Pique: Buffon Deserves Ballon d’Or

Featured Image

Barcelona defender , Gérard Pique believes Juventus goalie , Gianluigi Buffon deserves to win the Ballon d’Or for his club exploits.

Buffon is set to captain his side in the champions league final against Real Madrid come June 3.

Buffon has won eight scudetto titles , five supercoppa italiana and three coppa italia titles, but is yet to win the champions league and has also won the world cup.

Even though Pique thinks Messi should win another Ballon d’Or, he feels the veteran goalie deserves it also.

“Messi this year will win the Golden Shoe as top scorer and deserves the Ballon d’Or again,” Pique told Mediaset in Italy.

“But if you must look at the trophies then Buffon has won the Scudetto, the Coppa Italia and can win the Champions League.

“He deserves it for his career and also for this season and it would be good for another goalkeeper to win it after [Lev] Yashin.”

“Brook Will Be Better Under Pressure”

Featured Image

Tony Bellew believes the pressure of fighting at Bramall Lane, will make Kell Brook better when he faces Spence Jr.

Brook will be looking to get back on the winning track when he fights for the first time at his home town of Sheffield United .

The fight on home soil will bring much pressure to the British boxer , whose only loss came in the match against middleweight king Gennady Golovkin.

“It’s a crossroads fight and in an amazing stadium as well. Will that be a factor? I don’t think so personally,” Bellew told Sky Sports.

“My night at Goodison Park – it didn’t affect me as I was so focused and zoned in on Ilunga Makabu. I’m pretty certain Kell will be focused on Errol Spence Jr he will forget it is even outdoors.

“It will be just Kell Brook and Errol Spence Jr in the middle of the ring and nobody else in the world will matter when those two fighters come together.

“Kell will thrive on the pressure, he loves high-pressure fights and seems to perform at his very best when he is under pressure. I don’t think it will be an issue for Kell – he’s a confident young lad, knows how to fight going forwards and backwards.”

He added: “Kell just has to go out there and impose himself immediately on Errol Spence, not let him get into any kind of flow or rhythm. If he does allow him to get into a rhythm, it’s very hard to get these southpaws out of it.

“For me, Spence is like a southpaw version of Vernon Forrest, throws everything correctly, long and straight down the pipe. He’s got reasonably good defence but it hasn’t been tested yet but he looks solid all around and the Americans have been raving about him for some time.

“But for me, Kell Brook is the proven one, he’s been there, seen it and got the t-shirt. He’s done it on foreign soil against Shawn Porter, he’s ventured up to 160 against the most feared fighter on the planet. It didn’t work out but he was giving a great account of himself until the injury occurred.

“But make no mistake, if Errol Spence Jr starts fast and gains control in the early part of the fight he will run away with it.

“The worst thing you can do is let a southpaw take control. Kell must start fast and continue the pace up until four or five rounds, then rest in the middle rounds and pick it up in the championship rounds. He has to show his experience and that he has been at a higher level. It’s imperative he does this.”

Alli: Spurs Don’t Need To Spend, If Players Stay

Featured Image

Dele Alli believes Tottenham does not need to acquire players during the transfer window, if all the players stay.

Pochettino already stated the club are not keen on buying players and says they must keep the squad they have.

Alli has been linked with top clubs in Emgland and around Europe, with Kane and Alderweireld also drawing interest. But keeping the dressing room unchanged, is what the 21-year-old believes will make the club better.

“With the players we’ve got here, we don’t need to go out and spend loads of money,” said Alli. “There is a good bunch of players here. Everyone is determined, everyone works hard and there is a lot of quality in the team.

“It is important we stick together, keep working hard and keep improving. We have to take our form from the end of this season into next season, and start even stronger.

“Then, if we can finish as well as we did this season, we should be OK.”

Brad Jones Extends His Contract At Dutch Champions Feyenoord

Featured Image

Brad Jones has signed a two-year contract extension with Dutch champions Feyenoord.

Jones kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in the Eredivisie last season (17) to help Feyenoord win their first league title in 18 years.

“Perfect way to end a perfect season,” Jones wrote on Instagram.

“Happy to say I have signed a new contract to stay at this amazing club for two more years.”

Since signing for the Rotterdam club in 2016, Jones has chalked up 32 total appearances in all competitions.

Feyenoord director Martin van Geel said Jones’ retention would be important for the club’s European Champions League campaign next season.

“We are very pleased that we have kept Brad at Feyenoord,” van Geel told the club’s website.

“He has had a very strong season with a lot of clean sheets and has thus played an important part in the championship.”

Jones signed for Feyenoord following an injury to first-choice Kenneth Vermeer mid-last year, despite being a reserve for Bradford City in the English third tier just months earlier.

The Perth product’s career took a downward turn in 2015 when English giants Liverpool let him go after only a handful of appearances over five years before stints with Bradford and Dutch outfit NEC.

Rob Holding Reveals How He Almost Left Arsenal In January

Featured Image
Rob Holding has revealed how he almost left Arsenal to loan in January.

The defender started the first three Premier League games of the season but then did not feature until an extended run towards the end of the campaign.

“I didn’t leave in January as the boss wanted me around the team. He saw me playing,” Rob Holding told the Evening Standard.

“I just had to listen to him and keep working hard on the things he mentioned. That has spoken for itself over the last few games.

“Since I got the chance, I’ve managed to take it and the boss has shown some faith in me to keep me in the team.”

Holding’s return to the team last month coincided with Wenger’s switch to a 3-4-2-1 system, a decision which took many at the club by surprise.

