Moyes Resigns From Sunderland Job

Featured Image

David Moyes has decided to leave Sunderland, resigning his position as a manager, following their relegation from the PL.

Moyes oversaw a season that saw Sunderland finish bottom of the league, with just six wins from 38 games.

The former Everton, Manchester United and Real Sociedad manager announced his decision on Monday.

Speaking about the decision, chairman Ellis Short said: “I pursued the services of David Moyes for a considerable period prior to his appointment last summer, which makes the announcement of his departure difficult for everyone concerned.

“Having worked tirelessly throughout the campaign to avoid relegation from the Premier League, David has chosen to leave the club without compensation, which is testament to his character.

“In the days ahead we will take some time for reflection, and then focus on recruitment and pre-season as we prepare for our Championship campaign. We wish David well in the future.”

Moyes said: “I would like to thank Ellis Short and the Board for giving me the opportunity to manage Sunderland and the fans for always being so passionately supportive of their club.

“I wish the players and my successor well in their efforts towards promotion back to the Premier League.”

Thurman Questions Brook’s Ability

Featured Image

Keith Thurman believes Kell Brook must show he is good enough to be among the best welterweights in the division.

Brook is looking to target Thurman for his WBC and WBA belts after defending his IBF belt successfully.

However, Thurman does not think Brook has what it takes to slug it out with the best in the welterweight.

“Of course Kell Brook came over here to America to take the title back home but for this one, he has fluctuated in weight classes,” he exclusively told Sky Sports.

“I am just interested in how bad he wants to be a welterweight and establish himself as one of the best welterweights in the world today.

“It is going to be difficult (moving back down to 147lbs) if he wants to hold onto that title and in my opinion, he didn’t do enough at welterweight before moving up anyway.

“For me, that is what this fight is about. In my opinion, there is so much going on at 147 but he had to go up two weights just to make a big fight happen.”

Brook Wants Thurman’s Belts

Featured Image

Kell Brook says he is looking to take on Keith Thurman, for a chance to unify the division, after fighting Errol Spence Jr.

The British boxer defends his IBF title for a fourth time come 27th of May against Errol Spence Jr.

And Brook is hoping he can get the win and yake on Thurman next, before quitting the weight class.

“My plans after beating Errol Spence would be to have the fight with Keith Thurman and unify the division,” Brook exclusively told Sky Sports.

“While I’m lean and down to weight I would like to get into another training camp quite quickly to fight Thurman at the back end of the year, that would be perfect for me.

“And once I have cleaned up the welterweight division then move up. That would be a perfect scenario for me.”

Kachikwu Vows To Resign If Nigeria Continues Fuel Importation By 2019

Featured Image

Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister of state for Petroleum Resources, has vowed to quit from the current government if he fails to deliver on the promise to end fuel importation in Nigeria by 2019.

The minister made this known while speaking in an interview on BBC World Service programme, HardTalk, on Monday, May 22, 2017.

NNPC: Nigeria To Stop Petrol Importation By 2019

Kachikwu, in the interview, vowed that he would deliver on the refineries and that he was committed to also deliver a future for oil that makes sense for Nigeria.

Asked by the programme anchor when Nigeria was going to be self-sufficient in terms of refining petroleum, the following conversation ensued:

Kachikwu: I have stated it, 2019 is the target.

BBC: You are running out of time because you know that we are near now.

Kachikwu: Don’t worry; I put the date, I will work it.

BBC: And if you don’t achieve it, you will walk (away)?

Kachikwu: Yes! Of course that is the reason why you are in government.

NNPC Supplies ‘Most Reliable, Cheapest Power Source’ To Nigerians

The minister also stated that since he took office one-and-half year ago, he has been able to get the refineries back to begin to produce 7 million litres of petroleum product compared to zero previously.

He said: “I have delivered on everything since I came to office. First, I took NNPC and moved them into a profit making organization first time in history and reshaped the organization. I removed cash call deficit of over $6bn, negotiated it. Everything that I have promised since coming into office, I have delivered. I will deliver on the refineries and I am committed to that and I will also deliver a future for oil that makes sense for Nigeria.”

Naira Trades At 380/$ As CBN Auctions $100 million

Featured Image

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday sold $100 million at a special wholesale spot and forwards auction, as it tries to improve dollar liquidity and ease pressure on the Naira, Reuters reports.

