Traore Joins Lyon For €10 Million

Featured Image

Chelsea striker Bertrand Traore has a signed a five-year deal with ligue 1 side, Lyon, completing a €10 million move.

The striker spent last season on loan at Ajax and helped them to the Europa League final, but has now been offloaded after falling way below the pecking order.

Traore scored 13 goals in 35 appearances for the eredivisie club and will now take that to Lyon.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas and head coach Bruno Gensio announced Traore’s arrival at the club, with the manager praising his ability to play in multiple areas of the pitch.

“He has a great versatility for us, he is able to play on one side or in the middle, can take up spaces and bring something to the game that is different from what we are used to doing,” Genesio said.

“He was one of the players we wanted to see at Olympique Lyonnais.”

Crystal Palace Name De Boer As New Manager

Featured Image

Crystal Palace have appointed former Inter Milan manager, Frank De Boer as their new manager.

The Dutch manager replaces Sam Allardyce, who left the club at the end of the season.

De Boer has been looking for job ever since he left Inter in November, after an 85-day spell.

“I am thrilled to be appointed as manager of Crystal Palace Football Club,” de Boer said in a statement. “It is a great honour to take charge of such an historic club, a club that is known around the world for its hugely proud and passionate fan base.

“This role is a hugely exciting opportunity for me, and I cannot wait to get started in the Premier League with the players and staff here in south London.”

Speaking alongside chairman Steve Parish at a press conference, de Boer added: “The club can still grow further and further, because every year English clubs spend a lot of money, so it is possible to do something well.

“There is a lot of prospect to be a solid Premier League club. I have to see the players first, but I have my ideas, maybe one or two signings.

“We want to be a solid Premier League club, not a team which struggles for relegation, this is the target. If we can do more, then that is nice, but first is to be a very solid Premier League club.”

Ranieri Wants To Forget Leicester And Focus On Nantes

Featured Image

Claudio Ranieri, who was recently appointed Nantes coach, is hoping to forget Leicester.

The Italian was fired less than a year after helping Leicester to the EPL title and his first job after that is with Nantes.

Ranieri helped Monaco to promotion to the Ligue 1, in his first spell at France and he is back in France with Nantes.

“It was a fantastic experience,” Ranieri told reporters at his presentation on Monday. “The love that the people of Leicester gave me at my departure was even more incredible than at the time of the title.

“Now I want to forget Leicester. It was something unique. But I arrive at a club that has won eight titles in France, a historic club with very beautiful facilities, so I am honoured.

“I am very happy to be here. I have already come here with Monaco. I remember the club in Ligue 2, the fans were fantastic.”

“I’ve watched a lot of the matches, I’m not going to say the names but there is quality, I saw when the team won but also when it lost,” Ranieri added. “But I want to see the players who are suffering for the club.

“Union is very important for me and every coach plays the football he knows. Conceicao had a very compact organisation with very fast counter-attacks. My philosophy is not really different. He played in Italy, I’m Italian – it’s the same.”

Ranieri continued: “My motivation is always strong, that’s why I continue to be a coach. I have to prove every day to myself. I’ve made a career, but I still have to prove myself to Nantes. My passion and my love for football, for the players, to work well, are very strong.

“I am very nervous when I am at home with my wife, I prefer to be here. My wife says I will be happy. I am, I missed it a lot.

“I’m not going to say that we’re going to win this or that, we have to work a lot to achieve good things. France is a nation of wine. You have to work every day, but there are years when it is very good and others where it is not good. I hope the fans will be behind us.”

Nigerian Customs Generates N239.4bn In First Quarter Of 2017

Featured Image

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has generated a total sum of N239.4bn in the first three months of this year.

This is based on figures obtained from the Federal Ministry of Finance and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja.

The amount, which is contained in a document, it was learnt, showed the activities of the ministry of finance in the last two years.

In the document, the NCS stated that its revenue performance for the first quarter of this year exceeded its target of N193.2bn.

This, the service added, was achieved through a reform programme aimed at restructuring the agency, re-orientation of its officers, removing defects and adopting simplified procedures in its activities.

“The NCS collected N904.07bn in 2015 against a target of N944.4bn; the total collection in 2016 was N898.67bn against the target amount of N973.3bn.

“Between January and March 2017,the NCS was able to generate N239.4b, thereby exceeding the target of N193.22bn set for the period,” it said.

The service also said it had complied with a Presidential directive to deliver all seized perishable goods to the Internally Displaced Persons affected by the insurgency in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Benin camps.

It said the reforms embarked upon by the government has started yielding results as there is a strict compliance with rules governing the operations of the NCS, adding that a standard operational procedure has been developed to ensure transparency and accountability.

