Southgate: Kane Will Captain England

Featured Image

Gareth Southgate has confirmed Harry Kane will captain England against Scotland in the world cup qualifiers on Saturday.

Kane already signified his interest to captain England and he’ll get that shot in his 18th cap for the senior squad.

Southgate says the Tottenham forward was selected from a few other players, as he intends to rotate the captain selection.

“People said to me there was a lack of leaders in this team and I don’t think that’s the case,” Southagte said on Friday. “I felt it important to try and give people the opportunity to lead in different ways. Everybody’s different and has different leadership styles, has a different impact around the hotel, training ground and in meetings.

“Harry is one of a number of people I could have given that opportunity to. A couple of the others have done it already and I wanted to give him that boost for tomorrow.

“It’s a great honour for any player and their family. The significance wasn’t lost on him that’s for sure.”

Sampaoli: Messi Will Continue Being The Best Until He Retires

Featured Image

Jorge Sampaoli insists Messi will continue to be the best in the world until he retires, despite an underwhelming performance against Brazil.

Mercado’s strike gave Sampaoli his win with Argentina over Brazil in Melbourne , with Brazil missing a couple of chances.

Messi could not give Albiceleste the boost they needed and Sampaoli would only praise and not criticise his captain.

“When it comes to Messi, he is and will continue to be the best player in the world until he retires,” Sampaoli said at a news conference after his first game in charge of the national team.

“That is simply the way I feel about Leo.

“Overall, I appreciate the enthusiasm and the attitude of the players. We did not have a lot of time to prepare.

“We got more chances to score than Brazil in the first half and were mainly playing inside their half. We suffered a bit after the break. Brazil got some chances to level the scoring in the second half.

“It is always a motivation to beat Brazil, this game is a classic. We did not just come here to play, but wanted to win. The players fought for the jersey.”

Osinbajo To Assent 2017 Budget As Presidency, NASS Settle Differences

Featured Image

The Presidency and leadership of the National Assembly have resolved all the grey areas that prevented the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo from assenting to the Appropriation Bill passed into law by the legislature last month.

The agreement comes after three days of stormy deliberations between the executive and legislature.

Presidency Breaks Silence On Why 2017 Budget Has Not Been Assented To

Speaking to Vanguard Newspaper, a top Presidency source on Thursday night said that the major areas of disagreement had been resolved by the two sides, paving the way for the President to assent to the bill, which is already six month late in coming and holding back major financial transactions of the government.

As a result of the deal struck by both parties, there were indications that the President would assent to the bill before the end of this week, although the presidential source simply said:  “We will sign it soon,” declining to specify the date and time.

A competent source close to the polity said that the meetings between the Presidency and the leadership of the NASS took place on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before the areas of conflict were resolved.

It is also understood that as part of the understanding between the two sides, the lawmakers would not insist on the full implementation of the “over 400 strange projects,” which the lawmakers brought into the budget and would also not accuse the executive of not complying with the full implementation of the law.

“It is true that all the contentious issues that delayed the President’s assent had been resolved. Hopefully, the president will assent to the budget soon,” the official said.

The lawmakers, it was gathered, had agreed that the money taken away from major infrastructure projects and added to other obscure projects, be returned to those projects as outlined by President Muhammadu Buhari in the budget sent to the NASS even though the president would sign the bill as transmitted to him by the NASS.

Full Breakdown Of Nigeria’s ‘2017 Budget Of Recovery And Growth’

The Presidency was not happy after it learnt about the insertion of strange projects mostly roads, health centres, recreational centres, water and electricity schemes, which are under state and local governments that were never evaluated, designed or included in the federal government.

The executive was also upset that while NASS slashed the votes for other vital projects and MDAS, it jerked its own votes from N115 billion to N125 billion even with the hard times.

Igbo Eviction Notice: Northern Elders Back Arewa Youth Group

Featured Image

The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), on Friday expressed support to the call by the Coalition of Northern Youth Groups for Igbos to leave the region within three months.

NAN reports that the group made its position known despite widespread condemnation that followed the ultimatum earlier handed by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum.

Biafra: Northern Youths Dare El-Rufai, Insist Igbo People Must Leave

The forum expressed “disappointment” with the Northern Governors’ Forum for disowning the youth groups.

Biafra: Groups Order Igbo People Out Of Northern Nigeria Within 3 Months

Ango Abdullahi, the NEF spokesperson, told journalists in Zaria on Friday that it was hypocritical for the Igbos to continue to live in other parts of the country while agitating for Nigeria’s break up.

Mr. Abdullahi said: “I am disappointed in the decision taken by Northern Governors’ Forum disowning and condemning the agitation by this young agile and progressive youth groups.

“Let me ask these Northern governors, whom are they representing, are they representing spirits, ghost or people of the north?

“Recently, people from eastern part of this country, specifically Igbo, were busy calling for the Sovereign State of Biafra and from all indication their leaders including governors are behind them.”

