Zidane: No Words Can Describe Ronaldo

Featured Image

Zinedine Zidane says no words can do Cristiano Ronaldo justice and believes anything is possible, when it comes to the Portuguese.

Ronaldo’s goal haul for Madrid might have reduced, but he has made an impact in matches he is needed.

The Portuguese attacker helped Real Madrid to the final of the Champions League, scoring two consecutive hattricks against Bayern and Atletico.

As Real prepare to face Juventus in the final in Cardiff on June 3, Zidane paid tribute to his star forward.

“As you well know, there are no words that can do Cristiano Ronaldo justice,” the Madrid boss told Uefa.com.

“He shows what he’s all about every time he’s on the pitch, by scoring goals. He’s now got more than 400 goals for Real Madrid in all competitions.

“These are unbelievable stats, but with him anything’s possible.”

Wenger: Arsenal’s Stadium Move Was A Difficult Time In My Life

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger has highlighted Arsenal’s move to the Emirates stadium in 2006 as the most difficult time of his life.

The Gunners left Highbury for the state-of-the-art Emirates stadium in time for the 2006-07 season, spending over £400 million on the new home.

A loan that was taken at that period, curtailed Arsenal’s spending power and Wenger had to sell high profile players like Ashley Cole, Sagna, Clichy, Fabregas amongst others.

“In 2006 started the most difficult period of my life because we had restricted finances, we had to pay back a huge amount of money and we had to sell our best players and we had to stay at the top,” he told BT Sport ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea.

“We had to stay in the Champions League and we had to make at least 54,000 people [happy].

“There are debates when you build a stadium. How big can it be? It’s quite simple: at the time it was £4,000 per seat. You multiply that by 60,000 and it’s £240million.

“Plus, we had to buy the soil and the all businesses we had to buy out so it went for over £420million, and we had to pay a huge amount of money back every year and that’s why we had to stay in the Champions League.

“Today, the television money makes the weight of the Champions League much weaker, but at the time it was absolutely needed, so that was for me the biggest period of pressure, between 2006 and 2014.

“Today, you tell me ‘do that again’ I would say ‘no, thank you very much, leave that to somebody else’ because it was an unbelievably tough period.”

This is just one of many transfers to come for Manchester City, as the club confirms the signing of playmaker Bernardo Silva on a five-year deal.

This comes on the back of the recent exodus at the club, that saw Clichy, Navas, Sagna and Caballero released.

The former Monaco player joins Guardiola’s side for a fee of £43 million , which is expected to rise after add-ons.

“Manchester City are delighted to confirm Bernardo Silva will join the Club from Monaco on July 1,” City announced in a statement.

“The Portuguese playmaker will arrive at the Etihad having just helped the French side to the Ligue 1 title and the Champions League semi-finals.”

“It feels great. To be honest I’m now at one of the best teams in the world. To be part of this club and to have this opportunity is great,” he said.

“I’m very happy to be part of Manchester City’s team and I look forward to trying to do my best to help the team reach their goals.

“If not the best coach in the world, he is one of the best.

“Of course when you have the opportunity of being trained by Guardiola, you don’t say no.

“As we all know, what he did in Barcelona and Bayern Munich was amazing and we expect also here that he will win titles. It’s great to be working with him and to have this opportunity.”

Democracy Day: Nigeria Declares Monday (May 29) As Public Holiday

Featured Image

The federal government of Nigeria has declared on Monday, May 29, as public holiday to celebrate the 2017 Democracy Day.

Speaking on behalf of the federal government, the Minister of Interior, Lt Gen. Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (rtd), congratulated Nigerians for witnessing yet another Democracy Day which marks the second year anniversary of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

Dambazau assured Nigerians of the government continued efforts towards guaranteeing security, revitalising the economy and tackling corruption, which are the three main focused areas of the administration.

He said: “While a lot has been achieved in the area of security, particularly in the Northeast, and in tackling corruption, recent statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) have shown tremendous improvement of the country’s GDP.”

“No doubt, the nation is closer to getting out of recession, particularly with the recently launched Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) which seeks to revitalise the nation’s economy soonest. “With the recently signed Executive Orders on Ease of Doing Business, we have opened our doors wider for both domestic and foreign investors.”

The minister enjoined all Nigerians to join hands with the government of President Buhari in his sustained efforts in building a peaceful and enduring democratic legacy.

“He wishes all Nigerians a happy Democracy Day celebration,” he said.

