Juventus Rename Stadium Allianz Stadium

The Juventus home ground will be named the Allianz Stadium, after the club signed a new naming rights deal.

The name of the Italian champions will be called the Allianz Stadium until 2023 after signing a six-year deal.

Allianz already spomsors big name clubs like Bayern Munich and Nice, with the stadiums named Allianz Arena and Allianz Riveira respectively.

“It’s with great pleasure that we welcome Allianz into our family of partners for a deal as special as this one – the naming of our home,” said Giorgio Ricci, who serves as Juve’s head of global partnerships and corporate revenues as well as co-chief revenue officer.

“The arrival of a global giant in the insurance sector such as Allianz is further testament to how Juventus has established itself as a first-class international institution, whilst enriching a stadium that has played a significant role, since its inauguration in 2011, to creating history with six legendary Scudetto titles celebrated within its walls.

“Our ambition and objective is to collaborate with Allianz for the benefit of our supporters, just as with the other partners who have helped transform the stadium into a theatre, ensuring that each match is a show of entertainment and a welcoming place for families.”

44 Nigerian and Ghanaian Migrants ‘Die Of Thirst’ In Sahara Desert

Featured Image

About 40 migrants from Nigeria and Ghana are reported to have died of thirst in the Sahara Desert after their truck broke down in arid northern Niger.

The Red Cross while disclosing this to Reuters on Wednesday said the migrants, most of whom have not been identified, died this week.

It is understood that six survivors walked to a remote village where they said that 44 people, mostly from Ghana and Nigeria and including three babies and two other children, died of thirst.

Lawal Taher, the department head for the Red Cross in the Bilma region, said a search for the bodies was underway.

The number of migrants who cross the Sahara has increased in recent years as impoverished West Africans risk their lives to try to reach Europe.

In one of the most perilous parts of the journey, thousands of migrants each week are crammed into pickup trucks for the days-long ride from Niger into Libya, often with only enough room for a few litres of water.

Authorities and aid organisations are able to keep track of the thousands of migrant deaths in the Mediterranean Sea between Africa and Europe, but is it almost impossible to know how many have died in the vast and unpoliced Sahara.

Ronaldo: Fans Booing At Madrid Makes Me Miss United

Featured Image

Cristiano Ronaldo has stated that the boo boys at Real Madrid makes him miss Manchester United and playing in England.

Ronaldo has revealed his frustration at being booed by his fans ahead of the champions league final at Cardiff.

The four-time Ballon d’Or winner is happy at Real Madrid , but misses the support from the fans at Manchester United.

“I spent a lot of years at Manchester United and it [home fans booing] never happened to me. Not even once,” the 32-year-old told Spanish TV La Sexta ahead of the final in Cardiff.

“Maybe England is a case apart, the mentality is different.

“I’m very happy being in Spain but obviously I also miss England because you can’t just turn off the memories.

He said: “I don’t like it and it’s not normal that they whistle you in your own stadium. I just don’t like it.

“It shouldn’t be the case that a player who always wants to give his best and give 100 per cent for this team, when he makes his first mistake people whistle.

“It’s not correct. And when you are on a difficult run that is when you need extra support from outside, not less. Sometimes we don’t have it.”

Valverde: Coaching Messi Is A Different Experience

Featured Image

New Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde is looking forward to the opportunity of coaching Messi and hopes he continues to improve under his tutelage.

Valverde replaced Luis Enrique at Barcelona this week and was officially unveiled earlier today.

There were reports of tension between Enrique and Messi, something the former Athletic Bilbao manager wants to avoid.

“The biggest challenge for me will be to coach a great team full of great players,” Valverde said at a news conference.

“It will be a joy to coach Messi, a unique experience to coach the best player I have ever seen.

“I know that sometimes it looks like he has reached the absolute peak of his powers and then the next day he improves even more. My plan is to help him to keep improving and to enjoy working with him.

“Barcelona and the club’s philosophy are renowned all over the world. I have to adapt and to deepen that characteristic style that Barca have.

“I can count on great players like Leo, Iniesta and more. I consider Andres to be a very important player for the team and for the club.

“I want to help the players improve day after day and create a team spirit that we can rely on at the bad moments and the good moments. We want to bring joy to the fans all around the world and of course to win silverware, that is the main objective.”

Henry: Wenger Must Win Premier League Title

Featured Image

Thierry Henry says Wenger must now win the premier league title, after he signed a two-year renewal.

Arsenal failed to qualify for the champions league, finishing outside of the top four, for the first time in 20 years.

Despite that, Wenger was offered a renewal and Henry hopes his change in formation will help win the title .

Asked if Wenger’s decision to stay was correct, Henry told Sky Sports : “Time will tell.

“As an Arsenal fan, and as a guy who had Arsene as a coach and have maximum respect for him, I’m happy to see him at the club.

