postponed.

He, therefore, advised candidates to ignore rumours that the examination has been postponed, saying candidates writing the examination tomorrow should not fail to attend.

He enjoined the candidates to go to their respective centres for the examination.

The registrar said that the examinations would still hold as scheduled except for those that have Seven Days Adventist service.

2017 UTME: JAMB Registers 1.7m Candidates | Highest In Its 39-Year Of Existence

He also advised UTME candidates to always check their e-mails for further updates, noting that some candidates are fond of giving out their passwords and e-mail addresses to strangers in spite of several warnings from the board.

“Candidates should be aware of fraudsters who hide under cyber cafe operators to defraud innocent children.

“We have caught some of them while mischievously collecting money from candidates with the help of some security officers,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, authorities of JAMB have arrested a man for allegedly defrauding about 100 candidates by registering them with fake email address and phone numbers which he claimed to be JAMB address.

The culprit was said to have collected N10,000 from each candidate and had given them wrong information regarding the examination contrary to the official information from JAMB.

Uncle Of Freed ‘Chibok Girl’ Opens Up: “It’s Like Another Imprisonment, But This One Has To Do With The FG.”

Uncle Of Freed ‘Chibok Girl’ Opens Up: “It’s Like Another Imprisonment, But This One Has To Do With The FG.”

82 of Nigeria’s Chibok schoolgirls are free thanks to a prisoner swap between the Nigerian government and Boko Haram. The release is the biggest since the armed group swarmed a school in northern Nigeria in April 2014, kidnapping 276 girls.

82 Freed Chibok Girls Were Swapped For 5 Boko Haram Commanders?

But the ordeal is not over for the freed girls and their families, according to Peter Joseph, the uncle of one of the 21 schoolgirls released by Boko Haram in October 2016.

More than six months later, his niece, Sarah, is still in a government rehabilitation camp where the girls rarely see their families. “We were very happy to learn of the news that she was released,” he told The Stream.

“But we are not very much impressed with the way the government is handling the whole rehabilitation process.”

Since her release, he’s only seen his niece once, when he traveled to Chibok last December. Even then, he says there were set time limits on visits, and many topics – like her experience as a prisoner – were off limits. He calls her often, but says she is only allowed to talk for two-three minutes before being cut off. He says his niece has told him that “only females can sneak in to see them sometimes but males are not allowed into the compound.”

“Nobody is allowed to see them,” he says. “So it’s like another imprisonment, but this one has to do with the government.”

Peter’s sister Elizabeth is still being held by Boko Haram.

Boko Haram: Nigeria Secures Release Of 82 More Chibok Girls

The Stream also discussed the dangers of isolation; what rehabilitation means in this situation; and whether the ‘Chibok girls’ have become too famous to ever truly be free.

3 Feared Dead As WHO Confirms Ebola Outbreak In DR Congo

Featured Image

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed the outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with no less than 3 persons already feared dead after contracting the deadly virus.

Of the nine people suspected to have contracted the deadly virus, three died, with one case of Ebola confirmed through tests at the national laboratory in the capital Kinshasa, WHO Congo representative Allarangar Yokouide, said in a statement.

He further added that people began to get sick on or after 22 April in Bas-Uele province in the country’s far north.

The region affected lies 1,300km (800 miles) north-east of Kinshasa, close to the border with the Central African Republic.

“It is in a very remote zone, very forested, so we are a little lucky. But we always take this very seriously,” WHO Congo spokesman Eric Kabambi told Reuters news agency.

The WHO described the outbreak as “a public health crisis of international importance”.

It said the first teams of experts, including epidemiologists, biologists and hygiene specialists had been dispatched and were due to arrive in the affected region by Friday or Saturday.

A full statement issued on Friday by WHO on Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo read:

On 9 May, WHO was informed of a cluster of undiagnosed illness and deaths including haemorrhagic symptoms in Likati Health Zone, Bas Uele Province in the north of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), bordering Central African Republic.

Lampard: Conte Can Build A Dynasty

Featured Image

After Chelsea’s triumph of winning the Premier League title on Friday, pundits like Henry, Lampard and Jamie Redknapp discussed what the future holds for Chelsea and Conte.

And the Chelsea legend is sure if Conte remains at Stamford Bridge, he can build a dynasty with the club.

The Italian manager has been constantly linked with a move to Inter Milan, but nothing concrete has been said yet.

“I think so. If you’re a Chelsea fan that’s what you’re hoping for now. The way he’s held himself this year and the results have been different class,” said Lampard on Friday Night Football.

“N’Golo Kante is the player of the season, Eden Hazard was close, but the man of the season is Conte. He is the boss, he has driven them from 10th last year to make them champions and in the end it has been pretty comfortable.

“I think he’s going to be backed in the summer, and he does need backing. It’s a great squad of players they’ve got there but maybe there will be a freshen up, don’t lose your best players and add one or two at the top end to go into the Champions League.”

“This season they show me great attitude, great patience, great will, great desire to try to do something great in this season.

“And now, after this win, we must be happy. We must be pleased for this season.

“It wasn’t easy for me to arrive in England and try different habits, a different language, and inherit players after a bad season.”
