Klinsmann: Messi Deserves World Cup Win

Featured Image

Jurgen Klinsmann believes Lionel Messi deserves to win the world cup to seal his legacy and legendary status.

The Barcelona attacker has led Albiceleste to three finals on the international stage but is without an international silverware.

Argentina are one point off automatic qualification for the 2018 world cup, but could qualify for a playoff spot against a side in Oceania and Klinsmann would love to see Messi lift the trophy in Russia.

“There’s a chance he’ll get it in Russia next year,” Klinsmann told Goal. “A player like Messi needs to seal his legacy by winning the World Cup. I want him to win it because he deserves it.”

“I admire Messi, I’ve always admired him,” Klinsmann said. “But I also admire Maradona, especially because I played against him several times, in Inter against Napoli and in Argentina versus Germany. He is an artist because he saw what anyone else couldn’t see.

“He knew what he was doing and what he was going to do, even before he got the ball. He was always an artist in the field.

“Messi is different, he is a perfectionist. He’s a great character because he’s humble. He has one main quality: he’s a great scorer.”

Alli Not Guaranteeing Future At Tottenham

Featured Image

Dele Alli is insisting he is not sure if his future lies at Tottenham, but conceded there are a few better places than Tottenham.

The England international signed a six-year contract extension in September and his 17 league goals has helped Tottenham this season.

Alli is predicting further improvement for Tottenham under Pochettino, but is not certain where his future lies.

“You can never say what’s going to happen in the future,” Alli said. “No one knows. No one can predict it.

“But for me, it’s important that I enjoy the journey I’m on, whether I stay at Tottenham for the rest of my career or if one day I have to leave and it’s the right thing for me to do.

“I’m always going to be thinking about what’s going to get the best out of me, and if that’s going to be at Tottenham or if I have to leave it’s just important I enjoy the journey and don’t get too worried about how it’s going to end.”

Asked if he would definitely be at Spurs next season he said: “Like I said, you never know, but it’s a fantastic club to be a part of.

“We’re all looking to learn together, build together and be as successful as we can. We all want to achieve stuff so it’s a good place to be, and I think with the manager we’ve got here as well I can’t see many better places for me to improve.”

Times Heroes & Daily Times Nigeria 91st Anniversary

Featured Image

The attention of the board, directors and management of The Daily Times Nigeria (DTN) has been drawn to a fraudulent and manipulated press release trending on social media and purported to have emanate from the Legacy and Heritage Media Company.

We wish to unequivocally and categorically urge members of the public and numerous stakeholders of The Daily Times of Nigeria to discountenance the statement in totality.

A vivid and careful study of the illegal and fraudulent press release signed by an impostor claiming to be the company secretary, showed that it was the handy work of corporate hackers attempting to misinform the right-thinking members of the public on the corporate status and operations of The Daily Times of Nigeria.

The letter and spirit of the unauthorised statement also indicated that it was a calculated attempt to use the backdoor and social media to embarrass shareholders of The Daily Times of Nigeria and colour the national attention currently focused toward the DTN 91 years anniversary and 2017 Times Heroes Awards.

The trending fraud referred to as press release after more than two years of consolidated publication of The Daily Times, one of the titles in the stable of the media conglomerate and particularly now when the newspaper is celebrating its anniversary and hosting the Times Heroes Awards, remains a pointer to the wicked plans of the hackers and their ulterior motives.

It is instructive to note that The Daily Times was privatised in 2004 and all the assets and liabilities acquired by Folio Communications Limited as core and strategic investor. The Federal Government as represented by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) as noted in the accompanied photograph handed over the DTN to the Chairman of Folio Communications, Mr. Fidelis Anosike.

Prior to the privatisation programme, the DTN ceased to be a public liability company in 2001 as the media conglomerate also exited from the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).

The Daily Times board and directors, with Anosike as Chairman, once again reassured Nigerians and foreigners of our commitment toward the successful celebration of the newspaper’s anniversary and hosting of the Times Heroes Awards.

“We are committed and remain resolute in our mission and vision toward the restoration, reinvigoration and reposition of The Daily Times as the nation’s and continental media leader.

“As shareholders, we refuse to be distracted but remain focus and determine to meet the overall aim of the then Federal Government privatisation agenda,” Anosike said.

