MKO Abiola: Lagos Declares Tomorrow, June 12 As Public Holiday

Featured Image

The Governor Akinwunmi Ambode led government of Lagos State has declared Monday as a public holiday in honour of the winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

The state governor made this declaration known on Sunday, barely hours after the executives of Oyo, Ogun and Osun States had declared the same day as a public holiday in commemoration of the 24th anniversary of the late chief.

Ambode, in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, said the state remains committed to the ideals of the annulled 1993 Presidential election.

The governor added that the holiday was in honour of the ideals which June 12, 1993 Presidential election represented, being a day that the country experienced an election that was adjudged as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history.

He said that 24 years after, the ideals of June 12  are still worth celebrating, describing the day as one of the most defining moments of the country’s political history which had positively shaped its democracy.

Governor Ambode further urged Nigerians to go beyond the commemoration and strive to entrench a viable democracy.

He said that this was a way to immortalise the late  winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, Chief M.K.O Abiola through the practice of true federalism and conduct of credible and fair elections.

“June 12, 1993 is a day we must not forget in the annals of our democratic history. Our present democratic experience may still be far from the ideal, but we must all make concerted efforts to entrench fiscal federalism which is the only way to achieve true nationhood.”

Ambode said that part of the enduring lessons of June 12 election was that it imbued the patriotic and nationalistic zeal in all Nigerians,  to speak with one voice to make a political choice,  devoid of ethnic, racial or social sentiments.

“On June 12, 1993, majority of Nigerians across all divides demonstrated through the ballot box that irrespective of class or ethnic sympathies, the Nigerian people are united and would always join hands to promote our unifying values.

” Though the peoples’ hope was dashed with the annulment of the elections by the military junta, the lessons of the elections cannot be wished away despite subterranean efforts by many to do,” Ambode said.

He described June 12 as the real Democracy Day in Nigeria.

“We owe it a duty to genuinely immortalise the fallen heroes of the June 12 struggle nationally and deepen our democratic values to ensure that never again will such anti-people action be allowed to take place,” he said

He also assured that his administration would remain committed to the ideals of June 12 by carrying out people-oriented programmes across the State and making life more comfortable for the people.

Ambode said that State Government, through the office of Civic Engagement, had perfected arrangement for the annual public symposium which would hold on Monday to celebrate June 12.

Featured Image

The Governor Ayodele Fayose led government of Ekiti State has declared Monday as a public holiday in honour of the winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

The declaration comes few days after Ogun, Ondo and Oyo states had announced the same day as a public holiday in commemoration of the 24th anniversary of the late chief.

Osun Declares Monday, June 12 As Public Holiday

In a statement issued on Sunday in Ado Ekiti, Fayose – a member of the Peoples Democratic Party – said he took the decision to join his other colleagues in the South West in the spirit of the unity of the region.

He said, “Yoruba nation’s interest is beyond personal interest of anyone. For us to forge ahead as a people, we must speak with one voice.

“In the light of this, I declare Monday a public holiday to further strengthen our collective belief, hope and aspirations. This, I have done in the spirit of Yoruba nation and South West integration.”

The late Bashorun Moshood Abiola won the election. However, his victory was annulled by the then military Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd.).

Abiola was later incarcerated by the military junta of the late General Sanni Abacha.

The day is celebrated in recognition and honour of the martyrdom of Abiola, who died in a mysterious circumstance while in incarceration a few days after the death of Abacha.

Jefferson: If Cavs Don’t Win Championship It Will Be An Unsuccessful Season

Featured Image

Defending champions Cleveland Cavaliers could lose the finals to Golden State Warriors, but Richard Jefferson can’t have that happening.

Jefferson said cavaliers had one goal going into the season and that is winning the championship and failing to win it, will make their season unsuccessful.

“I still do not feel like we’ve reached our potential,” Jefferson said Friday, after the team’s shootaround at their practice facility. “We’ve said it all along — it doesn’t matter if we lose in Game 7, what happens with tonight: If we don’t win a championship, then the season was unsuccessful. That’s it. It’s the same for them.

