Between Nigerian Igbos And Biafran Agitators: A Northerner’s Perspective

Between Nigerian Igbos And Biafran Agitators: A Northerner’s Perspective, By Yushau A. Shuaib

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

The sweet memory of my youth service year in the Igboland of Asaba, Delta State, in the 90s, is what I have continued to relish whenever a discourse on tribalism, sectionalism and the likes are on the front burner in my beloved country, Nigeria. As non-indigenes, especially young Northerners, we were well-received, accommodated and accorded respect and dignity. In fact, we freely walked into the palace of the paramount ruler, the Asagba of Asaba, Professor Chike Edozien for support and guidance whenever the need arose.

This article was written by Yushau A. Shuaib. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

Since then, I have had a proper perspective and understanding of the Ndigbo, many of who I have as friends. In this tension-soaked period when various sectional groups are issuing reckless and unguarded threats, it is necessary to further distinguish between a peace-loving Nigerian Igbo from a secessionist Biafran agitator.

The Ndigbo, as I know them, are spread across every nook and cranny of Nigeria. The Igbo generally tends to speak the local dialect and respect the culture of his host community. He believes that every part of Nigeria is a home away from home and adopts it as a place of residence. Experience has shown that if one goes into any community and does not find an Igbo person there, its better to leave that place immediately. Any city without an Igbo person cannot be business-like. On the other hand, a Biafran agitator is not likely to have been exposed to other parts of Nigeria besides Igboland, or might have grown in the diaspora where he only learnt the distorted history of Nigeria through myopic and eccentric points of view. The agitator hates other Nigerians and possibly believes in violent confrontation as the means towards the actualisation of his dream of the Republic of Biafra.

Meanwhile, the successes of Igbo entrepreneurs are more visible outside the shores of Igboland, with their enormous investments in hospitality, housing estates, spare parts assemblage, the sales and manufacturing of automobiles, and industrial concerns, among others, in different regions of the country. However, the business enterprise of a Biafran agitator is usually restricted to ‘Biafra-land’, without a vision of expansion outside the South-Eastern region. The primary activity of an agitator is the constant incitement through hate speeches, the making of empty threats and arrogant posturing. This is not core of the Ndigbo that I know so well.

A true Igbo politician is a bridge builder, who establishes and sustains friendship across the Niger. The likes of the Uzor Kalus of Abia, Rochas Okorochas of Imo, Peter Obis of Anambra, among others, are clear examples of successful Igbo businessmen who have transcended the geographic boundaries of Nigeria in making wise investments in the productive sector, before venturing into politics to support Igboland.

Unfortunately, the Biafran agitator has completely lost touch with the reality of our existence. The secessionist has forgotten that the map of the South-Eastern region of the 60s has completely changed in the new millennium. The Biafran politician fantasises about annexing other resource-endowed territories by drawing in territory belonging to the Ijaw, Urhobo, Kalabari, Ibibio, Ikwere, Efik, Igala, Idoma and Edo into his illusionary map of a Biafran Republic. Some of these ethnic nationalities have, in recent times, come out to dissociate themselves from the so-called Biafra agitation and cartography.

The Nigerian Igbo believes in the oneness and indivisibility of the country; he speaks Nigeria, breathes Nigeria and will never leave Nigeria. An obvious example is the fact that Igbos in Kano populate the vast Sabon Gari District, whose population is more than those of most big cities in the South-East. Apart from occasional sectional skirmishes which may not necessarily be their fault, the Igbos in the North are well loved by Northern leaders, and are even protected by the Arewa youth.

The Igbos are allowed to acquire property and establish businesses in every Northern part of the country, but the Biafran sympathisers have continuously denied outsiders the ownership of land for business related activities in the South-East. This glaring discrimination currently creates the disparity of the inequality in business ownership, where an average Northerner can quickly relocate without losing a dime, while the sheer volume of investment of a South-Easterner can never be easily recouped or transferred even in decades.

It is necessary to point out that the modern day Biafran agitators hate Nigeria and Nigerians and keep describing the country as a zoo. The main agitator and supreme leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has not only publicly threatened to wage war against Nigeria in a bloody and violent confrontation but has also described any Christian that attends “a Church with a Yoruba Pastor as an idiot, imbecile and not fit to be a human being and worse than Boko Haram.”

