Ace Nigerian singers Wizkid, Tekno and Davido have been nominated for the ‘Best International Act Africa’ category of the 2017 edition of the prestigious Black Entertainment Television Awards.

According to the list of nominees, which was published by the organisers on bet.com on Monday, four Nigerian singers, including Mr Eazi, and three South Africans and Ghanaian artistes were nominated for the awards.

American pop star, Beyonce top the overall list, with seven nominations for the show – scheduled to take place on June 25 at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, U.S.A.

The BET Awards which was established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television Network, celebrates African-Americans in music.

It also honours celebrities in acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year.

The ceremony celebrates mass achievements in black entertainment and honours music, sports, television, and movies released between April 1, 2016, and March 31, 2017.

The annual presentation ceremony features performances by artists, and some of the awards of more popular interest are presented in a televised ceremony.

In 2016, Wizkid went home with the same award title as a joint winner with Ghana’s hip hop singer Sarkodie, in the keenly contested category.

JAMB: 440,000 Candidates Sit For UTME Across Nigeria On Day 2

Featured Image

At least 440,000 candidates have sat for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) within two days across the country.

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, made this known in Abuja on Monday during a tour of the examination centres in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

JAMB: 357 Prison Inmates To Sit For 2017 UTME

Oloyede said that the exams would end in Bauchi, Abia, Niger states and some other states on May 15 while the UTME would continue in Kebbi state, Lagos state, Oyo and some other states.

He also said that some centres in Delta state were underutilised, adding that the Board would fully involve the centres in future exams.

Oloyede further called on candidates to avoid being exploited by unscrupulous persons in the name of getting exam questions for them.

The JAMB Registrar said that a case of a person who attacked JAMB officials in Abia state had been reported to the security personnel.

“I believe everything is going on well. We are monitoring the situation except for a person that was said to have attacked our staff in Abia state this morning.

“Candidates should be careful because some of these people go about telling the candidates they can give them questions.

“We are therefore appealing to people to do everything according to the law and avoid cutting corners with JAMB,’’ he said.

N4.9bn Fraud: EFCC Re-Arraigns Fani-Kayode Before New Judge

Featured Image

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday re-arraigned a former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, before a Lagos Division of the Federal High Court, for an alleged fraud of N4.9bn.

The ex-minister was earlier today re-arraigned before a new judge, Justice Rilwan Aikawa, after he objected to being tried before Justice Muslim Hassan of the same court before whom he was earlier arraigned on June 28, 2016.

Mr. Fani-Kayode, who was part of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election campaign, was rearraigned alongside Nenadi Usman, a former minister of state for finance on a 17-count charge of money laundering and alleged diversion of N4.9 billion.

The 17 counts pressed against them border on conspiracy, unlawful retention of proceeds of theft and money laundering.

Others include one Danjuma Yusuf and a company, Joint Trust Dimension Nig. Ltd.

The anti-graft agency is accusing them of indirectly retaining N300m, N400m and N800m, all proceeds of corruption.

The EFCC also alleged that they committed the offence between January 8 and March 25, 2015, ahead of the 2015 general election.

In one of the counts, the defendants were accused of conspiring among themselves to “indirectly retain the sum of N1,500, 000,000.00 which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: stealing.”

The defendants pleaded not guilty before the judge.

After much deliberation, the judge adjourned the case till June 6 and 9.

University Of Ilorin (Unilorin) Increases Age Limit Of VC Applicants To 65

Featured Image

The Governing Council of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) has increased the age limit of prospective applicants for the position of its vice chancellor from 60 to 65 years.

Mr Dada Obafemi, Registrar and Secretary to Council of the University, announced this in a statement in Ilorin on Monday.

“The Governing Council of the University of Ilorin has approved the change in the age limit of prospective applicants of the university’s vice chancellor to be from 60 to 65 years by October 16, 2017,’’ the statement said.

The Council noted that the change in age limit was in accordance with the Universities Miscellaneous Provisions, Act No. 11 of 1993, and Universities Miscellaneous Provisions, amendment Act 2012.