The service also said it has strengthened international engagements with the World Customs Organisation and the World Trade Organisation for trade facilitation and optimum revenue collection.

It added that a compliance team has been set up to ensure conformity with trade regulations adding that this would help to block all illegal routes for smuggling.

Karembau: Ronaldo Won’t Leave Madrid

Featured Image

Christian Karembau believes Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo will not leave the club, despite talks that he wants to leave.

The Portuguese star was accused of tax evasion by Spanish tax authorities, and reportedly wants to leave Madrid.

However, Ronaldo has not commented on the issue and Karembau believes he won’t leave Santiago Bernabeu.

“We need to be realistic. He has a contract and with any contact there are rules and laws. His release clause is €1 billion and no club will be able to pay that. I think Cristiano will stay and they will find a solution. We will see what happens, but I think he will stay.”

“He broke all the records,” the former France international said. “He belongs to Real Madrid and I think he knows that. He has achieved many, many goals with Real Madrid.

“He is a worldwide brand, just like Real Madrid, so I think he is in the best place and I think he will end up staying.”

Karembeu, a World Cup winner and European champion with France, spent three seasons at Real and won the Champions League on two occasions – in 1998 and 2000. The 46-year-old is now an ambassador for La Liga.

Latest EPL Transfer News For The 2017/18 Season

Featured Image

This summer transfer window is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in history and the amount spent by clubs is expected to break the record.

If the rumors are true in Spain we could see the shock return to Old Trafford for Cristiano Ronaldo. If that were to happen it would completely change the outlook of today’s football tips and greatly increase the Red Devils chances of winning the EPL. The Premier League has gone too long without the world’s best player and it would surely break all records were it to come true.

Premier League champions manager, Antonio Conte has gotten frustrated with his team’s lack of signings. That could all change this week though as according to reports they are close to wrapping up their first summer transfer deals. It has been reported in Italy that the Blues are close to finalizing a double transfer deal with Alex Sandro and Tiemoue Bakayoko close to joining the club. If they are able to wrap up the deals quickly they will be in a great place again next season to keep the title.

Liverpool has managed to sign a couple players already in the transfer window, 19-year-old under 20s England forward Dominic Solanke has joined on a free from Chelsea and is a great prospect for the future and Mohamed Salah who joined from Roma for £35 million. Salah would be a great addition to the squad and will certainly help the team improve when missing star man Coutinho. He failed to make the grade when playing for Chelsea so he will be even more determined to prove his critics wrong and show that he can play at the highest level.

It looks like Manchester United will break all the transfer records set this summer if they manage to seal a deal for Ronaldo though the spending will not stop there. One player Mourinho may have to replace is David De Gea as he continues to be linked with Real Madrid and may even end up being part of the deal to bring Ronaldo back to Old Trafford. To replace the goalkeeper it is believed that the manager wants to bring in 18-year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma who plays for AC Milan.

Leicester City are looking to recover from a shaky campaign last time out and the player they are looking to sign to help make them more secure is Johnny Evans from West Brom. The former Man U player is keen on the move and if fees can be agreed it is likely that this will take place.

Spurs are in the market for yet another striker to act as cover for Harry Kane. The manager wants a player with EPL experience and it is believed that Joshua King is their main target. The 25-year-old currently plays for Bournemouth and it is hoped that he could be the man to help Tottenham win their first title in over 50 years. They will be in most punters football betting tips but a lot will depend on if they cope with the pressure of playing their home matches at Wembley next season.

Nigeria Loses N131.8bn As Oil Production Drops Again

Featured Image

An analysis of various reports from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has shown that the total volume of crude oil produced in Nigeria has been reducing since January this year, leading to a cumulative loss of about N131.8bn.

Following an increase of 1.84 million barrels per day in January this year, from 1.58mb/d that was recorded in December 2016, the country’s crude production commenced a descent and closed at 1.82mb/d and 1.59mb/d in February and March 2017, respectively, The Punch reports.

Nigeria’s Oil Sector Gets Major Boost As Shell Resumes Crude Exports

According to figures in four financial and operations monthly reports of the NNPC from January to April 2017, Nigeria’s total volume of crude and condensate lifting and utilisation dropped by 3.55 million barrels between January and March this year.

It is also understood that the apex oil firm placed the value of this drop at $431m or N131.8bn, using the official exchange rate of N305.85 to a dollar.

The NNPC stated that in January 2017, crude oil production in Nigeria increased to 1.84mb/d, which was 16.51 per cent increase relative to the December 2016 production, although it lagged behind the January 2016 performance by 14.52 per cent.

