Naira Gains As CBN Injects $190 million Into FOREX Market

Featured Image

In a relentless bid to achieve convergence of rates between the interbank and Bureau de Change segments of the foreign exchange market (FOREX), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has injected another $190 million into the market.

This was made in a statement issued by the acting director, Corporate Communications, CBN, Isaac Okorafor, on Monday in Abuja.

According to him, $100 million was offered as wholesale interventions and $50 million was allocated to the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) FOREX window.

He said $40 million was also allocated to accommodate customers requiring FOREX for business, Personal Travel Allowances, tuition and medical fees.

Mr. Okorafor said Naira had made tremendous gain against the dollar in recent times.

He said FOREX rates at both the inter-bank and BDC segments had almost converged, prompting even greater optimism that the value of the Naira would continue to spike.

Mr. Okorafor observed that by ensuring transparency in the market as well as fairness to end-users, the CBN had further exposed speculators and checkmated them.

He, therefore, urged all dealers, particularly licensed BDCs, to continue to play by the rule, adding that the CBN would not hesitate to wield the big stick against any erring bank or dealer.

Mr. Okorafor said the CBN had also released new guidelines to further develop the foreign exchange market and improve its structure.

“The new circular, among other provisions, allows authorised dealers to sell their excess foreign currency to other authorised dealers without seeking prior approval from the CBN,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Naira continues to maintain its strong stand against major currencies around the globe, exchanging for N364 for one dollar in the BDC segment of the market on Monday.

Will Nigeria Survive The Death Of Big Oil?, By Uddin Ifeanyi

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

For the second time in seven months, OPEC and its non-member collaborators agreed last month, to continue to “do everything necessary” to drive an increase in global oil prices. As with their agreement late last year, members are expected to maintain a 1.8 million barrels a day reduction in output levels up to March next year.

This article was written by Uddin Ifeanyi. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

As an oil producing economy who’s near-total dependence on earnings from the stuff meant that we went through the last crisis in the market on life-support, this is great news. It helps too that OPEC’s decision to exclude both Libya and Nigeria from the production-cutting arrangements conflates with our pacification of militancy in the oil-rich Niger Delta region to hold out the prospects of improved oil production and ancillary increase in foreign earnings.

Still, despite its best efforts, the new oil producers’ arrangement has not moved the price of oil beyond the US$50 per barrel (pb) mark. In part, this was because the cutbacks in production which was agreed on were not enough to dent the pre-existing glut in the oil market that had helped push prices down in the first place. Now, giving that most OPEC members need oil to sell at about US$100pb if their respective budgets are to break-even, US$50pb oil simply won’t do. On the other hand, further production cuts will hurt most members, especially Saudi Arabia, and so are unlikely.

Nonetheless, by far the biggest source of downward pressure on global oil prices over the last three years, is the result of oil exploration and production in the US. In turn, much of this owes to hydraulic fracking of shale oil deposits. Not too long ago, this new technology was considered too expensive to be anything but a sideline to the global oil market. Yet, supply of U.S. shale oil ultimately played a crucial part in ending the global commodity super-cycle. Today, shale oil production in the US is nothing of the marginal play that it was supposed to be, and the U.S. has ridden on the back of exploration activities to become one of the world’s leading producers of the stuff.

Only last week, drillers in the U.S. were reported to have added 11 new rigs to their operations. According to data from Baker Hughes, an energy services company, this then makes last week’s addition the 20th week in which U.S. drillers have added additional capacity back-to-back. With production in the U.S. adding another 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) last week, the U.S. Energy Information Administration now expects output in the country to reach 10 million bpd in 2018.

If OPEC underestimated the production threat from shale the first time, it has done so consistently thereafter. First, the sense was that below US$70pb, the shale industry will go bust. And go bust a lot of them did. But the market then adjusted, and producers have continued to leverage financial engineering opportunities to continue financing their operations, while deploying an assortment of hedging instruments, to help manage price fluctuations.

If shale is the oil industry’s worst near-term bugbear, sundry other gremlins loom over the longer-term. Demand, for instance, for fossil fuels will be undermined by the increasing roles played by renewables (wind, solar, waves, etc.) in the global energy mix. Considerable efficiencies in these technologies have seen them account for a larger share of generation in both the OECD countries and China. True, intermittency is still a worry — electricity generated by renewables, is by definition unpredictable (solar, for instance tapers off at night), even as most grids were originally structured to deliver steady output to their consumers. But then bigger and more efficient batteries and snazzy engineering fixes mean that even this might not remain a problem for long.

