Carragher: Liverpool Need Top Class Signings To Challenge For EPL

Featured Image

Former Liverpool player, Jamie Carragher believes quality signings is what the Reds need to challenge for the 2017-18 EPL.

Liverpool challenged for the league last season, but fell some way off, after poor outings against clubs tagged as small, as they finished fourth on the log.

However, the Reds were spectacular against top teams and Carragher believes what is needed to make it to the next stage is quality signings.

“The actual team, the XI, could go up against anyone, we saw that in the big games with some great results in those games,” Carragher told the official Liverpool website.

“But over the season, especially around Christmas and January, it was evident that the squad was not big enough or strong enough. That needs adding to.

“But rather than just adding players to the squad, you want to add players to the team. If you add three or four players and they go straight into the first XI, three or four of those who were playing week in, week out last season go to the bench.

“It makes the bench a lot stronger and your team a lot stronger. It is not just numbers. It is about getting the right quality that can go straight into the team.”

Donnarumma Will Still Play For Milan Next Season

Featured Image

Massimiliano Mirabelli, AC Milan sporting director insists Gianluigi Donnarumma will not be leaving the club this transfer window.

The young goalkeeper rejected the chance to extend his contract at the capital club, with his current contract expiring next season.

This has led to reports linking Donnarumma with a move away from the club, a notion Mirabelli has quashed, saying the decision to play him is up to Montella.

“Donnarumma is a great champion, a great guy and a Milan player,” he told Sportitalia. “For this next season, he will certainly play with us still.

“It’s the coach who makes the decisions. They say who will make the bench or sit in the stands – it is not in heaven or on earth.

“This applies to everyone – not only for Donnarumma, but also for the other players and those who will come.”

Donnarumma played all 38 league games for Milan in 2016-17, having broken into the side a year earlier.

Asensio After Scoring Hattrick For Spain: I Must Stay Humble

Featured Image

Marco Asensio is saying he must stay grounded, despite scoring a hat trick in the win over Macedonia.

Spain under-21 got their European championship off to a good start, and Asensio scored three superb goals in the 5-0 win.

However, the Real Madrid star is determined to stay humble and focus on their next match against Portugal.

“We knew that our first match would be complicated because we had to start well and I think we had a great game against a good team, who made it difficult,” he said.

“I’m happy for myself, but above all for the team. Now we must think about Portugal because the competition is very short and we can’t fail.

“I feel very well. The coach gives me a lot of freedom in attack and I’m very comfortable, roaming in attacking areas. You could see that I was very comfortable and I’m happy.

“I knew I had to keep working hard and be prepared if the opportunity arose. I’m always prepared and I’ve come to these finals in very good shape.

“I must be humble and keep working hard. The praise must not get to my head.”

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia has dissolved the state executive council.

The dissolution was contained in a statement signed and posted on the state government’s official website by the Permanent Secretary, Government House, Onyii Wamah, in the late hours of  Friday, June 16, 2017.

Gallas: Tottenham Are Quite Young For The UCL

Featured Image

William Galas believes Tottenham struggling in the Champions League is down to their young and inexperienced squad.

Tottenham made themselves a force to reckon with in the Premier League, but could not go far in the UCL.

Gallas reached the quarterfinals with Spurs back in 2010/11 and has blamed the recent struggles at Tottenham on inexperience.

“It was a big shame what happened to them last season, but this Tottenham squad is a little too young for the Champions League,” he said in quotes reported by The Daily Star.

“Against Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen in the group games, it showed that they needed more experience.

“The Champions League is different to the Premier League. You need experience, you need to be more clever and stay focused.

“If you compare our squad back then with now, we had many older and more experienced players.”

NNPC Forces Diesel Price Down To N175 Per Litre Across Nigeria

Featured Image

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has forced down the price of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), better known as Diesel, to between N175 to N200 per litre across the country, Vanguard reports.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, the apex oil firm said that the price crashed by 42 per cent over the last six months from N300 per litre recorded earlier in the year, due to strategic intervention efforts by the NNPC towards sustained improvement in the supply of the diesel.

He added that the intervention by the corporation also ensured that ex-depot prices of the commodity dropped to between N135 and N155 per litre.