This increase was not sustained, as confirmed in the NNPC’s March 2017 report, which read in part, “In February 2017, crude oil production in Nigeria decreased to 1.82mb/d, which represents 1.05 per cent decrease relative to the January 2017 production and lagged behind the February 2016 performance by 10.97 per cent.”

Nigeria On The Verge To Unseat Angola As Africa’s Largest Oil Exporter

In its latest report for April, which was released last week in Abuja, the national oil firm said, “In March 2017, crude oil production in Nigeria decreased to 1.6mb/d, which represents 12.04 per cent decrease relative to the February 2017 production and lagged behind the March 2016 performance by 18.32 per cent.”

The NNPC, however, insisted that the discussions between the Federal Government and militants in the Niger Delta had positively impacted on crude production, despite the successive decline in production within three months.

It said, “The continuous engagement of the Federal Government with the militants has continued to enhance production. Issues that still dragged production during the period include incessant deferred production due to leakages in Trans Niger Pipeline and Nembe Creek Trunk Line and leakages/low well head pressure at Qua-Iboe Terminal.”

Arturo Vidal Once Again Urges Alexis Sanchez To Quit Arsenal For Bayern Munich

Featured Image

Arturo Vidal has again urged Bayern Munich to sign his international team-mate Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal this summer.

“We’ll see if Alexis is coming. I do not know yet,” Vidal told German newspaper Bild.

“I know him very well. He is a spectacular player. And with him, we would surely improve.

“We already have a lot of top-level players. We are the best club in the world.”

His comments came after former Bayern Munich boss Ottmar Hitzfeld told the paper that buying Sanchez would make the Bundesliga champions “a better team.”

But Hitzfeld, who led Bayern to five Bundesliga titles and a Champions League crown, said the club needed to move quickly to secure a good deal for the Chile international.

“He is a player in the category that can make Bayern a better team,” he said.

“But it’s important to make decisions as quickly as possible, because the longer you wait the more expensive a player becomes.”

Bayern have made four signings so far this summer, adding midfielder Corentin Tolisso from Lyon, former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry from Werder Bremen and Niklas Sule and Sebastian Rudy from Hoffenheim.

Strike: ASUU Goes Tough On FG, Vows To Resist Hike In Tuition Fees In Nigerian Universities

Featured Image

The President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Biodun Ogunyemi, has vowed that the union will resist any attempt to increase tuition fees in the country’s public universities.

While speaking in an exclusive chat with Premium Times, the ASUU president also assured that the union will embark on an industrial action if the federal government fails to meet its demand on adequate funding of the institutions and payment of salaries.

He said: “We will not tolerate any attempt to increase tuition fee, we are against telling people to pay more, even the current fees, we are still fighting them, we as a body have always stood against fee increment and we will continue to stand against it.”

The statement by the union leader is coming on the back of reports of a possible increase in tuition fees in universities by the federal government.

Mr Ogunyemi also stated that the union has been engaging the federal government since November 2016 on issues rocking the university system.

“The truth is there are lots of issues rocking the system. We have made our position known to the federal government; we have also written to state governments who have refused to give subvention to their universities,” he said.

“Some of them cannot sustain one university and they go on to establish two or three, compounding the issues.

“We have given the government till June ending to attend to our needs, if the government does not call us by June ending we will convey a meeting to take our position.

“However, we are trying to engage the government but if they don’t invite us to a meeting before June ending, we will still take our position on whether we are going on strike or not.

“But that will not be like early July but middle or late July, that is if they don’t heed to our demands which includes payment of salaries, funding, research and lots more”.

When asked if ASUU would initiate a meeting with the federal government, he said “We will not initiate any meeting if they don’t call us, we can’t initiate meeting.”

Paulinho Might Not Be Allowed To Join Barcelona -Luiz Felipe Scolari

Featured Image

Luiz Felipe Scolari has played down speculation Paulinho will join Barcelona during the summer transfer window as finding a replacement for the former Tottenham Hotspur man would be too expensive.

Guangzhou Evergrande manager Luiz Felipe Scolari believes the midfielder’s proposed move to the Camp Nou is unlikely as new Chinese Super League transfer regulations make it too expensive to find a replacement.

“His release clause is €40m (£35.1m) and none of the Chinese clubs will let their key players go because it would be difficult and expensive to find a replacement due to the new rules,” the Brazilian coach told reporters.

Paulinho’s form has attracted the attention of Barca, but with new regulations in place governing the fees paid by Chinese clubs for foreign talent prompting them to halt their spending in the current transfer window, Scolari does not believe Guangzhou will be prepared to allow Paulinho to leave.

