WAEC Announces New Fees For Collection Of Certificate

Featured Image

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has urged GCE candidates to endeavour to collect their certificates within four years of writing the examination as any delay beyond that will attract custody fee.

Demianus Ojijeogu, the Head of Public Affairs Department (WAEC), Nigeria disclosed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, commonly referred to as WAEC GCE, is usually taken in November/December every year.

Mr. Ojijeogu said: “the normal charge for the certificate is N3, 500 and only payable by those whose certificates were issued between zero and four years.

“But from five to nine years is N8, 500; 10 to 14 years N13, 500; 15 to 19 years N18, 500 while 20 years and above will be charged N23, 500.

“These charges are (for) custody fee; for keeping the certificates for so long because it occupies space in our office. It will also serve as a deterrent to others.

“I don’t know the reason why people will sit for exams and their certificates are ready yet they will not come for collection. What was the essence of the certificate in the first place?’’

He also said that requirements for collection of the GCE certificates within Nigeria were an application letter, sworn affidavit from the High Court, online result print- out, one passport-size photograph, photo card and identity card.

Supreme Court Sacks Nigerian Senator “Abubakar Danladi” And Lawmaker “Herman Hembe”

Featured Image

The Supreme Court has sacked Abubakar Danladi, a senator representing Taraba North in the Nigerian Senate.

The apex court also declared Alhaji Shuaibu Lau, as the senator to represent Taraba North. The court gave the orders while delivering judgment in the appeal filed by Lau.

Lau had challenged the decision of the Court of Appeal that upturned his victory during the primary elections, that he was wrongfully substituted.

The apex court ordered him to refund all salaries and allowances earned in the Senate within 90 days.

It also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the certificate issued to Danladi and issue a fresh certificate of return to Lau.

Mr. Danladi was sacked by the Supreme Court on the same day a member of the House of Representatives, Herman Hembe, was also sacked by the apex court.

Mr. Hembe, who represents Vandikwa/ Konshisha constituency of Benue State was not the valid candidate of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress, the court ruled.

The court also ordered that Mr. Hembe be replaced with Dorathy Mato, who was declared the right winner of the APC primaries.

It is also understood that Mr. Hembe was ordered to return all the salaries and allowances he received as lawmaker since he was sworn in in 2015.

DSS Foils Massive Plots By Terrorists To Cause Mayhem During Eid-El-Fitr Celebration

Featured Image

The Department of State Services (DSS) has uncovered and foiled a massive plot by suspected terrorists to carry out a coordinated attack in some major cities and states – including Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto and Maiduguri – during the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

In a statement on Friday signed by Tony Opuiyo, the DSS said, “The past few weeks, this service has uncovered a sinister plot by terrorist elements to stage series of coordinated attacks using explosives on different cities across the country.”

Opuiyo, an operative of the service, who made the disclosure in Abuja, said two suspects — Yusuf Adamu and Abdulmuminu Haladu — were arrested in Sokoto in connection with the plot in the early hours of Friday.

According to the statement, Mr. Adamu and his accomplice were to command the operation in Kano.

“However, the Service had earlier arrested the facilitator of the Kano attack, an explosive expert by name Bashir Mohammed at Unguwar Barnawa, Shekar Madaki, Kumbatso LGA, Kano State on June 20”.

“Their plan, together with others now at large, was to assemble the explosives and use them on select targets during the Eid-el-Fitr Celebrations”.

“Their aim was to hit on soft targets such as markets, public parks, public processions, recreation centres, as well as worship centres especially the Eid Praying Grounds and other densely populated areas during the forthcoming Eid-el-Fitr Sallah celebration.  The latest plan by the terrorists was to unleash mayhem on Kano, Sokoto, Kaduna and Maiduguri,” the agency said.

The agency said during the arrest of Mr. Mohammed in Kumbotso, Kano, a search was conducted at his residence where it recovered “Eight (8) AK-47 rifles, Twenty (20) fully loaded AK-A7 magazines, Twenty-seven (27) hand grenades, Seven hundred and ninety-three (793) rounds of live ammunition.”

One gas cylinder, three laptops, one mobile phone, a motorcycle, a car, and a printer were also recovered.

The DSS also said it uncovered plans by the terrorists to infiltrate the ranks of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, which has been demanding the release of its leader Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, held without trial since December 2015.

“This is in an attempt to assume a formidable cover to unleash violence and evoke a complete state of chaos in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja during the group’s Qudus Day Procession/Rally scheduled for Friday in Abuja and several States in the Northern parts of the country”.

“Sequel to this, the Service is warning members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) to desist from staging any form of procession or demonstration as the terrorists will seize the opportunity to unleash mayhem”. Mr. Opuiyo said.