The board also assured members of the public that the anniversary celebrations and awards remain as scheduled and on course as planned.

Signed

Lagos Plans To Introduce New Number Plate For Commercial Buses

Featured Image

The authorities of Lagos State have said that it is planning to introduce new number plate for commercial vehicles in the state.

This disclosure was made by the acting Commissioner for Transportation, Prince Olanrewaju Elegushi, while addressing journalists at the 2017 Ministerial briefing to mark Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s two years in office.

Elegushi said the new regime of commercial vehicle number plate would ensure clear identification of vehicles registered for commercial purposes.

“The state agencies like Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, Number Plate Production Agency and ministry of transportation will fine-tune the operations and issuance,” the commissioner said.

The commissioner further stated that the database would contain a body tag, to be fixed to the body of the vehicles for effective monitoring and redistributing of routes for businesses.

He said that about 5,000 commercial buses would be injected into the transport sector to ensure safety and spread of buses and to ease transportation challenges in the state.

“There will be introduction of uniforms for drivers and conductors to signpost a commencement of decency, discipline and quality service to the people of Lagos State.

“It is also to serve as a mode of identification and distinction between drivers and conductors,” he said.

The commissioner also added that the state government planned to improve, expand and maintain infrastructure in line with globally accepted standards.

Fela’s Costume To Be Donated To Hard Rock Collection, As Femi And Seun Kuti Perform Live

Late Afrobeat maestro, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s costume will take a fitting place among other world music greats on the renowned Hardrock Cafe Music Me Memorabilia Collection.

The singer’s famous children, Yeni, Femi and Seun Kuti will hand over costumes worn by Fela, including pieces of clothing and shoes to representatives of Hard Rock International in Lagos.

Fela Joins Hard Rock Collection 20 years Later, As Femi And Seun Kuti Perform Live Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of Fela’s death, a two-part ceremony is slated for Thursday, May 25 at Hardrock Café Lagos. It begins by 3pm with an induction ceremony to be witnessed late Fela’s friends, entertainment bigwigs and corporate Nigeria.  The ceremony will climax by 7pm when Femi Kuti with his Positive Force band and Seun Kuti with his Egypt 80 band hit the stage for a pulsating power-packed night of Afrobeat music.

One the major highlights of the induction will be the release of a new song dedicated to the late Afrobeat maestro by 2 time Grammy Award-winning artiste, Lekan Babalola. The song entitled ‘Mr. Lakaye’ (Tribute to Ogun) is produced by Will Angelero (New York – UK based Producer) and co-produced by Lekan Babalola. In addition, sensational artist, Fola David will do a live speed-painting of Fela on stage.

Also to be donated are original evergreen album covers whose designer, veteran artist, Lemi Gharioku will also be in attendance. Lemi is known for listening to and digesting Fela’s music, then expressing his reaction in Fela’s album cover design.  Lemi has designed over 26 Fela album covers.

The Hard Rock Café induction is being put together by foremost talent agency, Temple Management Company (TMC) after brokering a similar donation last year by juju maestro King Sunny Ade (KSA) as well as staging the much-talked about Sunny On Sunday concert.

Fela’s historic music journey began in 1958 when his parents sent him to London to study Medicine but cleverly opted for Trinity College School of Music. Fela formed his first band Koola Lobitos in 1961 providing the fodder for a movement that morphed into Afrobeat, a combination of elements of traditional High Life, Rock, Funk and Jazz.

Fela’s music became the voice of the hopeless and a constant thorn in the flesh of successive military governments. Some of his popular albums include Open & Close (1971), Gentleman (1973), Confusion (1975), Expensive Shit (1975), Zombie (1976) ending with Confusion Break Bones (1990).

Ambode ‘Permanently’ Bans Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) From Lagos Roads

Featured Image

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday put the uncertainty concerning the absence of Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) on Lagos roads to rest once and for all, stating categorically that he has asked them to stay off the roads permanently.

Governor Ambode, who said this at the commissioning of Pedestrian Bridges, Laybys and Slip Road at Ojodu Berger, also urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to limit its operations to the fringes and highways and stay clear from the main streets of the State.

Governor Ambode Orders VIOs Out Of Lagos Roads ‘Until Further Notice’

He said the decisions were in line with his administration’s resolve to ensure free flow of traffic across the State, noting that their activities were contributing to traffic congestion on Lagos roads.

