JUST IN: Nigeria’s Acting President Osinbajo Finally Signs 2017 Budget

Featured Image

The acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, has finally signed the 2017 Appropriation Bill into law.

The acting president signed the budget – N7.44 trillion – at about 4:40 p.m. on Monday inside his conference room in the presence of the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari; Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, Ministers and other top government officials.

Osinbajo, while describing the budget signing as a milestone in the implementation of the economic and growth plan programme put in place by Mr. Buhari in April, also noted that it had fewer errors than that of last year.

“There were far few cases of acrimony unlike in the past. There is no doubt at all that our democracy is maturing very well,” he said.

Earlier today, the Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, had confirmed that his principal had asked Osinbajo to assent to the budget.

Shehu, in a statement in Abuja, said that the president conveyed his position to Prof. Osinbajo in a letter dated June 10, 2017, which he personally signed.

The statement reads, “Following the receipt of a full brief on the 2017 Appropriation Bill as passed by the National Assembly, and to buttress the unity at the highest level of government, President Muhammadu Buhari has indicated that it is in the interest of the nation’s economy for the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, to sign the Appropriation Bill into law.

“In a letter dated June 10, 2017, which he personally signed and addressed to the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, the President also said he was ‘pleased by the joint resolution that the Executive would submit next year’s budget proposals by October 2017 and the National Assembly will conclude the Appropriation process by December 2017, so that the country can return to a normal fiscal period from next year onwards.’”

June 12 1993 And The Lessons Of History By Joe Igbokwe

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Those who were not born before June 12, 1993, may not know what is all about. For record purposes, June 12, 1993, was the day Nigerians from the East, West, North and rose voice, in amity, in unity, in concord and tandem to elect Chief M.K.O as the president of Nigeria.

This article was written by Joe Igbokwe. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

But on 21st June 1993 the former military president, retired General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the historic election and set Nigeria on the path of crisis, leading to many deaths including the winner and the wife , Kudrirat Abiola.

In my book, Heroes of Democracy (1999) the struggle for the revalidation of that mandate and the consequences was documented for posterity and generations yet unborn. Today I want to talk about the historical importance of that election, the pains, the sacrifices, the losses and the lessons.

Recall that the consummate winner of that historic election, a Yoruba first class leader, a Chartered Accountant of note, an international scholar, and a very successful businessman was hounded and incarcerated for five years and was eventually poisoned on July 7, 1998. The wife, Kudirat Abiola was shot in Lagos on June 4, 1996. It was a calculated attempt and carefully planned work to provoke the Yoruba to war in order to destroy the economy Lagos but did Yorubas play into their hands? NO!  A lot of high profile Yoruba leaders including the late Chief Abraham Adesanya, the late Chief Bola Ige, Ayo Adebanjo, late Olaniwun Ajayi, Ayo Opadokun and others were incarcerated, some like Suliat Adedeji, Admiral Omotosho , Admiral Elegbede, Toyin Onagoruwa etc were killed. Former president OBASANJO was sent to jail for an alleged phantom coup.

Great minds like Professor Wole Soyinka, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kayode Fayemi and many others were chased into exile .Yoruba leaders were abused, humiliated and ridiculed but did they resort to self-determination, abuse, hatred and ethnic bigotry? No! with pen and paper, and with common sense, sound education and civilization they faced those who planned to decimate them. No wonder the presidency was zoned to them in 1999 even though they did not allow them to use their choice, Chief Olu Falae. The powers that be chose Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. That singular mistake almost made Nigeria to lose almost everything in 16 years of PDP. Obasanjo was not prepared for leadership. He just came out from prison with no agenda, no plans, no strategy.

Then came the late Umaru Yar Adua who died in office and then Jonathan and in those 16 years Nigeria, many including this writer still talk about it as the years of the locusts. Now the questions people like us have been asking is whether Nigeria would have been where it is today had Chief Abiola been allowed to rule Nigeria at least for 8 years?  Abiola would have brought to bear his cognate and very deep experience in the business world to transform Nigeria. Chief Abiola would have set the template for a prosperous Nigeria, he would have brought the hope he promised Nigerians, he would utilized our oil revenue to transform Nigeria as a Chartered Accountant and he would have changed for the better Nigeria’s course of history.

