TUC Warns Senate Over Plans To Increase Price Of Petrol

Featured Image

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has warned the Senate against plans to increase the pump price of petroleum products in the country.

In a statement issued on Friday by the President of the TUC, Mr. Bala Kaigama, and the Secretary General, Mr. Musa-Lawal Ozigi, the TUC warned that the organized Labour would resist any attempt to toy with the fuel pump price stressing that its patience had been stretched to its limit.

Kaigama and Ozigi also said that the TUC was also opposed to the plans to sell the nation’s stake in some oil and gas assets.

The Labour leaders further lamented that lawmakers and political officer holders had become rather insensitive to the plight of the suffering Nigerian citizenry.

The statement read: “The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria wishes to warn the Senate against further plans to impoverish Nigerians with the recent move to hike the prices of fuel, diesel, and even factor in other assorted charges and surcharges ‘to fund the Proposed National Roads Fund’.

“The Congress is also against the proposed sale or reduction of the nation’s stakes in some oil and gas assets. We are surprised that Nigerian lawmakers and other political office holders have become numb to our pains, agonies, and miseries. This is painful.”

Kaigama and Ozigi called on the President and well meaning Nigerians to prevail on the Senate to drop the provocative idea in the interest of the country.

“Well, the Congress hereby warns and calls on the presidency and well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on the Senate and everyone behind the ungodly moves to drop them. They will be resisted. Our patience is over-stretched and we would be able to contain it anymore. A word is enough for the wise.” They warned.

Featured Image

Thibaut Courtois has described international teammate Romelu Lukaku as a “great player” who could help Chelsea if he rejoins the club

Romelu Lukaku may be sold by the Toffees if a large enough offer is tabled, knowing that the striker is now into the final two years of his current Goodison Park deal.

Chelsea sold the 24-year-old to Everton for £28m three years ago, but Courtois hopes to get the chance to line up in the same side as his Belgian compatriot come the start of next season.

“Romelu is a great player so if he decides to go to Chelsea or Chelsea decide to sign him I would be happy to see him in the dressing room in July,” he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.

“I guess if it’s the right offer he might go. It’s up to him to decide.”

Lukaku scored 25 times in the Premier League last season, only Harry Kane scored more, 29 goals

Sergio Ramos Is Like A Big Brother To Me- Mesut Ozil

Featured Image

Mesut Ozil has hailed “big brother” Sergio Ramos and claimed that the Real Madrid captain’s never-say-die spirit sets him apart from his peers.

Ozil won one La Liga title and the Copa del Rey during his three years at the Bernabeu, before departing for Arsenalin 2013 for a fee of £42.5m.

“When I was in Madrid, Sergio Ramos lived on the same road and I did a lot with him,” he told Arsenal’s official website. “He was like a big brother to me. He showed me Madrid and helped me to settle quicker, just as Sami Khedira did. He lives in a similar way to my culture, to how I grew up.

“He keeps his closest friends around him and tries to have fun in life, just as I did. We had a great time together back then. We’re still in contact. Of course it’s not the same as before because he lives in Madrid and I’m in London, but we will write to each other now and then.

“He’s not one of the best central defenders in the world or in the history of football for no reason. He just wants to be successful and you see on the pitch that he never gives up, right until the last second where some players might say ‘Oh, it’s over’. But his attitude – he’s always there for the team and I’m pleased for him when he scores goal and is successful.”

“This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I’m looking forward to getting started. It’s an exciting challenge,” Kenny Jackett told Pompey’s official website.

Giggs: Griezmann Is Still On United’s Radar

Featured Image

Manchester United legend, Ryan Giggs believes United’s need for a goalscorer could still see them make a move for Antoine Griezmann.

United appeared to have cooled their interest in the Atletico Madrid forward, after he committed to the club.

Griezmann now has a buyout clause of £87 million, but Giggs does not think United’s interest has died down.

Giggs, the most decorated player in United’s history, told Sky Sports News HQ: “I’m not so sure if we’ve heard the end of that. I think it’ll be ebb and flow during the summer, there’ll be lots of rumours.

“United need goals. All the teams I played in there were goals from everywhere. Sometimes you’d rely on a centre-forward for a season, but more often than not you had midfielders, even defenders, wingers and obviously the forwards all contributing.”

Giggs said: “They lack goals. There was too much dependence on Ibrahimovic and obviously, they’ll miss him at least for the start of the season.

“They need to bring players in who’ll score goals, and one goalscorer who’s going to get 20-plus.”

Pep Guardiola Reveals How Much He Loves Manchester Food

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola has revealed he is enjoying life at Manchester City – even if Mediterranean food is ‘much better’ than what is on offer.

Pep Guardiola has immersed himself in Manchester’s culture since taking charge at the Etihad last summer and lives in a plush apartment in the city with his wife and two children.

