Brook: Losing To Golovkin Is A Positive

Featured Image

Kell Brook intends to turn his loss to Golovkin into a positive, when he defends his title against Errol Spence Jr.

The British boxer will be defending his IBF welterweight title against Errol Spence Jr come May 27.

The fight will mark Brook’s first return to the ring, eight months after his first loss to Golovkin, a match that left him with a broken eye socket.

“It was a big occasion that brought extra pressure and I was in there with the big, most-feared middleweight there is but I showed I could stand with him,” Brook exclusively told Sky Sports.

“I sent out the blueprint to show that I am worth being at that level and for all the negatives that came from it, they all turned into positives.

“I took nothing bad from that fight. It is one big positive. You will see.

“I am champion of the world for a reason. They call me the ‘Special One’ for a reason and I want to show the world why, by using everything I’ve learned throughout my career, even the Golovkin fight.”

Med-View: EU Bans Nigerian Airline From Entering UK Airspace

Featured Image

The European Union (EU) has barred Med-View Airline from entering it’s airspace, barely 18 months after the lone Nigerian carrier commenced operation on the Lagos-London route.

The EU cited safety reasons for barring of the airline from entering the Europe airspace.

According to the European Commission, its aircraft – Boeing 767 – that it operate to Gatwick London is not airworthy and advised the carrier to change the aircraft or suspend flight operations to its airspace until it is able to provide another aircraft for its operations.

Apart from the airline, 180 other airlines were also barred from flying into Europe.

Also, 174 other airlines were barred due to safety oversight by aviation authorities in their home countries. All carriers from Mozambique and Republic of Benin have been removed from the list of airlines banned.

A statement released by the commission said:

“Today the European Commission updated the EU air safety list, the list of non-European airlines that do not meet international safety standards, and are therefore subject to an operating ban or operational restrictions within the European Union.”

“Following today’s update, all airlines certified in Benin and Mozambique are cleared from the list, following further improvements to the aviation safety situation in these countries.

“On the other hand, the airlines Med-View (Nigeria), Mustique Airways (St. Vincent and the Grenadines), Aviation Company Urga (Ukraine) and Air Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe) were added to the list due to unaddressed safety deficiencies that were detected by the European aviation safety agency during the assessment for a third country operator authorisation.”

Med-View was one of seven airlines barred due to safety conditions.

15,000 Persons Flee Homes As Herdsmen Slaughter 11 In Taraba Communities

Featured Image

At least 15,000 people, mostly farmers, have fled their homes to IDP camps in Taraba State, in the wake of renewed attacks by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

The herdsmen, it was gathered, had launched deadly attacks on Gazabu, Kungana, Tukun Ruwa, Utsua Daa and Kpenkpen villages, among others, leaving at least 11 people dead and scores injured.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP David Misal, said the command had deployed more security operatives to the remote areas affected in order to check further killings.

“Yes we receive reports that since on Sunday, there has being  series of attacks in the remote communities in Bali local government area of the state but the command  is on top of the situation,” he said.

The police spokesman also said that due to the remoteness of the affected areas, the response is not as effective as it should have been but assured that normalcy would return to the affected areas soon.

Zaki David Gbaa, the Chief of Tiv in Bali (Ter Bali) and Chairman, Council of Tiv traditional rulers forum in Taraba, also said 11 of his people were killed by herdsmen in the crisis that wiped out Gazabu, Kungana, Tukun Ruwa, Utsua Daa and Kpenkpen villages in Bali local government area.

It is understood that crisis was triggered after an Icheen man was murdered in cold blood by unknown gunmen.

The Icheen people reportedly suspected the Tiv people to have carried out the assassination and while the leaders on both sides were discussing to resolve the issue amicably, the Fulani herdsmen who had prepared an ambush, launched the attack, which killed over eleven people.

Daily Sun gathered that during visits to some of the IDP camps in Bali local government area, a large number of people who were coming in – mostly women and children –  arrived the camps with various degrees of injuries, attributed to attacks from herdsmen.

Arsenal To Make £20 Million Bid For Juventus Midfielder Mario Lemina

Featured Image

Arsenal are set to launch a transfer raid for £20m-rated Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina, who has been likened to Paul Pogba.

According to the London Evening Standard, the Gunners are considering a bid for the talented Lemina as they consider their options in the transfer market.

He has made just eight Serie A starts for the league leaders this season.