Denying Chief Abiola his mandate caused Nigeria a great and monumental setback in 18 years .Today 24 years after, the annulment of that mandate is still haunting Nigeria.

What happened from June 12, 1993, to July 7, 1998, provoked the Yoruba nation to hate other Nigerians especially the Hausa- Fulani and Igbo for decimating a free mandate given to their illustrious son and killing him thereafter. But did the Yoruba go to war? Today southwest is the richest zone in Nigeria. In fact, the IGR of Ogun state is bigger than that of the entire South East States. Lagos IGR is bigger than that of 33 states in Nigeria put together. If Yoruba had gone to war where would they have been today? What would have happened if Igbo or Hausa-Fulani had suffered what Yoruba went through? I have no doubt in my mind that they would have gone to war but see what tact, common sense, education, intelligence, civilization and power of critical thinking can do in the life of a wise people. The same Yoruba was later to form an alliance with Hausa – Fulani in 2014 to box Igbo and their collaborators in the South South to a corner in 2015 general elections.

Now, what are the lessons? There are no permanent foes or friends in politics. If you can wait and not tired of waiting the world and everything in it belong to you. Chief Abiola would have given up his mandate and still be alive but he chose the path of human dignity to liberate his people. Chief Abiola’s supreme sacrifice gave rise to May 29 we now celebrate as Democracy Day. I do not know any Nigerian multi-billionaire today who will do what Chief Abiola did yet other people think Yorubas are cowards. Perish the thought. They are the toughest and most advanced Nigerians I know today.

Today, is South West not better than those who seek to humiliate and destroy them? Those who seek to destroy and decimate others suffer more than their victims.  June 12 lives on. Chief M.K.O Abiola lives on.

Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham Undecided About His Future

Featured Image

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham says he is undecided on his future, according to the Daily Mail.

The youngster is weighing up loan offers from Newcastle and Brighton as he looks to continue his development.

Abraham said: “I’m not sure what I’m doing next season, if I’m coming back, going elsewhere on loan or staying at Chelsea.

“I haven’t decided yet. You have to stay open and things may come at different times but I have to dream big and that’s what I’m going to be doing.”

Abraham spent last season on loan at Bristol City in the Sky Bet Championship but is ready to step things up in the Premier League.

He has been assured of regular first team action at St James’ Park.

Reflecting on last season he said: “When I first came to Bristol, knowing it was Championship football, playing against experienced men, I knew it would be tough.

You’d be hard pressed to find players as tall as me at academy level but that all changed when I came here.

“I had to adapt some parts of my game.

Emmanuel Adebayor: Moving To Crystal Palace Was My Worst Career Decision

Featured Image

Emmanuel Adebayor has said his move to Crystal Palace in 2016 was the “worst decision” of his career.

The 33-year-old former Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur forward joined Palace on a six-moth loan spell in January last year and was released at the end of that season after scoring just once in 15 appearances.

“I had some great experiences in England in clubs who are among the best in the country,” Adebayor, who currently plays for Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir, told British media.

“The only error that I made was to sign for Crystal Palace in January 2016.

“I did it just to please my entourage, who were saying to me: ‘Manu, you have to start playing again!’ It was the worst decision of my career.”

After leaving Palace last summer he was a free agent until January this year when he signed for Turkish Super Lig club İstanbul Başakşehir.

Emmanuel Adebayor scored six goals in 11 league games as his new side finished second and reached the domestic cup final.

‘I spent this time out of the game calmly,’ he added.

‘I was never worried. Because I was never left with nothing to do. I spent several months in Togo to train.

‘I have a sports room in my house in Lome, and what is practical in Togo is that you can train outside all year. I worked on speed, endurance, My sister looked after me, she made me healthy meals.’

West Ham Might Take Joe Hart On Loan With Wages Stopping Permanent Deal

Featured Image

Manchester City will let England goalkeeper Joe Hart go on loan toWest Ham if a permanent deal away from the Etihad Stadium cannot be agreed.

360Nobs understands West Ham are keeping tabs on Hart’s situation, but his present wage deal means they would only consider a loan move.

