Manchester United were crowned Europa League champions after beating Ajax 2-0 at Stockholm.

Paul Pogba opened the scoring in the 18th minute, when his shot deflected off of Sanchez.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan added the second in the 48th minute with a close effort. The win means United have qualified for the Champions League.

United were outplayed by a young inexperienced Ajax team, but the win brings more recompense to the city of Manchester, after they were rocked by a bomb attack.

Mertesacker: Wenger’s Uncertainty Not An Excuse

Featured Image

Per Mertesacker believes the uncertainty surrounding Arsene Wenger’s future should not affect the team.

The Arsenal team missed out on the champions league, after finishing fifth on the table.

Wenger feels his uncertainty affected the team, but Mertesacker disagrees with the manager.

“I think we players, we did not care too much what happens to the manager next year,” said the centre-back.

“You cannot let yourself down or find excuses about the environment or the manager’s future. We are lucky to have him here.

“This is not my approach and not the team’s approach.

“I think we have to look at ourselves in the mirror and see what’s next for us.”

Wenger is expected to make an announcement over his future after this weekend’s FA Cup final against Chelsea.

Terry Doesn’t Care About Criticism Surrounding His Farewell

Featured Image

John Terry insists he could care less about the criticism, after he arranged his own substitution in the match against Sunderland.

Terry was brought off in the match, in the 26th minute, the same number on his shirt and has been criticised by rival fans and pundits for arranging his substitution.

However, the veteran defender does not care about the criticism and only cares about the Chelsea supporters.

“I could not care less, I promise you,” Terry told reporters.

“All I care about is celebrating with my Chelsea fans. Me and them have a wonderful rapport and have done for 22 years. Nothing that people write or say can ever get in the way of that.

“If that is the way I want to go out, that is the way I go out because I have been here 22 years, I have won so many trophies, so if I wanted to play one minute and come off, I would have done.

“I wanted to play 26 minutes because the shirt number means a lot to me and the supporters so, as long as they are happy – and I was over the moon with the reception – I promise you I could not care less.”

Terry added: “It was an unbelievable send-off from the supporters to help me to celebrate 22 years at the club. I am very grateful to them, and it was something I will never forget. It was so emotional after the game, I was in bits.”

Frankfurt Send Guillermo Varela Back To Manchester United For ‘Misconduct’ Over Tattoo

Featured Image

Manchester United defender Guillermo Varela has been suspended by loan club Eintracht Frankfurt after defying orders to get a tattoo that has ruled him out of the German Cup final.

Varela, who joined the Bundesliga club last summer, had been in line to feature against Borussia Dortmund in Saturday’s showdown.

But the 24-year-old has been axed for what sporting director Fredi Bobic described as “grossly negligent behaviour” after undergoing a procedure to get a tattoo that now needs treatment.

When Varela got a tattoo on Monday against club coach Niko Kovac’s orders, and it led to an inflammation, the defender’s hopes of playing the cup final and getting a permanent contract or signing another loan deal ended.

“His behaviour was reckless and hurts the team,” sporting executive Fredi Bobic said in a statement on the club’s official website. “Guillermo’s path at Eintracht ends here. The club can’t put up with a player acting against the coach’s and doctors’ instructions.

“We were already considering extending his loan. But that’s naturally no longer an issue. Guillermo will be suspended with immediate effect.”

The Biggest Game Of The Tournament Lived Up To The Hype #CBLAfrica

Featured Image

It was touted as potentially the biggest game of the tournament since the tournament tipped off  and on Saturday evening, we were blessed.

The 3-0 Eko Kings went up against the 2-0 Yaounde Giants, both teams unbeaten in the tournament so far, both playing the best basketball and both possessing 2 of the top 3 point guards in the Continental Basketball League. It was to be a battle of the elite.

Coming into the game, the Yaounde Giants had gone through the other two Lagos based teams, blowing out the Lagos Warriors by 38 points and defeating the Lagos City Stars by 8 points but they would have known they would have to play at their best possible level to get past the Eko Kings who had easily defeated the Lagos Warriors, the Abidjan Raiders and the Izobe Libreville Dragons by 16, 10 and 9 points respectively.