Bigger and more efficient batteries also support the threat to big oil from another new sector. Electric vehicles (Tesla’s market capitalisation only recently overtook Ford’s, despite the former producing far fewer cars than the latter) would eat out of this pie too. As would expectations of improvements in the energy efficiency of the Chinese and Indian economies. It would seem on current trends, that these biggish rapidly- developing economies would start using up far less energy in producing more goods at an earlier stage in their development than most industrialised economies did.

Big oil, therefore might be witnessing its last hurrah. Oil-dependent economies like ours should worry. For while oil may have warped our internal workings, its abundance has helped hold together social organisations devoted solely to rent-seeking. Without a pivot towards saner husbandry of the economy, and away from oil, the demise of big oil might presage the unravelling of this space.

Hearn: Joshua-Klitschko Rematch Is Happening

Featured Image

Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn says the next fight for Anthony Joshua is a rematch against Wladimir Klitschko.

Joshua beat Klitschko in their first match in April and a rematch is set for maybe November or December, with a venue yet to be determined.

Klitschko is expected to meet with manager Bernd Boente this week, with a fight against Joshua, who holds the IBF and WBA ‘super’ belt to be agreed.

Hearn told Sky Sports: “I feel like it’s Wladimir Klitschko. People keep saying is there a deadline? The situation is the fight is happening unless we are told otherwise by Bernd Boente and Wladimir Klitschko, who have a meeting this week.

“So many offers this week – Nigeria, Dubai, America, and also we have the opportunity of Cardiff here in the UK.

“Financially, Cardiff’s not the best choice, but also at the same time, if it’s not broke don’t fix it, and we have that mentality with ‘AJ’ moving forward.

“Over the next two weeks we are going to look at all those opportunities and sift out the ones that are real and the ones that make sense, and look at where the fight will be. But in our minds moving forward, it’s Wladimir Klitschko next.”

Kane: I’m A Leader In The England Squad

Featured Image

Tottenham star Harry Kane sees himself as a leader in the three lions squad and wants to be a long-term captain for the squad.

The Premier League highest goal scorer is set to lead the squad against Scotland in the World Cup qualifier on Saturday.

This is Kane’s first game under Southgate, having missed the last six games due to injury.

“I see myself as one of the leaders now in the team and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

“I’m only 23 but I feel that there are a lot of younger players in the team compared to me and I have a good relationship with them.

“I have a good relationship with all the players – the older, the younger – and there are quite a few Spurs boys in there as well. It helps as we play with each other, train with each other day-in, day-out, so we know each other very well on the pitch, but off the pitch also.

“If someone is feeling a bit down, or if they’re not quite right then we are there to know that and help them out.”

Patrice Evra Defends Jose Mourinho’s Style Of Football

Featured Image

Former Manchester United defender has insisted that the criticism aimed at Jose Mourinho due to his perceived negative style of play is unjustified.

Jose Mourinho saw his favoured playing system questioned in a season that ended with the Red Devils finishing sixth in the Premier League, 24 points adrift of champions Chelsea.

Mourinho guided his side into the Champions League via success in the Europa League, however, as well as lifting the EFL Cup, and Evra – a member United’s exciting 2008 European winners – has moved to defend the former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss.

“This year they qualified for the Champions League and some people said they did not play good football, but we are not in the circus,” he told MUTV. “They have been criticised a lot. A lot of people are jealous about Man United so they just keep criticising, even when they win.

“If you want to enjoy football then, yes 2008 was great and different, but people have to forget that and concentrate on this current Manchester United team. That would be my message to the United fans.

“We need to be behind Man United always when they win or lose. If you love Man United you should never criticise them, you need to support them. When a player has a bad game, the fans never boo him.”

Josh Bowler Rejects New QPR Contract Amid Eveton Interest

Featured Image

Everton remain favourites to land QPR‘s teenage star Josh Bowler following news that the midfielder has this morning turned down a new contract at Loftus Road.

Bowler only signed professional terms in February before making his first team debut in Rangers’ 4-0 defeat at Norwich on the final day of the Championship season.

Rangers rejected Everton’s initial £3m bid a fortnight ago and are trying hard to keep the talent in West London with a new deal and the likelihood of more first team opportunities.

However, According to Sky Sports Bowler has rejected a new offer and looks increasingly likely to move to Goodison to join Ronald Koeman’s efforts to assemble some of the finest young British talents in the Premier League.

