Pastor Adefarasin’s Church, ‘House On The Rock’ Engulfed In Flames (Watch Video)

Featured Image

A section of the Abuja branch of the “House on the Rock” Church in the Federal Capital Territory was gutted by fire earlier today.

It is understood that a building in the church, which was founded by Pastor Paul Adefarasin, was visibly ablaze while fire fighters were struggling to put out the flames.

Although the flames have now been put out, the extent of the damage incurred by the flames is not known.

This is even as the cause of the fire could not be ascertained.

The incident was also confirmed to pressmen by the pastor of the church, Edbert Abebe, and the commandant of the FCT Command of the fire service, Aderemi Olusola.

They also noted that there were no casualties and that investigation would commence immediately to ascertain the cause of the fire.

“There was nobody in the building, we are not actually meeting in this section of the building; we are meeting in some other section. We will have to carry out investigations to find out what exactly caused the fire but we can’t speculate,” Pastor Abebe said.

Speaking to NAN, a member of the Church said that the main building had not been in use for a while now as renovation work was going on.

Also lending voice on the incident, a twitter user Abayomi Shogunle said that there were 7 fire-fighter trucks at the church premises trying to put out the fire.

Shogunle further supported his claim with a video of the burning church on Twitter.

House on the Rock was founded in December 1994 by Pastor Paul A. Adefarasin in Lagos, Nigeria.

The ministry was established to be a vanguard 21st century Church with a vision of empowering believers for the fulfilment of their God-ordained destinies.

Since its’ inception the Church has grown far beyond the borders of Lagos, with over 40 daughter Churches and missions in Nigeria and across the globe.

Is Osinbajo Right That “Nigeria Is Indissoluble”?

Is Osinbajo Right that “Nigeria Is Indissoluble”?, By Jibrin Ibrahim

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

The acting president, Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday, stated categorically that: “Nigeria is indissoluble,” while addressing State sovernors in Abuja. Over the past few weeks, he had been addressing traditional, ethnic, religious and political leaders in a spirited effort to reduce divisive tensions in the country.

This article was written by Jibrin Ibrahim. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Recent tensions exploded following the so-called Kaduna Declaration in which a Northern youth coalition asked all Igbos living in Northern Nigeria to leave the region. The Northern group was responding to repeated calls by certain Igbo groups for secession. Other groups have also joined the fray, condemning and threatening others, and creating a climate of the apparent process of dismantling the country.

It is in this context that the acting president has been engaging leaders and appropriately counselling that: “We must not allow careless use of words to degenerate into crisis.” I completely agree with his key message that: “Nigeria’s unity should not be taken for granted” and that we should all beware that reckless words and actions can push us along the path leading to more bloodshed or even to war.

At this time, it is important that our leaders, and indeed all of us, come out and condemn hate speech, divisiveness, and above all the politics of brinkmanship. The fact of the matter is that there is no country in the world that does not face the risk of break-up and decomposition. Anthropologists tell us that the Somali are the most pure “tribe” in the world, all of whom are descendants of one line, and yet it is one of the most divided nations in the world today. What we know from history is that nations survive not because they are composed of the same group but because they create conditions that favour staying together.

Nigeria is confronting a number of critical political challenges that are raising serious questions about its identity and survival as a democratic federal republic. First, there has been a significant rise and expansion of sectarian conflicts, both ethnic and religious. The sustained crisis provoked by the Boko Haram insurgency has also been particularly unsettling for the country. The phenomenon of rural banditry related to cattle rustling and violent conflicts between pastoralists and farmers have virtually ended the “Pax Nigeria” established by the British between 1903 and 1915 in rural Nigeria. Increasingly, people are feeling threatened about killings in their homelands.

As rural peace recedes, the federal character politics in the country has been used to discriminate against millions of citizens labelled as settlers in most parts of the country. Violence has repeatedly been the outcome of conflicts between “settlers” and “indigenes” in various parts of the country. As more Nigerians live in areas where they are not considered indigenes, the feeling of exclusion is spreading. Following the 2015 general election, the insurgency in the oil producing Niger Delta has returned and sabotage of oil facilities has escalated. The revival of Biafran secessionism also took its élan within the context of all these political challenges.

Nonetheless, we should not panic too much about current political developments. Nigeria was amalgamated into a single political community in 1914 for economic, not political, reasons. That act of 1914 had limited objectives – the amalgamation of administration and finance to enable the system balance the books. In 1939, regional autonomy was reinforced with the division of the country into three regions. Since then, Nigerian politics has had a very strong ethno-regional character and the political elites have always sought to exploit it for their political ends. At every point when the political classes felt their interests were at stake, they have not hesitated to play the trump card of secession.