In a series of his video and audio releases that are available online, Nnamdi Kanu engages in unfortunate intimidation and totally misguided statements. It is simply ridiculous! However, rather than condemning and bringing him to order, some respected Igbo leaders, who have built bridges across the length and breadth of this country, celebrate and even stand behind him despite his case of treason in the court.

While the rantings of Biafran agitators had gone on for a while without a reply, sadly it was the equally reckless declaration of the ultimatum issued by the so-called Arewa Youth as a counterbalancing response to the inciting statements, that reawakened the consciousness of Nigerians to the danger of hate campaigns.

While it may be justifiable to unleash a ferocious dog against a neighbour’s untamed mad dog, we should nevertheless tame the fury of the Arewa youth who might also be harbouring the exact mindset of Kanu and his IPOB.

As Nigerians, we should deploy common sense through dialogue to resolve the contentious issues of our nationhood. After all the hullabaloo and threats, I am so sure that no one is going anywhere. We should remain united and stop the dirty politics of ethnicity, widely played by sponsored and misguided youth. The ill-advised agitators from both parties must have read slanted history books, since they were not direct witnesses to the earlier gory history, the encore of which they are calling for.

Nigeria Approves Inclusion Of NYSC Corps Members In Health Scheme

Featured Image

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the inclusion of members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) across the country.

Speaking to State House correspondents after the council’s meeting presided over by the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said the approval was given in order to put a stop to unnecessary deaths being recorded among youth corps members across the country.

His words: “The other memorandum has to do with how we will prevent unnecessary death among youth corps members across the country.

“Council approved the memo that henceforth, we will include NYSC members in the National Health Insurance Scheme across the country.

“This will guarantee access to quality care across the country, prevent unnecessary deaths and also ensure our youth corps members receive the highest attainable level of care across the country.”

The development is coming on the back of the death of a corps member, Miss Ifedolapo Oladepo at the Kano State Orientation Camp last year while Ukeme Asuquo also died at the orientation camp in Zamfara State.

Adewole said the council also approved the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between his ministry and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities on the procurement and distribution of contraceptives commodities across the country.

“The Federal Government has the policy of free distribution of contraceptives commodities and services across the country.

“We have renewed the MoU today (Wednesday) to last for the next four years between 2017 and 2020. And that we also continue to provide effective safe voluntary contraceptives services across the country,” he said.

The minister also said the Federal Government has formally declared the Meningitis outbreak over in the country.

NANS To Resist Increase Of School Fees By Tertiary Institutions

Featured Image

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has today vowed to resist plans by some tertiary institutions to increase school fees.

A press statement signed by the National president of NANS, Comrade Chinonso Obasi reads

“NANS received the report that about 38 tertiary institutions have concluded plans to jack up tuition fees in their institutions with utter pain and disgust, because over the years Nigerian students have been made to bear the brunt of poverty ideas and administrative ineptitude of managers and chief executives of tertiary institutions.”

“In a saner climes, education funding include revenue from researches and consultative collaborations.”

“Implementation of UNESCO strategies, particularly commercializing research findings should occupy Nigeria educational institutions rather than constant hike in tuition fees payable by helpless students”

The statement added that NANS believed that the planned hike in tuition fees would be the last straw that would “break the cycle of obnoxious levy on learning and pursuit of education.”

“We regret to note that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration has not done much to justify the confidence of Nigerian students within the two years of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in power. This oversight becomes very painful despite the positive contributions of Nigerian students to the success of the administration’s key policies and programmes, such as, the fight against corruption, maintenance of peace and unity of the country, as well as campaign for local government autonomy.”

The statement further reads, “NANS feels that Nigerian students do not merit such harsh punishment as fee increases, which would further limit the capacity of the students to dream of a better future. Consequently the National President, Comrade Chinonso Obasi, in concert with the national executive of NANS wish to serve notice to the authorities concerned that Nigerian students will never endure any increase in tuition at this time of the nation’s socio-economic challenges.”

“If administrators of Nigeria’s educational institutions have run out of ideas of funding education in the country, they should feel free to liaise with students to explore new ways of funding, instead of the usual resort to internal revenue generation through increased tuition fees”, the statement stated.

“However, NANS wishes to reiterate the fact that Nigerian students have been patient with PMB administration and our patience has reached the elastic limit.

“President Buhari should recognize that it is time to reward the understanding and cooperation of Nigerian students with education subsidy, proper funding of education and adequate welfare initiatives for students and resisting the temptation to increase tuition fee.