Meanwhile, the federal government has earlier declared Monday and Tuesday next week as public holidays for the Islamic festival.

“We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mr AY Makun on what promises to be yet another blockbuster production. AY is a passionate, determined, dedicated and hardworking individual. IPOB Leader Kanu Gives Condition For Election To Hold In Anambra State, South East (Watch Video)

Featured Image

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has said that if the Nigerian Government does not agree to conduct referendum for Biafra, there will not be any form of election in the Southeast during the 2019 general elections.

The embattled leader also added that the November 18 governorship election in Anambra state will not hold if the federal government fails to conduct a referendum on Biafra.

Nnamdi Kanu Defiles Court Order, Addresses Pro-Biafra Crowd (Watch Video)

“If the federal government does not agree with us on a date for referendum, there will be no elections in the southeast, we are starting with Anambra come November this year. There will be no governorship election in Anambra state,” Kanu said.

Speaking from his father’s palace in Afara Ukwu Ibeku, Umuahia, Abia state, Kanu threatened that members of his group might also boycott the 2019 general election.

Biafra: Nigeria Could Seek Revocation Of Nnamdi Kanu’s Bail

He also said that “Nigerian government should build as many prisons as possible to jail all Biafrans because there is no going back and we are ready to go there unless the federal government gives us Biafra.

“In 2019, the whole of Biafra land will not vote for any president. There will be no senator, there will be no house of reps, there will be no house of assembly and there will be no councilor-ship elections in Biafra land if the federal government fails to call for a referendum.

“We are not like any other people. People like us don’t come twice. That’s why I know that with the last breath in this very body that Biafra will be restored. There’s nothing anybody can do about it. Tell them that’s what I said. Nobody on this earth can stop Biafra.”

As Dino Melaye’s Political Sunset Looms

Featured Image

As Dino Melaye’s Political Sunset Looms By Peter Claver Oparah

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

For Dino Melaye, Senator representing Kogi West senatorial district and the rambunctious alter ego of tainted Senate President, Bukola Saraki, these are not the best of times. Melaye, noted for his high octane parody. He is a famed comedian that seeks to reduce serious issues of state to spates of comedy. He is a self-fangled masker and reveler that would have made an A-grade listing in a hilarious comedy. But as it is now, he has no time for comedy.

This article was written by Peter Claver Oparah. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

When last did you see Dino Melaye prancing in distasteful amusement on the national space as he was wont to do? Seemingly, Melaye has no time for jokes and pranks for now. He is afflicted by a nagging headache. The situation he has in his hands provides him an intractable  handful. He has been struck down by migraine. He has lost his reveling instinct. He no longer has time to loiter and lay about on social media, posting raunchy pictures of his questionable opulence, even when he had not been known to have any other profitable vocation in life apart from politics.

The source of Dino Melaye’s present affliction is not Saharareporters, the medium that has trolled and comprehensively dragged him to the lowest ground, especially in his dubious academic claims. Sure, Dino was thoroughly humbled as the Saharareporters inquest lasted. It was one cup he prayed fervently should pass him. He threatened, blew hot air and issued impotent moratorium but these didn’t stop the fiery medium from ensuring that he was dragged down the high horse he has built for himself, especially since he formed  illicit cahoots with Saraki. Melaye cut a very pitiable picture as he cobbled very riotous facts together to explain away his indecorous academic qualifications. He has no real answer to the vacuous claim of earning chains of degrees from world renowned institutions like London School of Economics and Harvard University. Even his claim of basic degree from Ahmadu Bello University was puckered by so many loopholes that even the harried effort of the Vice Chancellor of the University to bail him threw up more questions than when the inquest started. The entire issue exposed a well-patched, insecure and fidgety persona that Dino must have thrown a party when the issue naturally ebbed down.

But today, Dino Melaye is facing a different problem. This one looks so potent that it requires no arrangee Vice Chancellor to deal with. It is so serious that Dino Melaye has suddenly been afflicted with an unusual bout of sobriety that is alien to his noisy self.  His present cup of hemlock is that his people in Kogi West have threatened to rusticate him from the Senate and drag him home like a prodigal son. Those he claim to have elected him to represent them in the Senate (only for him to serve Saraki and his corrupt interests) are so piqued with him that they have threatened to go the whole hog in sacking him from the Senate where they claim he has represented everything but them. His people have sworn to put an end to the vicarious liability he has become to them, to the APC on whose back he rode to power and the Nigerian nation. The people of Kogi West have already promised a nation that has tolerated the many indiscretions of Melaye that they are ready to undo the embarrassment they caused the country by sending Melaye to the Senate. They have fallen just short of offering a national apologia for the rude shock Melaye has happily been to the present resolution to break away from the sordid and decrepit past.