It should be recalled that in the 1950s, virtually all Nigerian parties saw themselves as political expressions of ethno-regional associations with the Action Group (AG) in the West evolving from a Yoruba cultural association – Egbe Omo Oduduwa, the Northern Peoples’ Congress (NPC) emerging from the northern cultural association, Jamiyar Mutanen Arewa and the National Congress of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC) which started as a national party but later narrowed its social base to a cultural association – the Igbo State Union.

These ethno-regional elite blocs struggled against each other in seeking to configure federalism to their advantage, often using the secession threat. It was the Sardauna of Sokoto who first referred to the amalgamation of the Nigerian provinces as “the mistake of 1914”.

That was in the early 1950s, when he flagged the secession banner, because he felt that Southern politicians were unwilling to understand the attitudes of the Northern elite towards independence. The Sardauna’s position was that the Northern elite would not rush towards independence if it meant replacing European domination with Southern domination.

In the 1950 Ibadan Constitutional Conference to review the Richards Constitution, a representational ratio of 45:33:33 for the North, West and East was proposed. Northern politicians felt threatened by this arrangement and the then Emir of Zaria articulated their position clearly – the North must have 50 percent of the seats or secede from the country. In May 1953, after Northern politicians had been ridiculed in Lagos for opposing the AG motion for self-government in 1956, the Northern House of Assembly and the Northern House of Chiefs met and passed an eight-point resolution that amounted to a call for confederation and separation.

In the 1954 Lagos Constitutional Conference, it was the turn of the AG to demand that a secession clause be inserted in the Constitution. The move was opposed by the NPC and NCNC. In 1964, following the census and election crises, Southern politicians were getting disenchanted with their future in Nigeria. Michael Okpara, the premier of the Eastern Region directly threatened in December 1964 that the East would secede. Okpara went ahead to establish a committee under his Attorney General to work out the modalities for a declaration of secession by Eastern Nigeria. When Ojukwu finally decided to embark on the course of secession three years later, he had a ready-made plan waiting for him.The transition from threats to an actual attempt at secession first emerged from the Niger Delta.

On February 23, 1966, Isaac Boro decided that he was not ready to live in a Nigeria that was ruled by Igbos. He therefore declared the Independence of the Niger Delta Peoples’ Republic following the first coup and the establishment of the Ironsi regime. Boro had become very disturbed about perceived Igbo domination of Eastern minorities since his days as a student activist at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His Republic lasted for only twelve days, the time it took the police to round up his rag-tag army of 159 volunteers. Isaac Boro and two of his colleagues were charged for treason in March and condemned to death in June 1966. Boro was eventually released at the onset of the Nigerian civil war, when he joined the federal side and was killed in battle in 1968, fighting for the liberation of Rivers State from Biafra, on the platform of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The civil war of 1967 to 1970 was, of course, the most serious threat to the existence of Nigeria as a country and it led to the loss of over a million lives. In my view, the present problems confronting the polity are to some extent less intense than the crisis engendered by the census, elections and coup d’états of the 1960s.

The second most intense period of political crisis followed the annulation of the June 12th, 1993 elections and the determination of the Abacha dictatorship to continue in power as the sole candidate for the five “leprous” political parties. To address the concerns, General Abacha had announced in his 1995 independence address the introduction of a modified presidential system in which six key executive and legislative offices will be zoned and rotated between six identifiable geographical groupings; North-West, North-East, Middle-Belt, South-West, East-Central and Southern-Minority. Abacha died and the transition led to the emergence of the Fourth Republic.

The reality of Nigerian politics is that fears of domination of one zone over the others played a central role in convincing politicians of the necessity of a federal solution. The First Republic, which operated essentially as an equilibrium of regional tyrannies, was however characterised by the domination of each region by a majority ethnic group and the repression of regional minorities. Indeed, the central problem that has been generating the steady rise of ethno-regional tensions and conflicts has been the supplanting of Nigeria’s federal tradition by a virtual Jacobin unitary state that emerged under a long period of military rule. Its for this reason that I believe we should continue the tradition of the search for restructuring. Following that path might reveal a surprising outcome – that we have actually been restructuring since 1914 and that process rather than structure might be our problem.

Featured Image

Xabi Alonso has wished his former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Spain teammate, Alvaro Arbeloa well after he announced he would be retiring.