“They finished the season strong, although they have done that before. Raising yourself for the FA Cup final, to beat one team on one day is one thing. To do it over 38 games is a different story.”

Henry added: “Everyone is waiting for the title; the club, the players, the fans and Arsene himself.

“That’s what I want to see because raising your game for one day is one thing, but everybody is waiting for that to be done over 38 games.

“I can only go with what Wenger is saying. He says the team is good enough. He might buy one or two players having, as he’s claimed, created a dynamic to win the title finally. But I have heard that before and the year before, and the year before.

“Hopefully a change in system might be the thing that helps them win the title next year.”

Tobacco Laws: FG Introduces 9 New Regulations To Limit Smoking In Nigeria

Featured Image

As the world marked this year’s World No Tobacco Day on Wednesday, the Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, announced 9 regulations in the Nigeria Tobacco Control Act that would be implemented by the federal government.

The National Tobacco Control Act, which was signed into law in 2015 by former President Goodluck Jonathan, is aimed at reducing the use of tobacco in the country.

According to Premium Times reports, the theme for this year’s event, ‘Tobacco: A Threat to Development,’ also aims at highlighting the link between tobacco use and development as well as show that tobacco control can break the cycle of poverty, contribute to ending hunger, promote sustainable agriculture and economic growth, and combat climate change.

Below are the regulations listed by the minister to be implemented:

  1. Prohibition of the sale of tobacco products to and by anyone below age 18.
  2. Ban of sale of cigarettes in single sticks; cigarettes must be sold in packs of 20 sticks only.
  3. Smokeless tobacco shall be sold in a minimum of a pack of 30 grammes.
  4. Ban of sale or offer for sale or distribution of tobacco or tobacco products through mail, internet, or other online devices.
  5. Prohibition of interference of tobacco industry in public health and related issues.
  6. Prohibition of smoking in anywhere on the premises of a child care facility, educational facility, and healthcare facility. Other prohibited for smoking include playgrounds, amusement parks, plazas, public parks, stadia, public transport, restaurants’ bar, and other public gathering spaces.
  7. Prosecution of owner or manager of any of the places listed above who permits, encourages or fails to stop smoking in the above listed places.
  8. Prohibition of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship of any kind.
  9. Compliance with specified standards for content.

The Health Minister, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, had earlier said that the implementation of the tobacco control Act had been slow because the draft Regulations need the National Assembly approval.

The World Health Organization also revealed that tobacco kills over seven million people annually, and is an increasing risk factor in non-communicable (NCDs), including cardiovascular disease, cancers and chronic obstructed pulmonary disease.

BVN: Cybercriminals Target N3trn Trapped In Nigerian Banks

Featured Image

There are strong indications that hackers and cybercriminals are after the N3 trillion trapped in accounts that have not been linked to the Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) of their owners.

The Punch reports that financial technology experts in the country are blaming corruption for the development, even as they urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to urgently confiscate the funds or risk losing them to cyberattacks.

According to the experts, privileged information available to them showed that certain hackers, with collaborators from within the country and across the world, were developing a ransomware to attack banks’ data systems to steal the funds.

Speaking at a CxO roundtable facilitated by Ericsson and the International Data Corporation in Lagos on Wednesday, the experts stated that some of the abandoned funds were proceeds of corruption and needed to be cleared from the banking system.

Lending voice on the matter, the Senior Assistant to the Minister of Communications on Digital Transformation, Mr. Akim Yusuf, said “the corruption that has led to the trapped N3tn is being perpetrated by Nigerians who have no self-control.”

“The antidote will be to develop institutional mechanisms. We need to put in place mechanisms to monitor the flow of funds in the public sector. This is why we have introduced policies like the Treasury Single Account and the Biometric Verification Numbers.”

“We need to increase the level of digital tracking of funds to curb corruption. We plan to migrate all government services online. This will minimise the use of cash, which encourages bribery.”

The spokesman also said that there was also the need to consolidate and harmonise the multiple biometric data systems in the country to make it difficult to hide illicit funds.

“Digital transformation will drive all of these,” he added.

Also speaking, the Managing Director, Ericsson Nigeria, Rutman Rutger, said the firm put together the event to provide a platform for dialogue between all stakeholders in Nigeria’s technology and financial sectors “towards digital transformation in Nigeria and curbing corruption in the financial technology sector.”

“Since 2014, we have positively impacted 89 million people through our technology for good programmes,” he added.

The experts concluded that should the CBN remove the N3tn from the banks, it would create a serious liquidity challenge in the banking system.

Nigeria Uncovers Massive Fraud In Niger Delta Ministry Projects

Featured Image

The Nigerian government on Wednesday uncovered some shady deals by some of the contractors that handled projects in the Niger Delta region between 2009 and 2015, an official said.

According to the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Usani Uguru, while some of the contractors made away with the money paid them without appearing on the sites of the projects, some others managed to implement 12 per cent of the projects they were paid for.

