Ferguson said he was proud of United’s performance in the 2-0 win over Ajax, as they qualified for the Champions League in the process.

“I think, first of all, Manchester is a city like Glasgow, it is a working class city, we have fantastic people there and they will get together,” he said.

“They have been through some difficult times in the past with the bombing in the Arndale Centre in 1996 and they recovered from that.

“They will get together because there is a working class ethic about them and there is a great unity now in the city.

West Ham Manager Slaven Bilic Hoping To Sign “Game-changers”

Featured Image

Slaven Bilic wants to add “game-changers” to his West Ham squad this summer as he attempts to mastermind a push for the top-six next season.

360Nobs understands West Ham are close to completing their first deal of the summer with Pablo Zabaleta in final negotiations to join the club, while they are also interested in signing Manchester City’s £20m-rated forward Kelechi Iheanacho.

“We need quality players. Of course you always need quality players, but sometimes you are buying players for the future, sometimes you are buying players for the squad to be back-ups and all that, but we are good in that department,” he told West Ham TV.

“Okay, we can talk about, if some of the players go, we can refresh the team with new players, but mainly we need the players who are going to improve the quality and be the game-changers.There are no guarantees in football, but we need starting XI players in certain positions. We want it all, but those players are very hard to get and they cost a bit.

“They are pretty much the privilege of the big, big, big guns. We have to close our eyes on some things. We can’t expect them to tick all the boxes with a mark 10.

Wayne Rooney Has Decided His Manchester United Future

Featured Image

Wayne Rooney says he has “more or less” decided his future, but insists he will take a few weeks to finalise his plans.

The Manchester United captain endured a frustrating 2016-17 campaign at Old Trafford, becoming a regular on the substitutes’ bench under Jose Mourinho. Following United’s 2-0 Europa League final win over Ajax on Wednesday, Rooney opened the door to a summer move away after confirming he had received offers from other clubs in England and abroad.

When asked whether he would still be at United next season, the forward said: “Honestly, I’ve said before, I don’t know. I’ve got decisions to make now over the next few weeks, have a word with my family, and then I’ll decide. I think I just have to make a decision in terms of a football decision, and that’s what I’ll do.

“I’ll do that the next few weeks with my family while I’m away and, honestly, as soon as I know what’s going on then, I’m sure you [will know].”

Pushed on whether he had decided what to do, Rooney added: “More or less, yeah.”

N4trn Fuel Investment Threatened, 19,000 Jobs At Risk Since NNPC Assumed Petroleum Product Importation

Featured Image

There are strong indications that over N4 trillion downstream investments are being threatened, as over 198 private depots or tank farms across the country have remained inactive since the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) assumed the full importation of petroleum products.

Nigerian Guardian is reporting that the depots do not include the 22 operated by NNPC through which it pumps refined products across the country.

It is also understood that about 19,000 direct jobs are at risk in the event that the depots close shop, aside from thousands more jobs that would be lost indirectly.

The failure of the depots to function is due to the inability of the major and independent marketers of petroleum products to access foreign exchange (forex), and also to obtain letters of credit to import.

The development has brought to the fore the proliferation of private tank farms and their sustainability in the long term, against the backdrop of the Federal Government’s promise to end products importation next year.

Speaking on the development, Jude Azubuike, a property expert, disclosed that it costs between N18 and N30 billion to construct a depot depending on the size – while at N18 billion per one the 198 tank farms will translate to, at least wasting N4 trillion investments.

According to him, about 50 of these depots in Lagos and Port Harcourt, and Warri have been put up for sale, by their owners to recoup their investment. But prospects are low because of the Federal Government’s promise to end fuel importation by 2019.

While the NNPC owns over 22 depots located in different parts of the country with storage capacity of over 87 million litres, coupled with it’s aspiration to make Nigeria self-sufficient in the refining of petroleum products by 2019, investment in the over 198 private depots may be lost completely.

Explaining the NNPC’s role in the downstream sector, the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, NNPC, Ndu Ughamadu, said that the corporation now has enough depots to store all imported products.

According to him, with the corporation’s over 21 depots across the country fully functional, the need to patronise private depot has reduced.

However, the Executive Secretary of Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association (DAPPMA), Olufemi Adewole has a slightly different explanation, as he attributed the idle depots to the inability of the marketers to import petroleum products due to the scarcity of foreign exchange.

Iniesta Unsure About Long-Term Barcelona Future

Featured Image

Andres Iniesta says he has no idea what the long-term future holds for him at Barcelona, but will see out his contract at the club.

The 33-year-old has a contract that expires in 2018 and is yet to be offered a contract extension.

Iniesta is no longer a first-team regular, starting only 13 games in the 2016-17 La Liga season.