The 34-year-old made over 200 appearances for both Madrid and Liverpool, before playing one year for West Ham.

Arbeloa’s decision to retire has been met with wild praise from former teammates and also Jose Mourinho.

“He arrived at Liverpool silently, away from the noise of the leading role,” Alonso said.

“He won the shirt through his fight and loyalty. We all remember his match [against Barcelona] in the Nou Camp in the Champions League in 2007.

“That day he became the player that all coaches want to have.

“Since our years in Liverpool and later in Madrid, we became inseparable, because Alvaro offers you his unconditional friendship.

“He never cared what they say, but he has always been faithful to his convictions. He has never hesitated to defend what he believes and that is why I admire him so much.

“Now a new stage is opening in his life, but with his head.

“For all these things I will always love you on my team. Both professionally as in life.”

Lampard: Chelsea’s Best Signing Is Conte’s Renewal

Featured Image

Chelsea legend, Frank Lampard says a renewal signed by Antonio Conte, will be the blues best signing.

Chelsea have been linked with Romelu Lukaku, Bakayoko and Juventus wingback Alex Sandro.

However, Chelsea are pushing to get Conte sign a renewal beyond 2019, after winning the EPL title.

“Antonio would be their most important signing – for me he was their man of the season,” Lampard said in quotes reported by The Sun.

“He took the club from 11th to comfortable champions and that can’t be underestimated.

“I think he’s a huge signing for them. You talk about player of the year, I’m all for giving the players credit but because it was such a dramatic uplift from the year before I think you have to give him huge credit.

“You saw the system change and how he made them play in that formation, it worked well.

“I think he’s a huge signing for them. I have no doubts, I don’t know, but I’m pretty confident he’ll be there and they’ll bring in players to play in the system he wants to play.”

Federal Government Declares Nigeria Free Of Meningitis

Featured Image

The Federal Government has declared Nigeria free from the latest ‘Type C’ deadly Cero Spinal Meningitis (CSM).

The declaration comes after the CSM claimed almost 2,000 lives in the country since its outbreak in late 2016.

READ MORE: What You Should Know About Meningitis

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, said with the decline in Meningitis cases, the 2016/2017 Meningitis outbreak was over and the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) responding to the epidemic has been stepped down.

Reactions Trail Gov Yari’s Claim That “God Sent Meningitis To Punish Nigerians For Their Sins”

He further added that the outbreak has been in constant decline for eight weeks and the affected States have recorded much fewer new cases.

In the last four weeks, he said, “no Local Government Area has reached outbreak alert threshold. By the 16th of June 2017 when the EOC was stepped down, a total of 14,518 suspected cases of meningitis were reported from 25 states, with 1,166 deaths, giving a case fatality rate of 8%.”

Ihekweazu explained that NCDC, the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) and partner organisations worked assiduously to reduce the impact of the outbreak on affected communities.

According to him, the NCDC established a National EOC, which coordinated the national outbreak response.

Death Toll In Nigeria’s Meningitis Outbreak Hits 1,069

This, he said, included the deployment of Rapid Response Teams (RRT) to the most affected States to strengthen surveillance, case management, laboratory capacity and risk communication.

Ihekweazu said: “The planning process to prevent future outbreaks and ensuring better preparedness for the next epidemic season has begun. Laboratory capacity has been improved with the recent operationalisation of the new National Reference Laboratory in Gaduwa, Abuja with support from the Federal Ministry of Health, the US CDC and the World Health Organisation.

“NCDC is also coordinating a network of laboratories across the country to improve case confirmation capacity. National guidelines towards responding to future outbreaks are being developed together with ongoing continuous awareness campaigns, keeping the general public informed. Workshops to improve preparedness are also being organised.”

The NCDC boss  stated that the reactive vaccination campaigns led by the NPHCDA were successfully conducted in Zamfara, Sokoto, Yobe and Katsina States. The state governments were fully engaged in conducting these campaigns to ensure that the vaccines reached the most at-risk population.

He said: “While NCDC has stepped down the Emergency response, the work never stops – we will continue to work 24/7 to ensure the protection of all Nigerians against infectious disease threats. We recognise our leadership, the Honorable Ministers of Health and the leadership of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency for the joint support during the outbreak.

“We are very grateful to the Government of Zamfara and Sokoto States for their excellent leadership during the outbreak. We also thank our partners including the World Health Organisation, Africa Centre for Disease Control, as well as the US Centers for Disease Control and its implementing partners –

African Field Epidemiology Network and the University of Maryland Baltimore – for their generous support in the implementation of outbreak response activities.”

