Guardiola: City Spending Cannot Be Sustained

Featured Image

Manchester City has spent £200 million so far in the window and Guardiola admits it is not sustainable.

Guardiola brought in players like Ederson, Bernardo Silva, Mendy, Walker and Danilo before the season kicks off.

City were linked with signing Mbappe, but it seems they have cooled their interest.

“I think it is unsustainable,” Guardiola said. “Sooner or later it’s going to finish.

“For example, hopefully next season I will be here and we are not going to spend how we spent this season. Six players were out of contract. In the last six or seven years Manchester City didn’t buy full backs. We didn’t have full-backs and you have to buy full-backs.

“We bought three and the market is so demanding for all the teams, not just Manchester City.

“It started with Real Madrid and Ronaldo going for £80 million and then Bale for £85 million and everything went more expensive. Now with Neymar.

“But it is going to finish, it is unsustainable. In the next three or four years Manchester City will buy one, two, maybe three players. But not what happened this summer.

“We needed to do that because it was one of the oldest teams in Europe, not just the Premier League, and we needed to change it. We were not able with those players to find a solution. But the solution is not changing players every season.”

Conte Sees Six-Team Title Chase

Featured Image

Antonio Conte says he expects the race for the premier league title this season to be split between six teams.

Conte won the title in his first season in charge at Chelsea and expects the other teams to bring their best against them.

Chelsea begin the campaign to defend their title on Saturday against Burnley and will be hoping to hold on to the trophy.

“I don’t know if this season could be more difficult than last season,” Conte told reporters on Friday. “I don’t know.

“We are champions. We have to face every game in the right way. The other teams will try to give 120 per cent against us. For this reason we have to pay great attention every game, to have the right approach, to have the right intensity. For this reason I’m telling you we’re working very hard to try to improve our team.

“When you start a new season it’s very important to think of ourselves, not to see the others. To assess the other teams is not important for us.

“You know very well that in England there are six top teams ready to fight for the title. This is normal in England. I think also in this season, this will happen.”

“I think Everton are a really good team, very good squad,” Conte added. “They have Koeman, he for me is a good coach, and a good club.

“For sure they are trying to take another step and to try to fight for the title, to try to fight for the Champions League.

“I like this. To have many teams ready to fight for the title increases the level of this league. The level now is already at the top. To improve this level is okay.”

Joe Allen Is Not For Sale, Says Stoke City Boss Mark Hughes

Featured Image

Stoke manager Mark Hughes has reiterated that Joe Allen is not for sale.

The Potters have turned down an inquiry from Swansea for the Wales midfielder and as far as Hughes is concerned that is the end of the matter.

“My understanding is there was a tentative inquiry and that was it,” said Hughes today. “We rebuffed that, didn’t give it any encouragement whatsoever and that’s where we are with that one, not for sale.”

The Potters have been linked to Manchester City and England midfielder Fabian Delph, but Hughes was adamant that these rumours have no bearing on Allen leaving Stoke.

“That doesn’t affect our position with Joe,” Hughes stressed.

“They made an inquiry. It wasn’t a bid or a request to buy him or anything like that. They just asked would we be willing to allow him to leave and we said no.

“I think we have to respect that they came and they did that – and because of the answer they got you’d like to think they will respect our position.”

AC Milan’s Lucas Biglia Out For One Month Due To Thigh Injury

Featured Image

AC Milan have lost their summer signing Lucas Biglia to injury for around a month.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who moved to San Siro from Lazio in July, has damaged a thigh muscle.

A statement published on Milan’s official website said the Argentinian would miss “approximately four weeks”, which definitely rules him out of the Serie A season-opener against Crotone on August 20.

“Lucas Biglia today underwent medical examinations, which confirmed an injury in the biceps femoris of his left thigh,” the statement said.

“His recovery time will be evaluated on how [the injury] develops, and it is estimated to be within four weeks.”

The 31-year-old joined from Lazio last month for a reported €17 million on a contract through 2020.

Biglia scored five goals with four assists in 34 appearances across all competitions last season.

Milan kick off their Serie A campaign away at Crotone on Aug. 20.

Arsenal Defender Gabriel Paulista A Transfer Target For Valencia

Featured Image

Valencia want Gabriel Paulista to replace Ezequiel Garay, who is off to Spartak Moscow, reports Superdeporte.

Inter’s Jeison Murillo had appeared to be top of manager Marcelino’s shortlist, but he prefers the Arsenal centre-back, who he previously coached at Villarreal.

Last summer’s signings of Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding pushed Gabriel down in the pecking order, while the return from injury of Per Mertesacker will also do him no favours this season.

Gabriel played for Villarreal before joining Arsenal in January 2015, and shone in his first spell in La Liga to earn him a £11.3million move to north London.