The game started and you would have been forgiven for thinking it’ll be a shootout with threes flying in from all corners of the court given the capabilities of both teams set of players, instead, we witnessed top quality defence from both teams most notably the Eko Kings. The Kings absolutely shut down the star Giants point guard, Lanerryl Esters in the first half. Everytime he had the ball in his hands, he had no space to breathe. Kings coach Bakare Ayo had a plan and it worked perfectly.

Lanerryl Esters didn’t have the best first half but he got better in the second half.

The Kings were probably helped by the fact that the supporting cast of the Yaounde Giants couldn’t hit their shots either. Giants star forward, Ian Carter started the game playing Centre, I don’t know if this was a move by the coach to stretch the floor but it wasn’t working because Carter as well was surprisingly cold all game. Carter finished the game with 9 points, 8 of which came in the second half of the game.

Ian Carter had his worst shooting game in the tournament with just 9 points

Thierry Bogmis chipped in with 13 points and Kome Arnold, who i feel was one of the best players in the game finished with 15 points. Esters finally found his form and his confidence in the second half as he finished the game with 22 points, 19 of which came in the second half sadly it wasn’t enough.

The Eko Kings played possibly their best game yet against their toughest opponent yet. First of all, Mark Hill is so good, I watched the game live with a couple of friends and immediately he stepped on the court, someone said “When did Isaiah Thomas tart playing for the Kings”. After the first quarter, i could see the similarities.

Mark Hill was sensational

He was the star of the game and his 29 points was a major factor in the win. Unlike the Giants, the Kings and Hill got capable from his teammates as Tom Bush Wamukota and Thomas George hit 23 and 20 points respectively.

Wamukota had a big game for the Kings

Also, Mohammed Ewida came up with a big defensive game for the Kings, he might have scored just 2 points but he owned the boards on both ends of the court, his defensive work was massive in the win. At some point he was in a 3 against 1 fast break situation and he won that battle against 3 Giants.

Mohammed Ewida was a defensive juggernaut

It was a great game and it ended 83 – 76 in favor of the Eko Kings who are now 4-0. The Continental Basketball League is in Yaounde now and will be back in Lagos for All Star weekend which starts on Saturday. I expect to see most of these players in the All Star Teams when the teams are announced as well as the dunk contest.

If you’ve been missing the games at #CBLAfrica , you can still make up with this weekend.

“The first batch of police personnel belonging to the specialist units passed out from the college on May 19.

“They will be on two-week vacation before they resume at their different state commands,’’ the commandant said.

“When they finish training, the recruits would be given attestation, service register and appointment letters by the Police Service Commission,’’ he said.

Health Minister Breaks Silence On Why Buhari Could Not Be Treated in Nigeria

Featured Image

Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole, the Minister of Health, has disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari could not be treated in Nigeria because of the long existing bond between him and his foreign doctors.

The minister’s remark on the president’s health was brought to light on Tuesday during an exclusive interview with THISDAY in Abuja.

Adewole, while breaking the silence on the development, also assured Nigerians and the international community that there is no cause for alarm over the president’s health.

“One thing we must realise is that health is a complex issue. There’s what we call patient-doctor relationship; there is also a bond between the patient and the doctor and these are things we can’t play with,” Adewole, who is a professor of surgery, said.

“I used to have patients in Ibadan and they still call me, and say ‘we will like to see you’. Then I have to say no to them because I’m no longer available and ask, ‘why can’t you see somebody else?’ But many of them are reluctant to do so. That’s the complex thing about health.

“We should give him (Buhari) that choice. What we really wish is for Mr. President to be well and hearty.”

“However, this is also a complex country, so I am not too happy about some of the insinuations, because we should pray for our leaders. We should continue to pray for him.”

Still addressing the concern among many Nigerians and the international community over the president’s continuing absence because of his health, the minister said:

“There is no cause for alarm,” describing Buhari as an unusual man.”

“He (Buhari) came back and told us that he was ill and that he was treated. When we have that type of leader, I think we can go to sleep.”

Buhari is currently in the United Kingdom seeking medical treatment for an undisclosed ailment – a trip, which is his third in the past year solely for medical reasons.

The Kano State Police Command, on Tuesday said it had arrested a total of 96 suspected rapists in the state between April and now.