Ughamadu further said that in the first quarter of 2017, retail prices of AGO, which is one of the deregulated products, shot to an all-time high of N300 per litre in major demand centres across the country.

He said such unpleasant situation placed a huge burden on truck drivers, who need the product for transporting their vehicles; the nation’s manufacturing sector, which requires it to run its operations; as well as on the masses, who need it for household power generation.

Ughamadu highlighted some of the NNPC’s strategic interventions in this regard to include improving the supply of AGO and remodeling of the product distribution to address sufficiency issues across the country.

He said, “Since January this year, we have worked very hard with relevant stakeholders to improve distribution from refinery depots, by implementing a robust loading programme.”

The NNPC further disclosed that as a result of consistent positive engagement with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), it equally extended the expansion of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) Foreign Exchange Intervention Scheme to accommodate diesel and Aviation Fuel.

“The general public is hereby assured that the Corporation would continue to ensure seamless supply and distribution of diesel and other petroleum products across the country to make the lives of Nigerians better,” he assured.

Nigeria Signs N4.34bn Mou With Dangote, Others For Reconstruction Of Apapa Wharf Road

The Nigerian government, through the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Dangote Group and other stakeholders for the reconstruction of Apapa wharf road in Lagos.

NAN reports that by the signing of the N4.34 billion MoU, the site has been handed over to Dangote and other stakeholders to commence reconstruction of the road.

Speaking at the signing of the MoU in Lagos on Saturday, Fashola said that it was difficult to move cargo due to the gridlock caused by the bad state of the road.

He explained that the decision of the transporters to use the road instead of rail for haulage increased gridlock, caused degeneration as well as well as hardship to residents of Apapa.

“As a result of all these unsavory practices, we have reached a point of near total gridlock, it is difficult to move cargo in or out, difficult for residents to get home and this must stop,” the minister said.

“We have finished with the design, we now have a Bill of Quantity and the cost of the road is N4.34 billion to be funded and paid for by these three groups, Flour Mills of Nigeria, AG Dangote Construction Company Ltd and NPA.”

The minister pleaded with My Nuru, Apapa area commander of the Nigerian Police Force, to apprehend reckless drivers who drive against traffic during the period of construction.

Who Wants Biafra?

Who Wants Biafra? – Minabere Ibelema

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

In studies of political movements, there is one constant finding: the sway of extreme elements is always disproportionate to their numbers. They are more fanatical. Their rhetoric is more emotional. And they don’t hesitate to threaten or intimidate those who hold less radical views. When level heads fail to prevail, the outcome is often disastrous.

This article was written by Minabere Ibelema and first published on The Punch Newspaper. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

That was certainly the case in the events leading to the secession of Eastern Nigeria in 1967. The pogrom against Easterners in Northern Nigeria was the precipitating event. Yet, historians have noted that the horrors per se were not enough to make the Eastern populace want to exit Nigeria. The prevailing view was that the country was undergoing a horrific crisis but normalcy would be restored. The declaration of secession was propelled by those who opted for the most radical option, and that included those who were driven by political ambition.

The horror of the pogrom was real, as was the anger it generated. But it was the exploitation of the emotions through massive propaganda that generated popular support for secession.

Lt. Col. Emeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, the military governor of Eastern Nigeria, told the world that he declared secession after due consultation. But quite a few historians and other Biafran leaders take issue with that claim. Among them is Ntieyong U. Akpan, who headed the Biafran civil service.“[T]he majority of people in former Eastern Nigeria, including the Ibos, did not initially support secession, and would have rejected the whole idea if they had been freely and fairly consulted,”Akpan wrote in his memoirs, “The struggle for secession, 1966-1970.”

Of course, fair consultation in the context was hardly possible. Emotions ruled and empowered the radical stance. Alas, that history may be repeating itself.

There is certainly an indication of that in the communique issued by a coalition of Igbo groups in response to the Arewa youths’ ultimatum that the Igbo should leave the North by Oct. 1. In the communique, the Eastern Consultative Assembly demands that the Igbo be allowed to leave Nigeria if the country is not restructured immediately. “Restructure Nigeria now or let us go,” the communiqué asserts.