NAN reports that the institution had earlier in newspaper advertisements barred candidates above 60 years from applying for the position of the university vice chancellor which becomes vacant on Oct. 16, 2017.

NNPC Set To Resume Oil Exploration In Borno State

Featured Image

The Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Alhaji Maikanti Baru has stated that the corporation has concluded plans to mobilize heavy and sophisticated equipment to resume the oil exploration in the Lake Chad Basin of Borno state.

Speaking on Monday after he led top management staff of NNPC on a courtesy visit to the State Governor Kashim Shettima at the Government House, Maiduguri, Baru disclosed that the resumption which will be done in the next six months was based on the military’s assurance of adequate security, relative peace as a result of the degrading of Boko Haram sects in the north east sub -region.

This disclosure was brought to light at a time when the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) announced that Nigeria’s crude oil production rose by 274,000 barrels per day in April, the biggest increase it has witnessed among its peers in the 13-member cartel.

However, the increase was not enough to help the country dislodge Angola as Africa’s top oil producer, a status the continent’s most populous nation lost in recent months.

While revealing its Monthly Oil Market Report for May on Thursday, OPEC placed Nigeria’s output at 1.484 million bpd for April, from 1.21 million bpd in the previous month, which was based on direct communication.

The publication from OPEC was released after the country’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, reiterated that oil companies in the country will start refining crude.

It would be recalled, Kachikwu had in February stated that Nigeria will stop importing refined petroleum products by 2019.

Court Dissolves 4-Year-Old Marriage After Wife Concealed HIV Status

A Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on Monday dissolved a four-year marriage between Mr Ugochukwu Eke and his wife Uchenna Eke due to the terminal disease which she concealed.

400 Patients Recalled For HIV Tests After They Were Treated By An Infected Doctor

During court session today, the judge, Justice Jude Okeke, in his judgment, held that the petitioner’s evidence had been accepted since the woman did not file any protest contradicting the facts.

The Judge said: “The court holds the view that by undeniable evidence that the respondent is suffering from HIV prior and during the marriage.

“In the circumstance, the court holds the view that the petitioner has fulfilled the provisions of section 5 (1) (a) of the Matrimonial Causes Act 2004 to grant the prayers sought.

“In the light of this, a decree of nullity of the marriage between the petitioner and the respondent contracted on Feb. 12, 2013, at marriage registry of Kaduna South District is hereby nullified.’’

On June 15, Eke had filed a petition seeking the nullification of his marriage with his wife, Uchenna.

The judge said that the petitioner pleaded for voiding of the marriage because his wife was suffering from a terminal disease, and in a communicable form before the consummation of the marriage.

He held that the woman concealed the information about her health condition from her husband and they got married after which she relocated from Kaduna to Abuja on Nov. 29, 2013, to join the man.

Okeke held that there was no pre-marital dating and no medical laboratory test to ascertain their HIV status.

He said that Eke on Dec. 2, 2015, discovered that his wife was HIV positive after observing that she was sick and frequenting Kaduna to visit a doctor.

According to the judge, the petitioner stopped having sexual intercourse with the respondent and on Feb. 15, 2016, she packed out of the house.

NAN reports that the judge then dissolved the marriage on grounds that the woman did not contradict the prayer of her husband and the facts presented by him to end the union.

Riyad Mahrez Feels Appreciated At Leicester City -Craig Shakespeare

Featured Image

Craig Shakespeare has insisted that Riyad Mahrez will be appreciated at Leicester as the forward considers his future at the club.

Mahrez told Sky Sports last week that he is not sure whether he will still be at the club next season, after admitting he wanted to leave last summer.

Leicester boss Shakespeare has insisted any reports about Mahrez, or any other player, leaving is “pure speculation” but does admit the club needs to make him feel wanted.

“We don’t need to pander to everybody’s needs,” he said ahead of their penultimate game of the season at home to Spurs.

“But they need to know they are wanted at a football club and appreciated. Riyad is one of many who, if you ask him, feels appreciated and wanted here, not only by the coaching staff and the owners and the fans but also by the players as well.

“There is always going to be speculation because they are good players. They are under contract with us. Everything else is pure speculation.

“You don’t have a decision to make unless you get an offer, and we haven’t had an offer for any one of our players.”