Guardiola has regularly been spotted out and about in Manchester at hot spots ranging from Bem Brazil on King Street to Revolucion de Cuba on Deansgate in recent months.

And, a year on from his appointment, the 46-year-old admits the rain has not put him off after guiding the Blues to third place in the Premier League in his first season.

“[I’m enjoying it] a lot,” he told fan Alex Naylor as part of Betsafe’s #AskTheManager campaign

“I know it’s not the best weather in the world, I know it’s not the most beautiful city in the world but that’s what makes Manchester so special.”

Guardiola’s wide-ranging career in football has seen him play in Spain, Italy, Qatar and Mexico and manage Barcelona, Bayern Munich and, of course, City.

But it seems the one thing he has yet to get to grips with is traditional British grub.

“I’m a Catalan guy so Mediterranean food is much better than yours, I’m sorry, in that we are better.

“If you don’t agree you should go to Italy and Spain in the summer time because the food is better than here.”

Guardiola was a regular at Oktoberfest while managing Bayern Munich and soon became acquainted with Bavaria’s finest lagers.

But one local tipple he has has yet to sample is Boddingtons – made famous by Melanie Sykes and that advert in 1992.

“The first time I will try Manchester Boddingtons, I will tell you which I prefer because I’ve never tried Manchester Boddingtons,” he admits.

FG Alerts Nigerians On Outbreak Of Avian Influenza (Birdflu)

Featured Image

The Federal Government on Friday alerted the public to the outbreak of Avian Influenza or Birdflu in the FCT and seven states of the country.

Dr Gideon Mshelbwala, the Director of Veterinary and Pest Control Services, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development raised the alert at a meeting with state Commissioners of Agriculture in Abuja on Friday.

Mshelbwala listed the states affected by the outbreak to include Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Nasarawa, Plateau, FCT and lastly Kaduna, which reported a case in May 30.

He said that the disease had spread across 26 states of the federation and the FCT since it started in 2008 affecting 800 farms in no fewer than 123 local government areas.

Mshelbwala, who said that there were no scientifically proven vaccines for birdflu, noted that the Federal Government was adopting quarantine, movement control, stamping out, decontamination and bio-security measures to curb the spread.

The director expressed regret over the poor bio-security practices by some poultry farmers, adding that it was the major reason for the continuous spread of the disease.

According to him, the Federal Government has paid over N674 million in compensations to 269 farmers across the affected states.

“Our national action plan encourages proper regulation of the poultry industry and enforcement of annual registration of all actors along the poultry value chain including farmers, traders, egg merchants and feed millers.

“It also encourages the creation of veterinary extension services to facilitate the control and proper inspection of poultry and poultry products,’’ he said.

Mshelbwala said that the way forward to the containment of the disease was to ban importation of poultry and products, quarantine and bio-security measures, among others.

He, however, warned poultry farmers against illegal vaccination of birds, saying that it was a deadly alternative to the control of the disease.

Report: Everton Now Confident Of Signing Sandro Ramirez From Malaga

Featured Image

Everton are interested in signing the Malaga striker Sandro Ramirez, according to Sky sports. And they are now favourites to win his signature, after Atletico Madrid failed to overturn their transfer ban.

Sandro came through the famous Barcelona Academy, and the 21-year old impressed in his first season with Malaga, scoring 16 goals. It looked likely that he would move to Atletico this summer, but the Court for Arbitration in Sport have upheld Atletico’s transfer ban, meaning they can’t register or play any new players until January.

With the Spanish giants out of the race, sources close to Everton are now hopeful of persuading Sandro to move to the Premier League. He would reportedly cost around £5million

On Thursday morning, the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld FIFA’s ban on Atletico signing players this summer which inevitably put Atletico out of the race for Sandro.

Crystal Palace Looking To Appoint Long-term Manager

Featured Image

Crystal Palace are looking for a long-term manager who is sympathetic to the playing style of the team after the departure of Sam Allardyce earlier this month, the club’s chairman Steve Parish has said.

Parish is hopeful that Crystal Palace  can sign a coach similar to Steve Coppell, who had a nine-year spell from 1984-93 before multiple stints in the mid to late 90s.

“We really want somebody who feels they can come in and help us improve the footballing side of the club over a long period of time,” Parish told American radio station SiriusXM FC.

“That is what we are looking for. In the past we have had managers like Steve Coppell who have been at the club a long time and helped build the club. If we could get one of those relationships again that would be preferable.”

Parish said he wanted a manager who would build on, rather than change, the playing style that has kept the club in the top flight for the past four seasons.

He added: “We have got a personnel and a way of playing. It has served us well. Do we try and change that again?

“That will inform probably where we go on the list of managers. After that you are just looking for somebody who has got a long-term view for the club.”
