The Health Ministry, in a communiqué, said according to Section 9 of the Nigeria Tobacco Control Act 2015, once convicted, offenders are liable to a fine of at least N50, 000 and/or six months’ imprisonment.

Tagged the Clean Air Campaign, the ministry said the law would henceforth be taken seriously in a bid to protect and promote the citizens’ right to health, life, physical integrity and safety, The Punch reports.

The communiqué read, “The World Health Organisation estimates that worldwide, second-hand tobacco smoke is currently responsible for the deaths of about 600,000 people yearly, 80 per cent of which occur in low-income and middle-income countries like Nigeria.

“Smoking in public places is now banned in Nigeria. Section 9 of the Nigeria Tobacco Control Act 2015 stipulates that offenders, once convicted, are liable to a fine of not less than N50,000 or not less than six months’ imprisonment, or both.

Santos Backs Ronaldo Amidst Tax Evasion Accusations

Featured Image

Portugal coach Fernando Santos, says he totally trusts Cristiano Ronaldo as a man and a player, as he is accused of tax evasion in Madrid.

Prosecutors in Madrid have filed a complaint against the Portuguese star of tax evasion totalling €14.7 million.

Santos has launched a passionate defence of his star striker, insisting Ronaldo’s character should not be questioned.

“I’ve known him for many years,” he told a news conference ahead of Portugal’s Confederations Cup opener against Mexico in Kazan.

“I was his last coach in Portugal when he was 18 years old. I can put my hands on the fire for his character and integrity, as a man and an athlete. That’s my clear statement. I trust him 100 per cent as an athlete and as a man.”

Santos was pressed on the subject further but preferred to focus on on-field matters, adding: “I’m sure you want to ask the same questions but I will answer no more questions about Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I have a pact with my players, I have a great relationship with each of them. We’ve laid down that everything to do with their personal relationships is done outside the team.

“When we’re focused on a tournament, all those other issues, we don’t pay attention to.

“So you have to pay attention to what the sources are for this information. I never heard about some of the news being spread. Either I am deaf, and I’m not, everyone knows I’m a great listener, or you have to be careful about where this news comes from.

“Cristiano supports every single player in the team and we have a great relationship. There are no individuals. Each player supports the other.”

Arsenal Should Sign Top Class Players

Featured Image

John Hartson has told Arsenal they must match Manchester United, by signing top class players to challenge for trophies.

United managed to sign star players, without playing in the UCL and it paid off, as they qualified for the competition next season.

Hartson would very much like to see Arsenal do such, as they could only finish fifth last season.

“Their priority this summer is to be in for big players,” the former Gunners striker told Sky Sports.

“It’s difficult attracting big names, the biggest names in football when you’ve not got Champions League of course.

“But Manchester United were able to attract them when they didn’t have Champions League. They brought in the likes of Ibrahimoivc, Mkhitaryan, one or two others.

“It’s going to be difficult keeping hold of [Alexis] Sanchez but I think from Arsene Wenger’s point of view, I’ve not really got a problem with Arsene Wenger staying on as Arsenal manager.

“He is a terrific manager, a brilliant man, I was fortunate to have worked with Arsene Wenger during my time at Arsenal.

“But I really want to see him in for the big names that become available in the world of football, I mean the real top, top class players.

“That’s what Arsenal need to challenge and challenge for title honours, of course they just won the FA Cup.

“I just feel that they need to go in for the big, big players which become available just to make them competitive next season in terms of challenging for the title, because that is what the supporters want.”

However, Chelsea are yet to sign any player, with their bid for Sandro getting rejected, not the only bid they’ve had rejected.

“Our desire is to not sell any of our most important players,” Marotta told Corriere dello Sport.

“We said no to a very good offer from Chelsea for Alex Sandro.

“But we know that we are competing with clubs that are in a position to offer wages that are not rational for us. And players are always their own boss.

“I do not know how Alex Sandro reacted.”

INEC Issues Certificates To 5 Newly-Registered Political Parties

Featured Image

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued certificates of registration to the five newly-registered political parties in the country.

The parties are Action Democratic Party (ADP), All Democratic People’s Movement (ADPM), Advanced People’s Democratic Alliance (APDA), New Generation Party of Nigeria (NGP) and the Young Progressive Party (YPP).

INEC Registers APDA, Four Other New Political Parties

During the presentation of the certificates to the parties on Friday in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, urged them not to consider their registration as an end in itself.

He further said the registration should be seen as opportunity for the political parties to exercise their critical roles in the best interest of growing the country’s democracy.

“As you are aware, political parties are at the heart of our democracy. Under the Constitution, no Nigerian can contest an election conducted by lNEC unless he/she is sponsored by a political party.