According to him, whoever feels Nigeria “is not conducive for him” let him quit, adding that what the northern youth groups did was not a sin.”

He lamented that none of the Northern governors reacted to the persistent call for the actualisation of Biafra and other agitations.

Police Begins Manhunt For Groups That Threatened Igbo People Out Of Northern Nigeria

Mr. Abdullahi said when Nnamdi Kanu was released on bail recently, over 100 vehicles escorted him to his residence including big personalities from the south-west and south-east.

“This is somebody who has been agitating for the breakup of Nigeria but his people were behind him, therefore, I am behind the youths.

“This is because the Northern youths are pushed to the wall, we have been calming them down in any event similar to this,” he noted.

Speaking specifically on the Igbos, Mr. Abdullahi said the people from the south were always pretending that people from the north were cheating them.

“These people always pretend that the North is cheating them, not minding the fact that Southern Nigeria was developed by resources from the North.

“Please, look for a book written by Adamu FiKa, the Waziri of FiKa on Nigeria’s budget before and after independence.

“Each year, up to the time Nigeria gained its independence, none of the two regions was able to provide for itself.

“I mean none of the Western and Eastern regions had the money to effectively run the affairs of its region until they get financial support from the Northern region,” he said.

He recalled that the tradition had remained during the colonial masters and nothing changed after they left the country.

El-Rufai Orders ‘Immediate’ Arrest Of Groups That Want Igbo People Out Of Northern Nigeria

Mr. Abdullahi said it was the same money from the North that was used to construct Nigerian Railways, refineries and other facilities.

“First oil exploration was conducted using money from groundnut pyramid, cotton, hide and skin among other cash crops from Northern Nigeria.

“However, these people tend to forget all these goodies provided by the North toward ensuring the unity and corporate existence of Nigeria.

“They always look down on us, feeling that Northerners are parasites in this country,” he said.

Murder: US Court Sentences Nigerian To Life Imprisonment

Featured Image

A Nigerian businessman was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole during hearing in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom on Monday, June 5, 2017.

It is understood that the accused, Ezeoma Chigozie Obioha, who was convicted last year of first-degree murder, sat showing no emotion, LATimes reports.

The 32-year-old was sentenced for the murder of a woman, Carrie Jean Melvin, who was fired in the face with a shotgun as she walked into a Thai restaurant in Hollywood with her boyfriend in 2015.

Her father, Bernard Melvin stood in the courtroom moments before the man convicted of his daughter’s murder was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Telling his wife and relatives that his 30-year-old daughter was dead was the “hardest thing” he has ever done, Melvin said.

“I feel as though I have lost a limb,” he said, his voice cracking. Since then, he said, he has held his wife as she cries herself to sleep, and shed tears with Carrie’s boyfriend.

“I have tried to answer my family’s questions, but how do you explain a completely senseless act? We cry every day,” said her father.

“I had to hear and see things in the trial that no parent should have to hear.”

The victim’s older brother, Ryan, said Obioha’s insistence that he is innocent compounded the family’s grief. He said he experiences recurring nightmares about his sister’s murder.

In December 2016, after the conviction, Obioha’s attorney, Jamon Hicks, told reporters that he was “disappointed obviously” with the verdict and said that he believed the defense had done a “good job of showing that there was reasonable doubt in the case.”.

“This is a (case of) he wasn’t the one and that someone else did this, someone murdered her in a terrible fashion, but they got the wrong guy … I’ll always think that they have the wrong person. Our theme was that this was a rush to judgment,” the defense lawyer said.

Prosecutors alleged that Obioha acted after Melvin spurned his romantic interest in her and then filed a complaint with state officials alleging that he owed her more than $1,000 for work she had done marketing his clothing line on social media.

The morning after the killing, a boy playing on the beach in Malibu found Obioha’s Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun under a rock.

Lying nearby was an unusual shotgun shell, identical to an expended shell found at the crime scene: a white Rio Royal Grand 12-gauge, 00 buck shell with the head stamp “globalshot.com,” prosecutors said.

Willy Sagnol Appointed As Bayern Munich Assistant Coach

Featured Image

Willy Sagnol has joined Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching staff at Bayern Munich on a two-year contract, the club have announced.

The 40-year-old former France international became a fans’ favourite at the Allianz Areana and enjoyed much success during his time as a Bayern player from 2000 to 2009, winning the Champions League in 2001.

“I’m very proud Carlo Ancelotti, one of the best and most experienced coaches in world football, has picked me,” Sagnol, 40, said after signing a two-year deal. “I’m happy to be able to work alongside him with this team.”

Willy Sagnol  will fill the gap in the dug-out left by Paul Clement’s departure for Swansea City in January and Hermann Gerland’s recent appointment as head of Bayern’s new FC Bayern Campus, the club’s freshly-opened state-of-the-art youth academy.

“I had asked the board to bring in a replacement for the coming season,” said Ancelotti, who had suggested a former Bayern player would be the ideal target, preferably one with coaching experience.