“My bare minimum intention is to fulfil the contract that I have and that is what I want to do,” Iniesta told Rac-1.

“There are always options. It is a question of valuing everything, I am not saying that I will renew or not.

“Given how the season has gone, how everything has changed and how I have learned to value certain things, I said weeks ago that when the time comes for me to leave it will not become a confrontation between me and the club.”

Senate Makes History, Passes Petroleum Industry Governance Bill

Featured Image

The Senate on Thursday made history after it passed the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB), which seeks to reform the nation’s oil and gas industry.

The PIGB is the first of four bills that replaced the well-known Petroleum Industry Bill, which suffered setbacks in two consecutive legislative tenures.

The report on the bill, produced by the Senate joint committee on gas, petroleum (downstream) and petroleum (upstream), was presented on Thursday by Donald Alasoadura, APC-Ondo.

After a clause-by-clause consideration, with few amendments, the Senate approved the bill, moving a step closer to making its ambitious contents law.

Amongst other objectives, the petroleum bill seeks to introduce reforms that would engender transparency, while at the same time making the oil and gas sector more business-oriented and profit-drive.

According to Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who presided over the plenary on Thursday, the lawmakers had broken a 17-year-old jinx after passing the bill.

“I congratulate the 8th Senate with the passage of this landmark bill which has not been passed for many years,” the senate president said.

Meanwhile, plenary has been adjourned to Tuesday, 30th May, 2017.

Boateng Rules Out Bayern Exit

Featured Image

Jerome Boateng insists he has no plans of leaving Bayern Munich anytime soon, despite rumours linking him with an exit.

Boateng had a trying 2016-17 Bundesliga season, playing only 13 games, due to injury problems.

Reports suggest the 28-year-old could leave due to the tumultuous season, but he has rejected the notion.

“My only plan is to stay at Bayern,” Boateng told Sport Bild.

“There are very few clubs in the world that have the same reputation and tradition that Bayern have.

“I did not play as much as I would have liked to, so it is only normal that I am not entirely happy. But I will now use our time off to make sure I am 100 per cent fit again for next season.”

Boateng has a contract with Bayern until June 2021.

Moses: I Have No Plans To Stop Sanchez

Featured Image

Victor Moses has stated that Chelsea has no specific plan to stop Alexis Sanchez when they face in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Sanchez has been prolific for Arsenal this season, scoring 29 goals and assisting 15, as Arsenal finished fifth on the EPL table.

Moses has been an ever present player in Conte’s squad , since he started using 3-4-3, and he could face Sanchez, as Wenger has started to use the same formation.

“I haven’t got a plan to stop him! He’s had a great season, he’s done well for Arsenal but whether he’s injured or not we’re just going to play our football,” Moses said at Cobham Training Centre. “We came back to training on Tuesday and we want to get ourselves ready.

“It’s going to be a very hard game for us on Saturday. Arsenal are a good team with good players that can win them games. But we’re just concentrating on ourselves at the moment, working hard in training and hopefully we’ll go and do the job.

“We’ve got the league title and they’re going to want to win because they missed out on top four. We’re going to try and stop them because we want the double. We don’t feel any pressure. If he [Antonio Conte] says Arsenal are the favourites, then… I don’t know, but we’ve got good players that can win us games.

“We think we’re good enough to beat Arsenal but it’s not going to be an easy game.”

‘Newborn’ Baby Found Dead In University Of Maiduguri Female Toilet

Featured Image

The ambient of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) was awash in overwhelming emotion after students woke up to behold the horror of a ‘newborn’ baby dumped in a toilet in one of the female hostels.

According to sources, who published details and heartrending photos of the incident online, the lifeless newborn was found in the female toilet of the Murtala Hall Hostel of the institution.

It is understood that the female students who first noticed this, were alerted to the toilet yesterday by the piercing cry of the baby.

Upon getting to the toilet, the baby was found head down in the hole of the squat toilet.

Based on an eyewitness report, the owner of the baby tried to force it down into the toilet on Wednesday.

“The person that dropped the baby may have wanted to force the baby into the pit because the head of the baby was already blocking the pit.”

“If not for the body of the baby, it would have sunk down into the toilet. It was the height of wickedness that I have never seen until now,” the source told reporters.

The source further added that some female students around quickly called the attention of the hostel matron and security operatives to the scene.

“When the matron came she picked the baby and there were some injury on the face of the baby as well his nose. It was a baby boy.”

18 Houses Used By Kidnappers, Armed Robbers Demolished In Kogi State

Featured Image

The Kogi state government has demolished 18 houses serving as hideouts for kidnappers, armed robbers and other criminals, an official said on Thursday.