Why should Melaye be worried by the threat of his people to call him back when such similar efforts in the past, involving other legislators have fallen short of their targets? Why should Melaye lose any sleep over a constitutional matter that was deliberately made inoperable by the same constitution that provided for it by throwing such hefty roadblocks on the way to its implementation? At first, there was no doubt that Melaye must have in his quaint manner, laughed off the threat to recall him from the Senate. He must have been assured of the impracticability of the recall process by his emergency admirers and soulmates who lick up his nuisance value to the system and deign it as a way of reaching back to the order that has deepened their political woes. There was no doubt that initially, Melaye must have waved off the threat of his recall in another bout of parody for which he is gaining unchallenged notoriety. There was no doubt that at the early stages of this recall process, Melaye must have sourced strength from the cumbersome process involved in recalling legislators, which makes it almost impossible to practicalise. He must have spiced up his contempt for his recall efforts with regular tales of doubtful assassination attempts, which many people believe was stage-managed to whip cheap sentiments in his favor.

But, as it is today, Melaye knows more than anybody else that he is in soup. He knows that his political eclipse is nigh and this has forced a drastic reduction in his clowning values. His penchant to subject Nigerians to mocking shows of disdains must have been seriously threatened by his present travails.  He knows that those that want to see his back from the Senate are not smiling. He knows that those that want to force him home, like the errant child are not joking. He knows indeed that there is real fire on the mountain and he lacks the idea to quench it. Melaye knows that his recall process is no longer a child’s play. He knows that his traducers are dead serious and he is seeing quite a possibility that his political foes may well walk through the many booby-traps that dog the recall process to get him sacked ingeniously from the Senate. Melaye must have seen as real the visage of a rusticated loafer which Nigerians will term him should his recall process sail through. Fear of an uncertain future, from what he took was an assured present in Saraki’s senate, must be forming hideous circles in his head at present. What a pity!

Melaye’s political opponents claim he does not represent them but his selfish interests which can be gleaned by his many annoying theatrical maledictions in the senate. They claim they have been under-represented while his corrupt interests have been over-represented. They claim, most importantly, that through his petulance and quite disgusting tendency to cozy up to embarrassing theatrics, that Dino Melya has brought disgrace, shame and opprobrium to them as people of Kogi West senatorial district. They claim his actions have exposed them to ridicule and have brought many questions of their capacity to make right representational choice to the country’s highest legislative chamber. They make a legion of many other claims for why they why they want Dino rusticated in the senate. Give it to them. Melaye’s afflicters are well schooled, measured and methodical in the task of recalling him and that is enough to drive the fear of Satan from Melaye.

But then, in the midst of these claims, which are quite rife in Nigeria today against members of Saraki’s senate, considering the quality  of representatives that people the country’s legislature at present, the people of Kogi West, as well as Melaye, knew they face a very herculean task in withdrawing him from the senate. They were quite aware that the present constitution we are operating erected impregnable bulwarks on the way of constituents to take back their errant legislators. Particularly, the provision in the constitution that demands aggrieved constituents to mobilize the signature of 50% of all registered voters in a particular constituency before a recall process could happen, almost makes it impossible to recall legislators. This accounts for why supposedly elected representatives of the people spit on the faces of their constituents today. They feel quite secure that their people will find it impossible to mobilize half of the registered voters in their constituencies to bring them back. Dino must have reveled in this realisal and those that urge him on in his masking art must have woven a cloth of impregnability for him as the recall axe dangled.

The Kogi West people knew this fortress but their disgust for the embarrassment that Melaye’s representation heaped on them must have made them to attempt to walk through the mine-laden terrain. It is apparent that the people of Kogi West were very determined to break this fortress and yank Melaye off the senate. They did, urged on by Nigerian masses, who see Dino Melaye as a loud, boastful and empty bombast that has whittled down the value of the Nigerian senate. The people of Kogi West,, as well as Melaye, know that with this settled, Melaye will not survive a recall referendum. But he never believed we will get to that stage.

Just few days ago, the representatives of the people of Kogi State went to the INEC headquarters in Abuja with several sacks containing the signatures of over 188,000 registered voters in Kogi West. This is 8,000 more than the 50% threshold required by the constitution, of the 300,000 registered voters in Kogi West! By that visit, the process of the recall of Dino Melaye from the senate has gained full traction and Dino has become a marked man; a really troubled man. The pun master has lost his vibe. The stunt chieftain has been out-stunned. His political enemies hold the longer end of the stick and Dino Melaye’s political head is placed on the chopping block; ready for a brutal severing.