“It’s probably the same for three teams in this league every single year. And it’s true. If we don’t win a championship, it’s unsuccessful. Nobody would be surprised at the end of the day if before this series you said the Cavs won. No one would be surprised if someone said San Antonio won a championship at the beginning of the season. No one would be, like, mind blown.

“So for the three, four teams that are in that position, regardless of how it ends or whatever, if you don’t raise that banner the next year, then it was unsuccessful.”

Jefferson was asked if the Cavaliers are motivated to avoid being swept so that they can stop the Warriors from posting a perfect 16-0 postseason mark.

“No, our goal is not to try and stop the team that broke Michael Jordan’s regular-season record [last season],” he said. “We’re not trying to stop a team from going undefeated in [the playoffs]. None of those things matter. None of those things matter.

“Our only goal is — it’s about us and it’s about trying to be in the best form that we can be and trying to win a championship for ourselves. If your motivation is other people, then you’re probably doing this for the wrong reasons.”

Gundogan: Sane Is Sure To Improve

Featured Image

Ilkay Gundogan has hailed Leroy Sane’s first season at Manchester City, but expects him to improve next season.

Sane joined City in the 2016-17 season and struggled in the beginning, before getting his first goal in December.

Gundogan expected his compatriot to have a difficult first season, but is certain of a better second season.

“I expected [the difficult start] to be honest,” Gundogan told City’s official website. “[Sane] is still so young. I knew before that the first few months are the hardest and you just need to keep going.

“It doesn’t matter if you are directly in the team or if you need some time to adapt. When you are young, you just have to keep going, never lose your motivation in yourself and that is exactly what he did.

“He had a few difficult months, but that’s very normal for a young guy like him. Especially to join a new country, a new language at 20 years old.

Gundogan added: “When I was 20, I was in Germany. I was around my family, I had everything. I was in my comfort zone.

“He just went out of it, took the decision for himself for a whole new adventure.

“When you are so young, it’s really difficult and the way he played in the second period of the season is just incredible. I am still quite sure there is more potential in him and he can be better next season.

“I think that is his aim and that should just motivate us to help him keep going. Hopefully, he can create a lot more goals for us – whether he assists or scores on his own.

“We are quite happy to have him, especially me because he is my neighbour now. It’s nice to have him and nice to spend time with him away from the field.”

Sigurdsson: Iceland Fans Believes It Is Possible For Us To Beat Anyone

Ragnar Sigurdsson says the Iceland fans believe in them so much, they are sure they can beat anyone.

Iceland were exceptional in the Euro 2016 cup and will be relying on their fans support in the must win encounter against Croatia.

Iceland made it to the quarterfinals of the Euro Cup and need to beat Croatia in the world cup qualifiers.

“You wouldn’t believe the belief people have in us, it’s amazing. Even if we’re playing against Croatia, at home or away, everyone thinks we’re going to win the game,” he told Goal in an exclusive interview.

“Even if we met England again, people would think we have a good chance of winning, that’s helped us, the belief we have in ourselves.

“The belief Icelandic people have in us is really such a motivation for us.”

Marquinhos Calls Cavani, A Goalscoring Genius

Featured Image

Paris Saint Germain defender, Marquinhos is quite pleased with the form Edison Cavani showed in the 2016-17 season.

Cavani played out wide when Ibrahimovic was in France, but has been moved to his favoured central role since his exit. And he didn’t disappoint.

The Uruguay international was brilliant in front of goal and scored 49 goals in 50 appearances for PSG.

“Edi was already one of our strongest players, but the number of goals he has scored this season is just unbelievable,” Marquinhos told the club’s official website.

“He works hard for the team, is always very positive and gives everything for his team-mates, which is very important.

“He has scored some fantastic goals like the one against Bordeaux that was like [Rabah] Madjer or the lob versus Nancy.

“And there is his own special, where he gets to the near post for a finish.

“He is a genius as a goalscorer.”

Robson: United Need To Sign Players With Flair

Featured Image

Bryan Robson has urged Mourinho to strengthen his attack by signing a few flair players.

United are a team that is difficult to score against and they’ve further bolstered their defence with the signing of Lindelof.

However, in attack is where Robson wants to see change, as United struggled to score enough goals last season.

“It certainly was a great ending in Stockholm,” Robson told ManUtd.com. “It finished off an okay season and made it into a very good season.

