Liverpool have since apologised for their approach of Van Dijk and the Premier League is satisfied with the apology.

Liverpool, whose manager Jurgen Klopp has been taking a central role in summer recruitment, said on Wednesday: “Liverpool would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs.

Espanyol Trying To Sign Real Madrid’s Striker Mariano Diaz

Featured Image

Espanyol are working on a deal to sign Real Madrid hitman Mariano on loan, reports Sport.

The Barcelona-based club are looking to create a squad ready to challenge for a European place next term, and they have identified Mariano as the man to lead their attack.

Espanyol have been trying to secure his services for a while, but it will be a tricky deal to pull off as several teams have contacted Real Madrid to express their interest in the forward.

Mariano, 23, scored five times in 14 appearances for Madrid last season, although just one of those efforts came in La Liga.

It is understood that the Dominican Republic international is highly-rated at the Bernabeu, although head coach Zinedine Zidane believes that a spell away from the club would be the best option next season.

Manchester United Must Pay £87m Clause To Sign Andrea Belotti

Featured Image

Torino president Urbano Cairo has said that it would take a bid of £87m to price Andrea Belotti away from the club this summer.

Andrea Belotti has been linked with a move to Manchester United after their pursuit of Antoine Griezmann ended earlier this month, with Belotti having scored 26 goals for mid-table Torino during the 2016-17 Serie A campaign.

Cairo insists that he is not considering selling the striker, but admits that he will be powerless to prevent a move should his minimum release clause be met.

“I’m not thinking about selling Belotti. Belotti is my player, we only renewed his contract recently. Our objective is to keep him,” Cairo is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News.

“After that, there is a release clause that would make me obliged to sell him, providing someone came in with €100m from abroad.

“Let’s see. I haven’t talked to him yet because he is currently with the national team. We will see how things go, but our intention would be to keep him.”

Tottenham’s Kyle Walker Gives ‘No Clues’ Where He Will Be Next Season

Featured Image

Kyle Walker has insisted that the ongoing speculation over his future at the club is not a distraction.

Kyle Walker  earned a place in the PFA Team of the Year for his performances in helping Spurs to second in the Premier League, but he has been linked with a move away from the North London club following reports of a falling-out with manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona have been credited with an interest in the right-back

When asked whether the speculation is a distraction, Walker told Sky Sports News: “Not at all. I mean, you know coming away from club football kind of gives you a little bit of head space.

“I am an England player now and I am fully focused on a massive game on Saturday. We need to go and get the three points.”

Asked whether he could give an indication on where he would be next season, Walker then added: “No, no indication at all.”

Walker joined Spurs in 2009 and has gone on to make 228 appearances for the club.

Pochettino preferred Kieran Trippier for some big matches towards the end of the season, including the north London derby against Arsenal and FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

Impressive displays on such occasions have led to a first senior England call-up for Trippier, meaning he now stands in Walker’s way at international level as well.

‘I think it has pushed us both on as players, most definitely,’ Walker said of the competition at club level with Trippier.

‘We get the best out of each other and, even if Tripps plays or I play, we’ve said privately to each other that we will helpp each other on.

‘I don’t ever say a bad word or wish bad on him because it’s more about the team rather than individual performances.

‘We’re putting on our England shirt now and whoever gets the nod I am sure the other one will be fully behind it.

El-Rufai Orders ‘Immediate’ Arrest Of Groups That Want Igbo People Out Of Northern Nigeria

Featured Image

The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has ordered the immediate arrest of all signatories to a statement issuing a three-month ultimatum to all Igbos to leave northern Nigeria.

El-Rufai, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan, on Wednesday, also assured residents in the state of “their freedom to reside where they choose”, adding that the “constitutional right of every Nigerian to own property, move freely and to live in peace and harmony is sacrosanct”.

Biafra: Groups Order Igbo People Out Of Northern Nigeria Within 3 Months

A coalition of Northern groups, including the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, had on Tuesday, gave all Igbos residing in the 19 states of the North a three-month ultimatum to quit or be forced out after the expiration of the October 1, 2017, deadline.

It also directed all Northerners in the South-East to get prepared to come back home.

The groups’ grievance is not unconnected to the success of a recent sit-at-home order enforced by the Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra on May 30, 2017 which the five South-East states complied with.

However, the Kaduna State Government condemned the youths’ action in the statement.