It is said that agreeing personal terms with the Gabon international should not be a problem and the deal would cost around £20m.

Arsenal’s potential failure to qualify for the Champions League shouldn’t be an issue either with Lemina’s main priority being securing consistent first-team football.

It is said that Roma and Schalke are also keen while Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Liverpool have closely monitored him in the past.

Lemina, a dynamic box-to-box midfielder, moved to Juventus from Marseille in 2015 for around £8m.

Mourinho Hopes Palace Go Easy On Them

United played their fifth match this month on Wednesday against Southampton, ending in a goalless draw.

They’ll now line up against Sam Allardyce men on Sunday, days before the Europa League final against Ajax.

“I never saw any detail of trying to care about the English teams involved in European competitions,” he said.

“I never saw that with Chelsea, I never saw that with Manchester United, I never saw that with Manchester City last year. I never saw. I never saw. So I think it’s just a lost battle [asking to move the game].

“You have to accept the way it is and I hope the fans at Old Trafford on Sunday, they support the team, they forgive some naivety, they forgive some lack of confidence.

“I hope that Big Sam shows he’s a good friend and they go slow. He tells [Wilfried] Zaha to go slow, he leaves [Christian] Benteke at home. I hope he goes soft on us.”

126 Boko Haram Jihadists Arrested Inside Borno IDPs Camp

Featured Image

The Nigeria Army has disclosed that it arrested about 126 suspected Boko Haram Jihadists at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Damboa, Borno.

This disclosure was made on Wednesday by Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor, while fielding questions from newsmen in Maiduguri, the state capital.

He said the suspects were flushed out during mop up operations.

Irabor further added that the mop up was conducted after the Boko Haram terrorists stormed Sabon Gari area in Damboa Local Government area of the state.

His words: “During the attack, we lost about six soldiers and equipment, some of our soldiers were also wounded.

“After the unfortunate incident, a joint operation was carried out by 3 and 125 task force brigade of the army.

“Based on intelligent report available, we learnt there was an attempt by Boko Haram to attack Damboa town and many of the insurgents have infiltrated the IDPs camp in Damboa.

“We also have an intelligent report that many of those insurgents that participated in the attack on Sabon Gari have infiltrated into the IDPs camp.

“During the raid on the camp, one of the terrorists in particular was identified to have taken part in the Sabon Gari attack.

“When we searched him, we found a wallet on him containing the Identity card of one of the soldiers that was killed during the attack.

“So, in essence, that gave the purpose for further operations that our troops of 125 Brigade and the Civilian JTF rounded up about 126 of the terrorists in the camp.

“As you all know that peace has started returning to the areas, but we realise that the Boko Haram terrorists were hiding under law abiding citizens to continue to cause havoc.

“The operation is a continuous one, even though the arrest had elicited reactions from some NGOs working in the camp, also the IDPs, who viewed what we are doing differently.

“This was what really happened, though yesterday, there was an incident in Konduga where three suicide bombers detonated their explosives killing themselves and wounded some locals.

“Also, we had a case where some of our troops on patrol in Dikwa ran into an Improvised Explosive Device, where two soldiers were wounded, but they are getting better in the hospital.

“In Damasak also, we suspected Boko Haram movement looking for logistics and food, we laid ambush and killed four of them and recovered a Hilux truck, weapons, fish and rice.

“It will also interest you to note that our Naval component of the operation have been very active in lake Chad.

“We are currently strengthening out platforms on that axis toward ensuring that we go deeper in our operations to fish out other Boko Haram terrorists in the area.

“Looking back into our operations in the last 14 months that i took over as the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, much has been achieved.”

Jamie Vardy Very Happy He Stayed At Leicester City

Featured Image

Jamie Vardy has insisted that he is glad he stuck with Leicester City and has urged his teammates to do likewise this summer.

Jamie Vardy was the subject of a £20m bid by Arsenal last year, which he turned down out of loyalty to the then-Premier League champions.

Leicester have improved over the past two months following a poor first half to their campaign under ex-boss Claudio Ranieri, but it could now be the end of the road for the likes of Kasper Schmeichel, Riyad Mahrez and Vardy if recent reports are to be believed.

Asked if he is glad he turned down the chance to join Arsenal, he told Sky Sports News: “Yes. Obviously you get frustrated when results haven’t been going your way but we turned that all around. As a team, and individually, we play better when we’re all enjoying things and that gets the best out of each and every one of us.