Nigeria Approves Closure Of Five Foreign Embassies

Featured Image

The federal government on Thursday said plans are underway to shut down five of its foreign missions and embassies as part of measures at achieving greater efficiency.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, gave this suggestion in Abuja during a briefing with pressmen on the achievements of the ministry in the past two years.

Although he did not mention the embassies or missions, the minister said the process for closure was underway and was also subject to the approval of the president.

According to him, the affected missions have already been identified and process of winding them down would commence if the president gives the go-ahead.

Onyeama said, “We do not want to indicate the embassies that will be closed yet because we are in the process of submitting the proposals, the cost analysis and also the political analysis we did to the president.”

“When he sees that, he may or may not want to close some, so we have not yet reached the stage of closing some,” he added, even as he also reiterated that the closing missions abroad were “extremely expensive.”

“The expense, costs of closing embassies is so high and prohibitive but in the long run it will be more economical”, he explained.

The minister who had last month said the closure of Nigerian missions abroad was inevitable admitted that it was expensive to close a country’s embassy.

Onyeama stressed that the reduction of Nigeria’s foreign missions remained on the agenda of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

On assumption of office, President Buhari had said that the federal government will reduce the number of missions to save cost.

“The government is following up on that and we have sort of prepared the road map. We have started the implementation of that and made also recommendations in that context.

“Paradoxically, closing missions is extremely expensive. At first sight, it seems obvious that if you close it you are saving cost but you will actually find that the cost of closing is almost prohibitive.

“But in the long run it will be cheaper, but in the immediate and short term, it is expensive but we have started the process,” he added.

Currently, Nigeria has 119 foreign missions.

AC Milan Legend Gennaro Gattuso Returns to Club As Youth Team Manager

Featured Image

Gennaro Gattuso has returned to AC Milan to take over as youth-team coach, the Serie A club have announced.

The former Rossoneri midfielder, 39, has managed Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa since retiring as a player in 2013, and he left the latter club following their relegation from Serie B this month.

Gattuso, who spent a season with Rangers in the 1990s, will look after Milan’s Primavera, which has recently produced the youngest goalkeeper to ever play for Italy, 18-year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Supposedly, the role was initially offered to Milan legend Paolo Maldini, but the former defender rejected it and now Gattuso is ready to step in.

“I’m going home,” Gennaro Gattuso said, via Gazzetta. “I’ve thought about it for the past three weeks and I have decided with my heart. It’s not like I am going to any old club either – it’s Milan.”

It is hoped by the Italian giants – who are under new Chinese ownership – that Gattuso can motivate the young stars in Milan’s academy after a poor campaign.

Argentina Reach Agreement With Sevilla Over New Boss Jorge Sampaoli

Featured Image

Sevilla and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) have reached an agreement in principle to release manager Jorge Sampaoli from his contract so he can become head coach of Argentina

The relevant documents have to be signed by June 1 for the deal to be completed.

Jorge Sampaoli can leave Sevilla this summer, however, provided his €1.5 million release clause is paid.

A statement from Sevilla read: “Sevilla and the Argentina Football Association (AFA) have reached a preliminary agreement for coach Jorge Sampaoli to separate from the Nervion club in order to become the Argentina national team coach.

“That initial agreement is pending on the drafting and presentation of the necessary documents that must be signed by the parties on Thursday, June 1.

“In the conversations between Sevilla FC and the AFA, who have acted as Jorge Sampaoli’s representative, at no time has there been a discussion about the fixed release clause that is set in the coach’s contract.

“All parties are satisfied with the agreement reached.”

Sevilla president Jose Castro reiterated on Thursday that his club would not accept a reduction in the release clause.

He said on the club’s official website: “I respect the AFA but the only thing that we have on our mind is the complete clause — €1.5m is €1.5m.”

I Will Remain Focused When I Join Real Madrid -Vinicius Junior

Featured Image

Real Madrid’s 16-year-old signing Vinicius Junior says he will remain grounded when he moves to the La Liga giants in July 2018.

Vinicius is joining Los Galacticos for a reported fee of £38m despite only making his debut for current club Flamengo this month.

However, his performances for the Brazil U17s at the South American U17 Championship in Chile are believed to be what persuaded the Real Madrid hierarchy to sign the highly-rated forward.

“I’m very happy with the transfer, but I’m not thinking about Real Madrid yet. My thoughts are to focus on only Flamengo,” the teenager told Fox Sports Brasil.