From all seeming indices, there is no stopping the recall of Melaye from the senate. Infact, he has exhausted his pranks to get a reprieve. His regular street shows and those of his rain-soaked supporters bespeak of a troubled soul that has lately realized that he has burned all his candles on the wrong side of history. He lacks redemptive grace and it is arguable if his people could be appeased by a late show of remorse. Of course, they must be guided by a greater sense of service to Nigeria to displace the nuisance Dino Melaye has become in the senate.  As he stutters in seeking fitting adjectives to dismiss his looming woes, Melaye cuts a picture of disrobed monk, grappling with an unclad life in the cold. He has destroyed his bridges, burned his aces and Nigerians are hoping that Kogi  West people should recall this anomie to serve warming to his legions of misguided colleagues that it is possible to shred them of the cloak that has made them seemingly invincible in the face of bitter protestation of their conducts by Nigerians. Dino Melaye’s recall will be an apt way of saying; good riddance to bad rubbish. Expect a floodgate of potent recall processes of the many errant legislators should Melaye’s recall process sail through. Nigeria needs this timely sledgehammer to chisel its exuberant legislature in line.

As Dino Melaye’s Political Sunset Looms By Peter Claver Oparah

Petroleum Marketers Threaten To Begin Nationwide Strike On July 1

Featured Image

The leadership of the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association (DAPPMA) has declared its intention to shut down its facilities and lay off staff from 1 July.

Sahara Reporters said the association reached the decision at a meeting over the weekend.

It is understood that after the meeting, the leadership of the association disclosed that its members have not been happy owing to the massive debts totaling $2billion accruing from fuel subsidy payments and the accompanying foreign exchange and interest rate differentials being owed them by the Nigerian government – figures that could not be confirmed by the prominent online outlet due to the widespread corruption in the petroleum marketing regime in Nigeria.

According to DAPPMA, it members have been placed  under unbearable pressure from financial institutions in the shape of threats of liquidation of their businesses and assets on account of mounting interest payments and effects of devaluation arising from the protracted non-payment of subsidy claims.

The situation, DAPPMA added, has manifested in members ‘ inability to meet operating expenses due to the devaluation of the naira from N197 to N285 and later to over N305 to $1 between 2014 and 2015 as well as that accrued during the subsidy regime.

“Despite several meetings and promises, including an earlier one with the Chief of Staff to the President, which was followed by the audience granted by the acting President to downstream operators on the 23 and 24 May, after which the acting President directed the Minister of Finance to settle all verified claims within two weeks, the operators have not been able to get what is due to them as they believe that the government is beginning to take them for granted,” the association said.

Another complaint made by the association is related to foreign exchange allocations by the NNPC, which it described as lopsided and injurious to its members’ well-being. This, DAPPMA explained, has rendered over 198 tank farms and depots redundant. DAPPMA added that NNPC’s intervention has ignored market realities and remains opaque.

“We are actually tired of the antics of NNPC, which has resorted to sharp practices in all aspects of petroleum product supplies and yet, incurring a huge subsidy bill with taxpayers monies,” said DAPPMA.

Tottenham Waiting For Everton To Lower Asking Price For Ross Barkley

Tottenham Hotspur have expressed a willingness to wait for Everton to lower their asking price for Ross Barkley as the transfer window progresses

Ross Barkley,23, whose contract expires next summer, is rumoured to be on the way out of Goodison Park after stalling on an extension to his current deal, with Ronald Koeman reportedly keen to move the player on.

According to Sky Sports News, Everton value Barkley at £50m, which is deemed too high by Spurs, but they will keep monitoring the England international until the window’s deadline.

Barkley is a product of the Toffees’ academy, making his debut in 2011, and has made over 175 appearances, scoring 27 goals.

Marcus Rashford Wanted To Be Like Andrea Pirlo – Paul McGuinness

Featured Image

Manchester United‘s former youth coach Paul McGuinness has revealed that Marcus Rashford initially wanted to be a central midfielder as he idolised Italy legend Andrea Pirlo.

Rashford, 19, joined Man United from Fletcher Moss Rangers in 2005, and the Englishman came through the youth system with the English giants before making his first-team debut in 2015.

The teenager has already chalked up 19 goals for the club and is expected to be a prominent figure in the Red Devils’ attack for next season.

According to McGuinness, Rashford initially saw himself as a central midfielder in the mould of Pirlo, before being pointed in a different direction.