The Governor said, “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let me use this opportunity to reiterate that Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) have been asked to stay off our roads permanently.

“We also advice the Federal Road Safety Corps to stay on the fringes and highways and not on the main streets of Lagos. It has become evident that these agencies contribute to the traffic challenges on our roads.”

He said as an alternative, the State Government would employ technology to track and monitor vehicle registration and MOT certifications and de-emphasise impoundment of vehicles on the roads. Speaking on the interventions in Ojodu Berger, Governor Ambode said his administration at inception, identified the axis as one of the major traffic flashpoints that required urgent attention, adding that the decision was informed by the strategic importance of this axis being a major gateway into the State.

“What we set out to achieve with this project was to ensure smooth flow of traffic along the express, safeguard the lives of our people who had to run across the express and project the image of a truly global city to our visitors. Today, we are delighted that we have not only succeeded in transforming the landscape of this axis but with the slip road, lay bys and pedestrian bridge, we have given a new and pleasant experience to all entering and exiting our State.

“This project is the product of our innovative team of engineers, architects and town planners who have worked hard to create an innovative solution to tackle the challenges of this axis. I say a big thank you to the staff of the Lagos State Ministry of Works and the contractors – CCECC Nigeria Limited for a job well done,” he said.

To improve on the project, Governor Ambode said a food court would be built where people can relax before climbing the pedestrian bridge, as well as an interstate bus terminal within the Ojodu Berger axis for buses coming from outside Lagos to drop and load passengers, while intercity transportation system would move commuters within the city. Besides, the Governor assured that his traffic interventions would not only stop at the Ojodu Berger axis, but would be an ongoing process to create solutions to traffic congestion in every part of the State.

“If your neighbourhood or community is experiencing traffic challenges, be rest assured that we will soon be there. We will always ensure that promises made are promises kept. We will continue to rely on the support of all segments of the population for regular tax payments, obeying the rule of law and protection of public infrastructure. That is the only way we can progress and achieve our goal of being one of the world’s top centres for business, entertainment and leisure,” he said.

While alluding to the fact that the State has lived up to its reputation as a land of possibilities, Governor Ambode also expressed confidence that the future prospects of the State was promising and that the journey of the next fifty years has commenced on a very sound and solid footing. Earlier, in his opening remarks, the State’s Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Engr. Adebowale Akinsanya said the project was conceived by the State Government as a response to the yearnings of the people of Ojodu Berger Community for an improved, efficient and grid lock free road network, as well as the need to preserve the sanctity of life of Lagosians who hitherto were endangered by the need to cross the ever-busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Akinsanya, who is also overseeing the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, gave the scope of the project to include 98m pedestrian bridges with illumination, 150m length lay-bys on both sides of the expressway, 500m length of retaining wall with varying height from 3.5m to 7m and two multi-by bus park/bus lay-bys on Ogunnusi road with public convenience.

Other scope of the project included 650m slip road connecting traffic outward the expressway to Omole/Olowora Junction, 700m Ogunnusi/Wakatiadura dual road from Kosoko road junction to the expressway, 250m PWC Road to the expressway, street lighting on all the roads and multi-bay bus parks, signalization of all junctions, pedestrian walkway and drainage infrastructure, among others.

Swansea To Have Talks With Key Players Fernando Llorente And Gylfi Sigurdsson

Featured Image

Swansea are planning swift talks to resolve the futures of star men Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente after retaining their Premier League status.

“You always want to keep your best players and they’ve been excellent all season,” Swansea head coach Paul Clement said of Sigurdsson and Llorente.

“We’re going to have those discussions this weekend and in the early days of next week to decide how we move forward – myself, the chairman Huw Jenkins and our two main owners, Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien.

“But hopefully they have enjoyed being part of what we’ve done in the second half of the season.

“Hopefully they realise that we’re a good club, they’ve got good team-mates and they really want to stay here as well. I hope they do.”

Swansea’s first signing of the summer could be assistant manager Claude Makelele, who joined the club following Clement’s appointment in January.

Clement says former Chelsea and France midfielder Makelele is close to agreeing a new contract, and the former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich number two is also planning to add to his playing squad.

“We are going to look at doing some things in the summer because we want to be stronger next season,” said Clement, who steered Swansea to safety by taking 26 points from 18 games after they had picked up only 12 from their first 19 matches.