“Willy Sagnol meets both criteria. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

“Nigeria Spent N4.74trillion On Importation Of Petrol In 2016”

Featured Image

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, has said that Nigeria spent about N4.74 trillion on importation of petrol last year.

Senate Suspends Port Harcourt Refinery Concession To Agip, Oando

Kachikuwu added that it represented 30 per cent of the total foreign exchange outlay of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

”The importation of petroleum products between January and December of last year amounted to about 20 million metric tonnes”, he said, while replying the Senate on plans to refurbish Nigeria’s creaky refineries.

The minster further denied reports of the concession of Port Harcourt Refinery to Oando and Agip companies.

”A total amount of N3.4 trillion was spent, the consumption of FX from CBN was approximately 30 per cent of CBN total FX outlay, and the logistic costs of that importation was about N1.34 trillion within the same one year period.”

On domestic refining capacity, the minister said the nation produced six million litres out of a total consumption of about 35 million litres per day.

”In the midst of this sort of statistics, it was absolutely critical that we move in to try to end importation of products, improve our refineries and get them up to 100 per cent.

”We are looking for financing of the repair and upgrade of the refineries. We are not concessioning refineries, it is simply a financing package,” he said.

Kachikwu said the government would invite the original refineries builders for the three refineries to undertake the repairs but stressed that it had not selected any financier for the repairs.

”Once we identify those individuals and see how we can make contacts with those who built the refineries – Saipem in Warri; JGC in Port Harcourt; and Chiyoda in Kaduna, to ensure that we go back to them.’

He said such step was necessary ‘’because they (builders) have the designs, engineering outlay and upgrade capabilities, and in some cases, they have the access to spare part.

”If we are going to achieve this within the timeframe we gave, we are going to meet them and I think we have largely decided that those are the people we should use,” he stated.

Witness Claims Army, Police, DSS, INEC Officials, Others Collected From Diezani’s $115m Bribe

A document was on Thursday tendered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before the Federal High Court in Lagos with names of some of the individuals and public officials who collected from an alleged bribe of $115m doled out by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke, to compromise the 2015 general elections.

The Punch reports that the anti graft agency quoted the document as saying that the Resident Assistant Inspector-General of Police in Kwara State at the time received N1m cash.

The document also stated that while the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State at the time received N10m cash, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations got N2m cash.

In the same vein, both the Assistant Commissioners of Police in charge of operations and administration in Kwara State, according to the document, received N1m cash each.

The document also showed that the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kwara State for the 2015 general elections was also given a cash of N10m, while the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Administrative Secretary in Kwara State at the time received N5m cash.

The INEC Head of Department, Operations and “his boys” were given N5m, while “other officers” received and shared N2m among themselves.

Also listed as beneficiaries of the Diezani bribe in Kwara State were OC Mopol and “his men”, who got N7m; 21c Mopol and men in the state, who got N10m; the Director of the DSS and his men, who got N2.5m.

The military in Kwara State was bribed with N50m, according to the document, while other security agencies including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Federal Road Safety Corps got N20m.

During court session on Thursday, an investigator with the EFCC, Usman Zakari, who brought the document to court, told Justice Rilwan Aikawa that it was recovered from a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Dele Belgore.

Belgore is standing trial before Justice Aikawa for allegedly collecting N450m from Diezani and distributing same to beneficiaries in Kwara State.

The anti graft agency is further accusing him of handling the money in cash without going through any financial institution, an act said to be an offence under sections 1(a), 16(d), 15(2)(d) and 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012.

The EFCC said Belgore is liable to be punished under sections 15(3)(4), and 16(2)(b) of the same Act.

Also standing trial alongside Belgore for the offence is a former Minister of National Planning, Prof. Abubakar Suleiman.

The SAN and the don were arraigned on charges of money laundering on February 8, 2017 but they pleaded not guilty.

Zakari is the second witness to be called by the EFCC in its efforts to prove its case.

Speaking before Justice Aikawa on Thursday, Zakari explained that Belgore volunteered the list to the EFCC when he was invited and interrogated by the anti-graft agency.

The investigator pointed out to the court Belgore’s endorsement on the document titled, “Security and Transportation per State,” stating: “document supplied by me, Mohammed Dele Belgore (SAN).”

Equally, the EFCC exhibited another document recovered from Belgore also showing other beneficiaries.

The document simply titled “Kwara State” showed beneficiaries of a sum of N155,220,000 and the breakdown of what they got.

Among them were 15 electoral officers who each received, 250,000; 15 supervisors, who got N100,000 each; the state Returning Officer, who got N1m, among others.

The two documents were tendered by the EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, and admitted in evidence as Exhibit 7 and 7A, against Belgore and Suleiman, as their lawyers, Mr. Ebun Shofunde (SAN) and Mr. Olatunji Ayanlaja (SAN), raised no objection.

The case was adjourned till July 7.