“NANS wishes to inform Nigerians that any attempt by this administration to increase tuition fee in our tertiary institutions, will leave Nigerian students with no other option than passing a vote of no confidence on the APC led Federal Government.

“We therefore call on all well-meaning individuals and stakeholders of education to hasten and find lasting solutions to the deplorable attitude towards education in the country and put smiles on the faces of the most marginalized group of Nigerians, the students”, the statement stressed.

JUST IN: Ex-Governor Of Taraba State Danbaba Suntai Is Dead

Featured Image

A former Governor of Taraba state, Mr. Danbaba Suntai, who survived an air crash at the Yola Airport in 2012, is dead.

According to the News Agency of Nigerian (NAN), he died at home today, June 28, 2017.

Suntai’s death was announced by Mr. Emmanuel Bello, a former Commissioner for Information in the state, some hours ago.

It is understood that he died as a result of the brain injuries sustained from the plane accident.

The former governor, who flew the light plane, crashed in October 2012 and had not recovered fully since then.

He became governor of Taraba state in 2007 and was sworn again on May 29, 2011 for a second term.

A pharmacist by training, Suntai enrolled for training as a pilot at the Nigerian College of Aviation in Zaria in 2010 and was thus licensed.

Prior to his plane crash in 2012, Suntai had been flown to Germany for medication after returning from his annual leave in August 2009, following a sudden ailment that was suspected to have developed from food poisoning.

On his return from Germany, Suntai spoke at the opening of a three-day regional convention of the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International in Jalingo, where said his meal was actually poisoned.

He had had several successful flights with his private aircraft even while piloting the affairs of Taraba State as governor.

But his current travails started precisely on October 25, 2012, when a private plane he piloted crashed in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

After receiving the initial treatment at the Adamawa Standard German Hospital in Yola he was later transferred to the National Hospital Abuja on October 26, 2012. From there he was flown to Germany and was later taken to a rehabilitation centre in the United States for further medication.

After 10 months of medical sojourn overseas, Danbaba Danfulani Suntai finally returned to the country on August 23, 2013.

After weeks of political intrigues in the North-East state based on claims and counterclaims over his health status, it was revealed that the former Taraba State governor was not healthy enough to live in Nigeria without adequate treatment, or to govern a state.

He was subsequently flown abroad again for treatment, even as his then deputy, Garba Umar, was empowered by the Taraba State House of Assembly to fully take over the ship of the state in acting capacity.

He was brought back in the build-up to the 2015 elections and remained confined in Jalingo until after the change of guards on May 29, 2015.

Suntai was born June 30 1961 and attended the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he studied pharmacy.

Unitaid: Prominent Health Agency Set To Roll Out Latest AIDS Drug In Nigeria

Featured Image

Unitaid is to roll out a generic version of the latest AIDS drug that can improve and prolong the lives of tens of thousands of people who suffer severe side effects and resistance to other treatments in Nigeria.

Unitaid, a global health initiative, said a generic of Dolutegravir (DTG), first approved in the U.S. in 2013, is being given to 20,000 patients in Kenya before being rolled out in Nigeria and Uganda later in the year.

DTG is the drug of choice for people with HIV in high-income countries who have never taken antiretroviral therapy before and for those who have developed resistance to other treatment.

Kenya is the first African country to start using the DTG.

“I had constant nightmares and no appetite,” said Nairobi resident Doughtiest Ogutu, who started taking the drug this year because of her resistance to other treatments.

“My appetite has come back… My body is working well with it.”

Ogutu, who has been living with HIV for 15 years, said her viral load, the amount of HIV in her blood, has fallen tenfold from 450,000 to 40,000 since she started on DTG.

Sub-Saharan Africa has been at the epicenter of the HIV epidemic for decades and home to nearly three quarters of all people with HIV and AIDS.

UNAIDS aims for 90 per cent of people diagnosed with HIV to receive antiretroviral treatment by 2020.

The brand name version of DTG is Tivicay, produced by ViiV Healthcare, which is majority-owned by GlaxoSmithKline.

About 15 per cent of HIV patients are resistant, which means the medicines do not work on them, said Sylvia Ojoo, Kenya country director for the University of Maryland School of Medicine, who is monitoring the introduction of DTG.

UNITAID works to bring medicines to market quickly and to reduce manufacturing costs by allowing generic companies to access patents for a small royalty and produce them cheaply for the developing world.