Joe Hart spent the 2016/17 season away from City on loan, having signed for Serie A side Torino during last summer’s transfer window.

Both the player and his club expect more potential suitors to become apparent following the international break but, after England’s 2-2 draw in Glasgow, Hart admitted he was yet to receive any offers for the next campaign.

“I would love to give you a poker-straight answer, but I’ve got nothing at the moment because I think people are focused on international duty and respecting that players are focusing on international duty,” Hart said

“Come Tuesday night, I don’t know how everyone else finishes, after that is when conversations can be had and people can start being real.

“I need an offer first and then I need to work out my options if I have choices. I want to be playing at the highest possible level, pushing myself.

“It’s a short career. I want to push everything out of me. Physically I feel in great condition and I want to go again.”

Garry Monk: Middlesbrough Is Everything I Wanted

Featured Image

Garry Monk has revealed Boro offered him everything Leeds didn’t, and the ambition at the club down from owner Steve Gibson was the most attractive aspect to him.

Garry Monk was confirmed as the new Boro boss last Friday on a three-year contract, after chairman Steve Gibson held formal interviews with both him and former Leicester boss Nigel Pearson.

Garry Monk admits the pressure is on to bounce Boro back into the Premier League – as he revealed why he quit Leeds .

The new Middlesbrough manager walked out of Elland Road last month after just missing out on the play offs.

He took the title “manager” rather than head coach at Boro and has been tasked with “smashing” the Championship by chairman Steve Gibson.

Monk left Leeds without triggering a contract extension and said: “New people came in and there was a new structure.

“I talked to the new ownership about what the new process would be and I thought it would carry on but for whatever reason it didn’t work out.

“I don’t really want to go into the detail of that right now but it didn’t suit me and so I had to take a decision.

“Leeds are a great club, I loved it. There are a lot of good people there and the fans are fantastic and I wish them all well.

“I hope they get into the Premier League – but that is behind me now. That’s football, things move on.

“I’m at Middlesbrough now and that is my only concern and focus.”

Crystal Palace Midfielder Joe Ledley ‘Not Sure’ Where He Will Play Next

Featured Image

Wales midfielder Joe Ledley could be tempted by a move abroad as he weighs up his career options this summer.

Ledley made nearly 100 appearances for Crystal Palace after joining from Celtic in January 2014. But he was frozen out by then-Eagles boss Sam Allardyce during the second half of the 2016-17 Season and released by the Premier League club last week.

“It’s been frustrating,” Ledley said after helping Wales to a 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw in Serbia on Sunday night.

“I don’t know why I’ve not been even in the squads, but it was the decision of the manager and I had to deal with it and get on with it.

“Things move on, I’ve left and hopefully I can get a new team now.”

“Clubs have been in contact with my agent. Nothing is confirmed, we will just wait and see,” he told BBC Wales.

“I am going to have a great summer with my family and my children and then see the options which I have.

“I am not sure (what will happen), we’ll have to wait and see what happens, see what is in front of me and make the decision from there.”

Osinbajo Gets Buhari’s Approval To Sign 2017 Budget

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari has given the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, the green light to sign the 2017 budget.

The President, in a letter addressed to Budget Minister, Udoma Udo Udoma, said it is in the interest of the nation’s economy for the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, to sign the 2017 Appropriation Bill into law.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on the Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, confirmed that his principal wrote the letter to Senator Udoma Udo Udoma.

Buhari, who is recuperating in London, said he had received a full briefing on the Appropriation Bill as passed by the National Assembly.

To buttress the unity at the highest level of government, he said he was yielding his signatory authority to Osinbajo.

An earlier report had indicated that Osinbajo will sign the 2017 budget into law by 3pm today.

The announcement was made by the Special Adviser to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki on New Media, Bamikole Omisore, on his social media handle @MrBanksOmisore.

Saraki, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara would join Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa for the signing of the budget, Omisore said.

“Today at 3:00pm Senate President @bukolasaraki will join AG @ProfOsinbajo for the signing of 2017budget at Presidential Villa in @AsoRock,” he wrote on his twitter handle.