“I don’t know what will be set as a target next season, no one knows that. Obviously, we won the league but we set ourselves realistic targets. If you’d have asked anyone whether they’d have taken finishing mid-table and reaching the Champions League quarter-finals they would have snapped your hands off.

“Our targets depend on out-goings and in-comings this summer and once that’s sorted I’m sure targets with be set and then it’s down to the players on the pitch to get the points. It’s football, anything can happen.

“Obviously, it’s down to the club and the individuals themselves if offers are made for them or if they want to go. But if you look around the lads the vast majority of them definitely still want to be here and progress how we want to.”

Gylfi Sigurdsson Wants To Remain A Swansea City Player

Featured Image

Swansea City playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson has insisted that he is “very happy” in South Wales and does not want to leave.

Gylfi Sigurdsson has once again stood out in a disappointing campaign for the Swans, netting nine times in the Premier League and setting up a further 13 goals.

West Ham United and Everton are among the sides to have been linked with the 27-year-old, both of whom are reportedly prepared to hand over £25m for his signature.

Sigurdsson does not see any reason to leave the Liberty Stadium in the coming months, however, and instead says it is down to the club to decide whether they want to cash in.

“I signed a new contract in the summer and I’ve got three years left,” BBC Sport quotes him as saying. “It’s down to the club if they want to sell me. I’m not trying to leave or want to leave

“I’m very happy here. It has been easy in the last couple of months because we’ve been in a very serious position in the league, so it’s been easy to concentrate on that.

“I think it’ll continue to be like that because whatever happens, happens. I’m not desperate to go or anything. It’s not like I want to go. It’s just very calm and I’m not focused or concentrating on what people are writing.”

Alexis Sanchez Slams Arsenal Fans For #WengerOut Protest

Featured Image

Alexis Sanchez has slammed the Arsenal fans who are protesting against manager Arsene Wenger, saying the manager is ‘the creator’ of everything at the club.

The ‘Wenger Out’ campaign has gathered momentum this season, culminating in a partial boycott of Arsenal’s last home game, in which they beat Sunderland 2-0 in a stadium that was less than full.

But Sanchez said the protests were ‘very bad’ and heaped praise on his boss.

“In my opinion, that is very bad,” Sanchez said. “I think that a coach that gave this club a stadium, trophies and who has been there 21 years should have a statue done to remember him forever.

“He is a manager that looks after the players — he develops them and makes them mature. I’m happy here with the players, the club and with life in general.”

Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have so far refused to commit their long-term futures to Arsenal, with talks on hold until the summer.

“It doesn’t depend on me but on what the club wants or doesn’t want,” Sanchez said. “I try to do the best, give my contribution to the team with goals and victories. Once the season is over we shall see what they want.”

Jose Mourinho Unhappy With Premier League Scheduling

Manchester United will face host to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on the final day, a little over 72 hours before taking on Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm.

Jose Mourinho believes that United should be allowed to instead play on Saturday, with little riding on his side’s fixture against Palace, and will not be afraid to turn to the club’s academy players to keep his star names fresh.

“We are sixth, Crystal Palace are safe, it doesn’t matter,” he told reporters. “I think after the moment Crystal Palace beat Hull City [last Sunday] and Hull City is relegated and Swansea is safe – in that moment, our match has to be Saturday. In any country in the world, it would be Saturday, Jose Mourinho Said

“Have I asked the FA? I don’t lose time. When I know the battle is lost, I don’t fight the battle. I am here already seven years and I never saw any detail of trying to care about the English teams involved in European competitions. I never saw that with Chelsea, I never saw that with Manchester United, I never saw that with Manchester City last year.

“It’s just a lost battle. It’s frustrating for me. I hope you don’t kill me when you see my team [against Palace]. I hope the fans at Old Trafford support the team, they forgive some naivety, they forgive some lack of confidence. And I hope that Big Sam [Allardyce] shows he’s a good friend and he goes slow.

“He tells to [Wilfried] Zaha to go slow, he leaves [Christian] Benteke at home. I hope he goes soft on us. [Paul] Pogba will come in because he is not training or playing since his dad passed away. I will put two or three of my [senior] boys rotating during the games. I need to give a little stretch to four or five of my [senior] boys and to give some stability to the kids because I do not think the kids by themselves will be in condition to play the game.”