Any student of group dynamics would readily discern that this statement is a compromise between radical and moderate wings of the assembly. If the pattern of such discussions held true, the radicals pushed for an independent Biafra while the moderates called for restructuring. With such polar positions, it is inevitable that a compromise would yield a demand for the improbable: Restructure now or let us go.

That the moderates acquiesced to the “now” demand is a demonstration of the sway of radical elements, a sway that will probably loom larger with time. Incidentally, the name Eastern Consultative Assembly was lifted from Ojukwu’s strategy book.

General Yakubu Gowon’s administration created 12 states out of four regions virtually overnight. But Nigeria is now a democracy, and in democracies, nothing happens overnight, not even the replacement of a broken street light. There are deliberations, negotiations, rejections and compromises, and these take a while to play out.

The Arewa youths that issued an ultimatum to the Igbo also seem bent on reprising the horror meted out to their 1966 counterparts. The only difference is that this time round they are humane enough to give a three-month grace period.

Northerners bore the brunt of the bloodshed of the January 1966 coup, which was led by Igbo officers. Yet the pogrom against the Igbo and other Easterners didn’t begin until several months later. It evidently wasn’t spontaneous mass hysteria. It was fermented by radicals — both civilian and military — who saw an opportunity to settle ethnic scores and advance political ambitions.

Despite the incitation, most Northerners were still horrified by the mass killings of people with whom they had lived peaceably for years. Had the masses in the North been as bloodthirsty as the radicals, few Igbo would have escaped. Quite the contrary, many Northerners provided shelter and facilitated Igbo escapes. Moreover, as General Joseph Garba recounted in his own memoirs, “‘Revolution’ in Nigeria: Another View,” the bloodshed would have been much worse had many Northern officers not risked their lives to quell it.

A tragic aspect of the current Biafra advocacy and radical Northern response is that both sides seem immersed in parochial views of the realities of the 1960s crises. There appears to be little awareness of the complications caused by the expulsion of Easterners from the North, not to talk of the loss of about one million lives during the ensuing civil war.

In the ultimate case of strange bed fellows, the Arewa youths’ ultimatum was supported by Biafra advocates MASSOB. Yet the expulsion of the 1960s caused considerable problems on both sides. Even before the outbreak of the civil war, a major crisis in Igboland was the challenge of accommodating hundreds of thousands of Igbo in a highly densely populated area. Ironically, that problem was eased by the drafting of young men into the Biafran army to fight and die.

The North experienced a reverse problem: a skills vacuum. With the departure of Igbo tradesmen and professionals—physicians, engineers, administrators —many Northern establishments found themselves barely functional.  As then Major General Olusegun Obasanjo recounted in his own memoirs, “My Command,” the Army Corps of Engineers in the North was so depleted it had to resort to a crash programme for re-staffing.

These are just scratching the surface of the complications, and they are certain to re-occur, probably in greater magnitude.

Perhaps because I am not privy to the details of the neo-Biafra advocacy, I am not sure that there is a projected map of the advocated Biafra. In 1967, the boundary was easy enough to determine: Eastern Nigeria became Biafra. Today, things are a lot more complicated. So, when the Eastern Consultative Assembly demands immediate restructuring or “let us go,” what do they mean by “us”? Just the Igbo or other Easterners, as the name suggests?

The map of the advocated Biafra would seem easy enough if it is exclusively for the Igbo, but it isn’t that simple. It begs the question of who are the Igbo? Are the Ikwerre of Rivers State included? They are an amalgam of Igbo and Ijaw cultures. How about the Midwestern Igbo, with their similarly hybrid identity?

Things get a lot more complicated, of course, if “us” includes all Easterners. Non-Igbo Easterners were the least enthusiastic for the 1960s Biafra. Though sentiments have shifted somewhat over the years, it is improbable that a majority would embrace Biafra now that they have their own states. There may be considerable strife over such a choice.

Like the many other multi-ethnic countries around the globe, Nigeria is like a marriage involving many people. As with actual marriages, if one spouse incessantly expresses the desire to get out, there is bound to be a souring of interest all around. The Arewa youths’ ultimatum to the Igbo is readily a dangerous development in this regard.