The  National Assembly, NASS, had passed the budget on 11 May. Osinbajo was presented a copy by 19 May with the original figure ballooning to N7.441 trillion, from the N7.28trillion proposed by President Buhari.

NBA Plans To Sue Zenith Bank, Police Over Abandonment Of Brave Imo Bank Robbery Victim’s Family

Featured Image

The Owerri branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) revealed on Monday that the association plans to sue the Nigeria Police Force as well as Zenith Bank for allegedly abandoning the family of heroic Police Sergeant, Chukwudi Iboko, who died during the February 22, 2017, robbery which took place at the Wetheral Road branch of Zenith bank in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

The late Sergeant Iboko, who killed one of the four armed robbers in the attack, suffered severe gunshot injuries and died the next day in a police clinic in Owerri after allegedly being rejected at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

After video from the unfortunate robbery went viral, the sergeant has been praised by many Nigerians, leading to a massive fund raising campaign by some social media activists for his family’s upkeep and also to keep his children in school. After the wife of the victim claimed that both the Police and the Bank had abandoned her and her seven surviving children, the NBA Chairman of the Owerri Branch of the association, Lawrence Nwakaeti, said that it was a wicked act for the police and the Bank to have abandoned and neglected Iboko’s family.

He added that his branch would have no option than to sue the police and bank to compel them to take full responsibility of the family of an officer who died in active service while protecting the assets and customers of the Zenith Bank on the day of the incident.

“It is the height of wickedness for the gallant policeman who died in the course of duty to be abandoned by the police which he served most meritoriously and gave his life as a result and the bank for whom he paid the Supreme price, to abandon the young family he left behind. We demand that both the Nigeria Police Force as well as Zenith should take urgent steps towards the upkeep of the family left behind by the deceased police officer” Nwakaeti said.

The Chairman said that the widow and children of the hero police officer must be assisted by the police and the bank.

“The children he left behind who have dropped out of school must be assisted to return back to school. Their dreams must not be allowed to die just like that. It’s unfair. What message are we sending to our men and women in uniform who daily put their lives on the line so that others may be safe?

“We owe those they leave behind a duty of care in the event of the unthinkable happening to them”

According to him, “We hereby demand that the family of this fallen officer be made to feel less the death of their breadwinner”.

Nwakaeti said that In the event that nothing happens in spite of the demand, the Association shall take up the issue and ensure that Justice comes the way of the grieving family.

24 Suspected Boko Haram Members Arrested In Edo State

Featured Image

At least 24 suspected Boko Haram members were arrested by the Nigerian Army in Auchi community, Edo State, Aliru Momoh, the Otaru of Auchi Kingdom, said on Monday.

The monarch made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in his palace at Auchi, headquarters of the Estako-West local government area of the state.

He said the commandant of the Nigeria Army School of Engineering, near Auchi, informed him of the arrest of the suspected insurgents in his palace.

“Shortly before you came, I had audience with the commandant.

“He informed me about what they are doing and the arrest of some 24 suspected members of Boko Haram operating under the guise of Fulani herdsmen in the community,’’ he said.

He added: “the commandant also informed me that the suspects would be transferred to Benin’’.

Otaru further lauded the commandant for taking proactive steps to have taken the fight to the suspected insurgents in the forest, saying that the “issue of security needs careful planning and execution’’.

The monarch, who described the activities of the herdsmen in the area as worrisome, said “we have asked farmers, especially the women, to stop going to the farms for now.

“We gave them some grants to enable them to engage in petty trading in the mean time, to avoid the incessant attacks on them.

“The traditional council is collaborating with the army, security agencies, and some vigilance groups, and we have recently incorporated the hunters to help to evolve lasting solutions to the problem,’’ he added.

‘Negotiations With Labour For New Minimum Wage To Commence This Month’ – Chris Ngige

Featured Image

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has stated that negotiations concerning the increase of the set national minimum wage will begin this month when the 29-member tripartite committee begins operation.

The Minister disclosed this while speaking with reporters at the ongoing 106th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland.

However, he added that employers have stated that paying the stipulated N56,000 minimum wage demanded by Labour might be a problem, all involved parties had agreed that the N18,000 minimum wage was no longer realistic.