Replacing Pablo Zabaleta Will Be Difficult – Pep Guardiola

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola admits it will be difficult to replace Pablo Zabaleta’s experience as the Man City boss goes in search of a new right-back this summer.

City have confirmed that Zabaleta will leave the club at the end of the season after nine years, with Spurs’ Kyle Walker understood to be among Guardiola’s targets to come in.

“To be like Pablo, first you have to be that personality and you have to be a long time here,” the Spaniard said.

“It’s not about taking that player and he has the personality of Zabaleta, no. Everyone has his own personality. The question is not to try to change the personality of the players.

“Of course, with the players who were a long time here, it’s so important because with Pablo it’s how he teaches the new generation and the people who are coming from behind. It will be difficult (to replace him).”

Replacing Pablo Zabaleta Will Be Difficult – Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola admits it will be difficult to replace Pablo Zabaleta’s experience as the Man City boss goes in search of a new right-back this summer.

City have confirmed that Zabaleta will leave the club at the end of the season after nine years, with Spurs’ Kyle Walker understood to be among Guardiola’s targets to come in.

“To be like Pablo, first you have to be that personality and you have to be a long time here,” the Spaniard said.

Missing Out On Top-four Spot Doesn’t Upset Me -Jose Mourinho

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho has said that he will always prioritise winning trophies over finishing in the top four.

United saw their slim hopes of qualifying for the Champions League via a top-four Premier League finish extinguished once and for all as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

Jose Mourinho has prioritised winning the Europa League ahead of his side’s domestic exploits in recent weeks, though, and he claims that he had no choice but to focus on one competition due to United’s lengthy injury list.

“I am not upset because we had to make that decision. When people say we gamble, we didn’t gamble, we didn’t choose the Europa League – we had to do it. Because if I have Ashley Young, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, if I had these guys I can rotate, I can go for every match. When I have 14, 15 players, I can’t do it. It’s as simple as that. It is not possible to do it every three days,” he told reporters.

“With two matches in hand that we had to play later, it is impossible. We never had one occasion to rest, not even to train properly, so it was not a choice. We were pushed for that situation and even the [fixtures] draw… I never understood if it is a draw or if they put the data in the computer, but to finish the season with four matches away from home – Arsenal, Tottenham, Man City – if we were fighting for the title, what a way to fight for the title.

“If we want to try and get some results and protect players, which matches to protect players? I cannot go to Manchester City or Arsenal and put out five kids at the same time altogether. I cannot lose 5-0 or 6-0. So it’s difficult but we know what we are doing and I don’t know other clubs, I don’t know the way they think, I don’t know what is important for them. We, Manchester United, for us it is more important to win titles than to finish top four.

“So if we can win a third title, or like you like to say a second title, if we can do that it would be magnificent for us because we know that it’s a big objective. We know that if we lose the final we don’t play Champions League. We know that. But we fight for titles and probably other clubs finishing in the top four, probably they would like to be in our position to try and fight for the title.”

United take on Southampton and Crystal Palace in their final two domestic games of the campaign before facing Ajax in the Europa League final on May 24.

Featured Image

Mauricio Pochettino has praised Tottenham’s perfect performance against Manchester United, as they won their last match at White Hart Lane.

Victor Wanyama opened the scoring for Tottenham, before Harry Kane doubled the lead after the break.

Rooney pulled one back, but Pochettino’s side held on for the win , securing their second position on the table.

“It was a perfect performance and I am happy for the victory for our fans – it was a fantastic victory which the fans deserved,” Pochettino told reporters.

“We had the control of the game and played better. It was another great performance at White Hart Lane and now we have to focus on the last two games.

“We are playing against Manchester United and they have very good players. They have been prepared to win the league and win big things.

“It is great to achieve second position and it is fantastic for us. We have been unbeaten at home all season so there are a lot of things to be happy about.

“It is true that we will play in the new stadium and we will take the last step to win something. We need to feel that Wembley is our home and we need to find a balance between White Hart Lane and there. Next season we will feel it is our home.

“We will be proud of our achievements – we fought for the Premier League.”