Arsenal Warned Over Alexandre Lacazette Transfer Valuation

Featured Image

Lyon‘s president says he is willing to keep Alexandre Lacazette this summer unless Arsenal match his £44m valuation.

The Gunners are in talks over a deal for Lacazette, but Jean-Michel Aulas has warned Atletico Madrid could resurrect the deal for the striker which was thwarted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to uphold the Spanish club’s transfer plans.

“I do not intend to cede Alexandre quickly, because there is always the will of Atletico Madrid to bring it to January 1,” Aulas told L’Equipe. “Now I also listen to what Alexandre says.

“It’s premature to say that things will happen. We are talking about €50m to €60m (£44m-£53m), Arsenal are ready to pay for Lacazette. It will have to be at least that.

“Everyone knows that Atletico’s offer is €53m plus €12m bonus. That’s €65m (£57m). As the leaders of Arsenal are well informed, they will be in those waters.

“But frankly I have not thought about Arsenal for the moment. I thought Alexandre would stay because of the failure, initially, with Atletico Madrid.”

Alvaro Arbeloa Speaks About Why He Decided To Retire From Football

Featured Image

Alvaro Arbeloa has revealed that he decided to retire from professional football because he did not have the motivation to continue his career in either China or the United States.

It has been claimed that a number of Asian teams were interested in the former Spain international this summer, but Arbeloa has admitted that he was not prepared to simply play for money at this stage of his life.

“Many people have encouraged me to continue, saying that I have the physique to continue playing, but it has been more of a mental issue,” Arbeloa told Marca. “For me, football has been about fighting day by day, competing. Going to training in order to give your all, going in on your day off.

“The option to continue playing in China or the United States doesn’t interest me. The time has come to say enough because what is being presented to me now is not what I like about football.

“I always thought that I would continue playing until my legs held out, but in the end it was a head and motivational issue. Things this season did not pan out as I had dreamed and I am being honest with myself when I say goodbye.

“When I ask myself what I’m going to do, I understand that I do not want to continue playing for money, I do not want to take my family away again, so I had nothing that motivated me.”

Neymar Wants Lucas Lima At Barcelona

Featured Image

Neymar wants Barcelona to sign his compatriot Lucas Lima from Santos, reports Marca.

The midfielder has been linked with a January switch to the Nou Camp and the striker talked about the prospect of linking up with his friend in a recent interview.

“I’ve been trying to help and do what I can so that he can join us,” Neymar said. “He’s a player who I have a great admiration for – I like him a lot and he’s also a good friend.

“I hope it all goes through without problems. If he joins Barcelona he will be welcomed with open arms. I am sure he will bring a lot of joy to the team if he ends up with us.”

Lima’s team-mate Henrique claimed earlier this week: “”We are happy for him, because of the player that he is.

“He’s a player whose quality is not up for debate – a Brazil international. He’s helped Santos a lot.

“He is going to be super happy at the team he goes to.

“We are going to miss him, but life goes on. We wish him a lot of luck in Barcelona.”

Barcelona Interested In Signing Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez

Featured Image

Barcelona are keen to sign Atletico Madrid playmaker Saul Niguez if they fail to land Marco Verratti from Paris Saint Germain, according to AS.

The piece noted that Barca have been keeping an eye on the development of Saul, and the club will send someone to run the rule over him during Spain’s clash with Italy in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship this week.

Barcelona “feel the midfielder has the ideal profile to reinforce their side in the middle of the park, and so are reactivating the interest they’ve had in the player for the past two years.”

At Atletico, Saul has established himself as one of the most effective midfield players in Spanish football. On the ball, he’s excellent, off it, he’s tenacious, and the 22-year-old is intelligent enough to flourish in a variety of different positions.

Sven Goran Eriksson Wants Wayne Rooney In China

Featured Image

Former England coach Sven Goran Eriksson has opened up on life in China, and has insisted that Wayne Rooney “would have a positive experience” if he decided to move to the Chinese Super League this summer.

Wayne Rooney, 31, is widely expected to leave Manchester United ahead of the 2017-18 season after struggling for first-team football last term.

Rooney has been urged to move to the United States to continue his career by former England teammate Frank Lampard, but Rooney’s former international boss has now talked-up the potential of the Chinese Super League.