The South American has since gone on to make 64 appearances for the club, scoring one goal, and picking up two FA Cup winners’ medals in the process.

Pep Guardiola Looking To Add To His Manchester City Squad

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola is keen to make further additions to his Manchester City squad before the end of the transfer window.

Guardiola has spent more than £200m already this summer and smashed the world-record fee for a defender when he signed Kyle Walker from Tottenham in a £50m deal last month. But Guardiola’s summer spending is not complete, although he concedes Manchester City will not approach future transfer windows the same way.

“There is still 20 days left and there will be more transfers,” he told reporters ahead of City’s season-opener at Brighton on Saturday.

“Hopefully, next season I’ll be here, and now we’re not going to spend how we have spent this season I assure you that.

City were many bookmakers’ favourites for the title last season but finished 15 points behind champions Chelsea and Guardiola said he gives little attention to such labels and claimed he felt under no more pressure despite a trophyless debut campaign.

“Last season we were [favourites] too and we finished 15 points behind,” Guardiola said. “Last season in my first press conference we were the favourites so nothing has changed. I was confident last season, too.

“It’s the same pressure as I had last season. We are here to win the games and titles. I’m honest in my job. I will do my best like I did last season. If the club decides he is not able, we are going to take a solution.  I feel the same pressure as Barcelona when I arrived.

Antonio Conte Reveals Why Alvaro Morata Is Yet To Start For Chelsea

Featured Image

Antonio Conte has admitted new forward Alvaro Morata needs to be given time to adapt to his Chelsea team-mates and to English football.

Chelsea begin the defence of their Premier League title when Burnley visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday and new £70m signing Morata is set to make his top-flight debut for the Blues.

The 24-year-old club-record signing scored 20 goals for Real Madrid last term in all competitions, despite being used mainly as a substitute, and also won La Liga and the Champions League.

“He is starting to understand what I want from him during games,” Conte said.

“He needs time. The striker is an important role. This role is the most difficult to adapt to then the other roles.”

Conte also claimed he was “not looking for sympathy” over the size of his squad after leading the Blues from 10th the previous campaign to the Premier League trophy in May.

But with a return to the Champions League resulting in additional fixtures, the Blues’ squad size appears thin.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had an answer, pointing to Chelsea sending numerous players out on loan, but Conte insisted: “I’m not looking for sympathy of any coaches for this situation. This is my message.

“The situation is clear. If the club decide to send on loan players for their development it’s because these players are not ready to play for Chelsea.”

Charlie Boy’s Protest And The Hypocritical Puritans

Charlie Boy’s Protest And The Hypocritical Puritans, By Chidimma Egwuenu

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale is a highly respected member of the Puritan community. He is a beloved Reverend who many people of the town look to for comfort. This is why no one could ever suspect him of being the father of Pearl, Hester Prynne’s child. Throughout the novel, Dimmesdale seems to handle the fact that he is hiding the secret of being Pearl’s father extremely well until Chillingworth and his evil doings finally get to Dimmesdale. In one scene, Reverend Dimmesdale mounts the scaffold in the centre of town and screams out into the night in agony. He fears that he will be caught. However, the few townspeople who hear his cry simply mistake it for a witch’s cry. As well, Reverend Wilson walks near the scaffold and Dimmesdale fears that he will be discovered and questioned by the other Reverend. However, like the other townspeople, Reverend Wilson somehow seems not to notice Dimmesdale upon the scaffold.

This piece was written by Chidimma Egwuenu. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

This symbolises the blindness and hypocrisy of the Puritan society. The Puritans merely assume that the scream is from a witch and the other Reverend simply does not see Dimmesdale because they are all blind to the fact that someone in such a great position of power could commit a sin. Furthermore, they were quick to judge Hester, a woman of normal social class, when she committed her crime but refuse to see what is not right before their eyes when it involves a man in a position of power and respect, lending credence to their hypocrisy.

94 Days After! Is It True President Buhari Is Undergoing Chemotherapy? Charly Boy, #ResumeOrResign Protesters Ask

In study.com, it is elucidated that, “Hester Prynne is condemned to wear a scarlet letter ‘A’ on her chest as a punishment for the sin of adultery, but it seems that plenty of the other citizens of Salem are harboring similar sins without admitting them. They go on acting their part as pious”.

The above preamble which I culled from Hypocrisy of the Puritan Society sheds light on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and is a clear depiction of the life of a Puritan society in early America.

The Nigerian society can be likened to that Puritan society, where standards must be set by certain moral jingoists over every issue bordering on the society’s culture, economy, leadership and politics. From a judgmental standpoint, they find it inconvenient to separate their definition of morality from their prism of myopia, of complex social issues.

And they stretch it to a conclusion of what they think is right, irrespective of the opinion of others.