The minister said “The issue of minimum wage is a tripartite thing involving the employers, workers and the government and the three of us are talking and have agreed that there is the need to review the issue of minimum wage in Nigeria. The government also agreed that there is the need to pay for short fall of salary arrears, promotion arrears and other earned allowances and they can also attest to that. That is why they have not reported us here of subjugation because we have taken bold steps and initiated payment in that same direction.”

“Before I left home, N10 billion was already being processed for the promotion allowances arrears. Also, the sum of N14.6 billion had been expended in the area of salaries. If we go back home, we have other machineries and plans to go into the bond market and get some funds to offset all these arrears in one full swipe.”

When asked about when the new minimum wage issue will be resolved, he said “You cannot fix a time limit for the new minimum wage because it is a negotiation that is ongoing. But we are sure and we have seen the reason there must be an increase. Some people have taken their position. The workers have demanded N56,000 and the employers have said we cannot pay N56,000. But everything being said now is outside the orbit of the negotiation table. When the committee comes into force, then actual discussion will start and that committee will come into force in this month.”

Meanwhile, the President of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, noted that while organized labour were worried about the delay in the commencement of negotiation, they have gotten commitment from all levels, including the National Assembly that they are ready to make sure that the issue is addressed once and for all.

Presidency Denies Waiting For Buhari As Deadline For Assent Of 2017 Budget Draws Near

Featured Image

The presidency has denied any report that claimed the 2017 budget has not been assented to because it was subtly waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari to return from his trip to the United Kingdom.

According to the presidency, the rumours were spurious since Buhari transmitted full presidential powers to the acting President Yemi Osinbajo on May 7 before leaving the country.

The social media community was awash with speculations that the delay in signing the budget since its transmission by the National Assembly on May 19 was a deliberate ploy to ensure that Osinbajo does not assent to the Appropriation Bill.

The delay also raised more fears owing to the 30-day constitutional requirement for the assent of a bill after its transmission by the National Assembly to the executive and the duration expires on June 18.

However, in reaction to the speculations, a source in the presidency confided in Thisday on Sunday that “holding the nation down by delaying assent to the budget would be at variance with the president’s intention”.

The source further stated that Buhari does not want the nation to be held to ransom in anyway and hence his decision to transfer powers without reservation to Osinbajo.

The top source who pleaded anonymity also expressed confidence that the budget “would be signed soon”.

In the same vein, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has said that the 2017 budget will be signed into law this week.

Speaking on Friday, on the floor of the House, Dogara also expressed delight that the House has kept to its promise to carry out a Budget reform that will ensure that the 2017 Appropriations Bill is processed in a transparent manner.

The speaker said: “On issue of Budget, we kept our promise to Nigerians at the beginning of the legislative session to ensure transparent deliberation and passage of the 2017 Appropriations Bill which will be signed into law early next week”.

Igbo Quit Notice: O’odua Coalition Calls On Yorubas To Prepare For Sovereign Nation

Featured Image

In the wake of the lingering agitation for the breakup of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a Pan Yoruba group, O’odua Nationalist Coalition (ONAC) has called on Yoruba people to prepare for their own sovereign nation, “Oodua” Republic.

The call comes barely a week after a Coalition of Northern Youth Groups threatened the people of Ndigbo to leave the North within three months.

It further described the threat by the northern groups as “pain and misery on the Yoruba people due to distort of the development plan of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo for the South West”.

A statement on behalf of the coalition signed by Micheal Popoola, Oluwole Suleiman and Mrs Aduke Fadahunsi, on Sunday, called on Yoruba people in the territories of the Hausa-Fulani North to be guided by a strong sense of history and the fact that they will not be spared by those who claim to be their hosts.

The statement further emphasized on the need for the creation of Yoruba sovereign nation, Oduduwa Republic.

ONAC consists of 18 Pan Yoruba groups including the Oodua Peoples Congress, (OPC), Oodua Liberation Movement, (OLM), Oodua Republic Coalition, (ORC), Yoruba Revolutionary Congress, (YORC), Oodua Muslim-Christian Dialogue Group, (OMDG), Yoruba Students Nationalist Front, (YOSNF), Oodua Hunters Union, (OHUN) and 11 other groups.