Nigeria, Africa’s economic hub, has resorted to regular injections of dollars by its apex bank to narrow the spread between the official and black market rates.

This is after the country’s battle with a currency crisis brought on by low oil prices which have hammered its foreign reserves and created chronic dollar shortages.

It is understood that the CBN has sold more than $4 billion to various sectors of the economy since it started intervening on the official market in February.

This, according to currency traders, has increased liquidity in the official market and helped to ease pressure on the naira.

Naira Records Gain As CBN Injects $457.3m Into Forex Market

Traders, citing a notice from the regulator, said the currency forwards being auctioned on Monday would be settled within 60-days and backed by customer demand.

The naira was quoted at 381.91 per dollar at the investor window on Monday, according to the market regulator FMDQ OTC Securities Exchange.

It was quoted at 315 a dollar on the official interbank market by commercial lenders, while it trading at 380 a dollar on the black market.

The naira has firmed on the black market from its record low of 520 to the dollar in February, before the central bank’s intervention in the foreign exchange market.

Portsmouth Supporters’ Trust Approves Michael Eisner’s Takeover Proposal

Featured Image

The Portsmouth Supporters’ Trust have voted in favour of Michael Eisner’s proposed takeover of the club.

Fresh from watching Pompey claim the Sky Bet League Two title, the Trust have opted to sell their 48.5% shareholding to the former CEO of the Walt Disney Company.

PST chairman Ashley Brown said “This is true fan ownership and democracy at work.”

“Our fans decided who the next owner of our club would be – and it will be Michael Eisner and Tornante.

“We believe he understands the importance of the custodianship of Pompey and will be an owner all fans will be proud of.”

Eisner’s takeover would mean the removal of the PST’s three representatives from the club’s nine-member board.

However, he has pledged to form a heritage board which would protect the club’s name, colours, badge and guard, while also preventing relocation to a ground more than 15 miles from Portsmouth city centre.

The statement read: ‘Over the last two weeks, 2,272 PST shareholders have cast their vote to determine the outcome of the Tornante bid for Portsmouth Football Club.

Following a 93.6 % turnout, 1,825 shareholders voted to sell the PST shares.

On Saturday, the PST Secretary informed Portsmouth FC of the outcome of the vote and the wish to sell the PST’s 48.5% shareholding to Tornante.

75% of the Presidents have voted to sell their respective stakes in the club. Together with the PST`s 48.5%, this means 81.4% of the club`s equity holding is in agreement with the sale. The threshold to approve a sale, as laid down in the shareholders` agreement, is 75%

Discussions around the sale will now begin with Tornante representatives and the timeline will be managed by Tornante.

PST Chairman Ashley Brown said “This is true fan ownership and democracy at work. Our fans decided who the next owner of our club would be – and it will be Michael Eisner and Tornante. The Trust board would like to wish Michael the very best of luck. We believe he understands the importance of the custodianship of Pompey and will be an owner all fans will be proud of. We look forward to working with him, his family and Tornante for many years to come”

Throughout this process, the PST board have strived to provide the membership with factual information to enable them to make an informed decision. During negotiations, PST presented matters and issues previously discussed with the membership and are pleased that some have been included in the Tornante offer. We will shortly begin a new era at Fratton Park and the Trust will continue to be an influential and relevant body in the club’s future. We will have three board members representing the PST on the Heritage and advisory board and we will be happy to help the Eisner family in any way we can to ensure the long term success of Portsmouth FC.

Our Trust Directors on the PFC board will remain in place during the transition period and will be working to find ways to enable Michael Eisner to assist the coaching staff in their close season planning ahead of the deal closure. After such a tremendous season, we would like to thank Paul Cook, his coaching team and the players for the fantastic job they have done, and wish them all the very best of luck in League One. The board would also like to thank Iain McInnes for his passionate and focused leadership as Chairman of Pompey.

Most importantly, we would like to thank you, the shareholders, fundraisers, syndicate members and fans whose incredible support allowed a fan owned club to recover from a perilous state to become Champions of League Two.

Leeds United Manager Garry Monk Wanted By Middlesbrough

Featured Image

Leeds United manager Garry Monk has reportedly emerged as a potential target for Middlesbrough.

Garry Monk is currently out of contract at Elland Road – despite talks being held with the club’s hierarchy – and the uncertainty at the Yorkshire giants has allegedly led to interest from elsewhere.