“To win the Community Shield, EFL Cup and then the Europa League, to go into the Champions League, has set everyone up great for next season.

“When you look at the way Jose has turned the club around, I know we won the FA Cup the year before, but he came in and brought in four new players who I think improved the team and improved the squad.

“So that went very well and then we got into a way of playing. Okay, we drew a lot of games at home but we weren’t getting beaten.

“We are a difficult team to beat now and what you can do, if you set your stall out that way to be difficult to beat, is to then add a few flair players to that squad.

“All of a sudden, you’re winning a lot more games than you’re drawing. So I can see us up there challenging for the title next season.”

First Season At City, A Disappointment For Stones

Featured Image

England defender, John Stones has admitted his first season at Manchester City was a disappointment.

The former Everton man joined City for £47.5 million, but he has failed to live up to expectations.

Manchester City finished in the top four, but didn’t win any trophy under Guardiola and Stones believes they can do better.

“I was disappointed with my first season at City, purely because we had such a great team and we set the bar high,” the centre-back told Mirror Sport.

“We all believed we could do better – and I know that I could have done better in some games. But I have a thick skin and I do not worry about criticism from the outside too much. Ultimately, I only listen to the manager, my team-mates and my family.

“The fee does not really make it harder for me. I am very fortunate to have been bought for that amount of money – almost flattered by City paying that much. And, of course, I want to do myself justice.”

The 23-year-old made 41 appearances in all competitions in 2016-17, scoring two goals in the process.

Cristiano Ronaldo Welcomes The Birth Of Twins With Surrogate Mother

Featured Image

Cristiano Ronaldo has become the father of surrogate twins, according to a report.

Portuguese TV station SIC claims that the children, named Eva and Mateo, were born on Thursday – a day before the Portugal international netted twice in the 3-0 win over Latvia.

British national The Sun reported in March that Ronaldo, already the father of six-year-old Cristiano Jr, was to become a father of twins to a surrogate based in the United States.

No official confirmation has yet been given but the Portuguese is said to have become a dad for the second and third time earlier this week.

Ronaldo, the scorer of 53 goals in 51 games for club and country this season, is currently dating Spanish model Georgina Rodriguez.

Cristiano’s family has always refused to discuss whether his son was born to a surrogate mother, despite claims by a former nanny that the footballer’s sister Katia had told her he had two Mexican mums.

Carer Maria Manuela Rodriguez, who worked at Katia’s house in Moita near Lisbon for 10 months, told leading Portuguese tabloid Correio da Manha in August 2011: ‘Once I saw a newspaper article saying the child’s mother wanted him back.’

Katia said: ‘That’s a lie, because the mum is Mexican and she didn’t even see if it was a boy or a girl, because she was a surrogate mum” adding that she told her Cristianinho was the “child of two mums.”‘

‘She even told me the child had two mums, that the eggs were from one and another carried and gave birth to the child. And that both were Mexican.

‘The child was born in a private clinic and the mother didn’t even see him, because she was covered up. The baby was born and she doesn’t know anything about him.’

The Real Madrid striker took legal action over the article, claiming the newspaper had intruded into his private life.

A court in Lisbon ruled in favour of the footballer and fined a newspaper exec, the former nanny and the two journalists who wrote the story.

An appeal against the decision is understood to be ongoing.

Steven Gerrard Backs Wayne Rooney To Make England’s World Cup Squad

Featured Image

Steven Gerrard has claimed that Wayne Rooney still has an important role to play for the national team should they reach the 2018 World Cup.

Wayne Rooney was overlooked by manager Gareth Southgate for his latest squad, seeing him miss the thrilling 2-2 qualifying draw with Scotland on Saturday evening.

England remain in a strong position to reach Russia, despite dropping points at Hampden Park, and Gerrard expects 119-cap Rooney to be a part of the squad due to his experience of playing at major tournaments.

“People are very quick to jump on getting older lads out of the England squad, but when it comes to tournaments it’s important you have a good blend of youth and experience,” he told BT Sport.

“Wayne brings that [experience] and he has scored a heavy amount of goals at international level and that’s very difficult to replace. Of course it’s been a difficult season for him but he’s more than capable of getting a good pre-season under his belt and coming back very strong and forcing his way back in – I have no doubt about that.”