“But I am very happy with the way the players performed and I don’t see massive changes.”

Gus Poyet Admits He ‘Would Love’ To Sign Diego Costa For Shanghai Shenhua

Shanghai Shenhua boss Gus Poyet wants to sign Chelsea striker Diego Costa this summer, but thinks it will be hard to lure the player to the CLS.

“I would love to [sign Costa] but it will be very difficult for us because of the quantity [of non-Chinese players] we have got. There are three who are playing,” he told talkSPORT.

“There would have to be a massive change to the structure of the club to be able to bring Diego here.

“I don’t know if it’s going to happen, I would never say ‘no, never’, but I would say it would be very difficult for him to come here.”

Poyet already has three overseas stars in his squad – Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins, Colombian midfielder Fredy Guarín and Argentine forward Carlos Tevez.

I Have Enjoyed This Season At Chelsea – John Terry

Featured Image

Chelsea captain and legnd John Terry has insisted that he has enjoyed the current campaign despite only playing a bit-part role in the club’s Premier League title triumph.

John Terry was handed his first Premier League start since September during Monday night’s 4-3 victory over Watford, marking the occasion by opening the scoring in Chelsea’s first match since winning the title.

Terry has already confirmed that he will leave Stamford Bridge at the end of this season, but he believes that his experience under Antonio Conte will stand him in good stead should he go into management in the future.

“It has been a new experience but one I have kind of enjoyed. When I say that to people, they don’t really understand it. But I am Chelsea through and through and sitting there watching my club go on to do what they have done this year has been fantastic,” Terry told the club’s official website.

“I was sitting there wishing that the boys kept winning and performing well because for me I have had my time. It has been a good lesson for me because all of my career I have been in the starting line-up and never really seen the other side of being on the bench. But it has certainly served me well for the future when hopefully one day I become a manager.

“The manager has been a great example for me to add to my coaching in the future. Leaving me out the side was probably a tough decision for the manager but he was very honest straight away. As a player that is all you want, honesty. You can work as hard as you want, but if the team are playing well and winning you are not going to get back in. And the manager made that clear to me.”

Man Utd have been offered the chance to buy Real attacking midfielder James Rodriguez, according to Sky sports.

James is expected to leave Madrid this summer after becoming frustrated at the lack of playing time under Zinedine Zidane.

Real signed the Colombian from Monaco for £71m after he helped his country reach the quarter finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

James has the same agent as United manager Jose Mourinho – Jorge Mendes.

James Rodriguez has scored 36 goals in 109 appearances for Real and was part of the squad that won the Champions League last season.

‘Philippe Coutinho Is A Joy To Play With’ – Divock Origi

Featured Image

Divock Origi has described Philippe Coutinho as a “joy to play with” following the Brazilian’s man-of-the-match performance against West Ham United.

Philippe Coutinho scored two and created another as Liverpool thrashed the Hammers 4-0 at the London Stadium

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Barcelona this summer, but Origi is hopeful that the Reds can keep hold of the “special” playmaker.

“He has moments of magic. I think he has a lot of talent and he’s a top player and an experienced player and he’s still only 24, so I think that’s very special,” the Belgian told the club’s official website.

“He helps us a lot, is there in the big moments and for me he is a joy to play with. Daniel [Sturridge] as well is a big talent and of course he has experience. He showed his qualities again for Liverpool and he’s very important.”

Lyon Chairman Jean-Michel Aulas Hints That Alexandre Lacazette Could Leave This Summer

Featured Image

Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has revealed that striker Alexandre Lacazette will be allowed to leave the club this summer should a suitable offer arrive.

Alexandre Lacazette has been linked with a number of Europe’s top clubs this season with the likes ofAtletico Madrid and Arsenal the latest to be credited with an interest.

Lacazette has scored 74 league goals in the last three seasons, and Aulas suggested that the France international already knows his preferred destination this summer.

“Alex had a good option with a club that is in his heart. If the club of his heart is able to match our demands – as Barcelona did last season for Samuel Umtiti – then things will go well. Otherwise, it will depend on our other business,” he told reporters.

“But if any players feel that this club is not big enough for them, we will look for others who are just as strong but have the right mentality as well. If there are departures, this money will be used to recruit new players.”

Lacazette has scored 127 goals in 274 appearances for Lyon.