It was a formation first trialled against Middlesbrough after only a few days’ training but Holding revealed he has a head-start on learning the specifics, having been part of an experiment involving a three-man defence earlier in his career.

“We had a little play with it at Bolton under Neil Lennon when I first got back into that team,” he said. “I like playing in a back three, it gets me playing on the ball more and I can get to bring it forward which I like doing. It suits us at the moment.

“I have no idea if it’s the best system for me.

“I just like playing and when I get out there on the pitch, I just do the best I can in whatever formation we are put in.”

Real Madrid Confirm Signng Of Flamengo’s Vinicius Junior

Featured Image

Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Vinicius Junior from Flamengo from July 2018.

The 16-year-old will remain with his current club until July 2019, although he could play for Real Madrid before that if both clubs agree.

Wonderkid Vinicius was already being described to be the ‘the next Neymar’ before his first professional game.

And after coming on in the 80th minute of the opening game of the season against Atletico Mineiro, he caught the eye of several European giants.

He beat Barcelona star Neymar’s youngest debut record by a year and managed to get idol Robinho’s shirt in a huge day for the youngster.

Vinicius has also shown his talents at international level; in March he was top scorer in the Under-17s Copa Sudamericano, with Brazil beating Chile to claim the title.

The story of this young prodigy is fairly common among Brazilian stars; born into desperate poverty, the young striker’s talent was spotted in a city on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, in the streets of Sao Goncalo.

He moved with his uncle to central Rio at the age of 14, in order to dedicate himself to football and graduated through the club’s competitive youth system.

His introduction to big stage was emphatic; in October last year, he scored the opening goal in the Clasico against Botafogo in the Rio de Janeiro Junior Cup.

Jordan Ayew Talks About Scoring His First Swansea City Goal

Featured Image

Jordan Ayew has talked in glowing terms of his mid-season move from Aston Villa to Swansea.

“It has not been easy for me this season,” he told the club website. “I came from Aston Villa in January. I was lucky the club had confidence in me and brought me here. I don’t know what to say – thank you is not enough.

“I am so happy here. I feel like I have been reborn.”

Ayew admits he is aiming to have a strong pre-season to ensure he is in immaculate condition ahead of the 2017-18.

“It was a really good time (to score his first goal),” said the Ghanaian international.

“The team did a really good job so I have to congratulate them, it wasn’t easy but I’m really pleased to get my first goal.

“The most important thing for me was the team, I couldn’t think about my personal situation.

“I knew that it would come one day.

“The best is yet to come from me. This season was really difficult for me, at Aston Villa it was difficult.

“Next season I’m going to be at Swansea so I’m going to have a good preparation, rest well and come back fresh and hopefully I’ll have a wonderful season.

“I hope people are happy with the club’s survival and hopefully next season we will not have this situation, we want to keep this momentum going into next season.

“We need to build on this because if we’d done like we have since January over the whole season.

“The team spirit has been magnificent but it’s important to keep Gylfi (Sigurdsson) and (Fernando) Llorente, they are great players. They are part of our survival season, scoring goals and making assists.

“I had confidence in the style of play and in the coach so I came and did my maximum best.”

Nigeria Resumes Payment Of N30,000 Stipends To 174,000 N-Power Volunteers

Featured Image

The Federal Government has resumed the payment of the N30,000 N-Power stipends, a programme which it started last year.

According to Daily Post, about 174,000 N-power volunteers in the FG’s Social Intervention Programmes (SIPs) have started receiving their monthly stipends.

Although, there have been protest nationwide by beneficiaries clamouring for their stipends, but as of Tuesday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation, Afolabi Imokhuede, told State House correspondents in Abuja, that about 85% of the beneficiaries have already been paid.

He said: “Now when I mean 86 per cent after physical verification, as at last count in end of April we had about 174,000 qualified, verified volunteers out of 200,000.

“We are currently right now doing a final reconciliation with all the states and FCT just to ensure, because we also found out that there were few cases of computation error, a few cases of omission at the point of digitizing the physical master list.

“The only ways we can know that; or some states get to know, is when these volunteers call the helpline or send e-mails complaining of non-payment.

“We then say to them; you cannot be paid because our records show that you are absent from verification.’’

The Presidential aide said the programme had been using focal persons, using N power coordinators in the states to act as the go-between the government and the volunteers to crosscheck their data.

West Brom Must Recruit Over The Summer- Tony Pulis

Featured Image

Tony Pulis admits West Brom will need to spend in the summer, but only for the “right players”.

The Express and Star say Albion are expected to “comfortably break previous club records” with their summer outlay.

And they quote Pulis as saying: “I think it’s going to cost more money every year to improve, that’s the way it is.

“But you have to get the right players. It’s not just about bringing players in and spending money, you have to spend the money in the right way and they have to be the right characters and the right players.

“The important thing is they have to be players who are going to be in your starting XI and that moves everything forward.”

Tony Pulis is flying over to Guangzhou tomorrow to speak to owner Guochuan Lai, and will point to this run as evidence the team needs strikers and defenders.

“It’s disappointing,” he said. “The final games of the season have highlighted the fact we need to be better in both thirds of the pitch.

“The opportunities we had when we were in control of the game are there to be taken and we have to take those chances.

“Their first (Swansea) goal is a third division goal. Sigurdsson has got great quality, but our marking is absolutely shocking from two defenders.

“That is what has happened. We’ve been leading games this year. Even if we were a little bit more stubborn we would have drawn games and won games which we haven’t.

“We haven’t been able to see them out. We need to improve at both ends of the pitch.