Bowler joined Rangers in 2013 after being released by Fulham. Everton’s initial offer for the teenager is understood to have been £1.5m plus add-ons, rising to £3m.

Borussia Dortmund Complete Signing Of Paris Saint-Germain Prodigy Dan-Axel Zagadou

Featured Image

Borussia Dortmund have announced the signing of French youngster Dan-Axel Zagadou from Paris Saint-Germain.

The left-footed centre-back, who had been linked with Manchester City, will move to the Bundesliga when his PSG contract runs out this summer.

The 18-year-old said he chose the German club because of their record of working with youngsters.

“I have deliberately opted for Dortmund because this big club always succeeds in integrating young players and developing them at the highest level,” he told the German club’s official website. “I really want to mature into an established professional footballer in Dortmund.”

The German club’s sporting director, Michael Zorc, told Dortmund’s official website of his delight at the deal’s completion: ‘As of July, Dan-Axel Zagadou will be a full member of our professional team.

‘We are fully convinced of the abilities of the player and look forward to helping him make his next development steps as a BVB professional.

Zagadou is the latest in a long line of whizzkids to have moved from a Ligue 1 side to Dortmund in recent times, with Ousmane Dembele and Raphael Guerreiro having blossomed since moving from France to the Westfalenstadion.

He becomes BVB’s third signing of the summer, with deals already in place for Bayer Leverkusen centre half Omer Toprak, 27, and Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud, 21.

Report: Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny Set To Join Juventus

Featured Image

Juventus have reportedly agreed a deal in principle to sign Wojciech Szczesny for €16m (around £14m) from Arsenal.

The Italian champions have reached agreement with the Poland international over a four-year contract worth £3.5m per season.

Szczesny has impressed the domestic double-winners during a two-season spell on loan at rivals Roma, who finished runners-up to Juventus in Serie A this season.

However, the 27-year-old is likely to spend his first season as understudy to Gianluigi Buffon, 39, who is set to retire after the final year of his current contract in Turin.

Szczesny joined Arsenal’s academy from Legia Warsaw in 2006 and made a total of 181 appearances for the Gunners’ first team.

The 27-year-old signed a long-term deal in November 2013 to keep him at the Emirates until 2018.

Anthony Martial Has ‘No Reason’ To Quit Manchester United – Agent

Featured Image

Anthony Martial’s agent has poured scorn on speculation linking the Manchester United forward with an exit this summer.

A testing second season, which yielded just eight goals and public criticism from manager Jose Mourinho, has seen question marks rise over Martial’s future.

But his agent, Philippe Lamboley, told Journal du Dimanche: “Martial has two years left and there is no reason for him to leave Manchester today.

“I would like every 21-year-old player to have already played 180 games with the pros,” Lamboley told Journal du Dimanche.

“Anthony’s career is quite simply exceptional. He has two years left on his contract, and there is no reason today for him to leave Manchester.

“If Ed Woodward [United vice-president] calls me to tell me he wishes to see him leave, things will be different. But that’s not what he said to me during our last meeting.”

Following his 2015 arrival from Monaco, Anthony Martial, 21, made 32 Premier League appearances in his maiden season in England — all but two of which were starts — while netting 11 times under Louis van Gaal to finish as United’s leading scorer.

However, his progress was stunted following the arrival of Jose Mourinho last summer, the success of new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the flourishing of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, all of which contributed to limiting the France international’s opportunities last term.

Barcelona Considering Summer Bid For Borussia Dortmund Star Ousmane Dembele

Featured Image

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona could be set to make a move for Borussia Dortmund‘s young French forward Ousmane Dembele, who tops their wishlist this summer.

The departure of Thomas Tuchel and the possible sale of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has reportedly convinced the 20-year-old that he is now ready to move to Spain.

Under the guidance of Tomas Tuchel, Ousmane Dembele bagged six goal and 12 assists in his debut season in Germany, and was looking to kick on next term.

New Barca boss Ernesto Valverde is looking to additional attacking options – after going cold on Barca academy graduate Gerard Deulofeu.

The Everton winger was on-loan at AC Milan, and was thought to be close to an emotional return to his first club.

But the appointment of Valverde looks to have blocked a potential return to Catalonia.

Southgate: Hart Is Good With His Feet

Gareth Southgate has no issue with Joe Hart’s ball possession, as he feels he is good with his feet.

Pep Guardiola sent the England international out on loan when he joined City, citing his possession as a problem.