The statement reads in part, “The Kaduna State Government condemns in the strongest terms the press statement by some self-appointed “northern youths” that threatened the safety and property of our citizens of Igbo extraction. Government assures every resident of our state that their constitutional and human rights to live peacefully and own property wherever they choose is sacrosanct. Even people who may feel unhappy about irresponsible comments or actions that have taken place in other states must know that two wrongs cannot make a right.

“The Kaduna State Government believes in and will uphold the right of every Nigerian to live safely and develop his/her full potentials within its territory.

“Reckless disregard for the rights of other citizens drips through the press statement by these “northern youths” who have chosen to use the discourse around restructuring to promote their own agenda of hate, division and incitement. This sort of opportunists cannot be allowed to distort debate, or turn it into a pretext for a barely-disguised agenda of displacement and dispossession of some citizens.

“We will not tolerate such irresponsible statements and conduct in our state. The statement issued by the “northern youths” violates the laws of Kaduna State. Therefore, the Kaduna State Government has directed that its Ministry of Justice should prepare charges and prosecute the signatories and anyone complicit in arranging this egregious assault on the rights of fellow citizens.

“Preparatory to prosecution, the police have been directed to immediately arrest, interrogate the signatories to the statement and investigate all the circumstances and persons that may be implicated in the matter.

“The Kaduna State Government urges all residents to ignore the threats from the “northern youths”. We are in contact with the leadership of the Igbo community in Kaduna, and we delighted to say that this community, like all our other communities, believes in the strength of the constitutional order to protect all citizens.

“KDSG wishes to encourage all our people to celebrate the diversity with which the Almighty has blessed us, to continue to shun agents of division, and to stand firm in upholding a common humanity. Everyone has a right to live in peace and harmony.”

Biafra: Groups Order Igbo People Out Of Northern Nigeria Within 3 Months

Featured Image

A coalition of Northern groups, including the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, on Tuesday, gave all Igbo people currently residing in the 19 states of the North a three-month ultimatum to quit or be forced out after the expiration of the October 1, 2017 deadline.

Speaking on behalf of the groups, the National President, (AYCF), Yerima Shettima, at a press conference in Kaduna, also said:

“We are also telling our brothers (northerners) out there in the South-East to get prepared to come back home.”

The ultimatum came on the back of a successful sit-at-home order enforced by the Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on May 30, 2017 which the five South-East states complied with.

The ultimatum was handed down at a well attended press conference held at the Arewa House, Kaduna, on Tuesday.

The text of the press conference was signed by Nastura Ashir Sharif (Arewa Citizens Action for Change); Alhaji Shettima Yerima (Arewa Youth Consultative Forum); Aminu Adam (Arewa Youth Development Foundation); Alfred Solomon, (Arewa Students Forum); Abdul-Azeez Suleiman (Northern Emancipation Network), as well as Joshua Viashman, who signed on behalf of the Northern Youth Vanguard.

The National President of the Northern Emancipation Network, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, who read the text of the press conference, noted that the Igbo  had become a threat to national unity.

He said: “With the effective date of this declaration, which is today, Tuesday, June 6, 2017, all Igbo currently residing in any part of northern Nigeria are, hereby, served notice to relocate within three months and all northerners residing in the South-East are advised likewise.

“All northern civil societies and pressure groups are, by this declaration, mandated to mobilise for sustained, coordinated campaigns at their respective state Government Houses, state Houses of Assembly, local government council secretariats and traditional palaces.

“Our first major move shall be to reclaim, assume and assert sole ownership and control of these landed resources currently owned, rented or in any way enjoyed by the …Igbo in any part of northern Nigeria.”

Suleiman warned that the failure of the Igbo to heed the relocation order, the group would mobilise the people of region against them (Igbo).

Recovery Of N11.6 Billion: Nigeria Pays 20 Whistleblowers N375.8 Million

Featured Image

The federal government has said it had released about N375.8 million for payment of 20 whistleblowers who provided information that led to the recovery of over N11.6 billion.

This disclosure was confirmed in a statement on Wednesday by the Ministry of Finance, Kemi Adeosun.

She said the payments were the first under the Whistleblower Policy.

The government did not disclose the identities of the beneficiaries, apparently for security reasons.

“This payment is the first under the Whistleblower Policy,” she said in the statement.