“We decided, myself, Warren Joyce and Colin Little, that he was a very good footballer. He could be a No.10, a winger, beat people, he used to drop off into midfield,” McGuinness told the Manchester Evening News.

“There was one tournament where he wanted to play like Pirlo. But we saw his potential to be a striker. We worked on his body shape, different runs. He’s a really, really intelligent lad in terms of football. He picked it up very quickly.”

Steven Gerrard Was Adamant About Joining Chelsea In 2005 – Rick Parry

Featured Image

Former Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has recalled how Steven Gerrard was “adamant” about joining Chelsea in 2005.

Except for a spell with Los Angeles Galaxy in the twilight of his career, Gerrard spent the entirety of his playing days at Anfield, and is now coaching the Reds Under-18 team.

However, he was a target for Jose Mourinho during the Portuguese’s first spell at Stamford Bridge, and both player and club issued statements announcing his decision to leave Merseyside at the time.

Gerrard ultimately decided against a move to West London, but when Parry was asked by the Liverpool Echo how close the talisman came to leaving, he replied: “Way too close.

“It’s quite interesting when you reflect on that time. People frequently say who are the signings you are proudest of and who gave you the most pleasure. In many ways it was Steven and Carra – keeping players is as important as buying them.

“Clearly, Steven came very close (to leaving) twice. In fact on the second occasion we thought we had lost him. The chairman and I went to see him at Melwood and there was no changing his mind. He was adamant but, fortunately, he did change his mind.

“We tried to outline that he was at the centre of all our plans. Steven’s dilemma was he wanted to win trophies and would he have a better chance of doing that elsewhere with greater resources?

“Steven’s head had been turned and he was tempted but when it came to it he wanted to stay. He phoned me late at night. He said: ‘You’re not going to believe this but will you have me back again?’ The obvious answer was yes.”

John Terry Considering Offer From Championship Side Aston Villa

Featured Image

John Terry is weighing up an offer from Championship side Aston Villa, according to The Guardian.

However, the report suggests the 36-year-old defender still believes some Premier League sides will come in for him as he contemplates his next move after leaving Chelsea.

John Terry returned to the Premier League champions’ training base at Cobham this week to maintain his fitness before the expiry of his last contract at the club on 30 June

Aston Villa’s city rivals, Birmingham, have also made clear their intention to make him a marquee arrival this summer, with the manager, Harry Redknapp, pushing his credentials to the Championship club’s board.

The Villa owner, Dr Tony Xia, was asked about Terry’s potential signing by a supporter on social media on Wednesday and responded: “Quoted Jose M. ‘I am not going to talk about a player who still belongs to another club’ as JT’s contract with CFC expires until 1/7.”

Manchester United Make £62m Bid For PSG Defender Marquinhos

Featured Image

Paris Saint-Germain have been offered £62million from Manchester United for the services of Brazilian centre-half Marquinhos, according to Globo Esporte.

The Brazilian paper reports that United have targeted the defender, despite previously completing a deal for Victor Lindelof this summer.

Marquinhos had a good season for the Ligue 1 giants making 44 appearances in all competitions.

But, should United want to land him, they would have to beat off competition from Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus who are all said to be interested.

However, the report also claims that he is unlikely to make the move away from PSG this summer.

Marquinhos has a contract with the Ligue 1 side until June 2019.

The 23-year-old has been at PSG for four seasons after a move from Roma in 2013, clocking up 155 appearances in all competitions since.

However, Marquinhos recently claimed he was not looking to move on ahead of the 2018 World Cup, saying: “I am happy in Paris. The ambition of the club is ambitious.

“PSG do not want to sell me and, alongside Marco Verratti, I am part of the basis of the club’s project.

“Aside from that, it will depend on the negotiations (for a contract extension) because it is never simple, but I think that I will stay.”

Chelsea Reach Areement With Lyon For The Sale Of Bertrand Traore

Featured Image

Lyon are in advanced talks with Chelsea’s Bertrand Traore in a deal that would cost around £16million, according to the Daily Mail.

Traore impressed on loan with Dutch club Ajax, helping them reach the Europa League final.

Bertrand Traore is currently on vacation so the deal may not be finalised until next week

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed the talks earlier this week and believes the transfer proves the club is heading in the right direction.

“We’re fine-tuning the talks,” Aulas said.

“It’s a very ambitious operation, one that fits with what we had said.

“I hope to be able to conclude the deal in the next 10 days, if possible before the end of the week.”

The 21-year-old spent last season out on loan at Ajax where he helped the Dutch side reach the final of the Europa League, scoring 13 goals in all competitions.

Traore only played 16 games for Chelsea’s first team and clearly doesn’t feature in Antonio Conte’s plans.