This disclosure was made by Cmdr Mr Jerry Omodara (retired), Special Adviser to the governor on security, while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja, the state capital.

According to him, the houses were destroyed in line with the provisions of the state’s law on kidnapping, armed robbery and other crimes.

He said that 17 of the houses were demolished in Kogi central senatorial district while one, an estate, was demolished in Kogi East senatorial district.

Omodara said that more houses were being identified, adding that any house where arms and ammunition were recovered, would be pulled down.

He restated Gov. Yahaya Bello’s resolve to rid the state of criminals, and declared that there was no going back on that stance.

Omodara advised criminals to steer clear of Kogi in their own interest.

In Kogi: Governor Bello In Double Voter’s Registration Scandal

Featured Image

Governor Yayha Bello of Kogi State has been entangled in a double voter’s registration scandal, after he was pictured in his office in the state registering as a voter the second time, having already registered in Abuja.

It is understood that Mr. Bello was spotted to have been registered by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Premium Times reports that a group, “Kogi For Change”, in a statement signed by its chairman, Omeiza Yakubu, said it would take legal action in view of the illegality of Mr. Bello’s action.

It was gathered that at the Kogi governorship election tribunal, the governor’s Chief of Staff, David Onoja, who stood as a witness, had said his principal never registered to vote in Kogi, but Abuja.

However, in the course of the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration, CVR, exercise, Mr. Bello registered again, this time in his office, in Lokoja, Kogi State capital, the group claimed.

“We got really concerned when we saw the picture of the Governor (Yahaya Bello) being registered by an INEC official inside his office,” said Kogi For Change. “Is the Government House a Registration Centre?”

The group added: “What happened to the INEC law that forbids double registration since the governor is already registered in Abuja? Then the question arises: Is the Government House the Ward or Unit of Alhaji Yahaya Bello? Was he not supposed to register in his Unit? Or is INEC going to create a special voting point for him inside his office during the next election?

“The impunity that unleashed the governor on the state is at work again and we are not going to take it lightly. As a matter of fact we have decided as a group to take the matter to talk. It is a criminal offence to engage in double registration.”

However, in a statement issued on Wednesday morning to Premium Times, Mr. Bello’s spokesperson, Kingsley Fanwo, did not deny his boss registered twice, but suggested it was not illegal.

He argued that the governor had to register again in Kogi, because nothing had come of efforts to get INEC to transfer his voter’s card from Abuja to Kogi.

He said: “From the first day, the Governor didn’t say he registered in Kogi State. It even came to the fore at the tribunals. He registered in Abuja.”

“He never voted in Kogi State. Nothing in the law makes it mandatory for you to vote for yourself before you can win a political position. We have had people who won elections from detention in the past. They wouldn’t have voted for themselves from detention.

“The Governor’s efforts to transfer the card from Abuja to Kogi State has not been successful, hence the need to seize this golden opportunity to get registered in Kogi State,” he added.

Kogi For Change also criticised INEC for registering Mr. Bello in his office, a place not designated for that purpose.

Jonathan Criticises NDDC For ‘Failing’ To Develop Niger Delta Region

Featured Image

The immediate past President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has slated the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for ‘failing’ to provide the needed infrastructural development in the region.

The former leader who made this known at the occasion of the Rivers State 50th year anniversary in Port Harcourt, on Wednesday, said despite the funds disbursed by the federal government for the development of the oil bearing communities, there has been very little physical infrastructure to show for it.

Mr. Jonathan further added that fiscal federalism was the system that would work better to facilitate development in the country.

He said: “This will allow states to assume control of the exploitation of their natural resources and mandate them to pay adequate taxes to the Federal Government.”

“My conviction that fiscal federalism will initiate faster development is born out of a comparison between the intervention Agencies and the 13 percent derivation. From the days of Special Funds, through OMPADEC to now NDDC, the Federal Government has provided funds for the development of the oil bearing communities but very little physical infrastructure to show for it.”

“This is so because these bodies are highly political and lack continuity as tenures are hardly completed. New Federal Government administrations appoint new teams who award new contracts hence the zone is littered with abandoned projects.”

“I believe that without the 13 percent derivation, action governors like Wike would not have the capital to drive his ambitious developmental projects. With fiscal federalism, the pace of development will be even faster.”

“Our people want us to improve on the way we govern ourselves. That was why in 2014 I set up the National Conference to examine the grey areas and proffer viable options that will accelerate our political, social and economic development. I am convinced that implementation of the Report will help resolve some of the problems in our country.”

“It is also my conviction that the future of democracy, not only in Nigeria but across the entire continent of Africa, lies in putting the people first. This will entail not only working to improve their lives but also respecting their rights to freely chose who to represent them, without let or hindrance.