Eriksson has spent the last four years in Chinese football with Shanghai SIPG and Guangzhou R&F, although he recently left League One side Shenzhen FC after just six months at the helm.

“I hear a lot that China is not a good place to live for foreign people but that could not be further from the truth. I never had a problem. Of course it is not the same as Europe and the culture is very different. But if you live in Shanghai, it is like living in London,” Eriksson told reporters.

“If you want to eat Italian, Japanese or Spanish food then there are a lot of restaurants like that and you have everything you need. You don’t feel cut off at all, I certainly didn’t and none of the foreign players I had with me felt that way either. I lived in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Shenzhen and they were fantastic cities. I don’t think any foreigner had difficulties with the Chinese way of living in the big cities while I was there.

“I haven’t spoken to Rooney for a long time, so I don’t know what he is thinking, but if he went to China I think he would have a positive experience. He has a young family but there are international schools in the big cities and I know for sure he would have every help possible to make him settle. He would be made very welcome.

“The only problem you have is the language. But if you live in Shanghai or Beijing you have a lot of foreign people, so it is less of an issue. I bumped into many Swedish people in Shanghai and many Europeans live there, working for big companies. And, don’t forget, the players get treated well.”

Jose Mourinho Plans To Keep Phil Jones At Manchester United

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho will reportedly keep Phil Jones this summer, despite suggestions that the England international was heading for the Old Trafford exit ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.

Phil Jones, 25, joined Man United from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2011, and the versatile defender has made 168 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, landing one Premier League, one FA Cup and one Europa League in the process.

It had been claimed that the arrival of Victor Lindelof from Benfica would see Jones leave Old Trafford, but according to The Sun, Mourinho views the former Blackburn defender as a potentially key part of this squad for next season.

The same report, however, claims that Mourinho will consider offers for Chris Smalling this summer after deciding that he only needs one of the two English centre-backs for the 2017-18 campaign.

Injuries restricted Jones to just 18 Premier League starts last term, although he formed an impressive centre-back partnership with Marcos Rojo in the middle part of the season.

West Ham Considering Bid For Arsenal’s Theo Walcott

Featured Image

West Ham United are considering making a bid for  Arsenal forward Theo Walcott this summer as a report claims he is frustrated at the Emirates.

Theo Walcott has hardly featured for the Gunners since Arsene Wenger switched to a 3-5-2 system during the latter stages of last season, and the Mirror reports that he could now seek a fresh challenge as he looks to get back into the England squad for next summer’s World Cup.

He harbours dreams of making the England squad for the World Cup next summer, and knows that will be an impossible dream if he is a regular substitute at Arsenal.

He is not the only Gunners forward being talking about as a potential big-money West Ham target this summer, with  Olivier Giroud  also on the Irons’ radar, and they were prepared to offer him a contract worth £100,000 a week.

Meanwhile, Manuel Lanzini is set for a bumper new contract that would bring him in line with West Ham’s top earners.

Frank Lampard Comments On Diego Costa’s Chelsea Situation

Featured Image

Frank Lampard admits Chelsea will face a tough task attempting to replace Diego Costa if the striker leaves the club this summer.

“He’s a fantastic striker and we all saw that last season and since he’s been at Chelsea. He would be very difficult to replace, there’s no doubt about it,” Chelsea’s record scorer told Sky Sports News HQ.

“I don’t know where Diego Costa’s mind is, whether he wants to leave or not, that’s all speculation. One thing that is for sure, is that you’ve got a great striker in him.

“So, if he stays, brilliant, if he doesn’t, then you’ll have to go to the top end of the world’s strikers to replace him.

“He’s an all-round physical presence that also has the quality to get goals, that’s not easy to find in the modern day.”

Jose Mourinho Wants £100m Harry Kane Instead Of Cristiano Ronaldo

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho wants his Manchester United bosses to ignore Cristiano Ronaldo and get £100m Tottenham star Harry Kane, reports the Sunday Mirror.

Mourinho is understood to favour a move for Harry Kane rather than bringing Ronaldo back to Old Trafford eight years after he left for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo vowed to quit Spain after being accused of tax evasion but now it appears he could be staying at the Bernabeu.

And, as a result, Mourinho has reportedly instructed the United hierarchy to use the money assigned for Ronaldo to lure Kane to Old Trafford.

For the second successive season, Kane finished up with the Premier League’s Golden Boot but a move for the 23-year-old would be problematic for United.

The striker only signed a new contract in December which keeps him at Spurs until 2022, and the club could therefore command a fee in excess of £100 million.