Kenya, with one of the world’s largest HIV positive populations, has made great strides in addressing HIV in its public medical facilities.

“The health systems we have in place allow for rapid deployment,” said Ojoo.

“It makes it relatively easy to introduce new interventions.”

About 1.5 million Kenyans are HIV positive, with more than two-thirds on treatment, said Martin Sirengo, head of Kenya’s National AIDS and STI Control Program.

The number of new infections in Kenya has almost halved over the last decade to 80,000 a year, he said, thanks to increased testing, treatment and awareness.

Perez: Hard To Find A Place For Mbappe At Real Madrid

Featured Image

Florentino Perez believes it would be quite hard to find a place for Kylian Mbappe at Real Madrid.

The Monaco youngster attracted interest from top European clubs, after an impressive outing with the ligue 1 club.

Reports have it Real Madrid are willing to let one of their stars go to make room for Mbappe, but that will be hard.

“Mbappe is a very good player,” he told esRadio. “This situation reminds me of last year when they told us to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus.

“The summer is long. Zidane has been close to him for several years.

“Not many players play for Real Madrid at 18 years old. We must be patient. Zidane has him in mind.

“It’s not enough to say we can bring players in and then have them sitting on the bench. We are thinking about Mbappe, but his age makes it difficult to find a place.”

Perez: New Zidane Deal Is Important

Featured Image

Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez has stated the most important thing for Madrid now is to extend Zidane’s contract.

Perez had previously stated Zidane could stay at the club forever, after he won back-to-back UCL trophies.

And the re-elected president, Perez, would like to tie him down to a deal as soon as he resumes from break.

“Sure he is safe and the first thing we are going to do after he comes back from holiday is renew him,” Perez said to esRadio.

“No one knows the club and the dressing room better than him. It is an advantage that he has over the rest and that has made him succeed for 17 months.

“Many times he has said that he does not know if he will continue so that they [the press] do not ask him about the future of the players.

“But I would have continued with him even if we had not won.”

PENGASSAN: Nigerian Govt Cautioned Against Sale Of Refineries

Featured Image

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has warned the Federal Government against the full concession or plans to privatise the nation’s refineries.

There have been speculations that the federal government plans to sell or privatise some refineries in the country, especially the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries.

However, the Group Executive Chairman, NNPC Branch of PENGASSAN, Mr. Abdullahi Sale, while speaking on Tuesday, shortly after a tour of the Port Harcourt Refinery, said it would be wrong for any government to hand over its energy for privatisation.

He pointed out that government could decide to hold 20 per cent equity, adding that such action had to be gradual.

Sale further insisted that like security, the energy sector should not be fully privatised.

His words: “We are not averse to concessioning or privatisation of the refineries; however, what we are saying is that no nation would like to toy with its issue of energy.

“Our position is that we don’t want a situation where 100 per cent of our energy sector is given to private hands. We want to maintain some level of security. Because energy is security, just like we cannot hand over our security 100 per cent to private hands, we also should not totally privatise our energy.

“We are not supporting the sale of the refineries in totality, however, the PIGB being passed in the Senate has provided room for 20 per cent of government equity to be in the hands of the BPE. That means that eventually 20 per cent would go off.”

On the proposed operation of modular refineries in the country, Sale noted that such refineries would not be able to meet the 40 million litres per day demand of Nigerians.

He added: “Our national demand on a daily basis is within the range of 40 million litres, which modular refineries cannot provide. However, it will be able to provide us some level of sufficiency, but not up to what we desire.

“Modular refineries are quick ways to get products available to Nigerians, but in the real sense, they are not the final solutions because they are not going to take us to where we want to be.”

N16bn Apartment Belonging To “Wanted” Nigerian Oil Mogul, Kola Aluko To Be Auctioned In July

Featured Image

Nigerian oil mogul, Kola Aluko, who is declared wanted by the EFCC, has been identified as the owner of Apartment 79, a penthouse apartment in One57, one of New York City’s most expensive residential buildings.

However, the New York Post reports that the apartment would be sold to the highest bidder by a Luxembourg based Banque Havilland, in a foreclosure auction in July.

It is understood that Aluko is owing the European bank millions of dollars for a mortgage he took out to purchase the $50.9 million (N16 billion) luxury condo in New York.

Banque Havilland, based in Luxembourg, issued a $35.3 million loan to Mr. Aluko to purchase the 79th-floor penthouse at 157 East 57th Street in New York, but the oil tycoon has missed several payments, leading the bank to force a sale of the property next month.