Gabriel Jesus Suffers Broken Eye Socket After Nicolas Otamendi Clash

Featured Image
Gabriel Jesus has been ruled out of Brazil‘s squad to face Australia next Tuesday after fracturing the orbital bone around his left eye in the defeat to Argentina.

The 20-year-old was injured in an aerial collision with clubmate Nicolas Otamendi at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, leaving him in need of medical treatment on the field.

Jesus had been left feeling groggy and will now play no part against Australia in Melbourne, though Brazil have opted against calling up a replacement.

The Brazilian Football Confederation provided an update on Saturday evening to confirm the injury, while Jesus took to Twitter to tell supporters that he “is fine”.

Brazil’s team coordinator and former Arsenal midfielder Edu Gaspar had previously claimed that Jesus had been given the all-clear.

‘Jesus is fine,’ Edu announced. ‘I spoke to the doctor, he said he is OK. He already did the exam to see if it (his jaw) is broken or not but nothing has happened.’

Edu also clarified coach Tite’s comments that Jesus had very briefly fallen unconscious, saying he had just felt very dizzy from the blow.

Jesus was a constant threat before 95,569 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but missed Brazil’s best chance to clinch an equaliser, striking the post in front of an open goal.

The striker is not believed to be in Chelsea boss Antonio Conte’s plans for next season, opening the possibility of a summer departure. One stumbling block that may prevent a return to Atletico, however, is the Spanish side’s transfer ban. Costa fears that not being able to play until January would thwart his ambitions of representing his country at the 2018 World Cup. (AS)

Manchester City target Leonardo Bonucci is now being tracked by Chelsea. The classy centre-back, who has worked with Blues manager Conte before at club and international level, could be the subject of a €55million bid, which is €15million short of Juventus’ valuation. The player will only leave if his club accept a bid. (Calciomercato)

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be set for a return to AC Milan when his contract with Manchester United comes to an end. The Swedish icon previously starred for the Italian giants between 2010 and 2012, scoring over 50 goals in all competitions. (Tuttosport)

Juventus are looking to refresh their squad following their deeply disappointing 4-1 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, and Sevilla’s Steven N’Zonzi has emerged as a transfer target. The French defensive midfielder impressed last season but the Spanish side are reportedly reluctant so see him go. (Calciomercato)

If the Italian champions are unable to sign N’Zonzi, they may look to another option in Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta. The Spanish midfielder has just one year left on his contract, but he may find it difficult to leave the club he has spent his entire career with. (Corriere dello Sport)

Germany

PSG’s new sporting director Antero Henrique is having second thoughts about a move for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The €70million fee demanded by the German outfit is believed to be the reason for the change in stance. (Bild)

Bayern Munich believe they have found their successor to the retiring Xabi Alonso in Lyon’s Corentin Tolisso. The reigning German champions are already in negotiations with the French club regarding a move for the player, who is keen to continue his development abroad. (Sport Bild)

Bafana Bafana national team coach, Stuart Baxter, says beating Nigeria in an African Nations qualifier is very interesting.

Baxter made the assertion at Uyo on Saturday after his team beat the Super Eagles 2-0 at the Godswill Akpabio stadium.

The South African coach said “We opened up the game in the first half but unfortunately we did not score. Beating Nigeria is very interesting.“Nigeria is a very good side but my boys prevented them from scoring. We are trying to develop our boys and expose them,’’ he said.

South African striker, Tokelo Rantie  scored in the 56th minute while Percy Tau who replaced Rantie, scored the second goal for his side in the 83rd minute.

Saturday’s defeat by South Africa was the first loss of Gernot Rohr as Super Eagles Head coach.

Rohr said after the match that his boys played well in the first half but were overpowered by the experience of the South Africans in the second half.

According to him, We had difficulties in finishing the match because we made so many efforts in the first half while some of our players were tired in the second half.

“We tried to open the wings and bring power to the team but unfortunately it did not yield fruits.

“I have trust in these boys because they played well in the first half but they could not score. We win and lose together.

“I think the next game with Cameroon will be very interesting. It will be better, much, much better,” he said.