Hart conceded 58 goals in his first season at Torino, an outcome club president Urbano Cairo did not expect. Nevertheless, England manager, Southgate remains impressed with him.

“I read the comments of the president, but frankly that could be related to the fact they know they can’t keep him,” Southgate said. “For me, it’s been a real positive. He had to make a quick decision on where he played and he’s seen a different league.

“From our point of view, he’s been asked to play out from the back which I think he’s dealt with it very, very well.

“His impact for us has been excellent. And he’s recognised that he’s missed something this season as regards the level of games and the environment he’d been in previously.

“He’s another player who wants to be the best he possibly can and he’s pretty self-critical.

“But he’s got that drive to be a top player. It will be interesting to see what happens for him in the summer.

“He’s been asked to play with his feet this season. They play out in quite tight areas.

FIRS Introduces 6 Key Online Solutions For Payment Of Taxes (See List)

Featured Image

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has introduced six key electronic solutions (e-Services) to enhance convenience, transparency and round the clock processing and payment of taxes.

Tobacco Laws: FG Introduces 9 New Regulations To Limit Smoking In Nigeria

In a statement issued, the agency said some of the e-Services, which could now be accessed online, are:

  1. Taxpayer registration (through e-Registration)
  2. Payment of Stamp Duties (through e-Stamp Duty)
  3. Payment of taxes (through online payment: e-TaxPay, Remita)
  4. Receiving of electronic receipt after payment of taxes (through e-Receipt)
  5. Filing tax returns online (through e-filing)
  6. Online Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC) through electronic Tax Clearance Certificate (e-TCC solution)

The statement quoted the executive chairman, FIRS, Tunde Fowler as saying that the e-Services innovation represent “a revolution in tax administration in Nigeria. The idea behind the six ICT solutions is to make tax payment as easy as ABC, to bring convenience to our taxpayers.”

‘‘The ICT solutions which we are bringing to the doorsteps of taxpayers will ensure that taxpayers could pay, get receipt, and get TCC from the comfort of their homes and offices anytime, anywhere in the world and round the clock. This saves the time of taxpayers, is transparent, fast, easy to use and convenient.’’

Also, according to the statement, the implication of e-Receipt is that when tax payments are made, an electronic notification will be automatically sent to the taxpayer’s email and or phone number within 24 hours after payment.

‘‘If for any reason a taxpayer loses the print out, they can access FIRS e-Receipt platform by log in into the FIRS website and download their receipt. This process eliminates manual interventions.

‘‘The e-TCC provides an e-repository of all Tax Clearance Certificates (TCCs) issued by FIRS. It enables FIRS Staff and authorised third parties to obtain their TCC online without visiting a tax office. E-TCC reduces incidence of fraudulent certificates. E-TCCs are automatically sent to the emails of taxpayers. Taxpayers can also request for and print their TCCs online,’’ the statement read in part.

Bale: Madrid Can Get Better

Featured Image

This is the first time since 1958 that Real Madrid has won the La Liga and UCL double, but Bale believes they can get better.

Los Blancos eased to the Champions League win, after defeating Juventus 4-1 at Cardiff on Saturday.

Bale sees no reason why Madrid cannot win more major trophies that will put them at a higher pedestal.

The Wales international told reporters as Madrid celebrated their latest Champions League triumph: “I don’t see why we can’t be in that company. We have won the Champions League three times in four seasons so we have to be in that category.

“All we can keep doing is keep working hard and hopefully there will be more to come.”

He added: “We can get even better. We are still quite young as a whole team and we have a great squad.

“We haven’t just got a great XI, we have a great squad so if any injuries come along there are other people who can do a job.

“We are strong at the moment. We are very confident and the plan is to win more.”

Wojciech Szczesny is set to return to Arsenal in the summer, amid reports that Juventus are interested in him.

However, Roma’s President, Jim Pallotta insists the Poland international is keen on staying at the club.

Szczesny is still under contract at Arsenal and has registered a desire to return and prove himself to Wenger.

Pallotta said of the 27-year-old: “He told me that he wanted to stay with us.

“I’ll say more, I was surprised by the fact some of the players I thought had wanted to leave came up to me before and after the final game to say they wanted to remain.

“It’s a sign we’ve got a good group, we just lack some depth and Monchi will help us with that.

“Our youth academy products have a lot of talent and they will no longer be loaned out all over the place. We’ll put them at the disposal of our squad.”