“I’m very happy to achieve this goal but now, while I’m still here, I wish to win many titles with Flamengo and then I’ll think about going to Real Madrid.

“My focus is to get there with my head firmly on my shoulders. I still have two years here in Flamengo and during this time I wish to gain more maturity on the field and be ready for my transfer when the time comes.”

Burnley Must Improve To Keep Manager Sean Dyche -Mike Garlick

Featured Image

Burnley chairman Mike Garlick accepts the club will have to “constantly improve” if they are to keep Sean Dyche at Turf Moor.

The 45-year-old was nominated for the Premier League Manager of the Season award and Garlick knows he faces a battle to keep hold of his ambitious English manager.

“If we’re successful, he’s always going to be on lists,” admitted Garlick.

“We just have to make sure we’re hungry enough to keep driving things forwards and keep improving, and hopefully that keeps him motivated.”

“It increases speculation but on the other hand, players we’re looking to recruit look at Sean and think, ‘Yep, I want to work for this guy’, so it can only improve the recruitment.

“We’ve got to constantly improve and look to strengthen year-on-year, otherwise the challenge for any manager would decrease, the stimulation of the project would decrease.

“We’ve got to look forward and improve year-on-year. Staying in the league has to be the priority. But look at where the table was four weeks ago, I think half the division could have gone down if they had a bad run.”

Dyche became the first Burnley manager in more than 40 years to keep Burnley in the top flight of English football for consecutive seasons.

Monaco’s Bernardo Silva Set To Sign For Manchester City

Featured Image

Manchester City are set to break the club’s transfer record by signing Monaco’s Bernardo Silva for £60m. The midfielder is expected to sign a five-year contract with the Premier League club on Friday.

Bernardo Silva, 22, has arrived in Manchester for a medical and to complete talks over a move to the Etihad Stadium in a deal that could be worth around £65 million.

Silva has been a key part of Monaco’s Ligue 1 glory this season and their march to the Champions League semifinals.

In the league in 2016-17, Silva played 37 games and scored eight goals and provided nine assists.

City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain has made a couple of trips to personally assess Monaco’s exciting young players.

Silva has been tipped to join rivals Manchester United this summer, but City appear to have won the race for the Portugal international.

United boss Jose Mourinho talked down a potential move to Old Trafford following the club’s Europa League success on Wednesday night.

“Will Bernardo Silva be with us next season? I don’t think so, honestly. But you never know, good players are always welcome here,” he told Portuguese newspaper O Jogo.

On Thursday, City confirmed the departures of Jesús Navas, Gaël Clichy, Willy Caballero and Bacary Sagna with Guardiola set for an overhaul of the squad he inherited last summer. All four players were out of contract this summer.

Zabaleta’s arrival will push Sam Byram down the pecking order while forgotten man Alvaro Arbeloa is set to leave the club.

‘This is an absolute pleasure to be part of West Ham United Football Club,’ Zabaleta told West Ham TV. ‘I hope I can give you good moments.

‘Of course, I come to the club to enjoy myself and hopefully we can have a very successful time.

‘Sometimes a new challenge is all you need as a person and as a player. I thought my time at City was done. It’s been a fantastic nine years, absolutely brilliant.

‘Manchester City gave me the opportunity to come to this wonderful league, the Premier League, something I’ve been enjoying a lot as a player and of course for me it was probably the right time to move on.

‘Also, as a player, I thought I wanted to keep playing in the Premier League.

‘For me, after being in this country for so long, this is a new challenge for me in the Premier League and I’m ready for it and looking forward to it.’

Gerrard: Under Klopp, I Would Have Won Bigger Trophies

Featured Image

Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool would have been a successful club, had Klopp been appointed three or four years earlier.

Gerrard left Liverpool for LA Galaxy in 2015, after which Klopp joined the club and he rues the fact that he never got to work with the German.

“I was looking around and it was a strange feeling out there,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “I was thinking if Jurgen Klopp had been at the club a bit earlier what might have been.

“There’s no doubt about it, if he had been here three or four years [ago] I believe I would have been part of him delivering big trophies for this club.

“It’s his aura and the way he is with you – how he makes you feel.

“I went out there to play in a friendly and I felt like it was the World Cup final. That’s what he gives players.

“We’re blessed to have him and hopefully we can go from strength to strength over the summer. Everyone is excited.”