It was gathered that the penthouse sale is seen as the most expensive foreclosure in New York City.

The bank has listed Mr. Aluko’s 213-foot yacht as collateral and will collect the mortgage payment it’s owed, which was due last fall, plus interest.

In addition to his mortgage payment, Mr. Aluko owes property taxes and maintenance fees.

The energy businessman, a friend of stars such as Jay Z and Jamie Foxx, has not been seen for a while, which has sparked rumours that he is hiding away on his yacht, which was last registered in the Bahamas in May.

Apartment 79 was sold to a Aluko in December 2014 for $50.9 million, making it the eighth most expensive unit in the building, according to New York City property records.

Less than a year later however, he took out a $35.5 million mortgage from Banque Havilland in Luxembourg to help pay for the apartment.

When Mr. Aluko failed to pay the loan back a year later, the bank took possession of the 6,420-square-foot apartment, according to court documents.

Now the bank is planning to auction off the four-bedroom apartment on July 19 to regain the mortgage plus interest.

“It’s probably the most-expensive foreclosure we’ve ever seen in luxury development. I don’t know of a foreclosure that’s larger than that,” Donna Olshan, president of high-end Manhattan brokerage Olshan Realty Inc., told newsmen.

Mr. Aluko is also avoiding Nigerian authorities who tried to freeze his asset in February as part of a money-laundering probe that also involves ex-Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, one of his ally.

It was alleged that Mr. Aluko, along with Jide Omokore, stole over $1.7 billion in oil assets from the federal government.

Watford have announced defender Craig Cathcart has signed a new four-year deal with the club.

The 28-year-old’s new contract keeps him at Vicarage Road through to June 2021.

Craig Cathcart has made 86 appearances for the club since joining permanently in 2014 and will hope to be a significant part of new Portuguese manager Marco Silva’s reign, despite struggling with injury last term, which restricted him to 17 appearances.

However, Cathcart will be excited that the club have shown faith in his abilities.

Chelsea have reportedly insisted on a buy-back clause in the deal that took Bertrand Traore to Lyon, while a similar agreement will be reached with Bournemouth for the sale of Nathan Ake.

The London club offloaded the promising Burkina Faso youngster for an initial fee of around £8.8m, rising to close to double that amount should he hit various performance-related targets.

According to the Daily Mail, a further clause in Traore’s contract will see Chelsea receive 15 per cent of any profit Lyon make should they sell him further down the line.

It is claimed that discussions are ongoing with Bournemouth over a similar clause for Ake, who is close to sealing a £20m switch to the South Coast after impressing on loan last term.

Report: Real Madrid Set To Sign Everton Transfer Target Sandro Ramirez

Featured Image

Reports in Spain claim Real Madrid have swooped in for Malaga forward and Everton transfer target Sandro Ramirez.

Everton were close to completing a deal for the Spain U21 international, according to various reports earlier this week.

But it seems like Real Madrid have entered the race at the last minute

The backdrop of the deal, from an Everton point of view, is that Sandro Ramirez. is being viewed as a replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who seems set to re-sign for Chelsea before the start of the new season.

The former Barcelona starlet scored 14 goals in La Liga and 16 in all competitions last season, while there have been plenty of rumours suggesting Everton have triggered the striker’s £5.2m release clause, while Sandro has also reportedly passed his medical too.

if Alvaro Morata joins Manchester United, Sandro could be the perfect man to replace Karim Benzema when needed.

Keep in mind that Real Madrid are also reportedly trying to sign Kylian Mbappe, who is also a striker

789 Prostitutes, Other Social Miscreants Sent Packing From Abuja

About 789 prostitutes and other social miscreants have been repatriated to their various states of origin within the last two years of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, an official said.

Prostitute Declared WANTED After Infecting 500 Men With HIV In Zamfara

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Muhammad Bello, who made this known while speaking to newsmen at a media parley, said that “789 beggars, mentally ill and other social miscreants have so far been evacuated from the streets of the FCT.”

He said, “Majority of these numbers were repatriated back to their respective neighbouring states after proper profiling and rehabilitation.”

He stated that government was determined to ensure that “women, youths, children and the vulnerable in FCT are adequately catered for.”

Daily Sun quoted the Acting secretary of the Social Development Secretariat (SDS), Mrs. Irene Adebola Elegbede, who spoke on behalf of the minister, as saying that it “is almost impossible to eradicate the world’s oldest profession from the FCT.”