“Similarly, under the Constitution, you are registered to operate as national political parties.

“As such, you should remain committed to the politics of principles and development of the entire nation as articulated in your party constitutions and manifestos which you submitted along with your applications for registration.

“You must eschew the politics of division, bitterness, mud-slinging and hatred.

“You must also be inclusive in all your activities by giving opportunity to all citizens, especially disadvantaged groups such as women, youths and persons with disabilities,” Mr. Yakubu said.

He assured the new parties would enjoy equal rights and privileges of recognised political parties under the Constitution, the Electoral Act as well as INEC’s regulations and guidelines.

“At sometime, the commission will continue to strictly monitor the activities of all political parties and will not hesitate to apply sanctions against any violation of the law governing the terms and conditions of your registration.

“I wish to remind all political parties that the law also provides for de-registration of parties. We shall vigorously apply this aspect of the law as the need arises,’’ he said.

290,000 Nigerians Apply For N-Power Jobs In 3 Days | Register Here

Featured Image

No less than 290,000 Nigerians have visited the N-power portal to apply for jobs on Friday, just three days after the portal was opened, a presidential aide said.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation, Afolabi Imoukhuede, made this known during an interactive session with the first batch of the scheme’s beneficiaries in Edo at the Urhokpota Hall, Benin City.

According to him, 200,000 graduates are already participating in the scheme while the next batch of 300,000 will be engaged from the new applicants.

“The recruitment portal opened on Wednesday and 290,000 applications have entered as at this morning.

“The next recruitment will be very competitive.

“If we do validation of data and any applicant fails at the point of recruitment he or she has lost the chance,” he said.

Imoukhuede expressed displeasure with the wave of wrong data fed into the portal by graduate applicants and said such problems were discouraging.

He told the volunteers that while the scheme was making efforts to assist them to validate their entries it would not do same for the next batch of recruits.

“The Federal Government is spending N6 billion on stipends to current beneficiaries every month and the amount is not a child’s play.

“It is a lifeline to lift you out of unemployment and out of poverty.

“This is a serious business to reduce unemployment and you have to maximize this chance,” he advised the youth.

The SSA advised applicants to file their applications by themselves and ensure that the information asked for in the application is correct and verifiable.

He acknowledged the challenges encountered by volunteers in the scheme which were largely caused by them and called on the new applicants to ensure that they did not make same mistakes.

Mr. Imoukhuede also said that many of the applicants residing in the rural areas stood better chance of being recruited as emphasis would be on residence of the applicants to curb rural-urban migration.

“We do not encourage state re-deployment because the scheme is unlike the National Youth Service Corps.

“Anyone who is not ready to do volunteer job in his state of domicile should not bother to apply,” he added.

NAN reports that the presidential aide announced that deployment of the non-graduate applicants successful from the screening of applications received in 2016 would be done in batches from July/August 2017.

Nigerian Govt Reacts As South African Communities Give Nigerians Quit Notice

Featured Image

The Nigerian mission in South Africa on Friday said it had waded into issues surrounding the alleged quit order given to Nigerians by two communities in that country.

Martin Cobham, Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner in South Africa, told the News Agency of Nigeria on telephone from Pretoria that the mission was on top of the situation.

NAN reports that the Nigeria Union in South Africa had accused two communities in that country of ordering Nigerians residing within their territories to vacate.

Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner in South Africa said that he had engaged in processes to nip in the bud whatever crisis or situation that could affect the welfare of Nigerians living in South Africa.

“I engaged the union leader who has given me the graphic details of what happened.

“In view of that I have engaged with the authorities here to bring in the community, the police and the Nigerians living there for a meeting so as to prevent any mayhem.

“On Monday, I am going to dispatch our officials to the Northern Cape Province to engage in a meeting with the local police and the community for a tripartite meeting,” he said.

The High Commissioner said that he would also meet with the authority to ensure that instruction was given to the police not to allow any outbreak of violence.

“All we are trying to ensure is to nip in the bud any breakdown of law and order or anything that could lead to violence.

“So, we in the embassy are on top of the situation. And I am engaging the union leader and my office is equally engaging the South African Foreign Ministry on the issue.

“So, I believe with this measure we will be able to contain all these excesses,” he said.

The President of the union, Ikechukwu Anyene, had alleged that the Kuruman community in Northern Cape Province also gave Nigerians till Friday, June 16 to leave.

Mr. Anyene also said that the Klaafontein community, Extension 5, Johannesburg, directed landlords not to renew the rent of Nigerians in the community.

He said that the grievance of the South Africans was that Nigerians were responsible for some social vices such as illicit drug trade and prostitution.