When they do not believe in your cause, they raise every argument to undermine it. This explains why I couldn’t help being stupefied as I just learnt from some quarters that you need to have a sparkling moral life in order to criticise or protest against the government of your country.

Proponents of this absurd school of thought are found everywhere on the cyber space vilifying celebrities like Charlie Boy and Jim Iyke for daring to go on the streets to call upon President Muhammadu Buhari to either resume or resign from his duty. This same very badmouthing was done to 2face earlier. They found convenience in lambasting 2face for daring to organise the later aborted protest simply because he has children by multiple women. Pathetic!

It is very remarkable to note that these puritans of questionable intents are among those who saw nothing wrong with a public officer like Senator Bukar Ibrahim having an extra-marital affair or our dishonourable representatives patronising brothels in every nook and cranny of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, with girls old enough to be their granddaughters. They tag it as part of a “private life” and question the audacity of anyone that tries to call them out; but right now, in a convenient plot twist, these righteous judges of character, after cynically and ‘meticulously’ appraising the ‘unsavory’ details of Charlie Boy’s lifestyle, found him totally unworthy of championing a crusade against His Holiness President Buhari II. Have I not said it that there is something hideous about a society like ours that has its values and priorities set in a reverse order?

How Police Brutalized Me During ‘Anti-Buhari’ Protest – Charly Boy

Now let me ask, does one need to have morals to criticise the government of his country? Does one need to be a saint to hold leaders accountable for the mandate given to them, more so, when one has never held a public office (such that one may then be categorised as part of the problem and tagged a hypocrite)? For those who anchored their criticism on their ‘disillusionment’ with celebrities and their lack of depth and knowledge in civil rights and political activism, I ask, is political activism elitist in nature? Does one need to be an Einstein to appreciate issues of bad governance or a Martin Luther King Jr. to stage a protest against the government of his country? Let me quickly remind us that Mohammed Bouazizi, the catalyst of the Arab Spring that ended the twenty-three year rule of President Ben Ali of Tunisia was a seller of Ugwu and Ewedu! He was no Gani Fawehinmi, Chima Ubani, Fela Kuti or a known activist; nay, he had no pedigree. Just like you and I, he was broken by the sufferings and anguish occasioned by bad leadership. He immolised himself in protest but you and I are so incurably docile and afraid to take to the streets. Another man was bold enough to do it and you dare sit in judgment over his lifestyle? If the substance of his protest is genuine why would you void it because of extraneous issues relating to his lifestyle? Did he hold himself out as a priest or an Alfaa contesting for a clergy position in a church or some Mosque?

This nation will only escape its impending doom when we all come down from our high-horses of judgment and view nation building as the collective task of all, irrespective of our social or religious leanings.

Chidimma Egwuenu, a legal practitioner writes from Lagos.

Abidal To Mbappe: Stay At Monaco

Featured Image

Former Barcelona defender, Eric Abidal has advised Kylian Mbappe not to be tempted by PSG and Madrid.

Mbappe has been linked with a €180 million transfer to PSG and Madrid are also interested in him.

The youngster scored 26 goals last season for Monaco and has been advised to stay at the club for first team football.

“It’s true that he made the last six months amazing with Monaco,” Abidal told the BBC.

“He reached quickly a high level, but football is complicated. You have to confirm next season his level, play a big competition like the World Cup with the national team, if you have an opportunity.

“After that he will be able to move in a big club like Real Madrid because everyone says he likes Real Madrid and Real Madrid is a good one for him.

“But you have to confirm [the ability] first.

“There is not too much pressure there from the fans, you have a good team and this guy is very quiet, only thinking of work, so for me it’s a good club

“At a big club it’s totally different, there is pressure every day, and even in one game if you don’t score, it is hard.”

Philippe Coutinho has handed in a transfer request at Liverpool to force a move to Barcelona.

The request was swiftly rejected by Liverpool, who released a statement insisting he is not for sale.

Liverpool have already rerejected two bids from Barcelona, the most recent of which was worth €100 million. However, Liverpool have stated repeatedly via Klopp that Coutinho is not for sale.

It was furthered with FSG’s definitive position that “no offers for Philippe will be considered and he will remain a member of Liverpool football club when the summer window closes”.

“If FSG is saying something like this, then that’s the statement,” Klopp noted in his pre-match media briefing.

Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings Likely To Be Fit For Champions League Match Against Hoffenheim

Featured Image

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he is keen to get Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge back on the pitch following his latest injury setback, while Danny Ings is also closing in on a return to fitness.

Sturridge was forced off against Bayern Munich in the Audi Cup at the start of the month with a minor complaint, keeping him out of his side’s final two pre-season friendlies.

Sturridge was quick to play down fears of a lengthy layoff, but he will sit out the season-opening clash against Watford on Saturday as Klopp wants him ready to take on Hoffenheim in Tuesday’sChampions League qualifier.