Public Relations Officer for the Command, DSP Magaji Majiya, told reporters in Kano that 77 of the suspects had been charged to court, while another eight cases were under investigation. He added that the ages of the suspects fell between 23 to 75.

“It is disheartening to note that from April to date we have recorded 85  incidents  of rape and other related offences. A total number of 96 suspects were arrested and 77 cases have already been charged to court for prosecution”.

DSP Majiya expressed his worry that indecency and unnatural offences have been on the increase in the state. He said the Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Yusuf, has made it a priority to ensure that all such cases were thoroughly  investigated and prosecuted.

He went on to assure the public that the police would continue to apprehend all suspects involved in crimes. The PPRO urged parents and guardians to monitor the movement and behavior of their children, so as to keep them away from criminal activities.

Majiya also appealed to religious leaders to collaborate with the command in sensitizing  the youth on the need to shun evil acts. Manchester United’s Angel Gomes Can Be As Good As Andres Iniesta- Paul McGuinness

Featured Image

Former Manchester United youth coach Paul McGuinness has claimed that Angel Gomes has got the potential to become a world-class talent.

Angel Gomes,16, was given his first-team bow at the weekend, being brought on in place of Wayne Rooney for the final two minutes of the Red Devils’ 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

It was a just reward for Gomes, who scored 12 goals in 21 appearances for the club’s Under-18s team this season, as he became the first player born in the 21st century to play in the Premier League.

Ex-academy chief McGuinness spent 23 years managing United’s age-grade sides and believes that Gomes has the qualities required to reach the very top.

“He’s a real talent,” Sky Sports News quotes him as saying. “If he was Brazilian, people would be raving about him and, if he was six inches taller, people would be going mad.

“I suppose that’s our country. People doubt players if they’re short in stature but no-one is doubting Andres Iniesta or David Silva. He’s got the potential to be that type of player and, in England, you just don’t get many players like that.

“If you play him with better players, he’ll get better himself and create chances for them. You don’t want to build him up too soon but I’m sure they’ll handle all that at United.”

Marcus Rashford To Get £10,000 Salary Hike At Manchester United

Featured Image

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford will  be rewarded with an increase of £10,000 a week on his current salary, according to reports

Marcus Rashford,19,  has grown into a regular underJose Mourinho in recent weeks, filling in through the middle due to the long-term absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Rashford signed a new deal at Old Trafford last summer and, according to The Sun, he will see his wages steadily increase across the remaining three years of those terms.

A source is quoted by the tabloid as saying: “He is set to get the boost after a solid season, the young lad has made some real progress. He’s found goals hard to come by but has been told clearly he will continue to rise up the wage ladder here.

“He has the increased wages throughout his deal here. There was a worry he’d get too much, too soon. The lad is not on much as people think at present. He has come along and he’s going to be rewarded for that.”

Rashford, who has 11 goals in 52 appearances for the Red Devils this season, is said to earn around £30,000 a week before bonuses are factored in.

Gabriel Paulista Ruled Out For Up To Eight Weeks

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that defender Gabriel Paulista will be out of action for six to eight weeks with a serious knee injury.

Gabriel Paulista  was expected to miss this Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea after suffering the problem during last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Everton on the final day of the season.

Now, though, it seems that the Brazilian is in danger of missing the start of pre-season as scans have discovered that he damaged his medial knee ligament.

It is a blow for Arsenal, who are already without defender Laurent Koscielny after his red card was upheld by the Football Association, meaning that he will serve a three-match ban.

Professor Pat Utomi speaking about how the Nigerian economy has been managed by successive governments has stated that the “class of 1966” are still running the country with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Professor Utomi said that there was the need to get rid of more politicians and instead replace them with statesmen, people who can think outside party politics. “The central thing driving us should be Nigeria, the future, the children, productivity and growth. These are realities and should happen, but they are not happening.

“What happened in Nigeria is that the culture of the class of 1966 was primarily anti-intellectual. Maybe, they did not think through it as a policy, but they forced Nigeria’s brightest minds to live the town”, Utomi told The Guardian.