The statement read: “Today, we make the historic declaration that Yoruba people are ready for our own Oduduwa Republic. We have watched events these past days. The cloud is getting thicker.

“The poisonous rain appear ready to fall. It is time for the Yoruba people to be ready to defend our homeland from being seized by local imperial elements and their collaborators.

Igbo Quit Notice: O’odua Coalition Calls On Yorubas To Prepare For Sovereign Nation

“We assert Yoruba self-determination and sovereignty. We shall work for it. We will actualize it.”

Naira Records Further Gain Against Dollar, Trades At N365/$

Featured Image

The naira has recorded further gain against the United States dollar on the parallel market, closing at N365/$.

The local currency closed at 367/dollar on Friday, after closing between 367/dollar and 368/dollar for most days of last week.

This is even as the Nigerian currency had closed at 371/dollar the previous week, after rising to 374/dollar from 382/dollar.

Reuters reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been intervening on the official market to try to narrow the spread between the official interbank and black markets.

It is also understood that the country’s apex bank has sold over $4bn since February, improving dollar supply and providing support for the naira.

Also lending voice on the development, the Acting Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, said there were plans by the apex bank to make necessary interventions in the forex market this week, in line with its earlier resolve to achieve forex rates convergence and liquidity in the market.

Currency experts and analysts have said they expect the naira to be stable across the board in the near term on increased dollar supply to both the official interbank window and the black market.

Also, the recent gains recorded by the local unit have brought the CBN closer to its plan to achieve rate convergence.

However, economic experts have said that whichever way the regulator wants to achieve this convergence – either around the lower band of N305/dollar, mid-point band of N320/dollar or around the upper band of around N360/dollar – the country has a huge price to pay.

They further argued that achieving convergence around the official rate of N305/dollar will take a long time as the CBN does not currently possess the stock of forex to push the parallel market rate from the current N380/dollar to the official rate level of N305/dollar.

Senate To Meet CBN, DMBs, NDIC, MAN Others On Tuesday Over High Interest Rates

Featured Image

The Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions will be meeting with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) and Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) on Tuesday over the high interest rates being charged by financial institutions in the country.

Also invited for the meeting with the senate panel is the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) among several other bodies based on a motion by the Chairman of the committee, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim.

Senate To Summon CBN, DMBs Over High Interest Rates

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had last week criticised the charging of high interest rates on loans by Small and Medium-scale Enterprises in the country, a situation he said had forced some firms to close shops.

The senate president had also hinted that the Senate would meet with the CBN, the DMBs and other financial institutions on the matter, with a view to bringing down the lending rate.

On Sunday night, Ibrahim told The Punch that stakeholders in the financial and manufacturing sectors had been called to the meeting.

He said, “We are going to meet with them on Tuesday. We have invited the Central Bank of Nigeria, all Deposit Money Banks as well as development finance banks, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, the Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises and the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.

“Although the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry is under NACCIMA, we have invited them separately because of the peculiarity of Lagos.”

Ibrahim added that the National Economic Summit Group was also invited.

“We also invited some industry experts to give us their opinions,” he added.

The meeting is expected to find “immediate, sustainable and lasting solutions that will help usher in a new interest rate regime that supports enterprise development in Nigeria.”

Insecurity: Wike Says Rivers Safer Than Lagos, Kano, Kogi, Others For Doing Business

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers has branded Lagos, Kogi, Kaduna, Benue and Kano criminal states, but added that Rivers is safe when it comes to doing business.

Wike made this known yesterday at a dinner to mark the 20th Anniversary of Air France’s first flight to Port Harcourt International Airport.

According to him, the kidnappers and murderers “in those states” terrorize residents on daily basis.

“Investors are coming to Rivers regularly and they are talking about insecurity.

“ Look at what is happening in Lagos, Kogi, Kaduna and Kano and you will realize that this state is the safest,” he said.

He explained that the state was becoming safer for investors on a daily basis due to the state government’s investment on security.

The governor added that the state government would do all in its power to build on the confidence of investors to conduct business in the State.

Wike said that wooing investors remained critical to the development of the state, because it would generate employment.

“It is a priority for us to attract investors for our people to be employed; that is why we make security a priority,” he added.
