The discussion was specifically on the case of recently apprehended billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudidumeme Onuamadike a.k.a Evans, as the police chief added that the kidnap kingpin should be used to set an example to youths on risk inherent in such criminal venture.

He lamented that Evans “has changed the face of kidnapping in this country”, saying the fact that he collected $1million ransom on six different occasions, was enough to lure some youths into the illegal business.

Therefore, the police boss said there was urgent need to review existing laws on kidnapping with a view to ensuring stiffer punishment for the perpetrators.

Idris further said that a total of 2000 kidnap suspects are currently in police custody, insisting that the least sanction for kidnappers should be life imprisonment.

His words: “We should start looking at punishment and the possibility of establishing special courts to address issues of kidnapping.

“On daily basis we are arresting hundreds of suspects. We should look for a way to review our laws and impose sanctions like we have in some states like Anambra, Lagos, Kano and Imo.

“We need to review those punishments, we should have a time frame for conclusion of trial of suspects”.

CBN Warns Against Abuse Of The Naira | Offenders Liable To N50,000 Fine Or 6-Month Imprisonment

Featured Image

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has cautioned members of the public against ill handling of the nation’s currency, adding “that if you are hawking and abusing naira, you will pay fine of N50,000 or risk six months imprisonment or both.”

According to the Assistant Director, Currency Operations Department of the apex bank, Benedict Maduagwu, the cost of maintaining the naira note was expensive.

Maduagwu, who made this known in Lagos on Friday while addressing the media at the ongoing CBN Fair with the theme, “Promoting Financial Stability and Economic Development”, said presently, the huge cost of currency management in the country has grown more than that N192 billion in recent times.

Daily Sun quoted him as saying: “CBN is promoting the cashless policy because we discovered that the way currency is being handled and abused could cause some diseases. So the efforts in the cashless policy and also the public sensitisation is to tell people how to handle our naira, how to carry clean naira; these are all aimed at reducing the huge cost of currency management.

“In the recent times, we have carried out what we call sting operations on those that illegally hawk our naira, which is a crime. The CBN’s stand is very clear, that if you are hawking and abusing naira, you will pay fine of N50,000 or risk six months imprisonment or both.”

“The way currency is being handled, it is being abused and the cost is huge. As at 2005 to 2010, it was over N192 billion and as i speak it is more than that.”

According to him, there are interventions under the CBN, which are promoting the wellbeing and also diversifying the economy like the Anchor Borrowers Scheme.

He added: “We have N220 billion MSME intervention scheme and about 60 per cent of it is reserved for women. We also have it for the crippled, we also have the youth development empowerment programme, which has to do with corps members that have served. They can access it and have N3 million as part of efforts to reduce unemployment in the country.”

Any Attempt To Arrest Arewa Youths Will Lead To Problems – Junaid Mohammed

Featured Image

A Second Republic lawmaker and Northern elder statesman, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has warned that the arrest of Arewa youths over the quit notice to Igbo would lead to crisis in the region.

The Northern elder statesman gave the warning while speaking with Saturday PUNCH on Friday.

According to him, the Federal Government demonstrated irresponsibility in its selective handling of the threats from the southern and northern regions of the country.

His words: “The threat to arrest the youth, in my opinion, is not only counter – productive but also inappropriate.

“This is because ideally, with the position of things, every Nigerian has the right to live and conduct their businesses in any part of the country.

“But the Federal Government left their toes behind when they allowed the IPOB, which is being financed by the Igbo political and business elites both in the country and in the Diaspora to be issuing statements freely.

“Therefore, any attempt to arrest Arewa youths will lead to problems. I am resident in Kano State and the last time the Kaduna State Government brought up the issue of arrest, there would have been violence if an attempt to arrest anybody by the police had been made.”

Speaking in the same vein, the Chairman of Northern Elders Council, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, blamed the Federal Government for not tackling the threats by the IPOB on time, pointing that it led to the present crisis.

He said, “I believe that the Federal Government was somewhat late in addressing the threats issued by the Igbo.

“These threats by both the North and South are unconstitutional and illegal because every Nigerian has the right to live and work in any part of the country he or she chooses.

“I think the Igbo should not allow a man, who was not even born during the civil war to incite violence in the country. Both the Hausa and the Igbo are well travelled traders and if this country splits today, that opportunity is gone, a market of 180 million people. All the regions will suffer for it.”