Buhari is part of the class of 1966. Is Obasanjo still around? Yes. What about TY Danjuma, Ibrahim Babangida? They are still around? Nigeria is still in their hands, and the worst part is that they have created cronies. What is required is a full understanding of what went wrong with Nigeria so that we can begin to correct it. Ignorance was a critical part of the problem. That is why we have the duty to educate.”

“The mistakes with the savings of excess crude earnings alone are so glaring that I think people everywhere should understand our problem. But we just chose not to understand that more than anything, we should educate the Nigerian people about why leaderships is an intellectual activity. We need to think.”

“This class also managed to demonize thinking so much that when you are thoughtful in Nigeria, people will say it is theory. Nigerians should have gone beyond this to believe that thinking is something that doesn’t work. Everywhere in the world, when leaders gather, they are looking for thinkers to be around them. But in Nigeria, we chase them away. As in popular culture, people in the street say, grammar. That is one of the cultural damages”, he said.

Speaking about claims from the Government about the country moving out of recession, he said

“See, this obsession with certain statistical numbers over incomplete understanding of people’s serious situation, I believe, is part of our problem. What is recession?

“Decline in growth, quarter over the quarter and so we are in this technical thing called a recession. If you manage to begin to grow the economy, say you have one quarter of positive growth and another quarter of positive growth, how much has that really changed the life of the average citizen out there? That is why for me, one of the best ways to look at history is the way offered by one of the great sociologists of the 20th century, Wright Mills.”

“He argues in his famous ‘the sociological imagination’ that you do not understand history until you get to that intersection point of statistics where some people died in the pursuit of personal troubles and until you understand a family that has managed to borrow, cheat, steal to put six children through university and all of them are unemployed.”

“Until you can understand their circumstance, you don’t understand history and it means you don’t understand whether recession is over in terms of statistical numbers or not. So, playing this game in terms of recession is totally meaningless to me.”

“I really don’t care whether we are in recession or we are not in recession, what I care about is the quality of life of Abubakar, Rasheed, Chukwuemeka, that is what really matters and it has not escaped mystery yet. Was it not Goodluck Jonathan who said that Nigeria was thriving? After all, it was the fastest growing Jet market in the world? That is a layman’s language in describing the thriving growth of an economy.”

“The measure of distribution of income in our country is a disaster, the country where many people cannot eat one good meal a day and a number of people are buying private jet, which is ill gotten wealth. If they worked for it, you will see the jobs created by their enterprise, but they have private jets in reserve and don’t have people in their employ. These are the kinds of people that need invitation to come and explain themselves”

Presidency Speaks On ‘Rumoured’ Coup Plot

The Presidency has urged Nigerians to ignore the media reports on Coup plot, saying it should not be stretched beyond what the military authorities had said.

Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, stated this at a media chat with State House correspondents to mark two years of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration on Tuesday in Abuja.

Nigerian Army Warns Officers, Soldiers To Steer Clear Of Politics

According to him, what the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Burutai, said about the issue was a “routine warning that goes to military officers.’’

He said: “The Army has spoken and let us take that position. What the Chief of Army Staff said was a routine warning that goes to military officers, don’t hobnob with politicians and the army has explained the position.

“Let’s take that position and not stretch it beyond what the military has said because they are the ones that can give us the definitive position and they have spoken on it.’’

The presidential spokesman also debunked the assertion that the ruling party had failed in fulfilling its political obligations and promises to the electorate in view of the reported hardships being experienced by a cross section of Nigerians.

He maintained that it was unfair to assess the performance of the Buhari’s administration within its first two years.

He continued: “People can always express their opinions, there is liberty on that but you don’t have a scientific survey that has given you the percentage of people that believed that the APC has failed.

“The second point is that, when a government via a party is voted into office, it is voted for a four year term under our own democratic arrangement.

“When you have spent two years which is like a midterm, the first half of a game, you don’t then determined that it has succeeded or it has failed.

“No. You can be accused of being atomistic using a small part to determine the whole. You can’t write the report card of this administration when it is just hitting the half way mark, that will not be fair.

“This administration will take Nigeria far beyond how it met it. So if anybody says APC has failed just tell them is too early in the day because is a four year-term and this is just two years. You don’t reach definitive conclusions in two years.’’

The presidential aide addressed the correspondents alongside the Senior Special Assistants to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu and Laolu Akande (Office of the Vice-President).