According to The Sun, Middlesbrough want to hold discussions with Monk as they look for a new boss ahead of their return to the Championship.

It has been claimed that caretaker manager Steve Agnew has not done enough during his time in the dugout after replacing Aitor Karanka, leading to chairman Steve Gibson assessing other potential targets.

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has been linked with the vacancy at the Riverside following the departure of Aitor Karanka in March.

Monk has won 25 of his 53 games in charge of Leeds in all competitions.

PDP Crisis: Sheriff Ruled Out As Supreme Court Upholds Makarfi’s Appeal

Featured Image

The supreme court has struck out an application filed by the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ali Modu Sheriff, seeking the the court not to hear a motion by his challenger, Ahmed Makarfi.

Mr. Sheriff had sought the court to refuse hearing on the application filed by Mr. Makarfi, challenging the February 17 judgement of the Appeal Court in Port Harcourt which made Mr. Sheriff leader of the PDP.

During hearing on Monday, Mr. Sheriff’s lawyer, Akin Olujimi, said the application was an abuse of court process because Mr. Makarfi ought to have requested the leave of court before making the application.

He then prayed the court to dismiss the application.

In his respond, Mr. Makarfi’s lawyer, Wole Olanikpekun, prayed the court to disregard the argument of Mr. Olujimi, describing them as baseless.

In a short ruling on the application, a five-member panel led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, said the application by Mr. Makarfi was considered valid since it complied with the rules of the Supreme Court.

Mr. Onnoghen said according to the Supreme Court rules, an application challenging a decision of a lower court ought to have come within three months after the ruling of the lower court.

He said the apex court had taken note of the fact that the case was decided at the lower court in February, while the motion at the Supreme Court was filed less than three months after the ruling by the lower court.

Petr Cech Wants Alexis Sanchez And Mesut Ozil To Remain Arsenal Players Next Season

Featured Image

Petr Cech has said that it is ‘vital’ for Arsenal to keep their “exceptional players” when discussing the futures of key duo Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

Arsenal missed out on a spot in the top four, meaning that there will be no Champions League football at the Emirates Stadium next term.

Both Sanchez and Ozil are believed to be keen on leaving Arsenal this summer as they prepare to enter the final 12 months of their contacts, but Cech has urged the duo to pen extensions in North London.

“Alexis has been brilliant, scoring a lot of goals. (Him and Mesut) are both exceptional players and obviously you always want to keep your exceptional players,” Cech told reporters.

“That’s the main thing is we need to keep the team together and try to strengthen it in the areas where the manager would like to, and then we will be ready to go again.

“If you have one odd year in 20 years, it is not a problem. I think the club has a strong foundation, a strong organisation and everything to be one-year out and come straight back in, like Chelsea did last season.

“Obviously, it helped them not to be involved (in the Champions League) this season because they could keep all their energy for the league.”

Isco Confirms He’s Staying At Real Madrid

Featured Image

Isco has confirmed that he will stay at Real Madrid after helping the club land the La Liga title.

Isco will see his current deal at the Bernabeu expire next summer, and it had been claimed that he would move on at the end of the 2016-17 campaign after struggling for first-team football in the early stages of the season.

The Spaniard has been a constant feature of Zinedine Zidane‘s XI in recent weeks, however, and the midfielder has revealed that he is ready to sign a new deal at the Bernabeu.

“Do not worry the fans of Real Madrid. I will stay,” Isco told reporters. “Yes, it was difficult for a while, but I have remained strong psychologically and I have received the support of everybody.

“It’s been some time coming, but it’s a dream come true to have won the title here, with my family and friends in my city. I’ll be forever grateful for the affection they’ve shown me. It’s a very sweet moment and you have to enjoy it. We’ve shown that we were capable of using the whole squad.”

Monaco Vice-President Vadim Vasilyev Not Interested In Selling Kylian Mbappe

Featured Image

Monaco vice president Vadim Vasilyev wants Kylian Mbappe to stay for at least another season.

The 18-year-old is being tracked by the big boys in Europe.

Kylian Mbappe  scored  26 goals and gave8assists and has played a solid role in helping Monaco to their first Ligue 1 title in 17 years and into the Champions League semi-finals

“The plan is to do everything to prolong him [Mbappe] and to do everything so that he stays a minimum of one more year with us,” Vasilyev told The Telegraph

“Our wish is to extend Mbappe’s contract, that’s a certainty.