“I’m pretty sure Daniel will be okay for Tuesday,” Klopp told reporters, before being asked about the latest on Ings’s injury return.

“Danny needs games. He looks really good in the sessions we had when he could be part 100%,” he added. “There was no time for us to test him.

“Now he’s ready to go, as fit as he can be. He will play tonight with the Under-23s. He is not really an option [against Watford] because he had no pre-season games.”

Arsenal “Never Close” To Signing Riyad Mahrez- Arsene Wenger

Featured Image

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that he is a big fan of Riyad Mahrez, but he was “never close” to signing the winger from Leicester City.

Riyad Mahrez was heavily linked with the Gunners at the start of the transfer window after publicly announcing that he wants to leave the King Power Stadium.

Rumours of Mahrez joining Arsenal have gone quiet over the past month or so, with Roma now understood to be on the brink of signing him, and Wenger claims that he saw no real reason to make an offer.

‘We have not made a bid for him but personally I like the player,’ the Gunners manager said of the 2015/16 PFA Player of the Year.

‘Have we made a bid for him? No. Not yet. Not yet means it could happen, it could not happen.’

It would appear however that any potential move is off after Wenger explained he already had enough options similar to Mahrez.

‘We were never close [to a deal],’ Wenger is quoted by The Independent. ‘I rate him as a player but we have similar types with Alex Iwobi, Mesut Ozil and now Jack Wilshere back.

‘We have plenty of the same type of player.’

Southampton Still ‘Hopeful’ That Virgil Van Dijk Will Stay

Featured Image

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino says Virgil van Dijk’s transfer request has not changed anything and the club do not intend to sell.

“My reaction is the same that I said three weeks ago: we are expecting him [Virgil van Dijk] to come back, to train with us because we need the players, we need all of them,” Mauricio Pellegrino said.

“Hopefully he can change his point of view. Virgil is an important player and we need him focused on our club.”

Asked if Southampton can genuinely retain an unhappy player, Pellegrino said: “But the club was clear from the beginning with the player. We can’t control every single situation. We can decide our dynamic in this group and Virgil is part of our group; he has a contract.

“He has spoken with [executive director] Les Reed. We’ve spoken with the player but not too much, a couple of meetings.

“I was clear, the club was clear, he was clear on his position. But we have to keep going because I can’t control the thinking or the feeling of the player.”

When asked whether Virgil van Dijk  would be available for selection this weekend, Pellegrino added: “No, no. Because this week he was with some trouble with a virus and he couldn’t train the last two days.”

Pellegrino confirmed Southampton will continue to chase more new recruits during the transfer window.

94 Days After! Is It True President Buhari Is Undergoing Chemotherapy? Charly Boy, #ResumeOrResign Protesters Ask

94 Days After: Is It True President Buhari Is Undergoing Chemotherapy And That’s Why He Can’t Return Back To Nigeria?

ALSO READ: How Police Brutalized Me During ‘Anti-Buhari’ Protest – Charly Boy

  1. In the last 24 hours, reports have emanated from different sources that during the course of his 94-day medical sojourn in the United Kingdom, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) has received treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. These reports state that this treatment includes chemotherapy and go further to declare that President Buhari has become affected thereby to the point where he has severe difficulty communicating with the medical personnel treating him as well as close aides and family who are around him.

  2. These reports are difficult to confirm or refute because of the secrecy with which President Buhari’s aides have handled information related to his illness. The reports are deeply disturbing and are a source of grave concern. Even more disturbing is the fact that there are several conspiracy theories circulating as to the state of health the president and how the secrecy behind his ailment persists only to favor the cabals and influence peddlers playing chess with the lives of 200million Nigerians.

  3. It is in this light that we ask the Presidency to clear the air by providing full disclosure of the details of the illness which the President suffers from and the nature of treatment he is undergoing to combat such illness.

  4. Nigerians will recall that for a long time, false information has been peddled around parts of the country that President Buhari was poisoned. Therefore, It is imperative to point out that only full disclosure of the details of the President’s ill-health will put an end to reports of this nature and prevent the sort of social upheaval the lack of information may cause.

  5. Finally, we have read the statement made by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity, Alhaji Garba Shehu, to the effect that our demands for full disclosure and resignation upon confirmation of incapacitation are an attempt to distract the government from the fight against corruption.

It is shameful that this pedantic sort of reasoning is still being applied to critical issues at this point of our national history. At no point has any correlation been made between our demands on President Buhari’s health status and the fight against corruption.

Therefore, and for the avoidance of doubt, we urge the government to continue the fight against corruption by arresting, prosecuting and securing the conviction of any person or group of persons who are found guilty of looting the nation’s treasuries. At the same time, we urge the government to ensure it fully discloses the details of President Buhari’s illness.