“That way, they will be able to wrap their hope and future around the certainty of the declaration that real power belongs to them, and that the maxim of one man one vote is not just mere platitude.”

Nigeria Immigration Arrests 400 Illegal Immigrants In Edo

Featured Image

The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has apprehended over 400 persons on Wednesday for alleged illegal entry into the country.

The suspected “illegal” immigrants were said to have been arrested during a mop-up exercise which started at about 4am on Wednesday across the 18 local government areas of the state.

It is understood that some of them, who were arrested in Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha, Esan-West and Uhunmwode local government areas, had forced their way into Nigeria from neighbouring countries like Niger Republic, Mali and Chad.

Confirming the arrest, the Edo state Comptroller of NIS, Mr. David Adi, said the mop-up exercise became imperative due to intelligence reports to the effect that many irregular immigrants had relocated to the state, without any means of livelihood.

He said: “There are specific laws that specify how they (immigrants) should come in. Our law says that they should come in with proper travel documents and through approved entry points.

“But the security reports available to us indicated that many of them are in Edo state and they came in through illegal routes.

“If we do not ease them out, they will constitute serious security threats to this country. All of us know the security situation. Some of them claim that they are from Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa or Kebbi. But we, as professionals, always fish them out.”

Adi said that though the citizens of ECOWAS member-countries had the privilege of free movement, such persons should possess the right documents and travel through approved routes.

He added that those found without proper travel documents would be deported to their home countries after undergoing a screening process to ascertain their nationalities while those who are Nigerians will be released.

“Then, we will take those of them who are foreigners without proper documents back to their countries,” he added.

This disclosure was made known by the Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige, at the end of the meeting in Abuja, on Wednesday, May 24, 2017.

According to him, members will be drawn from the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and the Organised Private Sector and the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.

Mr. Ngige said the committee was set up as part of the effort to come to terms with the agitation for better pay by Nigerian workers.

The country currently has N18,000 as national minimum wage, which is seen by the workers as grossly inadequate, while labour unions have made it known that it would want an increase to N56,000.

Last Friday, Ngige had said FEC would review the report of the joint committee on the National Minimum Wage.

He said the 16-man Technical Committee on Minimum Wage and Palliatives had submitted its report to the main committee, headed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

”The report was adopted just last week by the 29 -man joint committee.

”So the report is now being taken to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approval next week(this week) and then the Acting President will constitute a National Minimum Wage Review Committee.

“This National Minimum Wage Review Committee will then fix a new minimum wage for the country.

”It has become imperative for a new minimum wage, because the last minimum wage has a life span of five years – it was signed into law by President Goodluck Jonathan- and it elapsed by Aug. 2016,” he had said.

On whether the Federal Government may agree to labours’ demand on N56,000 as minimum wage, Mr. Ngige said a minimum wage is simply “offer and counter-offer” which would lead to a consensus.

The naira rebounded slightly to 380 per United States dollar on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 on the back of sustained injection of the greenback by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The gain is coming barely two days after the local currency depreciated to 381/dollar.

The naira had also closed at 381/dollar last Friday, having closed at 380/dollar consecutively between last Tuesday and Thursday.

The local currency further closed at 305.45 to the dollar on the interbank market on Wednesday while it was quoted at 382 per dollar at a trading window for investors.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s apex bank has continued to supply dollars into the foreign exchange market.

The CBN injected $205m into the forex market on Monday. Last Monday, the regulator offered 457.3m into various segments of the forex market.

Senate Wants Lower Naira Notes Converted To Coins

Analyst said on Monday that the naira was expected to trade within a narrow range on the back of CBN injection of dollars to improve liquidity and narrow the spread between official and black market rate.

“We see naira trading within the prevailing rate as the central bank sustains its dollar sales this week,” one senior currency trader told Reuters.

Currency analysts and economic experts have described as effective forex policies introduced by the regulator in recent months.

They said the moves had helped to narrow the gap between the official interbank and parallel market rates of the local unit.

Ander Herrera has dedicated Manchester United’s Europa League trophy win to the victims of the terror attack that rocked the city on Monday.

United beat Ajax 2-0 at Stockholm, almost 48 hours after a bomb attack killed 22 and injured others after a music concert at Manchester Arena.

Herrera, who was named man of the match says the squad were not focused before the game.

“We were really, really sad,” he said. “When you think about life and football, you have no choice.

“It was difficult to train yesterday, really difficult for us but the manager told us that the only thing we could do was win this for them and that’s what we’ve done.

“It’s just a football game, it’s just a trophy, but if we can help or if we can support them with this just one per cent it’s enough for us.”