“We’ve said to all the players that we won’t talk about the future before the end of the season.

“I insist no player has talked about his future, not one. We’ve all been focused, otherwise, we wouldn’t have won this title.”

He’s enjoyed an incredible breakthrough at Monaco and unless a club plays an enormous fee for his signature, there’s a slim chance we’ll see him leaving Monaco this summer as he continues his development as a player.

‘My Arsenal Shares Are Not, And Never Have Been, For Sale- Stan Kroenke

Featured Image

Arsenal majority shareholder Stan Kroenke says his shares in the club “are not and never have been for sale”.

KSE UK – The holding company for the American’s interest in Arsenal, issued a statement to the London Stock Exchange on Monday following media speculation concerning its commitment to the Premier League club, who have missed out on the top four of the Premier League for the first time in 20 years.

The Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov, who owns 30% of the club, made a formal £1bn bid to buy Arsenal, but Kroenke has no intention of relinquishing any of his 67% holding.

A statement to the London Stock Exchange read: “KSE UK, Inc notes the recent media speculation concerning its shareholding in Arsenal Holdings PLC and confirms its shares are not, and never have been, for sale. KSE is a committed, long term investor in Arsenal and will remain so.”

Kroenke has a 67% stake in Arsenal. Usmanov owns 30% but is not part of the board or decision-making at the club.

The Uzbek-born Russian said in April that Stan Kroenke must “bear huge responsibility” for the club’s failures on the pitch.

Nigeria To Spend N100 Billion To Fix Apapa Road – Fashola

Featured Image

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has said that the Nigerian government needs about N100 billion to construct the Apapa Road in Lagos.

Fashola, an immediate past governor of Lagos state, made this known in a statement on Sunday by his media aide, Hakeem Bello.

The aide quoted Fashola as saying that the design and other requirements needed for the reconstruction of the road were ready.

He added that the minister reiterated that the Apapa area was a priority to the Nigerian government, adding that it would solve the issue of roads leading to critical ports in the country.

The statement also stated that arrangements for the deployment of a long lasting solution in Wharf Road were nearing completion.

Speaking at a retreat in Abuja, the minister also disclosed that some private companies had offered to collaborate with the government to fix the road, noting that what was left on the Apapa road was to sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding,MOU, before proceeding to the Federal Executive Council for approval.

He said: “I just want to appeal to residents of Apapa and to people whose livelihood depends on Apapa, that Apapa is one of the priority roads under our ministry of works to solve roads that lead to critical ports.”

“We also have Calabar on our radar. But one by one, there will be an enduring solution. We’ve done the design, we’ve done everything for Apapa; it is ready. It is going to be a concrete road, I believe, that will last another 30 years. So, we are close to starting work.”

“The minister also assured that work would start on the road in a couple of weeks.”

CCTV: “We Can Still Cancel Results Of Cheats Who Did Well In UTME” – JAMB Tells Candidates

Featured Image

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that it will watch recordings of proceedings in its Closed Circuit Camera Televisions (CCTV) during the just-concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

This was made by the board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

JAMB Releases UTME Results For 742,906 Candidates

The spokesman said that such would enable it to detect centres where examination malpractices were perpetrated.

According to Benjamin, where there is any semblance of irregularities, the board will not hesitate to do the needful, that is, sanction the cheats.

“Those who know they were involved in any acts inimical to our examination ethics should not celebrate as their inglorious days of punishment will soon surface.

“Again, we want to seize this opportunity to debunk messages being circulated by those who do not wish our education well that the Senate has passed a bill urging the board to add extra 40 marks to candidates.

“There is no bill anywhere, not even a motion has been tabled before the two chambers of the National Assembly on the board’s 2017 UTME performance,” the statement said.

The statement added, “The board wants to state for the umpteenth time that our examination is not a ‘fail pass’ examination; it is a selection examination, so, it can never be said that there is mass failure.

“It will be absolutely wrong for mischief makers to begin to analyse an examination that has just been concluded without even looking at the overall result.

“We urge candidates to disregard all funny connotations online on their results as the board will not contemplate doing all that is being speculated as that will negate the ethics of an examination body as critical as JAMB.’’

It added that the board’s major concern had always been to ensure that cheating during and after examination were reduced to zero level, and this, he said, the board had substantially achieved.