Unlike in 1966, when things quickly got out of hand, the indications are that moderates will contain the political extremes this time. And their clarion call may well be another version of the triple Rs: re-negotiation, redistribution and/or restructuring.

This article was written by Minabere Ibelema and first published on The Punch Newspaper. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Deposit Banks May Resume Dollar Loans As Naira Appreciates

Featured Image

Following the palpable improvement in the value of the Naira, there are indications that the Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) will soon start to raise dollar-denominated loans, especially Eurobonds.

It is understood that banks were now favourably disposed to raising dollar loans following the creation of the Investor & Exporters FX window by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the subsequent appreciation of the naira.

Naira Records Further Gain Against Dollar, Trades At N365/$

The Punch, while quoting top sources in the banking sector, is reporting that another reason the banks are considering Eurobonds is because some of them are looking at refinancing their dollar loans, which will soon start falling due.

A top bank executive said, “Many banks have no choice than to raise dollar loans or Eurobonds partly to refinance their Eurobonds falling due, or to take advantage of the appreciation in the naira value to raise dollar funding.”

It was gathered that while Guaranty Trust Bank Plc’s $400m Eurobond is due in November, Fidelity Bank Plc’s $300m is due next May. Access Bank Plc has $350m of bonds due in July.

GTBank has said it has no plans to issue fresh Eurobonds, but Fidelity Bank and Access Bank have yet to decide.

This is just as economic and financial experts have agreed that the banks will start to raise dollar-denominated loans.

Even so, more lenders will issue Eurobonds because they need dollars to offer loans in the United States currency or to repay debt, an analyst at Vetiva Capital Management Limited, Mr. Lekan Olabode, told Bloomberg, adding that more banks would issue Eurobonds, because they needed dollars to offer loans and to repay debt.

CBN Introduces New Rules For FOREX Market

Already, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated has said it is planning to raise $400m five-year convertible bond this month to refinance debt and provide short-term bridge funding for non-performing loans at its Nigerian unit.

Experts believe more banks will raise dollar loans this year and next year.

Already, United Bank for Africa Plc has raised $500m in its first Eurobond sale.

A number of reputable celebrity news websites – Entertainment Weekly, US Weekly and People magazines – confirmed the news on Saturday but the exact date of the birth and gender of the babies are yet to be publicly announced, BBC reports.

This follows almost a week of speculation about whether the pop superstar had secretly gone into labour.

News that the songstress had given birth, which was first reported by People magazine and US Weekly, ignited social media, with the so-called “Bey hive” fan group buzzing over the yet unrevealed sexes and names of the latest additions to the Carter Clan.

Also reporting, Entertainment news outlet E! confirmed that the power couple was spotted at a Los Angeles area hospital on Thursday.

The speculation became high after an unidentified woman was photographed on Friday carrying a large bouquet of pink, blue and purple flowers — complete with a card that appeared to read “B + J” — along with twin pink and blue balloons in the shape of feet that read “Baby Girl” and “Baby Boy.”

Beyoncé had announced she was expecting twins on the first day of February. The Instagram post immediately broke the internet, getting more than eight million likes in the first 24 hours, and smashing the Guinness World Record to officially become the most-liked post in the site’s history.

Sharing an image of herself on the set of Edward Scissorhands, she told her 103 million followers: “We would like to share our love and happiness.

“We have been blessed two times over. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes.”

She signed off the message “The Carters”, a reference to herself, husband Jay-Z and their child, Blue Ivy, who is just five years old.

Parma Earn Promotion To Serie B Through Playoff

Featured Image

Parma are one step closer to a return to Serie A after sealing promotion to the Italian second tier on Saturday.

Parma were one of Italy’s most entertaining teams in the 1990s, winning three European titles and boasting a star-studded line-up including Gianluigi Buffon,Fabio Cannavaro, Hernan Crespo, Lilian Thuram, Gianfranco Zola and Juan Sebastian Veron.

However, Parma ran into deep financial troubles in the following two decades, culminating in their bankruptcy in 2015 and subsequent drop into Serie D, the lowest level of professional football in Italy.

The newly reborn club went unbeaten last season as they climbed into the third tier, but Roberto D’Aversa‘s men had to settle for second place behind Filippo Inzaghi‘s Venezia in Group B of Lega Pro this term.