Bournemouth Confident About Signing £20m-rated Chelsea Defender Nathan Ake

Featured Image

Bournemouth are increasingly confident that they are close to agreeing a deal to sign Chelsea defender Nathan Ake.

Southampton and Leicester are also interested in signing the 22-year-old centre-back.

Nathan Ake, valued in the region of £20m, spent the first of last season on loan at Bournemouth before being recalled in January.

Eddie Howe later launched an £18m bid for the Dutch defender that month, which was instantly rejected.

But Bournemouth are now set to snap-up the ex-Watford ace with a £20m-plus offer after missing out on Chelsea legend John Terry.

He is expected to sign a deal with the South Coast club when he returns from his holiday in July.

A source said: “It should be done when the player gets back from his holiday next month.

“Others clubs have been taking a look at him, but Bournemouth look to be in pole position at present.”

Liverpool Missed Out On Signing Dani Alves In 2006 – Rick Parry

Featured Image

Former Liverpool CEO Rick Parry has claimed the club almost signed Dani Alves in 2006.

The Brazil full-back, who looks set to join Manchester City from Juventus this summer, was a target for the Reds under Rafael Benitez.

He told BBC Radio Merseyside: “We had the deal — finally, after enormous complications — tied up for Dani Alves and then the decision was should we buy two players or should we spend all of that on a full-back?

“Dani Alves was not the player then that he is now, but he always looked like he would be a great player.

“Would he have been a better signing than [Jermaine] Pennant and [Peter] Crouch, for example? Probably yes, but it’s easy with hindsight.”

Parry explained that because Liverpool did not have the same clout as a club like Chelsea in the transfer market they had been “trying to be smarter.”

He added: “Looking back, if I could do anything different, it would be to focus on buying one [player] at a time rather than having to buy five or six every season.”

FG Cautions MDAs Against Inflating Personnel Budgets Ahead Of 2018 Fiscal Period

Featured Image

The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a warning to the chief executive officers of all its Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) against inflating their personnel budgets for the 2018 fiscal period.

The caution is contained in the 2018 Personnel Budget Call circular issued and personally signed by the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udo Udoma.

The circular with reference BD/2000/EXP/S.651 was sent to the Chief of Staff to the President, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Vice President, all ministers, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, all service chiefs and the Inspector-General of Police.

Others are the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, all chairmen of commissions, all permanent secretaries/heads of extra-ministerial departments and the Auditor-General for the Federation.

The caution is aimed at checking cases of ghost workers as well as reducing the rising wage bill, which accounted for about N1.88tn or 63 per cent of the recurrent non-debt expenditure of N2.99tn in the 2017 budget.

Senator Udoma further said since the Federal Government had commenced the preparation of the 2018 budget, the circular was issued to provide special instructions to all the senior officials of government agencies charged with the responsibility of preparing and submitting their personnel budgets.

The circular read: “The payroll templates for all MDAs have been prepared using applicable salary structures as approved by the NSIWC.

“Therefore, you are required to complete the personnel template in line with extant rules and regulations. Only persons employed in the public service of the federation should be on the nominal roll.

“Staff due for retirement as of December 31, 2017 should not be included on the nominal roll. Please, check this carefully as violations will be treated as wilful introduction of ghost workers.

“A list of all members of staff due for retirement as of December 31, 2017 must be attached separately with your submission to the Budget Office of the Federation. The list will be cross-checked against the existing nominal roll with the BOF.”

The minister also told the head of agencies of government that they were to assign non-regular allowances only to employees who were clearly entitled under the terms of service.

He added:  “The MDAs are required to reflect appropriate grade level/step for all the workers, including provisions for annual increments.

“The MDAs are not required to provide for promotions of their workers taking effect from January 1, 2018 because such promotions cannot be predicted with certainty.

“Any new hire/recruitment included must be supported with all necessary approvals, including prior clearance by the BOF for the MDAs to recruit new employees. This is to ensure provision of adequate funds for their emoluments.”

He also said, “Consultants, contract workers and legionnaires should not be included on the nominal roll as they are not permanent and pensionable members of staff of the Federal Government.”

Eid-El-Fitr: Prominent Nigerians Berate Buhari For Issuing Audio Message In Hausa

Featured Image

Several prominent Nigerians have reacted to a voice message issued by the Presidency on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari, who on it, communicated to citizens for the first time since he left the country for the United Kingdom 50 days ago.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the voice message was released on Sunday to debunk reports that the President was suffering from speech impairment.

There have been reports in the social media claiming that the President is suffering from speech impairment and memory loss.