“The payment underscores the commitment of the President Muhmmadu Buhari-led administration to meet its obligations to information providers under the Whistleblower Policy, which is an essential tool in the fight against corruption.”

The minister said recent amendments to the Whistleblower Policy of the government include the introduction of a formal legal agreement between information providers and the Federal Government.

“The agreement is executed by the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation,” she said.

“In line with the policy, each whistleblower would be entitled to a minimum of five per cent of the money involved in the corruption case reported.”

“The payment of the money would however be made after the successful recovery of the affected sum to government coffers, while informants whose info provide false hint, risk prosecution and jail.”

FG Insists As Ex-Senate Leader Ndume Denies Supporting Boko Haram

Featured Image

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday attended to the no-case submission filed by a former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, seeking an order terminating his trial on terrorism charges preferred against him by the Federal Government.

The former senate leader, through his no-case submission, is seeking an order discharging him of the charges, including the allegation of supporting Boko Haram, and failure to disclose material information arising from his alleged relationship with the sect.

His no-case submission was anchored on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to lead evidence linking him to the alleged offences.

The no-case submission was further anchored on section 303 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, among other provisions of the same law.

While denying the charges on Tuesday, Ndume broke the silence on how he came in contact with the sect and how he disclosed the necessary information about his interaction with the sect to the then Vice-President and the then Director General of the Department of State Services.

But the Federal Government insisted on Tuesday that it had led sufficient evidence showing Ndume’s complicity in the alleged offences, thus the need for him to offer some explanations.

Meanwhile, after much deliberation and arguments, the presiding judge, Justice Gabriel Kolawole fixed 2pm on July 4 for ruling on the matter.

On December 12, 2011, the Nigerian government had arraigned Ndume on four counts of terrorism.

The prosecution had alleged a link between Ndume and a suspected member of Boko Haram, Ali Konduga, who had since been convicted and sentenced on terrorism charges.

Ndume was accused of, among others, sponsoring the Boko Haram sect, and failing to disclose the phone number of Konduga, which was alleged to be in his (Ndume’s) possession.

He had pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Osinbajo Writes N’Assembly, Seeks $1.94bn Loans For 10 States

Featured Image

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has written a letter to the Senate and the House of Representatives, seeking them to separate the $1.49bn meant for projects in 10 states from the 2016-2018 External Borrowing (Rolling) Plan of the Federal Government.

This, according to the acting president, was to enable the National Assembly to give accelerated hearing to the loan request so that projects would be quickly executed in the affected states.

The states are Ogun, Ondo, Kaduna, Kano, Ebonyi, Plateau, Abia, Katsina, Jigawa and Enugu.

It is understood that the states have projects tied to a total loan value of $1.49bn under the external borrowing plan.

Osinbajo’s letter was read to members of both chambers of the National Assembly on Tuesday in Abuja.

The letter read in part, “You may wish to know that the request for the separation of the state projects from the list became imperative in view of the current economic realities in the country and the pressing needs of these states to provide infrastructural and social amenities for their citizens.

“The total loans for the states being presented for special consideration and approval is $1.49bn.”

“Ogun and Kaduna states have loan requests of $350m each for development projects; Kano, Plateau and Enugu will take $200m for water projects, while Kano will take another $200m for agricultural and water resources development.”

“Ebonyi is expected to take $70m and $80m for road projects; Abia is seeking $100m for rural development; Katsina is requesting $110m for health projects; while Jigawa has asked for $32.4m.”

Arda Turan has quit the Turkey national team after an alleged heated confrontation with a journalist.

The midfielder was travelling with the team from Macedonia and reportedly clashed with reporter Bilal Mese, grabbing him by the throat and shouting at him.

The clash was related to reports in the news claiming there was rift between senior Turkish players and the Turkey Football Federation, as they are owed bonuses for reaching the Euro 2016.

After the incident on the plane, Arda Turan took to his Instagram and slammed the media for writing lies and slandering.

“Bad things happened last night. But am I regretful? No. Now I feel at ease,” he said. “I talked with our coach and president of the federation and said that I want to leave national team. I said that I don’t want to play against Kosovo.

“I’ll always give the same response to those who put out such false news. I’ve never forgotten what it did to us.

“I speak as a man who serve the national team in all categories, loves his country and jersey. My national team career is over.”

The former Atletico Madrid star has featured 97 times for Turkey’s senior team, having made his debut against Luxembourg in August 2016.