She said: “You cannot eradicate the profession; you can only try to contain it. It is the oldest profession. We are trying to discourage commercial sex workers in FCT, but they are smarter than us, they work as cartels.

“When you dislodge or arrest them in a particular place, they migrate to another place. We arrested some in Apo, within the twinkle of an eye, able-bodied men were begging us to release them. We need to cooperate; if every man decides to be disciplined, we won’t see them.

“We should collaborate to reduce their numbers on our streets. If there is no demand, there won’t be supply. We even trained some of them in different vocations as a better alternative to prostitution and gave them start-off kits and start-up capital, but, surprisingly, after some months, we saw them on the streets again.”

Mrs. Elegbede further used the medium to urge members of the National Assembly to expedite action on a stiffer legal framework that would help in addressing the daunting challenge of beggars, miscreants and commercial sex workers.

Stoke City Rejects Burnley’s £3m Bid For Jonathan Walters

Featured Image

Burnley have had a £3m offer for forward Jonathan Walters rejected by Premier League rivals Stoke City, according to a report.

Burnley are looking to strengthen their squad as they prepare for a second-successive campaign of top-flight football, having avoided the drop with relative ease last term.

It is claimed by the Daily Mail that Walters has attracted the eye of Burnley boss Sean Dyche, but his initial bid fell short of the Potters’ valuation.

Jonathan Walters may be keen to force a move away, however, with the Republic of Ireland international being restricted to 13 top-flight starts last season under Mark Hughes.

Burnley, who finished four points below Stoke in 2016-17, already have a number of Irishmen in their ranks, including Jeff Hendrick, Robbie Brady, Kevin Long and Stephen Ward.

Lucas Lima Denies Barcelona Offer But Admits Crystal Palace Interest

Featured Image

Barcelona target Lucas Lima has denied receiving an offer from the Catalan giants but revealed he has been targeted by Crystal Palace.

The Brazil midfielder, 26, is out of contract at Santos at the end of the year and has been tipped to join Barcelona in January. However, Lima says Barca have not made an offer for him.

“I have not received any offer [from Barcelona],” he is quoted as saying in Marca.

Lima did, however, reveal that he has received offers from elsewhere.

“When I decide about my future, Santos will be the first to know it,” he added. “It’s my priority. I had offers from Crystal Palace, and a fortune from China, but they were not the teams I expected. I know that if I play well with Santos I will continue in the national team, I will be closer to the World Cup and that is very important for me.

At least 52 migrants, mostly from The Gambia, Nigeria, Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire, have died in Sahara Desert, even as the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said it had rescued no fewer than 600 people since April 2017 through a new search and rescue operation that targeted migrants stranded in the prominent Desert.

This disclosure was made by the UN migration agency in a statement issued on Tuesday.

“We are enhancing our capacity to assist vulnerable migrants stranded in Northern Agadez, towards the Niger-Libya border.

“Saving lives in the desert is becoming more urgent than ever.

“Since the beginning of the year we have been receiving frequent calls to rescue victims who embark on this route‎,” Giuseppe Loprete, Niger Chief of Mission for IOM, said.

According to him, a 22-year-old woman was the only female among the survivors of a rescue mission on May 28.

“She left Nigeria in early April hoping for a better future in Europe.

“There were 50 migrants on the pick-up truck when it left Agadez for Libya, but only six are still alive today,” Loprete said.

Narrating her ordeal, the Nigerian survivor said:

“We were in the desert for 10 days. After five days, the driver abandoned us.

“He left with all of our belongings, saying he was going to pick us up in a couple of hours, but he never did.”

During the next two days, 44 of the migrants died which persuaded the six left to start walking to look for help.

“We had to drink our own pee to survive,” she said.

On June 9, another 92 migrants were also rescued through an IOM search and rescue operation; among them were 30 women and children.

More recently, 24 migrants were taken to Seguedine, where one died on arrival.

“Among the 23 survivors are migrants from Gambia, Nigeria, Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire. It was not clear for how long they had been walking in the deserts of central Niger.

“They had been in a group of 75 migrants in three different cars, eventually abandoned by smugglers during the journey north,” Loprete said.

NAN quoted IOM as saying it had recorded 52 deaths since it launched a new project “Migrants Rescue and Assistance in Agadez Region” (MIRAA) in April.