Nigerian Govt To Terminate 6 Abandoned Projects In Niger Delta

The minister made this known while speaking to State House correspondents at the end of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Uguru further added that the discoveries were contained in a report of an investigation carried out by the ministry on all contracts awarded and projects carried out by the ministry from 2009 to 2015 – a period when the late Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan were the Presidents of the country.

The minister said the report revealed that over N423bn had been expended in the region by the ministry alone, adding that the amount did not include the sums expended by other intervention agencies.

“From this amount, projects execution rate has been at 12 per cent with an average completion rate of a project standing at five years. The impact rate is eight per cent,” he said.

He said he sought and got the council’s approval to make the report available to relevant government agencies in charge of recovering government assets that were either misappropriated, misused or found to be idling in some quarters.

The minister also said while those who deserved sanctions would be punished, others who needed to return to sites would be compelled to do so.

He said: “With this, it means all those who have accessed government resources for one purpose or another must be compelled to make adequate use of same, otherwise they will face the recommendation that goes with such violations.”

“That is our position concerning that report and we have received council’s approval for that.”

“Sixty per cent cost has been paid out to contractors with 12 per cent completion rate. Sixty per cent of the amount of money appropriated which is N700bn, 60 per cent of that constitutes N423bn.”

“To find that such money has been spent in that region with the kind of work we see, shows that there is something tangibly and obviously wrong with how procurement had been carried out in the ministry.”

“The number of projects awarded was 427 and there is no uniform action by each of the contractors. So, the measure of action to be taken to address the shortfall of our expectations or commitment to contractual agreements will be the determinant of what will be done.”

“Those that require sanctions will be sanctioned. The sanctions may not be uniform. It will be according to the measure of liabilities hold by each of the contractors.”

“Some will be compelled to return to site. Some, of course, should be made to refund money, those who we have seen by their actions displaying criminal intent by collecting money and not appearing at sites at all.”

“The report is not just all about punishing people. There are also those who have performed well and are commended and the report recommended that they should be encouraged to carry on in their contractual commitments.”

“The report has also recommended that sanction will be taken against officers. There are rules. I don’t know if they will amount to purge.”

Mr Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has promised Nigerian teachers that the National Assembly will increase their retirement age from 60 to 65 years to retain more experienced teachers in public schools.

The Speaker made this known on Wednesday when he received a delegation from the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) – led by Comrade Michael Alogba Olukoya – in Abuja.

Dogara further assured said that the house would support an upward review of teachers’ retirement age to benefit Nigerian children.

“We have done it for the Tertiary institutions and the Judiciary, so nothing should stop us from taking the bull by the horns.

“They say that wine gets better with age. It was the same consideration that motivated us to raise that of university lecturers, raised that of judges. So this is something we can pursue.

“Thankfully, it doesn’t require constitutional amendment, it is something we can achieve by amending the existing law.

“That is the responsibility of the parliament and we assure you that we will do something about that so that the benefit that comes with experience and wisdom will not be lost,” he said

Dogara said that the welfare and working condition of teachers must also be upgraded to enable Nigerian citizens compete with the global world and produce citizens that can achieve development that the country seeks.

“If we don’t have people who will sacrifice their time and energy to impact knowledge on our children, then like I said, we have lost the future.

“This government which is a government of change must be prepared to change the narrative by ensuring that teachers are motivated and the condition in which they work are conducive at all levels, so that they can deliver on their professional calling,” he said.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said on Wednesday that it had released 1,606,901 results out of the 1,718,425 that registered in the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

JAMB Denies Releasing Cut-Off Marks For 2017 UTME

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, the JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said the results were released within 24 hours of the examination, adding that the remaining 80,889 candidates results would be released soon.

He said it was also a deliberate act by the board to withhold about 76,925 results due to some alleged malpractices in some of the Computer Based Centres (CBT) where exams were held.

He said: “Six weeks into the registration, we harvested in preparation for the exam about 1.7 million registrations.

“But so far, we have released the results of 1,606,901 candidates leaving us with a balance of 80,889.

“Out of this 80,889, we have deliberately withheld 76,925 results for further investigation because of alleged malpractices.”

The registrar said that results would henceforth not be released immediately from 2018 unless every issues pertaining to the conduct of an examination had been thoroughly looked into which depict the international best practices.

He added that results that had not been released would be released before the commencement of admission exercise.

Oloyede also said that supplementary examination would be conducted soon for candidates who had hitches in the registration and examination processes.

Oloyede attributed some of the hitches to some CBT owners and cyber cafe operators.

“Anybody whose biometric could not be verified will be allowed to do the supplementary examination.

“As at today, 640 candidates out of 1.7million candidates did not do biometric verification, reasons being that some fraudsters registered candidates across online.

“In this case, the students are not guilty of the offence and hence will be made to write the exam again under my own very eyes.”