However, the audio clip, which is the President’s voice message to Nigerians on the occasion of the Eid-el-Fitr, was aired in Hausa language.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, had, in a statement on Saturday conveyed the message of the President to Nigerians.

In the one minute and three seconds speech which was also aired on BBC, Buhari had said:

“I am immensely grateful to God for his mercy in guiding us successfully to conclude another Ramadan. My greetings to all Nigerian Muslims and our brother Christians on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr:

“May the lessons of Ramadan, namely piety, self-denial, prayers and generosity to the poor and the needy, be with us for all time.

“I, again, appeal to all Nigerians to avoid reckless statements or actions against our fellow countrymen. We should all resolve to live in peace and unity in our great country, which is the envy of many less-endowed nations.”

However, several Nigerians have shared mixed feelings about the message from the president with some civil rights organisations and prominent individuals lashing at him for speaking to Nigerians in Hausa.

The Punch quoted a member of the House of Representatives during the Second Republic, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, as saying:

“Other than propaganda, I wonder what they (President’s handlers) intend to achieve by putting out such an audio clip (message) at this time. The President needs our prayers and we sincerely pray for his quick recovery and safe return.’’

Also, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, said  Buhari’s statement failed to address the issues of concern in the country, describing the audio message as flat.

Its spokesman, Yinka Odumakin, said he expected the President to have cautioned Arewa youths against their ultimatum to the Igbo, noting that instead, Buhari simply danced around the issue.

He said, “The statement is so flat; it did not address specific issues on the ground. In view of what is going on in the country now, I would have thought he would have appealed to those, who are issuing notices to quit against some other tribes, to desist from doing such a thing.

“He was talking about reckless speeches. What constitute reckless speeches? I think he should have been more specific in terms of what we are facing now because the country is under stress.”

“It’s like the Acting President (Yemi) Osinbajo addressing the nation in Yoruba because he is a Yoruba man.

“Addressing the nation at this time in Hausa does not bring inclusiveness. I don’t think it’s good enough for the President of a multi-ethnic nation to have made a national address in the language spoken by a section of the country.”

Also, a former Special Assistant on Social Media to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Reno Omokri, on his Facebook page, while reacting to it, drew comparison between Buhari and Nnamdi Kanu.

Omokri, while condemning the president for addressing Muslims in Hausa, said:

“In a country, whose official language is English, President Muhammadu Buhari broadcasts his Sallah message in Hausa! Would Trump (whose origin is German) address America in German? So what about all those Nigerians who can’t speak Hausa?

“Ideally, the President should have spoken in English first; then, if he feels like it, he may also speak in Hausa. The way he spoke only in Hausa makes it seem as if he is only concerned with those who gave him 97 per cent of the votes while those who gave him five per cent can take a hike!

“How would the rest of the country have felt if President Olusegun Obasanjo had released a Christmas broadcast to Nigerians in Yoruba or if President Goodluck Jonathan had done so in Ogbia?

“How can a national leader address Nigerians in a sectional language? Nigeria has never had a leader as divisive as Buhari! There is no difference between President Buhari and Nnamdi Kanu.

“President Buhari is the President of all Nigeria; he is not the President of only those who can speak Hausa! This is an outrage! (The late) President Umaru Yar’Adua also spoke to the BBC News by telephone. He is Fulani, like President Buhari; yet, he spoke in English because he was President of all of us!”

In its reaction, a civil society organisation, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, said the President’s use of Hausa in his salah message was discriminatory as more than half of the population would not understand him.

The CDHR President, Malachy Ugwumadu, stated:

“The lingua franca of Nigeria is not Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba or Ibibio, but English. Therefore, while we appreciate that the President is not in the best of health condition, it is far-fetched that he would communicate on this occasion in a language that is not understood by more than half of the population. That was not well advised.

“This is a heterogeneous society, where we have over 200 indigenous languages. I think the President should focus on what unites us rather than what divides us. If he mustered the energy to talk at all, he should talk in a way everyone would understand. It is not proper.’’

Also lending voice on the development, the umbrella group for the Igbo, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, declared that Nigeria had descended to the level of a ‘Banana Republic’, if the President could address Nigerians in Hausa.

This is even as the Ijaw Youth Council expressed surprise that Buhari, whom it noted Nigerians had been eager to hear from, spoke in Hausa in his sallah message.

IYC spokesman, Mr. Henry Iyalla, said, on Sunday, that it would be difficult for Nigerians to agree that the President was actually the person that spoke to Nigerians on the BCC.

But the Arewa Consultative Forum said Buhari’s Eid-el-Fitr message was a good development in view of recent happenings in the country.
